Microstructure and Wear Resistance of In Situ Synthesized Ti(C, N) Ceramic-Reinforced Nickel-Based Coatings by Laser Cladding

In recent years, laser cladding technology has been widely used in surface modification of titanium alloys. To improve the wear resistance of titanium alloys, ceramic-reinforced nickel-based composite coatings were prepared on a TC4 alloy substrateusing coaxial powder feeding laser cladding technology. Ti (C, N) ceramic was synthesized in situ by laser cladding by adding different contents (10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%) of TiN, pure Ti powder, graphite, and In625 powder. Thisestudy showed that small TiN particles were decomposed and directly formed the Ti (C, N) phase, while large TiN particles were not completely decomposed. The in situ synthetic TiCxN1−x phase was formed around the large TiN particles. With the increase in the proportion of powder addition, the wear volume of the coating shows a decreasing trend, and the wear resistance of the surface coating is improving. The friction coefficient of the sample with 40% TiN, pure Ti powder, and graphite powder is 0.829 times that of the substrate. The wear volume is 0.145 times that of the substrate. The reason for this is that with the increase in TiN, Ti, and graphite in the powder, there are more ceramic phases in the cladding layer, and the hard phases such as TiC, Ti(C, N) and Ti2Ni play the role in the structure of the “backbone”, inhibit the damage caused by micro-cutting, and impede the movement of the tearing point of incision, so that the coating has a higher abrasion resistance.

Surface modification of biomedical titanium alloy for hard tissue repair and reconstruction

In biomedical applications, various materials are used, including metals and their alloys, polymers and ceramics. Among them, titanium (Ti) and titanium alloys are widely utilised in implant materials due to their excellent corrosion resistance and high mechanical strength. However, despite these advantages, titanium is biologically inert and does not integrate well with human cells. Therefore, surface modification of titanium implants plays a crucial role in determining the rate of osseointegration and the overall success of the implants. The primary objective of this review is to provide a detailed introduction to surface modification technologies for titanium alloy implants. The aim is to enhance the biological activity, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and antibacterial properties and reduce the release of ions from the implants. By modifying the surface of titanium implants, it is possible to create a more favourable environment for cell adhesion, proliferation and differentiation. Various techniques, such as physical methods (e.g. sandblasting, acid etching) and chemical methods (e.g. surface oxidation, plasma treatment) can be employed to modify the surface properties of titanium implants. These surface modification techniques can enhance the interaction between the implant and the surrounding biological environment, promoting osseointegration and improving the long-term stability of the implant. Additionally, surface modifications can help reduce the release of potentially harmful ions from the implant, minimise bacterial adhesion and improve the overall biocompatibility of the implant. In conclusion, surface modification of titanium alloy implants is a critical aspect of biomedical engineering. By improving the biocompatibility of titanium implants, these modifications contribute to the success and longevity of implants used in hard tissue repair and reconstruction.

Preparation, Characterization, and Bioactivities of Cobalt, Strontium and Fluorine Co-Doped Oxide Films on Titanium Surface for Clinical Application

Titanium and titanium alloys are receiving widespread attention due to their excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, corrosion resistances, and biocompatibilities. However, titanium metal itself is biologically inert in physiological environments, and after implantation, it is surrounded by a layer of encapsulating fibrous membrane, making it difficult to form solid bonds with the tissue. Plasma electrolytic oxidation is a new technology used to prepare bioactive porous ceramic membranes on the surfaces of titanium and titanium alloys. It has application prospects for biomimetic surface modifications of titanium alloys. In this study, a cobalt, strontium and fluorine codoped oxide film (TAM-CSF) was prepared on a titanium surface via plasma electrolytic oxidation. The surface characteristics of the film were evaluated with field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy spectrum analyses, atomic force microscopy, profilometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Additionally, the corrosion performance of the material was evaluated with an electrochemical workstation. The biocompatibility and bioactivity of the film were tested with in vitro cell experiments. The results showed that the TAM-CSF on the titanium surface had a porous morphology, and the CSF was uniformly doped on the film surface. TAM-CSF improved the surface roughness of the titanium. This film exhibited good biocompatibility and promoted the extension and proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells. It was possible to prepare TAM-CSF on titanium surfaces via plasma electrolytic oxidation. The film exhibited a good morphology and good biological activity and has clinical application prospects.

