XMM-Newton and Swift observations of supergiant high mass X-ray binaries

Wind-fed supergiant X-ray binaries are precious laboratories not only to study accretion under extreme gravity and magnetic field conditions, but also to probe the still highly debated properties of massive star winds. These include clumps, originating from the inherent instability of line driven winds, and larger structures. In this paper we report on the results of the last (and not yet published) monitoring campaigns that our group has been carrying out since 2007 with both XMM-Newton and the Swift Neil Gehrels observatory. Data collected with the EPIC cameras on board XMM-Newton allow us to carry out a detailed hardness-ratio-resolved spectral analysis that can be used as an efficient way to detect spectral variations associated with the presence of clumps. Long-term observations with the XRT on board Swift, evenly sampling the X-ray emission of supergiant X-ray binaries over many different orbital cycles, are exploited to look for the presence of large-scale structures in the medium surrounding the compact objects. These can be associated either with corotating interaction regions or with accretion and/or photoionization wakes, and with tidal streams. The results reported in this paper represent the outcomes of the concluded observational campaigns we carried out on the supergiant X-ray binaries 4U 1907+09, IGR J16393−4643, IGR J19140+0951, and XTE J1855−026, and on the supergiant fast X-ray transients IGR J17503−2636, IGR J18410−0535, and IGR J11215−5952. All results are discussed in the context of wind-fed supergiant X-ray binaries and ideally serve to optimally shape the next observational campaigns aimed at sources in the same classes. We show in one of the Appendices that IGR J17315−3221, preliminarily classified in the literature as a possible supergiant X-ray binary discovered by INTEGRAL, is the product of a data analysis artifact and should thus be disregarded for future studies.

Detecting the intrinsic X-ray emission from the O-type donor star and the residual accretion in a supergiant fast X-ray transient in its faintest state

We report on the results of an XMM–Newton observation of the supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT) IGR J08408-4503 performed in June 2020. The source is composed of a compact object (likely a neutron star) orbiting around an O8.5Ib-II(f)p star, LM Vel. The X-ray light curve shows a very low level of emission, punctuated by a single, faint flare. We analysed spectra measured during the flare and during quiescence. The quiescent state shows a continuum spectrum that is well deconvolved to three spectral models: two components are from a collisionally ionized plasma (with temperatures of kT1 = 0.24 keV and kT2 = 0.76 keV), together with a power-law model (photon index, Γ, of ∼2.55), dominating above ∼2 keV. The X-ray flux emitted at this lowest level is 3.2 × 10−13 erg cm−2 s−1 (0.5–10 keV, corrected for the interstellar absorption), implying an X-ray luminosity of 1.85 × 1032 erg s−1 (at 2.2 kpc). The two-temperature collisionally ionized plasma is intrinsic to the stellar wind of the donor star, while the power-law can be interpreted as emission due to residual, low-level accretion onto the compact object. The X-ray luminosity contributed by the power-law component only, in the lowest state, is (4.8 ± 1.4)×1031 erg s−1, which is the lowest quiescent luminosity detected from the compact object in an SFXT. Thanks to this very faint X-ray state caught by XMM–Newton, X-ray emission from the wind of the donor star LM Vel could be well-established and studied in detail for the first time, along with a very low level of accretion onto the compact object. The residual accretion rate onto the compact object in IGR J08408-4503 can be interpreted as the Bohm diffusion of (possibly magnetized) plasma entering the neutron star magnetosphere at low Bondi capture rates from the supergiant donor wind at the quasi-spherical, radiation-driven settling accretion stage.

