Liming potential and characteristics of biochar produced from woody and non-woody biomass at different pyrolysis temperatures

Large amount of wastes are burnt or left to decompose on site or at landfills where they cause air pollution and nutrient leaching to groundwater. Waste management strategies that return these food wastes to agricultural soils recover the carbon and nutrients that would otherwise have been lost, enrich soils and improve crop productivity. The incorporation of liming materials can neutralize the protons released, hence reducing soil acidity and its adverse impacts to the soil environment, food security, and human health. Biochar derived from organic residues is becoming a source of carbon input to soil and provides multifunctional values. Biochar can be alkaline in nature, with the level of alkalinity dependent upon the feedstock and processing conditions. This study conducted a characterization of biochar derived from the pyrolysis process of eggplant and Acacia nilotica bark at temperatures of 300 °C and 600 °C. An analysis was conducted on the biochar kinds to determine their pH, phosphorus (P), as well as other elemental composition. The proximate analysis was conducted by the ASTM standard 1762-84, while the surface morphological features were measured using a scanning electron microscope. The biochar derived from Acacia nilotica bark exhibited a greater yield and higher level of fixed carbon while possessing a lower content of ash and volatile components compared to biochar derived from eggplant. The eggplant biochar exhibits a higher liming ability at 600 °C compared to the acacia nilotica bark-derived biochar. The calcium carbonate equivalent, pH, potassium (K), and phosphorus (P) levels in eggplant biochars increased as the pyrolysis temperature increased. The results suggest that biochar derived from eggplant could be a beneficial resource for storing carbon in the soil, as well as for addressing soil acidity and enhancing nutrients availability, particularly potassium and phosphorus in acidic soils.

Enhanced optical and electrochemical properties of FeBTC MOF modified TiO2 photoanode for DSSCs application

In this work, iron based 1, 3, 5-tricarboxylic acid (FeBTC) was prepared via microwave-assisted method and incorporated into TiO2 via ultrasonic assisted method. The TiO2–FeBTC nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, FTIR, Raman, BET, FESEM, HRTEM, TGA, UV‒vis DRS and PL to understand their crystallographic, surface morphology, and optical characteristics. The Raman spectra showed a blue shift of Eg, A1g, and B1g peaks upon incorporation of FeBTC MOF onto TiO2. HRTEM and XRD analysis confirmed a mixture of TiO2 nanospheres and hexagonal FeBTC MOF morphologies with high crystallinity. The incorporation of FeBTC onto TiO2 improved the surface area as confirmed by BET results, which resulted in improved absorption in the visible region as a results of reduced bandgap energy from 3.2 to 2.84 eV. The PL results showed a reduced intensity for TiO2–FeBTC (6%) sample, indicating improved separation of electron hole pairs and reduced recombination rate. After fabrication of the TiO2–FeBTC MOF photoanode, the charge transfer kinetics were enhanced at TiO2–FeBTC MOF (6%) with Rp value of 966 Ω, as given by EIS studies. This led to high performance due to low charge resistance. Hence, high power conversion efficiency (PCE) value of 0.538% for TiO2–FeBTC (6%) was achieved, in comparison with other loadings. This was attributed to a relatively high surface area which allowed more charge shuttling and thus better electrical response. Conversely, upon increasing the FeBTC MOF loading to 8%, significant reduction in efficiency (0.478%) was obtained, which was attributed to sluggish charge transfer and fast electron–hole pair recombination rate. The TiO2–FeBTC (6%) may be a good candidate for use in DSSCs as a photoanode materials for improved efficiency.

