Depressive Symptoms and Mental Health of Military Social Service Personnel

Purpose: This study aims to find the mental health characteristics and factors affecting depressive symptoms in military social service personnel.Methods: This descriptive investigation retrospective cohort study analyzed secondary data of social service personnel at I City for five years from April 2016 to May 2020. The Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale, the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test-K, the Paranoia Scale, and the Reynolds Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire were used to examine the mental health of social service personnel.Results: Compared to the military social service personnel with no depression, depressed social service personnel were more paranoid (t=7.13, <i>p</i><.001), and had more suicidal ideas (t=7.44, <i>p</i><.001). Depressive symptoms had a significant positive correlation with alcohol use disorder scores (r=.262, <i>p</i><.001), paranoid ideas (r=.594, <i>p</i><.01), and suicidal ideas (r=.594, <i>p</i><.01). Alcohol use disorder scores (β=.16, t=2.86, <i>p</i>=.005), paranoid scores (β=.30, t=4.34, <i>p</i><.001), and suicidal ideas (β=.42, t=5.95, <i>p</i><.001) predicted depressive symptoms (R<sup>2</sup>=.49, <i>p</i><.001).Conclusion: Alcohol addiction, paranoid ideas, and suicidal ideas were found to be factors that affect depressive symptoms in military social service personnel.

Evaluation of an Educational Intervention Based on Theory of Planned Behavior to Reduce Suicidal Ideation and Attempts in Drug Addicts Receiving Methadone: A Quasi-Experimental Study

Background Drug addiction can lead to suicidal ideation or suicide attempt so that half of those who attempt suicide have a history of substance abuse. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of educational intervention based on Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) on reducing suicidal ideation and suicide attempt of addicts. Methods A longitudinal quasi-experimental educational intervention was conducted on 200 methadone-treated addicts with suicidal ideation under the auspices of government addiction centers of Shiraz city from 2021 to 2022. Baseline data on demographic characteristics, suicidal ideation, and TPB questionnaire were collected from two groups at the beginning of the study and then three months after the intervention. The experiment group received educational intervention including sessions of individual and group counseling, training and organizational supports. The questionnaire was completed by both the experimental and control groups before the educational intervention and three months after the educational intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22 software through independent t-test, Chi-square and paired t-test (p = 0.05). Results The mean age of addicts in the experimental and control groups was 38.80 ± 11.64 and 39.41 ± 11.18 years, respectively (p = 0.206). 22% of the experimental group and 18% of the control group had a history of suicide. According to the results, there was no significant difference between the experimental and control groups in terms of knowledge, attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control before the educational intervention, however, the mentioned variables increased significantly in the experimental group three months after the educational intervention. There was no significant difference in suicide attempt and suicidal ideation between the experimental and control groups before the educational intervention, however, there was a significant change in the experimental group after the educational intervention. Conclusion The results of the present study showed the effect of educational intervention on the knowledge, attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, suicidal ideation and suicidal attempt of addicts, thus confirming the effectiveness of the TPB-based intervention on reducing suicide of addicts.

Life is precious: A quasi-experimental study of a community-based program to prevent suicide among Latina adolescents in New York City.

Rising rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) among U.S. Latina adolescents urgently need attention. Life is Precious (LIP) is a culturally responsive, community-based, afterschool-model program offering wellness-support services to supplement outpatient mental health treatment for Latina adolescents experiencing STB's. This 12-month quasi-experimental pilot study explored LIP's impact on clinical outcomes. Latina adolescents newly enrolled in LIP and receiving outpatient treatment (n = 31) and those newly starting outpatient treatment only (n = 12; Usual Care) were assessed for Suicidal Ideation (Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire; SIQ) and depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-9). We estimated differences in mean scores using longitudinal linear mixed models and adjusted risk ratios (ARRs) of SIQ-25%, SIQ-50%, and PHQ-9-5-point improvements using exact logistic models. The direction of the estimated impact of LIP was positive [differences (95% CIs): -15.5 (-34.16, 3.15) for SIQ; -1.16 (-4.39, 2.07) for PHQ-9], with small-to-moderate nonsignificant effect sizes (0.19-0.34). LIP participants saw two to three times higher prevalence than controls of SIQ-25%, SIQ-50%, and PHQ-9-5-point improvements; ARRs (95% CIs) were 1.91 (0.61, 3.45), 3.04 (0.43, 11.33), and 1.97 (0.44, 5.07), respectively. Suicidal behaviors also decreased in LIP. The effects of LIP were in positive directions across clinical outcomes, warranting further research on its effectiveness in decreasing STBs.

