Validation of the Teacher Questionnaire of Montessori Practice for Early Childhood in the Dutch Context

Montessori education has existed for more than 100 years and counts almost 16,000 schools worldwide (Debs et al., 2022). Still, little is known about the implementation and fidelity of Montessori principles. Measuring implementations holds significant importance as it provides insight into current Montessori practices and because it is assumed that implementation might influence its effectiveness. In the Netherlands, it is especially important to measure fidelity because of the country’s history of flexible implementation of Montessori principles. No instruments currently exist that are specifically designed to measure Montessori implementation in the Dutch context. This study aims to validate a translated version of the Teacher Questionnaire for Montessori Practices, developed by Murray et al. (2019), within the Dutch early childhood education context. Additionally, it seeks to investigate the extent to which Montessori principles are implemented in Dutch early childhood schools. Data were collected from 131 early childhood Montessori teachers. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the Dutch dataset did not align with the factor structure proposed by Murray et al. (2019). Subsequent exploratory factor analysis led to the identification of a 3-factor solution, encompassing dimensions related to Children’s Freedom, Teacher Guidance, and Curriculum, which shows some similarities with Murray et al.’s (2019) factors. Implementation levels in the Netherlands varied, with the highest level of implementation observed in Children’s Freedom and the lowest in Curriculum.

Development and Initial Validation of the Shame Frequency Questionnaire in Medical Students.

This study presents the steps taken to develop and collect initial validity evidence for the Shame Frequency Questionnaire in Medical Students. The instrument was based on a 7-step survey design; validity evidence was collected from content, response process, internal structure, and relationship to other variables. A literature review and qualitative interviews led to the design of the initial 16-item scale. Expert review and cognitive interviewing led to minor modifications in the original structure. Initial pilot testing was conducted in August 2019 in Uniformed Services University (USU) medical students; reliability assessment and exploratory factor analysis were performed. The revised 12-item scale was tested in January 2022 in Duke University School of Medicine medical students; reliability assessment, exploratory factor analysis, and correlation analysis with depression, burnout, anxiety, emotional thriving, and emotional well-being were performed. A total of 336 of 678 USU students (50%) and 106 of 522 Duke students (20%) completed the survey. Initial exploratory factor analysis of the USU data revealed 1 factor (shame), and 4 items were dropped from the scale according to predefined rules. Subsequent exploratory factor analysis of the Duke data revealed 1 factor; no further items were removed according to predefined rules. Internal consistent reliability was 0.95, and all interitem correlations were less than 0.85 for USU and Duke samples. As predicted, mean shame scale scores were positively correlated with anxiety ( r = 0.54, P < .001), burnout ( r = 0.50, P < .001), and depression ( r = 0.47, P < .001) and negatively correlated with emotional thriving ( r = -0.46, P < .001) and emotional recovery ( r = -0.46, P < .001). The Shame Frequency Questionnaire in Medical Students is a psychometrically sound instrument with strong internal reliability and multisource validity evidence, supporting its use in studying shame in medical students.

Manufacturing Companies Industry 4.0 maturity level: A multivariate analysis

Purpose: This research investigates Portuguese manufacturing companies' Industry 4.0 (I4.0) maturity perception level and proposes an index to measure that aim.Design/methodology/approach: This study uses a survey method to gather the companies' perceptions of their I4.0 maturity level and applies subsequent exploratory factor analysis to propose a global I4.0 measurement index.Findings: The research results show that the most critical factors in evaluating the perception level of I4.0 Perception Maturity (IPM) are strategy, leadership, and customer experiences. The result for the Global Index was 53.50%. Hence, the global Index companies' perception of the level of maturity of I4.0 in Portugal is medium.Research limitations/implications: This study encompasses only Portuguese manufacturing organizations (50 valid responses). Moreover, the research is subject to the limitations of the survey methodology, such as possible respondent bias.Practical implications: The Portuguese I4.0 strategy mainly targets small and medium-sized enterprises through a bottom-up approach. Hence, companies need proper methodologies and tools for evaluating I4.0 adoption, identifying their present situation concerning I4.0 and where to focus on improving the process and achieving the intended benefits.Social implications: This research identifies the main perceived benefits and obstacles of adopting I4.0, suggesting avenues for its successful implementation by the Portuguese companies.Originality/value: This study provides a valuable tool for manufacturing companies to identify the factors that need to be improved to create significant growth in the I4.0 Perception Maturity (IPM) index. Therefore, it can support companies in establishing a roadmap for successful I4.0 adoption and improving their performance and competitive position accordingly.