Study on the Performance Evolution of Hydraulic Concrete under the Alternating Action of Freeze–Thaw and Abrasion

The hydraulic concrete in the alpine region is subjected to alternating actions of freeze–thaw (F) and abrasion (W) during operation, resulting in significant deterioration of concrete durability. In this paper, the water/binder ratio (W/B) was employed as the test variable, the working condition F group and W group were set as the control group, and the working condition F-W group was used as the test group. Fast-freezing and underwater methods are used for the alternating test. By measuring the mass loss, relative dynamic elastic modulus (RDEM), surface morphological characteristics, fractal dimension of concrete in each alternating cycle, and the evolution law of concrete performance under the alternating action of F and W was explored. The results show that compared with the control group, the alternating action will accelerate the mass loss of concrete, reduce the RDEM, and cause the deterioration of surface wear. The maximum increase in mass loss and RDEM of concrete is 1.92% and 20.11%, respectively. During this process, the fractal dimension of the concrete increases as the number of alternating cycles increases, but it still does not exceed the limit of 2.4. In addition, a relationship function between the fractal dimension and the mass loss rate, volume loss, was established. It was found that the experimental group had a good linear correlation, and the correlation was close to 95%, which was about 20% higher than that of the control group.

Exploring Zinc Vanadate/Cobalt Oxide (Zn3(VO4)2/CoO) Nano Hybrid Composites as Supercapacitors for Sustainable Energy Storage Applications

A hybrid nanocomposite of zinc vanadate/cobalt oxide (Zn3(VO4)2/CoO at ratios of 90/10, 80/20, 50/50, and 20/80) was obtained using a simple co-precipitation technique, then calcinated for 4 hrs at 400°C. The surface morphological, vibrational, and structural characteristics of the synthesized hybrid nanocomposites were examined. According to the structural study, orthorhombic Zn3(VO4)2 and cubic crystal systems of CoO with space groups Fm-3m were formed. The functional groups of Zinc Vanadate/Cobalt Oxide were examined using FTIR spectroscopy. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study reveals the nanosheets structures with the size of 200 nm. The chemical composition and formation of the Zn3(VO4)2/CoO composites were confirmed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical performance of the hybrid nanocomposites was assessed through CV, GCD and impedance analysis. Among the nanocomposites, Zn3(VO4)2/CoO 80/20 exhibited a high specific capacitance value of 564.36 Fg-1 and retaining 97% of their total capacitance even after 3000 cycles.

Surface morphology of API 5L X65 pipeline steel processed by ultrasonic impact peening: An integrated experimental and computational study

Ultrasonic impact peening (UIP) is a highly effective surface engineering technique to improve material durability through peening-induced surface plastic deformation. These improvements are determined by not only the generation of surface compressive residual stresses but also the alteration of surface morphological features. In literature, researchers have focused primarily on the average roughness (Sa) to understand the morphology changes induced by UIP. From the surface engineering perspective, in addition to Sa, other surface morphological characteristics play key roles in determining material durability, particularly surface skewness (Ssk) and surface kurtosis (Sku), which describe the asymmetrical distribution of surface profiles and the sharpness of peak features, respectively. In this study, surface morphological characteristics of API 5L X65 pipeline steel processed by UIP are investigated with a focus on the effects of processing parameters on Sa, Ssk, and Sku. The results indicate that the optimized UIP conditions lead to the preparation of surfaces with valley structures as the dominant feature accompanied by blunt peaks, resulting in the elimination of stress concentration sites towards enhanced material durability. In addition, surface hardness, residual stresses, and peening-induced deformation depth are measured. Furthermore, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the material response and the underlying mechanisms driving surface morphological alterations by UIP, a finite element method (FEM)-based model is developed. By investigating the effect of process parameters (peening amplitude, peening cycles, and pin size) on the surface deformation depth and stress/strain distribution, a correlation between these process variables with surface characteristics is established.

