Short-Term and Long-Term Stability of Medial Olivocochlear Reflex in Adults with Typical Hearing.

This study aimed to assess the stability of Medial Olivocochlear Reflex (MOCR) function in typical hearing adults with the use of Contralateral Suppression (CS) of Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAEs). This study included fifty-three (90ears) participants between the ages of 18-30. Participants were divided into 3 groups (Group A-daily stability, Group B-short-term stability, and Group C- long-term stability). For each group, 4 measurements (30 × 4 = 120sessions) were taken. Group A measurements were taken daily, Group B measurements were taken weekly and Group C measurements were taken monthly. DPOAEs and Contralateral Suppression of DPOAEs were measured for each group. Analyses indicated that Medial Olivocochlear Reflex (MOCR) measured through contralateral suppression of DPOAE was unstable. This result indicates a DPOAE-based measure of the MOCR was not repeated across time. A great deal has been learned using CS of DPOAEs to study medial efferent activation, but several unresolved methodological issues that could impact the data to produce poor stability across time. Those methodological issues need to be explored and researched in the future.

The Spectral Extent of Phasic Suppression of Loudness and Distortion-Product Otoacoustic Emissions by Infrasound and Low-Frequency Tones

We investigated the effect of a biasing tone close to 5, 15, or 30 Hz on the response to higher-frequency probe tones, behaviorally, and by measuring distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). The amplitude of the biasing tone was adjusted for criterion suppression of cubic DPOAE elicited by probe tones presented between 0.7 and 8 kHz, or criterion loudness suppression of a train of tone-pip probes in the range 0.125–8 kHz. For DPOAEs, the biasing-tone level for criterion suppression increased with probe-tone frequency by 8–9 dB/octave, consistent with an apex-to-base gradient of biasing-tone-induced basilar membrane displacement, as we verified by computational simulation. In contrast, the biasing-tone level for criterion loudness suppression increased with probe frequency by only 1–3 dB/octave, reminiscent of previously published data on low-side suppression of auditory nerve responses to characteristic frequency tones. These slopes were independent of biasing-tone frequency, but the biasing-tone sensation level required for criterion suppression was ~ 10 dB lower for the two infrasound biasing tones than for the 30-Hz biasing tone. On average, biasing-tone sensation levels as low as 5 dB were sufficient to modulate the perception of higher frequency sounds. Our results are relevant for recent debates on perceptual effects of environmental noise with very low-frequency content and might offer insight into the mechanism underlying low-side suppression.

Characterizing the Access of Cholinergic Antagonists to Efferent Synapses in the Inner Ear

Stimulation of cholinergic efferent neurons innervating the inner ear has profound, well-characterized effects on vestibular and auditory physiology, after activating distinct ACh receptors (AChRs) on afferents and hair cells in peripheral endorgans. Efferent-mediated fast and slow excitation of vestibular afferents are mediated by α4β2*-containing nicotinic AChRs (nAChRs) and muscarinic AChRs (mAChRs), respectively. On the auditory side, efferent-mediated suppression of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) is mediated by α9α10nAChRs. Previous characterization of these synaptic mechanisms utilized cholinergic drugs, that when systemically administered, also reach the CNS, which may limit their utility in probing efferent function without also considering central effects. Use of peripherally-acting cholinergic drugs with local application strategies may be useful, but this approach has remained relatively unexplored. Using multiple administration routes, we performed a combination of vestibular afferent and DPOAE recordings during efferent stimulation in mouse and turtle to determine whether charged mAChR or α9α10nAChR antagonists, with little CNS entry, can still engage efferent synaptic targets in the inner ear. The charged mAChR antagonists glycopyrrolate and methscopolamine blocked efferent-mediated slow excitation of mouse vestibular afferents following intraperitoneal, middle ear, or direct perilymphatic administration. Both mAChR antagonists were effective when delivered to the middle ear, contralateral to the side of afferent recordings, suggesting they gain vascular access after first entering the perilymphatic compartment. In contrast, charged α9α10nAChR antagonists blocked efferent-mediated suppression of DPOAEs only upon direct perilymphatic application, but failed to reach efferent synapses when systemically administered. These data show that efferent mechanisms are viable targets for further characterizing drug access in the inner ear.

