Innovative marketing and sustainable success in SMEs with evidence from Northern Iraq

This study examines the role of innovative marketing strategies in advancing sustainable marketing success among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with a particular focus on the context of Northern Iraq. In a region still grappling with the long-term effects of conflict, economic fragility, and limited market infrastructure, SMEs must adopt adaptive, forward-thinking approaches to remain competitive and resilient. Drawing on responses from 150 SME leaders across Erbil and Duhok, the research captures how tools such as digital communication, customer-driven pricing models, and environmentally conscious branding are being leveraged to create market differentiation. The findings reveal that while the correlations between innovation and sustainable marketing success are moderate in strength, they are consistently positive—indicating that innovation is a meaningful contributor to long-term business sustainability. These insights highlight the importance of strategic agility and the integration of sustainability principles in marketing efforts, particularly for SMEs operating in volatile and rapidly evolving environments.

The Innovation Imperative: Perceptions and Practices of First-Generation Women Entrepreneurs

- If you have your start-up, you need to be innovative. Innovation need not necessarily be only in products but also in the production process, marketing of products or services, or management. In the past few years, India has given a lot of importance to entrepreneurship development; hence, we find that over a period, the number of women entrepreneurs has increased. Some women are first-generation women entrepreneurs who started their businesses from scratch. As they are the New Generation Entrepreneurs, they face many problems at the initial stage of their start-up. Looking at the present competitive market, if these ‘First Generation Women Entrepreneurs’ want to survive, they need to be innovative in their business. In this paper, the researcher has found out that women entrepreneurs lack an understanding of the concept of innovation; they believe that whatever business they are doing is innovative. When the correlation between an innovative idea and business success achieved by first-generation women entrepreneurs was calculated, it was found that there was a correlation between the 'innovative idea' applied and the 'business success', but the relation was very weak. Key Words: Innovation, First Generation Women Entrepreneurs (FGWE), Business Success

The meaning of innovation in the umrah business process: A qualitative study on umrah travel

This study focuses on examining the integrative factors that determine successful innovations in the business process of Umrah in PT. Umi Muthmainah Berkah Umrah and Hajj Travel are located in Surabaya. The factors examined were technology, regulation, human resource (HR) quality, and pilgrims' trust. The method used was qualitative, with a case study approach and data collection through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. The results showed that while digitized systems bolster operational efficiency and convenience for pilgrims, a far greater hurdle in human resources limits the ability to utilize technology. Travel companies are subject to strict compliance requirements, which necessitate continual adaptation and travel agency innovation. The human resource quality gained through systematic and ongoing training fosters successful innovation, while trust from pilgrims significantly affects business reputation and sustainability. This study affirms the synergistic integration of technology, regulation, human resources, and congregation trust, which constitute the pillars of innovation and umrah business success. The study results suggest directions for management to focus more on the enhancement of technology and human resources, and for the government to formulate pro-innovation policy regulations. This study also encourages the public to be more discerning in selecting a Umrah bureau to receive optimal and more trustworthy services.

Effects of positive psychological capital on entrepreneurial success: A systematic review

Purpose: Psychological resources are key to entrepreneurial performance. Psychological capital is one of the pillars of entrepreneurial success, which has prompted the study of its relationship to entrepreneurial performance. The aim of this study is to contribute to the understanding of the relationship between positive psychological capital and the success of entrepreneurs.Design/methodology: This systematic review used the PRISMA protocol and Review Manager 5.3 software. The articles collected for this research cover the annual period from November 2008 to January 2025 and allow us to identify and analyse the main topics on psychological capital and success in entrepreneurship.Findings: In the systematic review, we identified 9 indicators of success (innovation, subjective performance, growth, revenue, survival, employment generation, retention, organizational change and life satisfaction). Of the 35 articles reviewed, the results indicate that the PsyCap components (resilience, optimism, self-efficacy, and hope) have a positive impact on entrepreneurial success. Resilience is key to subjective performance, growth and revenue. Optimism supports organizational change, performance and growth. Self-efficacy influences innovation, survival and job creation, while hope affects life satisfaction, income and employee retention.Originality/value: This article is original in that it presents the first systematic review linking PsyCap to entrepreneurial success. Although there are previous reviews linking PsyCap to entrepreneurial intention, none have explored its direct connection to success. To understand this concept, we have identified nine key success variables mentioned in the entrepreneurship literature. These variables highlight the importance of certain psychological resources in achieving different indicators of success. This research highlights the relevance of developing these areas, providing scientific evidence of the relationships between them. In this way, it contributes to a more robust understanding of the impact of positive psychological capital on entrepreneurial success and establishes a starting point for future studies on the synergies between the two fields.

A Successful Defence Innovation Ecosystem

The lessons drawn so far from the Russo-Ukrainian War have shown that the failures of set objectives can be traced back not only to the errors of operational planning but also to shortcomings in the deployability of military equipment in given situations. Changeis constant. The quality of (operational or military engineering) responses to the continuously changing situation is a function of the status of the defence innovation ecosystem. Economists, engineers, and doctors are looking to define the concept of innovation differently, based on the ecosystem surrounding them. The defence innovation ecosystem rests on three pillars: the current state of military science, the capabilities of the defence industry, and the defence requirements. Besides these three pillars, the defence innovation ecosystem’s quality is determined by a network of connections among several other elements. What are the elements that need to be operated in the interest of a successful development? What are the connections among these elements? Can one give an exact description of all elements and connections of a defence innovation ecosystem, or does it have some general laws? This study aims to seek the elements of a defence innovation ecosystem required for fighting a successful war through the examination of a successful military technology research and development program: the Hungarian radar developments in the 1940s.

