Applications of existing and emerging construction safety technologies

Safety is one of the most important success factors in construction projects. Many advanced technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, construction robotics, and digital technologies, have been increasingly implemented to support safety activities on construction sites and improve workers' health. The objective of this paper is to investigate applications of existing and emerging construction safety technologies across different construction safety areas. A systematic review methodology was conducted to analyze 129 journal articles published from 2018 to 2023 related to construction safety technologies. The results of this study include a detailed categorization of advanced technologies in four construction safety categories: prevention through design, safety management, safety culture and awareness, and computing in construction safety. Additionally, a checklist of recommended technologies for specific construction safety improvement areas was developed. This study contributes to the body of knowledge by systematically categorizing and specifying the commonly used advanced technologies to address various construction safety problems.

Identifying critical success factors for construction projects in Saudi Arabia

The construction projects of process industry plants are complex due to the involvement of numerous stakeholders and uncertainty in environmental factors. The internal and external factors affecting the successful execution of the projects vary across industries and countries. It is vital to identify the critical factors for a geographic region and devise the appropriate strategies for the successful execution of the projects. This study aims to identify the critical success factors for construction projects in Saudi Arabia. To achieve the objective, data collected through questionnaire surveys from 342 project managers, directors, engineers, staff, and construction directors were analyzed in SPSS. The findings showed that construction industry projects in Saudi Arabia are usually constrained by five major factors including the project manager’s qualification and experience, project management practices, timely availability of skilled manpower and equipment, clarity of project definition and scope, and weather conditions, The findings imply that Saudi construction firms need to recruit professionally qualified project managers, establish project management office (PMO), revisit supply chain strategies, and provide alternate working hours during tough weather conditions. Further implications, recommendations, and future research directions are discussed in the end.

Project success and critical success factors of construction projects: project practitioners’ perspectives

Abstract Project management is primarily practitioner-oriented and loaded with many critical success factors (CSFs), and although these are well-evidenced in theory, they do not deliver as efficiently as factors of interest to project professionals during execution. The present study explores the perceptions of senior project managers (PMs) about project success, CSFs and complexity in large construction projects. Data from project practitioners were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using content analysis. The participants were selected with convenience sampling method given the complex understanding of the domain and included highly experienced PMs from the global community with expertise in project management. PMs perceive a small number of CSFs in contrast to the large exhaustive CSFs listed in the questionnaire surveys. Though important, traditional constraints of the Iron Triangle are considered inadequate in defining project success. Project professionals are seen as relying more on other performance indicators for defining a project as a success. They perceive complex construction projects in terms of a large number of interfaces, complex working systems and uncertainty. The findings of this paper suggest that project practitioners perceive differently about the CSFs and project success.

Critical success factors of construction projects in Jordan: an empirical investigation

The construction sector is considered one of the most important engines of the national economy in any country; in addition to that, it clearly contributes to improving the quality of life of individuals. In the construction industry, project success is crucial, because it reflects positively on the growth of the national economy, in partnership with other sectors related to it directly and indirectly. However, construction projects often come with disappointment in completion within time, cost, and quality, for multiple reasons throughout the project life cycle. The aim of this study is to determine the factors that affect the success of construction projects, based on realistic project data. To achieve this goal, data were collected and analyzed from the final reports of a number of projects that had been implemented in 15 years. The result illustrates that the most significant and vital factors for the success of the construction project are: quality-related factors, cost-related factors, time-related factors, contract-related factors, and related external factors. Results help project stakeholders improve construction project performance by identifying factors that have affected project success. This allows them to take appropriate measures for every worker to ensure the success of their projects. In addition, this study contributes to the current body of knowledge by being one of the few studies that analyze project data to identify critical success factors for construction projects in developing countries.

An assessment of Key Success Factors for Construction Projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The success of the Government's construction projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since 2011 has been anchored on the potential of construction firms in completing these projects based on the planned timeframe as well as the budget. Consequently, from a project management viewpoint, the main objective of the present study was to assess the critical success factors in developing countries' construction projects and to examine the impact of risk management, leadership, experience and expertise, and project size on construction projects in DRC. Data was gathered from respondents in the construction projects in DRC using quantitative methods. A statistical software program, SPSS version 25, was subsequently used to analyze the collected quantitative data. The findings emanating from this study contribute to the body of knowledge on key success factors in construction projects in DRC as a developing country. It was revealed from the study that the success of construction projects in DRC could be boosted through effective and efficient risk management. In addition, effective and efficient leadership mainly transactional leadership would affect construction project success. Further, the more the experience and expertise of construction project staff, the more likely the project success criteria would be met, and the more likely the project would be successful. And lastly, smaller-sized and medium-sized construction projects may be more successful, whereas mega projects may not be very successful due to insufficient and limited experience and expertise.