Assessing the Structural Validity of the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score Scale.

The Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) scale is used to assess patient perspectives on knee health. However, the structural validity of the KOOS has not been sufficiently tested; therefore, our objective was to assess the KOOS in a large, multi-site database of patient responses who were receiving care for knee pathology. A cross-sectional study was conducted using the Surgical Outcome System (SOS) database. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to assess the proposed five-factor KOOS using a priori cut-off values. Because model fit indices were not met, a subsequent exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted to identify a parsimonious model. The resulting four-factor structure (i.e., KOOS SF-12) was then assessed using CFA and subjected to multigroup invariance testing. The original KOOS model did not meet rigorous CFA fit recommendations. The KOOS SF-12 did meet model fit recommendations and passed all invariance testing between intervention procedure, sex, and age groups. The KOOS failed to meet model fit recommendations. The KOOS SF-12 met model fit recommendations, maintained a multi-factorial structure, and was invariant across all tested groups. The KOOS did not demonstrate sound structural validity. A refined KOOS SF-12 model that met recommended model fit indices and invariance testing criteria was identified. Our findings provide initial support for a multidimensional KOOS structure (i.e., KOOS SF-12) that is a more psychometrically sound instrument for measuring patient-reported knee health.

Validation and cross-cultural adaptation of the six-dimension scale of nursing performance- arabic version

BackgroundNursing performance is a key indicator of patients’ care quality and safety. Most healthcare research tools are available in the English language; however, nurses around the world can employ these tools if rigorously adapted and cross-culturally validated.Aims and objectivesThis study aims to provide a cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the six-dimension scale of nursing performance to be used among Arabic-speaking nurses.DesignThe study employed a descriptive, correlational design with a cross-sectional approach.MethodsA five-step cross-cultural adaptation process was adopted. The scale was administered to 216 Jordanian nurses between January 2022 to April 2022. SPSS and AMOS were used for descriptive and correlation analyses and testing the six-dimension model through structural equation modeling (SEM).ResultsThe current study produced a valid, reliable, culturally adapted Arabic language version of the six-dimension scale of nursing performance. The internal consistency of the tool was supported by a Cronbach Alpha’s value of 0.99. The model’s goodness of fit indices were: CFI = 0.96, RMSEA = 0.048, and CMIN/df = 1.49. The exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of the scale identified three factors with eigenvalues greater than 1.00., explaining 75.22% of the variance. A subsequent EFA, specifying six factors, yielded 79.79% explained variance. All item factor loadings exceeded 0.30, confirming the scale’s robust factor structure.ConclusionsThis study proved that following a robust cross-cultural adaptation process results in a reliable and valid measure of nursing performance to be used among Arabic-speaking nurses. The study supports the dimensionality of nursing performance as evidenced by the SEM results. Therefore, the findings have the potential to considerably enhance studying nursing performance in healthcare fields in Arabic-speaking nurses.Relevance to clinical practiceThe validation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Arabic version of the Six-Dimension Scale of Nursing Performance have direct implications for improving the quality of nursing services, enhancing patient safety, promoting cultural competence, and supporting the professional growth of Arabic-speaking nurses.

Development and validation of the intellectual property services scale in China

Existing studies have emphasized the crucial role of intellectual property services (IPS) in the advancement of science and technology, but there was still a lack of a valid scale for assessing IPS. Accordingly, this study aimed to develop a reliable instrument to fill this gap. A three-step process of scale development was described: item generation through grounded theory research (n = 14), scale development through exploratory factor analysis (n = 219) and scale assessment through confirmatory factor analysis (n = 191). By analyzing and coding the interview data drawn from IPS agencies in China, the study verified that IPS could be represented as a three-dimensional construct consisting of vocational skills services (VSS), commercial operation services (COS), and value-added business services (VBS). The subsequent exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted to test and modify the IPS scale with 11 items was shown to have acceptable internal consistency reliability, as well as convergent and discriminant validity. The IPS scale could serve as an operational tool for IPS practitioners to measure and identify the problems of service quality and service mode. Additionally, it held significant theoretical value and practical implications for the advancement of intellectual property services industry in China.

