Alkaline Devonian magmatism of the Menorca Island: Tracking the mantle isotopic sources in the realm of the western Paleo-Tethys Ocean

Several locations with alkaline magmatism are recognised in Silurian-Devonian basins along the southern variscan autochthon units (e.g. Central Iberian Zone) of the northern Gondwana margin. The origin of the Devonian basins and their magmatism has not been studied in the context of the passive margin of Gondwana. The basement of Menorca, Balearic Islands, consists of a deep Devonian-Carboniferous basin with mafic igneous rocks, the Tramuntana Gabbros. In this study, we trace the geodynamic setting and isotopic sources of the Tramuntana Gabbros through elemental geochemistry, isotopic geochemistry (SrNd) and UPb geochronology in zircons. These gabbros are the product of an intraplate alkaline magmatism with immobile trace element and REE contents similar to those of Ocean Island Basalts. Average 87Sr/86Sr(370) of 0.708456 and εNd(370) of +4.0 indicate a source similar to a Type-2 enriched mantle with average TDM of 665 Ma, suggesting a relatively old metasomatized mantle. Concordant UPb ages of c. 597 Ma (Ediacaran, radiometric age) from a single population of 31 zircons separated from the Tramuntana Gabbros (Devonian, biostratigraphic age) reinforce the presence of older units in the corresponding lithospheric mantle. The Tramuntana Gabbros and the Devonian-Carboniferous sequences of Menorca limit the westward extension of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean, whose development never reached these westernmost regions. Assuming a common sublithospheric mantle source for the peri-Gondwanic Devonian alkaline rocks and considering the previous Cadomian (Neoproterozoic) subduction to be the most favourable origin of the separated zircons, the bulk rock TDM and zircon UPb data obtained from the Tramuntana Gabbros track the mixing, recycling, and mantle accretion in this peri-Gondwanic section from Precambrian to Devonian times.

Major, trace element and Sr-Nd isotope evidence for a sublithospheric mantle source for the Umkondo large igneous province

The Mesoproterozoic (1.11 Ga) Umkondo large igneous province (LIP) in southern Africa and Antarctica was emplaced in < 5 Myr and is dominated by low-Ti tholeiitic doleritic-gabbroic sills. It is of particular interest because it is the least studied LIP in southern Africa with both sublithospheric and lithospheric mantle sources proposed and it coincides with the early assembly of Rodinia, so it has importance in understanding the nature of magmatism and tectonics in and around the Kalahari craton during the Mesoproterozoic. In this study, we compiled a large database of existing (∼750) and new (∼100) major and trace element data for the Umkondo province, as well as 42 new Sr-Nd isotopic measurements, to provide constraints on its magma sources and geochemical evolution. Major element compositional variations in the low-Ti tholeiites are explained by low-pressure (1 kbar) three-phase fractional crystallisation (olivine, clinopyroxene and plagioclase) of a parent magma with ∼ 10 wt.% MgO in oxidising conditions (QFM + 1). Inverse models show that the low-Ti tholeiitic magmas were derived as residual melts after the crystallization of 12%–33% olivine from primary komatiitic-basaltic magmas (up to ∼ 20 wt.% MgO) in equilibrium with mantle olivine (Fo90). Low Sm/Yb and TiO2/Yb-Nb/Yb indicate that the primary magmas were derived by 2%–20% shallow (40–50 km) partial melting of spinel lherzolite. High Sm/Yb is restricted to dyke swarms and may imply limited magma production from deeper (up to ∼ 70 km) garnet lherzolite-like sources. The low-Ti tholeiites of the Umkondo province are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (Rb-Sr-Cs-K) and depleted in high-field strength elements (Zr-Hf-Nb-Ta), indicating the involvement of crustal material and/or the subcontinental lithospheric mantle. This is supported by covariations in Th/Nb, Nb/Yb, Nb/La and Ce/Sm with generally negative ΔNb. Sr-Nd isotopes lend support to the notion that the Umkondo magmas were derived from depleted and/or enriched sublithospheric mantle sources and subsequently contaminated by enriched lithospheric material during emplacement (initial (at 1.11 Ga) 87Sr/86Sr between 0.704820 and 0.737464 and εNd between −8.9 and +5.3). The Vredefort sills are significant as they display the most depleted Sr-Nd isotopic signatures (average initial 87Sr/86Sr of 0.705342 and average εNd of 0.4) and are the least contaminated magma suite in the Umkondo province. Because of (i) the large volume of low-Ti magmas, (ii) evidence of a primary hot and MgO-rich (komatiitic) magma, and (iii) the short duration of magmatism, we suggest that the Umkondo province was formed by plume-induced melting of the sublithospheric mantle beneath the Kalahari craton in an extensional setting. This contrasts with previous suggestions that the heat source developed in response to the “thermal insulation” of the mantle beneath a thickened Kalahari craton in the absence of a mantle plume. There is further evidence from the elevated Zn/Fe that the sublithospheric mantle was lithologically heterogeneous and consisted of mixed peridotite and pyroxenite domains. There is a general lack of ultramafic cumulates in the low-Ti magma suite that may imply there was deeper ponding and storage of the primary magmas that fractionated large quantities of ultramafic rocks. There is also a paucity of high-Ti rocks in the Umkondo province that may reflect limited direct melting of the lithospheric mantle or that they are simply not as well-preserved in this province compared to the Karoo province. The similar trace element and Sr-Nd isotopic compositions of the Umkondo sills in southern Africa with the Borgmassivet sills in Antarctica support the concept that the Kalahari craton and Grunehogna terrane were adjoined at 1.11 Ga. The timing of the Umkondo province indicates there was localised lithospheric extension and upwelling asthenospheric mantle during a time of dominantly compressional tectonics on Earth at the end of the ‘boring billion’.

