First records of moss-feeding aphids (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Aphididae) from Hungary

Four species of moss-feeding aphids were captured by Berlese samples collected in Heves county, NE Hungary. These data are establishing the first Hungarian records of moss-dwelling aphids, all the four species and three genera are reported from the country for the first time. Muscaphis (Aspidaphium) eschirichi (Börner, 1939) was yielded from a colony of Palustriella commutata (Hedw.) Ochyra collected from rock in a karst spring outlet, Muscaphis (Muscaphis) musci Börner, 1933 was yielded from colonies of Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. collected from bark of Quercus pubescens Wild. in an open karst forest, Pseudacaudella rubida (Börner, 1939) was yielded from both of the above mosses, while a Myzodium sp. was yielded from a colony of Hypnum cupressiforme mixed with a single stem of Brachythecium salebrosum (Hoffm. ex F.Weber & D.Mohr) Schimp., collected from bark of dead trunk of Quercus cerris L. in a mixed deciduous forest. All moss species are new host records for the corresponding species. Myzodium sp. explain some distinctive characters different from the only European species of its genus and probably belong to an undescribed species, but we are avoiding of describing it on the basis of the single adult captured. Distinctive morphological and biological characteristics of the Hungarian specimens of the four aphid species are discussed and illustrated. A list of the accompanying taxa yielded from the Berlese samples are listed in a table.

Disentangling the Complex Effects of Seasonal Drought, Floor Mass, and Roots on Soil Microbial Biomass in a Subtropical Moist Forest

Severe seasonal droughts driven by global climate change significantly alter the cycling of carbon and nutrients in forest ecosystems, while the investigation into the impacts of floor mass and plant roots on soil microbial biomass within the context of recurrent seasonal droughts is still rare. To investigate the environmental determinants governing soil microbial biomass with the escalating severity of seasonal droughts, we conducted a study in a montane subtropical moist evergreen broad-leaved forest in southwestern China from June 2019 to May 2023. The study results revealed that soil microbial biomass, as well as soil moisture, floor mass, and plant roots, showed an apparent single-hump modal within one year. In the comparative analysis of the soil microbial biomass fluctuation amplitudes across control and watered plots, a discernible disparity was observed, indicating significant differences in microbial biomass dynamics between the respective experimental conditions. The pooled data revealed a statistically significant influence of seasonal drought, floor mass, plant roots, and their reciprocal interactions on the soil microbial biomass, highlighting these factors as pivotal determinants of microbial community dynamics. This study elucidates the interactive regulatory mechanisms by which seasonal drought, floor mass, and plant roots collectively modulate soil microbial biomass within tropical and subtropical forests, offering insights into the complex ecological processes governing microbial community dynamics. This interactive regulation might influence the trajectory of plant species and soil microbial communities, facilitating their adaptive development and evolutionary responses.

Aridity and forest age mediate landscape scale patterns of tropical forest resistance to cyclonic storms

Abstract Cyclonic storms, or hurricanes, are expected to intensify as ocean heat energy rises due to climate change. Ecological theory suggests that tropical forest resistance to hurricanes should increase with forest age and wood density. However, most data on hurricane effects on tropical forests come from a limited number of well‐studied long‐term monitoring sites, restricting our capacity to evaluate the resistance of tropical forests to hurricanes across broad environmental gradients. In this study, we assessed whether forest age and aridity mediate the effects of hurricanes Irma and Maria in Puerto Rico, Vieques and Culebra islands. We leveraged functional trait data for 410 tree species, remotely sensed measurements of canopy height and cover, along with data on forest stand characteristics of 180 of 338 forest monitoring plots, each covering an area of 0.067 ha. The plots represent a broad mean annual precipitation (MAP) gradient from 701 to 4598 mm and a complex mosaic of forest age from 5 to around 85 years since deforestation. Hurricanes resulted in a 25% increase in basal area mortality rates, a 45% decrease in canopy height and a 21% reduction in canopy cover. These effects intensified with forest age, even after considering proximity to the hurricane path. The links between forest age and hurricane disturbances were likely due the prevalence of tall canopies. Tall forest canopies were strongly linked with low community‐weighted wood density (WD). These characteristics were on average more common in moist and wet forests (MAP >1250 mm). Conversely, dry forests were dominated by short species with high wood density (WD > 0.6 g cm−3) and did not show significant increases in basal area mortality rates after the hurricanes. Synthesis. Our findings show that selection towards drought‐tolerant traits across aridity gradients, such as short stature and dense wood, enhances resistance to hurricanes. However, forest age modulated responses to hurricanes, with older forests being less resistant across the islands. This evidence highlights the importance of considering the intricate links between ecological succession and plant function when forecasting tropical forests’ responses to increasingly strong hurricanes.

