Electromyographic analysis of selected shoulder muscles during shoulder rehabilitation exercises in patients after reversed shoulder arthroplasty

BackgroundReversed shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) aims to restore function in patients with rotator cuff failure and joint arthropathy. After surgery, patients are routinely referred to a rehabilitation specialist to regain range of motion, strength, and function. A key element in these programs is active exercises. The exercises are often selected based on assumed muscle activity, investigated by electromyography (EMG). In particular, in this patient population, activation of the deltoid and the scapular muscles is the focus of exercise therapy. Currently, most studies investigating muscle activity levels during exercises are performed on healthy individuals. To our knowledge, no study exists analyzing EMG activity during exercises in a population of shoulder arthroplasty patients. Therefore, the study aimed to analyze activity in the shoulder girdle muscles during 6 commonly used rehabilitation exercises 12 weeks after RSA surgery. MethodsForty-four patients (50 shoulders) participated in this cross-sectional study, 12 weeks postoperatively (mean 99.18±12.8 days), aged 68.9±7.75 years. Surface EMG activity was measured in 10 shoulder girdle muscles: the 3 trapezius parts, serratus anterior, the 3 deltoid parts, latissimus dorsi, and 2 pectoralis major parts during 6 exercises, 3 in a closed chain, and 3 open chain elevation exercises. ResultsGravity- minimized exercises (horizontal plane) show low activity for almost all muscles. Vertical closed kinetic chain exercises show an increased activity compared to horizontal plane exercises. Open kinetic chain exercises against gravity showed the greatest activity in Deltoid and Upper trapezius. For the other muscles no consistency in progression was found. ConclusionThis study offers a progression of exercises for patients after reversed shoulder arthroplasty based on increased muscle activity.

Electromyographic Evaluation of Masseter and Temporalis Muscle Activity in Distal Extension Edentulous Patients After Replacing with Implants—A Prospective Clinical Trial

Aim: To assess the changes in muscle activity after replacing the missing teeth or teeth with implants in distal extension edentulous patients and to evaluate the patient’s satisfaction levels. Materials and Methods: This was a single-group experimental study, based on convenience sampling with a sample size of 40 patients. Only unilateral mandibular distal extension edentulous sites were included and endo-osseous dental implants were placed in delayed protocol. Electrical activities of the masseter and temporalis muscles were recorded at rest and clench before, immediately, and one month after the cementation using electromyography. Patient satisfaction was analyzed through a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics an inferential statistics with repeated measures of ANOVA followed by the Bonferroni post hoc test were done to analyze the study data. P value < .05 would be considered statistically significant for all the analyses. Results: Right temporalis showed significantly higher surface electromyography (sEMG) activity at one-month post cementation than baseline at rest and clench. Similarly, the left temporalis has shown significant sEMG activity at one-month post cementation than baseline at clench. However, there was no statistical difference with the right and left masseter. The implant-supported prosthesis was well received by the majority of patients. Conclusion: Definitive improvement in the electrical activity of the temporalis before and after the replacement of prosthesis was noticed with positive patient satisfaction levels with implant-supported prosthesis.

Evaluation of cranio-cervical muscle activity in adolescents with different malocclusions: a pilot surface emg study

Aims: This study aimed to investigate potential differences in cranio-cervical muscular activation among adolescents with different types of malocclusion. Methods: This study involved thirty-two adolescents aged 10-15 years, categorized into three groups based on Angle. Angle Class I/control group (n=10), Angle Class II (n=12), and Angle Class III (n=10). Surface electromyography (EMG) was utilized to evaluate the activation levels of the Masseter, Temporalis Anterior, Cervical Erector Spinae, Sternocleidomastoid, and Upper Trapezius muscles. Measurements were obtained during mandibular rest, maximum clenching, and chewing tasks. Results: The surface EMG activity of the Upper Trapezius muscle exhibited significant elevation in participants with Class III malocclusions relative to the other groups (p<0.05). While cranio-cervical muscle activities tended to be higher in the groups of Angle Class II and Class III in comparison to the Angle Class I, these differences did not achieve statistical significance, with the exception of the Upper Trapezius muscle (p>0.05). Conclusion: These findings indicate a link between malocclusion types and modified muscle activation patterns in the cranio-cervical region, specifically involving the Upper Trapezius muscle. Insights into cranio-cervical muscle activity can enhance the comprehensive evaluation of malocclusion effects and provide valuable guidance for orthodontic and rehabilitation interventions.