Optimization of Ion Beam-Assisted Deposition Process for Y<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> Film to Enhance Plasma Resistance

A ceramic-based plasma etcher window (Lid) requires robust resistance to plasma, especially when exposed to harsh fluorine-based plasma conditions. In this study, a Y<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> film was deposited using e-beam evaporation with ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD), and the physical properties of the IBAD-based Y<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> coating film were thoroughly examined to enhance the mechanical and chemical resistance of the ceramic part, including the Y<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> film, against etching plasma. The hardness and surface morphology of the IBADbased Y<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> could be precisely controlled by various deposition processing parameters, such as beam voltage, beam current, and Ar/O2 gas ratio. Following the IBAD deposition of the Y<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> film, a plasma etching process (Ar/CF<sub>4</sub> mixture gases with 150 W RF power for 60 minutes) was applied to evaluate the plasma resistance of the deposited Y<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> coating film. The surface morphology characteristics of the Y<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> films were compared using atomic force microscopy, and their grain size was studied through scanning electron microscopy image analysis. Furthermore, a nanoindenter was used to determine the hardness of the Y<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> film. These results suggest that optimizing the IBAD coating process requires an in-depth study that fully considers the correlation between deposition processing parameters and physical properties. This optimization can be instrumental for enhancing the durability of the ceramic part.

Perceptually Inspired C0-Continuity Haptic Shape Display with Trichamber Soft Actuators.

Shape display devices composed of actuation pixels enable dynamic rendering of surface morphological features, which have important roles in virtual reality and metaverse applications. The traditional pin-array solution produces sidestep-like structures between neighboring pins and normally relies on high-density pins to obtain curved surfaces. It remains a challenge to achieve continuous curved surfaces using a small number of actuated units. To address the challenge, we resort to the concept of surface continuity in computational geometry and develop a C0-continuity shape display device with trichamber fiber-reinforced soft actuators. Each trichamber unit produces three-dimensional (3D) deformation consisting of elongation, pitch, and yaw rotation, thus ensuring rendered surface continuity using low-resolution actuation units. Inspired by human tactile discrimination threshold on height and angle gradients between adjacent units, we proposed the mathematical criteria of C0-continuity shape display and compared the maximal number of distinguishable shapes using the proposed device in comparison with typical pin-array. We then established a shape control model considering the nonlinearity of soft materials to characterize and control the soft device to display C0-continuity shapes. Experimental results showed that the proposed device with nine trichamber units could render typical sets of distinguishable C0-continuity shape sequence changes. We envision that the concept of C0-continuity shape display with 3D deformation capability could improve the fidelity of the rendered shapes in many metaverse scenarios such as touching human organs in medical palpation simulations.

A novel intralamellar semi‐bioresorbable keratoprosthesis—Part A: Design conception, material perspective, and device manufacturing

AbstractCorneal diseases are a significant cause of visual impairment and blindness. The first‐line treatment for corneal opacity is penetrating keratoplasty (human donor cornea transplantation). At present, keratoprosthesis (KPro), an artificial cornea, is the last resort for correcting end‐stage corneal blindness and is usually supported by donor tissue. This article describes a new intralamellar tissue‐free KPro design concept and its preparation method. Wherein, an injection‐molding route is adopted to create a mechanically and structurally stable near‐KPro geometry using a photo‐polymerized poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) with 4% Bisphenol A dimethacrylate (BisMA) crosslinked (PC4) hydrogel composition. Prior to this, the physico‐mechanical properties of crosslinked hydrogels matching corneal tissue are identified, and the surface morphological characteristics of silk cocoon membranes are ascertained in choosing suitable KPro materials. Cytocompatibility tests on PC4 and silk‐incorporated PC4 hydrogels using rabbit corneal fibroblast cell‐line evidenced enhancement in cell growth on silk‐PC4 surfaces. Furthermore, near KPro geometry is surface‐profiled to create a one‐of‐a‐kind design with clear optics and a silk‐bioactivated composite‐based haptic‐flange hydrogel network containing site‐specific submillimeter‐scale perforations to improve tissue integration. Considering this unique KPro geometry, the optic‐haptic‐flange construct is a tissue‐free semi‐bioresorbable hydrogel device presumed to provide stability under the influence of intraocular pressure (IOP) and eyelid shear. Through this study, it is identified new KPro materials facilitate significant cytocompatibility while complimented with site‐specific novel design would offer tissue ingrowth with gradual resorption of silk, leaving behind a stable intralamellar tissue integrated with hydrogel when implanted in the corneal niche.