A Theoretical Framework to Quantify Ecosystem Pressure-Volume Relationships.

'Water potential' is the biophysically relevant measure of water status in vegetation relating to stomatal, canopy and hydraulic conductance, as well as mortality thresholds; yet, this cannot be directly related to measured and modelled fluxes of water at plot- to landscape-scale without understanding its relationship with 'water content'. The capacity for detecting vegetation water content via microwave remote sensing further increases the need to understand the link between water content and ecosystem function. In this review, we explore how the fundamental measures of water status, water potential and water content are linked at ecosystem-scale drawing on the existing theory of pressure-volume (PV) relationships. We define and evaluate the concept and limitations of applying PV relationships to ecosystems where the quantity of water can vary on short timescales with respect to plant water status, and over longer timescales and over larger areas due to structural changes in vegetation. As a proof of concept, plot-scale aboveground vegetation PV curves were generated from equilibrium (e.g., predawn) water potentials and water content of the above ground biomass of nine plots, including tropical rainforest, savanna, temperate forest, and a long-term Amazonian rainforest drought experiment. Initial findings suggest that the stored water and ecosystem capacitance scale linearly with biomass across diverse systems, while the relative values of ecosystem hydraulic capacitance and physiologically accessible water storage do not vary systematically with biomass. The bottom-up scaling approach to ecosystem water relations identified the need to characterise the distribution of water potentials within a community and also revealed the relevance of community-level plant tissue fractions to ecosystem water relations. We believe that this theory will be instrumental in linking our detailed understanding of biophysical processes at tissue-scale to the scale at which land surface models operate and at which tower-based, airborne and satellite remote sensing can provide information.

Assessment of Water-Related Ecosystem Services and Beneficiaries in the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park

Tropical rainforests are of vital importance to the environment, as they contribute to weather patterns, biodiversity and even human wellbeing. Hence, in the face of tropical deforestation, it becomes exigent to quantify and assess the contribution of ecosystem services associated with tropical rainforests to the environment and especially to the people. This study adopted a nuanced approach, different from traditional economic valuations, to estimate the water-related ecosystem services (WRESs) received by the people from 2010 to 2020 in the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park (HTRNP). The study focused on water yield, soil conservation, and water purification using InVEST, the SCS-CNGIS model, and spatial analysis. The results show (1) significant land cover changes within the HTRNP, as forest decreased by 4433 ha and water bodies increased by 4047 ha, indicating the active presence of human activities. However, land cover changes were more pronounced within the 5 km buffer area around the HTRNP, suggesting the effectiveness of the tropical rainforest conservation efforts in place. (2) The water yield of the HTRNP in the years studied decreased by 307.03 km3, based on the water yields in 2010 and 2020, which were 5625.7 km3 and 5318.7 km3, respectively. (3) Change detection showed that runoff mitigation in the rainforest has a negative mean (−0.21), indicating a slight overall decrease in soil conservation and runoff mitigation in the rainforest from 2010 to 2020; however, the higher curve number indicates areas susceptible to surface runoff. (4) The ecological effectiveness of water purification to absorb and reduce nitrogen load was better in 2020 (145,529 kg/year), as it was reduced from 506,739 kg/year in 2010, indicating improved water quality. (5) Population growth is more pronounced in areas with high water yields. Overall, the proposed framework has shown that the water yield potential of the HTRNP can meet the water consumption demands of people and industries situated within the buffer area. However, analysis of the study shows that it does not meet the crop water requirements. This study provides insights for decision makers in identifying potential beneficiaries and the essence of effective area-based conservation measures, and the proposed framework can be applied to any area of interest, offering a different approach in ecosystem services assessment.