Dust-scattering Halo and Giant Hard X-Ray Flare from the Supergiant Fast X-Ray Transient IGR J16479–4514 Investigated with XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL

Abstract We report results from the analysis of XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL data of IGR J16479−4514. The unpublished XMM-Newton observation, performed in 2012, occurred during the source eclipse. No pointlike X-ray emission was detected from the source; conversely, extended X-ray emission was clearly detected up to a size distance compatible with a dust-scattering halo produced by the source X-ray emission before being eclipsed by its companion donor star. The diffuse emission of the dust-scattering halo could be observed without any contamination from the central point X-ray source, compared to a previous XMM-Newton observation published in 2008. Our comprehensive analysis of the 2012 unpublished spectrum of the diffuse emission, as well as the 2008 reanalyzed spectra extracted from three adjacent time intervals and different extraction regions (optimized for pointlike and extended emission), allowed us to clearly disentangle the scattering halo spectrum from the residual pointlike emission during the 2008 eclipse. Moreover, the pointlike emission detected in 2008 could be separated into two components attributed to the direct emission from the source and scattering in the stellar wind, respectively. From archival unpublished INTEGRAL data, we identified a very strong (∼3 × 10−8 erg cm−2 s−1) and fast (∼25 minute duration) flare that was classified as a giant hard X-ray flare, since the measured peak luminosity is ∼7 × 1037 erg s−1. Giant X-ray flares from supergiant fast X-ray transients are very rare; to date, only one has been reported from a different source. We propose a physical scenario to explain the origin in the case of IGR J16479−4514.

NuSTAR observation of the supergiant fast X-ray transient IGR J11215−5952 during its 2017 outburst

We report on the results of a NuSTAR observation of the supergiant fast X-ray transient pulsar IGR J11215−5952 during the peak of its outburst in June 2017. IGR J11215−5952 is the only SFXT undergoing strictly periodic outbursts (every 165 days). NuSTAR caught several X-ray flares, spanning a dynamic range of 100, and detected X-ray pulsations at 187.0 s, which is consistent with previous measurements. The spectrum from the whole observation is well described by an absorbed power law (with a photon index of 1.4), which is modified, above ∼7 keV, by a cutoff with an e-folding energy of ∼24 keV. A weak emission line is present at 6.4 keV, consistent with Kα emission from cold iron in the supergiant wind. The time-averaged flux is ∼1.5 × 10−10 erg cm−2 s−1 (3−78 keV, corrected for the absorption), translating into an average luminosity of about 9 × 1035 erg s−1 (1–100 keV, assuming a distance of 6.5 kpc). The NuSTAR observation allowed us to perform the most sensitive search for cyclotron resonant scattering features in the hard X-ray spectrum, resulting in no significant detection in any of the different spectral extractions adopted (time-averaged, temporally selected, spin-phase-resolved and intensity-selected spectra). The pulse profile showed an evolution with both the energy (3−12 keV energy range compared with 12−78 keV band) and the X-ray flux: a double-peaked profile was evident at higher fluxes (and in both energy bands), while a single-peaked, sinusoidal profile was present at the lowest intensity state achieved within the NuSTAR observations (in both energy bands). The intensity-selected analysis allowed us to observe an anti-correlation of the pulsed fraction with the X-ray luminosity. The pulse profile evolution can be explained by X-ray photon scattering in the accreting matter above magnetic poles of a neutron star at the quasi-spherical settling accretion stage.

Accretion disc by Roche lobe overflow in the supergiant fast X-ray transient IGR J08408−4503

Supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) are X-ray binary systems with a supergiant companion and likely a neutron star, which show a fast (∼103 s) and high variability with a dynamic range up to 105−6. Given their extreme properties, they are considered among the most valuable laboratories to test accretion models. Recently, the orbital parameters of a member of this class, IGR J08408−4503, were obtained from optical observations. We used this information, together with X-ray observations from previous publications and new results from X-ray and optical data collected by INTEGRAL and presented in this work, to study the accretion mechanisms at work in IGR J08408−4503. We found that the high eccentricity of the compact object orbit and the large size of the donor star imply Roche lobe overflow (RLO) around the periastron. It is also likely that a fraction of the outer layers of the photosphere of the donor star are lost from the Lagrangian point L2 during the periastron passages. On the basis of these findings, we discuss the flaring variability of IGR J08408−4503 assuming the presence of an accretion disc. We point out that IGR J08408−4503 may not be the only SFXT with an accretion disc fueled by RLO. These findings open a new scenario for accretion mechanisms in SFXTs, since most of them have so far been based on the assumption of spherically symmetric accretion.