Validation of the Spanish version of DYsphagia in MUltiple Sclerosis questionnaire (DYMUS).

Dysphagia is a common symptom in multiple sclerosis that can occur even early in the disease course and can lead to serious complications. Early recognition and treatment can promote comfort, safety and optimal nutritional status. Few dysphagia rating scales are available in Spanish. The aim of this study was to translate the Dysphagia in Multiple Sclerosis Questionnaire (DYMUS) into Spanish and to validate it. Forward and backward translation method was used to translate the original English version of DYMUS into Spanish. A pilot-study with 10 PwMS was carried on in order to improve the intelligibility of the instrument, comprehensibility and content validity of the questionnaire. The questionnaire was filled out by 100 PwMS who were asked a dichotomous question on their swallowing ("Do you have swallowing troubles?"). Descriptive data are presented as median and quartiles for continuous variables and frequency and percentage for categorical ones. Internal consistency reliability was estimated by Cronbach's alfa. Test-retest reliability was estimated by intraclass correlation coefficient. Concurrent validity with a speech and language therapy assessment (SLT-A) was measured with the weighted kappa statistic for the concordance for both dysphagia type and degree categories. Confirmatory factor analysis by means of structural equation models was used to verify the two-factor (solids and liquids) structure of the DYMUS questionnaire. As the goodness of fit evaluation was poor, an additional exploratory factor analysis was carried out. Internal consistency was high. The globus sensation question and the weight loss questions (item 3 and 10) are the least specific with dysphagia symptomatology so they are worst correlated with the sum of the others (item-rest correlation, 0.243 and 0.248, respectively). The test-retest reliability of the DYMUS among 40 patients using ICC was 0.75 (95% CI 0.57 - 0.86). Concurrent validity with SLT-A was poor (weighted kappa 0.37 for dysphagia type and 0.38 for dysphagia degree). The DYMUS questionnaire detected three times more dysphagia (53% versus 17%) than the dichotomous question. Confirmatory factors analysis failed to confirm the bidimensional structure (solid and liquid items) often reported in other validation studies. The subsequent exploratory factor analysis also identified two factors, but with poor interpretability. DYMUS-SP scale is not a sufficiently useful scale to detect dysphagia in PwMS due to the poor concurrent validity and the probable overdiagnosis of the condition; however, it can be helpful as a screening tool when combined with other measures.

Cross Cultural Adaptation and Psychometric Evaluation of the Short Version of Smart Phone Addiction Scale in the Persian Language.

Objective: The addiction pattern of smartphone usage has increased concerns about potential complications. The Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS), a self-administered questionnaire, evaluates smartphone usage and dependency. The study's purpose was to translate and culturally adapt the SAS short-version into the Persian language (SAS-SV-Pr), and evaluate its psychometric properties. Method : The SAS-SV translation used standardized procedures that involved double-forward and backward translations. A convenience sample, from three medical universities in the city of Teheran (n = 250 students), was recruited to complete the SAS-SV and the Internet Addiction Test (IAT). The content validity index (CVI) and the floor and ceiling effect were considered to evaluate content validity. To evaluate internal consistency and test-retest reliability, Cronbach's Alpha and the Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC2.1) were utilized respectively. Criterion validity was measured by calculating Pearson's correlation coefficient for the total scores of SAS-SV-Pr and IAT (Pearson's r correlation coefficient). Construct validity was evaluated using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and ratified with confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results: During translation and cultural adaptation, only minor wording changes were performed. The correlation between the SAS-SV-Pr and IAT was good (r = 0.57), which determined validity. There was high internal consistency (α = 0.88), split-half reliability (0.84), composite reliability (CR) (0.78) and test-retest reliability (ICC (2.1) = 0.89). Subsequent EFA demonstrated an ambiguous factor structure, being border-line between one- and two-factors, which explained 50.28% of total variance. The CFA confirmed that the two-factor solution was preferred. Our data did not show floor or ceiling effects. Conclusion: The Persian SAS-SV is a two-factor structure outcome measure to evaluate the dependency of smartphone users. It has demonstrated satisfactory psychometric properties for validity, reliability and factor structure, and is suitable for screening and research aims among Persian subjects.

