In-Vitro Investigation of the Shear Bond Strength of Different Orthodontic Adhesives to Enamel

ABSTRACT Background: The shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic adhesives to enamel is a critical factor in the success of orthodontic treatment. Various adhesives are available in the market, each with different trade names and claimed properties that could influence their bond strength. Understanding these differences is essential for clinical decision-making. Materials and Methods: In this in-vitro study, 60 freshly extracted human premolars were collected and randomly divided into four groups: Group A (Adhesive X—Trade Name: BondPlus), Group B (Adhesive Y—Trade Name: OrthoBond), Group C (Adhesive Z—Trade Name: PowerBond), and Group D (Control). The enamel surfaces were cleaned, polished, and etched following standard protocols. Orthodontic brackets were bonded to the teeth using the respective adhesives according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A universal testing machine was employed to measure the SBS, and the data were analyzed using ANOVA with post-hoc tests. Results: The mean SBS values (MPa) were as follows: Group A = 15.2, Group B = 14.8, Group C = 16.5, and Group D (Control) =10.3. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences among the groups (P < 0.05). Post-hoc tests indicated that Group C exhibited significantly higher SBS compared to the other groups. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that among the orthodontic adhesives tested, PowerBond demonstrated superior shear bond strength to the enamel. However, further research is warranted to explore other aspects of adhesive performance and clinical implications.

Surface Treatment of Dental Mini-Sized Implants and Screws: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis.

Miniscrews are devices that allow for absolute skeletal anchorage. However, their use has a higher failure rate (10-30%) than dental implants (10%). To overcome these flaws, chemical and/or mechanical treatment of the surface of miniscrews has been suggested. There is no consensus in the current literature about which of these methods is the gold standard; thus, our objective was to carry out a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature on surface treatments of miniscrews. The review protocol was registered (PROSPERO CRD42023408011) and is in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. A bibliographic search was carried out on PubMed via MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Embase and Web of Science. The initial search of the databases yielded 1684 results, with 98 studies included in the review, with one article originating from the search in the bibliographic references of the included studies. The results of this systematic review show that the protocols of miniscrew surface treatments, such as acid-etching; sandblasting, large-grit and acid-etching; photofunctionalization with ultraviolet light; and photobiomodulation, can increase stability and the success of orthodontic treatment. The meta-analysis revealed that the treatment with the highest removal torque is SLA, followed by acid-etching. On the other hand, techniques such as oxidative anodization, anodization with pre-calcification and heat treatment, as well as deposition of chemical compounds, require further investigation to confirm their effectiveness.

Multidisciplinary Relationship between Periodontology and Orthodontic Department: A Clinical Audit Study

Objectives: This study aims to assess the current practice among postgraduate students in the multidisciplinary interaction between the Periodontology and Orthodontic Departments in the Faculty of Dentistry, UiTM Sungai Buloh; we conducted clinical audit research. Material and methods: Data retrieval from the Integrated Dental Record Management System (iDeRMS) was used to conduct our clinical audit. Results: After receiving orthodontic treatment, 25% of the referral cases, according to our study, needed non-surgical periodontal therapy. Additionally, we discovered that 16.7% of patients required surgical periodontal treatment after being sent for orthodontic care. Conclusion: A multidisciplinary approach might be necessary to successfully treat periodontal disease. As periodontal therapy is a requirement for the success of orthodontic treatment, and orthodontic treatment contributes to preserving periodontal health, a reciprocal link between the two specialities is essential.