Reliability of Contralateral Suppression in Evoked Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions.

Introduction Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) and their suppression may be considered useful in monitoring cochlear function and the efferent auditory pathway inhibitory effect. Nonetheless, the establishment of reliable parameters of response variations is of great importance. Objectives To verify the replicability of test and retest in the research of the inhibitory effect of the efferent pathway using contralateral suppressing stimulus during DPOAE recording for clinical applicability. Methods Cross-sectional study with 48 volunteers, aged 18 to 30 years, with normal audiometric thresholds. The procedures included were audiometric and immittance measures to overrule any conductive or sensorineural conditions and DPOAE recordings without and with contralateral suppression with a 60 dBHL white noise. Distortion product otoacoustic emissions amplitudes were analyzed and compared in both conditions with Wilcoxon test, and the Spearman correlation test was used to assess test-retest reliability. Results The comparative analysis showed differences between amplitudes in test and retest conditions only in 1,500 Hz for DPOAE measures with all other tested frequencies showing no differences, and no difference was observed in all recorded frequencies in the test and retest comparison for DPOAE suppression. The degree of correlation between test and retest of DPOAE amplitude was good at 6,000 Hz and strong (r > 0.880) at the other frequencies. For DPOAE with suppression, all frequencies presented strong correlation between test and retest: 1,500 Hz (r = 0.880), 2,000 Hz (r = 0.882), 3,000 Hz (r = 0.940), and 6,000 Hz (r = 0.957). Conclusions The study found good replicability in contralateral suppression of DPOAE with potential clinical applicability, and we recommend conducting the test from 2000Hz to higher frequencies for more reliable results.

Correlation and Reliability of Behavioral and Otoacoustic-Emission Estimates of Contralateral Medial Olivocochlear Reflex Strength in Humans.

The roles of the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) in human hearing have been widely investigated but remain controversial. We reason that this may be because the effects of MOCR activation on cochlear mechanical responses can be assessed only indirectly in healthy humans, and the different methods used to assess those effects possibly yield different and/or unreliable estimates. One aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between three methods often employed to assess the strength of MOCR activation by contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS). We measured tone detection thresholds (N = 28), click-evoked otoacoustic emission (CEOAE) input/output (I/O) curves (N = 18), and distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) I/O curves (N = 18) for various test frequencies in the presence and the absence of CAS (broadband noise of 60 dB SPL). As expected, CAS worsened tone detection thresholds, suppressed CEOAEs and DPOAEs, and horizontally shifted CEOAE and DPOAE I/O curves to higher levels. However, the CAS effect on tone detection thresholds was not correlated with the horizontal shift of CEOAE or DPOAE I/O curves, and the CAS-induced CEOAE suppression was not correlated with DPOAE suppression. Only the horizontal shifts of CEOAE and DPOAE I/O functions were correlated with each other at 1.5, 2, and 3 kHz. A second aim was to investigate which of the methods is more reliable. The test–retest variability of the CAS effect was high overall but smallest for tone detection thresholds and CEOAEs, suggesting that their use should be prioritized over the use of DPOAEs. Many factors not related with the MOCR, including the limited parametric space studied, the low resolution of the I/O curves, and the reduced numbers of observations due to data exclusion likely contributed to the weak correlations and the large test–retest variability noted. These findings can help us understand the inconsistencies among past studies and improve our understanding of the functional significance of the MOCR.

Evaluation of Efferent Auditory System and Hearing Quality in Parkinson's Disease: Is the Difficulty in Speech Understanding in Complex Listening Conditions Related to Neural Degeneration or Aging?