The effect of craniocervical flexors endurance training on suprahyoid muscle activation in healthy adults: A randomised controlled trial.

Cervical posture affects swallowing function through contractile and non-contractile structures. Craniocervical flexor endurance training (CCFET), which focuses on the activation of deep cervical muscles, is used to ensure cervical posture stability. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of CCFET on the suprahyoid muscles (SH), which play an important role in swallowing function. Eighty healthy individuals (52 female and 28 male, mean age 21.77 ± 1.81 years) were recruited and randomly assigned to groups that underwent either deep cervical flexor (DCF) training with a pressure biofeedback unit (CCFET group, n = 41) or no intervention (control group, n = 39). The intervention was applied for 4 weeks (five sessions per week). Static endurance and activation of DCF muscles (Craniocervical Flexion Test, CCFT), tragus-wall distance (TWD) for forward head posture and surface electromyographic (sEMG) activation of suprahyoid muscles were evaluated. The endurance and activation of the DCF muscles were significantly increased in the CCFET group (p = <.001). In the CCFET group, TWD significantly lower than the control group (p = <.001) Peak SH amplitude and mean SH amplitude were lower in the CCFET group compared to the control group (p = .013, p = .003). The study shows that 4 weeks of CCFET reduced SH muscle activation, allowing the same work to be done with fewer motor units. CCFET can be included in rehabilitation programs as an additional method that has an effect on the muscles involved in swallowing by providing cervical motor control.

Scapular Motor Control and Upper Limb Movement Quality in Subjects with and without Chronic Shoulder Pain: A Cross-Sectional Study

Despite the existence of several studies about the scapula’s position and motion, in shoulder pain conditions, there are still conflicting findings regarding scapular adaptations and reduced research about the scapula’s role during functional tasks. The present study aimed to compare scapular-related kinematic and electromyographic outcomes during different shoulder movements (with and without load) and the drinking task, between symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects. Forty subjects (divided into two groups) participated in this cross-sectional observational study. Scapulothoracic motion, scapulohumeral rhythm, and movement quality (considering trunk compensation, time-to-peak acceleration, and smoothness), as well as the relative surface electromyographic activity and muscle ratio considering the trapezius, serratus anterior, and levator scapulae (LS), were assessed. The symptomatic group presented the following: (1) changes in scapular upward rotation (p = 0.008) and winging (p = 0.026 and p = 0.005) during backward transport and drink phases; (2) increased muscle activity level of the middle trapezius (MT) in all tasks (p &lt; 0.0001 to p = 0.039), of LS during shoulder elevation with load (p = 0.007), and of LS and LT during most of the drinking task phases (p = 0.007 to p = 0.043 and p &lt; 0.0001 to p = 0.014, respectively); (3) a decreased serratus anterior lower portion activity level (SAlow) during shoulder lowering with load (p = 0.030) and drink phase (p = 0.047); and (4) an increased muscular ratio between scapular abductors/adductors (p = 0.005 to p = 0.036) and elevators/depressors (p = 0.008 to p = 0.028). Compared to asymptomatic subjects, subjects with chronic shoulder pain presented scapular upward rotation and winging adaptations; increased activity levels of MT, LT, and LS; decreased activity levels of SAlow; and increased scapular muscle ratios.