New success factors for construction projects: a systematic review of post-2004 literature

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to elicit the success factors from empirical evidence, as construction industry requires an improved understanding of factors for managing projects to positive outcomes. Increased stakeholder involvement, including the new technologies, achieving sustainability and safeguarding health and safety, whilst at the same time facing uncertainties, it is crucial to examine whether there are new factors that drive construction projects to succeed, especially from a value-driven perspective.Design/methodology/approachUsing a systematic review approach, this research reviewed 172 studies published after 2004. When compared to a comprehensive project success factor framework presented by Chan et al. in 2004, 19 factors are considered new since 2004.FindingsThough several scholarly outputs highlighted significant improvements to project operations and innovations in equipment and techniques, there has not been a comprehensive oversight since Chan’s et al. (2004) conceptual framework. This paper investigates 16 years of industry changes and identified two new success factors categories (innovation and sustainability) and 19 new factors that add to Chan’s et al. (2004) study. Consequently, a new framework of factors affecting project success was developed.Originality/valueThis paper was very specific in its attempt to find the new and additional success factors for managing construction projects. A new conceptual framework, which includes the newly identified factors, was then developed that will create a greater awareness of stakeholders’ concerns and ultimately contribute to significant improvement in developing project objectives and defining success measures.

Success Factors Affecting Public Projects of Construction Industry in Pakistan

The global enhancement in the construction of megaprojects during the last few decades has triggered competition in project management. Achieving successful completion of projects is the fundamental need that requires understanding the critical factors that govern the productive accomplishment of tasks within due time and budget, simultaneously maintaining the quality and safety standards. Besides, the cost, time and quality, health& safety and environmental issues, and efficient project use are equally important factors that need special consideration to complete a project successfully. Several projects have demonstrated different barriers, especially in construction projects in the public sector in developing countries, such as Pakistan. Hence, this study investigated the criteria considered by the practitioners for measuring success in the construction project of Pakistan. A questionnaire survey involved 43 construction practitioners identifying the indicators relevant to measuring the success of Pakistani construction projects. The findings obtained through Statistical analysis (SPSS) and MS Excel revealed that the most common success factors of construction projects are the role of government, client capability, and project management. From a significance point of view, the role of government is reported as the most significant success factor. The government requires to exercise strict policy for getting work done successfully.

An ISM-Based Methodology for Interrelationships of Critical Success Factors for Construction Projects in Ecologically Fragile Regions: Take Korla, China as an Example

Construction activities taken place in ecologically fragile regions (EFRs) of China are facing a series of environmental obstacles. Studying critical success factors (CSFs) to arrive at the sustainable objectives for construction project in EFRs is needed. Understanding the interrelationships of these CSFs is one of the vital ways to achieve this. This paper identifies and analyzes 18 CSFs for construction projects in EFRs through a literature review from a multi-perspective and a case study of Korla City in China. The causal relationship between each CSF is obtained by pairwise comparisons and thereafter, an ISM (Interpretative Structural Modeling) method is employed to study the hierarchical structuring of the CSFs. As a result, we established a five-level ISM. Subsequently, an MICMAC (cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification) approach is implemented to partition and classify each CSF into four quadrants (independent, linkage, autonomous, and dependent) according to their driver and dependence powers. Through the implementation of an MICMAC approach, the degrees of relationship between each CSF is gained. The findings reveal that the studied 18 CSFs have a strong hierarchy and interrelationship. The project manager’s leadership style and economic viability are the root source of project success and has the highest influence, which is supported by the result of MICMAC analysis. CSF planning and implementation of sustainable strategies are more dependent and are influenced by others. The CSFs on the top level of ISM: conflict resolution, planning and implementation of sustainable strategies and resources of water play a significant role in arriving at the project success, and has a great potential for future study. The approaches implemented in this paper can be helpful for decision-makers and managers of construction projects in comprehending the interrelationships and the degrees of CSFs for construction projects in EFRs and for efficiently achieving the project success.

Framework of Socialisation, Authentic Leadership and Affective Commitment for Construction Professionals

This paper highlights the human resources (HR) or behaviour-related success factors in construction projects, and these are training, understanding, co-worker support, future prospects, authentic leadership, and affective commitment. There exists discrepancies in existing literature regarding the factor structure of organisational socialisation and authentic leadership. Therefore, this study aims to explore the factor structure of socialisation, authentic leadership and affective commitment. Data was gathered from 301 newly joined construction professionals and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was conducted to examine the factor structure for organisational socialisation, authentic leadership and affective commitment. A measurement model was further developed using the domains of organisational socialisation, authentic leadership and affective commitment. The results of CFA revealed that there exists four zero-order factor structure for organisational socialisation, and one zero-order factor structure for authentic leadership. The study contributes to both the researcher and practitioner communities by integrating the three constructs and validating the factor structure in the new context (i.e. construction). Further, the study contributes towards improving HR processes, namely, training, reward system, and induction process. It also helps in augmenting the authenticity among the project participants.