Carbonatite and ultrabasic magmatism at Toro Ankole and Virunga, western branch of the East African Rift system

The western branch of the East African Rift hosts four main Neogene-Quaternary volcanic provinces, characterized by products with wide chemical and mineralogical variability. This study focuses on the two northernmost volcanic provinces, Toro Ankole where ∼0.2 Ma-old carbonatites, melilitites and kamafugites, erupted together with foidites, and Virunga where ∼13–9 Ma-old strongly and mildly alkaline rocks, from nephelinite up to trachytes crop out. Petrographic and whole/rock geochemical characteristics (low SiO2, high CaO and K2O, coupled with LILE enrichment) of 49 samples from Toro Ankole and 5 samples from Virunga (tephrites, trachybasalts and trachyandesites) point out enriched and heterogeneous sub-lithospheric mantle sources. The nature of the ultramafic nodules occasionally associated to the investigated samples highlights the presence of metasomatic veins variably enriched in clinopyroxene, phlogopite, carbonate, apatite, Ti-magnetite and titanite. 143Nd/144Nd ratios of Toro Ankole rocks are below ChUR (0.51249–0.51260), and all but two carbonatite lavas have 87Sr/86Sr ˃ BSE (0.7046–0.7056). Virunga lavas display less radiogenic 143Nd/144Nd (0.51235–0.51249) and more radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7058–0.7071). Lead isotopes are all above the NHRL (206Pb/204Pb mostly in the range 19.12–19.63). δ11B values cover the whole OIB range (−8.3 to −3.3 ‰), but with the exception of some Toro Ankole samples with notably heavier compositions (−1.9 to 6.6), here linked to the carbonate enrichment. The differences in the isotopic features observed between Toro Ankole and Virunga products may reflect a north to south change of the lithospheric mantle source in terms of composition, mineralogy and depth of melting. Toro Ankole phlogopite-bearing mantle is more intensely metasomatized by a 87Sr- and 11B-rich component (as altered oceanic crust or subducted carbonates) compare to that one beneath Virunga, in which the metasomes might contain amphibole rather than phlogopite. Low degree of partial melting of the metasomatized mantle produces magmas of carbonatitic and ultrabasic/ultrapotassic compositions of the western rift branch.

Geochemistry of Precambrian dyke swarms in the Singhbhum craton, India: Implications for recycled crustal components in the mantle source

The Singhbhum craton, eastern India records multiple stages of emplacement of Precambrian dyke swarms with contrasting petrogenetic models proposed for their formation. In this study, we document elemental and Sr-Nd isotopic data for three major dyke swarms in the southern part of the craton, including the ca. 2.7 Ga Ghatgaon dyke swarm, the Early Proterozoic Keonjhar dyke swarm and the ca. 1.76 Ga Pipilia dyke swarm. Dyke compositions are dominated by basalt and basaltic andesite with minor andesite, showing trace element signatures typical of continental crustal rocks. Age-corrected Nd isotopic data for Ghatgaon (εNdt = −4.8 to + 4.6), Keonjhar (εNdt = −11.9 to + 3.8), and Pipilia (a single sample with εNdt = −8.8) dyke swarms display substantial variations. The lack of magma compositions that could indicate the presence of elevated mantle potential temperature among the rocks suggests melting regime was likely similar to the ambient mantle. The Dy/Yb and Dy/Dy* systematics of the rocks indicates melting occurred between spinel-stable depths and the spinel-garnet transition zone. The dominantly mafic compositions of the rocks and ubiquitous continental crustal trace element signature are best explained by peridotite source with recycled crustal components, probably in the form of pyroxenites. Our new Nd isotopic data, which argue against any simple secular evolution trend invoked in previous studies, indicate that crustal recycling was likely an episodic phenomenon rather than a discrete, single-stage process since the Archean. Geochemical modelling indicates that a sublithospheric mantle source with (10% or less) recycled crustal components satisfactorily explains the trace element variations of the dyke swarms.

