A Study on the Knowledge about Improved Sugarcane Production Technology in Basti District of Uttar Pradesh, India

This study was undertaken to assess the knowledge of farmers towards improved Sugarcane production technology in Basti district of Utter Pradesh, India. The data were collected through pre-tested interview schedule form for 120 respondents who were selected randomly.. Statistical analysis was conducted after preliminary data cleaning. The study revealed that a) most respondents were middle aged with 56.66 percent , b) 38.38 percent respondents had marginal land holding, c)The maximum number of respondents having medium level scientific orientation, mass media exposure, extension contact and d) 45.00 percent of the respondents had medium level of knowledge about sugarcane production technology. Respondents had knowledge about field preparation, varieties, time of sowing and harvesting. However, and they had less knowledge about seed treatment, yield of sugarcane par ha etc. Other attributes such as age, education, caste, annual income, source of information, scientific orientation, mass media exposure, risk bearing capacity and extension contact were positively and significantly correlated with knowledge of sugarcane production technology.

Analysis on adoption of sugarcane production technologies of UAS Dharwad by the farmers of North Karnataka

The present study on adoption of sugarcane production technologies of UAS Dharwad by the farmers of North Karnataka was undertaken during 2021-22. The ex-post facto research design was employed for the study. Among sample of 160 sugarcane growers, 20 sugarcane growers were randomly selected from each village of selected two villages from talukas viz., Athani and Gokak from Belagavi district and Jamakhandi and Mudhol from Bagalkot district. Data was collected by personal interview method using structured schedule. The major findings of the study were, 38.12 per cent of sugarcane growers observed in medium category of adoption followed by high (33.75 %) and low (28.12 %) category of adoption. With respect to adoption of individual production technologies cent per cent of growers adopted soil type, earthing up (after 110 days of planting), hand weeding and harvesting of sugarcane 10-14 months after planting. Majority of growers adopted recommended varieties, 120 cm row spacing, quantity of FYM, quality of setts, quantity of setts, flood irrigation, intercropping of maize, de trashing, spraying of post emergent herbicides, harvesting of sugarcane within two months of emergence of flower and manual harvesting.

Knowledge of sugarcane production technologies of UAS Dharwad by the farmers of North Karnataka

The present study on knowledge of sugarcane production technologies of UAS Dharwad by the farmers of North Karnataka was undertaken during 2021-22. The ex-post facto research design was employed for the study. Among sample of 160 sugarcane growers, 20 sugarcane growers were randomly selected from each village of selected two villages from talukas viz., Athani and Gokak from Belagavi district and Jamakhandi and Mudhol from Bagalkot district. Data was collected by personal interview method using structured schedule. The study revealed that, 40.64 per cent of sugarcane growers belonged to medium category of knowledge followed by high (32.50 %) and low (26.86 %) category. With respect knowledge of individual production technologies cent per cent of growers had knowledge of suitable soil type, varieties, planting time (June-September, January- February), spacing of 120cm, methods of irrigation (drip and flood), quantity of FYM, intercropping of maize, after cultivation practices (earthingup, de trashing and propping), spraying of post emergent herbicides, hand weeding (after 45-60 days and after 90 days of planting) and knowledge of harvesting measures.

An Analysis of Sugarcane Farming and Jaggery Production in Narsinghpur District of Madhya Pradesh vis-a-vis Growers' Characteristics and Economic Motivations

The study was conducted in the Narsinghpur district of Madhya Pradesh, encompassing all five tehsils of the district. The findings of the study revealed that the majority of sugarcane growers were middle-aged and had a graduation degree. The average land holding size was medium and the area cultivated for sugarcane production was also 1.01 to 2.00 hectares. Sugarcane growers had medium-level experience in cultivation and processing, and the average size of their jaggery unit was medium. They earned medium income from both jaggery and sugarcane sales, and sold jaggery primarily through commission agents at the regular market yard. Approximately 67.67% of the growers had received training in sugarcane production technology, while 85.78% had received training in processing and value addition. The average jaggery unit had medium functionality and employed 15 workers. Over 80% of the growers stated that the profitability in processing sugarcane was the main reason for their diversion towards processing and value addition.