Resorptions and orthodontics

It's generally accepted that one of the risks associated with orthodontic treatment is apical root resorption, even though this may occur outside orthodontic treatment. In any case, it causes root shortening. Orthodontists are probably the only dental surgeons who use the inflammatory process as a therapeutic tool. They need to be aware of the risk factors for root inflammation. Along with recurrence, leukemia and periodontal problems, resorption is one of the "inconveniences" of orthodontics, which, if not inevitable, must at least be minimized. At present, the orthodontic literature on root resorption provides some clues as to the factors associated with the onset, severity and management of root resorption, although the complexity of this phenomenon does not allow us to arrive at a clear and unequivocal consensus. For this reason, it is important to identify potential risk factors for resorption, to take them into account before/during and after treatment, and to know what attitude to adopt in the event of resorption appearing, all in order to minimize this phenomenon, as everyone agrees that it can be a source of harm and stress for both patient and practitioner. There are still many grey areas in our understanding of the phenomenon, including how the elements of orthodontic treatment influence orthodontic resorption. Irreversible in nature, resorption can be sufficiently extensive to cast doubt on the benefit of successful orthodontic treatment.

Forced eruption in impacted teeth: analysis of failed cases and outcome of re-operation

BackgroundForced eruption of an impacted tooth usually requires surgical and orthodontic interventions to successfully bring the tooth into the dental arch. The clinical time required for a forced eruption is difficult to predict before treatment begins and success rates are affected by several factors before and after an eruption. This study was conducted to identify factors that affect the success of forced eruption, the duration of orthodontic treatment of impacted teeth, and the reasons for re-operation and forced eruption failure in a various teeth and cases.MethodsIn this retrospective study, the records regarding the forced eruption of 468 teeth in 371 patients from June 2006 to May 2020 at the Advanced General Dentistry Department of Yonsei University Dental Hospital were initially examined. The records of 214 teeth in 178 patients who completed orthodontic treatment were included in the analysis. Data on patient demographics, tooth characteristics, orthodontic treatment duration, re-operations, and failures were collected from electronic medical records.ResultsThere was a significant difference in age between the success and failure forced eruption. Factors significantly affecting treatment duration were apex formation, position, rotation, and re-operation. Re-operation had a 96% success rate. The average orthodontic treatment duration was 29.99 ± 16.93 months, but the average orthodontic treatment duration for teeth that undergone re-operation was 20.36 ± 11.05 months, which was approximately 9 months shorter. Additionally, there was an interaction effect between rotation and re-operation on the duration of orthodontic treatment. The causes for failure of forced eruption in 6 cases were ankyloses (3 cases), incomplete alignment with the normal dental arch (2 cases), and a significant deviation in the impacted tooth’s location (1 case).ConclusionsTo increase the success rate of forced eruption, age should be considered as a priority, and in order to predict the treatment period, the apex formation status, position in the arch, and rotation should be considered in addition to age. When determining re-operation, considering factors such as ankylosis, root curvature, and apex formation can help in the success of orthodontic treatment.

The Use of Lasers in Enhancing the Bond Strength of Orthodontic Brackets

ABSTRACT Background: The use of lasers in orthodontics has garnered interest for its potential to enhance the bond strength between orthodontic brackets and tooth surfaces, a crucial factor for successful orthodontic treatment. This study aims to investigate the effect of laser irradiation on the bond strength of orthodontic brackets in a sample of 30 patients. Materials and Methods: Thirty patients undergoing orthodontic treatment were divided into two groups. In Group A, brackets were bonded using conventional methods, while in Group B, brackets were bonded after laser irradiation. A diode laser operating at 810 nm was used, with an energy setting of 2.5 W for 20 s. After bonding, a universal testing machine measured the bond strength in megapascals (MPa). The adhesive remnant index (ARI) was also recorded to determine the mode of bond failure. Statistical analyses were conducted to compare the results between the groups. Results: The mean bond strength in Group B (laser irradiation) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than in Group A (conventional bonding). Group B exhibited a mean bond strength of 9.72 MPa, whereas Group A showed a mean bond strength of 7.41 MPa. The ARI scores indicated that Group B had more adhesive remaining on the tooth surface, suggesting a stronger bond. Conclusion: Laser irradiation prior to orthodontic bracket bonding resulted in significantly enhanced bond strength compared to conventional bonding methods. The increased bond strength and greater adhesive remnant on the tooth surface indicate that laser irradiation improves the adhesion between brackets and tooth enamel. Integrating lasers into orthodontic procedures has the potential to elevate treatment outcomes by ensuring durable bracket adhesion.