Validation of the Spanish ASQ translation: Screening pediatric patients for suicide-risk in Argentina

BackgroundThe high frequency of suicide risk in adolescents necessitates the development and validation of specific tools for systematic screening. To date, there are translated, but not validated suicide risk screening tools in Spanish. ObjectiveTo validate the Spanish version of the Ask Suicide-Screening Questions (ASQ) for suicide risk screening in pediatric patients in Argentina. MethodUsing a cross-sectional multicenter design, a convenience sample of pediatric patients aged 10 to 18 years old were recruited from outpatient/inpatient medical settings and private psychiatric clinics. The Spanish version of the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (SIQ) assessment tool was used as a standard criterion to validate the ASQ. ResultsA total of 301/380 pediatric patients were screened for suicide risk. Twentyeight percent of the entire sample (83/301) of youth screened positive on the ASQ, and 21% (62/301) screened positive on the SIQ/SIQ-JR and were considered “at risk” for suicide. Compared with the SIQ, the Spanish ASQ yielded a sensitivity of 96.8% (95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 88.8–99.6%), specificity of 90.4% (95% CI: 85.9–93.8%), positive predictive value of 72.3% (95 CI: 61.4–81.6%), and negative predictive value of 99.1% (95% CI: 96.7–99.9%). The positive Likelihood Ratio (LR) was 10.1 (95% CI: 6.1–14.0), and the negative LR was 0.03 (95% CI: −0.01–0.09). Kappa was 0.77 (95% CI: 0.69–0.86), and the Area Under the Curve was 0.94 (95% CI: 0.91–0.97). ConclusionThe Spanish language ASQ demonstrated strong psychometric properties, providing initial evidence that it is a valid tool for identifying Spanish-speaking youth at risk for suicide.

Psychometric properties evaluation of the Indonesian version of the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSSI) questionnaire using a Rasch model.

This study used the Rasch model to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSSI) questionnaire in the case of College Students. The BSSI is a measure for assessing suicidal ideation. Despite being a widely used instrument to examine suicidality, there is a limited report about the psychometric evaluation of its Indonesian version. The BSSI was given to 103 Indonesian university students selected through a simple random sampling technique from various faculties. The sample in this study was aged between 19 and 21. The results showed that the BSSI's factor structure was unidimensional, based on the evidence from a confirmatory factor in combination with Rasch analyses. The unidimensional indicates that the BSSI questionnaire measures one dominant variable, namely suicidal ideation. Furthermore, the items fit the model, their response categories functioned well, and no local item dependence was identified. The results of the BSSI questionnaire reliability test using Winstep show that item reliability and person reliability are 0.96 and 0.86, respectively. These results indicate that the items in the BSSI questionnaire can measure suicidal ideation accurately. The results indicated that BSSI's psychometric properties were reliable and valid for measuring Indonesian college students' suicidal ideation.

A Modification on Intra Class Correlation Estimation for Ordinal Scale Variable Using Latent Variable Model

Introduction: A common way for computing test-retest reliability is Intra Class Correlation which was developed for continuous variables. But it widely used to assess test-retest reliability in questionnaires with Likert scales. Most of the time consecutive numbers regarded as option labels of a question. If the probability of choosing options be the same, using this method is logic, otherwise it is not. Therefore, in this study a modified estimator of ICC is proposed to improve the estimation of ICC for ordinal scale by using latent variable model.
 Methods: In this method test-retest answers were considered as bivariate variables and cumulative Probit latent variable model was fitted. A simulation study with N=1500 replicates was conducted to compare the ICC estimations of Likert scale approach with a latent variable approach. Different sample sizes (n=20, 30) was generated with different correlation parameters. The simulations were repeated for questions with 3 and 5 options with different probability of selecting options of a question. After that the two approaches were run on Beck for suicidal ideation questionnaire.
 Results: In general the difference between Likert scale approach and latent variable approach were higher in 3 question options compared to 5 and also by increasing sample size and correlation between bivariate data, Root Mean Square Errors and bias were decreased. Assuming different probabilities for options, there was a considerably difference between Root Mean Square Errors, bias and standard deviation of estimation of ICC in two models. Using latent variable approach resulted less bias, SD and Root Mean Square Errors especially in lower sample sizes.
 Conclusion: Simulations showed when the probability of choosing options of a question are skewed, using this method reduced Root Mean Square Errors especially when the options are less. This method was affected more on standard deviation compare to bias of estimations.

