Efficient oil/water separation using a superhydrophobic polyurethane sponge fabricated by a facile dip-coating method

ABSTRACT Due to the numerous incidents of oil spills and the increase in the production of industrial effluents containing oil, the separation of oil and water has become an important global issue. This research used a simple dip-coating method to fabricate a superhydrophobic polyurethane sponge using SiO2 nanoparticles and vinyl trimethoxy silane. XRD, FESEM, EDX, elemental mapping, FT-IR, DLS, and measurement of mechanical resistance, and water contact angle were used to characterise the desired sponge. The modified polyurethane sponge exhibited a water contact angle of 151.32 ± 1.06°. The sorption capacity of the desired sponge measured for various types of oily pollutants and organic solvents were in the range of 30.50 ± 2.04to 66.80 ± 1.64 g.g−1. The separation efficiency of the polyurethane sponge was in the range of 97.14 ± 0.40 to 99.15 ± 0.30. Furthermore, the ability of the desired sponge to separate the oil in the real effluent of the casting unit of a steel production company was investigated. Also, the reusability and the ability of removing emulsified oil droplets of the modified polyurethane sponge were studied. As a result, the as prepared polyurethane sponge can be considered a sorbent with the potential to separate oily pollutants from water and treat oily industrial wastewater.

Facile construction of multifunctional 3D smart MOF-based polyurethane sponges with photocatalytic ability for efficient separation of oil-in-water emulsions and co-existing organic pollutant

Water resources are increasingly being damaged by human activities, and it is crucial to deal effectively with polluted water resources. Due to the diversity of pollution sources (oil, organic dyes, and other complex pollutants), it makes sense to develop a material that can handle these pollutants simultaneously. In this article, we construct a simple and fast method to fabricate multifunctional superhydrophobic polyurethane sponges (PU). A superhydrophobic composite coating constructed from ZIF-8, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and stearic acid (SA) was attached to the surface of the polyurethane sponge by a simple impregnation method. Through the above process, we have successfully integrated oil–water separation, photocatalysis, and superhydrophobicity into a polyurethane sponge. The results showed that the PDMS/SA/ZIF-8 polyurethane sponge (PSZPU) had a high hydrophobicity angle (162.9 ± 1.1°). In addition, PSZPU maintains high oil–water separation performance (mean value of separation efficiency > 94.24 %) and superhydrophobicity after oil–water separation cycling tests and a series of harsh environmental tests in acidic and alkaline solutions, high temperatures, abrasion, and UV aging irradiation. Overall, the creation of PSZPU provides a new application for superhydrophobic sponges in water resource treatment.

Effective parameters on fabrication and performance of superhydrophobic/superoleophilic polyurethane sponge: Design of experiment approach

Referring to importance of the oil/water separation as one of the main challenges in the environmental conditions, numerous researches in the superhydrophobic/superoleophilic materials especially in the industrial oily wastewater treatment have been focused. In this study, the commercial polyurethane (PU) sponge was dip-coated by zinc stearate (Zn(St)2) particles and a novel adhesive of hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) cured phenol-formaldehyde resin (PFR). For this purpose, a design of experiment (DOE) was applied to statistically specify the effect of important process variables on the final product properties. The second-order central composite design (CCD) approach based on the response surface methodology (RSM) analysis was conducted by changing namely the Zn(St)2 suspension concentration (2–4 wt%), PFR concentration (10–30 wt%), HMTA/PFR weight ratio (10–20 wt%), and sponge density (12, 15 and 17 kg∙m−3) on the key response output variables including oil and water absorption capacity of the Zn(St)2/HMTA cured PFR-coated PU. The optimal predicted results were experimentally verified and matched well to achieve the modified superhydrophobic PU sponge for the oil/water separation. The characterizations of the modified PU sponge by SEM, EDX mapping, FTIR, XRD, UV-Vis, BET, and TGA results confirmed that the Zn(St)2 uniformly covered the entire PU sponge. In addition, it showed a high demulsification capacity, the absorption capacity of various oil and solvents, and a water contact angle as high as 165° which was further approved to be oil wet in less than <10 millisecond. More importantly, the prepared modified superhydrophobic PU sponge presented an excellent reusability performance and chemical, thermal and mechanical stability in harsh conditions. This stable superhydrophobic PU sponge with the aforementioned outstanding properties is expected to be widely used for the practical oil/water separation.