Purpose The effects of neurological diseases on the auditory system have been a notable issue for investigators because the auditory pathway is closely associated with neural systems. The purposes of this study are to evaluate the efferent auditory system function and hearing quality in Parkinson's disease (PD) and to compare the findings with age-matched individuals without PD to present a perspective on aging. Method The study included 35 individuals with PD (mean age of 48.50 ± 8.00 years) and 35 normal-hearing peers (mean age of 49 ± 10 years). The following tests were administered for all participants: the first section of the Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing Scale; pure-tone audiometry, speech audiometry, tympanometry, and acoustic reflexes; and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) and contralateral suppression of DPOAEs. SPSS Version 25 was used for statistical analyses, and values of p < .05 were considered statistically significant. Results There were no statistically significant differences in the pure-tone audiometry thresholds and DPOAE responses between the individuals with PD and their normal-hearing peers (p = .732). However, statistically significant differences were found between the groups in suppression levels of DPOAEs and hearing quality (p < .05). In addition, a statistically significant and positive correlation was found between the amount of suppression at some frequencies and the Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing Scale scores. Conclusions This study indicates that medial olivocochlear efferent system function and the hearing quality of individuals with PD were affected adversely due to the results of PD pathophysiology on the hearing system. For optimal intervention and follow-up, tasks related to hearing quality in daily life can also be added to therapies for PD.

Auditory fatigue among call center operators with headset

BackgroundTo assess whether call center operators are subject to or suffer from any auditory fatigue when compared to normal subjects. A prospective case-control study where twenty-eight call center operators (10 females and 18 males) with an age range from 25 to 46 years and twenty controls (12 females and 8 males) with an age range from 23 to 44 years were included. All call center operators use a headset for up to 8 h daily for a minimum of two consecutive years. Audiological assessments were done to all participants that included pure tone audiometry (PTA), speech audiometry, tympanometry, and acoustic reflexes. Moreover, transient-evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) absolute threshold and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) signal to noise thresholds as well as contralateral suppression of TEOAEs and DPOAEs were recorded for both groups.ResultsThere was no significant variation in auditory performances detected with either PTA or OAE (TEOAEs and DPOAEs) test. Besides, there was no statistically significant difference in OAEs (TEOAEs and DPOAEs) with contralateral suppression for both the call center operators and control groups. However, call center operators expressed a feeling of tiredness.ConclusionsThere was no detectable central or peripheral auditory fatigue experienced by the call center operators when using headsets. However, their sensation of auditory fatigue could be due to cognitive fatigue rather than noise-induced fatigue.

Comparison of distortion-product otoacoustic emission and stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emission two-tone suppression in humans

Distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) and stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emission (SFOAE) are two types of acoustic signals emitted by the inner ear in response to tonal stimuli. The levels of both emission types may be reduced by the inclusion of additional (suppressor) tones with the stimulus. Comparison of two-tone suppression properties across emission type addresses a clinically relevant question of whether these two types of emission provide similar information about cochlear status. The purpose of this study was to compare DPOAE suppression to SFOAE suppression from the same ear in a group of participants with normal hearing. Probe frequency was approximately 1000 Hz, and the suppressor frequency varied from -1.5 to 0.5 octaves relative to the probe frequency. DPOAE and SFOAE suppression were compared in terms of (1) suppression growth rate (SGR), (2) superimposed suppression tuning curves (STCs), and (3) STC-derived metrics, such as high-frequency slope, cochlear amplifier gain, and QERB (ERB, equivalent rectangular bandwidth). Below the probe frequency, the SGR was slightly greater than one for SFOAEs and slightly less than two for DPOAEs. There were no differences in STC metrics across emission types. These observations may provide useful constraints on physiology-based models of otoacoustic emission suppression.