Powder-Mixed Micro-Electro-Discharge Machining-Induced Surface Modification of Titanium Alloy for Antibacterial Properties

The powder-mixed electro-discharge machining (PM-EDM) technique has shown its advantages in forming surfaces and depositing elements on the machined surface. Moreover, using hydroxyapatite (HA) powder in PM-EDM enhances the biocompatibility of the implant’s surfaces. Ti-6Al-4V alloy has tremendous advantages in biocompatibility over other metallic biomaterials in bone replacement surgeries. However, the increasing demand for orthopedical implants is leading to a more significant number of implant surgeries, increasing the number of patients with failed implants. A significant portion of implant failures are due to bacterial inflammation. Despite that, there is a lack of current research investigating the antibacterial properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloys. This paper focuses on studying the performance of HA PMEDM on Ti-6Al-4V alloy and its effects on antibacterial properties. By changing the capacitance (1 nF, 10 nF and 100 nF), gap voltage (90 V, 100 V and 110 V) and HA powder concentration (0 g/L, 5 g/L and 10 g/L), machining performance metrics such as material removal rate (MRR), overcut, crater size and hardness were examined through the HA PM micro-EDM (PM-μ-EDM) technique. Furthermore, the surface roughness, contact angle, and antibacterial properties of HA PM micro-wire EDM (PM-μ-WEDM)-treated surfaces were evaluated. The antibacterial tests were conducted for Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus subtilis bacteria. The key results showed a correlation between the discharge energy and powder concentration with the antibacterial properties of the modified surfaces. The modified surfaces exhibited reduced biofilm formation under low discharge energy and a 0 g/L powder concentration, resulting in a 0.273 μm roughness. This pattern persisted with high discharge energy and a 10 g/L powder concentration, where the roughness measured 1.832 μm. Therefore, it is possible to optimize the antibacterial properties of the surface through its roughness.

Research Progress of Surface Treatment Technologies on Titanium Alloys: A Mini Review

Titanium alloys are important strategic structural materials with broad application prospects in the industries of aerospace, space technology, automobiles, biomedicine, and more. Considering the different requirements for the diverse applications of titanium alloys, the modification of physicochemical properties, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility are required, including novel composite materials, novel design, novel manufacturing methods, etc. In this review, the surface treatment technologies utilized on titanium alloys are summarized and discussed. Regarding surface modification of titanium alloys, the methods of laser treatment, electron beam treatment, surface quenching, and plasma spraying are discussed, and in terms of the surface coatings on titanium alloys, thermal spraying, cold spraying, physical vapor deposition, and chemical vapor deposition are also summarized and analyzed in this work. After surface treatments, information on microstructures, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility of titanium alloys are collected in detail. Some important results are summarized according to the aforementioned analysis and discussion, which will provide new thinking for the application of titanium alloys in the future.

Research Progress in Electrospark Deposition Coatings on Titanium Alloy Surfaces: A Short Review

The development process of electrospark deposition (ESD) technology is reviewed, and the principles and differences of ESD technology are discussed in this review. Based on the research status regarding the ESD of titanium alloys, the promotion effect of ESD technology on wear resistance, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance at high temperatures, and the biocompatibility of titanium alloys was elaborated on. For example, with the use of ESD technology to prepare Ti–Al, TiN, Ni–Cr, and other hardening coatings with high hardness, the maximum hardness of the deposited layer is six times higher than that of the substrate material, which greatly reduces the loss of the material surface in the process of friction in service, and has a high wear–resistance effect. The preparation of a single–phase lamellar coating is more beneficial for improving the oxidation resistance of the substrate. Carbide and a nano–porous coating can effectively enhance the bone integration ability of implants and promote biocompatibility. The application of ESD technology in the surface modification of titanium alloys is reviewed in detail. Finally, the development direction of ESD technology for titanium alloys is proposed.

