Spatiotemporal patterns and deposition of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in air, foliage and litter in a subtropical forest of South China

Recent studies revealed the un-negligible impact of airborne organophosphate esters (OPEs) on phosphorus (P)-limited ecosystems. Subtropical forests, the global prevalence P-limited ecosystems, contain canopy structures that can effectively sequester OPEs from the atmosphere. However, little is known about the behavior and fate of OPEs in subtropical forest ecosystem, and the impact on the P cycling in this ecosystem. OPE concentrations in the understory air (at two heights), foliage, and litterfall were investigated in a subtropical forest in southern China. The median ∑OPE concentrations were 3149 and 2489 pg/m3 in the upper and bottom air, respectively. Foliage exhibited higher ∑OPE concentrations (median = 386 ng/g dry weight (dw)) compared to litter (median = 267 ng/g dw). The air OPE concentrations were ordered by broadleaved forest > mixed forest > coniferous forest, which corresponds to the results of canopy coverage or leaf area index. The spatial variation of OPEs in foliage and litter was likely caused by the leaf surface functional traits. Higher OPE concentrations were found in the wet season for understory air while in the dry season for foliage and litter, which were attributed to the changes in emission sources and meteorological conditions, respectively. The inverse temporal variation suggests the un-equilibrium partitioning of OPEs between leaf and air. The OPE concentrations during the litter-incubation presented similar temporal trends with those in foliage and litter, indicating the strong interaction of OPEs between the litter layer and the near-soil air, and the efficient buffer of litter layer played in the OPEs partitioning between soil and air. The median OPEs-associated P deposition fluxes through litterfall were 270, 186, and 249 μg P/m2·yr in the broadleaved, mixed, and coniferous forests, respectively. Although the fluxes accounted for approximately 0.2% of the total atmospheric P deposition, their significance to this P-limited ecosystem may not be negligible.

Trimethylamine from Subtropical Forests Rival Total Farmland Emissions in China.

Many types of living plants release gaseous trimethylamine (TMA), making it a potentially important contributor to new particle formation (NPF) in remote areas. However, a panoramic view of the importance of forest biogenic TMA at the regional scale is lacking. Here, we pioneered nationwide mobile measurements of TMA across a transect of contiguous farmland in eastern China and a transect of subtropical forests in southern China. In contrast to the farmland route, TMA concentrations measured during the subtropical forest route correlated significantly with isoprene, suggesting potential TMA emissions from leaves. Our high time-resolved concentrations obtained from a weak photo-oxidizing atmosphere reflected freshly emitted TMA, indicating the highest emission intensity from irrigated dryland (set as the baseline of 10), followed by paddy field (7.1), subtropical evergreen forests (5.9), and subtropical broadleaf and mixed forests (4.3). Extrapolating their proportions roughly to China, subtropical forests alone, which constitute half of the total forest area, account for nearly 70% of the TMA emissions from the nation's total farmland. Our estimates, despite the uncertainties, take the first step toward large-scale assessment of forest biogenic amines, highlighting the need for observational and modeling studies to consider this hitherto overlooked source of TMA.

Nonsignificant elevational trends of soil microbial respiration and temperature sensitivity in a subtropical forest

AbstractSoil carbon (C) cycling plays a critical role in regulating global C budget and atmospheric CO2 concentrations. The ongoing global warming potentially accelerates soil C loss induced by microbial respiration (MR) and makes soil a large C source to the atmosphere. Quantifying the drivers of MR and its response to rising temperature (also called temperature sensitivity, Q10) should be a high priority to improve the modeling and prediction of terrestrial C cycle under global warming. In this study, we applied a standardized soil sampling along nine gradients from 410 to 1080 m in a subtropical forest in southern China. All soil samples were incubated at varying temperature gradients (10–15–20–25–20–15°C) to measure MR and Q10 every day for three weeks. Then all the measured MR was adjusted by the field temperature of each elevation gradient. Our objectives were to examine the response of MR and Q10 to the environmental change induced by elevational gradients in the subtropical forest and then quantify their main drivers. We totally collected 54 abiotic and biotic factors relative to the MR and Q10. Our results showed that the incubated MR increased from low to high elevation. However, a significant elevation trend of the adjusted MR was not examined after adjusting the field temperature of sampling sites, due to the trade‐off between increasing soil C concentration and declining temperature as elevation increased. We further found that the elevational gradients did not cause significant change in Q10. The variation in Q10 was negatively dominated by soil C quality, which declined nonlinearly along the elevation gradients. This study highlights the trade‐off between environment and biotic factors in determining soil C decomposition along elevational gradients. The uncertainty of MR measurements caused by unifying incubated temperature should not be ignored in future model development.

