Biosynthesis of Ag doped MgO-NiO-ZnO nanocomposite with Ocimum Basilicum L extract and assessment of their biological and photocatalytic applications

In this project, Ag/doped MgONiO-ZnO nanocomposite (NCs) was synthesized by green chemistry method with Ocimum Basilicum L. (OBL) seeds extract for the first time. Phytochemicals present in plant extracts have oxidizing properties and can reduce existing metal ions into the nanocomposite. The successful synthesis of NCs was confirmed by various analyses. The UV–Vis peak at 335 nm confirmed the effective synthesis of NCs. The XRD spectrum illustrated the crystallite structure of NCs with a size of about 33 nm. Using FESEM/PSA/EDX analysis, the morphology, size, and purity of the NCs were examined, revealing a spherical shape with an average size of about 30 to 44 nm. The degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B dye (RhB) solution by NCs was reduced to 90 % under UV light after almost 100 min. According to the result of the MTT test, it was found that the synthesized NCs showed an acceptable killing effect on cancer B16F0 cells with IC50 amount about 490.2 μg/mL, while they did not cause the death of normal L929 ells.

Optimization using the response surface methodology for adsorption of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from transformer oil by magnetic CMCD-Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles

The main objective of this work was to synthesis a novel magnetic nanoparticles functionalized with β-cyclodextrin and use it to refine transformer oil contaminated with high concentration of PCBs. Carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin modified Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic nanoparticles (CMCD-Fe3O4@SiO2) were fabricated by grafting onto the core-shell silica magnetic nanoparticles surface using carbodiimide. The successful synthesis of nanocomposites was characterized by FTIR, XRD, VSM, SEM, TEM, VSM, TGA and EDX analysis. Hereinafter, the application of response surface methodology (RSM) based on the central composite design (CCD) was employed for optimization of the interactive effects of the three main variables on the removal efficiency of PCBs. A quadratic model was applied as a final model to measure the adequacy and the significance of the individual and interactive effects of variables via analysis of variance. The design matrix under the optimum conditions exhibited that the maximum PCBs removal of 82% was attained to be at adsorbent dosage, contact time and temperature of 10 mg/mL, 30 min, and 50 °C, respectively. The obtained results revealed that the adsorbent dosage is known as the key operating parameter (P < 0.0001) affecting PCB removal efficiency. Thermodynamic parameters (ΔH0 > 0, ΔG0 > 0, ΔS0 > 0) were confirmed that the adsorption process was nonspontaneous and endothermic and assess physical phenomena occurring on the surface of adsorbent. The experimental results were proposed that the as-synthesized β-cyclodextrin -modified magnetic nanoparticles could be an ideal candidate for purification of PCB compounds from contaminated transformer oil owing to its simple process and rapid separation and good reusability after five times.

Synthesis and characterization of PTP/[Fe(CN)3(dien)]·H2O nanocomposite; study of electrical, thermal and photocatalytic properties

Polythiophene/[Fe(CN)3(dien)]·H2O nanocomposite was synthesised by oxidative chemical polymerisation method. Photoadduct was synthesised by irradiating an equimolar mixture of potassium ferricyanide and diethylenetriamine which was then reduced to nanosize by high energy ball mill. The reduction of photoadduct to nanosize was confirmed from XRD. Nanocomposite of PTP with photoadduct was then prepared by oxidative chemical polymerisation using FeCl3 as oxidant. The successful synthesis of nanocomposite was confirmed from FTIR, XRD and SEM. TGA revealed higher thermal stability of nanocomposite as compared to pure PTP. I–V characteristics plotted on a log–log scale showed two distinct power law regions in case of nanocomposite. At lower voltages, the transport mechanism follows Ohm’s law. At higher voltages, the mechanism is consistent with space charge-limited emission. Furthermore, nanocomposite shows enhanced conductivity as compared to pure PTP. From dielectric studies, an appreciable high value of dielectric constant (4.4×106 at 100Hz) and ac conductivity (2.1×109S/m at 300kHz) of nanocomposite was obtained. This indicates the possible application of this nanocomposite in charge storage devices. The photocatalytic activity of the materials was studied against the methyl orange (MO) dye under UV–Vis light and 76% degradation of MO dye was achieved in presence of nanocomposite in just 2h, hence indicating its better photocatalytic efficiency. Results thus obtained indicate the synthesised nanocomposite can be used as a multifunctional material for different nanoelectronic devices.

Synthesis and characterization of PTP/K[Fe(CN)3(OH)(en)] nanocomposite: study of thermal, electrical and photocatalytic properties

Nanocomposite of polythiophene (PTP) with the photoadduct of potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) and ethylenediamine was synthesised via in situ oxidative chemical polymerisation. Photoadduct was synthesised by photoirradiation followed by substitution with ethylenediamine ligand using Osram photo lamp. The successful synthesis of photoadduct was supported by elemental analyser, UV–Vis and FTIR. From elemental analysis, the empirical formula assigned to the photoadduct was found to be K[Fe(CN)3(OH)(en)]. Photoadduct obtained was then milled in high energy ball mill to reduce it to nano size, which is confirmed from X-ray diffraction (XRD). Nanocomposite of PTP with photoadduct was then prepared by oxidative chemical polymerization using FeCl3 as oxidant. The successful synthesis of nanocomposite was confirmed from FTIR, XRD, SEM and TEM. TGA data confirmed the higher thermal stability of nanocomposite as compared to pure PTP. From dielectric studies, an appreciable high value of dielectric constant (2.7 × 105 at 100 Hz) and ac conductivity (9.6 × 108 S/m at 700 kHz) of nanocomposite was obtained. The high value of dielectric constant indicates the possible application of nanocomposite in charge storage devices. The photocatalytic activity of the materials was studied against the methyl orange dye under UV–Vis light and nanocomposite showed efficient photocatalytic activity (54 % degradation after 2 h) than pure PTP. Thus the nanocomposite synthesised can be used as a photocatalytic material for water purification.