Development of a German Physical Literacy Assessment for Children in the Context of Health Promotion-An Explorative Approach.

Addressing physical literacy (PL) has become increasingly relevant to counteract sedentary behaviour in children and youth. We developed an assessment tool to measure and evaluate the promotion of individual PL and its four subdomains: motivation and confidence (the affective dimension), physical competence (physical dimension), knowledge and understanding (cognitive dimension), and participation in physical activity. Within this cross-sectional study, we tested 567 children aged 6-12 years from four primary schools that differed in socioeconomic status (SES). A subsequent exploratory factor analysis conducted to examine the conformity revealed a five-factor structure. The five factors explained 39.8% of the total cumulative variance. Children with a low SES yielded lower scores in all subdomains except participation in physical activity. This effect was most pronounced in motor skills (p &lt; 0.001, r = 0.28). Among the children with a low SES, 16.9% were overweight and 17.4% were obese, compared to 11.5% and 5.4%, respectively, for those with a high SES (p &lt; 0.001). In conclusion, although the assessment tool was largely in line with the postulated structure, further adjustments are necessary in terms of participation and motivation. Nevertheless, this holistic view of PL, taking SES into account, should enable the focused promotion of health and health literacy.

Factor Structure of the Brief Addiction Monitor in a Non-Veteran Substance Use Disorder Outpatient Treatment Sample

BackgroundThe Brief Addiction Monitor (BAM) was developed as a comprehensive substance use disorder (SUD) outcome metric to fill a gap in quality measurement. Research to date has only examined the psychometric performance of this measure in veteran SUD populations. The purpose of the current research is to examine the factor structure and validity in a non-veteran SUD population. MethodsNon-veteran patients admitted to a SUD treatment program (N = 2,227) completed BAM at intake. After confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed to evaluate the measurement model validity of previously defined latent structures, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was used to assess the factor structure and psychometric properties of the BAM within the full sample and within subgroups, specifically racial, referral source (mandated vs. not), and primary SUD diagnosis. ResultsExploratory factor analyses in the full sample supported a 4-factor model (representing Stressors, Alcohol Use, Risk Factors, and Protective Factors) derived from 13 items. Subsequent EFAs conducted separately in each subgroup revealed variability in the number of resulting factors and pattern matrices. The internal consistency also varied among factors and between subgroups; in general, reliability was greatest for the Alcohol Use scale and either poor or questionable for pattern matrices resulting in scales reflecting Risk or Protective Factors. ConclusionFindings from our study suggest that the BAM might not be a reliable and valid instrument for all populations. More research is needed to develop and validate tools that are clinically meaningful and allow clinicians to track recovery progress over time.

Psychometric properties of the emotional processing scale in individuals with psychiatric symptoms and the development of a brief 15-item version

The 25-item Emotional Processing Scale (EPS) can be used with clinical populations, but there is little research on its psychometric properties (factor structure, test–retest reliability, and validity) in individuals with psychiatric symptoms. We administered the EPS-25 to a large sample of people (N = 512) with elevated psychiatric symptoms. We used confirmatory factor analysis to evaluate three a priori models from previous research and then evaluated discriminant and convergent validity against measures of alexithymia (Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20), depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionaire-9), and anxiety symptoms (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7). None of the a priori models achieved acceptable fit, and subsequent exploratory factor analysis did not yield a clear factor solution for the 25 items. A 5-factor model did, however, achieve acceptable fit when we retained only 15 items, and this solution was replicated in a validation sample. Convergent and discriminant validity for this revised version, the EPS-15, was r = − 0.19 to 0.46 vs. TAS-20, r = 0.07− 0.25 vs. PHQ-9, and r = 0.29− 0.57 vs. GAD-7. Test–retest reliability was acceptable (ICC = 0.73). This study strengthens the case for the reliability and validity of the 5-factor structure of the EPS but suggest that only 15 items should be retained. Future studies should further examine the reliability and validity of the EPS-15.