Plant functional traits and abundance jointly shape keystone plant species in a plant–ectomycorrhizal fungus network

AbstractKeystone species are more important than others for community dynamics and stability. Keystone species can be identified and evaluated by their centrality (i.e., a relative ranking of the topological positional importance of a species) in ecological networks. Studies of node centrality of plant–fungus bipartite networks, for example, have identified the keystone species that are important for maintaining network structure and stability. However, the underlying drivers of the importance of species in a network have rarely been examined. We assessed the centrality (degree, closeness, and betweenness) of plant and fungal species in a plant–ectomycorrhizal fungus network in a subtropical forest in southern China. Based on the phylogenies of plants and fungi and plant traits, we explored ecological factors that led to a species taking a central position or not. We found one plant species (Ternstroemia gymnanthera) and four species of ectomycorrhizal fungi (Russula citrina, Scleroderma sp., and two Cenococcum sp.) were characterized by the highest centrality of degree, closeness, and betweenness among the bipartite network nodes and thus played key roles in maintaining network structure. Centrality for fungi (not for plants) was phylogenetically constrained. Plant traits and abundance together explained 46.36%, 46.0%, and 43.7% of variation in the centrality of degree, closeness, and betweenness of plant species in the bipartite network, respectively. When plant or fungal species were sequentially removed on the order of higher to lower centrality, network was less stable than randomly removed. We suggest that abundance and traits determine the positional importance of plant species in a network. This work helps understand how plant–fungus association networks will respond to species extinction and changes in species abundance and functional traits due to habitat fragmentation and human activities.

Changes in Relationship between Forest Biomass Productivity and Biodiversity of Different Type Subtropical Forests in Southern China

Forest productivity is influenced by various factors, including biodiversity, environmental factors, functional traits, and forest types. However, the relative importance of these factors in determining the productivity of subtropical forests in southern China remains controversial. In this study, we analyzed a dataset of 24 forest plots from four subtropical forest types in the Nanling Mountains with the main goal of identifying and quantifying the relative contribution of the main driving factors of forest productivity in these forests. Generalized linear regression and structural equation modeling were used to examine the relationship between forest biomass productivity (aboveground, belowground and total), biodiversity (taxonomic diversity, phylogenetic diversity and functional diversity), and environmental variables (i.e., physiography and climate). The results indicated that both environmental factors and biodiversity played pivotal roles in explaining the biomass productivity of the Nanling subtropical forests. Environmental factors had the greatest influence on total productivity, while the impacts of different types of biodiversity on various productivity components (aboveground and belowground) varied notably. Taxonomic diversity showed the strongest positive effect on the aboveground and belowground biomass productivity. However, phylogenetic and functional diversity had negative effects on productivity. Furthermore, these relationships also exhibited variations when considering different altitude gradients, with low altitudes generally leading to negative biodiversity–productivity correlations. We contextualized our results regarding the three state-of-the-art theories about biodiversity–productivity relationships (selection probability, niche complementarity, and biomass ratio) and concluded that both selection probability and niche complementarity are the driving mechanisms of productivity in the subtropical forests of the Nanling Mountains. This study offers valuable insights into the functioning and biodiversity mechanisms of subtropical forest ecosystems in southern China.