Age-related changes of otoacoustic emission

The aim of the study was to assess age-related changes of the transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) as well as to evaluate age-related changes of DPOAE suppression in adult subjects with normal hearing and presbycusis. Only women participated in the study: 26 young women with normal hearing (20-31 years old) were included into the first group; the second group consisted of 28 elderly (60-74 years old) with normal hearing; the third group included 28 elderly women with presbycusis (mild-to-moderate hearing loss). Age-related decrease of prevalence and amplitude of OAEs was proved to be significant; no significant differences of these data for left and right ears were revealed. Contralateral suppression of DPOAE was noted more often and was the greatest in young listeners and was presented in all frequency range, meanwhile the suppression was minimal and rarely noted in patients with presbycusis. The DPOAE amplitude enhancement in the contralateral noise condition was recorded in all groups of listeners, more often in aged patients both with normal hearing and hearing loss. These results may indicate age-related changes of medial olivocochlear complex, which take place not only in patients with hearing loss but in normal hearing subjects as well.. The findings were confirmed by the results of acoustic reflex measurements obtained in this study.

Influence of smoking on contralateral suppression of distortion product otoacoustic emissions

The present study attempted to determine the influence of smoking on contralateral suppression of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE). It was attempted to determine the differences in the amount of contralateral suppression of DPOAE between smokers and non-smokers. In addition, correlation was also determined among duration of smoking, frequency of smoking and number of cigarettes per day on contralateral suppression of DPOAE. The study was carried out on 25 smokers and non-smokers. The results of the study showed that the amount of suppression was reduced in smokers at all the frequencies suggesting an efferent auditory system dysfunction. The increase in the duration of smoking, the frequency of smoking and the number of cigarattes smoked correlated negatively with the amount of suppression. This shows that chronic smoking habits increases the risk of efferent auditory damage. Thus, the present study highlights the ill-effects of smoking on efferent auditory system.

Differences in the suppression of distortion product otoacoustic emissions by contralateral white noise between patients with acute or chronic tinnitus

Objective: The mechanisms underlying the shift from acute tinnitus to chronic remain obscure. An association between tinnitus and medial olivocochlear bundle (MOCB) reflex dysfunction has been hypothesised by several studies. The differences between participants with acute and chronic tinnitus have not yet been investigated. Design: Participants were examined with distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) suppression elicited by contralateral white noise. They were compared in terms of frequency regions with non-recordable DPOAEs, suppression amplitudes and the presence of DPOAE enhancement. Study sample: Eighteen participants with acute tinnitus, 40 age-matched adults with chronic tinnitus and 17 controls were included. All participants (aged 34.7 ± 9.6years; mean ± Standard deviation) had normal hearing. Tinnitus was bilateral in 22 participants and unilateral in 36. Results: Ears with chronic tinnitus presented significantly lower DPOAE suppression amplitudes than ears with acute tinnitus (p < 0.0001). Both acute and chronic tinnitus ears present a high prevalence of enhancement, significantly different from controls (p < 0.0001, p = 0.0002, respectively). Non-recordable DPOAEs were significantly more frequent in the chronic than in the acute tinnitus and control groups (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: The differences between study groups indicate that when tinnitus becomes chronic, DPOAEs suppression presents changes that might reveal corresponding steps in tinnitus pathophysiology. Treatment implications are discussed.

Effect of practicing yoga on functioning of efferent auditory system

Introduction: The present study attempted to determine the effect of practicing Yoga on the functioning of the efferent auditory system using contralateral suppression of otoacoustic emissions (OAE). Method: The efferent suppression of transient evoked OAE (TEOAE), and distortion product OAE (DPOAE) was recorded from 40 participants (20 who practice Yoga regularly and 20 who do not practice yoga regularly). Results: The results of this study showed that there was an increase in the amount of suppression of both TEOAE and DPOAE in individuals who practice Yoga. The result suggests that Yoga enhances the sensory perception and improves auditory attention. The constant practice of Yoga could have led to the plasticity of the efferent auditory system. Conclusions: Thus, the practice of Yoga may be used to strengthen the efferent auditory system. However, further studies on a larger group of the population are essential for better clinical applicability of the results.