Geochemistry of dolerite intrusions of the southeastern Main Karoo Basin, South Africa: Magma evolution, evidence for thermogenic gas sequestration, and potential implications for the early Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event

The igneous intrusions of the Karoo Large Igneous Province (LIP) provide critical information on the magma plumbing system, which served as source rock maturation agent for organic-rich sedimentary rocks of the Main Karoo Basin as well as pathway and barrier to subsurface fluid flow. Here, we present results from the research borehole KWV-01 drilled in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The intersected succession, spanning the Dwyka to the lower Beaufort Group, provides representative samples of the Karoo LIP magma plumbing system.Using whole-rock and Sr-Nd isotope analyses, our data suggest that primary melts were derived from a sub-lithospheric mantle source and acquired a subduction signature through interaction with a metasomatised lithospheric mantle. Three magma types identified within this study show a geochemical overlap with previously reported data from the Golden Valley Sill Complex, ca. 220 km to the NW of the analysed borehole. The results of MELTS and EC-RAFC modelling on the three magma types reveal that their compositional differences are related to variable degrees of fractional crystallisation and contamination by lower crustal rocks and/or the sedimentary host rocks of the Main Karoo Basin.Our results indicate that at least one of the sills acted as fractured reservoir, thereby providing evidence that igneous intrusions are important for CO2 sequestration. We quantified the implications of this process for the Karoo LIP-related Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event using the thermogenic gas budget produced by state-of-the-art computer simulations and tested various end-member scenarios for partial thermogenic gas sequestration. In agreement with recent studies, we show that all the flat parts of the Karoo sills acted as sequestration reservoirs. Our results have general implications for LIP volcanism in organic-rich basins, suggesting that a good first-order approximation of thermogenic gas emission is half the amount mobilised in the contact aureoles of LIP plumbing systems.

Sublithospheric melt input in cratonic lamproites

AbstractCratonic lamproites are diamondiferous ultrapotassic rocks that are emplaced through thick continental lithosphere and thought to derive from melting of metasomatized (i.e., geochemically enriched) regions of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM). We explored the alternative hypothesis that melts sourced from sublithospheric (i.e., convective mantle) sources dominate the genesis of cratonic lamproites. Supporting evidence includes a robust linear correlation between the Mg/Fe ratios of xenocrystic and magmatic olivine in lamproites worldwide, overlapping the trend observed for kimberlite olivine. This indicates that, similar to kimberlites, primary lamproite melts originate from broadly similar sublithospheric mantle sources before assimilating SCLM material of variable composition. The lamproites are also characterized by a direct correlation between olivine Mg/Fe ratio and bulk-lamproite K2O/Al2O3, an index of potassium enrichment in the melt that is independent of mantle-xenocryst entrainment and magmatic differentiation. Quantitative modeling indicates that this correlation results from the interaction between carbonate-bearing sublithospheric melt and phlogopite-rich wall rocks in the SCLM. Our data show that cratonic lamproites and kimberlites have similar mantle sources in the convective mantle, with lamproites acquiring their peculiar enrichment in K by interaction with metasomatized SCLM en route to the surface. Modification of sublithospheric melts during transit through the continental lithosphere might represent a common process for the genesis of alkaline mafic/ultramafic magmas.

Zinc isotopic systematics of the Mt. Baekdu and Jeju Island intraplate basalts in Korea, and implications for mantle source lithologies

Zinc isotope data for late Cenozoic intraplate basalts from Mt. Baekdu (North Korea) and Jeju Island (South Korea) were determined to characterize their mantle source lithologies. The average δ66Zn values (relative to JMC-Lyon) are 0.34‰ ± 0.08‰ (2SD; N = 13) for the Mt. Baekdu basalts and 0.37‰ ± 0.08‰ (2SD; N = 12) for the Jeju basalts, which are higher than values for refractory peridotites (0.18‰ ± 0.06‰) from the lithospheric mantle beneath the North China Craton. Given that Zn isotopic fractionation is limited during lithospheric processes, such as crustal contamination, magmatic differentiation, degassing, or thermal/chemical diffusion, the elevated δ66Zn values indicate the incorporation of recycled carbonates into the sub-lithospheric mantle source. Plots of Zn/Fe versus δ66Zn or δ26Mg for the Korean basalts can be explained by mixing of at least three source lithologies: (1) carbonated peridotite; (2) recycled siliciclastic sediments; and (3) eclogite. Strontium–Nd–Pb isotopic systematics show that the mantle source follows the DMM-EM1 array for the Mt. Baekdu basalts and a DMM-EM2 array for the Jeju basalts. Both the enriched components have isotopically light Zn and heavy Mg, which are typical of recycled siliciclastic sediments. Combined with the Pb isotope and trace element data, the Zn isotopic compositions suggest that the EM1 component could be ancient K-hollandite-bearing siliciclastic sediments and the EM2 component could be recently recycled clay-rich pelagic sediments.