Therapeutic cargo-free Linalool-based nanoparticles attenuate inflammation by targeting NLRP3 Inflammasome

Linalool is a commonly used monoterpene obtained from the essential oils of plants that impart multiple pharmacological effects. However, because of poor aqueous solubility, therapeutic efficacy is low, therefore effective methods are desired for improving the efficacy of linalool. In this study, instead of encapsulating linalool, we directly amalgamated linalool with glyceryl monostearate (GMS) and formulate linalool-based nanoparticles (Lin-NPs) using the hot melt method. Subsequently, we characterized Lin-NPs for targeting and suppressing the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation in RAW264.7 cells. The hydrodynamic diameter of GMS-NPs was ~175nm but after amalgamating with linalool, the hydrodynamic diameter was found to be ~214nm. Furthermore, particle size and surface morphological characteristics were further confirmed with scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The formulation of Lin-NPs was also demonstrated with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These Lin-NPs were then assessed for their pharmacological efficacy in terms of their anti-inflammatory potential. These Lin-NPs effectively suppressed the ROS generation. Finally, investigated the effects of Lin-NPs on the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway as confirmed by the inhibition of NLRP-3, caspase-1 (inhibition of the inflammatory response initiator), and significant suppression of the other downstream biomarkers of the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway such as interleukin-1β and interleukin-18. In conclusion, amalgamation of linalool in GMS to develop Lin-NPs improved the efficacy of linalool, and plausible anti-inflammatory effects of Lin-NPs might be due to inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome pathway. Moreover, the GMS and linalool both are listed under the FDA-approved Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) material and therefore Lin-NPs could supplement as potential NPs to combat inflammation.

Photo-crosslinked chitosan-gelatin xerogel-like coating onto “cold” plasma functionalized poly(lactic acid) film as cell culture support

This paper reports on biofunctionalisation of a poly(lactic acid) (PLA) film by surface activation through cold plasma treatment followed by coating with a chitosan-gelatin xerogel. The UV cross-linking of the xerogel precursor was simultaneously performed with the fixation onto the PLA support. This has a strong effect on surface properties, in terms of wettability, surface free energy, morphology and micromechanical features. The hydrophilic – hydrophobic character of the surface, determined by contact angle measurements, was tuned along the process, passing from moderate hydrophobic PLA to enhanced hydrophilic plasma activated surface that favors coating adhesion then to moderate hydrophobic chitosan-gelatin coating. The coating has a Lewis amphoteric surface with a porous xerogel-like morphology as revealed by scanning electron microscopy images. By riboflavin mediated UV cross-linking the chitosan-gelatin coating becomes high adhesive and with a more pronounced plasticity, as shown by AFM force-distance spectroscopy. Thus prepared surface coated PLA supports were successfully tested for growth of dermal fibroblasts, which are known for their induction potential of chondrogenic cells, which is very important in cartilage tissue engineering.

Magnetic field-assisted electrodeposition of ZnCo2O4-rGo nanoelectrodes for enhanced supercapacitor performance

To investigate a convenient, rapid, and environmentally friendly method for the preparation of supercapacitor electrode materials to enhance supercapacitor performance, this study achieved the successful synthesis of ZnCo2O4-rGo (ZCG) nanomaterial electrodes on a nickel foam substrate. These electrodes were then assembled into supercapacitors using Magnetic field-assisted Electrodeposition (MFAED) technology. The surface morphology and structure characterization analysis revealed that the ZCG-4 material exhibited a mesoporous layered nanosheet structure. Moreover, they exhibited a significant specific active surface area of 155.7 m2/g and showed excellent adhesion to the nickel foam substrate. The electrochemical properties of the ZCG nanoelectrode material were studied in a 1 M KOH aqueous solution. The results revealed that the ZCG-4 nanoelectrode displayed low electrochemical impedance (Rs 0.23 Ω, Rct 1.36 Ω, and Zw 0.99 Ω) and a high specific capacitance of 2672 Fg−1. Furthermore, at a current density of 3 Ag−1, the electrode maintained good capacity retention (2672 Fg−1–2529 Fg−1, 94.6 %). Moreover, it retained a significantly high specific capacitance of 1339 Fg−1 even after 6000 cycles under a current density of 20 Ag−1. The supercapacitor assembled with ZCG-4 electrodes exhibits good electrochemical performance, possessing a high capacitance of 5.8F/cm2 at a current density of 1 mA/cm2. Moreover, the ZCG-4 supercapacitor demonstrates outstanding cyclic performance, maintaining 86 % capacity retention following 6000 charge–discharge cycles at a high current density of 30 mA/cm2. The mechanism of magnetic field electrodeposition for preparing ZCG has also been explained using magnetohydrodynamics theory. At a magnetic field strength of 6 T, the ion migration speed is 1.7 × 10−5 m/s, and the addition of the magnetic field effectively increases this speed. An effective magnetic field electrodeposition approach was thus proposed in this investigation to enable the synthesis of high-performance electrode materials and capacitors by combining metal oxide and rGo.