Efficacy of Elastodontic Devices in Temporomandibular Disorder Reduction Assessed by Computer Aid Evaluation

Background: The main objective of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy of two different devices, the Eptamed elastodontic device and a common bite sold in pharmacies, by assessing a computer aid evaluation of patients’ surface electromyography (sEMG) and kinesiography activity of four pairs of masticatory and postural muscles (anterior temporalis, digastricus, masseters and sternocleidomastoids muscles) before and after 6 months of treatment. Materials and Methods: Twelve adult patients with temporomandibular disorders and in need of orthodontic treatment were enrolled in the study and divided into cases and controls. Cases underwent orthodontic treatment with the Eptamed elastodontic device, while controls were treated with a bite sold in pharmacies. Both groups underwent electromyographic and kinesiographic examinations before and after 6 months from the start of treatment. Results: The Eptamed device was found to guarantee an improvement in the electrical activity of the muscles examined. The subjects in the control group, on the other hand, had a general worsening of electrical activity after wearing a splint purchased in a pharmacy. As for the kinesiographic examination, there was no significant improvement in both groups. Conclusions: the use of the Eptamed device in subjects with TMD ensured a greater relaxation of the chewing muscles than a standard bite, effectively reducing the risk of worsening the symptomatology of temporomandibular disorders.

Attentional focus differentially modulates the corticospinal and intracortical excitability during dynamic and static exercise.

Although attentional focus affects motor performance, whether corticospinal excitability and intracortical modulations differ between focus strategies depending on the exercise patterns remains unclear. In the present study, using single- and paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation and peripheral nerve stimulation, we demonstrated changes in the cortical and spinal excitability under external focus (EF) and internal focus (IF) conditions with dynamic or static exercise. Participants performed the ramp-and-hold contraction task of right index finger abduction against an object (sponge or wood) with both exercises. They were asked to concentrate on the pressure on the sponge/wood induced by finger abduction under the EF condition, and on the index finger itself under the IF condition. Motor-evoked potential (MEP) and F-wave in the premotor, phasic, or tonic phase, and short- and long-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI and LICI, respectively), and intracortical facilitation (ICF) in the premotor phase were examined by recording surface electromyographic activity in the right first dorsal interosseous muscle. Increments in the MEP amplitude were larger under the EF condition than under the IF condition in the dynamic, but not static, exercise. The F-wave, SICI, and LICI did not differ between focus conditions in both exercises. In the dynamic exercise, interestingly, ICF was greater under the EF condition than under the IF condition and positively correlated with the MEP amplitude. These results indicate that corticospinal excitability and intracortical modulations to attentional focus differ depending on exercise patterns, suggesting that attentional focus differentially affects the central nervous system responsible for diverse motor behaviors.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We investigated attentional focus-dependent corticospinal and intracortical modulations in dynamic or static exercise. The corticospinal excitability was modulated differentially depending on the focus of attention during dynamic, but not static exercise. Although the reduction of intracortical GABAergic inhibition was comparable between focus conditions in both exercises, intracortical facilitation was smaller when focusing on the internal environments in the dynamic exercise, resulting in lower activation of the corticospinal tract.

Effect of hypoxic sprint interval exercise and normoxic recovery on performance and acute physiological responses

AbstractHypoxic exercise, which can induce arterial and tissue deoxygenation, promotes physiological adaptations. However, reduced oxygen availability can lower the absolute training intensity (i.e., mechanical stress). Adding normoxic recovery to sprint interval exercise (SIE) is one potential approach to strike a balance between providing a hypoxic stimulus and maintaining the absolute training intensity. However, the effects of adding normoxic recovery to SIE on performance and physiological responses are uncertain. We tested the hypothesis that hypoxic SIE with normoxic recovery enhances arterial deoxygenation and muscle deoxygenation levels without impeding performance compared to an entirely normoxic condition. On separate days, seven male sprinters performed 4 × 30‐s ‘all‐out’ cycle sprints with 4.5‐min recovery with hypoxic exposure (FiO2: 12.7%O2) applied continuously (hypoxia, HYP), intermittently during sprint periods only (intermittent, INT), or not at all (normoxia, NOR). Power output, oxygen saturation, muscle oxygenation, surface electromyography (EMG) activity, heart rate, blood lactate concentration, and ratings of perceived exertion were measured. The total work significantly decreased in HYP than NOR (p &lt; 0.05) and INT (p &lt; 0.01). The aTrterial oxygen saturation was lower during HYP than NOR (∼86% vs. ∼97%; p &lt; 0.001), while lower values were also obtained for INT than NOR during sprint periods (∼85% vs. ∼97%; p &lt; 0.001) but not during recovery periods (∼96% vs. ∼97%). The heart rate differed (p &lt; 0.05) between conditions (NOR: ∼164 bpm; INT: ∼160 bpm; HYP: ∼156 bpm). No other variables demonstrated significant differences between conditions. Adding hypoxia during exercise while recovering in normoxia did not compromise exercise capacity during SIE, despite inducing larger arterial deoxygenation levels compared to normoxia.