Assessing the Validity of the Ask Suicide-Screening Questions in Black Youth.

Given the increasing rates of suicide and nonfatal suicide attempts among Black youth in the United States, it is crucial that screening tools are valid in identifying Black youth at risk of suicide. This study assessed the validity of the Ask Suicide-Screening Questions (ASQ) among Black youth. This analysis used pooled data from 3 ASQ validation studies of pediatric medical patients aged 10-21 years. All participants completed the ASQ and the gold standard Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire. Of the 1083 participants, 330 (30.5%) were non-Hispanic Black and 753 (69.5%) were non-Hispanic White. ASQ psychometric properties for Black and White participants were equivalent (sensitivity=94% vs. 90.9%; specificity=91.4% vs. 91.8%, respectively). There were no significant differences in ASQ psychometric properties between Black and White youth, indicating that the ASQ is valid for screening Black youth at risk of suicide.

A validation of adult suicidal ideation questionnaire among Nigerian University students.

To prevent completed suicide among young adults in the university, assessment of suicidal ideation should be encouraged. This study aims to investigate the reliability, exploratory factor analysis, and validity of adult suicidal ideation questionnaire among Nigerian university students. Descriptive cross-sectional survey was the preferred choice of research design for this study utilizing convenience sampling technique to recruit participants. 6 universities divided into two equal numbers between federal-funded and state-funded ones in Nigeria were selected, and 2,702 students were sampled to fill the questionnaires. Instruments for data collection included Rosenberg Self-esteem questionnaire and Kessler Psychological distress scale to validate ASIQ. Ethical clearance for this study was collected from Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Nigeria. The results of the study showed that internal consistency of ASIQ was .951 while validity analyses proved that self-esteem and psychological distress diverged and converged respectively with the three subdomains of suicidal ideation as measured by ASIQ. This study concludes that ASIQ has slight modification from the original version among young adults in Nigeria. The scale is reliable and valid but as a 22-item instrument on a 5-point Likert scale.

Correlation between Suicidal Ideation and Addiction to Various Social Media Platforms in a Sample of Young Adults: The Benefits of Physical Activity

The rise in suicide death rates has become a major public health concern, which has led to increased addiction to internet and social media platforms. Despite the limited research available on the relationship between suicidal ideation and addiction to social media such as Instagram and TikTok, this study aims to examine this connection. The study design is cross-sectional, quantitative, comparative, and correlational, with a quasi-experimental approach. The sample includes 315 young adults aged 20 to 30 who were surveyed through the administration of the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (SIQ) and the Social Media Disorder Scale-Short Form (SMDS-SF) surveys. The results showed differences in addiction levels based on the type of social media, specifically between TikTok and other social media platforms. The study found that female participants who engage in physical activity (PA) four times a week had lower levels of suicidal ideation than those who did not; there were no differences compared to male participants. This suggests that PA may be a potential strategy for preventing and reducing suicide-related phenomena. The results also indicate that addiction to social media was a statistically significant predictor of suicidal ideation, after controlling for gender and PA.

Acceptability and Feasibility of "Village," a Digital Communication App for Young People Experiencing Low Mood, Thoughts of Self-harm, and Suicidal Ideation to Obtain Support From Family and Friends: Mixed Methods Pilot Open Trial.

Young people experiencing low mood, thoughts related to self-harm, and suicidal ideation often struggle to communicate their emotions and receive timely support from family and friends. Technologically delivered support interventions may be useful in addressing this need. This paper aimed to evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of "Village," a communication app co-designed with young people and their family and friends from New Zealand. A mixed methods pilot open trial design was adopted. Participants were primarily recruited via social media advertisements and clinicians in specialist mental health services over an 8-month period. The primary outcomes were acceptability of the app (via thematically analyzed qualitative feedback and retention rates) and feasibility of conducting a larger randomized controlled trial gauged via effectiveness of recruitment methods, completion of chosen outcome measures, and occurrence of unanticipated operational issues. Secondary outcomes were app usability, safety, and changes in symptoms of depression (via the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 modified for adolescents), suicidal ideation (on the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire), and functioning (using the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 or Child and Youth version). A total of 26 young people ("users") were enrolled in the trial, of which 21 recruited friends and family members ("buddies") and completed quantitative outcome measures at baseline, 4 weeks, and 3 months. Furthermore, 13 users and 12 buddies also provided qualitative feedback about the app, identifying the key themes of appeal of app features and layout, usefulness of its content, and technological challenges (primarily with onboarding and notifications). Users gave Village a mean rating of 3.8 (range 2.7-4.6) out of 5 on a 5-point scale for app quality and an overall star rating of 3.4 out of 5 for subjective quality. Within this limited sample, users reported a clinically significant reduction in depressive symptoms (P=.007), but nonsignificant changes in suicidal ideation and functioning. The embedded risk detection software was activated on 3 occasions, and no additional support was required for users. During this open trial, Village was found to be acceptable, usable, and safe. Analisis Risiko Bunuh Diri pada Mahasiswa Kesehatan di Kota Banda Aceh