Critical Success Factors in Construction Projects

For the successful implementation of the construction projects, researchers have tried to analyze the success factors. In the available literature, there is no clear indication to the success factors that are related to the projects related to construction. Many major construction journals were included to review the project success factors and developed a framework including six groups of independent variables, namely PRF, PMTMRF, PMRF, CLRF, CORF & EF and one dependent variable, i.e., CPS. The main purpose of this research is to test the developed conceptual framework on the CSFs in construction projects. Further the scale is tested for validity and reliability and finally SEM is applied and it is found that CSFs have 70.8% impact on the CPS. And also it is found that PMRF has the maximum impact in the success of construction projects.

Success Factors of Design-Build Public Sector Projects in Malaysia

Various procurement methods are employed in the construction industry, with each having varying success rates. The popularity of design and build (D-B) method has been increasing worldwide because its distinctive features of integrating design and construction have successfully addressed the problems inherent in the traditional design-bid-build (D-B-B) method. Previous research efforts in Malaysia have been focused on establishing a D-B strategy, including its challenges and risks and defining a broader scope for implementing D-B in public projects. However, not many empirical studies have identified the D-B success factors in Malaysia’s construction industry. This paper aims to determine the main factors attributing to the successful application of the D-B method for public projects in Malaysia’s construction industry. Specifically, this paper answers the main research question of “What are the success factors of the D-B project delivery method in Malaysian public-sector projects?”. To achieve that objective, this study involves interviewing industry practitioners that have direct hands-on experience in managing D-B public sector projects in Malaysia. The interview data are analyzed to identify the D-B success factors in construction projects. The findings suggest that the underlying factors for successful D-B public project include client capabilities, competency of the construction leader, competency of the consultant team, organizational behavior, and effective project management system. The success factors in each underlying categories are discussed in the paper. This paper contributes a better understanding of the D-B project success factors in Malaysia’s construction industry.

MANAGEMENT RELATED CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS FOR THE ADMINISTRATION OF BUILDING PROJECTS

The failure of building projects or works is becoming endemic in the global stage, of which Ghana is of no exception. This study identified project manager related critical success factors that affect the success of building projects in Technical Universities in Ghana. Five technical universities were randomly selected for the study. The study selected 120 respondents using a purposive sampling technique. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents. Descriptive data analysis methods such as mean, standard deviation, standard error was used to analyze the data. The analysis revealed that the project manager related critical success factors for construction projects in technical universities in Ghana included: the competence of the project manager; the experience of the project manager; the quality, cost and time commitment of the project manager; the project manager's authority to take decisions; and the leadership skills of the project manager. The conclusion from the study is that project managers play a very crucial role towards the success of building projects in the technical universities in Ghana.

Integrated model of critical success factors of construction projects: A case of Esfahan

Nowadays, the construction managers try to accomplish the projects on time and successful simultaneously. However, the concept of success is not clear in their mind. The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors that effect on project success in the construction field; so, an integrated model of critical success factor for construction projects has been suggested. The proposed model consists of three categories of variables, i.e. people related factors, project related factors, and environmental factors. This model clarifies the definition of success in the mind of construction professionals and develops the critical success factors for construction projects through prior research. The novelty of this research is the comprehensive view of critical success factors in an integrated model format. The model has been tested on construction project managers in Esfahan. Findings show that in Esfahan the success of construction projects depends on people, project, and environment related factors, respectively. This paper clarifies the ambiguous definition of success in the mind of construction professionals.

Risk management to avoid project failure: a comparison study of construction projects in the GCC

This study aims to identify the basic failure and success factors of construction projects in the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries using secondary and qualitative data, articles, journals and case studies to draw some conclusions. The study found that falling oil prices have a significant impact on projects because they affect their financial support and that poor risk management caused delays and cost overruns. Additionally, the lack of a well-established plan or good planning before commencing the project leads to delays and ultimately project failure. Recommendations and conclusions, such as increasing and improving the risk management training necessary to predict and avoid the deeper risks in different projects, are based on the analysis and the understanding of the literature review and case studies. Setting up alternative back-up plans in the event the project fails and PESTEL risk analysis, which focuses on multidimensional factors, should be used.