Evolution of mafic lavas in Central Anatolia: Mantle source domains

Abstract We present new Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopic data on mafic lavas from the Sivas, Develidağ, Erciyes, and Erkilet volcanic complexes in central Turkey and Tendürek in eastern Turkey to evaluate the mantle sources for volcanism in the context of the geodynamic evolution of the Anatolian microplate. Early Miocene through Quaternary volcanism in Western Anatolia and latest Miocene through Quaternary activity in Central Anatolia were dominated by contributions from two distinct source regions: heterogeneous metasomatized or subduction-modified lithosphere, and roughly homogeneous sublithospheric ambient upper mantle; we model the source contributions through mixing between three end members. The sublithospheric mantle source plots close to the Northern Hemisphere reference line (NHRL) with radiogenic 206Pb/204Pb of ∼19.15, while the other contributions plot substantially above the NHRL in Pb isotope space. The lithospheric source is heterogeneous, resulting from variable pollution by subduction-related processes likely including direct incorporation of sediment and/or mélange; its range in radiogenic isotopes is defined by regional oceanic sediment and ultrapotassic melts of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle. The geochemical impact of this contribution is disproportionately large, given that subduction-modified lithosphere and/or ocean sediment dominates the Pb isotope signatures of mafic Anatolian lavas. Subduction of the Aegean or Tethyan seafloor, associated with marked crustal shortening, took place throughout the region until ca. 16–17 Ma, after which time broad delamination of the thickened lower crust and/or the Tethyan slab beneath Central Anatolia allowed for sediment and/or mélange and slab-derived fluids to be released into the overlying evolving modified mantle. Aggregation of melts derived from both mantle and lithospheric domains was made possible by upwelling of warm asthenospheric material moving around and through the complexly torn younger Aegean-Cyprean slab that dips steeply to the north beneath southern Anatolia.

Sub-lithospheric mantle sources for overlapping southern African Large Igneous Provinces

AbstractAt least four spatially overlapping Large Igneous Provinces, each of which generated ~1 x 106 km3 or more of basaltic magmas over short time intervals (&amp;lt;5 m.y.), were emplaced onto and into the Kaapvaal Craton between 2.7 and 0.18 Ga: Ventersdorp (2 720 Ma, ~0.7 x 106 km3), Bushveld (2 056 Ma, ~1.5 x 106 km3), Umkondo (1 105 Ma, ~2 x 106 km3) and Karoo (182 Ma, ~3 x 106 km3). Each of these has been suggested to have been derived from melting of sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) sources, but this is precluded because: (1) each widespread heating event sufficient to generate 1 to 2 x 106 km3 of basalt from the Kaapvaal SCLM (volume = 122 to 152 x 106 km3) would increase residual Mg# by 0.5 to 2 units, depending on degree of melting, and source and melt composition, causing significant depletion in already-depleted mantle, (2) repeated refertilization of the Kaapvaal SCLM would necessarily increase its bulk density, compromising its long-term buoyancy and stability, and (3) raising SCLM temperatures to the peridotite solidus would also have repeatedly destroyed lithospheric diamonds by heating and oxidation, which clearly did not happen. It is far more likely, therefore, that the Kaapvaal LIPs were generated from sub-lithospheric sources, and that their diverse geochemical and isotopic signatures represent variable assimilation of continental crustal components. Combined Sr and Nd isotopic data (n = 641) for the vast volumetric majority of Karoo low-Ti tholeiitic magmatic products can be successfully modelled as an AFC mixing array between a plume-derived parental basalt, with &amp;lt;10% of a granitic component derived from 1.1 Ga Namaqua-Natal crust. Archaean crustal materials are far too evolved (εNd ~ -35) to represent viable contaminants. However, a very minor volume of geographically-restricted (and over-analysed) Karoo magmas, including picrites, nephelinites, meimechites and other unusual rocks may represent low-degree melting products of small, ancient, enriched domains in the Kaapvaal SCLM, generated locally during the ascent of large-volume, plume-derived melts. The SCLM-derived rocks comprise the well-known high-Ti (&amp;gt;2 to 3 wt.% TiO2) magma group, have εNd, 182 values between +10.5 and -20.9, and are characteristically enriched in Sr (up to 1 500 ppm), suggesting a possible connection to kimberlite, lamproite and carbonatite magmatism. These arguments may apply to continental LIPs in general, although at present, there are insufficient combined Sr + Nd isotopic data with which to robustly assess the genesis of other southern African LIPs, including Ventersdorp (n = 0), Bushveld (n = 55) and Umkondo (n = 18).

