A sustainable solution: Conversion of distillers' grains waste into high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials for energy storage applications

The development of cost-effective biomass-derived carbon with good electrochemical properties is crucial for advancing energy storage devices sustainably. One feasible approach to producing supercapacitor electrode materials is the conversion of heteroatom-rich biomass waste into heteroatom self-doped hierarchical porous carbons with favorable electrochemical properties. In this study, distillers' grains with abundant crude fiber and protein were utilized as precursors to prepare N, S self-doped hierarchical porous carbon, which presents a high specific surface area of 3642.87 m2 g−1. The N, S doping could improve the interfacial wettability of electrode materials and enhance the pseudocapacitive effect of the materials. In three-electrode system, the carbon delivered a high capacitance of 347 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. Symmetrical capacitors assembled with PVA/KOH gel electrolytes delivered an ultrahigh energy density of 11.29 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 250 W kg−1. This strategy provides a practical, low-cost, and renewable design approach of carbon electrode for high-performance supercapacitors.

Sputter Deposited Crystalline MoO2 Films as a High-Capacity and Stable Electrode Material for Supercapacitors: Mechanistic/Electrochemical Insights

In this work, we have optimized and fabricated pristine molybdenum dioxide (MoO2) electrodes over the Silicon (Si) substrate and examined the impact of various ion-loaded aqueous electrolytes on their electrochemical behavior. The sputtered electrodes exhibited a high crystalline structure and a very low resistivity. These highly conductive electrodes were tested in three different aqueous electrolytes (acidic, neutral, and alkaline) to establish a relation between the electrode and the nature of the electrolyte to achieve optimal electrochemical performance and cyclability. The electrochemical kinetics showed that the charge storage mechanism was unique for all the electrolytes. The capacitive current was dominant in the neutral electrolyte, whereas it was diffusive dominant in alkaline and 70% capacitive in the acidic electrolyte. Our findings indicated that the MoO2@Si electrode exhibited superior electrochemical activity in an acidic electrolyte. The electrode showed a voltage window of 0.6 V with an areal capacity of 24 mF/cm2 at 0.1 V/s scan rate. Moreover, the electrode also demonstrated excellent cyclability and capacitance retention (∼145%) till 5000 cycles. These results highlighted that the binder-free MoO2@Si electrode showed outstanding electrochemical activity and stability, which makes it suitable for sulfuric acid electrolyte-based energy storage systems.

Synergistic effect of co-sputtered tungsten-titanium nitride as electrode material for efficient hybrid supercapacitors

The dawn of bimetallic transition metal nitrides has attracted considerable interest as battery grade electrode material for potential energy storage applications. In addition, it is essential to investigate binder-free processes to improve the performance of the fabricated electrodes. In this study, binder-free tungsten‑titanium nitrides (W-TiN) are deposited through RF/DC magnetron co-sputtering onto the conducting nickel foam (NF). SEM, EDX and X-ray diffraction are exploited to investigate surface morphology, elemental composition, and structural properties of sputtered materials. The W-TiN electrodes are characterized through electrochemical investigation in half-cell configuration. The tested W-TiN electrode is further utilized with activated carbon (AC) electrode to develop hybrid supercapacitor device W-TiN//AC. The hybrid device revealed a maximum energy density (Es) of 88.8 Wh/kg and power density (Ps) 1700 W /kg. To further understand the mechanism of hybrid devices, the capacitive and diffusive contributions are computed using linear and quadradic models. This study provides a new direction to integrate co-sputtered binder-free electrode materials and devices for large scale production of advanced hybrid energy storage devices.