Soil total phosphorus mediate the assembly processes of rhizosphere microbial communities of ficus species in a tropical rainforest

Revealing the assembly processes of plant rhizosphere microbial communities and the underlying influencing factors is essential for understanding the biodiversity and function of forest ecosystem. However, it remains unclear how deterministic and stochastic processes shape community structure and their relative importance in phosphorus-limited tropical environments. Here, we investigated the diversity, composition, and assembly processes of rhizosphere microbial communities of Ficus species in the Xishuangbanna region of southwest China, using methods such as high-throughput sequencing, variance partitioning analysis and null model analysis. We found that the community assembly processes of bacteria and fungi were primarily dominated by deterministic processes, with the fungal group being more deterministic than the bacteria group. Soil total phosphorus (TP) was the primary determinant of the composition and assembly of the rhizosphere microbial community, explaining 12.58% and 21.35% of the compositional variation in bacterial and fungal communities, respectively, and accounting for 14% of the microbial community assembly, but has a minor impact on their alpha diversity. This study highlights the distinct environmental driving factors of community composition and community assembly. The exposed positive relationship between soil TP and microbial deterministic process has inspiration for link of microbial community functions to soil function and sustainable forest management.

Savanna Plants Have a Lower Hydraulic Efficiency than Co-Occurring Species in a Rainforest

A plant species can have diverse hydraulic strategies to adapt to different environments. However, the water transport divergence of co-occurring species in contrasting habitats remains poorly studied but is important for understanding their ecophysiology adaptation to their environments. Here, we investigated whole-branch, stem and leaf water transport strategies and associated morphology traits of 11 co-occurring plant species in Yuanjiang valley-type savanna (YJ) with dry–hot habitats and Xishuangbanna tropical seasonal rainforest (XSBN) with wet–hot habits and tested the hypothesis that plants in YJ have a lower water transport efficiency than co-occurring species in XSBN. We found high variation in whole-branch, stem and leaf hydraulic conductance (Kshoot; Kstem and Kleaf) between YJ and XSBN, and that Kstem was significantly higher than Kleaf in these two sites (Kstem/Kleaf: 16.77 in YJ and 6.72 in XSBN). These plants in YJ with significantly lower Kshoot and Kleaf but higher sapwood density (WD) and leaf mass per area (LMA) showed a lower water transport efficiency regarding less water loss and the adaptation to the dry–hot habitat compared to co-occurring species in XSBN. In contrast, these co-occurring plants in XSBN with higher Kshoot and Kleaf but lower WD and LMA tended to maximize water transport efficiency and thus growth potential in the wet–hot habitat. Our findings suggest that these co-occurring species employ divergent hydraulic efficiency across YJ and XSBN so that they can benefit from the contrasting hydraulic strategies in adaptation to their respective habitats.

Runoff Change Characteristics and Response to Climate Variability and Human Activities Under a Typical Basin of Natural Tropical Rainforest Converted to Monoculture Rubber Plantations

Climate variability and human activities are major influences on the hydrological cycle. However, the driving characteristics of hydrological cycle changes and the potential impact on runoff in areas where natural forests have been converted to rubber plantations on a long-term scale remain unclear. Based on this, the Mann–Kendall (MK) and Pettitt breakpoint tests and the Double Mass Curve method were employed to identify the variation characteristics and breakpoints of precipitation (P), potential evapotranspiration (ET0), and runoff depth (R) in the Wanquan River Basin (WQRB) during the 1970–2016 period. The changes in runoff attributed to P, ET0, and the catchment characteristics parameter (n) were quantified using the elastic coefficient method based on the Budyko hypothesis. The results revealed that the P and R in the WQRB exhibited statistically insignificant decreasing trends, while ET0 displayed a significant increasing trend (p < 0.05). The breakpoint of runoff changes in the Jiabao and the Jiaji stations occurred in 1991 and 1983, respectively. The runoff changes show a negative correlation with both the n and ET0, while exhibiting a positive correlation with P. Moreover, it is observed that P and ET0 display higher sensitivity towards runoff changes compared to n. The decomposition analysis reveals that in the Dingan River Basin (DARB), human activities account for 53.54% of the runoff changes, while climate variability contributes to 46.46%. In the Main Wanquan River Basin (MWQRB), human activities contribute to 46.11%, whereas climate variability accounts for 53.89%. The research findings suggest that runoff is directly reduced by climate variability (due to decreased P and increased ET0), while human activities indirectly contribute to changes in runoff through n, exacerbating its effects. Rubber forest stands as the prevailing artificial vegetation community within the WQRB. The transformation of natural forests into rubber plantations constitutes the primary catalyst for the alteration of n in the WQRB. The research findings provide important reference for quantifying the driving force of hydrological changes caused by deforestation, which is of great significance for sustainable management of forests and water resources.