Super hydrophobic PU sponge modified by poly-vinylidene fluoride/SBA-15@NPS hybrid

ABSTRACT In the present work, we try to design and prepare super-hydrophobic, porous, and activated polyurethane (PU) sponge based on physical and chemical surface coating method. The superhydrophobic sponge was effectively modified utilizing nanoporous carbon (NPC), Santa Barbara Amorphous-15 (SBA-15), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to separation of oil compounds from water. Incorporating of NPC/SBA nanohybrid with sponge provides a proper functional group and large surface area on 3D structure of the PU sponge. Application of PVDF has been used to change the hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties of PU sponge surface. FT-IR, XRD, BET, SEM, EDS, and contact angle were used for characterization of the prepared modified sponge. To determine the separation efficiency of modified sponge, a set of experiments at different organic solvents, time, and temperatures were designed and performed. Applying NPC/SBA nanohybrid in the role of adsorbent will certainly increase separation efficiency of sponge. We believe that composition of NPC, SBA-15, and PVDF could be a considerable candidate in oil/water separation, especially in oil/gas company waste water treatment and filtration processes.

Superhydrophobic and oleophilic polyurethane sponge for oil/water separation

Massive oil spills and the discharge of oily wastewater not only inflict permanent damage upon ecosystems but also pose a significant threat to human health. Developing a low-cost functional material for efficient oil-water separation of multi-type of oil-water mixtures, such as free oil, dispersed oil, and emulsion oil, has always been a difficult challenge. In this work, the rough structure was successfully constructed by etching the surface of polyurethane (PU) sponges with sodium fluoride (NaF) aqueous solution. The introduction of hydroxyl-terminated fluorosilicone oil (HTFO) with hydrophobicity on the surface of PU sponge was followed by using glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) as the "bridge". The modified PU (RSS-PU) sponge had a contact angle of 151 ± 2° for water and 0 ° for oil. In addition, the RSS-PU sponge also demonstrated excellence oil sorption ability, its sorption of vegetable oils reached 47.90 g/g, for organic solvents the highest 72.06 g/g, maintaining its oil-absorbing capacity over multiple cycles. Impressively, the superhydrophobic/superoleophilic properties of the RSS-PU sponge has good durability and chemical stability. Meanwhile the superhydrophobic/superoleophilic characteristics of the RSS-PU sponge enable to effectively separate oil-water mixtures, and achieve separation efficiencies of 94.13% and 82.74% for toluene and water mixture without and with surfactants for emulsifying.

Controllable self-foaming preparation of durable superhydrophobic/superlipophilic polyurethane sponge for efficient oily emulsions separation

Superhydrophobic polyurethane (PU) sponges as ideal absorbent materials have attracted significant interest for oil/water separation while their durability is dramatically limited by the poor mechanochemical stability. In this work, a durable superhydrophobic sponge with special hierarchical micro/nano was fabricated by in-situ anchoring of expanded graphite (EG) and TiO2 particles under polarity-induced phase separation during facile self-foaming process. After maturation for 3 h, the prepared sponge exhibited asymmetric wettability with the water contact angle (WCA) was up to 157.9 ± 1.5° and oil contact angle (OCA) was 0°, which could selectively absorb diverse oils range from 11.48 to 41.60 times of its own weight and oily emulsion separation efficiency was up to 99.80 %. In addition, due to the enhancement of the interface bonding force between the prepared sponge skeleton and EG@TiO2 particles through the crosslinking of foaming resin during the self-foaming process, the absorption capacity of the prepared sponge decreased by only 3.74 % and the stress attenuation was only 14.10 % after 150 absorption cycles, indicating its excellent recyclability and mechanical stability. Notably, when subjected to the harsh environment including acid/alkali conditions, high temperatures, salt solutions and organic solvents, the prepared sponge could remain stable superhydrophobicity with the WCAs all over 154.4° ± 1.5°, demonstrating its excellent chemical stability. Besides, PU/EG@TiO2 sponge demonstrated prominent antifouling and self-cleaning properties. Overall, this work provided an advanced idea for the preparation of superhydrophobic sponge with outstanding mechanochemical stability, which exhibited great potential in the treat of oily emulsified wastewater.

Study on the Mechanism of Rapid Oil-Water Separation by a Fe3 O4 @PMMA@PDMS Intelligent Superhydrophobic Micro/Nanorobot.