XMM–Newton andINTEGRALanalysis of the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient IGR J17354−3255

We present the results of combined INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton observations of the supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT) IGR J17354$-$3255. Three XMM-Newton observations of lengths 33.4 ks, 32.5 ks and 21.9 ks were undertaken, the first an initial pointing to identify the correct source in the field of view and the latter two performed around periastron. Simultaneous INTEGRAL observations across $\sim66\%$ of the orbital cycle were analysed but the source was neither detected by IBIS/ISGRI nor by JEM-X. The XMM-Newton light curves display a range of moderately bright X-ray activity but there are no particularly strong flares or outbursts in any of the three observations. We show that the spectral shape measured by XMM-Newton can be fitted by a consistent model throughout the observation, suggesting that the observed flux variations are driven by obscuration from a wind of varying density rather than changes in accretion mode. The simultaneous INTEGRAL data rule out simple extrapolation of the simple powerlaw model beyond the XMM-Newton energy range.

Flaring activity of the SFXT IGR J16418−4532

Supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) are a sub-class of wind-fed High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXB) in which the normal companion is a supergiant. These systems were collected in a sub-class because of short flares (a few hours duration) in which the X-ray luminosity increases by a few orders of magnitude. One of the members of SFXTs is the X-ray 1212 s pulsar IGR J16418−4532, which is characterized by a high quiescent X-ray luminosity and flaring on a short timescale. We show that the degenerate component of the system is either a magnetar which accretes matter from a Keplerian disk of quasi-spherical flow, or a regularly magnetized neutron star which rotates near spin equilibrium and accretes matter from a non-Keplerian magnetic disk.

XMM-Newton and NuSTAR Simultaneous X-Ray Observations of IGR J11215-5952

Abstract We report the results of an XMM-Newton and NuSTAR coordinated observation of the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient (SFXT) IGR J11215–5952, performed on 2016 February 14, during the expected peak of its brief outburst, which repeats every ∼165 days. Timing and spectral analysis were performed simultaneously in the energy band 0.4–78 keV. A spin period of 187.0 (±0.4) s was measured, consistent with previous observations performed in 2007. The X-ray intensity shows a large variability (more than one order of magnitude) on timescales longer than the spin period, with several luminous X-ray flares that repeat every 2–2.5 ks, some of which simultaneously observed by both satellites. The broadband (0.4–78 keV) time-averaged spectrum was well deconvolved with a double-component model (a blackbody plus a power law with a high energy cutoff) together with a weak iron line in emission at 6.4 keV (equivalent width, EW, of 40 ± 10 eV). Alternatively, a partial covering model also resulted in an adequate description of the data. The source time-averaged X-ray luminosity was 1036 erg s−1 (0.1–100 keV; assuming 7 kpc). We discuss the results of these observations in the framework of the different models proposed to explain SFXTs, supporting a quasi-spherical settling accretion regime, although alternative possibilities (e.g., centrifugal barrier) cannot be ruled out.

Multi-wavelength observations of IGR J17544-2619 from quiescence to outburst

In this paper we report on a long multi-wavelength observational campaign of the supergiant fast X-ray transient prototype IGR J17544-2619. A 150 ks-long observation was carried out simultaneously with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR, catching the source in an initial faint X-ray state and then undergoing a bright X-ray outburst lasting about 7 ks. We studied the spectral variability during outburst and quiescence by using a thermal and bulk Comptonization model that is typically adopted to describe the X-ray spectral energy distribution of young pulsars in high mass X-ray binaries. Although the statistics of the collected X-ray data were relatively high we could neither confirm the presence of a cyclotron line in the broad-band spectrum of the source (0.5-40 keV), nor detect any of the previously reported tentative detection of the source spin period. The monitoring carried out with Swift/XRT during the same orbit of the system observed by XMM-Newton and NuSTAR revealed that the source remained in a low emission state for most of the time, in agreement with the known property of all supergiant fast X-ray transients being significantly sub-luminous compared to other supergiant X-ray binaries. Optical and infrared observations were carried out for a total of a few thousands of seconds during the quiescence state of the source detected by XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. The measured optical and infrared magnitudes were slightly lower than previous values reported in the literature, but compatible with the known micro-variability of supergiant stars. UV observations obtained with the UVOT telescope on-board Swift did not reveal significant changes in the magnitude of the source in this energy domain compared to previously reported values.