Volatile concentrations in olivine-hosted melt inclusions from meimechite and melanephelinite lavas of the Siberian Traps Large Igneous Province: Evidence for flux-related high-Ti, high-Mg magmatism

The origin of high-Mg melts remains one of the most highly debated questions in igneous petrology. There are two contrasting points of view, namely, (1) melt initiation in a rising high-temperature plume, and (2) mantle melting due to fluxing by water. To address this question we determined H2O, CO2, F, Cl and S concentrations in olivine-hosted melt inclusions of high-Mg volcanic rocks of the Siberian Traps Large Igneous Province that bracket the main pulse of volcanism at about 252–250 Ma, and can be classified as melanephelinites and meimechites. Both rock types belong to the high-Ti rock series. Correcting measured H2O, CO2, F, Cl and S concentrations in homogenized primary meimechite melt inclusions to primary meimechite melt composition using experimental melt compositions resulted in corrected melt-inclusion, volatile compositions of ~3.88 wt% H2O, ~1477 ppm CO2, ~4214 ppm F, ~2.08 wt% Cl and ~2490 ppm S. These values are viewed as minimum estimates for the original volatile concentrations in the melt because of the high probability for degassing during melt crystallization and/or during experiment homogenization. Olivine-hosted homogenized melt inclusions from melanephelinites yielded lower corrected concentrations of ~1.06 wt% H2O, ~998 ppm CO2, ~3242 ppm F, ~607 ppm Cl and ~2131 ppm S. We also measured water concentrations in clinopyroxenes of melanephelinites by FTIR, obtaining values as high as 133 ppm H2O, which corresponds to 0.91 wt% in the melt, in general agreement with data obtained by SIMS on the olivine-hosted melt inclusions. Olivine grains from melanephelinites are characterized by evolved compositions (Fo 0.80–0.86). Extrapolation to a primitive melanephelinite melt by simple fractional crystallization suggests that it could also contain high H2O concentrations (up to ~ 3 wt%). Analyzed meimechite and melanephelinite whole-rock samples are characterized by trace-element patterns that are typical of mantle-derived melts and by Sr-Nd isotope ratios that exclude crustal contamination or derivation from ancient lithospheric mantle. Thus, high volatile concentrations can be attributed to sublithospheric mantle source regions. This supports the notion that high-Mg melts form by volatile fluxing of the asthenospheric mantle rather than by decompression melting under relatively dry conditions of a rising abnormally high-temperature mantle plume.

Off-axis volcano-tectonic activity during continental rifting: Insights from the transversal Goba-Bonga lineament, Main Ethiopian Rift (East Africa)

The Main Ethiopian Rift, East Africa, is characterized by the presence of major, enigmatic structures which strike approximately orthogonal to the trend of the rift valley. These structures are marked by important deformation and magmatic activity in an off-axis position in the plateaus surrounding the rift. In this study, we present new structural data based on a remote and field analysis, complemented with analogue modelling experiments, and new geochemical analysis of volcanic rocks sampled in different portions of one of these transversal structures: the Goba-Bonga volcano-tectonic lineament (GBVL). This integrated analysis shows that the GBVL is associated with roughly E–W-trending prominent volcano-tectonic activity affecting the western plateau. Within the rift floor, the approximately E–W alignment of Awasa and Corbetti calderas likely represent expressions of the GBVL. Conversely, no tectonic or volcanic features of similar (E–W) orientation have been recognized on the eastern plateau. Analogue modelling suggests that the volcano-tectonic features of the GBVL have probably been controlled by the presence of a roughly E–W striking pre-existing discontinuity beneath the western plateau, which did not extend beneath the eastern plateau. Geochemical analysis supports this interpretation and indicates that, although magmas have the same sub-lithospheric mantle source, limited differences in magma evolution displayed by products found along the GBVL may be ascribed to the different tectonic framework to the west, to the east, and in the axial zone of the rift. These results support the importance of the heterogeneous nature of the lithosphere and the spatial variations of its structure in controlling the architecture of continental rifts and the distribution of the related volcano-tectonic activity.

New K–AR ages of tchabal mbabo alkaline volcano massif, Cameroon volcanic line and adamawa plateau (central Africa)

Tchabal Mbabo in Central Africa is a voluminous volcano massif composed of alkali lava series. K-Ar geochronology data obtained from three samples of basanite - trachyandesite composition defined at least two volcanic activities. The first at end Eocene (38.22 ± 0.80 Ma) and the second during Oligocene (28.88 ± 0.61 and 28.60 ± 0.60Ma). The distribution of different ages along the Cameroon Volcanic Line is difficult to council with any migration of magmatic activity, as previously suggested. The most realistic scenario for the formation of Cameroon Line is that the ascent of lavas has been favored by the crustal discontinuities inherited from the Pan-African orogeny and reactivated during Mesozoic and Cenozoic. ICP MS and ICP AES analyses show that basanite lavas are the result of 2 % melting of sub-lithospheric mantle source containing garnet and phlogopite phases; the trachyandesites are formed by fractional crystallization of K-feldspar, amphibole, clinopyroxene and Fe-Ti oxides.