Characterization of manufacturing material and carbon nanohybrid for renewable energy and storage systems

Scientists are exploring advanced energy alternatives to compete with rising fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions due to population growth and technological advancements. Supercapacitors are highly efficient systems for storing energy due to their specific capacitance and power density, meeting modern energy storage demands. Perovskite and carbon-based materials have emerged as the most effective materials in this respect. In this work, SrSnO3/rGO nanohybrid is chosen as the supercapacitor electrode material for the very first time and a range of characterization techniques are employed to ascertain the structural and textural characteristics of the composite. The physicochemical properties of the SrSnO3 included rGO are shown to have a greater surface area, excellent electrical conductivity and a lower resistance. It is demonstrated that the rGO improved quicker ion diffusion channels for the increased redox performance in the SrSnO3/rGO nanohybrid. Additionally at 1 A/g, the SrSnO3/rGO nanohybrid has an elevated specific capacitance of 1385 F/g along with energy and power density of 66 Wh/kg and 293 W/kg, respectively in a three-electrode system. During the two electrode observations, the revealed Cs of SrSnO3/rGO nanohybrid was 122 F/g at 1 A/g with 66 Wh/kg and 293 W/kg of energy density and power density, respectively. The SrSnO3/rGO nanohybrid has exceptional functionality, as demonstrated by its 65 h stability examination via chronoamperometry and a modest drop in its CV polarization curve area after the 5000th cycle of the CV stability analysis. These evaluated results point to the nanohybrid's promising future.

Interfacial Interaction in MeOx/MWNTs (Me–Cu, Ni) Nanostructures as Efficient Electrode Materials for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Due to their unique physical and chemical properties, complex nanostructures based on carbon nanotubes and transition metal oxides are considered promising electrode materials for the fabrication of high-performance supercapacitors with a fast charge rate, high power density, and long cycle life. The crucial role in determining their efficiency is played by the properties of the interface in such nanostructures, among them, the type of chemical bonds between their components. The complementary theoretical and experimental methods, including dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D3) within GGA-PBE approximation, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, X-ray photoelectron, and X-ray absorption spectroscopies, were applied in the present work for the comprehensive investigation of surface morphology, structure, and electronic properties in CuOx/MWCNTs and NiOx/MWCNTs. As a result, the type of interfacial interaction and its correlation with electrochemical characteristics were determined. It was found that the presence of both Ni–O–C and Ni–C bonds can increase the contact between NiO and MWCNTs, and, through this, promote electron transfer between NiO and MWCNTs. For NiOx/MWCNTs, better electrochemical characteristics were observed than for CuOx/MWCNTs, in which the interfacial interaction is determined only by bonding through Cu–O–C bonds. The electrochemical properties of CuOx/MWCNTs and NiOx/MWCNTs were studied to demonstrate the effect of interfacial interaction on their efficiency as electrode materials for supercapacitor applications.

Ultrafast Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Porous NiCo Layered Double Hydroxide Nanospheres for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Currently, new clean energy storage technology must be effective, affordable, and ecologically friendly so as to meet the diverse and sustainable needs of the energy supply. In this work, NiCo-LDH containing intercalated EG was successfully prepared within 210 s using an ultrafast microwave radiation technique. Subsequently, a series of characterization and systematic electrochemical tests were conducted to analyze the composition, structure, and energy storage mechanism of the NiCo-LDH material. The Ni:Co ratio of 5:5 results in the highest capacitance value of 2156 F/g at 1 A/g and an outstanding rate performance of 86.8% capacity retention rate at 10 A/g. The results demonstrated that the unique porous structure of NiCo-LDH and large layer spacing were conducive to more electrochemical reactions. Additionally, an electrochemical test was carried out on the NiCo-LDH as a hybrid supercapacitor electrode material, with NiCo-LDH-5:5 serving as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode, the asymmetric supercapacitor can achieve a maximum energy density of 82.5 Wh kg−1 and power density of 8000 W kg−1. The NiCo-LDH-5:5//AC hybrid supercapacitors own 81.5% cycle stability and 100% coulombic efficiency after 6000 cycles at 10 A/g.