Background: Suicide is the main cause of death for students. Some studies report that half of college students have felt so depressed that they were useful. College life can be a time of high stress. This study aims to describe the risk of suicide in health students in Banda Aceh.Methods: This type of research is a quantitative research using a descriptive correlative method. The sampling technique in this study used purposive sampling with a sample of 171 students. Data collection method using Adult Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (ASIQ).Result: The majority of respondents were health students from the Faculty of Nursing (67.3%), female (88.9%), 2016 class (50.9%), adult (90.6%), from high school (84 ,8%), both parents are still alive (85.4%), have parents who work as civil servants (52.6%), and live in a boarding house/rent (50.3%). The age of the students in this study was between 18 years to 23 years. The majority of health students at Syiah Kuala University experienced a low risk of suicide (87.7%).Conclusion : It can be concluded that health students have a suicide risk which is characterized by thoughts related to suicidal ideation, but these ideas rarely appear so that their suicide risk category is low.

Clinical covariates of self-harm and suicidality in a community sample of Irish Travellers

IntroductionIrish Travellers are an indigenous minority group in Ireland. Health inequalities have been widely reported within the Traveller community, with a shorter life expectancy of 11 years less than the general population. Travellers also have higher mortality rates of 3.5 times higher than the general population in Ireland. Suicide is a serious problem in the Traveller community with a suicide rate of 11% among Travellers: 6 times higher in women and 7 times higher in men compared with their counterparts in the general population.ObjectivesThere is a paucity of research into the clinical characteristics of self-harm and suicidality among Irish Travellers despite the elevated suicide rates in this community. This study aims to bridge the knowledge gap in the mental health of Irish Travellers, focusing on the clinical factors associated with self-harm and suicidality in a community sample of Irish Travellers.MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study. Study participants completed self-report and interview-based validated questionnaires that screen for anxiety (General Anxiety Disorder assessment: GAD-7), depression (Patient Health Questionnaire: PHQ-9), and suicidality (Suicide Behaviours Questionnaire-Revised: SBQ-R and Adult Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire: ASIQ). Ethical approval was granted through the Clinical Research Ethics Committee, University College Dublin.ResultsDespite an active recruitment campaign, participation rate from Irish Travellers in this study was low, with only five participants completing this study. Three were male. The mean age of the study participants was 39±14.7 years. All had pre-existing mental health diagnoses, most commonly anxiety disorder. All had at least one previous episode of self-harm and 80% had a positive family history of self-harming behaviour. No participants reported a history of alcohol or substance misuse. Over half of the participants reported severe anxiety and depressive symptoms with median GAD-7 score of 19 and PHQ-9 score of 21 respectively. All participants demonstrated significant risk of suicidal behaviour based on their SBQ-R and ASIQ scores.ConclusionsDespite elevated rates of suicidality and mental illness in this ethnic minority group, Irish Travellers demonstrated lower participation in mental health research, including this study. These recruitment challenges suggest that factors such as stigma, shame and lack of trust may be contributory. These factors may also act as barriers to them accessing mental healthcare when they develop mental health symptoms such as anxiety and depression, associated with increased risk of self-harm and suicidal behaviours. There is a need for better engagement strategies with Travellers to promote awareness into their needs and reduce mental health problems in this population.Disclosure of InterestNone Declared