REFINING THE SERVICE ORIENTATION SCALE (SOS-22) FROM INSIDE THE CANADIAN LODGING SECTOR

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to validate and refine, as appropriate, the Service Orientation Scale in the unique context of the Canadian lodging sector, while exploring demographic differences expressed by respondents. Design – The study is based on Groves’ 34-item service orientation scale developed for the hospitality industry. Online self-administration questionnaires were completed by 348 hospitality employees. Methodology/Approach – Confirmatory factor analysis revealed extensive loading issues in Groves’ three-factor model, while also surfacing problems with item inclusion in the four-factor model presented by Kim et al. (2003). Subsequent exploratory factor analysis led to the creation of an improved 22-item service orientation scale (SOS-22). Findings – This research significantly refines the multidimensional employee service orientation scale into a scale that balances the detail of the dimensions with the parsimony of the scale design. The richness of the construct is maintained as the measures span four dimensions: organizational support, service under pressure, customer orientation, and customer relations. As recruiting and retaining employees in the hospitality industry remains a major challenge, the SOS -22 model can be used to improve employee-organization fit at the recruitment stage and help organizations find talent that will improve the customer experience and achieve organizational goals. Originality of the research – The paper demonstrates improved modelling of the service orientation scale (SOS-22) over past iterations that struggles with replication with results both valid and reliable. This research uncovers novel results in the lodging sector of the hospitality industry, while surfacing demographics differences in service orientation, both by gender and job level, missing from earlier studies.

Positive Beliefs about Post-Event Processing in Social Anxiety Disorder

AbstractBackground: Post-event processing (PEP) is an important maintenance factor of social anxiety disorder (SAD). This study examined psychometric properties of the Positive Beliefs about Post-Event Processing Questionnaire (PB-PEPQ; Fisak &amp; Hammond, 2013), which measures metacognitive beliefs about PEP. Method: Participants receiving treatment for SAD (n = 71) and other anxiety and related disorders (n = 266) completed self-report questionnaires at several timepoints. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis did not support the PB-PEPQ's proposed unidimensional model. Subsequent exploratory factor analysis yielded a three-factor structure consisting of engaging in PEP to (1) review negative events (Negative scale), (2) review positive events (Positive scale), and (3) better understand one's social anxiety (Understand scale). Within the SAD subsample, PB-PEPQ scales demonstrated good internal consistency (α = 0.83–0.85) and test–retest reliability (r = 0.65–0.78). Convergent and criterion validity of the PB-PEPQ Negative scale were supported. PB-PEPQ scale scores were significantly higher within the SAD group, as compared with the other groups (generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder and agoraphobia, posttraumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder), supporting the scales’ discriminative validity. Conclusion: Findings support the reliability and validity of the PB-PEPQ in a clinical sample and reveal the measure's multifactorial structure.

Assessing Preschool Child Routines in the Family: A Preliminary Study of the Portuguese Version of the Child Routines Questionnaire - Preschool

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to explore the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Child Routines Questionnaire: Preschool (CRQ:P), a parent-report measure developed to assess daily routines specific to preschool-age children. Participants included 208 parents of preschool children (Mage = 3.97 years old; SD = 0.95; 53.4% boys). Parents also completed measures of family routines (mealtimes) and children’s social skills. A confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that the original CRQ:P five-factor structure did not fit to the data and the subsequent exploratory factor analysis suggested a three-factor solution (Daily Living, Education/Positive Attention and Discipline), accounting for 33.36% of the total variance. Cronbach’s alpha reliability was very good for the Total scale (α = .84), and acceptable-to-good for the three subscales (α range = .68 to .79). Preliminary evidence of validity was shown by weak positive correlations between children’s and family mealtime routines. Also, routines predicted children’s social skills. Differences were found in discipline routines between younger and older children. The results provide initial evidence that the Portuguese version of the CRQ:P is a promising assessment tool that can be used in clinical practice and future empirical research focused on preschool-age children’s routines.