Two centuries of ornithological exploration of the Rio Doce Basin, southeastern Brazil. Part II—A catalogue of its birds and a gazetteer

The Rio Doce Hydrographic Basin (RDB) lies almost completely in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, a highly threatened tropical rainforest. The RDB has suffered dramatic anthropogenic impacts during the last two centuries and is currently one of the most degraded regions in southeastern Brazil. In this paper, we gathered 140,742 bird records collected since the early 19th by more than two thousand naturalists, professional scientists, and citizen scientists. This vast database was compiled from several sources, including published literature, unpublished technical reports, natural history museums, and citizen science platforms. After checking and standardizing the database, we found high species richness in the RDB, with 689 species recorded to date, from which 675 (98%) were documented by specimens or digital vouchers. This database is presented as a detailed catalogue, including maps containing all localities in which each species has been recorded. We present text accounts for 40 noteworthy species recorded in the RDB, and a complete gazetteer for the 636 localities sampled. Preliminary analyses reveal that the RDB avifauna suffered a dramatic change in its species composition during the last two centuries, mostly due to human activity. Highly sensitive species associated to pristine forests vanished, while species associated to dry and open habitat expanded their ranges in the RDB. Finally, in addition to thoroughly characterization of the RDB avifauna, this paper provides the basis for a series of studies about the avifauna of one of the hottest hotspots of biodiversity in the entire Neotropical region.

In thermotolerance tests of tropical tree leaves, the chlorophyll fluorescence parameter Fv/Fm measured soon after heat exposure is not a reliable predictor of tissue necrosis.

Tropical rainforests are hot and may be particularly sensitive to ongoing anthropogenic global warming. This has led to increased interest in the thermotolerance of tropical trees. Thermotolerance of leaves of two tropical tree species, Terminalia catappa and Coccoloba uvifera, was determined by exposing leaf samples to 15-min heat treatments, followed by measurements of potential photosystem II quantum yield (dark-adapted value of variable/maximum chlorophyll a fluorescence, Fv/Fm) after 24 h and 14 days, and visible damage (necrosis) after 14 days. T50 (24 h), the temperature at which Fv/Fm declined by 50% 24 h after heat treatments, was associated with only ~10% leaf area damage in C. uvifera and no damage in T. catappa. In neither species was leaf necrosis observed at T5 (24 h), the temperature at which Fv/Fm declined by 5%. In both species, temperatures significantly higher than T50 (24 h) were required for 50% leaf area necrosis to occur. T50 (14 days) was a better proxy of visible leaf damage than T50 (24 h). The relationship between heat-induced Fv/Fm decline and tissue necrosis varies among species. In species surveys of leaf thermal tolerances, calibration of the Fv/Fm assay against the necrosis test is recommended for each species under investigation. Fv/Fm measurements soon after heat exposure do not reliably predict irreversible heat damage and may thus not be suitable to model and predict the thermostability of tropical forest trees.