Geochemistry of Paraná-Etendeka basalts from Misiones, Argentina: Some new insights into the petrogenesis of high-Ti continental flood basalts

The Early Cretaceous (∼135–131 Ma) Paraná-Etendeka continental flood basalts, preserved in bulk in the Paraná basin of southern Brazil and vicinity, have been divided into low-Ti and high-Ti types that govern the southern and northern halves of the basin, respectively. We have examined a new sample set from the southern margin of the northern high-Ti segment of Paraná basalts in Misiones, northeastern Argentina. These basalts are strongly to moderately enriched in TiO2 (2–4 wt.%), have relatively high Ti/Y (300–500), low MgO (3.5–6.5 wt.%), and high Fe (FeO(tot) 12–14 wt.%) and belong to the Pitanga and Paranapanema magma types of Peate et al. (1992). Nd and Sr isotope compositions are quite unvarying with εNd (at 133 Ma) values of −4.6 to −3.6 and initial 87Sr/86Sr of 0.7054–0.7059 and show no variation with fractionation. Compared to high-Ti lavas in the central and northern parts of the Paraná high-Ti basalt segment, the lavas from Misiones are similar to those in the northeastern magin of the basin but less radiogenic in initial Nd isotope composition than those in the central part. This variation probably reflects mixed EM1-EM2 source components in the sublithospheric mantle. A polybaric melt model of a sublithospheric mantle source at the garnet lherzolite-spinel lherzolite transition is compatible with the observed Ti budget of the Pitanga and Paranapanema lavas, regardless of the Nd isotope composition of their purported source.

Low-3He/4He sublithospheric mantle source for the most magnesian magmas of the Karoo large igneous province

The massive outpourings of Karoo and Ferrar continental flood basalts (CFBs) ∼180 Ma ago mark the initial Jurassic rifting stages of the Gondwana supercontinent. The origin and sources of these eruptions have been debated for decades, largely due to difficulties in defining their parental melt and mantle source characteristics. Recent findings of Fe- and Mg-rich dikes (depleted ferropicrite suite) from Vestfjella, western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, have shed light on the composition of the deep sub-Gondwanan mantle: these magmas have been connected to upper mantle sources presently sampled by the Southwest Indian Ocean mid-ocean ridge basalts (SWIR MORBs) or to high 3He/4He plume-entrained non-chondritic primitive mantle sources formed early in Earth's history. In an attempt to determine their He isotopic composition and relative contributions from magmatic, cosmogenic, and radiogenic He sources, we performed in-vacuo stepwise crushing and melting analyses of olivine mineral separates, some of which were abraded to remove the outer layer of the grains. The best estimate for the mantle isotopic composition is given by a sample with the highest amount of He released (>50%) during the first crushing step of an abraded coarse fraction. It has a 3He/4He of 7.03±0.23 (2σ) times the atmospheric ratio (Ra), which is indistinguishable from those measured from SWIR MORBs (6.3–7.3 Ra; source 3He/4He ∼6.4–7.6 Ra at 180 Ma) and notably lower than in the most primitive lavas from the North Atlantic Igneous Province (up to 50 Ra), considered to represent the epitome magmas from non-chondritic primitive mantle sources. Previously published trace element and isotopic (Sr, Nd, and Pb) compositions do not suggest a direct genetic link to any modern hotspot of Indian or southern Atlantic Oceans. Although influence of a mantle plume cannot be ruled out, the high magma temperatures and SWIR MORB-like geochemistry of the suite are best explained by supercontinent insulation of a precursory Indian Ocean upper mantle source. Such a model is also supported by the majority of the recent studies on the structure, geochronology, and petrology of the Karoo CFBs.

Elemental, lead and sulfur isotopic compositions of galena from Kola carbonatites, Russia – implications for melt and mantle evolution

AbstractGalena from four REE-rich (Khibina, Sallanlatvi, Seblyavr, Vuoriyarvi) and REE-poor (Kovdor) carbonatites, as well as hydrothermal veins (Khibina) all from the Devonian Kola Alkaline Province of northwestern Russia was analysed for trace elements and Pb and S isotope compositions. Microprobe analyses show that the only detectable elements in galena are Bi and Ag and these vary from not detectable to 2.23 and not detectable to 0.43 wt.% respectively. Three distinct galena groups can be recognized using Bi and Ag contents, which differ from groupings based on Pb isotope data. The Pb isotope ratios show significant spread with 206Pb/204Pb ratios (16.79 to 18.99), 207Pb/204Pb (15.22 to 15.58) and 208Pb/204Pb ratios (36.75 to 38.62). A near-linear array in a 207Pb/204Pb vs.206Pb/204Pb ratio diagram is consistent with mixing between distinct mantle sources, one of which formed during a major differentiation event in the late Archaean or earlier. The S isotopic composition (δ34S) of galena from carbonatites is significantly lighter (–6.7 to –10.3% Canyon Diablo Troilite (CDT) from REE-rich Khibina, Seblyavr and Vuoriyarvi carbonatites, and – 3.2% CDT from REE-poor Kovdor carbonatites) than the mantle value of 0%. Although there is no correlation between S and any of the Pb isotope ratios, Bi and Ag abundances correlate negatively with δ34S values. The variations in the isotopic composition of Pb are attributed to partial melting of an isotopically heterogeneous mantle source, while those of δ34S (together with Bi and Ag abundances) are considered to be process driven. Although variation in Pb isotope values between complexes might reflect different degrees of interaction between carbonatitic melts and continental crust or metasomatized lithosphere, the published noble gas and C, O, Sr, Nd and Hf isotopic data suggest that the variable Pb isotope ratios are best attributed to isotopic differences preserved within a sub-lithospheric mantle source. Different Pb isotopic compositions of galena from the same complex are consistent with a model of magma replenishment by carbonatitic melts/fluids each marked by quite different Pb isotopic compositions.