Lack of P limitation on litter decomposition: a case study from long-term addition of phosphorus and nitrogen in three subtropical forests in southern China

ABSTRACT Contrary to the widely accepted belief that elevated soil respiration after phosphorus (P) fertilization indicates P limitations for soil microorganisms in (sub)tropical forests, our previous studies have proposed that the elevated respiration results from the abiotically elevated availability of carbon (C), originating from competitive desorption from sorption sites on the surface of soil particles following P fertilization. In this study, we tested the impact of P fertilization (150 kg NaH2PO4-P ha−1 yr−1) on the decomposition of tea bags (Lipton Rooibos and Green teas) in three types of subtropical forests (primary, secondary, and planted forests) at the Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve, where previous findings reported increased soil respiration following P fertilization. If the traditional view holds true, early-stage litter decomposition should be stimulated by P fertilization, similar to the observed stimulation in soil respiration. Conversely, if this is not the case, it strongly reinforces our new hypothesis. Tea bags were employed to serve a twofold purpose: to assess the effects of P fertilization on litter decomposition within the soil, rather than on the soil surface, and to concentrate on the decomposition of early-stage litter. Our results demonstrated that P fertilization did not accelerate the decomposition of tea bags, indicating the exclusive enhancement of soil respiration without simultaneous stimulation of litter decomposition. This contradicts expectations if P were limiting microbial activity, reinforcing our hypothesis. In conclusion, our study reaffirmed the hypothesis that microbial activity in tropical forest soils is not primarily limited by P availability.

Effect of the Moso Bamboo Pyllostachys edulis (Carrière) J.Houz. on Soil Phosphorus Bioavailability in a Broadleaf Forest (Jiangxi Province, China)

Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis (Carrière) J.Houz.) is a fast-growing species that commonly invades neighboring broadleaf forests and has been widely reported in subtropical forest ecosystems. However, little is known about the effect on soil phosphorus (P) bioavailability and its potential influence factor during the P. edulis expansion. Here, the four soil P bioavailable fractions (i.e., CaCl2-P, Citrate-P, Enzyme-P, and HCl-P), acid phosphatase activity, iron and aluminum oxides (Fed and Ald), and soil total P pool at depths of 0–10 cm, 10–20 cm, and 20–40 cm were measured in three expanding interfaces (a broadleaf forest, a mixed bamboo–broadleaf forest, and a pure P. edulis forest) in subtropical forests of southern China. Regardless of soil depths, the CaCl2-P content was significantly lower in the mixed bamboo–broadleaf forest than the other two forest types, with contents ranging from 0.09 to 0.16 mg/kg, whereas the HCl-P content was significantly lower in the broadleaf forest, with contents ranging from 3.42 to 14.33 mg/kg, and the Enzyme-P content and acid phosphatase activity were notably lower in P. edulis forest with contents of 0.17–0.52 mg/kg and 68.66–74.80 μmol MUF released g−1 min−1, respectively. Moreover, the soil total P pool was enhanced in the mixed bamboo–broadleaf forest in 0–10 cm depth compared to broadleaf and P. edulis forests, with increases of 27.40% and 31.02%, respectively. The redundancy analysis showed that soil pH plays an important role in regulating soil P bioavailability during the P. edulis expansion (p < 0.01). From the above results, the invasion of P. edulis into broadleaf forests has resulted in soil P bioavailability and storage capacity. The results of this study suggest that when P. edulis invades broadleaf forests, it could affect the soil P bioavailability by elevating soil pH, which in turn drives and facilitates the completion of the expansion. This is important for understanding P cycling during the P. edulis forest expansion in subtropical regions.