Effect of Voltage and Concentration of Polyetherimide on Surface Morphology and Corrosion Properties of AZ91D by Electro-Spin Coating

Magnesium alloys, particularly AZ91D, exhibit promising mechanical properties but are susceptible to corrosion, limiting their widespread industrial applications. This manuscript investigates the impact of voltage and concentration of Polyetherimide (PEI) on surface morphology and corrosion characteristics of AZ91D through electro-spin coating. PEI, known for its high strength and corrosion resistance, is applied using an eco-friendly electro-spin coating method. The study optimizes polymer concentration and applied voltage to enhance the anticorrosive properties of AZ91D. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveal the morphological alterations, while electrochemical corrosion tests provide insights into the corrosion resistance. The results show that a moderate PEI concentration (15%) at 14kV voltage exhibits the most favorable corrosion resistance, emphasizing the need to optimize both parameters for enhanced protection of AZ91D against corrosion. The results contribute to developing economical and effective corrosion protection techniques for magnesium alloys, mainly for automotive applications.

Effect of electrolytes on supercapacitive behavior of cubic shaped pristine cuprous oxide synthesized via sol-gel approach

The present study uses the sol-gel approach to employ cuprous oxide (Cu2O) as an electrode material for the electrochemical energy storage application. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examines the structural and surface morphological characteristics of the synthesized material, and pure phase development is verified by the X-ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns. The synthesized material has a high value of specific capacitance, notable porosity, and a well-defined cubic shape. In the three-electrode set-up, the electrochemical analysis uses different aqueous electrolytes, i.e., KOH and NaOH. The electrochemical outcomes indicate that the synthesized material has a maximum specific capacitance (Cs) of 362.77 Fg-1 with excellent stability (104 %) in 6 M NaOH than KOH electrolyte (225 Fg-1). EIS data for Cu2O-based electrodes have been modeled using various equivalent circuits. The ESR value of Cu2O in NaOH electrolyte is much smaller (0.503 Ω) than in KOH electrolyte, indicating the creation of more active sites and enhanced accessibility of ions. Capacitive and diffusion current contributions are shown by using the Trassati and Dunn techniques. Thus, all our findings suggest that sol-gel synthesized pristine cuprous oxide is a potential option for energy storage gadgets.

Investigations on the microbial activity and anti-corrosive efficiency of nickel oxide nanoparticles synthesised through green route