Economic impact of improved Adsali sugarcane production technology in Maharashtra

Sugar is the largest agro based industry after textile. In Maharashtra, the proportionate share of sugarcane area is about 5 per cent of the gross cropped area. This paper highlights to assess the impact of sugarcane production technologies, resource use productivity and resource use efficiency, cost effectiveness and decomposition of productivity gain in Adsali sugarcane cultivation in different recovery zones of the Maharashtra State. This investigation is based on the primary data collected from 270 sample cultivators spread over three sugarcane recovery zones. A specially designed questionnaire was prepared for the year 2012-13 and sample farmers were personally interviewed. The technologies viz; soil type, proper seed rate, management of irrigation, use of N, P and K were adopted more in all the recovery zones. And the technologies regarding preparatory tillage, use of manures, seed selection, use of micronutrients and seed treatment were used at low level in all the recovery zones. The nine resource variables included in the production function analysis have jointly explained 76, 74 and 73 percent of the total variation in the yield of low, medium and high technology adopters, respectively. The variables like use of human labour, manures and technology adoption index are positive and significant indicating these are the important inputs to which output was highly responsive. The ICBR ratio indicates that the high adopter farmers were in profit than medium and low adopters. The decomposition analysis inferred that the high adopters were not able to consolidate the technology gain.

Web-Based Data Management Techniques for Coordinated Trials of Sugarcane Technologies

Sugarcane production technologies being developed by research institutions are highly location specific and require multi-location trials in diverse conditions before adoption. In India, multi-location trials of technologies are conducted under All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Sugarcane through a network of 36 centres in four disciplines of crop improvement, crop production, entomology and plant pathology. Monitoring and evaluation of trials is accomplished through experts’ field visits, meetings and workshop. Sugarcane being a long duration crop, a large amount of trial observation data are recorded by centres at various crop stages. Data are analysed, compiled and documented by centre officials, principal investigator and project coordinator for interpretation of trial results. Traditional system of data management poses many issues such as retyping of data, late reporting, wrong/missing data, poor documentation, wrong interpretation and poor decision support. A web-based software AICRP Reporter has been implemented for recording and reporting of AICRP trial data to solve these problems and to increase efficiency. Paper gives brief information about the data management technique used in this system for an effective coordination among various AICRP stakeholders for achieving its objectives. System enables timely reporting of data; consistent and reliable reports; and remote monitoring. Data once recorded can be utilized in historical perspective for new knowledge discovery. System is generic in nature and can be implemented for other such research organizations at national and international level with specific knowledge updation.

Integration of sugarcane production technologies for enhanced cane and sugar productivity targeting to increase farmers' income: strategies and prospects.

The idea of doubling the farmers' income in next 5years has been slated by the Government of India. The specific target of increasing sugarcane farmers' income could be achieved by developing cost-effective technologies, transferring them from laboratory to land, educating the farmers and creating a linkage between all stakeholders. Consistent efforts shall be required to harness all possible sources for increasing farmer's income in and outside the agriculture sector with respect to improvement in sugarcane and sugar productivity, enhancement in resource use efficiency and adopting various other ways and means including intercropping, management of pests and diseases, use of biotechnological tools and minimizing post-harvest deterioration. The advances in sugarcane biotechnology could become remarkable in the coming years, both in terms of improving productivity as well as increasing the value and utility of this crop substantially. In future, genetically modified sugarcane varieties with increased resistance to different biotic and abiotic stresses would serve more towards sugarcane crop improvement. Any possibility of enhancement in the income of sugarcane farmers shall also be dependent upon the profitability and sustainability of the sugar industry. Integration of sugarcane production technologies for improvement in farm productivity, diversified sugarcane production system, reduced cost of cultivation along with increased processing plant efficiency and diversification to produce value added products shall ensure smooth and higher payment to the farmers. Development of low-cost technologies to convert "waste to resource" on a smaller scale shall also help the farmers to increase their income further. This paper focuses on possible measures to be taken up in each aspects of sugarcane cultivation including biotechnological approaches to achieve the goal of enhancing the income of sugarcane farmers substantially, particularly in the sub-tropical region of India.