Intermetallic compound and martensitic transformation in Ag/Cu co-modified Ti6Al4V alloy

Titanium and its alloys are promising materials for engine production, special pump manufacturing, and bone implants. However, the abrasion resistance and fracture toughness of Ti alloys are insufficient to withstand extreme high loading conditions and harsh environments. Surface modification is an effective way to improve the performance of Ti alloys. In this study, Ag and Cu were added to Ti6Al4V alloy through friction stir processing to modify its surface. The different ratios of the Ag/Cu powder mixture were designed to optimize the surface modification of Ti6Al4V, and the relationship between intermetallic compounds and martensitic transformation was analyzed. The martensitic transformation was induced by AgCuTi phases. The submicron-size martensite was distributed outside the AgCuTi particle, while the nano-laminar martensitic band was generated inside the AgCuTi particle. Under the co-modification of Ti alloy using Ag and Cu, the surface of Ti6Al4V alloy exhibited higher hardness (4.3 GPa) values and lower modulus (100.6 GPa), which gave the credit to the formation of AgCuTi and martensitic transformation. The alloy specimen was subjected to short heat treatment at 600 °C for 30 min to further modify the gradient structure. After the short heat treatment of the Ag/Cu co-modified specimen, a lower modulus (88.8 GPa) and a high level of hardness (4.1 GPa) were achieved. In addition, superelastic strain recovery was also enhanced, showing the further induced martensitic transformation. This work provides new insight into the surface modification of titanium alloys using the FSP method to achieve the ideal hardness and elastic modulus balance.

Development of surface modified titanium alloy as a promising photocatalyst for textile waste water treatment

TiO2 photocatalyst properties can be enhanced by doping with metals and non-metallic elements or coupling with another semiconductor forming a heterostructure photocatalyst, etc. Doped TiO2 can also be achieved by surface modification of commercially available titanium alloys by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). Herein, Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo, Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al and Ti-6Al-4V are PEO treated, and the photocatalytic ability of the material was studied. Further, the effect of alpha and beta stabilisers on the polymorphs of TiO2 (anatase and rutile) is investigated. Surface morphology, wettability and optical properties are analysed to determine the material’s photocatalytic ability. All titanium alloys possess a typical PEO porous structure, favouring the adsorption of dyes from the textile wastewater. The EDS and XPS analysis found that the alloying elements such as Fe, V and Mo in the titanium have limited participation in the oxidation reaction. In contrast, Al, Zr, and Sn actively participated in the PEO reaction and doped into the TiO2 lattice. The bandgap of the oxide coatings on Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo, Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al and Ti-6Al-4 V alloys was found to be 2.92, 2.42 and 2.78 eV, respectively. The charge carrier’s recombination rate and separation efficiency of the PEO-treated Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al are better than the PEO-treated pure Ti and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo. The PEO-treated Ti-6Al-4V alloy showed the highest MB degradation of 98% under visible light irradiation. The article successfully demonstrated PEO surface-modified commercial titanium alloys as a promising new immobilised photocatalyst for efficient textile wastewater degradation under visible light.

Surface modification of cylindrical implants using electric discharge-assisted centreless turning

ABSTRACT Numerous techniques are used for the surface modification of titanium alloy. This research uses electric discharge-assisted centreless turning (EDCLT) to modify the titanium alloy surfaces used for dental implants. Experimentations were planned according to the L9 Taguchi orthogonal array design. Impulse current (IP), Pulse on time (Ton), and pulse off time (Toff) were selected as input variables, and surface roughness and hardness as output variables. The machined surface’s average surface roughness (Ra) was less than 1.90 µm. In contrast to unmachined surfaces, the machined surfaces had improved corrosion resistance and bioactivity. The average hardness of machining surfaces was found to be from 43.1 HRC to 52.8 HRC, while unmachined surfaces had an average hardness of 42.7 HRC. The machined piece with an average surface roughness (Ra) of 1.25 µm got the highest bone mineralization compared to other surface roughness.