We prepared an environmentally friendly intelligent Fe3 O4 @PMMA@PDMS superhydrophobic oil-absorbing material with simple process and excellent performance, and investigated the effects of different particle sizes of Fe3 O4 , different concentrations of PDMS, and different heating times on the superhydrophobicity of the coating. The best performance of the coating was achieved at a particle size combination of 20/500 nm for Fe3 O4 , a PDMS to Fe3 O4 @PMMA mass ratio of 6 : 1, and a heating time of 2 min at 400 °C. H2-SPSS coating not only has excellent superhydrophobicity, abrasion resistance, self-cleaning property, and chemical corrosion, but also has good flux and efficiency for separating oil-water mixture, with fluxes of 40,540, 32,432, and 37,027 Lm-2 h-1 for trichloromethane, dichloromethane and bromoethane, respectively, and separation efficiencies of 99.78 %, 99.74 % and 99.73 %, respectively. In addition, we also prepared a superhydrophobic magnetic polyurethane (SPPU) sponge using Fe3 O4 @PMMA@PDMS, which not only has a good oil absorption capacity of 18-44 g/g for different oil substances, it can also move directionally by magnet attraction and absorb oil along a fixed path. Under the control of the magnet, SPPU completes the whole oil absorption process in only 4 s, showing excellent oil absorption and intelligence.

Facile Fabrication of High-Performance Superhydrophobic Reusable Oil-Absorbing Sponges

Wastewater treatment from oil, oil products and organic mixtures is a very relevant topic that can be successfully utilized to solve problems of severe environmental pollution, such as oil spills, industrial oily wastewater discharges and water treatment in the water treatment process. In this work, we have developed new superhydrophobic magnetic polyurethane (PU) sponges, functionalized with reduced graphene oxide (RGO), MgFe2O4 nanoparticles, and silicone oil AS 100 (SO), as a selective and reusable sorbent for the purification and separation of wastewater from oil and organic solvents. The surface morphology and wettability of the sponge surface were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a contact angle analysis system, respectively. The results showed that the obtained PU sponge PU/RGO/MgFe2O4/SO had excellent mechanical and water-repellent properties, good reusability (lasted more than 20 cycles), as well as fast (immersion time 20 s) and excellent absorption capacity (16.61–44.86 g/g), and additional good magnetic properties, which made it easy to separate the sponge from the water with a magnet. The presence of RGO in the composition of the nanomaterial improves the separating and cleaning properties of the materials and also leads to an increase in the absorption capacity of oil and various organic solvents. The synthesized PU sponge has great potential for practical applications due to its facile fabrication and excellent oil–water separation properties.

PDMS/magnetic lignin sponge for oil/water separation

Recyclable, non-toxic, and degradable biological substrates contribute significantly to super-wetting surfaces. In this work, we prepared magnetic micro-nano super-hydrophobic surfaces through a robust solution with magnetic modified lignin particles as the supporting structure. A novel PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane)/magnetic lignin particle (lignin@Fe3O4)/PDA sponge composite was fabricated. Through dopamine (DA) self-polymerization, covalent deposition of magnetic lignin (ML), and PDMS silane modification, the magnetic super-hydrophobic polyurethane sponge composite (Sponge-P) was synthesized so that the Fe3O4 nanoscale microspheres wrapped with microscale lignin magnetic particles adhered to the sponge surface tighter and were barely dislodged. The as-prepared Sponge-P displayed excellent flexibility and a water contact angle of up to 152.2°. The super-hydrophobic sponge prepared with the proposed method was acid-base stable (pH = 2–12), self-cleaning, and suitable for high-salinity seawater. The magnetic super-hydrophobic sponge has good oil-water separation ability and can absorb 43 times its own weight of oil. In the meantime, due to the introduction of magnetic materials into lignin, we not only constructed micro-nanostructures to improve the surface super-hydrophobicity, but also made Sponge-P have the function of magnetic recovery, which has a unique advantage in treating oily wastewater.

Reusable, Stable, Efficient and Multifunctional Superhydrophobic and Oleophilic Polyurethane Sponge for Oil-Water Separation Prepared Using Discarded Composite Insulator.