Study on socio-phychological, socio-economical profile and constraints faced by the sugarcane growers in Meerut District of Western Uttar Pradesh

The present study was carried out during the year 2013–14 in Meerut district of western Uttar Pradesh. To know the socio-economic profile and constraints faced by the sugarcane growers. It was observed that most of the sugarcane growers belonging to the medium age group 31 to 50 years. The education status of most of the farmers were up to high school and most of the belongs to general caste, they had 5 to 8 members in a family, living in nuclear family system, the land holding size was medium 2 to 4 hectare, most of the farmers having medium dairy, pucca animal shed, improved agricultural implements, transportation facility as like cycle, electricity at home and at farm both. Most of the farmers were found to utilized radio and television as information sources to gain knowledge about sugarcane production technology, most of the farmers were not any institutional membership. The major constraints faced by the sugarcane growers were found to lack of knowledge about improved IPM practices theses were ranked in first, less number of production unit and storage facilities of bio-agents in rural areas. It was ranked in second, old information/communication technology in government extension system. It was ranked in third, lack of information about bio-agents, bio-fertilizer, bio-pesticides etc. It was ranked in fourth.

Training of sugar industries professionals, an effective tools to disseminate the sugarcane production technology

In spite of evolution of high yielding high sugar varieties, as well as production technology developed by sugarcane research institutions of U.P, the average cane yield of Uttar Pradesh is 66 ton/hectare which is less than country's average yield 70 ton/hectare. About 35 lakh sugarcane farmers are producing sugarcane in the state and supplying in 116 sugar factories through 168 cane societies. Due to low adoptability of sugarcane production techniques by farmers is partially responsible for that. The Cane development personnel of sugar industries and cane department of Uttar Pradesh played effective role to disseminate the production techniques as they are very close contact to the farmers and frequently interactions made over the year for the purpose of cane development and cane marketing. To know the impact of scientific training on the participant's knowledge level, training programme conducted at sugarcane research institute Shahjahanpur during 29 August to 02 September 2016. In the training programme 51 participants were participated and 22 scientific lectures delivered through slide presentation with Lab and farm visit. Before and after training, pre & post knowledge test were conducted to know the knowledge level of the participants. It is observed that after completion of training programme, knowledge level of participants increased on the basis of educational qualification, working experience and age factors respectively.

Correlates of training needs and constraints faced by the sugarcane growers

The present investigation was carried out in Rahuri and Karjat tahsils of Ahmednagar districts (M.S.). The results of study revealed that majority of the sugarcane growers had medium to high level of knowledge about sugarcane production technology. A majority of them had partial knowledge about pest and disease management followed by the intercultural operation, recommended varieties, fertilizer management, irrigation management and soil testing. The respondents’ characteristics viz., age, education, annual income and social participation had negative and significant relationship with their training needs at 5 per cent level of significance. Size of land holding and knowledge of the sugarcane growers showed positive and significant relationship with the training needs. Training on biological pest control, availability of fertilizers and crop loan in cheaper rate were some of suggestions made by the sugarcane growers.