Long‐Term Impacts of Selective Logging in a Tropical Rainforest in the East Region of Cameroon

ABSTRACTAlthough selective logging has become the primary cause of degradation in many African countries, little is known about its long‐term effects. This study investigated the long‐term effects of selective logging on forest tree species diversity and dynamics in the East Region of Cameroon. Six permanent monitoring plots of 1 ha each in unlogged and logged forests were established in 2005 and a recensus in 2011. Each 1 ha plot was divided into 25, 20 × 20 m quadrats. Each 20 × 20 m quadrat was further divided into 16, 5 × 5 m subquadrats, where the diameter at breast height (DBH) of all trees ≥ 2 cm was measured. There was a decrease in plant species density and richness in all forest types. Sloetiopsis usambarensis was the most important species in the unlogged forests and forests logged 21 years ago. The most important family was Putrangivaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Violaceae in the unlogged forests and forests logged 11 and 21 years ago, respectively. The frequency distribution of stem size classes indicated a reversed J‐shape of tropical forests. The above ground biomass (AGB) recovered more than 50% in all forests, and the unlogged forest had the highest AGB (961.8 Mg/ha). Larger stems indicated a forest at a stage of recovery from disturbance. Silvicultural management should be considered.

Both Biotic and Abiotic Factors Shape the Spatial Distribution of Aboveground Biomass in a Tropical Karst Seasonal Rainforest in South China

Forest biomass accumulation is fundamental to ecosystem stability, material cycling, and energy flow, and pit lays a crucial role in the carbon cycle. Understanding the factors influencing aboveground biomass (AGB) is essential for exploring ecosystem functioning mechanisms, restoring degraded forests, and estimating carbon balance in forest communities. Tropical karst seasonal rainforests are species-rich and heterogeneous, yet the impact mechanisms of biotic and abiotic factors on AGB remain incompletely understood. Based on the survey data of a 15 ha monitoring plot in a karst seasonal rainforest in Southern China, this study explores the distribution characteristics of AGB and its intrinsic correlation with different influencing factors. The results show that the average AGB of the plot is 125.7 Mg/ha, with notable variations among habitats, peaking in hillside habitats. Trees with medium and large diameters at breast height (DBH ≥ 10 cm) account for 83.94% of the aboveground biomass (AGB) and are its primary contributors; dominant tree species exhibit higher AGB values. Both biotic and abiotic elements substantially influence AGB, with biotic factors exhibiting the largest influence. Among abiotic factors, topographic factors have a strong direct or indirect influence on AGB, while soil physicochemical properties have the smallest indirect impact. This research provides a comprehensive understanding of AGB distribution and its influencing factors in tropical karst forests (KFs), contributing to the management of carbon sinks in these ecosystems.

Discreet but diverse and specific: Determining plant‐herbivore interactions across a species‐rich plant family in a tropical rain forest

AbstractStudying plant–herbivore interactions within tropical rain forests is fundamental to understanding their ecology and evolution. An important aspect of plant–herbivore dynamics is the role of temporal and taxonomic variables in determining associations between herbivores and their host. Using the diverse and chemically rich plant family Annonaceae (Magnoliales), we conducted a year‐long study in Ecuador's Yasuní National Park in lowland Amazonia. We focused on nine understory tree species across a broad phylogenetic range within Annonaceae. For these species, we investigated patterns of herbivory, identified herbivores through DNA barcoding, and documented unique ant–butterfly associations. In general, leaf damage ranged from 0.09% to 25%, with significant temporal fluctuations for three species. Notably, Anaxagorea brevipes and Unonopsis veneficiorum faced higher herbivore pressure when compared to the other studied species. We document a discreet but diverse herbivore community, with 40 larvae from 12 Lepidoptera families collected throughout the year. Our findings identify, for the first time across a phylogenetically diverse sampling of Annonaceae, the specialization of herbivores on our focal species. Overall, our data provide valuable information on herbivory patterns at the local scale for this important rain forest plant family. Furthermore, these findings contribute to our understanding of the ecological processes that influence plant species diversity in tropical rain forests.Abstract in Spanish is available with online material.

Defaunation impacts on the carbon balance of tropical forests.