Oil spills and chemical leakages are a serious source of pollution in oceans and rivers, and have attracted worldwide attention. Many scientists are currently engaged in the development of oil-water separation technology. In this study, the umbrella skirt of a discarded silicone rubber insulator was utilized as feedstock, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was employed to immobilize the prepared powder (FXBW) onto a polyurethane (PU) sponge skeleton. Without any modifications using chemical reagents, a novel oil-water separation material, FXBW-PU, was developed, with a water contact angle of 155.3°. The FXBW-PU sponge exhibited an absorption capacity ranging from 11.79 to 26.59 g/g for various oils and organic solvents, while maintaining an excellent selective adsorption performance, even after undergoing ten compression cycles, due to its exceptional chemical and mechanical stability. With the assistance of a vacuum pump, the FXBW-PU sponge was utilized in a continuous separation apparatus, resulting in a separation efficiency exceeding 98.6% for various oils and organic solvents. The separation efficiency of n-hexane remains as high as 99.2% even after 10 consecutive separation cycles. Notably, the FXBW-PU sponge also separated the dichloromethane-in-water emulsions, which achieved the effect of purifying water. In summary, FXBW-PU sponge has great potential in the field of cleaning up oil/organic solvent contamination due to its low preparation cost, environmental friendliness and excellent performance.

Facile fabrication of robust superhydrophobic polyurethane sponge modified with polydopamine- silica nanoparticle for effective oil/water separation

Porous superhydrophobic materials with high mechanical stability have a significant amount of potential for oil-water separation in practice. In this study, a superhydrophobic material with strong hydrophobic coating adhesion was developed using a polyurethane sponge. The interior and exterior surfaces of the porous polyurethane material were coated using a two-step technique. The sponge was treated with poly (dopamine) to modify its skeleton, allowing the second layer to adhere readily. The second layer of silica applied to the surface of the sponge functions as a superhydrophobic layer. The modified sponge's water contact angle was approximately 156.2° ± 5°, compared to 78° ±2° for the original sponge, demonstrating its superhydrophobic nature. The fabricated sponge is capable of separating and absorbing 43.3–51 times of its initial mass from an oil-water mixture, depending on the type of oil used in the test. Fifteen cycles of oil-water separation were followed by chemical cleaning of the hydrophobic sponge. After undergoing these cycles, the hydrophobic nature and absorption capacity of the produced sponge were preserved. Over a broad pH range, the hydrophobicity of the superhydrophobic sponge was studied, and the results indicated that hydrophobicity was substantially maintained even under harsh pH operating conditions. The water contact angle of the sponge was measured to be 145° ± 1° and 140° ± 1°, respectively, after 12 h of immersion in strong acids and bases.

Superhydrophobic polyurethane sponge modified with polydimethylsiloxane/ zinc oxide-rGO for efficient oil or organic solvent/water separation

Oil spills and oily industrial wastewater discharge have been the primary reasons behind numerous environmental problems. Herein, polyurethane sponge (PU) was modified by ZnO decorated rGO and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to enhance the effectiveness to treat oily wastewater. The modified composite sponge showed superhydrophobicity (WCA ∼ 152.4˚), and good oil or organic solvent sorption capacity for n-hexane (20.88 ± 2.1 g/g), dimethylformamide (29.5 ± 2.6 g/g), turpentine oil (30.8 ± 1.9 g/g), diesel (32.4 ± 2.4 g/g), acetone (38.73 ± 1.05 g/g), toluene (41.6 ± 0.3 g/g), gasoline (42.2 ± 2.2 g/g), and cooking oil (42.5 ± 1 g/g) and good recyclability. It also showed good chemical stability (pH ∼ 3 to 9) and temperature resistance (50 ℃ to 200 ℃).

Environment-Friendly superhydrophobic sponge for highly efficient Oil/Water separation and microplastic removal

The pollution of water resources by oils and microplastics is a significant global issue affecting the environment and human health. However, developing a sustainable multifunctional adsorption material to remove multiple pollutants has always been a challenge. Herein, an eco-friendly superhydrophobic polyurethane sponge was developed using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and dehydroabietic acid grafted Al2O3 nanoparticles by dip-coating technique. The green dehydroabietic acid has strong hydrophobicity, which can make the coated sponge have excellent separation of oil/water mixtures or emulsions and has a high oil absorption capacity (20–55 g/g) for various kinds of oils. Continuous oil/water separation was also achieved by gravity-driven or with the assistance of peristaltic pump. After 10 separation cycles, the coated sponge still exhibits excellent separation efficiency (greater than 97%) due to its outstanding mechanical durability and compressive performance. Moreover, various kinds of microplastics could be efficient captured from the aqueous solution at a higher rate using the coated sponge, which is mainly due to the capillary force of the coated sponge and the non-covalent force and conjugates between PDMS and microplastics. This work provides a new strategy to fabricate a sustainable multifunctional sponge for oily wastewater and microplastics and shows the great potential for large-scale practical application.