Non-additive effects on biodegradation of moso bamboo litter- and broadleaf tree litter-leached dissolved organic matter mixtures in a subtropical forest of southern China

Phyllostachys pubescens (moso bamboo) has extensively expanded to subtropical broadleaf forests. However, how moso bamboo expansion influences litter-leached dissolved organic matter (DOM) biodegradation is unclear. In this study, we collected fresh leaf litter of moso bamboo and 10 broadleaf tree species from a subtropical forest in southern China and extracted litter-leached dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved total nitrogen (DTN), and dissolved total phosphorus (DTP). Then, using a 42-day incubation experiment, we measured litter-leached DOM biodegradation of the selected 11 species and assessed the relative mixing effects on biodegradation of bamboo litter- and broadleaf tree litter-leached DOM mixtures with volume mixing ratios of 1:3, 1:1, and 3:1. In the litter leachates, bamboo had lower DOC:DTN ratio, DOC:DTP ratio, and DOM aromaticity (i.e., lower SUVA254 and SUVA350 values) than most broadleaf tree species. Litter-leached DOM biodegradation did not differ among bamboo, Liquidambar formosana, Vernicia fordii, and Cyclobalanopsis glauca, but was greater for bamboo than for the other seven broadleaf tree species. Leaf litter-leached DOM biodegradation correlated negatively with DOC:DTN and DOC:DTP ratios, but exhibited no significant relationship with DOM aromaticity. Regardless of volume mixing ratios, antagonistic effects were observed when bamboo litter-leached DOM was mixed with broadleaf tree litter-leached DOM with comparable biodegradation, whereas synergistic effects occurred when bamboo litter-leached DOM was mixed with broadleaf tree litter-leached DOM with lower biodegradation. The relative mixing effects on DOM biodegradation increased linearly with elevated interspecific difference in litter-leached DOM biodegradation between bamboo and broadleaf tree species across the incubation periods. These findings indicate that moso bamboo expansion will substantially alter litter-leached DOM biodegradation by improving substrate quality and changing species interactions, and the magnitudes of such changing trends are dependent on the native tree litter-leached DOM biodegradation in subtropical broadleaf forests.

Dynamics of soil microbial communities involved in carbon cycling along three successional forests in southern China.

Dynamics of plant communities during forest succession have been received great attention in the past decades, yet information about soil microbial communities that are involved in carbon cycling remains limited. Here we investigated soil microbial community composition and carbohydrate degradation potential using metagenomic analysis and examined their influencing factors in three successional subtropical forests in southern China. Results showed that the abundances of soil bacteria and fungi increased (p ≤ 0.05 for both) with forest succession in relation to both soil and litter characteristics, whereas the bacterial diversity did not change (p > 0.05) and the fungal diversity of Shannon-Wiener index even decreased (p ≤ 0.05). The abundances of microbial carbohydrate degradation functional genes of cellulase, hemicellulase, and pectinase also increased with forest succession (p ≤ 0.05 for all). However, the chitinase gene abundance did not change with forest succession (p > 0.05) and the amylase gene abundance decreased firstly in middle-succession forest and then increased in late-succession forest. Further analysis indicated that changes of functional gene abundance in cellulase, hemicellulase, and pectinase were primarily affected by soil organic carbon, soil total nitrogen, and soil moisture, whereas the variation of amylase gene abundance was well explained by soil phosphorus and litterfall. Overall, we created a metagenome profile of soil microbes in subtropical forest succession and fostered our understanding of microbially-mediated soil carbon cycling.

Leaf and root traits are partially coordinated but they show contrasting multi-trait-based community trait dispersion patterns in a subtropical forest

Abstract The ecology of plant species relies on the synchronous functioning of leaves and roots, but few studies have simultaneously examined the community trait dispersion (CTD) patterns of both organs. We measured 16 analogous leaf and root traits on 44 co-occurring woody species in a subtropical forest in southern China, aiming to examine whether leaf and root traits were coordinated, organized into parallel trait axes, exhibited similar CTD, and displayed consistent responses in CTD and community-weighted means of (CWM) traits over environmental gradients. While the first axes of leaf and root trait variation similarly exhibited a fast–slow continuum, leaf traits covered a secondary “carbon economics” axis, contrasting to root traits depicting a collaboration axis reflecting species’ mycorrhizal dependency. Analogous leaf and root chemical traits were generally coordinated but less so for morphological traits. At the community level, changes in the CWM of the first axes were generally consistent among organs with more conservative traits found as increasing elevation but not for the second axis. While root traits became thinner and more conservative as soil phosphorus concentration decreased, leaf traits rarely varied. When different trait axes were combined, leaf traits were overdispersed but tended to converge with increased elevation and soil potassium and phosphorus levels, whereas root traits were clustered but tended to diverge along the same gradients. Our study highlights fine filtering of different suites of traits above- and belowground, which in turn might reduce overall niche overlap among species and promote coexistence with diverse functional designs.