Multi-tone suppression of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions in humans.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the combined effect of multiple suppressors. Distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) measurements were made in normal-hearing participants. Primary tones had fixed frequencies (f2 = 4000 Hz; f1 / f2 = 1.22) and a range of levels. Suppressor tones were at three frequencies (fs = 2828, 4100, 4300 Hz) and range of levels. Decrement was defined as the attenuation in DPOAE level due to the presence of a suppressor. A measure of suppression called suppressive intensity was calculated by an equation previously shown to fit DPOAE suppression data. Suppressor pairs, which were the combination of two different frequencies, were presented at levels selected to have equal single-suppressor decrements. A hybrid model that represents a continuum between additive intensity and additive attenuation best described the results. The suppressor pair with the smallest frequency ratio produced decrements that were more consistent with additive intensity. The suppressor pair with the largest frequency ratio produced decrements at the highest level that were consistent with additive attenuation. Other suppressor-pair conditions produced decrements that were intermediate between these two alternative models. The hybrid model provides a useful framework for representing the observed range of interaction when two suppressors are combined.

The Level Effect of Contralateral Acoustic Stimulation (CAS) on the Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emission (DPOAE) Suppression

As an objective and non-invasive method to evaluate functional state of medial olivo cochlear (MOC) system, there has been growing interest in contralateral suppression of distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE). Also, MOC system can be quantified by measuring the difference DPOAE amplitude recorded in the presence of contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS). The purpose of this study is to identify the optimal CAS level for measuring the DPOAE contralateral suppression. In order to do that, the effect of gender, direction of ear, and the CAS level of the DPOAE suppression for normal hearing adults were tested. Data were collected from the thirty six ears of the eighteen subjects with normal hearing in the both ears ranged from 21 to 26 years of age. DPOAE was tested by ILO 292 analyzer in DP-gram function. For each measurement, primary tones frequencies were ratio f2/f1 = 1.22(f1 < f2) and intensities were L1 = 65 dB SPL, L2 = 50 dB SPL. 2f1-f2 DPOAE was elicited using two pure tones and frequencies were measured in the range of 1,000 Hz to 6,727 Hz. Broad band noise was used for CAS of DPOAE. CAS was delivered through a TDH 39 headphone that was placed in the participant’s contralateral ear. CAS level was randomly presented at 50, 60, 65, 70, and 80 dB SPL. The results showed that, first, there was no significant effect of the direction of ear for DPOAE suppression (p > .05). The results showed that the DPOAE suppression was not significantly different between male and female (p > .05). However, the means and SDs of DPOAE suppression for 5 different CAS levels, 50, 60, 65, 70, and 80 dB SPL, were .66(±1.20), 1.02(±1.23), 1.47(±1.73), 1.58(±1.70), and 1.21(±1.46) dB. As the CAS levels increased, the majority of DPOAE suppression increased generally until 70 dB SPL. Taken together, the results of this study showed that CAS at different levels induced mainly DPOAE amplitude suppression. The amount of suppression increased as the CAS level was increased with the rolling phenomenon at 80 dB SPL than 70 dB SPL in CAS level. Consequently, the 70 dB SPL or more level appears to generate the acoustic reflex in normal ears, and the 70 dB SPL or less CAS level is expected to be efficient for observing decent DPOAE suppression.

Signal-Processing Strategy for Restoration of Cross-Channel Suppression in Hearing-Impaired Listeners

Because frequency components interact nonlinearly with each other inside the cochlea, the loudness growth of tones is relatively simple in comparison to the loudness growth of complex sounds. The term suppression refers to a reduction in the response growth of one tone in the presence of a second tone. Suppression is a salient feature of normal cochlear processing and contributes to psychophysical masking. Suppression is evident in many measurements of cochlear function in subjects with normal hearing, including distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). Suppression is also evident, to a lesser extent, in subjects with mild-to-moderate hearing loss. This paper describes a hearing-aid signal-processing strategy that aims to restore both loudness growth and two-tone suppression in hearing-impaired listeners. The prescription of gain for this strategy is based on measurements of loudness by a method known as categorical loudness scaling. The proposed signal-processing strategy reproduces measured DPOAE suppression tuning curves and generalizes to any number of frequency components. The restoration of both normal suppression and normal loudness has the potential to improve hearing-aid performance and user satisfaction.