Graded onset of parasternal intercostal inspiratory activity detected with surface electromyography in healthy young females and males.

Intramuscular recordings of single motor unit activity from parasternal intercostal muscles show a rostrocaudal gradient in timing and amplitude of inspiratory activity. This study determined the feasibility of surface electromyographic activity (EMG) to measure graded parasternal intercostal activity in young females and males during quiet breathing and breathing with inspiratory resistive loads. Surface EMGs were recorded from the 1st-to-5th parasternal intercostal muscles during 10 min of breathing. EMGs were processed to remove 50 Hz and electrocardiogram artifacts and integrated. Amplitude and onset time of inspiratory activity were measured from waveform averages triggered at the onset of inspiratory flow. Onset times were measured independently by two assessors, blinded to interspace and EMG scale, with excellent agreement (ICC3,k = 0.86). The onset of inspiratory activity in the 1st-to-3rd interspaces was at or within ∼400 ms of the start of inspiratory airflow, but activity in the caudal (4th and 5th) spaces was delayed by up to ∼1,000 ms (P < 0.001). There was no main effect of sex on onset time (P = 0.07), but an interaction with interspace (P < 0.001) revealed that inspiratory activity in the caudal interspaces was delayed by 15% of inspiratory time in female participants compared with 30% of inspiratory time in male participants. Inspiratory loads did not affect EMG onset time (P = 0.31). Thus, surface EMG is feasible to assess the onset time of inspiratory activity as a marker of inspiratory neural drive and pattern of activation across spaces, in both females and males.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We demonstrated that surface EMG is a valid method to measure graded inspiratory EMG in the parasternal intercostal muscles in healthy young male and female participants during quiet breathing and loaded breathing. Across the 1st-to-5th interspaces, there was more homogenous activation in women and more graded activity in men across parasternal intercostal muscles during breathing. By recording surface EMG from both male and female participants, we have revealed sex differences in inspiratory activity across intercostal muscles.

Predicting Dysphonia by Measuring Surface Electromyographic Activity of the Supralaryngeal Muscles.

This study set out to investigate whether individuals with dysphonia, as determined by either self-assessment or clinician-based auditory-perceptual judgment, exhibited differences in perilaryngeal muscle activities using surface electromyography (sEMG) during various phonatory tasks. Additionally, the study aimed to assess the effectiveness of sEMG in identifying dysphonic cases. A total of 77 adults (44 women, 33 men, Mage = 30.4 years) participated in this study, with dysphonic cases identified separately using either a 10-item Voice Handicap Index (VHI-10) or clinician-based auditory-perceptual voice quality (APVQ) evaluation. sEMG activities were measured from the areas of suprahyoid and sternocleidomastoid muscles during prolonged vowel /i/ phonations at different pitch and loudness levels. Normalized root-mean-square value against the maximal voluntary contraction (RMS %MVC) of the sEMG signals was obtained for each phonation and compared between subject groups and across phonatory tasks. Additionally, binary logistic regression analysis was performed to determine how the sEMG measures could predict the VHI-10-based or APVQ-based dysphonic cases. Participants who scored above the criteria on either the VHI-10 (n = 29) or APVQ judgment (n = 17) exhibited significantly higher RMS %MVC in the right suprahyoid muscles compared to the corresponding control groups. Although the RMS %MVC value from the right suprahyoid muscles alone was not a significant predictor of self-evaluated dysphonic cases, a combination of the RMS %MVC values from both the right and left suprahyoid muscles significantly predicted APVQ-based dysphonic cases with a 69.66% fair level. This study found that individuals with dysphonia, as determined by either self-assessment or APVQ judgment, displayed more imbalanced suprahyoid muscle activities in voice production compared to nondysphonic groups. The combination of the sEMG measures from both left and right suprahyoid muscles showed potential as a predictor of dysphonia with a fair level of confidence. https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.25112804.

