High energy storage density achieved in BNT‐based ferroelectric translucent ceramics under low electric fields

AbstractThe development of ceramics with superior energy storage performance and transparency holds the potential to broaden their applications in various fields, including optoelectronics, energy storage devices, and transparent displays. However, designing a material that can achieve high energy density under low electric fields remains a challenge. In this work, (1−x)Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3−xBaZr0.3Ti0.7O3:0.6mol%Er3+ (abbreviated as (1−x)BNT−xBZT:0.6%Er3+) ferroelectric translucent ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid‐state reaction method. The energy storage properties of (1−x)BNT−xBZT:0.6%Er3+ are systematically investigated under low electric fields by modulating the coupling between coexisting phase structures of polar nano regions. Especially, 0.9BNT–0.1BZT:0.6%Er3+ ceramic exhibits an ultra‐high maximum polarization (Pmax = 66.3 µC/cm2), large recoverable energy storage density (Wrec = 2.95 J/cm3), total energy storage density (W = 5.75 J/cm3), and energy storage efficiency (η = 51.3%) under 190 kV/cm. The sample also exhibits excellent thermal stability (30‐150°C) and transmittance (∼28%). This work could facilitate the advancement of energy storage systems that are more efficient and cost‐effective, and also provide opportunities for the design and manufacture of novel devices.

Rational design of hierarchical porous reduced graphene oxide/9,10-phenanthraquinone/porous carbon nanocomposites for high-performance supercapacitors

The development of advanced electrode material is crucial for promoting the application of new high-performance green energy storage devices and remains a great challenge. Herein, by introducing porous carbon (PC) or carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to further modify the redox-active 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (PQ) molecule non-covalently functionalized reduced graphene oxide (RGO), we have designed and synthesized RGO/PQ/PCs (RPPs) and RGO/PQ/CNTs-10 (RPC-10) nanocomposites using a simple one-step solvothermal method. Benefiting from the optimization of the hierarchical porous nanostructures and each composition further strengthens their respective advantages in the novel synthesized nanocomposites (RPPs and RPC-10), the RPPs and RPC-10 electrodes demonstrated significantly superior electrochemical energy storage performance over the RGO and RGO/PQ (RP) electrodes, especially for the RPP-10 electrode with a high specific capacitance of 343.5 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 and good rate capability (69.23 %, 0.5 − 40 A g−1). Furthermore, both the symmetric supercapacitor assembled with the optimal RPP-10 electrode and the hybrid supercapacitor assembled with the RPP-10 negative electrode and the NCSRC-24 positive electrode previously reported show excellent energy densities and ultra-long cycling stabilities. This result demonstrates that the synthesized novel RPP-10 nanocomposite is a highly promising candidate for new light-weight, sustainable, high-flexible and high-performance energy storage devices.

Electron Delocalization and Electrochemical Potential Distribution Phenomena in Faradaic Electrode Materials for Understanding Electrochemical Behavior

AbstractElectrochemical energy storage devices are built upon the foudations of batteries and supercapacitors. In the past decade, new pseudocapacitor‐like electrodes are intensively developed to obtain superior energy storage performance. Pseudocapacitive matarials store charge through Faradaic processes, while the electrochemical signal remains like electrochemical double‐layer capacitors (EDLCs). To address this controversy, an analytical model is introduced for evaluating the voltammograms of electrode materials. Given this, the work focuses on understanding the origin of the pseudocapacitive phenomena in the cyclic voltammetry (CV) electrochemical signal. Based on electron transfer mechanism and tunnelling effect within the atomic structure, pseudocapacitive matarials possess a high electron delocalization possibility related to the redox centers number and initiates the electrochemical potential distribution among neighboring redox sites, which is consequently observed in the electrochemical signal as the plateau feature in CV, like EDLC. First, the determination of the capacitive tendency of various electrode materials is proposed, which turns out to be relative to the redox centers number (n) and total charge (Z). Here, when this number is large, electron hopping will very likely happen. The developed model is versatile to predict rate/potential regimes for the maximum faradaic storage, and then well differentiates the pseudocapacitive and battery materials.