The preparation of antifouling and superhydrophobic polyurethane sponge by grafting Econea to diisocyanate monomer for durable continuous oil/water separation and cleanup of oil spills

The oil-absorbent sponge is effective in the prevention and cleanup of offshore oil spills. However, biofouling in marine environments will significantly reduce its oil absorption capacity. Herein, a novel type of antifouling and superhydrophobic polyurethane (PU) sponge was successfully prepared via grafting Econea (antifouling agent) to diisocyanate monomer and hydrophobic modification of PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane) and SiO2. The prepared PDMS-SiO2@PU-Econea sponge shows not only super-hydrophobicity with a WCA of 154.5° but also excellent antifouling properties with more than 99% of inhibition to Escherichia coli after immersed in artificial seawater (salinity ≈35‰) for 50 days. It can absorb 133.9 times of trichloromethane than its own weight and still maintain 98.5% of absorption after 50 cycles. In addition, the PDMS-SiO2@PU-Econea sponge exhibits excellent continuous oil–water separation performance. The separation fluxes of n-hexane and dichloromethane are 151.0 and 136.3 L·h−1·g−1, respectively, and the oil–water separation efficiency is up to 99.9%, it can absorb 50 times of crude oil than its own weight in 75 s. Therefore, the antifouling and superhydrophobic PDMS-SiO2@PU-Econea sponge is a promising and applicable oil absorbent sponge for long-term oil/water separation and cleanup of oil spills in marine environment.

The superhydrophobic sponge decorated with Ni-Co double layered oxides with thiol modification for continuous oil/water separation

In this paper, the superhydrophobic polyurethane sponge (SS-PU) was facilely fabricated by etching with Jones reagent to bind the nanoparticles of Ni-Co double layered oxides (LDOs) on the surface, and following modification with n -dodecyl mercaptan (DDT). This method provides a new strategy to fabricate superhydrophobic PU sponge with a water contact angle of 157° for absorbing oil with low cost and in large scale. It exhibits the strong absorption capacity and highly selective characteristic for various kinds of oils which can be recycled by simple squeezing. Besides, the as-prepared sponge can deal with the floating and underwater oils, indicating its application value in handling oil spills and domestic oily wastewater. The good self-cleaning ability shows the potential to clear the pollutants due to the ultra-low adhesion to water. Especially, the most important point is that the superhydrophobic sponge can continuously and effectively separate the oil/water mixture against the condition of turbulent disturbance by using our designed device system, which exhibit its good superhydrophobicity, strong stability. Furthermore, the SS-PU still maintained stable absorption performance after 150 cycle tests without losing capacity obviously, showing excellent durability in long-term operation and significant potential as an efficient absorbent in large-scale dispose of oily water.

Ce-MOF-based superhydrophobic polyurethane sponge reinforced by cellulose for efficient oil-water separation

It is extremely significant to manufacture materials with simple and low-cost synthetic method for the disposal of large-scale oil spills and environmental pollution caused by the illegal discharge of oily wastewater. In this paper, cerium metal-organic framework (Ce-MOF), 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane (PFOTS) and cellulose were used as raw materials to prepare polyurethane hydrophobic sponges (PU) interconnected by chemical bonds to improve physical properties performance. The sponge shows excellent superhydrophobicity with a surface water contact angle (WCA) of 152.53 ± 0.8°. It has high mechanical strength and oil absorption capacity for various oils/organic solvents up to 15.0–44.9 times its weight. It is more imortant that C–F–Ce@PU can separate immiscible oil-water mixtures driven by vacuum pump or gravity. Superhydrophobic/oleophilic C–F–Ce@PU can also be used to separate water-in-oil emulsions. The above characteristics provide a reference for its practical application in oil-water separation.

Photo-Thermal Superhydrophobic Sponge for Highly Efficient Anti-Icing and De-Icing.