ENHANCING NATIONAL INNOVATION FRAMEWORKS THROUGH OPEN INNOVATION: A THEORETICAL APPROACH TO INTEGRATING OPEN INNOVATION PRINCIPLES INTO THE EUROPEAN INNOVATION SCOREBOARD

Despite the growing prominence of Open Innovation (OI) in business and policy, National Innovation Metrics (NIM) remain largely rooted in traditional, firm-centric models, failing to capture ecosystem-wide collaboration and knowledge exchange This study critically examines how OI is integrated - or overlooked - within major Innovation Measurement Frameworks (IMF), particularly the European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS), Global Innovation Index (GII), and Bloomberg Innovation Index (BII). Findings reveal that existing innovation scoreboards prioritize input-output indicators (e.g., R&D expenditure, patenting) while neglecting systemic, network-driven innovation dynamics. The continued absence of OI-specific metrics reinforces a "black box" effect, where national innovation success is assessed without visibility into knowledge flows and collaborative innovation mechanisms. This study contributes to rethinking NIM by advocating for a shift from closed-system assessments to dynamic, network-based measurement models. By bridging innovation policy, measurement theory, and OI research, it provides a foundation for future empirical studies on integrating OI indicators into national benchmarking frameworks, ensuring more accurate assessments of Innovation Ecosystem (IE) performance.

Grassroots Learning and Innovation in Award-Winning Agrotourism Community Enterprises in Thailand

Innovative success in community-based agritourism often hinges not only on creative ideas but also on how community members learn, share knowledge, and build entrepreneurial capacity. This qualitative study investigates 11 award-winning Agrotourism Community Enterprises (ACEs) across Thailand, focusing on the educational processes that underpin their innovative practices. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, site observations, and document analysis, emphasizing nonformal and informal entrepreneurship education—such as community-based knowledge sharing, experiential learning-by-doing, and local mentorship. The findings reveal that these ACEs engage in a rich tapestry of grassroots learning activities: farmers and community entrepreneurs learn experientially through running homestays and farm tours, informally mentor one another in developing new products, and participate in nonformal training workshops facilitated by government extension programs and NGOs. These learning processes have enabled continuous innovation, from cultural heritage tourism and organic farming techniques to sustainable resource management and human resource development initiatives. Drawing on experiential learning theory (Kolb), community-based learning principles, and transformative learning theory, the discussion illustrates how iterative cycles of experience and reflection lead to new entrepreneurial ideas, how shared learning in the community fosters collective innovation capacity, and how these processes transform individuals and empower communities. The ACEs’ innovations are thus not only economic or environmental but deeply educational—strengthening entrepreneurial capacity, sustaining innovation, and fostering community empowerment from within. The study contributes to understanding how nonformal and informal education in rural communities can drive sustainable entrepreneurship. It concludes with recommendations for integrating experiential and community-based learning in rural enterprise development policies.

Developing and implementing a new health information technology innovation to improve patient safety in the Canadian context.

Adverse Drug Events (ADEs) are unintended and harmful events related to medication use. Many ADEs recur because patients are unintentionally re-exposed to medications that previously caused harm. To help address this, we designed ActionADE, an interoperable Health Information Technology (HIT) that allows clinicians to communicate ADEs across health sectors. We completed ethnographic workplace observations and a systematic review to inform design. After piloting, we integrated ActionADE with the provincial medication dispensing database to alert pharmacists when patients seek to fill a prescription for the same or a same-class drug as one that previously caused harm. Co-design, application of clinically meaningful field labels and data standards, and integration with other health information systems were critical to ActionADE's functionality and use. However, health system decision-makers need to proactively plan for how to spread and scale pilot project in the HIT ecosystem to ensure public benefit from successful innovation.

From Internet to Artificial Intelligence (Al) Bots: Symbiotic Evolutions of Digital Technologies and e-Patients

This paper will view the rise of the e-patient, who is “equipped, enabled, empowered, and engaged” through the lens of the evolution of successive digital technology innovations, each building on its predecessors, creating new tools for patient empowerment. We begin with the dawn of the web and the proliferation of health websites and discuss the use of digital communication tools. We then discuss the adoption of electronic health records, which enabled the rise of patient portals. This digitization of health data, along with the rapid adoption of mobile internet access and the proliferation of health-related smartphone apps, in turn, provided a platform for patients to coproduce health care by contributing their own health data to their self-care and health care. The exchange of health information between patients and providers has also been facilitated by telehealth or telemedicine technology, which enables direct care delivery. The use of social networks in health, in use since the early days of the web, has expanded since COVID-19, when public health authorities worldwide, as well as patients, sought the use of social media channels to get connected and share information. Most recently, artificial intelligence and large language models have emerged with yet untapped potential to provide patients with the information that could improve their understanding of their conditions and treatment options. We conclude that innovations in digital health technology have symbiotically evolved with the ascendance of the e-patient, enabling improved communication, collaboration, and coordination between patients and clinicians and forging a health care system that is safer and more responsive to patient needs.