Mild maternal iron deficiency anemia induces DPOAE suppression and cochlear hair cell apoptosis by caspase activation in young guinea pigs

Iron deficiency (ID) anemia (IDA) alters auditory neural normal development in the mammalian cochlea. Previous results suggest that mild maternal IDA during pregnancy and lactation altered the hearing and nervous system development of the young offspring, but the mechanisms underlying the association are incompletely understood. The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of apoptosis in the development of sensory hair cells following mild maternal IDA during pregnancy and lactation. We established a maternal anemia model in female guinea pigs by using a mild iron deficient diet. The offspring were weaned on postnatal day (PND) 9 and then was given the iron sufficient diet. Maternal blood samples were collected on gestational day (GD) 21, GD 42, GD 63 and PND 9, serum level of iron (SI) or hemoglobin (Hb) was measured. Blood samples of pups were collected on PND 9 for SI measurement. On PND 24, pups were examined the distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) task, and then the cochleae were harvested for assessment of apoptosis by immunohistochemistry of cysteine–aspartic acid proteases 3/9 (caspase-3/9) and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling (TUNEL) assay, and by double immunofluorescence for the colocalization of TUNEL and caspase-3. Blood samples of pups were collected on PND 24 for SI and Hb measurements. Here we show that mild maternal IDA during pregnancy and lactation resulted in hearing impairment, decreased hair cell number, caspase-3/9 activation and increased apoptotic cell number of young guinea pigs. These results indicate a key role for apoptosis in inhibition of hair cell development, caused by mild maternal IDA during pregnancy and lactation.

Contralateral suppression of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions: A potential diagnostic tool to evaluate the vestibular nerve

The amplitude of distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) is suppressed in one ear when the contralateral ear is subjected to sound stimulation. Contralateral suppression of DPOAE is the phenomenon resulted by the efferent cochlear innervation on the outer hair cells via medial olivocochlear bundle (MOCB) and inferior vestibular nerve. We assumed that DPOAE would not be suppressed by contralateral sound stimulation in patients with vestibular nerve lesion as long as the specific pathway conveying that efferent innervation is affected.To test this hypothesis, we compared the amount of DPOAE contralateral suppression in patients with vestibular neuritis and healthy controls. Twenty healthy volunteers without hearing loss and vestibulopathy, and 13 patients with vestibular neuritis were recruited. DP audiogram was measured without contralateral sound stimulation and then with contralateral sound stimulation (70dB HL of 2kHz narrow band noise, NBN). The suppression value of DPOAE was evaluated according to the f2 frequency and was defined as the amount of DPOAE suppression: An−Ao, where An represents the DPOAE amplitude in the presence of contralateral NBN, and Ao represents the DPOAE amplitude in the absence of NBN. Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) was performed in some patients with vestibular neuritis. The suppression values of DPOAE were compared between groups and were analyzed according to the results of cVEMP. The amount of suppression of DPOAE during contralateral sound stimulation was significantly reduced in the patient group compared to control at the f2 frequencies of 1257, 1587, and 2002Hz (P=0.045, P<0.001, P=0.009, respectively). However, the results of contralateral suppression of DPOAE were not consistent with the results of cVEMP in this study.Efferent cochlear innervation was affected in vestibular neuritis. Evaluation of contralateral suppression of DPOAE can be a potential diagnostic tool to evaluate the functional integrity of the vestibular nerve. Further studies are necessary to clarify this mechanism.

