Supersymmetry in nuclear physics

I discuss several new developments in nuclear supersymmetry, in particular the identification of a new supersymmetric quartet of nuclei in the A ~ 190 region of the nuclear mass table consisting of the 192,193Os and 193,194Ir nuclei, and a study of correlations between different transfer reactions by means of generalized F-spin and SU(3) isoscalar factors. The relevant SU(3) isoscalar factors are derived in explicit form.

Supersymmetric classification of cluster states in light nuclei

The Lie superalgebra u(4|4) is proposed and used to classify cluster states in light nuclei by means of a mass formula based on a particular chain of subalgebras. The building blocks, n,p,d and α particles are the superpartners corresponding to the totally supersymmetric N = 1 IRREP of u(4|4). A number of states of other nuclei (from 5He to 16O) are interpreted as cluster configurations formed by 2 or more building blocks and corresponding to N = 2, 3, … and their energy is reproduced to a reasonable accuracy. The u(4|4) cluster supersymmetry seems therefore to be approximately realized in nature since it accommodates in a single scheme many nuclear states pertaining to different even and odd isotopes. This furnishes a second important example of supersymmetry in nuclear physics.

Two-Nucleon Transfer Reactions Uphold Supersymmetry in Atomic Nuclei

The spectroscopic strengths of two-nucleon transfer reactions constitute a stringent test for two-nucleon correlations in the nuclear wave functions. A set of closed analytic expressions for ratios of spectroscopic factors is derived in the framework of nuclear supersymmetry. These ratios are parameter independent and provide a direct test of the wave functions. A comparison between the recently measured 198Hg(d-->,alpha)196Au reaction and the predictions from the nuclear quartet supersymmetry lends further support to the validity of supersymmetry in nuclear physics.

On extended supersymmetries in nuclear physics

We prove that N = 2 SUSY of the system describing interaction of pseudoscalar isovector pionic field with nucleon field can be extended to N = 3,4,5 SUSYs. Discrete symmetries of this equation are studied when external field has definite parities. It is shown that for some classes of interaction the problem possesses a parasupersymmetry (PSUSY) with two parasupercharges.

The role of dynamic symmetries in physics is discussed, with particular emphasis to nuclear structure physics. The dynamic symmetries of the interacting boson model, with dynamic algebra U(6), are introduced and experimental examples are presented. Dynamic symmetries provide a classification scheme for even-even nuclei. Symmetries are further enlarged to supersymmetries, involving both fermionic and bosonic degrees of freedom. The dynamic supersymmetries of the interacting boson-fermion model, with dynamic superalgebra U(6/{Omega}), where {Omega} is the dimension of the fermionic space, are introduced and experimental examples presented. Supersymmetries provide a classification scheme for odd-even, even-odd and odd-odd nuclei.

Possible evidence for dynamical supersymmetry in the hadron spectrum.

A relativistic supersymmetric quantum mechanics is proposed which uses Osp(1,4)\ensuremath{\supset}SO(3,2) for the spectrum and constrained Hamiltonian quantum mechanics for the dynamics of one-hadron systems. It combines baryon and meson towers into infinite supermultiplets in a way similar to the use of supersymmetries in nuclear physics. The predicted mass formula is fitted to the masses of baryon and meson resonances.

Supersymmetry in nuclear physics

Applications of supersymmetry considerations to problems in nuclear physics are briefly reviewed. A few, selected, examples are discussed, and it is shown that experimental evidence supports the occurrence of dynamic supersymmetries in nuclear spectra.