THE XMM-NEWTON AND INTEGRAL OBSERVATIONS OF THE SUPERGIANT FAST X-RAY TRANSIENT IGR J16328-4726∗ †

ABSTRACT The accretion mechanism producing the short flares observed from the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXT) is still highly debated and forms a major part in our attempts to place these X-ray binaries in the wider context of the High Mass X-ray Binaries. We report on a 216 ks INTEGRAL observation of the SFXT IGR J16328-4726 (2014 August 24–27) simultaneous with two fixed-time observations with XMM-Newton (33 and 20 ks) performed around the putative periastron passage, in order to investigate the accretion regime and the wind properties during this orbital phase. During these observations, the source has shown luminosity variations, from ∼ 4 × 10 34 to ∼ 10 36 erg s − 1 , linked to spectral properties changes. The soft X-ray continuum is well modeled by a power law with a photon index varying from ∼1.2 up to ∼1.7 and with high values of the column density in the range of ∼ 2 – 4 × 10 23 cm − 2 . We report on the presence of iron lines at ∼6.8–7.1 keV, suggesting that the X-ray flux is produced by the accretion of matter from the companion wind characterized by density and temperature inhomogeneities.

The eccentric short-period orbit of the supergiant fast X-ray transient HD 74194 (=LM Vel)

Aims. We present the first orbital solution for the O-type supergiant star HD 74194, which is the optical counterpart of the supergiant fast X-ray transient IGR J08408-4503. Methods. We measured the radial velocities in the optical spectrum of HD 74194, and we determined the orbital solution for the first time. We also analysed the complex H{\alpha} profile. Results. HD 74194 is a binary system composed of an O-type supergiant and a compact object in a short-period ($P=9.5436\pm0.0002$ d) and high-eccentricity ($e=0.63\pm0.03$) orbit. The equivalent width of the H{\alpha} line is not modulated entirely with the orbital period, but seems to vary in a superorbital period ($P=285\pm10$ d) nearly 30 times longer than the orbital one.

INTEGRAL discovery of unusually long broad-band X-ray activity from the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient IGR J18483−0311

We report on a broad-band X-ray study (0.5-250 keV) of the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient IGR J18483-0311 using archival INTEGRAL data and a new targeted XMM-Newton observation. Our INTEGRAL investigation discovered for the first time an unusually long X-ray activity (3-60 keV) which continuously lasted for at least 11 days, i.e. a significant fraction (about 60%) of the entire orbital period, and spanned orbital phases corresponding to both periastron and apastron passages. This prolongated X-ray activity is at odds with the much shorter durations marking outbursts from classical SFXTs especially above 20 keV, as such it represents a departure from their nominal behavior and it adds a further extreme characteristic to the already extreme SFXT IGR J18483-0311. Our IBIS/ISGRI high energy investigation (100-250 keV) of archival outbursts activity from the source showed that the recently reported hint of a possible hard X-ray tail is not real and it is likely due to noisy background. The new XMM-Newton targeted observation did not detect any sign of strong X-ray outburst activity from the source despite being performed close to its periastron passage, on the contrary IGR J18483-0311 was caught during the common intermediate X-ray state with a low luminosity value of 3x10^33 erg s^-1 (0.5-10 keV). We discuss all the reported results in the framework of both spherically symmetric clumpy wind scenario and quasi-spherical settling accretion model.

Giant outburst from the supergiant fast X-ray transient IGR J17544−2619: accretion from a transient disc?

Supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) are high mass X-ray binaries associated with OB supergiant companions and characterised by an X-ray flaring behaviour whose dynamical range reaches 5 orders of magnitude on timescales of a few hundred to thousands of seconds. Current investigations concentrate on finding possible mechanisms to inhibit accretion in SFXTs and explain their unusually low average X-ray luminosity. We present the Swift observations of an exceptionally bright outburst displayed by the SFXT IGR J17544-2619 on 2014 October 10 when the source achieved a peak luminosity of $3\times10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. This extends the total source dynamic range to $\gtrsim$10$^6$, the largest (by a factor of 10) recorded so far from an SFXT. Tentative evidence for pulsations at a period of 11.6 s is also reported. We show that these observations challenge, for the first time, the maximum theoretical luminosity achievable by an SFXT and propose that this giant outburst was due to the formation of a transient accretion disc around the compact object.

NuSTAR detection of a cyclotron line in the supergiant fast X-ray transient IGR J17544−2619

We present NuSTAR spectral and timing studies of the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient (SFXT) IGR J17544-2619. The spectrum is well-described by a ~1 keV blackbody and a hard continuum component, as expected from an accreting X-ray pulsar. We detect a cyclotron line at 17 keV, confirming that the compact object in IGR J17544-2619 is indeed a neutron star. This is the first measurement of the magnetic field in a SFXT. The inferred magnetic field strength, B = (1.45 +/- 0.03) * 10^12 G * (1+z) is typical of neutron stars in X-ray binaries, and rules out a magnetar nature for the compact object. We do not find any significant pulsations in the source on time scales of 1-2000 s.

Spectral and temporal properties of the supergiant fast X-ray transient IGR J18483–0311 observed by INTEGRAL

IGR J18483-0311 is a supergiant fast X-ray transient whose compact object is located in a wide (18.5 d) and eccentric (e~0.4) orbit, which shows sporadic outbursts that reach X-ray luminosities of ~1e36 erg/s. We investigated the timing properties of IGR J18483-0311 and studied the spectra during bright outbursts by fitting physical models based on thermal and bulk Comptonization processes for accreting compact objects. We analysed archival INTEGRAL data collected in the period 2003-2010, focusing on the observations with IGR J18483-0311 in outburst. We searched for pulsations in the INTEGRAL light curves of each outburst. We took advantage of the broadband observing capability of INTEGRAL for the spectral analysis. We observed 15 outbursts, seven of which we report here for the first time. This data analysis almost doubles the statistics of flares of this binary system detected by INTEGRAL. A refined timing analysis did not reveal a significant periodicity in the INTEGRAL observation where a ~21s pulsation was previously detected. Neither did we find evidence for pulsations in the X-ray light curve of an archival XMM-Newton observation of IGR J18483-0311. In the light of these results the nature of the compact object in IGR J18483-0311 is unclear. The broadband X-ray spectrum of IGR J18483-0311 in outburst is well fitted by a thermal and bulk Comptonization model of blackbody seed photons by the infalling material in the accretion column of a neutron star. We also obtained a new measurement of the orbital period using the Swift/BAT light curve.

Swift/XRT orbital monitoring of the candidate supergiant fast X-ray transient IGR J17354–3255

We report on the Swift/X-ray Telescope (XRT) monitoring of the field of view around the candidate supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT) IGR J17354-3255, which is positionally associated with the AGILE/GRID gamma-ray transient AGL J1734-3310. Our observations, which cover 11 days for a total on-source exposure of about 24 ks, span 1.2 orbital periods (P_orb=8.4474 d) and are the first sensitive monitoring of this source in the soft X-rays. These new data allow us to exploit the timing variability properties of the sources in the field to unambiguously identify the soft X-ray counterpart of IGR J17354-3255. The soft X-ray light curve shows a moderate orbital modulation and a dip. We investigated the nature of the dip by comparing the X-ray light curve with the prediction of the Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion theory, assuming both spherical and nonspherical symmetry of the outflow from the donor star. We found that the dip cannot be explained with the X-ray orbital modulation. We propose that an eclipse or the onset of a gated mechanism is the most likely explanation for the observed light curve.