Enhanced energy-storage properties in (Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3 ceramics by doping linear perovskite materials Ca0.85Bi0.1(Sn0.5Ti0.5)O3

For energy storage applications in Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 (BNT)-based materials, the key challenges are the premature polarization saturation and low breakdown electric field (Eb), which confine the energy storage capacity of BNT and significantly restrict progress in advancing pulsed power capacitors. Hence, the cooperative optimization strategy of band structure and defect engineering was proposed, which successfully obtained a high recoverable energy density of 3.83 J/cm3 and an energy efficiency of 77.9 % in the Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-0.12Ca0.85Bi0.1(Sn0.5Ti0.5)O3 (BNT-0.12CBST) ceramics. Doping the BNT matrix with CBST has been shown to not only reduce grain size but also enhance relaxor behavior, which collectively improves breakdown strength and delays polarization saturation. Furthermore, the x = 0.12 ceramic also exhibits a commendable discharge power density of 91.9 MW/cm3 and a transient discharge time of 40 ns. The higher resistivity and lower oxygen vacancy concentration are conductive to acquire superior breakdown electric field and energy storage performance. We determine the crystal structure, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the studied ceramics in a wide range of temperatures and concentrations, and a phase diagram is constructed, which illustrates the complex phases present and their transformation behavior. Our work provides an effective strategy to optimize the energy-storage of dielectric ceramics, and shows great potential for practical applications in pulse power systems.

High energy storage performance of (1-x)Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3-xK0.5Na0.5NbO3 ceramics via a combined strategy of fine grains and multiphase polar nanoregions

Electrostatic dielectric capacitors have received great attention due to their ultrafast charging-discharging speed and ultrahigh power density. However, the low energy storage density and efficiency are the main obstacles to their practical applications. In this work, solid solution relaxor ceramics with different proportions of lead-free ferroelectrics Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (BST) and K0.5Na0.5NbO3 (KNN) were prepared. Superior energy storage performance was achieved in the 0.7BST-0.3KNN ceramics with a breakdown strength (Eb) of 510 kV/cm, a recoverable energy storage density (Wrec) of 4.10 J/cm3, and an energy storage efficiency (η) of 80 %, which was fairly stable over the temperature range of 30–100 °C. Since multiple cations with different valence and radius coexist on the equivalent sites (A or B sites) of the solid solutions, the chemical disorder and the corresponding lattice distortion induced the coexistence of cubic, tetragonal, and orthorhombic phases, as well as the appearance of the multiphase polar nanoregions (PNRs), making the ferroelectric hysteresis loops linear. At the same time, ultrafine grains in the ceramics greatly improved the Eb. For achieving excellent energy storage performance, this work demonstrates a potential candidate of (1-x)BST-xKNN lead-free solid solution ceramics and a combined strategy of fine grains and multiphase PNRs.

Electron-interactive 1D porous vertical NiCo2O4 nanowire and 3D N-doped graphene aerogel enable high hydroxyl-ion adsorption capacity for superior energy storage

Supercapacitors are a kind of highly efficient energy-storage device with long cycle life and high power density, however, their specific capacitance is insufficient for further application and development. In this work, a novel composite with one-dimensional (1D) NiCo2O4 nanowire arrays (NiCo2O4-NWA) vertically supported on three-dimensional (3D) nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel (NGA) is designed and facilely realized by hydrothermal reaction and thermal treatment. The NiCo2O4 nanowires, with length of ∼1 μm and diameter of ∼25 nm, display a porous structure and are regularly arranged on both sides of the sheets in nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel. The aerogel-supporting NiCo2O4 nanowires demonstrate a remarkably high specific capacitance of 2742 F g−1 at 1 A g−1, and an outstanding cyclic stability with capacitance retention of 90% even after 10,000 cycles at 80 A g−1. The density functional theory calculation shows the narrow band gap (0.32 eV) and strong electronic interaction and hydroxyl-ion adsorption effect of NiCo2O4 supported on NGA, resulting in superior specific capacitance and energy storage performance. The 3D nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel supporting 1D nanowire arrays represent a promising high-performance electrode material for application in the supercapacitors and other electrochemical energy-conversion and storage equipment.