Experimental and theoretical studies on cobalt ruthenium phosphate structure optimization towards supercapacitor application

Recent studies have given indications that nanoarchitectured binary transition metal phosphates can act as potential supercapacitor (SC) electrode materials due to their exceptional energy storage capacity and remarkable electrochemical stability. However, the highly amorphous nature or broad X-ray diffraction peaks of metal phosphates put a limit on the structural optimization of these materials. We demonstrate a combined experimental and theoretical study leading to an optimized cobalt-ruthenium phosphate (CRP) structure for high-performance SC application. The material structure was optimized by detailed density functional theory (DFT) calculations, including the Bader charge analysis, DOS, and PDOS, revealed the lattice and volume expansion, reduced band gap, and improved conductivity of the cobalt phosphate lattice by including ruthenium in the cobalt phosphate. These predictions are verified with experimental band gap and high-resolution transmission electron microscope plane image indexing. Further, the CRP was developed by potentiostatic deposition onto the carbon cloth substrate. The flexible CRP electrode exhibited a high specific capacitance of 1258 F g−1 (943.5C g−1) in the aqueous 2 M KOH electrolyte. The asymmetric SC device (CRP//activated carbon) has exhibited an excellent specific energy of ∼59 Wh kg−1 at a specific power of ∼751 W kg−1.

Electrochemical deposition of NiO/NiCo2O4 nanostructures for high-performance supercapacitors

NiO is widely used in supercapacitors because of its low toxicity, low price and environmental friendliness. In this study, NiO/NiCo2O4 composites were prepared on nickel foam substrates using a simple electrochemical deposition technique. By adjusting the deposition time in the electrochemical parameters, the optimum conditions for the deposition process can be fine-tuned. Characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the synthesis of NiO/NiCo2O4 composites. The electrochemical properties of the composite electrode NiO/NiCo2O4/NF were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrostatic charge-discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The specific capacitance (Cs) of the prepared composite electrode NiO/NiCo2O4/NF electrode was 717.8 mF/cm2 at 2 mA/cm2 with a capacitance retention of 74.8 %. In addition, Aqueous symmetric supercapacitors (SSCs) and all-solid symmetric supercapacitors were assembled based on the composite NiO/NiCo2O4/NF electrode, respectively. The aqueous SSCs have a power density of 880 μW/cm2 and an energy density of 123.0 μWh/cm2, the all-solid symmetric supercapacitors have a power density of 960 μW/cm2 and an energy density of 24.27 μWh/cm2. The series connection of two identical capacitors can light up light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This research presents a promising technique for producing Ni-based electrode material for supercapacitors.

Synergistic Enhancement of Supercapacitors with Cobalt–Copper Bimetal–Organic Framework

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), as high‐potential electrode materials for applications in supercapacitors, have received significant attention recently. Unfortunately, MOF materials still suffer from unsatisfactory specific capacitances due to poor conductivity and limited redox active sites. Herein, a novel cobalt–copper‐based bimetal–organic framework (CoCu‐MOF) is synthesized by a bottom‐up synthesis strategy, the material properties systematically characterized, and finally investigated as a supercapacitor electrode material. The synthesized CoCu‐MOF presents a high specific surface area of 62.4 m2 g−1, and 83% of the copper ions attains the +1 oxidation state contributing to the formation of additional redox active sites and leading to the formation of dual‐redox sites. The CoCu‐MOF displays an excellent specific capacitance of 618 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1, which is more than twice that of Co‐MOF and four times that of Cu‐MOF. The CoCu‐MOF retains 75% of its original capacitance after 3000 charge–discharge cycles at the current density of 1 A g−1. Overall, this work demonstrates how the bimetallic synergistic strategy can effectively enhance the electrochemical properties of MOFs by providing a higher specific surface area and by the introduction of dual redox sites.