The earliest low and high δ18O caldera-forming eruptions of the Yellowstone plume: implications for the 30–40 Ma Oregon calderas and speculations on plume-triggered delaminations

We present new isotopic and trace element data for four eruptive centers in Oregon: Wildcat Mountain (40 Ma), Crooked River (32–28 Ma), Tower Mountain (32 Ma), and Mohawk River (32 Ma). The first three calderas are located too far east to be sourced through renewed subduction of the Farallon slab following accretion of the Yellowstone-produced Siletzia terrane at ~50 Ma. Basalts of the three eastern eruptive centers yield high Nb/Yb and Th/Yb ratios, indicating an enriched sublithospheric mantle source, while Mohawk River yields trace element and isotopic (δ18O and εHf) values that correlate with its location above a subduction zone. The voluminous rhyolitic tuffs and lavas of Crooked River (41 x 27 km) have δ18Ozircon values that include seven low δ18Ozircon units (1.8–4.5 ‰), one high δ18Ozircon unit (7.4–8.8 ‰), and two units with heterogeneous zircons (2.0–9.0 ‰), similar to younger Yellowstone-Snake River Plain rhyolites. In order to produce these low δ18O values, a large heat source, widespread hydrothermal circulation, and repeated remelting are all required. In contrast, Wildcat Mountain and Tower Mountain rocks yield high δ18Ozircon values (6.4–7.9 ‰) and normal to low εHfi values (5.2–12.6), indicating crustal melting of high-δ18O supracrustal rocks. We propose that these calderas were produced by the first appearance of the Yellowstone plume east of the Cascadia subduction zone, which is supported by plate reconstructions that put the Yellowstone plume under Crooked River at 32–28 Ma. Given the eastern location of these calderas along the suture of the accreted Siletzia terrane and North America, we suggest that the Yellowstone hotspot is directly responsible for magmatism at Crooked River, and for plume-assisted delamination of portions of the edge of the Blue Mountains that produced the Tower Mountain magmas, while the older Wildcat Mountain magmas are related to suture zone instabilities that were created following accretion of the Siletzia terrane.

Ulkan-Dzhugdzhur ore-bearing anorthosite-rapakivi granite-peralkaline granite association, Siberian Craton: Age, tectonic setting, sources, and metallogeny

The paper systematizes and integrates the results of geological, isotopic geochronological, and geochemical studies of the igneous rocks that make up the Ulkan-Dzhugdzhur anorthosite-rapakivi granite-peralkaline granite association and related mineralization. This association is a typical example of anorogenic igneous rocks that formed in the within-plate geodynamic setting most likely under effect of the mantle superplume, which was active in the territory of the Siberian Craton 1.75–1.70 Ga ago. The igneous rock association formed in a discrete regime that reflected the pulsatory evolution of a sublithospheric mantle source. The prerift (1736–1727 Ma) and rift proper (1722–1705 Ma) stages and a number of substages are distinguished. All igneous rocks pertaining to this association have mixed mantle-crustal origin. Basic rocks crystallized from the OIB-type basaltic magma, which underwent crustal contamination at various depths. Felsic rocks are products of mantle and crustal magma mixing. The contribution of mantle component progressively increased in a time-dependent sequence: moderately alkaline subsolvus granite → moderately alkaline and alkaline hypersolvus granites → peralkaline hypersolvus granite. All endogenic deposits in the studied district are related to a single source represented by the mantle plume and its derivatives. The Fe-Ti-apatite deposits hosted in anorthosite formed as a result of intense lower crustal contamination of basaltic magma near the Moho discontinuity and two stages of fractional crystallization at lower and upper crustal depth levels. The rare-metal deposits are genetically related to peralkaline granite. Formation of uranium deposits was most likely caused by Middle Riphean rejuvenation of the region, which also involved rocks of the Ulkan-Dzhugdzhur association.

Magmatic sources of dikes and veins in the Moncha Tundra Massif, Baltic Shield: Isotopic-geochronologic and geochemical evidence