Long-term warming increased carbon sequestration capacity in a humid subtropical forest.

Tropical and subtropical forests play a crucial role in global carbon (C) pools, and their responses to warming can significantly impact C-climate feedback and predictions of future global warming. Despite earth system models projecting reductions in land C storage with warming, the magnitude of this response varies greatly between models, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Here, we conducted a field ecosystem-level warming experiment in a subtropical forest in southern China, by translocating mesocosms (ecosystem composed of soils and plants) across 600 m elevation gradients with temperature gradients of 2.1°C (moderate warming), to explore the response of ecosystem C dynamics of the subtropical forest to continuous 6-year warming. Compared with the control, the ecosystem C stock decreased by 3.8% under the first year of 2.1°C warming; but increased by 13.4% by the sixth year of 2.1°C warming. The increased ecosystem C stock by the sixth year of warming was mainly attributed to a combination of sustained increased plant C stock due to the maintenance of a high plant growth rate and unchanged soil C stock. The unchanged soil C stock was driven by compensating and offsetting thermal adaptation of soil microorganisms (unresponsive soil respiration and enzyme activity, and more stable microbial community), increased plant C input, and inhibitory C loss (decreased C leaching and inhibited temperature sensitivity of soil respiration) from soil drying. These results suggest that the humid subtropical forest C pool would not necessarily diminish consistently under future long-term warming. We highlight that differential and asynchronous responses of plant and soil C processes over relatively long-term periods should be considered when predicting the effects of climate warming on ecosystem C dynamics of subtropical forests.

Vein hierarchy mediates the 2D relationship between leaf size and drought tolerance across subtropical forest tree species.

Previous studies have observed a 2D relationship (i.e. decoupled correlation) between leaf size (LS) and leaf economics as well as a tight correlation between leaf economics and drought tolerance. However, the underlying mechanism maintaining the relationship between LS and drought tolerance remains largely unknown. Here, we measured LS, water potential at 50% loss of hydraulic conductance, hydraulic safety margin and different orders of vein traits across 28 tree species in a subtropical forest in Southern China. We found that LS and drought tolerance were in two independent dimensions (R2=0.00, P>0.05). Primary and secondary vein traits (i.e. vein diameter and density) explained the variation of LS, with R2 ranging from 0.37 to 0.70 (all Ps<0.01), while minor vein traits accounted for the variation of leaf drought tolerance, with R2 ranging from 0.30 to 0.43 (all Ps<0.01). Our results provide insight into the 2D relationship between LS and drought tolerance and highlight the importance of vein hierarchy in plant leaf functioning.

The relative impacts of vegetation, topography and weather on landscape patterns of burn severity in subtropical forests of southern China

Understanding the landscape patterns of burn severity is vital for managing fire-prone ecosystems. Relatively limited research has been done about fire and burn severity patterns in subtropical forests. Here, we derived the pre-fire forest type data from a global land-cover product at 30 m resolution based on time-series Landsat imageries. Using Landsat 8 OLI remote sensing imagery and field-based composite burn index (CBI), this study spatially mapped the burn severity of 27 forest fires in the subtropical forest ecosystems in southern China from 2017 to 2021. The landscape pattern of patches with different burn severity was quantified using landscape indices. In addition, factors influencing the patterns of burn severity across the landscape were determined using the Geodetector model. Burn severity of patches varied significantly over space. High burn severity was common in forest patches with low fragmentation, low patch density, and regular shape. In contrast, moderate and low burn severity was prevalent in patches with smaller patch size, high patch density, and complex shapes. Extensively burned forest patches were located at higher elevations, while more fragmented patches were located in gently sloping areas. Topographic factors were the most significant factors influencing variances in burn severity across the forest patches, followed by weather conditions. Compared to low elevation areas, vegetation types at the high elevation areas (dominated by Masson pine) are more singular, with higher fuel loads, thus resulting in a more regularly-shaped distribution of highly severe burning patches. A detailed understanding of burn severity patterns and driving factors in a landscape can help develop sustainable forest management and restoration strategies. Practically, fire managers should conduct mechanical fuel treatments or thinning of forests at high-elevation areas to reduce the potential of severe fire behavior and the continuity of fire spread.