Comparative Electromyographic Study of Scapular Stabilizing Muscles During Five Main Rehabilitation Exercises.

The aim of the study is to compare the surface electromyographic amplitude, activation ratio, and onset latency of the main scapular stabilizing muscles between five typical rehabilitative exercises. Twenty-seven healthy participants performed five scapular exercises (wall slide, wall push-up plus, prone horizontal abduction with external rotation, external rotation in side lying, and low row) while simultaneously recording surface electromyographic of serratus anterior, middle trapezius, lower trapezius, and upper trapezius. Surface electromyographic amplitudes, onset latencies, and activation ratios were calculated. Prone horizontal abduction with external rotation showed an excellent upper trapezius/middle trapezius (0.43) and upper trapezius/lower trapezius (0.30) muscle balance with high (>50% maximum voluntary isometric contraction) middle trapezius and lower trapezius amplitudes, a low (<20% maximum voluntary isometric contraction) upper trapezius amplitude, and an early activation of the scapular stabilizing muscles (-474.7 to 89.9 ms) relative to upper trapezius. External rotation in side lying showed excellent upper trapezius/serratus anterior (0.26), upper trapezius/middle trapezius (0.32), and upper trapezius/lower trapezius (0.21) activation ratios and, along with low row and wall slide, showed early activation of the scapular stabilizing muscles (-378.1 to -26.6 ms). Prone horizontal abduction with external rotation presented optimal scapular neuromuscular control. Although external rotation in side lying, low row, and wall slide did not meet all the criteria associated with optimal scapular neuromuscular control, these exercises could be used in early stages of shoulder rehabilitation because they favor early activation of the scapular stabilizing muscles.

The efficacy of different torque profiles for weight compensation of the hand.

Orthotic wrist supports will be beneficial for people with muscular weakness to keep their hand in a neutral rest position and prevent potential wrist contractures. Compensating the weight of the hands is complex since the level of support depends on both wrist and forearm orientations. To explore simplified approaches, two different weight compensation strategies (constant and linear) were compared to the theoretical ideal sinusoidal profile and no compensation in eight healthy subjects using a mechanical wrist support system. All three compensation strategies showed a significant reduction of 47-53% surface electromyography activity in the anti-gravity m. extensor carpi radialis. However, for the higher palmar flexion region, a significant increase of 44-61% in the m. flexor carpi radialis was found for all compensation strategies. No significant differences were observed between the various compensation strategies. Two conclusions can be drawn: (1) a simplified torque profile (e.g., constant or linear) for weight compensation can be considered as equally effective as the theoretically ideal sinusoidal profile and (2) even the theoretically ideal profile provides no perfect support as other factors than weight, such as passive joint impedance, most likely influence the required compensation torque for the wrist joint.

User Training With Error Augmentation for sEMG-Based Gesture Classification.

We designed and tested a system for real-time control of a user interface by extracting surface electromyographic (sEMG) activity from eight electrodes in a wristband configuration. sEMG data were streamed into a machine-learning algorithm that classified hand gestures in real-time. After an initial model calibration, participants were presented with one of three types of feedback during a human-learning stage: veridical feedback, in which predicted probabilities from the gesture classification algorithm were displayed without alteration; modified feedback, in which we applied a hidden augmentation of error to these probabilities; and no feedback. User performance was then evaluated in a series of minigames, in which subjects were required to use eight gestures to manipulate their game avatar to complete a task. Experimental results indicated that relative to the baseline, the modified feedback condition led to significantly improved accuracy. Class separation also improved, though this trend was not significant. These findings suggest that real-time feedback in a gamified user interface with manipulation of feedback may enable intuitive, rapid, and accurate task acquisition for sEMG-based gesture recognition applications.