Distortion-product otoacoustic emissions and contralateral suppression findings in children with Asperger's Syndrome

ObjectivesChildren with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) often demonstrate auditory behaviors such as hypersensitivity to sounds and poor performance in noisy environments. These auditory behaviors may be related to cochlear dysfunction and abnormal medial olivocochlear bundle (MOCB) activity. The objective of this study was to examine the distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) with and without contralateral white noise to evaluate outer hair cell activity and MOCB activity in children with AS. MethodsA case control study where 18 boys with AS and 18 age-matched control subjects participated in the study. For both groups, DPOAEs were recorded at 4031, 2627, 1969, and 1359Hz f2 frequencies with and without contralateral white noise at 30dB SL. DPOAE SNRs and difference scores were analyzed for possible differences between both groups and age subgroups (young and old children). ResultsIn the quiet condition, there were no significant group or ear differences in DPOAEs SNR. However, DPOAEs SNR were larger at 4031Hz than at lower frequencies in both groups, mostly due to negative effect of background noise on low frequency response. Contralateral noise resulted in both suppression and enhancement of the DPOAE SNRs in 93% of the control group and 90% of the AS group. However, there were no significant differences in suppression and enhancement between the two groups or age subgroups. The young controls had right ear advantage and significantly larger suppression at all frequencies except 4031Hz than old controls. The young children with AS had slight left ear advantage and significantly larger suppression only at 2672Hz compared to the old children with AS. ConclusionsThe results, indicating minor differences in DPOAEs and contralateral suppression and enhancement of DPOAEs between both control and AS groups and age subgroups, suggest subtle differences in the function of the outer hair cells and the MOCB activity. Therefore, other central auditory processing in the temporal lobe, limbic system and autonomic nervous system may be involved in the generation of hypersensitivity to sounds and difficulty understanding in noisy environments in children with AS.

Postnatal maturation of contralateral DPOAE suppression in a precocious animal model (chinchilla) of the human neonate

Conclusion: In the neonatal chinchilla, the degree of contralateral distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) suppression and the latency and time constants of suppression are immature for 40–60 days. This suggests that olivocochlear efferent innervation of outer hair cells is not fully mature at birth in this animal model, and this may also be the case for human neonates. Objectives: To track postnatal changes in the dynamics of the olivocochlear efferent system in an animal model with cochlear development at birth similar to that in humans. Methods: Real-time measurements of contralateral DPOAE suppression were made in 79 ears of anaesthetized chinchillas, ranging in age from 1 day to 70 days. An adult control group (13 ears) was also tested. DPOAE (2f1-f2; f2 = 4.4 kHz; f2/f1 = 1.22) input/output functions were measured. Dynamics of contralateral broadband noise suppression were measured, including latency and suppression time constants. Results: DPOAE amplitude input/output functions are immature until 20–30 days postnatally. The maturation period for contralateral suppression amplitude is about 30 days. Latency of onset suppression was 40 ms at birth reducing to adult values (23 ms) at 40 days. The DPOAE suppression time constant was about 350 ms at birth and mature (230 ms) at 60 days.

Suppression tuning of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions: Results from cochlear mechanics simulation

This paper presents the results of simulating the acoustic suppression of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) from a computer model of cochlear mechanics. A tone suppressor was introduced, causing the DPOAE level to decrease, and the decrement was plotted against an increasing suppressor level. Suppression threshold was estimated from the resulting suppression growth functions (SGFs), and suppression tuning curves (STCs) were obtained by plotting the suppression threshold as a function of suppressor frequency. Results show that the slope of SGFs is generally higher for low-frequency suppressors than high-frequency suppressors, resembling those obtained from normal hearing human ears. By comparing responses of normal (100%) vs reduced (50%) outer-hair-cell sensitivities, the model predicts that the tip-to-tail difference of the STCs correlates well with that of intra-cochlear iso-displacement tuning curves. The correlation is poorer, however, between the sharpness of the STCs and that of the intra-cochlear tuning curves. These results agree qualitatively with what was recently reported from normal-hearing and hearing-impaired human subjects, and examination of intra-cochlear model responses can provide the needed insight regarding the interpretation of DPOAE STCs obtained in individual ears.