Effect of leaf phenology and morphology on the coordination between stomatal and minor vein densities.

Leaf phenology (evergreen vs. deciduous) and morphology (simple vs. compound) are known to be related to water use strategies in tree species and critical adaptation to certain climatic conditions. However, the effect of these two traits and their interactions on the coordination between minor vein density (MVD) and stomatal density (SD) remains unclear. In this study, we examined the leaves of 108 tree species from plots in a primary subtropical forest in southern China, including tree species with different leaf morphologies and phenologies. We assessed nine leaf water-related functional traits for all species, including MVD, SD, leaf area (LA), minor vein thickness (MVT), and stomatal length (SL). The results showed no significant differences in mean LA and SD between either functional group (simple vs. compound and evergreen vs. deciduous). However, deciduous trees displayed a significantly higher mean MVD compared to evergreen trees. Similarly, compound-leaved trees have a higher (marginally significant) MVD than simple-leaved trees. Furthermore, we found that leaf morphology and phenology have significantly interactive effects on SL, and the compound-leafed deciduous trees exhibited the largest average SL among the four groups. There were significant correlations between the MVD and SD in all different tree groups; however, the slopes and interceptions differed within both morphology and phenology. Our results indicate that MVD, rather than SD, may be the more flexible structure for supporting the coordination between leaf water supply and demand in different leaf morphologies and phenologies. The results of the present study provide mechanistic understandings of the functional advantages of different leaf types, which may involve species fitness in community assembly and divergent responses to climate changes.

Zoning Prediction and Mapping of Three-Dimensional Forest Soil Organic Carbon: A Case Study of Subtropical Forests in Southern China

Accurate soil organic carbon (SOC) maps are helpful for guiding forestry production and management. Different ecological landscape areas within a large region may have different soil–landscape relationships, so models specifically for these areas may capture these relationships more accurately than the global model for the entire study area. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of zonal modelling in predicting forest SOC and to produce highly accurate forest SOC distribution maps. The prediction objects were SOC at five soil depths (0–20, 20–40, 40–60, 60–80, and 80–100 cm). First, the forest type map and soil texture class map were used to divide the relative homogeneous regions in Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province, China. Second, seven terrain variables derived from a 12.5-m digital elevation model (DEM) and five vegetation variables generated from 10-m Sentinel-2 remote sensing images were used as predictors to develop regional artificial neural network (ANN) models for each homogeneous region, as well as a global ANN model for the entire study area (1000 sample points). Finally, 10-fold cross-validation was used to assess the ANN prediction model performance, and independent validation was used to evaluate the produced forest SOC prediction maps (194 additional samples). The cross-validation results showed that the accuracies of the regional models were better than that of the global model. Independent validation results also showed that the precision (R2) of 0- to 100-cm forest SOC maps generated by forest type modelling had an improvement of 0.05–0.15, and that by soil texture class modelling had an improvement of 0.07–0.13 compared to the map generated by the global model. In conclusion, delineating relatively homogeneous regions via simple methods can improve prediction accuracy when undertaking soil predictions over large areas, especially with complex forest landscapes. In addition, SOC in the study area is generally more abundant in broadleaf forest and clay areas, with overall levels decreasing with soil depth. Accurate SOC distribution information can provide references for fertilization and planting. Plants with particularly high soil fertility requirements may perhaps be planted in broadleaf forests or clay areas, and plants with particularly developed roots may require furrow application of a small amount of SOC.