The urgent need to mitigate and adapt to climate change necessitates a comprehensive understanding of carbon cycling dynamics. Traditionally, global carbon cycle models have focused on vegetation, but recent research suggests that animals can play a significant role in carbon dynamics under some circumstances, potentially enhancing the effectiveness of nature-based solutions to mitigate climate change. However, links between animals, plants, and carbon remain unclear. We explored the complex interactions between defaunation and ecosystem carbon in Earth's most biodiverse and carbon-rich biome, tropical rainforests. Defaunation can change patterns of seed dispersal, granivory, and herbivory in ways that alter tree species composition and, therefore, forest carbon above- and belowground. Most studies we reviewed show that defaunation reduces carbon storage 0-26% in the Neo- and Afrotropics, primarily via population declines in large-seeded, animal-dispersed trees. However, Asian forests are not predicted to experience changes because their high-carbon trees are wind dispersed. Extrapolating these local effects to entire ecosystems implies losses of ∼1.6 Pg CO2 equivalent across the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and 4-9.2 Pg across the Amazon over 100 years and of ∼14.7-26.3 Pg across the Congo basin over 250 years. In addition to being hard to quantify with precision, the effects of defaunation on ecosystem carbon are highly context dependent; outcomes varied based on the balance between antagonist and mutualist species interactions, abiotic conditions, human pressure, and numerous other factors. A combination of experiments, large-scale comparative studies, and mechanistic models could help disentangle the effects of defaunation from other anthropogenic forces in the face of the incredible complexity of tropical forest systems. Overall, our synthesis emphasizes the importance of-and inconsistent results when-integrating animal dynamics into carbon cycle models, which is crucial for developing climate change mitigation strategies and effective policies.

Thinning Impacts on Carbon and Water Budgets in a Temperate Deciduous Forest Ecosystem

Among various forest management activities, thinning is a prevalent treatment that affects tree growth and living biomass. Increased moisture and light availability may also enhance the mineralization of litter and dead wood organic matter, impacting soil carbon stocks. Thinning may also affect the services forests provide, including water production and nutrient cycling. The impacts of thinning on water yield and carbon stocks have been well documented around the globe while targeting mainly one of these ecosystem services. Our experimental paired catchment study covers both and puts forward long term results. We assessed the carbon stock changes caused by two slight thinning treatments together with the impacts on water yield in experimental paired catchments of 71.9 (W–I) and 77.5 hectares (W–IV) in Istanbul, Türkiye. The null hypothesis was that the slight thinnings did not affect the water yield and carbon stocks significantly. On the carbon stock part, we calibrated and parametrized the CBM–CF3 model with field measurements to simulate changes in carbon stocks of mixed deciduous forest stands. The intensities of the treatments (thinnings) were 11% and 18% of the basal area, performed in 1986 and 2011, respectively. We found that, while C stocks decreased by around 30 tons per hectare during the 1986–2020 period, the water yield was enhanced by approximately 25 mm/yr in the treatment catchment compared to the control watershed during the four-year post-treatment period. This amount of streamflow increase was around 10 percent of the average water yield of the catchments. It was concluded that there was a detectable increase in water yield during the following four years of the slight thinning treatments, while the reduction in abovegound carbon stocks continued for more than three decades.

The Relevance of Flash Coloration Against Avian Predation in a Morpho Butterfly: A Field Experiment in a Tropical Rainforest

ABSTRACTThe flash coloration hypothesis postulates that otherwise cryptically colored animals suddenly displaying conspicuous colors during movement confuse predators, reducing capture. Morpho helenor butterflies have contrasting colors on dorsal (iridescent blue) and ventral (brown) wing surfaces, resulting in sequential blue “flashes” during flight. We tested whether this flashing pattern reduces avian predation on M. helenor in Atlantic rainforest by changing the flashing effect in three experiments. In Experiment 1, we added a blue band to the ventral wing. In Experiment 2, we covered the dorsal wing's blue band with a brown band. Control groups in each experiment were painted such that wing color patterns remained unaltered. Survivorship was evaluated through mark‐recapture censuses and beak marks on the wings. Results show that survivorship of treated butterflies in Experiment 1 decrease markedly compared to unaltered control individuals, while survivorship of treated butterflies in Experiment 2 did not differ compared to control individuals. In Experiment 3, we detected scant predation on treated (blue band added to ventral wing) and control butterflies (brown band added to ventral wing) on the forest floor (wings closed), corroborating that flash coloration is an important protective mechanism during flight. Our field experiments provide the first evidence, to our knowledge, that flash coloration in bright blue Morpho butterflies is an effective defense mechanism against avian predators in a tropical rainforest.