The Effect of Force Application on the Stability of Mini-Screw in Different Insertion Angles (An in-vitro Study).

Background and Objective: The stability of the mini-screw is an important factor for the success of orthodontic treatment using an absolute anchorage system. This study aims to evaluate the ideal insertion angle of a mini-implant in relation to force direction and to evaluate the maximum amount of force application at a specific angular configuration. Method: In this experimental study 72 mini-screws were used, 36 of them were used for each shear and tensile force tests, eighteen samples were taken for the bone density D2 (nine for 60 degree angle, and nine for 90 degree angle), and 18 others were taken for the bone density D3 (nine for 60 degree angle, and nine for 90 degree angle). Guiding stents were fabricated for proper insertion angle, torque and speed were controlled by contra -angled handpiece. Shear and tensile force tests are done with the aid of a Universal Testing Machine. Results: Mini-implants inserted at 90 degree angle over D2 density bone had higher stability when performing the tensile force test, while in the shear force test mini-implants placed at 60 degree angle were more stable when inserted on bony blocks with D3 density, however it was noted that the results were statistically not significant when compared with 60 degree insertion on blocks with D2 density. Conclusion: To maintain a stable mini-implant during the orthodontic process, the ideal insertion angle is 90 degree when the force direction is vertical, tensile force, and its more appropriate to place the mini-implant at 60 degree angle when the direction of force is in a horizontal direction, shear force.  Background: Removable orthodontic appliance is one of the solutions of malocclusion problems in Indonesia. This appliance can treat mild to moderate dental malocclusion, such as Class I Angle, and can be removed by patients under the supervision of a dentist. Assessment of the success rate of removable orthodontic treatment can be performed using intermolar and inter dm2 distance measurements with anterior crowding correction. Objective: To determine orthodontic treatment success rate using removable appliance based on intermolar and inter dm2 distance measurement with anterior crowding correction in children aged 7-10 years at RSGM-P Trisakti University 2017-2019. Methods: The study was observational analytic to perform measurements of anterior crowding, intermolar, and inter dm2 distance on 26 pairs of the study model were selected using a random sampling method. Results: 19 patients have an increase in width at intermolar distance maxillary parameter and 22 patients at the mandibular (range 0.5 - 7 mm). 24 patients have an increase in width at inter dm2 distance maxillary parameter and 23 patients at mandibular (range 0.5 - 4 mm). All patients have an intermolar distance that exceeds the Pont prediction before orthodontic treatment. Conclusion: There were significant differences in maxillary and mandibular intermolar and inter dm2 distance parameters measurement of the study model before and after orthodontic treatment (p <0.05). There was no significant difference in anterior crowding parameter measurement of the study model before and after orthodontic treatment (p> 0.05).

Class III orthodontic camouflage: A case of non-growing patient using conventional appliances

This case report details the successful orthodontic camouflage treatment of a 21-year-old female with Angle's Class III malocclusion, characterized by skeletal and dental features. The patient opted against orthognathic surgery and, instead, underwent mandibular first premolar extraction for camouflage treatment. The case highlights the careful consideration of treatment options, including the decision to maintain a Class III molar relationship. The treatment achieved satisfactory results in skeletal, dental, and soft tissue aspects, demonstrating the viability of camouflage treatment for mild to moderate Class III malocclusions. The absence of established guidelines underscores the importance of personalized treatment planning for such cases.