Superior energy storage and discharge performance achieved in PbHfO3-based antiferroelectric ceramics

Dielectric capacitors prepared by antiferroelectric (AFE) materials have the advantages of large power density and fast discharge ability. It has been a focus on the improvement of the recoverable energy density (Wrec) and discharge energy–density (Wdis) in the AFE ceramics. To address the above issue, optimizing the proportion of components is proposed for enhancing ceramic antiferroelectricity, ultimately improving the breakdown strength (Eb) and Wrec. In this work, an ultrahigh Wrec (14.3 J/cm3) with an excellent energy efficiency (η) of 81.1% is obtained in (Pb0.96Sr0.02La0.02)(Hf0.9Sn0.1)O3 AFE ceramic at electric field of 490 kV/cm, which is the maximum value reported in lead-based AFE ceramics fabricated by the conventional solid-state reaction method so far. The multistage phase transition induced by the electric field is observed in the polarization–electric field (P–E) hysteresis loops. Furthermore, an outstanding power density (PD) of 335 MW/cm3 and an excellent Wdis of 8.97 J/cm3 with a rapid discharge speed (102 ns) are obtained at electric field of 390 kV/cm. In addition, (Pb0.96Sr0.02La0.02)(Hf0.9Sn0.1)O3 ceramics also possess an excellent thermal and frequency stability. These exceptional properties indicate that (Pb0.98−xSrxLa0.02)(Hf0.9Sn0.1)O3 ceramics are a potential candidate for pulsed power devices and power electronic devices.

Low-Field-Driven Superior Energy Storage Effect with Excellent Thermal Stability by Constructing Coexistent Glasses.

In this work, we found that the defreezing coexistent glassy ferroelectric states hold significant potential for achieving superior energy storage performance, especially under low fields, by using phase field simulations and experimental approaches. A remarkable room-temperature energy recoverable storage density Wr exceeding 2.7 J/cm3 with a high efficiency η surpassing 80% under a low electric field of 170 kV/cm was obtained in the x = 6-12% compositions of x[Bi(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3]-(1-x)[0.94(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3-0.06BaTiO3-1%MnO2] (BNBT-BMN) ceramics due to the combination of low Pr and high Pm of the coexistent ferroelectric glasses. Intriguingly, the superior Wr and η of the coexistent state of glasses can also be maintained in a wide temperature range of 293-430 K, indicating the excellent thermal stability of the energy storage behavior. Importantly, the Wr and η of this glass coexistent composition increase upon heating from room temperature to 360 K due to the defreezing process, leading to maximum Wr ∼ 2.9 J/cm3 with high efficiency η ∼ 90% of x = 10% at 360 K. When considering both energy storage behavior and thermal stability under low fields (<250 kV/cm), the BNBT-BMN ceramics outperform nearly all lead-free counterparts available today. Consequently, our work not only expands the research scope of ferroic glasses but also establishes a new paradigm for developing superior lead-free dielectrics suitable for high-temperature energy storage devices.

Effective strategy for achieving superior energy storage performance in lead-free BaTiO3–Bi(Zn2/3(Nb0.85Ta0.15)1/3)O3 ferroelectric ceramics

Material with low remnant polarizations with slim hysteresis loops are favorable for energy conversion efficiencies and have been receiving immense interest as energy storage materials with high recoverable energy densities. This study proposes a noble barium-based dielectric ceramic ((1-x)BaTiO3-xBi[Zn2/3(Nb0.85Ta0.15)1/3]O3) (BT-BZNT), with x ranging from 0.05 to 0.25 manufactured using solid-state reaction method. All the samples exhibited dual crystal symmetry revealing the coexistence of tetragonal (p4mm) and rhombohedral (R3c) phases with dense microstructures. The activation energy for conduction increased (0.37–0.61 eV) with BZNT substitution which might be attributed to a decrease in the density of states N(EF) from 3.91 × 1018 to 1.28 × 1018 eV−1 cm−3. This implies that oxygen vacancies and defects are reduced in samples with greater BZNT substitution, validating the elemental composition and oxidation states, which significantly enhance the energy storage capacity. At a lower applied field of 180 kV/cm, the BT-BZNT3 ceramic displayed a remarkably high recoverable energy density of 2.06 J/cm3 with an energy efficiency of 78 %. In the same applied field, an improvement in energy efficiency up to 96 % is achieved for higher BZNT substituted samples. These results have implications for the development of high-performance BT-BZNT ceramics for their use in future energy storage applications.