An insight Into Surface and Diffusion Characteristics of UiO‐66@ZIF‐8 Core–Shell MOF for Asymmetric Supercapacitors with Unprecedented Energy Density

AbstractIn this study, nanosized zeolitic imidazolate framework‐8 (ZIF‐8) crystal has been produced on the universitetet i oslo‐66 (UiO‐66) metal–organic framework (MOF) to make core–shell structure using a layer‐by‐layer deposition method. In comparison to the pristine UiO‐66 and ZIF‐8, the core–shell MOF exhibits superior performance in terms of specific capacitance. This enhanced performance is attributed to its remarkable ability to facilitate the rapid diffusion of electrolyte ions through nanosized ZIF‐8 and enhance the electron transfer process involving the inner and outer metal ions within the UiO‐66@ZIF‐8 structure. Remarkably, the core–shell structure achieves an impressive specific capacitance of 588.8 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1 using 1 m sulfuric acid (H2SO4) aqueous electrolyte. Additionally, the UiO‐66@ZIF‐8 core–shell material is demonstrated as a positive electrode, coupled with activated carbon (AC) derived from waste tissue paper serving as the negative electrode, in the fabrication of an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device. At a power density of 400 W kg−1, this assembled asymmetric device delivers a notably high energy density of 53 Wh kg−1 along with a cyclic stability of 94.8% after 10 000 cycles. This study substantiates the superior performance of the UiO‐66@ZIF‐8 core–shell MOF structure as a highly effective supercapacitor electrode material, surpassing the performance of its pristine MOF counterparts.

Mesoporous Mn-substituted MnxZn1-xCo2O4 ternary spinel microspheres with enhanced electrochemical performance for supercapacitor applications.

Extensive investigations have been carried out on spinel mixed transition metal oxide-based materials for high-performance electrochemical energy storage applications. In this study, mesoporous Mn-substituted MnxZn1-xCo2O4 (ZMC) ternary oxide microspheres (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1) were fabricated as electrode materials for supercapacitors through a facile coprecipitation method. Electron microscopy analysis revealed the formation of microspheres comprising interconnected aggregates of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the substitution of Mn into ZnCo2O4 significantly improved the surface area of the synthesized samples. The electrochemical test results demonstrate that the ZMC3 oxide microspheres with an optimal Mn substitution exhibited enhanced performance, displaying the largest specific capacitance of 589.9Fg-1 at 1Ag-1. Additionally, the ZMC3 electrode maintained a capacitance retention of 92.1% after 1000 cycles and exhibited a significant rate capability at a current density of 10Ag-1. This improved performance can be ascribed to the synergistic effects of multiple metals resulting from Mn substitution, along with an increase in the surface area, which tailors the redox behavior of ZnCo2O4 (ZC) and facilitates charge transfer. These findings indicate that the incorporation of Mn into mixed transition metal oxides holds promise as an effective strategy for designing high-performance electrodes for energy storage applications.

Pectin Supercapacitor Applications

In today’s energy wars, the decrease in fossil fuels and the increase in pollution reuses the question of energy and clean merit production. For this reason, supercapacitor electrodes are available for supercapacitor applications, which are synthesized using biodegradable materials or hybrids by taking nature as an example. In synthesizing our example electrode pectin, we will examine the methods of obtaining pectin, which is abundant in nature and can be used effectively in terms of its physicochemical properties, by purification or synthesis methods. Supercapacitors are essential in storing energy with their fast charge/discharge properties. This includes using pectin and other materials in energy storage systems. We will present other materials preferred in supercapacitor applications and modified compilations of these applications. In conclusion; a porous material such as pectin has a large surface area. Materials with large surface areas are very suitable electrodes for charge storage in supercapacitor applications. If some problems in pectin production and electrical conductivity can be resolved, it will be a very suitable natural electrode material for supercapacitors.