Sugarcane and Sugar Industry in Bangladesh: An Overview

The current production of sugar in Bangladesh is only about 5% of total demand. About 20% demand is fulfilled by jaggery production mainly from sugarcane and remaining 75% of total requirement is fulfilled by importation. The main causes of lower sugar production of the industry include less supply of sugarcane in the factories and very poor sugar recovery. The area under cane cultivation is drastically reduced due to pressure of cereals and other short-duration crops which cause lower amount of sugarcane production. The yield of cane per unit area is lower than the other sugar producing countries. The government of Bangladesh is emphasizing the attainment of self-sufficiency in sugar and jaggery production by boosting up the sugarcane production in the country. Moreover, the government has taken some steps to introduce tropical sugar beet for sugar production. Considering this aspect, Bangladesh Sugarcrop Research Institute (BSRI) has developed and recommended a good numbers of sugarcane production technologies from planting to harvesting. The technologies include releasing of a large number of high yielding, high sugar content, diseases and pest resistant sugarcane varieties, intercropping with sugarcane, spaced transplanting technology, ratoon management technology, diseases and pest management technology, updating the fertilizer dose for 12 agro-ecological zones and development of some important implements for sugarcane cultivation. BSRI released some varieties which are suitable for jaggery production and some are abiotic stress (drought, water-logging, saline and flood) tolerant. Moreover, BSRI has been doing research on tropical sugar beet to introduce its cultivation in the country. Introduction of sugarcane in the river basins, plain land of hilly areas and the saline areas can considerably increase the sugarcane production. Furthermore, if the BSRI-recommended technologies are followed properly, the sugarcane production and thereby sugar and jaggery production will be certainly increased.

CaneInfo: A User-Centered Website for Cane Growers and Cane Development Personnel

Sugarcane production technologies have been delivered through different media over the years, in countries such as India. In the early years, radio had played a significant role in the transfer of technology process, followed by Television. Farm magazines and newspapers too have played a role throughout. In the 1990s, the Internet arrived and has interconnected the communities to an unimaginable extent. The extension educators in the developed countries had been quick to discover the power of posting information on the web where thousands of people can download and view this information. The commitment of Government of India is that by the end of 2012, every single panchayat will be connected with high-speed broadband access. It is imperative therefore for the sugarcane extension system operating across the states, to shift from being predominantly print-focused, in line with the demands and requirements of the information age. Keeping this in view, the Sugarcane Breeding Institute of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, has taken the lead and developed a user-centered and database-driven website, CaneInfo (available in www.caneinfo.nic.in) to cater to the needs of the stakeholders in sugarcane farming. The paper describes how CaneInfo was developed systematically, taking into account the information needs of the target audience, and how it was evaluated before hosting. Finally, explaining various features of the website, the paper dwells on the role CaneInfo is expected to play, in disseminating research—based and timely information to the sugarcane growers and sugar factory personnel, in its quest to make sugarcane production more remunerative in the country.

Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow: Envisioning improved sugarcane production technology for high yields and high sugar recovery in India

The Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research (IISR) is a leading crop science research institute of India conducting research on fundamental and applied aspects of sugarcane cultivation as well as to coordinate the research work on sugarcane in different states of the country. Established on February 16, 1952, the Institute has expanded considerably in terms of infrastructure. The Institute has 5 full-fledged Divisions and carried out pioneering research work on crop improvement, crop production, crop protection, crop mechanization and crop quality management aspects of the sugarcane crop. The Institute has all requisite modern facilities and is all set to share its research facilities and professional manpower with other agencies/institutions working on the cause of sugarcane development in India. To impart a still bigger role, the institute is thinking of a need for a key shift from sugarcane research systems to sugarcane innovation systems that need to have a guiding agenda ‘developmental’ rather than ‘scientific’, relations involved ‘diverse and consultative’ rather than ‘narrow and hierarchical’, and the partners in various combinations of scientists, entrepreneurs, farmers, developments workers and policy actors from the public and private sectors rather than scientists in other public agencies.

Net energy analyses of ethanol production from sugarcane in Northeast Brazil

Net energy analyses of alcohol production from sugarcane production technologies based on intensive use of fertiliser (System I) and on improved cultural practices without chemical fertiliser (System II) were considered. The energy analysis considered the total system inputs. The results indicate that both systems are almost equally efficient in terms of energy ratio.