Abstract Researchers have shown considerable interest in the environmentally friendly synthesis of several nanoparticles particularly metal nano particles due to their multifaceted applications. The target of the current research includes the synthesis of nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO-NPs) through the green route using the bark extract from Acacia Nilotica, and analyzed their chemical and surface morphological features using XRD, SEM, EDX, IR, UV–vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy. In addition, the corrosion inhibition ability and antimicrobial activity of the extract were also studied. The XRD analysis indicated that the NiO exist in the form of nanoparticles. It showed the formation of pure cubic NiO-NP with a prominent peak at 43.28° reflected from the plane (200). The crystallite size was found to be 15.83 nm. The SEM micrographs revealed that NiO-NPs appeared to be a bulk cluster-like structure on their surface.The EDX analysis displayed the presence of Ni and oxygen atoms. The photoluminescence spectrum demonstrated that the green synthesized metal oxide nanoparticles have a modified emission band due to the presence of oxygen deficiencies and induced surface imperfections. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the association of peaks with the C–H and Ni–O bonds. The UV–vis study showed a maximum absorption at 264 nm. A study on the inhibition efficiency towards microbes confirmed that the prepared NiO-NPs have a good inhibition against selected microbes such as S. aureus, E. coli, Candida albicans, A. Niger. The mass loss system showed restraint 93.68 % effectiveness in the mild steel, and the electrochemical study supported the formation of a defensive protective layer on the cathodic locales of the carbon steel surface inhibiting corrosion.

Highly electroactive Co–ZnO/GO nanocomposite: Electrochemical sensing platform for oxytetracycline determination

Antimicrobial residues in animal-derived foods have become a major source of concern around the world. Oxytetracycline (OTC), one of these antibiotics that belongs to the tetracycline family should be detected in these matrices. Nanostructured metal oxides have attracted a lot of scientific attention due to their special characteristics that can be exploited for creating innovative nanodevices. Therefore, in the present study, we report the fabrication of cobalt-doped ZnO/GO nanocomposites for OTC sensors using a simple and environmentally friendly method that does not require toxic solvents. Contact angle measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV–Vis were used to confirm the successful fabrication of the Co–ZnO/GO nanocomposite and to determine the surface area, Structural, morphological features, chemical composition and purity of the nanocomposite. The electrochemical and electrocatalytic properties were recorded using cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Optimizing parameters such as scan rate, pH value, deposition time, and deposition potential, we achieve a wide linear concentration range from 10−12 M to 10−7 M, with an impressive detection limit of 1.6 10−13 M.Notably, our sensor exhibits remarkable selectivity, demonstrating its usefulness for the detection of oxytetracycline traces in real milk samples. These results emphasize the novelty and practical significance of our work and provide a promising avenue for the development of sensitive and selective electrochemical sensing platforms in various fields.

Prompted by surface-engineered honeycomb Turing nanostructures: Reflections on polyamide structure, growth and performance

The robust correlation between the performance of thin-film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis membranes and the polyamide (PA) active layer determines the necessity of precise design of the PA layer, and this regulation primarily involves the surface morphology and internal characteristics of the PA layer. In this study, we fabricated honeycomb Turing structure or nanovoid-rich TFC series membranes using polar/nonpolar organic phase additives. Characterization and simulation results confirmed that the enhancement of membrane performance relied more on the abundant nanovoids within the PA layer rather than the ordered honeycomb lattice surface. Notably, the TFC-nDCE membrane with multilayer nanovoids exhibited an approximately 89 % improvement in water permeability while maintaining satisfactory salt rejection (98.29 %). We emphasized the significant role of nanovoids in the diffusion process of amine monomers and investigated the potential relationship between nanovoids and the degree of surface cross-linking. Building upon this, a new insight into the formation of nanovoids induced by PA anisotropic growth was presented through a careful analysis of the amine monomer diffusion rate and the morphological evolution of nanovoids. The structure-property relationship between internal structures, surface morphologies, and performances was systematically and thoroughly investigated, pointing out the direction for the rational design of TFC membranes.

Characterization of road surface topography changes during polishing process with characteristic roughness parameter

In this paper, three-dimensional structure feature points of the asphalt mixture were obtained based on the industrial CT. The surface morphology of the asphalt mixture was then extracted through image morphology processing and evolutionary matching algorithms. A series of accelerated polishing tests were utilized to simulate the long-term polishing effect of the tire load on the asphalt pavement. Combining with digital image analysis, the full-life morphology evolution trend of the asphalt pavement was analyzed, and the full-life surface morphology datasets of the asphalt pavement were constructed. By comparing the power spectrum density of the asphalt pavement morphology at different wear stages, a segmented evaluation method based on the spectral fractal method was proposed. Combining the spectral fractal parameters and statistical geometric parameters, a multi-scale asphalt pavement surface morphology feature evaluation index was proposed. Effects of gamma-ray irradiation on material and electrical properties of AlN gate dielectric on 4H-SiC