Impact of nitrogen addition on single and mixed tree leaf litter decomposition depends on N forms in subtropical China

Increased nitrogen (N) inputs via atmospheric deposition are believed to influence leaf litter decomposition rate in forests. However, whether inorganic and organic N deposition produces a consistent influence on leaf litter decomposition is uncertain in forests, especially leaf litter mixtures. Using a fertilization experiment, we investigated the impact of inorganic (NH4Cl) and organic (urea and glycine) N on decomposition of single leaf litter (Liquidambar formosana, Pinus elliottii, Pinus massoniana, and Schima superba) and mixed broadleaf and coniferous (equal mass ratio) leaf litter using the litterbag method in a subtropical forest in southern China. Both inorganic and organic N addition increased mineral soil β-1,4-glucosidase, cellobiohydrolase, β-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminidase, L-leucine aminopeptidase, and acid phosphatase enzyme activities. During 780-day incubation, single litter decomposition was accelerated by NH4Cl addition but was not affected by either urea or glycine addition. Irrespective of added N forms, N addition shifted litter mixing effects on decomposition from synergistic effects to either additive or antagonistic effects. Accordingly, N addition generally decelerated litter mixture decomposition rates. Compared to coniferous litter, N addition-induced changes in litter mixing effects were often lower for broadleaf litter within the litter mixtures. These findings suggest that the impact of N enrichment on litter decomposition depends upon litter types and N forms, and highlight that N forms should be incorporated into assessing the consequence of atmospheric N deposition on the biogeochemical cycles in subtropical forests.

Effects of Tree Diversity, Functional Composition, and Large Trees on the Aboveground Biomass of an Old-Growth Subtropical Forest in Southern China

Forest aboveground biomass (AGB) plays an important role in regulating the global carbon cycle and is thus an essential component of ecosystem functioning. In the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF), studies have shown that many biotic factors (e.g., species, functional traits, and large trees) and abiotic factors have significant impacts on AGB. However, the relative strength of these affecting factors remains unclear. In this study, we analyzed woody plants (diameter at breast height [DBH] ≥ 1 cm) within a 1.6 ha plot in an old-growth subtropical natural forest in southern China. We used structural equation models to test the effects of tree diversity (species, phylogenetic, functional, and size inequality), functional composition, large trees, and environmental factors (topography, soil nutrients, and understory light) on AGB. Our results indicated that size inequality, the community-weighted mean of maximum DBH (CWM_MDBH), and large trees had significant, positive effects on AGB (p &lt; 0.001), while lower soil phosphorus content was found to promote an increase in AGB. Furthermore, large trees, which were mostly composed of dominant tree species, were the main driver of AGB, and the effect of functional composition (e.g., CWM_MDBH) on AGB was substantially reduced by large trees. We argue that the selection effect plays a key role in regulating BEF relationships in subtropical natural forests and conclude that retaining large-diameter trees and dominant species, along with sustaining a complex stand structure, are key measures for improving productivity.

Effect of Glomus intraradices on root morphology, biomass production and phosphorous use efficiency of Chinese fir seedlings under low phosphorus stress.