Preparation of millimeter-scale hard layer on the surface of titanium alloy via self-propagating high temperature synthesis combined with hot pressing sintering process

A hard and thick surface strengthening layer with high interfacial bonding strength was innovatively prepared via self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) combined with hot pressing sintering (HPS) process. The thickness of the surface layer reached 1.1 mm, far exceeding the strengthening layer prepared by the traditional surface modification methods of titanium alloy. The raw materials of the hard layer were carefully designed by mixing powders of Ti, C, B and Ni, and the raw material of the matrix was Ti–6Al–4V powder. During the HPS process (1100 °C, 40 MPa), the Ti–Ni reaction released a large amount of heat, which promoted the Ti–C reaction and Ti–B reaction. The test results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) suggested that a high amount of Ti6C3.75 and TiB were finally generated in the hard layer, and the Vickers hardness value was as high as 1800 HV. Furthermore, the energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) test results indicated that most Ni atoms diffused to the Ti–6Al–4V side, and NiTi2 phase was mainly distributed at the interface. Obviously, metallurgical bonding was obtained, accounting for the high interfacial bonding strength of 162 MPa. The present work provided significant insights into the design of novel titanium alloy surface modification process.

Crystalline Zeolite Layers on the Surface of Titanium Alloys in Biomedical Applications: Current Knowledge and Possible Directions of Development

In this review, the main focus was on the use of zeolites as layers to modify the surface of titanium implants. The article discusses the basic methods for modifying the functional properties of zeolites (e.g., ion exchange) as well as biomedical applications of zeolites (e.g., drug delivery systems and biosensors). The article reviews the surface modifications of titanium alloys prepared so far with the use of various types of zeolites and selected examples are presented. This review shows the significant impact of titanium surface modification with zeolites, as well as their post-synthetic modification on implant properties, for instance, better biocompatibility, faster osseointegration, better cell adhesion, and corrosion resistance properties. The results of the research presented so far in this review show that the modification of titanium with zeolite layers is a very prospective subject, but underdeveloped, as evidenced by a small number of studies on this subject. We have shown that the prepared layers can be continuously improved and used, e.g., as local delivery systems for various active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). We hope that the prepared review will help research groups around the world in the preparation of implants modified with zeolites with even better properties and utility applications.

An efficient approach to endow TiNbTaZr implant with osteogenic differentiation and antibacterial activity in vitro

Osteogenic differentiation and antibacterial property are two-core requirements for bone implants, but typically they are not compatible. Zinc (Zn) as a common bioactive material is widely used in the medical field. A balance between antibacterial and osteogenic activity can be achieved at appropriate Zn concentration. In this study, the TNTZ/Zn micro/nano-composites were prepared by doping Zn nanoparticles onto Ti-35Nb-2Ta-3Zr (TNTZ) surface through the friction stir processing (FSP) technique. The results of material characterization revealed the homogeneous distribution of Zn, the presence of α″ martensite, and the increase in microhardness in the stir zone. Due to the solid metallurgical bonding between Zn NPs and substrate, Zn ions were released slowly and may be biologically responsive through body fluid corrosion. In terms of biological activity, the expression of adhesion-related protein vinculin and osteogenic differentiation genes were up-regulated by TNTZ/Zn, which improved the early adhesion and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow stromal stem cells. Besides, TNTZ/Zn presented excellent antibacterial properties, and direct contact with the fine grain surface containing Zn NPs may be the dominant mechanism. TNTZ/Zn micro/nano-composites have excellent mechanical properties, osteogenic differentiation and antibacterial properties, providing an efficient strategy for titanium alloy surface modification and showing tremendous potential in dental applications.

WC distribution, microstructure evolution mechanism and microhardness of a developed Ti-6Al-4 V/WC MMC coating fabricated by laser cladding

As an advanced repairing and strengthening technology, laser cladding technology has enormous potential in the surface modification of titanium alloys. This study applied laser cladding technology to synthesize WC/Ti-6Al-4 V metal matrix composite (MMC) coating on a Ti-6Al-4 V alloy substrate. The WC particles distribution, microstructure formation and evolution mechanism, microhardness of the MMC coating were investigated in detail. A prominent metallurgical bond was formed between the substrate and the MMC coating, and the uniform distribution of WC particles and reasonable transformation of microhardness from the substrate to the MMC coating were obtained. The phase composition of the MMC coating mainly contained TiC, Ti, WC, W2C, W, and the [W, Ti]C1-x solid solution and the WC particles were surrounded with a thickness of 3 um reaction layer. The results indicated that the higher heat input is beneficial to the uniform distribution of WC particles. Meanwhile, the microhardness of the MMC coating was enhanced by 73.5%, with the peak of 633.4 HV. Furthermore, the microhardness of the MMC coating decreases with the increase of heat input, which was related to the severe dissolution behavior of the WC.