NaNbO3‐Based Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors with Ultrahigh Energy Storage Performance

AbstractWith the gradual promotion of new energy technologies, there is a growing demand for capacitors with high energy storage density, high operating temperature, high operating voltage, and good temperature stability. In recent years, researchers have been devoted to improving the energy storage properties of lead‐based, titanium‐based, and iron‐based multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). However, limited research has been conducted into MLCC development using NaNbO3 (NN)‐based materials. In this paper, the successful achievement of excellent overall energy storage performance in a novel NaNbO3–(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3–Bi(Mg0.5Hf0.5)O3 lead‐free MLCCs is presented. The disordered tilting around the cp axis, disrupts Na and Bi ions' long‐range displacements and induces PNRs and strong relaxor behavior, which ensures a superior energy storage performance, together with the multilayer ceramic design strategy. As a result, the NN‐based MLCC device presents an ultra‐high Wrec = 12.65 J cm−3 and η = 88.5%, simultaneously showing superior temperature stability (Wrec varies &lt;±1% and η varies &lt;±6% from −50 to 125 °C) and fatigue resistance (Wrec and η vary &lt;±1% over 107 cycles). This study highlights the advanced energy storage potential of NaNbO3‐based MLCCs for various applications, and ushers in a new era for designing high‐performance lead‐free capacitors that can operate in harsh environments.

Topological Vortex Domain Engineering for High Dielectric Energy Storage Performance

AbstractEnhancing the energy storage performance of dielectric material through the adoption of a novel domain strategy is highly desirable. In this study, Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3‐based thin films are fabricated with topological vortex domains (VDs) by controlling the grain size and investigated the correlation between these VDs and the macroscopic polarization response, which is crucial for the energy storage performance. The emergence of VDs, in contrast to conventional ferroelectric domains, promotes polarization reversal in dielectric materials. Additionally, in contrast to the severely reduced saturation polarization typically noted in conventional relaxor ferroelectrics (RFE), the presence of VDs in RFE leads to only a slight reduction in saturation polarization. These two advantages contribute to the superior energy storage performance of the films with VDs. This approach offers a novel and promising direction for developing dielectrics with high‐energy storage capabilities.

Novel lead-free KNN-based ceramic with giant energy storage density, ultra-high efficiency and excellent thermal stability via relaxor strategy

(1-x)(0.9 K0.5Na0.5NbO3-0.1Ba0.4Sr0.6TiO3)-xBi(Zn0.5Zr0.5)O3 ceramics (abbreviated as (1-x)KNNBST-xBZZ, x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20) were synthesized using the solid-state reaction method and their structure and electrical characteristics, including dielectric and ferroelectric properties, were systematically investigated. The incorporation of Bi/Zn/Zr (BZZ) elements into the KNNBST system results in a substantial increase in volume density, a dominant cubic crystal structure, and enhanced relaxor behaviour. Consequently, these modifications have led to superior energy storage performance. The 0.9KNNBST-0.1BZZ ceramics shows excellent recoverable energy storage density (Wrec = 5.42 J/cm3), and ultra-high energy efficiency (η = 91.09 %) at 470 kV/cm. Moreover, the 0.9KNNBST-0.1BZZ ceramics exhibits favorable frequency stability (1–1000 Hz) and temperature stability (27–190 ℃). The outstanding energy storage characteristics of (1-x)KNNBST-xBZZ ceramics make them highly promising for advanced pulse power capacitors and various energy storage applications.