Orthodontic treatment and biological limits: a retrospective clinical trial

BackgroundThe fundamental part of every successful orthodontic treatment is the detailed treatment planning including a precise determination of the virtual treatment objective (VTO) while considering the biological and anatomical limits. The aim of this study is to investigate and to compare the feasibility of the established reference values before and after orthodontic treatment and to determine the usefulness of this parameters as guidance for the sagittal anterior, sagittal posterior and transverse biological boundaries.Materials and methodsThirty-two patients aged 9 to 18 years (12 male and 20 female) with all permanent teeth present were randomly selected for orthodontic treatment with fixed multibracket appliance regardless of the potential malocclusion. The parameters 6-PTV, 1-NB [mm] and the WALA ridge were set for the identification of the transverse, sagittal anterior and sagittal posterior tooth position. The measurements were carried out at the beginning (T0) and at the end (T1) of the orthodontic treatment. They were set in relation with their individual threshold values (G). After the results of the measurements were conducted using the software OnyxCeph3TM (version 3.2.185 (505), Image Instruments GmbH, Chemnitz, DE), they were statistically calculated in the software RStudio (2022.12.0 Build 353 © 2009–2022 Posit Software PBC).ResultsAmong the 32 patients, the mean pre- and post-treatment changes measured through the three parameters in relation to the individual reference values were statistically significant (p < 0.01). The mean values for 6-PTV, 1-NB and the WALA ridge amounted 15.37 mm, 2.56 mm and 4.23 mm at the beginning of the treatment, while after the treatment the measured values amounted 20.31 mm, 2.4 mm and 5.55 mm. These measurements combined with the statistical analysis of the changes of WALA ridge (T0, T1) confirmed that the teeth have been successfully uprighted and aligned. Furthermore, the maxillary first molars have been moved slightly mesially, as proven by the changes in 6-PTV, without certainty as to whether bodily movement or mesial tipping took place. Additionally, the lower incisors have been protruded, slightly exceeding the individual threshold values.ConclusionThe parameters investigated provide a suitable assessment tool for recording the limits of the sagittal posterior, the sagittal anterior and the transverse dimension.

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Impact of Cancer and Its Treatment Protocol on the Success of Orthodontic Treatment.

There are several significant gaps in current studies of the relationship between anti-cancer medications and orthodontic care that call for more investigation. As a result, the main goals of this systematic review and meta-analysis were to summarise and assess the information that was available regarding the effect of radiotherapy and anti-cancer medications on the overall successful completion of an orthodontic treatment plan. A standardised data extraction form was devised in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis, with specific criteria implemented for selecting studies with low to moderate risk of bias. Five studies involving different methodologies were selected at the conclusion of the search strategy. The statistical analysis revealed an estimated odds ratio (OR) of 0.31 and relative risk (RR) of 0.48, indicating a statistically significant association between the use of radiotherapy and anti-neoplastic drugs and a noticeable reduction in the successful completion of orthodontic treatment. The heterogeneity analysis showed significant heterogeneity among the studies. This review emphasises that, although orthodontic therapies can still be beneficial for children receiving chemotherapy, the effectiveness of the therapy may be diminished in older populations. The findings further highlight how crucial it is to take cancer therapies into account when planning and managing orthodontic treatment in order to optimise results and reduce problems.

The Orthodontic Mini-Implants Failures Based on Patient Outcomes: Systematic Review.

Anchorage is a challenge and essential issue for an orthodontist in determining the success of orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic anchorage is defined as resistance to unwanted tooth movement. Mini-implant is one of the devices that can be used as an anchor in orthodontic treatment. Many cases have reported successful treatment using mini-implant, but there are cases where mini-implants may fail. Failure of mini-implants can affect orthodontic treatment, and it is known that several factors may lead to mini-implant loss in orthodontic treatment. This systematic review aimed to determine the factors influencing mini-implant failure in orthodontic treatment. Articles were selected from electronic databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, The Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect) from January 2015 until 2023 according to the PRISMA method (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) under the PEOS (Population-Exposure-Outcome-StudyType) framework questions for systematic review. The study was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) database (CRD42022337684). All data collected were in English, and filtering was done by eliminating duplicate data, meta-analysis, case reports, case series, mini-reviews, and animal studies. The analysis was further divided into three groups, that is, patient-related, implant-related, and operator-related and operator-related (A graphical abstract provided as a Supplementary information [available in the online version]). Twenty-one articles were identified according to the inclusion criteria in the form of retrospective, prospective, in vivo, and randomized controlled trial studies. Mini-implant failures due to patient-related showed six etiological factors, failures due to implant-related had eight etiological factors, and only one factor was operator-related, which may lead to mini-implant failure. The data was extracted without a computerized system and only in English. Mini-implant failure can be caused by many factors; we could not accuse one major factor as a cause. However, the quality or condition of the bones and oral hygiene are factors that play a significant role in obtaining the stability of implants. Mini-implant failure is highly influenced by poor oral hygiene and peri-implant inflammation. Comprehensive diagnostic prior to mini-implant insertion should be appropriately considered. Comparative Evaluation Of Bond Failure Rate Of Orthodontic Brackets Bonded With Resin Modified Glass Ionomer Cement And Composite- A Randomized Control Trial