Duplex Aging and Gas Nitriding Process as a Method of Surface Modification of Titanium Alloys for Aircraft Applications

This study discusses the effect of a duplex aging + nitriding process on the wear resistance of an aged double-phase titanium alloy, BT22. Nitriding was applied simultaneously with the heat treatment of the alloy, which is advantageous over the conventional heat and surface treatment methods applied to titanium alloys. According to the results, the thickness of the case depth of the nitrided samples was 40–50 μm. Moreover, nitrogen was uniformly dispersed in the substrate, which was indicated by the hardness tests. The average microhardness of the substrate material was 300 HV0.01, while the hardness of the top layer was 1190 HV0.01, which is an almost four-fold increase. The applied duplex treatment substantially affected the wear performance of the tested alloy. For the untreated alloy, the maximum coefficient of friction was 0.8, while in the surface-modified sample, the maximum fluctuations reached 0.6. The abrasive wear process was dominant in the nitrided samples, while delamination and adhesive wear were observed for the untreated specimens. The nitrided alloy exhibited double the wear resistance of the untreated samples. The proposed treatment does not require additional time or energy consumption, providing a substantial technological advantage over conventional methods. Though the alpha case reduces the mechanical performance of titanium, the nitriding of only the component sections intended to withstand friction will have a positive effect.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Laser Surface-Treated Ti13Nb13Zr Alloy with MWCNTs Coatings

Abstract Laser surface modification of titanium alloys is one of the main methods of improving the properties of titanium alloys used in implantology. This study investigates the microstructural morphology of a laser-modified surface layer on a Ti13Nb13Zr alloy with and without a carbon nanotube coating deposited by electrophoretic deposition. Laser modification was performed for samples with and without carbon nanotube coating for two different laser powers of 800 W and 900 W and for different scan rates: 3 mm/s or 6 mm/s at 25 Hz, and the pulse duration was 2.25 ms or 3.25 ms. A scanning electron microscope SEM was used to evaluate the surface structure of the modified samples. To observe the heat-affected zones of the individual samples, metallographic samples were taken and observed under an optical microscope. Surface wettability tests were performed using a goniometer. A surface roughness test using a profilograph and a nanoindentation test by NanoTest™ Vantage was also performed. Observations of the microstructure allowed to state that for higher laser powers the surfaces of the samples are more homogeneous without defects, while for lower laser powers the path of the laser beam is clearer and more regular. Examination of the microstructure of the cross-sections indicated that the samples on which the carbon nanotube coating was deposited are characterized by a wider heat affected zone, and for the samples modified at 800 W and a feed rate of 3 mm/s the widest heat affected zone is observed. The wettability tests revealed that all the samples exhibit hydrophilic surfaces and the samples with deposited carbon nanotube coating increase it further. Surface roughness testing showed a significant increase in Ra for the laser-modified samples, and the presence of carbon nanotubes further increased this value. Nanoindentation studies showed that the laser modification and the presence of carbon coating improved the mechanical properties of the samples due to their strength.

Interaction of Various Variants of the Nanostructured Surface of Titanium with MSCs Isolated from Adipose Tissue.

Titanium has been successfully used in dental implantology for a long time. Due to the osseointegration process, titanium implants are able to withstand the chewing load. This article is devoted to the study of surface treatment methods of titanium alloys and the study of their interaction with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The surface microrelief can influence MSC differentiation in different ways, which subsequently gives it osteogenic potential. The paper proposes modes of surface modification of titanium alloys on Grade 4 and Grade 1 by chemical and electrochemical (anodizing) etching. The possibility of modifying the surface of titanium alloys using the synthesis of graphene layers has been proposed in this paper for the first time. The osteogenic potential of a particular surface was assessed by the number of mesenchymal stem cells cultured on them under identical conditions.