P(VDF-HFP)-based nanocomposites with elaborative PN-junction nanofillers displaying high energy storage performance

Given its wide application ranges, dielectric capacitors have garnered extensive attentions. However, due to the excessive premature agglomeration of free electrons, capacitors with nanocomposites as dielectrics fail to attain high breakdown strength (Eb), and thereby constrain their ability to achieve superior energy storage performances. To alleviate the effects of free electrons and secondary impact-ionized electrons (SIE) on Eb and leakage currents, here, a novel organic-inorganic core–shell Ni(OH)2@PDI (N@P) nanofiller with opposite double-PN-junction was well-designed and successfully synthesized by coating p-typed Ni(OH)2 nanosheets with n-typed perylene diimide (PDI). It could reduce free electron kinetic energy and mitigate SIE amounts regardless of the applied electric field direction. Furthermore, PDI, as an organic compound, can uniformly and densely coat onto surfaces of 2D Ni(OH)2, as well as enhance compatibilities between Ni(OH)2 and matrix, and thereby reducing structure defects at their interfaces. Last but not the least, Ni(OH)2 nanosheets also contribute to Eb improvement via acting as scattering centers. Experimental and simulation results concurrently affirmed positive influences of organic-inorganic N@P nanofillers on discharge energy density (Ud) and efficiency (η) of P(VDF-HFP)-based (PVH-based) nanocomposites. Remarkably, 1.3 vol% N@P/PVH achieves a high Ud of 21.7 J/cm3 and η of 81.2 % under 569.0 MV/m. More importantly, it maintains an excellent energy storage performance throughout 104 cyclic tests. This study presents a valid strategy for concurrently improving Ud and η of polymer-based nanocomposites.

Stable Aluminum Metal Anode Enabled by Dual-Functional Molybdenum Nanoparticles.

Constructing robust anode with strong aluminophilicity and rapid desolvation kinetics is essential for achieving high utilization, long-term durability, and superior rate performance in Al metal-based energy storage, yet remains largely unexplored. Herein, molybdenum nanoparticles embedded onto nitrogen-doped graphene (Mo@NG) are designed and prepared as Al host to regulate the deposition behavior and achieve homogeneous Al plating/stripping. The monodispersed Mo nanoparticles reduce the desolvation energy barrier and promote the deposition kinetics of Al. Additionally, Mo nanoparticles act as aluminophilic nucleation sites to minimize the Al nucleation overpotential, further guiding uniform and dense Al deposition. As a result, the dual-functional Mo@NG endows Al anodes with low voltage hysteresis, reversible Al plating/stripping with high coulombic efficiency, and excellent high-rate capability under 5mA cm-2. Moreover, the as-designed Al metal full batteries deliver a high capacity retention of 92.8% after 3000 cycles at 1 A g-1. This work provides an effective solution to optimize the electrochemical properties of Al metal anode from the perspective of desolvation and deposition reactions, towards the development of high-safety and long-cycling aluminum-ion batteries.

Superior comprehensive energy storage performances in Eu-doped AgNbO3 antiferroelectric ceramics

Antiferroelectric (AFE) dielectrics are considered promising materials for pulse power applications due to their high energy density. However, the energy storage performance of AgNbO3 lead-free AFE ceramics suffers from low breakdown strength (Eb) and weak AFE stability at room temperature. Along these lines, in this work, the tape-casting process together with Eu-doping was used to improve Eb and enhance AFE stability of the AgNbO3 ceramics. As a result, an ultrahigh recoverable energy storage density of 10.0 J/cm3 was obtained in the (Ag0.91Eu0.03)NbO3 ceramic, which surpasses all the reported values of AgNbO3-based ceramics in the literatures. Meanwhile, the recoverable energy storage density of (Ag0.91Eu0.03)NbO3 ceramic showed excellent temperature- and frequency-stability. Interestingly, a remarkable discharge energy density of 8.0 J/cm3 was obtained in the pulsed charge/discharge test. These results clearly indicate that the (Ag0.91Eu0.03)NbO3 ceramics prepared via the tape-casting process exhibit great potential for energy storage applications and shed light on the design of energy storage ceramics in other materials.