Nickel-copper-cobalt mixed oxide electrode material for high performance asymmetric supercapacitor

Nickel copper cobalt oxide (NiCuCoO) ternary metal oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by employing the hydrothermal method. NiCuCoO electrode demonstrates a specified capacity of 596 C g−1 at 1 A g−1, high capacitance retaining of 99% even if 1000 sequences at the density of current 10 A g−1, and significant extended cyclic strength over 1000 sequences. The gathered asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) tool via NiCuCoO as the cathode and activated carbon as anode materials achieve a specified capacity of 168 C g−1 at a current density of 1 Ag−1, an excellent capacity retaining of 95% even later than 5000 sequences at a density of current 10 A g−1. The fabricated device exhibits a high density of energy and power is 96 Wh kg−1 and 841 W kg−1. The prepared material confirms an excellent capacitance routine, so this work represents for a next-generation energy storage device.

Highly conductive titanium nitride core sterically reinforced nickel-vanadium layered double hydroxides for supercapacitors

Nickel vanadium layered double hydroxide (NiV-LDH) is a highly promising electrode material for supercapacitors, but its poor electrochemical durability and conductivity limit its capacitance performance as a high-performance supercapacitor electrode. In contrast, titanium nitride (TiN) stands out for its outstanding electrochemical durability and superior conductivity. In this work, a composite material (TiN@NiV-LDH) with outstanding electrochemical performance was prepared by a simple hydrothermal method, where nickel vanadium layered double hydroxide nanosheets were vertically grown in a staggered manner on the surface of amorphous titanium nitride nanoparticles. The results demonstrate that at a current density of 2 A g−1, the capacitance of TiN@NiV-LDH reaches 712.4 F g−1. In addition, the assembled TiN@NiV-LDH//AC asymmetric supercapacitor exhibits a high energy density of 136.5 Wh kg−1 at a high power density of 1549.9 W kg−1, and after 10,000 cycles at a high current density of 20 A g−1, it retains 80.2 % excellent cyclic stability. This work, based on nickel vanadium layered double hydroxide and utilizing titanium nitride modification, aims to enhance the long-term stability of nickel vanadium layered double hydroxide while preserving its advantageous properties, providing a promising strategy for designing efficient supercapacitor electrodes.

Biodegradable Activated Carbon Material Derived from Eggplant Waste for Enhanced Supercapacitor Performance

Agricultural-waste-derived porous carbon and vegetable-waste-derived porous carbon materials have been extensively studied as electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors due to their abundance and ability to be consistently reproduced. This paper focuses on utilizing eggplant waste, the primary by-product, as a precursor for producing porous carbon through the easy carbonization and activation process. The resultant porous carbon is then employed as an electrode material for supercapacitors. The Eggplant waste-derived porous carbon exhibits a notable surface area of 1095.4 m2 g-1. This carbon material possesses the benefits of being cost-effective and environmentally friendly while exhibiting superior electrochemical performance in comparison to materials obtained from agricultural waste. The carbon electrode made from eggplant demonstrates an energy density of 9.19 Wh Kg-1 and a power density of 2880 W Kg-1, indicating its outstanding energy storage capacity.

Fabrication of Ternary Titanium Dioxide/Polypyrrole/Phosphorene Nanocomposite for Supercapacitor Electrode Applications.

In this paper, we report a titanium dioxide/polypyrrole/phosphorene (TiO2/PPy/phosphorene) nanocomposite as an active material for supercapacitor electrodes. Black phosphorus (BP) was fabricated by ball milling to induce a phase transition from red phosphorus, and urea-functionalized phosphorene (urea-FP) was obtained by urea-assisted ball milling of BP, followed by sonication. TiO2/PPy/phosphorene nanocomposites can be prepared via chemical oxidative polymerization, which has the advantage of mass production for a one-pot synthesis. The specific capacitance of the ternary nanocomposite was 502.6 F g-1, which was higher than those of the phosphorene/PPy (286.25 F g-1) and TiO2/PPy (150 F g-1) nanocomposites. The PPy fully wrapped around the urea-FP substrate provides an electron transport pathway, resulting in the enhanced electrical conductivity of phosphorene. Furthermore, the assistance of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles enhanced the structural stability and also improved the specific capacitance of the phosphorene. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the potential of phosphorene hybridized with conducting polymers and metal oxides for practical supercapacitor applications.