Development and psychometric testing of the \u2018barriers to physical activity during pregnancy scale\u2019 (BPAPS)

BackgroundPregnancy can affect the amount of physical activity that women engage in, so ensuring adequate physical activity in pregnant women can be a challenge. Therefore, there is a need to explore and identify barriers to physical activity in this population. Consequently, this study was conducted in order to develop and validate a scale to assess barriers to physical activity in pregnant populations.MethodsThe study was conducted in two phases. During phase 1, a comprehensive review of the most relevant literature from electronic databases on barriers to physical activity was carried out and appropriate scale items were extracted using a deductive approach. During phase 2, the psychometric properties of the extracted scale items were determined using face, content and construct validity, internal consistency and stability. Qualitative and quantitative face validity was assessed via face-to-face interviews with 30 and 10 pregnant women, respectively. To confirm the qualitative and quantitative content validity, 10 experts in the field of research and instrument design were invited to complete the resulting scale. To assess construct validity, the scale items were further tested among 320 pregnant women attending perinatal clinics at health centers in Ilam, Iran, where data were collected via continuous sampling. The internal consistency and stability of the study were measured by Cronbach’s alpha and intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), respectively.ResultsFollowing a review of the relevant literature, 48 items for the BPAPS were extracted. Subsequent to the assessment of face and content validity, the number of items was reduced to 38. Through a subsequent exploratory factor analysis, the number of items dropped further to 29. These items were then structured under four major factors. Finally, the internal consistency and stability of the scale was confirmed by a Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.824 and a test-retest reliability score of 0.87.ConclusionFindings show that the 29-item scale to assess barriers to physical activity in pregnant populations is a valid and appropriate instrument.

Validation of the Brief Coping Orientation to Problem Experienced (Brief COPE) inventory in people living with HIV/AIDS in Vietnam.

The Brief Coping Orientation to Problem Experienced (Brief COPE) inventory is one of the most widely used instruments in coping research; however, no study has evaluated the psychometric properties of the Brief COPE in the Vietnamese population. This study aimed to validate a culturally appropriate Vietnamese version of the Brief COPE for the evaluation of coping strategies in people living with HIV/AIDS in Vietnam. We translated the Brief COPE into Vietnamese, and it was self-administered among 1,164 HIV-infected patients receiving antiretroviral therapy at a large HIV outpatient clinic in Hanoi between January 2019 and March 2020. Data on demographics and HIV-related information, depression and social support were also collected. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) were conducted to assess construct validity. Content validity, internal consistency, and convergent validity were also assessed. The CFA of a 14-factor structure of the original Brief COPE revealed acceptable model fitness, but poor internal consistency for some subscales. In the subsequent EFA, we found a revised 26-item version which had a six-factor structure consisting of problem-solving, avoidance, humor, social support, religion, and substance use. The final CFA found that the model fitness of the revised scale with fewer factor structures was comparable to that of the original Brief COPE; the internal consistency of the revised scale was even better than that of the original scale. Furthermore, six factors of the revised scale showed anticipated associations with depression and social support.

Diseño y validación de una escala para medir en profesores de Educación Física el uso responsable de las pruebas de condición física (FITPET) (Design and validation of a scale to assess the responsible use of fitness testing in physical education teachers (FITPET))

The aim of this study was to design and validate a scale that would allow the evaluation in Physical Education teachers the responsible use of physical fitness tests related to health. Method: The sample was composed of 374 secondary school teachers (266 men and 108 women), from educational centers belonging to the eight Andalusian provinces, aged between 24 and 67 years (41.92 ± 9.24). Results: Firstly, a 26-item instrument was designed, which obtained item-total correlation values of ≥ .35, except for 5 items. Then, the internal structure of the scale was evaluated and proved to be relevant. The statistical analysis of the items and the subsequent exploratory factor analysis resulted in five factors (orientation of the result, use of participatory styles, the educational approach, methodological rigor, and positive reinforcement), with positive and significant correlations, confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis, factor invariance tests, as well as reliability and convergent and discriminant validity and reliability. The results of the analysis of psychometric properties of the scale were moderate and allowed us to offer a valid and reliable 15-item an ad hoc instrument, with adequate values of validity and reliability, proving its usefulness the evaluation in Physical Education teachers the responsible use of physical fitness tests in their classes.