X-ray, optical, and infrared investigation of the candidate supergiant fast X-ray transient IGR J18462 − 0223

We report on a broad-band X-ray study (0.5-60 keV) of the poorly known candidate Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient (SFXT) IGR J18462-0223, and on optical and near-infrared (NIR) followup observations of field objects. The out-of-outburst X-ray state has been investigated for the first time with archival INTEGRAL/IBIS, ASCA, Chandra and Swift/XRT observations. This allowed us to place stringent 3 sigma upper limits on the soft (0.5-10 keV) and hard (18-60 keV) X-ray emission of 2.9x10^-13 erg cm^-2 s^-1 and 8x10^-12 erg cm^-2 s^-1, respectively; the source was also detected during an intermediate soft X-ray state with flux equal to 1.6x10^-11 erg cm^-2 s^-1 (0.5-10 keV). In addition, we report on the INTEGRAL/IBIS discovery of three fast hard X-ray flares (18-60 keV) having a duration in the range 1-12 hours: the flaring behavior was also investigated in soft X-rays (3-10 keV) with archival INTEGRAL/JEM-X observations. The duty cycle (1.2%) and the dynamic ranges (> 1,380 and > 190 in the energy bands 0.5-10 keV and 18-60 keV, respectively) were measured for the first time. Archival UKIDSS JHK NIR data, together with our deep R-band imaging of the field, unveiled a single, very red object inside the intersection of the Swift/XRT and XMM-Newton error circles: this source has optical/NIR photometric properties compatible with a very heavily absorbed blue supergiant located at about 11 kpc, thus being a strong candidate counterpart for IGR J18462-0223. NIR spectroscopy is advised to confirm the association. Finally, a hint of a possible orbital period was found at about 2.13 days. If confirmed by further studies, this would make IGR J18462-0223 the SFXT with the shortest orbital period among the currently known systems.

IGR J17354–3255 as bench test for investigation of γ-ray emission from Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients

Among the different types of sources shining in the high energy sky, gamma-ray binaries are rapidly becoming the subject of major interest. In fact, in the last few years a number of High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) have been firmly detected from MeV to TeV energies, providing secure evidences that particles can be efficiently accelerated up to very high energies in such galactic systems. Similarly to this general and emerging class of gamma-ray binaries, in principle Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXTs) have all the ”ingredients” to be transient high energy emitters. In this context, the SFXT IGR J17354–3255 is a good bench test and we present intriguing hints likely suggesting that it is a transient gamma-ray source flaring on short timescales. If fully confirmed by further studies, the implications stemming are huge, both theoretically and observationally, and would add a further extreme characteristic to the already extreme class of SFXTs.

INTEGRAL and XMM–Newton observations of IGR J16418−4532: evidence of accretion regime transitions in a supergiant fast X-ray transient

We report on combined INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton observations of the supergiant fast X-ray transient IGR J16418-4532. The observations targeted the X-ray eclipse region of IGR J16418-4532s orbit with continuous INTEGRAL observations across ~25% of orbital phase and two quasi-simultaneous XMM-Newton observations of length 20ks and 14ks, occurring during and just after the eclipse respectively. An enhanced INTEGRAL emission history is provided with 19 previously unreported outbursts identified in the archival 18-60 keV data set. The XMM-Newton eclipse observation showed prominent Fe-emission and a flux of 2.8*10^-13 erg cm^-2 s^-1 (0.5 - 10 keV). Through the comparison of the detected eclipse and post eclipse flux, the supergiant mass loss rate through the stellar wind was determined as \dot{M}_{w} = 2.3-3.8*10^-7 M_{\odot} yr^-1. The post eclipse XMM-Newton observation showed a dynamic flux evolution with signatures of the X-ray pulsation, a period of flaring activity, structured nH variations and the first ever detection of an X-ray intensity dip, or 'off-state', in a pulsating supergiant fast X-ray transient. Consideration is given to the origin of the X-ray dip and we conclude that the most applicable of the current theories of X-ray dip generation is that of a transition between Compton cooling dominated and radiative cooling dominated subsonic accretion regimes within the 'quasi-spherical' model of wind accretion. Under this interpretation, which requires additional confirmation, the neutron star in IGR J16418-4532 possesses a magnetic field of ~10^14 G, providing tentative observational evidence of a highly magnetised neutron star in a supergiant fast X-ray transient for the first time. The implications of these results on the nature of IGR J16418-4532 itself and the wider SFXT class are discussed.