Surface Modification of Titanium Alloy by Anodic Oxidation Method to Improve its Biocompatibility

Surface modification of titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) has been performed by anodic oxidation method within various concentration ranges of sulphuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ) electrolyte. It describes the oxidation kinetics of the anodizing process and critical analysis of process parameters like concentration of electrolyte, voltage, time and anodic current density, was performed to obtain homogenized nano-sized porous structure on the titanium substrate. XRD (X-ray diffraction technique) and FE-SEM (field emission scanning electron microscopy) were utilized for phase analysis as well as for morphological survey. XRD report revealed that porous structure appeared at 0.4 M concentration of the electrolyte and at anodic voltage of 20 V. Anatase to rutile phase transformation was observed at 0.5 M of H 2 SO 4 . Tribological test of anodized as well as nonanodized surface performed on pin-on-disc type tribometer suggested that anodized surface possessed high wear resisting strength compared to bare metal surface. The present study tries to enhance the biocompatible features especially bone cell attachment or cell proliferation of titanium alloy by improved surface characteristics.

Assessment of Titanate Nanolayers in Terms of Their Physicochemical and Biological Properties.

The surface modification of titanium substrates and its alloys in order to improve their osseointegration properties is one of widely studied issues related to the design and production of modern orthopedic and dental implants. In this paper, we discuss the results concerning Ti6Al4V substrate surface modification by (a) alkaline treatment with a 7 M NaOH solution, and (b) production of a porous coating (anodic oxidation with the use of potential U = 5 V) and then treating its surface in the abovementioned alkaline solution. We compared the apatite-forming ability of unmodified and surface-modified titanium alloy in simulated body fluid (SBF) for 1–4 weeks. Analysis of the X-ray diffraction patterns of synthesized coatings allowed their structure characterization before and after immersing in SBF. The obtained nanolayers were studied using Raman spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFT), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. Elemental analysis was carried out using X-ray energy dispersion spectroscopy (SEM EDX). Wettability and biointegration activity (on the basis of the degree of integration of MG-63 osteoblast-like cells, L929 fibroblasts, and adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells cultured in vitro on the sample surface) were also evaluated. The obtained results proved that the surfaces of Ti6Al4V and Ti6Al4V covered by TiO2 nanoporous coatings, which were modified by titanate layers, promote apatite formation in the environment of body fluids and possess optimal biointegration properties for fibroblasts and osteoblasts.

Research advance in surface modification of titanium alloys with chitosan

Titanium alloy has good biological properties and is commonly used in orthopedics, but its bone integrity and antibacterial properties are poor, so surface modification is needed to make up for its shortcomings. Chitosan has good biocompatibility and film forming ability, and can be used as a carrier to introduce the target drug to the surface of titanium alloy, which can effectively improve the biological properties of titanium alloy materials and increase its application range. In this paper, the related research of chitosan surface modified titanium alloy materials in recent years is summarized. The modification methods of chitosan coating, the improvement of osteogenesisand antibacterial properties of titanium alloy materials are discussed in order to provide guidance for the clinical application of coating modification of titanium alloy materials.

Selected Physicochemical Properties of Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) Coating on Ti-13Nb-13Zr Alloy Used for Blood Contacting Implants.

Despite high interest in the issues of hemocompatibility of titanium implants, particularly those made of the Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy, the applied methods of surface modification still do not always guarantee the physicochemical properties required for their safe operation. The factors that reduce the efficiency of the application of titanium alloys in the treatment of conditions of the cardiovascular system include blood coagulation and fibrous proliferation within the vessel’s internal walls. They result from their surfaces’ physicochemical properties not being fully adapted to the specifics of the circulatory system. Until now, the generation and development mechanics of these adverse processes are not fully known. Thus, the fundamental problem in this work is to determine the correlation between the physicochemical properties of the diamond like carbon (DLC) coating (shaped by the technological conditions of the process) applied onto the Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy designed for contact with blood and its hemocompatibility. In the paper, microscopic metallographic, surface roughness, wettability, free surface energy, hardness, coating adhesion to the substrate, impendence, and potentiodynamic studies in artificial plasma were carried out. The surface layer with the DLC coating ensures the required surface roughness and hydrophobic character and sufficient pitting corrosion resistance in artificial plasma. On the other hand, the proposed CrN interlayer results in better adhesion of the coating to the Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy. This type of coating is an alternative to the modification of titanium alloy surfaces using various elements to improve the blood environment’s hemocompatibility.