Abnormal amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation values as a neuroimaging biomarker for major depressive disorder with suicidal attempts in adolescents: A resting-state fMRI and support vector machine analysis.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with suicidal attempts (SAs) among adolescents, with suicide being the most common cause of mortality in this age group. This study explored the predictive utility of support vector machine (SVM)-based analyses of amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) results as a neuroimaging biomarker for aiding the diagnosis of MDD with SA in adolescents. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) analyses of 71 first-episode, drug-naive adolescent MDD patients with SA and 54 healthy control individuals were conducted. ALFF and SVM methods were used to analyze the imaging data. Relative to healthy control individuals, adolescent MDD patients with a history of SAs showed reduced ALFF values in the bilateral medial superior frontal gyrus (mSFG) and bilateral precuneus. These lower ALFF values were also negatively correlated with child depression inventory (CDI) scores while reduced bilateral precuneus ALFF values were negatively correlated with Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire Junior (SIQ-JR) scores. SVM analyses showed that reduced ALFF values in the bilateral mSFG and bilateral precuneus had diagnostic accuracy levels of 76.8% (96/125) and 82.4% (103/125), respectively. Adolescent MDD patients with a history of SA exhibited abnormal ALFF. The identified abnormalities in specific brain regions may be involved in the pathogenesis of this condition and may help identify at-risk adolescents. Specifically, reductions in the ALFF in the bilateral mSFG and bilateral precuneus may be indicative of MDD and SA in adolescent patients.

Negative Urgency, (Lack of) Premeditation, and Sensation Seeking: Indirect Relationships with Suicidal Ideation through Thwarted Interpersonal Needs

Objective Differences in how impulsivity is conceptualized, along with a myopic focus on impulsivity’s relationship with historical suicidal behaviors, have resulted in limited implications made from prior research regarding impulsivity and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The current study investigated the indirect effect facets of impulsivity may have on suicidal ideation, specifically, through thwarted interpersonal needs. Methods Participants were N = 424 undergraduate students who completed a cross-sectional survey. Participants completed the Urgency, Premeditation, Perseverance, Sensation Seeking, Impulsive Behavior Scale (UPPS), the Adult Suicide Ideation Questionnaire (ASIQ), and the Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire (INQ). Parallel mediation models were run to examine the relation between facets of impulsivity, perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, and suicidal ideation. Results Thwarted belonginess and perceived burdensomeness significantly accounted for the variance in the relation between negative urgency and suicidal ideation. Neither thwarted belongingness nor perceived burdensomeness significantly explained variance in the relation between (lack of) premeditation and suicidal ideation. Conversely, perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belonginess significantly explained the inverse relation between sensation seeking and suicidal ideation (i.e., greater sensation seeking was related to lower perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness and in turn lower suicidal ideation). Conclusion Negative urgency, in particular, is related to suicidal ideation through thwarted interpersonal needs. Future research should continue to differentiate between various types of impulsivity and its relationship with both suicidal ideation and behaviors utilizing both cross-sectional and ambulatory assessments of these constructs. HIGHLIGHTS Negative urgency is related to suicidal ideation. Negative urgency is related to thwarted interpersonal needs. Thwarted interpersonal needs partially explain the relation between negative urgency and suicidal ideation.

Predictors of suicidal ideation severity among treatment-seeking young people with major depressive disorder: The role of state and trait anxiety.

Depression and suicidal ideation are closely intertwined. Yet, among young people with depression, the specific factors that contribute to changes in suicidal ideation over time are uncertain. Factors other than depressive symptom severity, such as comorbid psychopathology and personality traits, might be important contributors. Our aim was to identify contributors to fluctuations in suicidal ideation severity over a 12-week period in young people with major depressive disorder receiving cognitive behavioural therapy. Data were drawn from two 12-week randomised, placebo-controlled treatment trials. Participants (N = 283) were 15-25 years old, with moderate to severe major depressive disorder. The primary outcome measure was the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire, administered at baseline and weeks 4, 8 and 12. A series of linear mixed models was conducted to examine the relationship between Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire score and demographic characteristics, comorbid psychopathology, personality traits and alcohol use. Depression and anxiety symptom severity, and trait anxiety, independently predicted higher suicidal ideation, after adjusting for the effects of time, demographics, affective instability, non-suicidal self-injury and alcohol use. Both state and trait anxiety are important longitudinal correlates of suicidal ideation in depressed young people receiving cognitive behavioural therapy, independent of depression severity. Reducing acute psychological distress, through reducing depression and anxiety symptom severity, is important, but interventions aimed at treating trait anxiety could also potentially be an effective intervention approach for suicidal ideation in young people with depression.