Procedures Used in Developing and Validating the Quality of Life Scale in the Context of the Ethno-Political Conflicts in Mathare and Kibra, Nairobi City County, Kenya

Slight differences in standard of living, issuing from horizontal inequalities between ethnic groups, are a predicate of ethnopolitical violence in Kenya. Developing and validating a scale to estimate the quality of life differences, between warring ethnic groups, can deepen our understanding of an important precursor of ethnopolitical conflict. From a careful review of poverty and developmental literature, the 16 items used in the Quality of Life Scale emerged. In subsequent exploratory factor analysis, a three-factor solution surfaced, and this was subjected to confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The CFA model scale met the criteria for composite reliability, construct validity, and strict factorial invariance. The scale has enriched our understanding of the three latent dimensions of quality of life that matter most in characterizing the quality of life. First, the indicator "proud about your life" was the strongest factor for latent factor social and physical wellbeing. Second, “can save income”, a proxy for quality of employment. This was the leading indicator for latent factor disposable income. Third, and the indicator “house comfortable to live in” was the notable indicator of latent factor living standards. The Quality of Life Scale can track trends in quality of life of ethnic groups that have a history of ethnopolitical conflict in places like Mathare and Kibra. The scale can be used in other known hotspots of violence in Kenya too where ethnic groups are susceptible to ethnopolitical conflict borne of quality of life differences.

Examining the factorial validity of the Quality of Life Scale

BackgroundQuality of life (QoL) is important to assess in patient care. Researchers have previously claimed validity of the Quality of Life Scale (QOLS) across multiple samples of individuals, but close inspection of results suggest further psychometric investigation of the instrument is warranted. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to: 1) evaluate the proposed five-factor, 15-item and three-factor, 16-item QOLS; 2) if the factor structure could not be confirmed, re-assess the QOLS using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and covariance modeling to identify a parsimonious refinement of the QOLS structure for future investigation.MethodsParticipants varying in age, physical activity level, and identified medical condition(s) were recruited from clinical sites and ResearchMatch. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were performed on the full sample (n = 1036) based on proposed 15- and 16-item QOLS versions. Subsequent EFA and covariance modeling was performed on a random subset of the data (n1 = 518) to identify a more parsimonious version of the QOLS. The psychometric properties of the newly proposed model were confirmed in the remaining half of participants (n2 = 518). Further examination of the scale psychometric properties was completed using invariance testing procedures across sex and health status sub-categories.ResultsNeither the 15- nor 16-item QOLS CFA met model fit recommendations. Subsequent EFA and covariance modeling analyses revealed a one-factor, five-item scale that satisfied contemporary statistical and model fit standards. Follow-up CFA confirmed the revised model structure; however, invariance testing requirements across sex and injury status subgroups were not met.ConclusionsNeither the 15- nor 16-item QOLS exhibited psychometric attributes that support construct validity. Our analyses indicate a new, short-form model, might offer a more appropriate and parsimonious scale from some of the original QOLS items; however, invariance testing across sex and injury status suggested the psychometric properties still vary between sub-groups. Given the scale design concerns and the results of this study, developing a new instrument, or identifying a different, better validated instrument to assess QoL in research and practice is recommended.

Adaptation of the negative effects questionnaire into the Czech context

Objective: The aim of this study was to adapt the Negative Effects Questionnaire (NEQ) into the Czech context and to assess its psychometric properties as well as the extent to which it covers important areas of the negative aspects of psychotherapy. Method: A total of 226 respondents answered an online survey. Confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses were conducted to assess the NEQ factor structure. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the open-ended NEQ item. Results: In terms of confirmatory factor analysis, the six-factor model proposed by the authors of the NEQ did not demonstrate an adequate fit. In a subsequent exploratory factor analysis, a more parsimonious, five-factor solution was proposed instead. Furthermore, a thematic analysis revealed some areas underrepresented in the NEQ, particularly clients’ relationships with their relatives. Conclusions: The NEQ is a reliable instrument with a high added value for research and practice. Several directions for future development are suggested.