Introduction: Successful orthodontic treatment depends on the adhesive used for bonding orthodontic brackets and patient cooperation. Resin based adhesives are conventionally used but have drawbacks like white spot lesions and technique sensitivity. To overcome these problems, Resin modified glass ionomer cements (RMGIC) were introduced to utilise the fluoride releasing characteristic of GIC. Aim: To compare and evaluate bond failure rate and type of bond failure between brackets bonded with RMGIC and composite. Materials and methods: 25 patients undergoing orthodontic treatment were included and evaluated for 6 months. Bonding was done with RMGIC and composite. Patients were recalled every month and bond failure rate and type of bond failure was evaluated. Results: A total of 526 teeth were bonded out of which 263 were bonded with RMGIC and 263 with composite. Statistical analysis was done with Chi-square test (p&gt;0.05). Maximum debonding was seen in RMGIC group (6.46%) compared to composite (3.42%). Maximum debonding was seen in 1st molars bonded with RMGIC (35.3%). Majority bond failure type observed was Adhesive enamel failure in brackets bonded with RMGIC. Conclusion: From the study, it can be concluded that bond failure was commonly seen in RMGIC group in comparison with composite group. Adhesive enamel failure was the most commonly seen bracket failure type. RMGIC had majority bracket failure but within acceptable range and hence can be used as a substitute adhesive for bonding.

Orthodontic Management of Severe Hypodontia and Impacted Maxillary Second Molars in a Patient with Sotos Syndrome.

Sotos syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by distinct craniofacial features, overgrowth in childhood, and impaired intellectual development. We herein report the successful orthodontic treatment of a 14-year-old boy with Sotos syndrome caused by a heterozygous mutation in the NSD1 gene. He showed severe hypodontia, impaction of the maxillary second molars and a skeletal Class III jaw-base relationship. Orthodontic management, including space control by protraction of the maxillary first molars and traction of the impacted molars, was performed using fixed appliances and miniscrews. As a result, acceptable occlusion was obtained without any discernible relapse 18 months postretention.

Effect of chlorhexidine mouthwashes on periodontal parameters and extrinsic tooth staining in orthodontic patients

Periodontal health and biofilm control are primordial to success in orthodontic treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwashes on periodontal status and extrinsic tooth staining in orthodontic patients. Thirty-three patients of both sexes, aged 11-33 years, under orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances at<16 months, were randomly distributed into 2 groups. In the control group, patients received mechanical hygiene instruction, and in the experimental group, patients also used CHX wash twice a week for 60 days. The effectivity of the protocols was evaluated using the plaque, gingival, gingival bleeding, and discoloration indexes before the hygiene protocol was applied, 15, 30, and 60 days after protocol implementation. In the experimental group, there was a decrease in the plaque, gingival, and gingival bleeding indexes at the different evaluation periods (P<0.05). In addition, there was a significant difference in the discoloration index at 60 days compared with initial time points after implementing hygiene protocols in the experimental group (P<0.05). In contrast, there were no significant differences in plaque, gingival, gingival bleeding, and discoloration indexes in the control group at any time (P>0.05). CHX mouthwash administered 30 days, twice a week, significantly improved the periodontal status with mild brown staining. After this period, expressive extrinsic tooth staining was observed.

Success of orthodontic treatment of linguoverted mandibular canine teeth using a direct inclined plane appliance.