High-performance energy storage in BNST-based lead-free ferroelectric ceramics achieved through high-entropy engineering

The utilization of a high entropy approach for the design of high-performance perovskite dielectric capacitors has been gaining much attention for the development of next-generation pulse power capacitors. Despite this, there are still challenges to further enhance their energy storage density and efficiency. To address this, a high-entropy strategy is proposed to significantly improve the energy storage characteristics of ceramics by increasing the configurational entropy and delaying saturation polarization. This approach has resulted in an ultra-high recoverable energy storage density (Wrec) of 7.16 J/cm3 and a high efficiency (η) of 93.3 % for 0.8[0.65(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3-0.35SrTiO3)]-0.2[Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.2Sn0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2)O3] (abbreviated as 0.8BNST-0.2Ba(5 M)O) ceramic. The inclusion of Ba(5 M)O high entropy oxides has resulted in slender polarization–electric field hysteresis loops with delayed polarization saturation. The increase in atomic configuration entropy, degree of atomic disorder and lattice distortion due to the Ba(5 M)O high entropy oxides, has led to an increase in breakdown field, improved energy storage density and efficiency. Furthermore, excellent thermal stability (30–150 ℃), superior frequency stability (5–1000 Hz), and robust fatigue (100–105 cycles) endurance were achieved. The high entropy strategy has been demonstrated to be an effective method for the design of novel capacitors with superior energy storage performance.

Superior energy-storage performances achieved in NaNbO3-based antiferroelectric ceramics by phase-structure and relaxation regulation

Lead-free NaNbO3-based antiferroelectric (AFE) ceramics are highly considered as promising substitutes of lead-based ones in dielectric energy-storage field. However, their low breakdown strength and large electric hysteresis loss originating from the field-induced metastable ferroelectric (FE) Q phase and/or AFE P phase still remains challenging, which severely impedes the further improvement of energy-storage performances. Herein, an effective phase-structure and relaxation regulation via A-site cation substitution strategy has been proposed to solve this issue. The phase-structures of the designed NN-based AFE ceramics evolve from orthorhombic P phase to R phase accompanying with the enhancement of relaxation behavior. Accordingly, an effective transformation from a plump and pinched polarization–electric field (P–E) hysteresis loop to a slim and slanted one has undergone, contributing to superior energy-storage performances. Noticeably, an expected large recoverable energy density (Wrec) of 4.0 J/cm3 with a high energy conversion efficiency (η) of 80.0 % was realized in 0.94(Na0.88Sm0.04NbO3)-0.06(BiFeO3) relaxor AFE ceramics at 460 kV/cm. Meanwhile, a great discharge energy density (Wdis) of 1.2 J/cm3 and a large power density (PD) of 92.4 MW/cm3 were achieved at 200 kV/cm. Furthermore, the favorable functional reliabilities in frequency, temperature, and fatigue cycle were also confirmed. These results not only demonstrate the great potential of NaNbO3-based relaxor AFE ceramics for dielectric energy-storage applications, but also confirm the validity of the strategy proposed in this work to obtain superior energy-storage performances.

Boosting capacitive performance of lead-free relaxor ferroelectrics by introducing a linear dielectric

As an important core component used in high-power pulse electronic systems, dielectric ceramic capacitors have gained great interest because of their ultrahigh powder density (PD) and fast discharge speed (t0.9). However, inferior energy storage performance (ESP) greatly limits the development of energy storage devices with the requirement of miniaturization and integration. Herein, we propose a feasible approach to introduce linear dielectric CaTiO3 (CT) into (Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3 (BNT) for the design of engineered relaxor ferroelectrics to tune ESP at the grain, domain, and macroscopic scales. The results demonstrate that introducing CT generates enhanced relaxor behavior with highly dynamic polar nanoregions, refines grain size, and suppresses dielectric loss, synergistically yielding increased breakdown strength, negligible remnant polarization, and a nearly linear polarization hysteresis loop. Consequently, superior ESP is achieved in BNT-0.3CT relaxor ferroelectric ceramics with a large energy density (∼5.65 J/cm3) and a high efficiency (∼88.1 %). Based on CT-induced merits, the excellent temperature/frequency/cycling stabilities and remarkable charge-discharge properties featuring a high PD of 200.4 MW/cm3, high discharge energy density of 2.27 J/cm3 and ultrashort t0.9 of 58 ns of the designed ceramics broaden the actual application prospects. This work demonstrates that introducing linear dielectric CT holds great promise for developing high-performance energy storage dielectrics.