This article investigates the radiation effects on as-deposited and annealed AlN films on 4H-SiC substrates under gamma-rays. The AlN films are prepared using plasma-enhanced-atomic-layer-deposition on an n-type 4H-SiC substrate. The AlN/4H-SiC MIS structure is subjected to gamma-ray irradiation with total doses of 0, 300, and 600 krad(Si). Physical, chemical, and electrical methods were employed to study the variations in surface morphology, charge transport, and interfacial trapping characteristics induced by irradiation. After 300 krad(Si) irradiation, the as-deposited and annealed samples exhibit their highest root mean square values of 0.917 nm and 1.190 nm, respectively, which is attributed to N vacancy defects induced by irradiation. Under irradiation, the flatband voltage (V fb) of the as-deposited sample shifts from 2.24 to 0.78 V, while the annealed sample shifts from 1.18 to 2.16 V. X-ray photoelectron spectrum analysis reveals the decomposition of O-related defects in the as-deposited AlN and the formation of Al(NO x ) y compounds in the annealed sample. Furthermore, the space-charge-limits-conduction (SCLC) in the as-deposited sample is enhanced after radiation, while the barrier height of the annealed sample decreases from 1.12 to 0.84 eV, accompanied by the occurrence of the SCLC. The physical mechanism of the degradation of electrical performance in irradiated devices is the introduction of defects like N vacancies and O-related defects like Al(NO x ) y . These findings provide valuable insights for SiC power devices in space applications.

The impact of urban rain on the changes of bare and artificially patinated bronze during 9-year exposure

Atmospheric pollutants in the air form acid rain which interacts with bronze surfaces exposed in urban outdoor environment. In this study, different types of patinas on bronze were investigated during and after 9 years of exposure to urban environment in moderately polluted continental city. Natural bronze patina and artificial brown sulphide, green chloride, and green–blue nitrate patinas were investigated. Visual assessment was carried out at defined periods. After 9 years of exposure, an electrochemical study was performed to investigate the electrochemical activity of the patinas in artificial urban rain. Additionally, the patinas were characterised using a variety of techniques, including metallographic examination, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray-photoelectron spectroscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry to analyse the surface morphology, chemical composition, and stratigraphic features of the patinas. Evolution of the patinas was shown to be a result of both, the composition of the acid rain and the hydrophobicity of the patinated surfaces.

Improving the fatigue property of diffusive film cooling holes in nickel-based single crystal superalloy via ultrashort pulse laser drilling coupled with abrasive flow machining

A novel hole-making technique, which combines ultrashort pulse (UP) laser drilling with abrasive flow machining (AFM), has been developed to enhance the surface quality and fatigue resistance of diffusive holes in nickel-based single crystal (NBSC) superalloys. This study conducted a comprehensive analysis of the surface morphology and metallurgical characteristics of the hole wall, evaluated by fatigue testing at elevated temperatures and fractography analysis. The findings demonstrate that AFM can effectively eliminate the solidified debris generated during UP laser drilling, significantly reducing surface roughness and inducing a rounded effect at the outlet acute zone of the diffusive hole. Such improvements have been shown to increase the fatigue life of the holes by up to 50.6 % compared to those without polish. Furthermore, the crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) was employed to investigate the localized stress concentration and the accumulation of plastic slip around the diffusive hole, elucidating the mechanisms behind fatigue failure in NBSC superalloys. The study also discusses the influence of the different hole-making technology on the fatigue properties of diffusive holes, integrating CPFEM results with analyses of surface quality and fatigue fractography. The study conducted in this study can provide valuable guidance for the fabrication of diffusive holes in turbine blades. Furthermore, it can also improve our understanding of the fatigue failure mechanism of diffusive holes in NBSC superalloy.