This study evaluated the success rate of orthodontic treatment of linguoverted mandibular canines in dogs using a directly applied inclined plane device. Medical records were retrospectively evaluated at 11 veterinary dental specialty hospitals from 1999 to 2021. Malocclusion classes included 41.7% in class 1, 47.2% in class 2, 6.9% in class 3, and 4.2% in class 4. The severity of linguoversion was mild in 7.6% of teeth, moderate in 33.9%, and severe in 58.5%. There was complete resolution of linguoversion in 71.2% of teeth, functional resolution in 25.4%, and failure in 3.4%. The median treatment time was 42 (11-174) days. Adjuvant orthodontic treatments were performed at the same time as the inclined plane in 45.7% of teeth, including active force orthodontics, extractions of non-strategic teeth, gingivectomy, and odontoplasty. While the inclined plane was in place, 31.4% of dogs required an anesthetized appliance adjustment, and at the time of appliance removal, complications occurred in 19.4% of dogs. Of the teeth that had initial resolution, 14.4% had rebound movement that required additional treatment. This study supports the idea that an acrylic inclined plane is a good treatment option for linguoverted mandibular canines, with a 96.6% success rate within a median of 6 weeks. Yet, orthodontic retention may be necessary in these cases to avoid the need for additional therapies.

Comparison of infrazygomatic crest bone screw position using a postero-anterior cephalogram versus cone-beam computed tomography: a cross sectional study

Abstract Background The position of infrazygomatic crest bone screws is an important consideration in determining the success of orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to compare the position of infrazygomatic crest (IZC) bone screws in relation to skeletal and dental parameters using postero-anterior (PA) cephalograms and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods A CBCT scan and a PA cephalogram were taken of 19 patients (8 males; 11 females) after IZC bone screw placement. Each CBCT image was reconstructed and oriented using the CS 3D CBCT software (Carestream Dental LLC, Atlanta, USA) and was subsequently analysed. The landmarks were traced on the PA cephalogram. The angulation of the IZC bone screw was measured with respect to three skeletal and two dental landmarks and compared between the two imaging modalities. A paired t-test was applied to compare the means of different variables between the PA cephalogram and CBCT scan. Results The results showed no statistically significant difference between the two imaging modalities with respect to four landmarks, i.e., the inter-jugale plane, the mid sagittal plane, the zygomatic arch and the perpendicular long axis to the 1st molar but a small statistically significant difference was seen with respect to measurements from the facial surface of the 1st molar (P ≤ 0.05). Conclusion The angulation and position of an IZC bone screw are consistent between the two imaging modalities. A PA cephalogram may be used as a substitute for a CBCT scan to reduce the radiation exposure to patients.

Three Dimensional Evaluation of Accuracy of Bracket Positioning.

The success of orthodontic treatment depends on accurate bracket placement, so researchers are constantly exploring new direct and indirect bonding methods with the help of cutting-edge imaging technologies like cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), which provides full three-dimensional visualization of tissues down to the root of the tooth. The primary goals of this analysis are to determine the degree of section angulation and adhesive thickness, as well as the accuracy of the vertical and flat section positions. The correlation between total clinical crown height, minor edge to focus of section, and minimum edge to complete curve crown length is one of several possible goals of this investigation (FACC). Currently, 10 patients aged 15-30 who needed fixed appliance treatment were enrolled in an in vivo research conducted by the orthodontics department. Cases with and without extractions of the crooked teeth were counted. Full mouth analysis is being used in this investigation. Ten patients were selected at random and placed in either Group A (the study group) or Group B (the control group) (control group). Group A bonds are more indirect, whereas group B bonds are more like "normal" direct bonds. We used a Canon 700D camera, a biocompatible transparent 3D printing resin, and a 3M Gemini MBT.022 in bracket kit for CT scanning and imaging. Brackets are placed by experienced orthodontists in both treatment groups. There is a statistically significant (P 0.05) difference between the indirect and direct bonding group when all five factors are taken into account, with the indirect bonding group demonstrating superiority in terms of accuracy. The results of the current investigation support the premise that there is a clinically significant difference between direct bonding and 3D indirect bonding in terms of bracket placement accuracy.