Available phosphorus (P) scarcity in the highly weathered soils of the subtropical forests in southern China is a serious concern. To ensure whether inoculation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) with Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) under low P stress conditions could promote its growth and P utilization capacity, an indoor pot simulation experiment was carried out with the different P supply treatments and Chinese fir seedlings as the tested material. The experiment had two P supply treatments, no P supply (P0, 0 mmol·L-1 KH2PO4) and normal P supply (P1, 1.0 mmol·L-1 KH2PO4). The seedling in each P supply treatment was inoculated with Glomus intraradices (Gi), a widespread species of AMF in the natural environment, and with no AMF inoculation as a control treatment (CK). The Gi infection rate in the root system, root cortex tissue dissolution rate, root morphological indexes and biomass, whole plant P use efficiency, and root P use efficiency of Chinese fir were determined under different treatment conditions. The results showed that P0 treatment significantly increased the Gi infection rate (p< 0.05). After inoculating AMF with different P supply treatments, the root cortex tissue dissolution rate was considerably enhanced. In contrast, the Chinese fir's root length and surface area were reduced; however, the root volume did not change significantly. The average root diameter in the P0 treatment and inoculated with AMF was significantly more prominent than in the uninoculated treatment (p< 0.05). The root biomass and root-to-shoot ratio at different P supply treatments were significantly higher in the Gi infection treatment than in the CK group. Under different P supply treatments, root inoculation with Gi promoted root P use efficiency and whole plant P use efficiency. In conclusion, low P stress condition promoted the colonization of AMF in the root system, increased the dissolution of root cortex tissue, root volume, and the average diameter, and promoted root biomass accumulation and P use efficiency.

Effects of Exotic and Native Earthworms on Soil Micro-Decomposers in a Subtropical Forest: A Field Mesocosm Experiment

Biological invasion is one of the most important factors affecting global biodiversity change, which can adversely affect ecosystem function. However, little is known about the effects of belowground biological invasions on soil ecosystems. In this study, we conducted a field-based mesocosm experiment to observe the effects of exotic and native earthworms (Pontoscolex corethrurus and Amynthas corticis, respectively) on soil nutrients and micro-decomposers (i.e., soil microorganisms and nematodes) in a subtropical forest in southern China. We found that exotic and native earthworms had different effects on nutrient availability and nematode communities in the soil. Specifically, exotic earthworms significantly decreased the content of nitrates in the soil and tended to decrease the total nematode abundance compared with native earthworms. Furthermore, nematode species richness and Shannon–Wiener index were lowest in the treatment with exotic earthworms and were the highest in the treatment with native earthworms. However, neither native nor exotic earthworms significantly affected soil microbial community composition. The results of redundancy analysis indicated that available phosphorus was positively correlated with nematode community. Our results demonstrated that exotic earthworms had adverse effects on the available nutrient content in the soil, and had a potential negative effect on the abundance of soil microfauna. These findings will be helpful in understanding the influence of exotic earthworms on soil micro-decomposers and the ecological consequences of earthworm invasion.

Tree Diversity, Structure and Functional Trait Identity Promote Stand Biomass Along Elevational Gradients in Subtropical Forests of Southern China

AbstractSubtropical forests play an important role in regulating global carbon storage, a substantial portion of these forest carbon pools are stored in biomass stocks. Yet, we do not fully understand how tree diversity, stand structure and functional trait identity influence biomass stocks along elevational gradients. Here we used forest inventory data from nine 1‐ha plots across different elevational gradients in subtropical forests of southern China. We analyzed the effects of tree diversity, structure and functional trait identity on biomass along elevational gradients, and tested the complementarity effect, selection effect, mass‐ratio hypothesis and specie‐energy hypothesis. We found that multiple metrics of diversity and structural attributes significantly promoted biomass. Forest biomass was improved by traits with greater maximum height, larger seed mass (SM) and lower wood density (WD). Specifically, large‐diameter trees were the strongest independent predictor of biomass relative to other single variables. A significant increase in tree diversity, density and biomass was observed with increasing elevational gradients; additionally, trees dominated by traits related to greater maximum tree height, larger SM and lower WD also increased. Elevation indirectly increased biomass by increasing diversity and community‐weighted mean traits, but indirectly decreased it by reducing structural attributes. Our results support the complementarity effect, selection effect and mass‐ratio hypothesis simultaneously, but not the species‐energy hypothesis. The selection effect had greater effects on stand biomass than the complementarity effect and mass‐ratio hypothesis. Our findings suggest that developing natural tree diversity and structural complexity as well as dominant resource‐acquisitive species is beneficial to maintain and enhance carbon storage capacity in species‐rich subtropical forests along elevational gradients.