Mapping Tropical Dry Forest Gradients in an Andean Region with High Environmental Variability

Tropical Dry Forest (TDF) is one of the most threatened terrestrial environments in the neotropics because of high rates of conversion to agriculture. Despite this high degree of threat, many regions lack detailed maps on the actual extent and boundaries of their TDFs, which is fundamental information for their conservation. We developed a methodological framework to map TDF at 10 m in regions where they grade into other forest types. The approach uses climate variables, altitude, soil properties, and remote sensing data (multispectral and SAR − Synthetic Aperture Radar-SAR imagery) to predict TDF in the Department of Caldas, Colombia. Accuracy of the resulting map was confirmed with field observations (Overall Accuracy = 0.88, Kappa = 0.73, Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristics Curve = 0.87, and True Skill Statistic = 0.73). We estimated ∼ 54 km2 of TDF, which represents 9.2 % of its potential area of occurrence in the study area. TDF gradually transitions to Tropical Moist Forest (TMF) from two main low altitude river valleys to higher altitudes in the Andes Mountains. With modification, our methods could be applied for mapping TDF in other tropical regions.

Value Assessment and Prediction of Regulating Ecosystem Services in Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, China

Ecosystem services serve as a bridge between the ecological environment and human society. The quantitative analysis and forecasting of ecosystem services can provide references for regional eco-environmental assessments and land-use planning for the future. In this study, taking Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park (HTRNP) as an example, the value of regulating ecosystem services (RESs) in 2020 was assessed via ArcGIS 10.1 and the InVEST 3.5 model, and the per-unit value of RESs was calculated for different LULC types. In addition, in accordance with the Overall Planning for HTRNP and the objective of optimizing RESs, the value of RESs in short-term (to 2030) and long-term (to 2050) scenarios was forecast via a linear programming model. The results are as follows: (1) The RES value of HTRNP in 2020 was CNY 2090.67 × 108, with climate regulation accounting for the largest proportion; the spatial distribution of RESs in the eastern and central areas was higher than that in the western area, but different indicators of RESs differed in their spatial patterns in varied geographic units. (2) The natural forest ecosystem in HTRNP accounts for 76.94% of the total area but 84.82% of the total value of RESs. The per-unit value is ranked from highest to lowest as follows: montane rainforests > wetlands > lowland rainforests > lowland secondary rainforests > tropical coniferous forests > deciduous monsoon rainforests > tropical cloud forests > shrub forests > timber forests > economic forests > rubber forests > grasslands > farmlands > settlements. (3) In the short-term scenario, the value of RESs is CNY 2216.64 × 108, an increase of CNY 118.97 × 108 compared to 2020, with an increase rate of 5.67%. In the long-term scenario, the value of RESs is CNY 2472.48 × 108, an increase of CNY 374.81 × 108 compared to 2020, with an increase rate of 17.87%. The results reveal the significance of ecosystem services in the national park and can inform more targeted and scientifically sound decision-making in the future.

Spatial Configuration and Accessibility Assessment of Recreational Resources in Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park

Recreational resources, fundamental to ecological experiences, are critical in balancing conservation with development. Effective ecotourism planning is especially vital for newly established protected areas such as the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park in China’s developing system of natural conservation areas. Targeting Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, this study applies nearest neighbor index, kernel density analysis, and exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) to study the spatial pattern of 274 recreational resource points. Results indicate a clustered spatial pattern with significant differences in resource density among municipalities. Specifically, 98% of these resources can be reached in 3 h, with an average travel time of 91 min, and cultural resources exhibit greater accessibility than natural resources. Natural resource availability and ethnic culture are major factors of resource distribution and accessibility. This research offers a theoretical basis and practical guidance for optimizing recreational resource allocation and promoting ecotourism in the park, contributing to the ongoing discussion of sustainable tourism development.