Comparative Evaluation Of The Shear Bond Strength Of Two Different Orthodontic Bonding Agents On Artificial Crown Surfaces: An Invitro Study

INTRODUCTION: Bonding of buccal tubes to the tooth is an essential procedure in orthodontic treatment. With the increase in the number of adult patients seeking fixed orthodontic treatment, there is a need to find a more reliable procedure to bond the artificial crown surface. Successful orthodontic treatment requires sufficiently high and durable bond between buccal tubes and ceramic/zirconia surfaces. There is a need for a bonding agent which can provide maximum bond strength to all surfaces. This study aimed to assess and compare the shear bond strength and adhesive remnants of orthodontic buccal tubes to natural teeth, ceramic crowns and zirconia crowns using two different bonding systems. METHODS: In this in vitro study, 60 extracted human molar teeth were randomly assigned to three groups (n=20) and then divided into two subgroups(n=10). Bonding of buccal tubes to enamel, ceramic and zirconia surfaces was done using Assure plus universal bonding resin and Enhance LC. The shear bond strength of buccal tubes to the enamel, ceramic and zirconia surfaces were determined by universal testing machine. The SBSs and ARI scores were statistically analysed with and Kruskal Wallis test. RESULTS: The mean shear bond strength of buccal tubes to enamel, ceramic and zirconia surfaces bonded with Assure plus and Enhance LC was highest for enamel followed by zirconia surfaces respectively. Non-parametric Kruskal-Walli’s test found significant differences regarding the shear bond strength and adhesive remnant index (ARI). CONCLUSION: Bonding of buccal tubes to enamel, zirconia, and ceramic surfaces with Assure universal bonding resin and Enhance LC provided adequate bond strength. Thus, it may be used for bonding of orthodontic buccal tubes to the artificial crown surfaces in the clinical setting.

Evaluation of Orthodontic Treatment Success in Terms of Symmetry in Patients with Class III Malocclusion after Maxillary Expansion and Protraction

Background: Facial asymmetries are common in patients with skeletal class III malocclusion and posterior crossbite. Maxillary expansion and protraction (ME&P) and then fixed orthodontic treatment may affect positively on these asymmetries. Objectives: We aimed to investigate the effects of applying ME&P by the rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and face mask and then fixed orthodontic treatment on soft tissue asymmetries in adolescent patients with skeletal class III malocclusion and posterior crossbite. For this purpose, the 3D facial imaging system of stereophotogrammetric (3dMD) recordings was analyzed quantitatively in the pre-treatment (T0), ME&P (T1), and post-fixed orthodontic treatment periods (T2). Materials and methods: The study included 28 (11 females, 17 males) individuals with skeletal class III malocclusion and posterior cross-bite (5 patients with bilateral and 23 patients with unilateral cross-bite) and soft tissue facial convexity angle of 175.11º±1.06º with a mean age of 9.37 ± 0.54 years. Three-dimensional photographs were taken from the individuals before the ME&P (T0), 6 months after the ME&P procedure and before starting fixed orthodontic treatment (T1), and after removing all orthodontic appliances from the mouth at the end of the fixed orthodontic treatment (T2). 3dMD Vultus® software was used to evaluate the data of 34 linear and 16 volumetric as a total of 50 measurements in soft tissue analysis. Results: The right-left volume differences, the Root Mean Square (RMS) values, and linear width measurements in the upper, mid, and lower face regions when evaluated at the T1-T0, T2-T1, and T2-T0 period intervals, were found to a decrease in these values and improvement of asymmetry. Conclusion: The asymmetry in the soft tissue in all face regions was corrected with ME&P and fixed orthodontic treatment. The most obvious asymmetry improvement occurs in the lower face area. It should be taken into consideration that asymmetry will improve with RME and face mask application and fixed orthodontic treatment in adolescents with Class III malocclusion and posterior cross-bite and treatment planning should be done according to that.