Highly stable TiO2/g-C3N4 composite electrodes for quasi-solid-state supercapacitor applications

Supercapacitor research focuses on cheap, long-lasting electrode materials. As a semiconductor, titanium dioxide (TiO2) is cheap and chemically stable, making it a promising electrode material for supercapacitors. The goal is to improve carbon-based composites by hybridizing conductive materials. The graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a stable and common allotrope of C3N4. Its optical, electrical, and structural properties make it a good hybrid system for supercapacitors. With a simple, affordable, and successful thermal decomposition method, we synthesized a TiO2/g-C3N4 composite material. Supercapacitors have 20.6 F g−1 specific capacitance, 63 Wh kg−1 energy density, and 92 % Coulombic efficiency. The TiO2/g-C3N4 composite showed highly stable electrochemical performance even after 10,000 charge–discharge cycles.

A rigid free-standing supercapacitor electrode material made from fat coal-based activated carbon foam

A free-standing electrode material is a competitive candidate for supercapacitor due to its excellent capacity and volumetric energy density. Currently, most of the studies are focused on the preparations and performances of flexible free-standing electrode materials, whereas few on the development of rigid free-standing electrode materials. Herein, a vitrinite concentrate of fat coal is used as a raw material and carbon black as an addition agent to prepare a carbon foam by way of high-pressure pyrolysis. The prepared carbon foam is activated by KOH solution to further achieve an activated carbon foam by which we have fabricated a rigid free-standing electrode material. The assembled symmetric device with the rigid free-standing electrode material demonstrates an extremely high areal specific capacitance of 2304.41 mF cm−2 at 4 mA cm−2, an outstanding cycling stability of 100 % after 40 000 cycles, and an excellent volume energy density of 10.23 mWh cm−3 at 31.78 mW cm−3. These fascinating electrochemical performances of the electrode material are attributed to unique 3D interconnected porous structure of the activated carbon foam. The micron-sized 3D interconnected pores facilitate the transport of electrolyte ions within the electrodes. Meanwhile, micropores on the 3D interconnected pore wall provide abundant active sites for electrolyte ions.

Long cycle life achieved in polyaniline/SP based self-healing supercapacitor

Polyaniline (PANI) has emerged as a promising electrode material for supercapacitors due to its low cost and high specific capacitance. However, during the charge and discharge process, PANI undergoes volume changes, leading to structural damage at the molecular level. This results in material pulverization, causing a loss of electronic contact with the electrode and, consequently, a decrease in capacitance. In this study, we employed ultrasonication-assisted growth of PANI on super-P (PANI/SP-US) to enhance the structural stability. At 1 A g−1, a high specific capacitance of 639 F g−1 was achieved. After 5000 charge-discharge cycles at 2 A g−1, the material retained 75.9% of its capacitance. More importantly, we further developed an effective strategy to incorporate a self-healing polymer (SHP) to fabricate a self-healing electrode. Due to the self-healing ability, the pulverized PANI/SP-US was able to be reconnected and restore electronic contact with the electrode substrate, thereby regaining specific capacitance and achieving excellent cycle life. The sphere-like shape of PANI/SP-US is also of benefit to the self-healing process. Symmetric and asymmetric self-healing devices based on PANI/SP-US and the self-healing polymer exhibited outstanding cyclic stability, retaining 107.9% and 108% of their capacitance, respectively, after 10,000 cycles at 2 A g−1. The self-healing device also exhibits good flexibility under bending, folding deformations. In addition, the device also shows good capacitance retention as the temperature shifted from 50°C to 0°C. This work underscores the significance of microstructure self-repair in enhancing cyclic stability and extends the application of self-healing devices to flexible and variable-temperature conditions.