Compassion in three perspectives: Associations with depression and suicidal ideation in a clinical adolescent sample

Abstract Background Adolescence is a critical period for mental development where the consequences of psychopathologies can be exceedingly harmful, and compassion has been identified as a protective factor for adolescents’ mental well-being. Aim The aim of this study was to explore three perspectives of compassion – Self-compassion, Compassion for others, and Compassion from others – and their relationship with depression and suicidal ideation in adolescents. Method This Swedish cross-sectional study included 259 psychiatric patients (ages 16–22). Participants completed a survey including the self-assessment scales “Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale – Second Edition” (RADS-2), “Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire – Junior Version” (SIQ-JR), and “Compassion Engagement and Action Scale – Youth” (CEAS-Y). Linear regression analyses were used to determine whether participants’ levels of compassion predicted depression and suicidal ideation. Results Self-compassion and Compassion from others significantly predicted both depression and suicidal ideation. Girls, on average, reported higher levels of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation and lower levels of self-compassion compared to boys. The correlation between compassion and depressive symptoms, however, appeared to be stronger in boys. There was also a positive correlation between Compassion for others and suicidal ideation. Conclusions The results suggest that Self-compassion and Compassion from others may have a significant protective effect against depression and suicidal ideation, especially in boys. However, due to the relatively small sample of boys (n = 40), further research is needed before any solid conclusion can be drawn regarding possible gender differences. Additionally, the combination of low Self-compassion and higher levels of Compassion for others may be associated with suicidal ideation.

Context: Postvention includes procedures to alleviate the distress of suicidally bereaved individuals. Methods: Total 70 subjects were interviewed before intervention by assessing background variables and clinical variables. The levels of psychological markers were assessed by using defeat scale, entrapment scale and adult suicidal ideation questionnaire. Experimental arm received postvention focused strategies sessions conducted for the period of 5 weeks. Face to face sessions were conducted in the first week for 3 times. Subsequent follow up sessions were conducted once in a week for the period of 4 weeks through phone communication. Control arm received standard methods of care. Posttest was conducted at the end of 5th week by using the same assessment techniques in experimental arm and control arm. Results: Paired‘t’ test showed statistical significance in scaling down the psychological markers in experimental arm comparatively to the control arm among suicide attempters. Unpaired ‘t’ test showed statistical significance between experimental and control arm. Significant positive correlation was observed between the psychological markers in experimental arm. Non significant correlation was observed between the psychological markers in control arm. Conclusion: Postvention focused strategies was quite effective for curtailing psychological markers among suicide attempters.

Evidence for validity, reliability and measurement invariance of the emotion regulation questionnaire for children and adolescents (ERQ-CA) in secondary students from Chile

Emotion regulation (ER) is associated with both healthy and unhealthy behavioral and affective responses, especially in adolescents. It is frequently assessed by self-report measures such as the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents (ERQ-CA), which has shown mixed psychometric properties when used in Spanish-speaking adolescents. The present study provides evidence for its validity and reliability in a sample of secondary students in Chile. Six-hundred and thirty-four students were recruited from ten educational institutions to complete the ERQ-CA, along with the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Skills Questionnaire (CBTSQ), the Suicide Ideation Questionnaire Junior (SIQ-JR), the Multidimensional Adolescent Functioning Scale (MAFS) and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed on the ERQ-CA for two- and single-factor models. Convergent and discriminant validity as well as measurement invariance were also tested. The original ERQ-CA two-factor structure showed the best model fit and parsimony along with high internal consistency. It also demonstrated high convergent and discriminant validity, with reappraisal strategies positively correlating with cognitive-behavioral skills and psychosocial functioning and negatively with suicide ideation and depressive symptoms, while the opposite was true for suppression strategies. Partial scalar invariance was established when testing by biological sex (male/female) and psychiatric treatment history (past/current/no). We conclude that the ERQ-CA was found to be a valid and reliable self-report instrument for the assessment of ER strategies in secondary students, proving its utility as a research and clinical tool.

Assessing Suicidal Ideation in Young People With Depression: Factor Structure of the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire.

Evaluating suicidal ideation in young people seeking mental health treatment is an important component of clinical assessment and treatment planning. To reduce the burden of youth suicide, we need to improve our understanding of suicidal ideation, its underlying constructs, and how ideation translates into suicidal behaviour. Using exploratory factor analysis, we investigated the dimensionality of the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (SIQ) among 273 participants aged 15-25 with Major Depressive Disorder. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) analysis was used to explore associations between latent factors and actual suicidal behaviour. Findings suggested that the SIQ assesses multiple factors underlying suicidal ideation. AUROC analyses demonstrated that latent factors relating to both active and passive suicidal ideation predicted past-month suicidal behaviour and suicide attempt. These findings contribute to an improved understanding of the complexities of suicidal ideation and relationships with suicidal behaviour in young people with depression.