The dike-vein complex of the Moncha Tundra Massif comprises dolerites, gabbro-pegmatites, and aplites. The dolerite dikes are classified into three groups: high-Ti ferrodolerites, ferrodolerites, low-Ti and low-Fe gabbro-dolerites. The U-Pb age of the ferrodolerites is 2505 ± 8 Ma, and the amphibole-plagioclase metagabbroids hosting a ferrodolerite dike are dated at 2516 ± 12 Ma. Data on the U-Pb isotopic system of zircon from the gabbro-pegmatites and titanite from the aplites indicate that the late magmatic evolution of the Moncha Tundra Massif proceeded at 2445 ± 1.7 Ma, and the youngest magmatic events in the massif related to the Svecofennian orogeny occurred at 1900 ± 9 Ma. The data obtained on the Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic systems and the distribution of trace elements and REE in rocks of the dike-vein complex of the massifs provide insight into the composition of the sources from which the parental magmas were derived. The high-Ti ferrodolerites were melted out of a deep-sitting plume source that contained an asthenospheric component. The ferrodolerites were derived from a mantle MORB-type source that contained a crustal component. The parental melts of the gabbro-dolerites were melted out of the lithospheric mantle depleted in incompatible elements after Archean crust-forming processes above an ascending mantle plume, with the participation of a crustal component. The gabbro-dolerites and the rocks of the layered complex of the Moncha Tundra Massif exhibit similar geochemical characteristics, which suggest that their parental melts could be derived from similar sources but with more clearly pronounced crustal contamination of the parental melts of the rocks of the massif itself. The geochemical traits of the gabbro-pegmatites are thought to be explained not only by the enrichment of the residual magmas in trace elements and a contribution of a crustal component but also by the uneven effect of sublithospheric mantle sources. The aplites were derived from a sialic crustal source.

Petrogenetic significance of ocellar camptonite dykes in the Ditrău Alkaline Massif, Romania

Abstract Camptonite dykes intrude the rift-related Mesozoic igneous body of the Ditrau Alkaline Massif, Eastern Carpathians, Romania. We present and discuss mineral chemical data, major and trace elements, and the Nd isotopic compositions of the dykes in order to define their nature and origin. The dykes are classified as the clinopyroxene-bearing (camptonite-I) and clinopyroxene-free (camptonite-II) varieties. Camptonite-I consists of aluminian–ferroan diopside phenocrysts accompanied by kaersutite, subordinate Ti-rich annite, albite to oligoclase and abundant calcite–albite ocelli. Camptonite-II comprises K-rich hastingsite to magnesiohastingsite, Ti-rich annite, albite to andesine, abundant accessory titanite and apatite, and silicate ocelli filled mainly with plagioclase (An4–34). Age-corrected 143Nd/144Nd ratios vary from 0.51258 to 0.51269. The high eNd values of + 4.0 to + 6.1 which are consistent with intra-plate composition, together with light rare earth element (LREE), large ion lithophile element (LILE) and high field strength element (HFSE) enrichment in the camptonites is ascribed to the formation of small melt batches of a metasomatised sub-lithospheric mantle source. The presence of an asthenospheric ‘high μ’ ocean island basalt (HIMU-OIB)-type mantle component in the source region has also been revealed. A 1–4% degree of partial melting of an enriched garnet lherzolite mantle source containing pargasitic amphibole followed by fractionation is inferred to have been involved in the generation of the camptonites. They are deduced to be parental melts to the Ditrau Alkaline Massif.

Late Palaeoproterozoic post-collisional magmatism in the North China Craton: geochemistry, zircon U–Pb geochronology, and Hf isotope of the pyroxenite–gabbro–diorite suite from Xinghe, Inner Mongolia

The North China Craton (NCC) witnessed a prolonged subduction–accretion history from the early to late Palaeoproterozoic, culminating with final collision at ca. 1.85 Ga and assembling the continental blocks into the cratonic framework. Subsequently, widespread post-collisional magmatism occurred, particularly along the Trans-North China Orogen (TNCO) that sutures the Eastern and Western blocks of the NCC. Here we present petrological, geochemical, and zircon U–Pb geochronological and Lu–Hf data from a pyroxenite (websterite)–gabbro–diorite suite at Xinghe in Inner Mongolia along the northern segment of the TNCO. The internal structures and high Th/U values of the zircons from the gabbro–diorite suite suggest magmatic crystallization. LA-ICP-MS U–Pb age data on three gabbros and one diorite from the suite yield emplacement ages of 1786.1 ± 4.8, 1783 ± 15 ,1754 ± 16 and 1767 ± 13 Ma, respectively. The εHf(t) shows mostly positive values (up to 5.8), with the lowest value at –4.2, suggesting that the magma was derived from dominantly juvenile sources. The generally low SiO2 and high MgO values, and other trace element features of the Xinghe suite are consistent with fractionation from a mantle-derived magma with a broadly E-MORB affinity, with no significant crustal contamination. Recent studies clearly establish that the major magmatic pulse associated with rifting of the NCC within the Columbia supercontinent occurred in the late Mesoproterozoic at ca. 1.3–1.2 Ga associated with mantle plume activity. This, together with the lack of robust geochemical imprints of rift-related magmatism in the Xinghe suite, prompts us to suggest a tectonic model that envisages magma genesis associated with post-collisional extension during slab break-off, following the westward subduction of the Eastern Block and its collision with the Western Block. The resulting asthenospheric upwelling and heat input might have triggered the magma generation from a heterogeneous, subduction-modified sub-lithospheric mantle source for the Xinghe rocks, as well as for similar late Palaeoproterozoic suites in the TNCO.