EFFECTIVENESS OF POSTERIOR PELVIC TILT EXERCISE ON STABLE AND UNSTABLE SURFACE IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC LOW BACK PAIN

Purpose: The objective of this study was to assess and evaluate the efficacy of posterior pelvic tilt exercises on pain reduction, functional disability, muscle strength, and lumbopelvic angle in patients with Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP). These exercises were conducted on stable and unstable surfaces. Methods: This was a single-blinded randomized two-group pre-test and post-test experimental study. Men and women with CLBP, with an age between 18 and 50 years, were divided into two groups at random. Group A performed the exercises on a stable surface, and Group B performed the exercises on an unstable surface. The Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) for functional disability, Flexi Ruler for measuring lumbar lordosis angle, and Surface Electromyography (SEMG) for Transverse Abdominis (TA) and Rectus Abdominis (RA) muscles were used for pre- and post-treatment analysis. Results: Significant improvements in SEMG activity of TA and RA muscles were observed in both intervention groups following conventional exercises (p &lt; 0.05). However, the unstable surface group had a higher increase in SEMG amplitude during Maximal Voluntary Isometric Contraction (MVIC) and the percentage of MVIC for the TA muscles. Conclusion: Posterior pelvic tilt exercises performed on stable and unstable surfaces effectively reduced pain, decreased the angle of lumbar lordosis, improved functional disability, and enhanced activity and strength of the pelvic muscles in patients with CLBP.

Few sex-specific effects of fatigue on muscle synergies in a repetitive pointing task

Previous studies have identified some sex differences in how individual muscles change their activation during repetitive multi-joint arm motion-induced fatigue. However, little is known about how indicators of multi-muscle coordination change with fatigue in males and females. Fifty-six (29 females) asymptomatic young adults performed a repetitive, forward-backward pointing task until scoring 8/10 on a Borg CR10 scale while surface electromyographic activity of upper trapezius, anterior deltoid, biceps brachii, and triceps brachii was recorded. Activation coefficient, synergy structure, and relative weight of each muscle within synergies were calculated using the non-negative matrix factorization method. Two muscle synergies were extracted from the fatiguing task. The synergy structures were mostly preserved after fatigue, while the activation coefficients were altered. A significant Sex × Fatigue interaction effect showed more use of the anterior deltoid in males especially before fatigue in synergy 1 during shoulder stabilization (p = 0.04). As for synergy 2, it was characterized by variations in the relative weight of biceps, which was higher by 16 % in females compared to males (p = 0.04), and increased with fatigue (p = 0.03) during the elbow flexion acceleration phase and the deceleration phase of the backward pointing movement. Findings suggest that both sexes adapted to fatigue similarly, using fixed synergy structures, with alterations in synergy activation patterns and relative weights of individual muscles. Results support previous findings of an important role for the biceps and anterior deltoid in explaining sex differences in patterns of repetitive motion-induced upper limb fatigue.

Balance strategies for recovery from perturbed overground walking

Bipedal locomotion is naturally unstable and requires active control. Walking is believed to be primarily stabilized through the selection of foot placements; however, other strategies are available, including regulation of ankle inversion/eversion, ankle push-off, and angular momentum through trunk postural adjustments. The roles of these strategies in maintaining overall stability are often masked by the dominant foot placement strategy. The objectives of this study were to describe how the four strategies are used to respond to medial or lateral ground perturbations during overground walking in healthy individuals and determine reliance on each strategy. Fifteen healthy adults walked with and without perturbations applied to the right foot at heel strike while body kinematics and surface electromyographic activity were measured. Medial perturbations resulted in decreased step width on the first step after the perturbation, increased ankle inversion, increased ankle push-off, and rightward trunk sway. Lateral perturbations resulted in increased step width, decreased ankle inversion, no change in ankle push-off, and leftward trunk sway. EMG activity was consistent with the observed strategies (e.g. increased peroneus longus EMG activity during ankle eversion) with the exception of increased bilateral erector spinae activity for all perturbations. Foot placement was the dominant strategy in response to perturbations, with other strategies showing reduced, yet significant, roles. This work demonstrates that multiple strategies are recruited to improve the balance response in addition to foot placement alone. These results can serve as a reference for future studies of populations with impaired balance to identify potential deficits in strategy selection.