Ice accretion always brings much inconvenience in the field of production and life. How to anti-ice or de-ice easily on solid surfaces becomes research focus in the engineering material fields. In this work, a kind of photo-thermal superhydrophobic polyurethane sponge (PSP-SPONGE) was developed by depositing Fe3O4 nanoparticles and polydopamine and simple fluorination treatment to realize anti-icing and de-icing fast under faint sunlight irradiation. Utilizing the thermal insulation of porous PSP-SPONGE, the photo-thermal energy was located at the sunlight irradiation area, which heated PSP-SPONGE surface rapidly under sunlight irradiation in cold surroundings. Water droplets on PSP-SPONGE surface would never freeze under faint 0.3 kW/m2 ("0.3 sun") sunlight illumination in -30 °C damp surroundings, and the ice melts entirely within 18 min under "1 sun" illumination. Furthermore, PSP-SPONGE has excellent self-cleaning and self-healing properties that can cope with the complex and volatile natural environment to guarantee durable anti-icing and de-icing performances. The simulated outdoor snow removal test also proved that snow on PSP-SPONGE surface could melt under "0.5 sun" sunlight illumination in -30 °C damp surroundings. The PSP-SPONGE fabricated with simple preparation and easy access has wide application prospects in anti-icing and de-icing.

Interfacial assembly of a durable superhydrophobic polyurethane sponge with “scalelike” structures for efficient oily emulsion separation

A durable superhydrophobic/superlipophilic polyurethane sponge with “scalelike” pore structures was synthesized by interfacial assembly via in situ anchoring of SiO2 and H-CNTs accompanied by the bonding effect and active sites from polydopamine.

Superhydrophobic polyurethane sponge for efficient water-oil emulsion separation and rapid solar-assisted highly viscous crude oil adsorption and recovery

Rapid and efficient cleaning of oily wastewater and high viscosity crude oil spills is still a global challenge. Conventional three-dimensional porous adsorbents are ineffective for oil-water separation in harsh environment and are restricted to the low fluidity of high viscosity crude oil at room temperature. Increasing temperature can enormously improve the fluidity of viscous crude oil. Herein, the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) /carbon black (CB) -modified polyurethane sponge (PU) were prepared by a simple one-step dip-coating method. PDMS/CB@PU (PCPU) exhibits high adsorption capacity to various oils and organic liquid (28.5–68.7 g/g), strong mechanical properties (500 cycles at 50%), outstanding reusability (100 cycles of adsorption and desorption) and excellent environmental stability due to the special PDMS/CB coating. The maximum surface temperature of PCPU sponge can reach 84.7 ℃ under 1 sunlight irradiation. Therefore, the PCPU sponge can rapidly heat and enhance the fluidity of viscous crude oil, significantly speeding up the viscous oil recovery process with the maximum adsorption capacity of 44.7 g/g. In addition, the PCPU sponge can also combine with the vacuum pump to realize the continuous and rapid repair of viscous oil spills from the seawater surface. In consideration of its simple preparation, cost-effectiveness and high oil absorption ability, this solar-assisted self-heating adsorbent provides a new direction for large-scale cleanup and recycling of viscous crude oil spill on the seawater surface.

Fabrication of robust superhydrophobic magnetic multifunctional coatings and liquid marbles

To obtain durable and multi-function superhydrophobic surfaces, we reported a facial method to prepare a multifunctional suspension (γ-Fe2O3@SiO2@PDMS suspension) named as FSP suspension, in which γ-Fe2O3 was coated by the silica shell and PDMS was used as the outer layer. Superhydrophobic magnetic polyurethane (SMPU) sponge was prepared by immersing the polyurethane (PU) sponge into the FSP suspension, exhibiting the superior ability to absorb oil. In addition, it could also move directionally by the attraction of magnets and absorb the oil along the fixed path. The heated superhydrophobic magnetic stainless steel (H-SMSS) mesh was acquired by spraying FSP suspension onto the stainless steel mesh and then heating at 400°C, which demonstrated superior superhydrophobicity and resistance to abrasion and chemical corrosion. Besides, the H-SMSS mesh displayed excellent flux and efficiency to separate the oil/water mixture. Rolling droplets on FSP particles, the superhydrophobic magnetic liquid marbles (SMLMs) were fabricated, in which liquids with different volumes were encapsulated and transported directionally. Further, it was convenient to inject liquid into the SMLM and withdraw liquid from it. Thus, the prepared FSP suspension has promising applications in constructing large-area, robust, and multifunctional surfaces and microreactors.