Effects of auriculotherapy on muscle fatigue: A randomized crossover trial

ObjectiveThis study aimed investigate the effect of auriculotherapy on exercise-induced muscle fatigue, isometric torque production, and surface electromyographic activity (EMG). MethodsDesign: Randomized Crossover Trial. The sample consisted of 18 males’ volunteers who exercised at least twice a week. The sample was randomly assigned to two groupsPlacebo Group (n = 9) and Treated Group (n = 9), and after seven days, the groups were crossed. The data analysis included 18 participants in each group. Main outcome measureThe muscle fatigue index, force production rate, and EMG of the quadriceps were used for evaluation. The evaluation moments included baseline pre-fatigue, baseline post-fatigue, 48 h post-intervention pre-fatigue, and 48 h post-intervention post-fatigue. Mixed two-way test ANOVA was used to compare times and groups. ResultsThe fatigue index for peak torque and work showed no significant effect on time, groups, or interaction (p > 0.05). However, for isometric torque, force production rate, and EMG median frequency and average, the results indicate a positive change in values over time (p < 0.05) (with little practical relevance), with no differences observed between the groups or interaction (p > 0.05). ConclusionsIn conclusion, auriculotherapy had no effect on exercise-induced muscle fatigue, isometric torque production, and surface electromyographic activity.

Benefits of Training the Iron Cross With Herdos Devices and External Load Added to Body Weight for Young Nonachiever Gymnasts.

To verify whether training the iron cross (IC) with assistive devices (herdos; HIC) and added external load (LHIC) to equate the moments of force developed on the rings could be considered an intermediate step between the nonoverloaded herdos situation (HIC) and the IC performed on the rings. Relative levels of surface electromyography (sEMG) activity were normalized with respect to a standing IC before comparing gymnasts who can perform the IC on the rings (achievers) and gymnast who cannot (nonachievers) in the 2 herdos conditions (HIC and LHIC). Seven muscles were chosen for sEMG analysis, namely, pectoralis major (PM), latissimus dorsi, teres major, lower trapezius, serratus anterior, biceps brachii (BB), and triceps brachii. Additionally, 3 indices were calculated to measure levels of coactivation: Elbowidx, Scapulaidx, and Shoulderidx. The bigger magnitude of differences in sEMG activity among situations was found for the PM and BB (F ≥ 30.7; P < .001). When comparing the global and the PM, teres major, BB, and triceps brachii activity across groups, nonachievers activated their musculature to a greater extent than the achievers independently of the herdos situation (P ≤ .046). Achievers' Elbowidx was the only index that was significantly higher (P ≤ .005) in the IC in comparison to LHIC and HIC. sEMG activity of PM and BB was particularly sensitive between situations, independently of the level of achievement. We recommend training the IC by adding external load in the herdos situation to increase muscle activity to levels closer to the rings situation but avoiding the potential factor of injuries.

Hamstring-to-quadriceps activation ratio during lower-limb strengthening exercises

ABSTRACT Multiple exercises included in strength training involve greater activation of the quadriceps compared to hamstring muscles, which may lead to knee joint imbalances. The aim of this study was to examine the ratio of surface electromyography (sEMG) activity hamstring and quadriceps muscle groups (hamstring-to-quadriceps activation ratio; H:Q EMG), as well as lateral to medial hamstring activation ratio (LH:MH) in parallel squat, Romanian deadlift, hip thrust, lying leg curl and seated knee extension. The H:Q EMG was greater during lying leg curl compared to other exercises during both the concentric and eccentric phase, however the Romanian deadlift and hip thrust also resulted in relatively high H:Q EMG. Pairwise comparisons revealed that LH:MH was greater in the parallel squat compared to the Romanian deadlift and hip thrust in the concentric phase, and compared to the Romanian deadlift and hip thrust during the eccentric phase. Our data suggests that the lying leg curl promotes the greatest hamstring activation and H:Q EMG, amongst the exercises investigated, while also providing relatively homogenous LH:MH. The lying leg curl should be considered as a primary exercise in rehabilitation and training programmes, aiming to proportionally activate LH:MH and increase H:Q EMG, which may improve knee muscle balance.
