High fidelity modeling of thermal relaxation and dissociation of oxygen

A master equation study of vibrational relaxation and dissociation of oxygen is conducted using state-specific O2–O transition rates, generated by extensive trajectory simulations. Both O2–O and O2–O2 collisions are concurrently simulated in the evolving nonequilibrium gas system under constant heat bath conditions. The forced harmonic oscillator model is incorporated to simulate the state-to-state relaxation of oxygen in O2–O2 collisions. The system of master equations is solved to simulate heating and cooling flows. The present study demonstrates the importance of atom-diatom collisions due to the extremely efficient energy randomization in the intermediate O3 complex. It is shown that the presence of atomic oxygen has a significant impact on vibrational relaxation time at temperatures observed in hypersonic flow. The population of highly-excited O2 vibrational states is affected by the amount of atomic oxygen when modeling the relaxation under constant heat bath conditions. A model of coupled state-to-state vibrational relaxation and dissociation of oxygen is also discussed.

Vibrational relaxation study of C[dbnd]O stretching mode of liquid N,N-dimethylformamide: Comparative study with theoretical calculation

The study reports to the bandshape analysis of CO stretching band of liquid N,N-dimethylformamide using various polar and non-polar solvents. The changes in bandwidths and anisotropy shift have been explained for neat liquid as well as binary mixtures using different solvents. The vibrational relaxation rates were correlated with different solvent concentrations to understand interacting nature of molecules. Ab initio calculation is carried out to give a complete picture of the molecule and vibrational spectra. The calculated characteristics of DMF are in good agreement with experimental values, allowing them to be used in spectral and structural analysis.

Resonant energy transfer between highly vibrationally excited RbH(RbD) and H2(D2)

An experimental study of vibrational relaxation and V–V and V–R energy transfer in RbH-H2 collisions and their isotopic variants has been performed. In RbH (v″=17, 18, 21)+H2, single quantum relaxation accounts for only about 30% of the total relaxation out of v″ states, and multiquantum relaxation makes significant contribution. For RbH (v″=18), Δv=2 relaxation is about twice as large as Δv=1. The significant fraction (24%) of the initial population for RbH (v″=21) prepared by overtone pumping, relaxes to much lower vibrational levels (Δv=−8). The time scales is much shorter than the known collisional lifetimes of the intervening vibrational levels and thus a sequential single-quantum relaxation mechanism can be explicitly ruled out. V–V energy transfer is suitable explanation. Energy transfer between RbD (X1Σ+v″=21–30) and D2 has been also investigated. V–R and V–V resonance behavior has been also confirmed.

High temperature reaction kinetics of CN(v = 0) with C2H4 and C2H6 and vibrational relaxation of CN(v = 1) with Ar and He

The investigation of the chemical complexity of hot environments, ranging from combustion flames to circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars, relies on the determination of the reaction kinetics and product branching ratio. We have designed a chemical reactor for the exploration of high temperature chemistry. This apparatus is employed in the present study to measure the reaction kinetics of the CN radical with C2H4 and C2H6 over the 300-1200 K temperature range. In our setup and in some environments, the CN radical is partially produced in a vibrationally excited state, before relaxing by collision with the surrounding gas. We complement the experimental kinetic studies of hydrocarbons reactions with CN(v = 0) with a theoretical study of vibrational relaxation of CN(v = 1) by He and Ar atoms, the main collisional partners in our apparatus. Calculations are carried out to determine the collisional elastic and inelastic cross sections versus the kinetic energy as well as the corresponding vibrationally elastic and inelastic rate coefficients. The results are compared with empirical calculations and with a few experimental observations. The range of validity of the empirical model is discussed and potential applications sketched.

Study on vibrational relaxation dynamics of phenol–water complex by picosecond time-resolved IR-UV pump–probe spectroscopy in a supersonic molecular beam

A comparative study of vibrational energy relaxation (VER) between the monohydrated complexes of phenol-d0 and phenol-d1 is investigated in a supersonic molecular beam. The direct time-resolved measurement of energy redistribution from the phenolic OH/OD stretching mode of the phenol-d0-H2O/phenol-d1-D2O is performed by picosecond IR-UV pump–probe spectroscopy. Two complexes follow the same relaxation process that begins with the intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) and the intermolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR), which is followed by the vibrational predissociation (VP). The difference in the relaxation lifetimes between them is discussed by anharmonic force field and RRKM calculations. Anharmonic analysis implies that intra- (IVR) and intermolecular (IVR) relaxations occur in parallel in the complexes. The RRKM-predicted dissociation (VP) lifetimes show qualitative agreement with the observed results, suggesting that VP takes place after the statistical energy distribution in the complexes.

Theoretical Study of Internal Vibrational Relaxation and Energy Transport in Polyatomic Molecules

We attempted to theoretically characterize internal vibrational relaxation and energy relaxation pathways due to anharmonicity in polyatomic molecules. Energy transport dynamics have been modeled based on a generalization of Marcus electron transfer theory. Modifications have been made to our previously developed theory in order to improve the description of internal vibrational dynamics. We applied our method to several molecules studied experimentally by relaxation-assisted two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (RA 2DIR). The theoretical predictions were found to be consistent with the majority of the experimental data.

Solvent dependent Raman bandshape analysis on C[dbnd]O containing molecules: Vibrational relaxation study

Solvent dependent Raman band studies of some carbonyl containing molecules have been carried out in chlorobenzene (CLB) and chloroform (CLF) solvents. The variation of bandwidth with the solvent concentration was discussed using different mechanisms. The vibrational and reorientational correlation times were studied corresponding to solvent concentrations. The reorientational correlation time follows with the liquid viscosity in molecules under study. It reflects about the nature of solvent molecules hindering to the orientational motion of solute in liquid solution.

A femtosecond fluorescence study of vibrational relaxation and cooling dynamics of UV dyes

We present a femtosecond broad-band fluorescence up-conversion study of the vibrational relaxation dynamics of two UV chromophores, 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO) and para-terphenyl (pTP), pumped with a large excess of vibrational energy (>2000 cm(-1)). The band narrowing of the transient fluorescence spectrum reflects a biphasic cooling process in a few hundreds of fs and a few ps. In the sub-ps regime, our data suggest a structural rearrangement in the excited state, followed by thermalization of the excess energy. These dynamics affect the fluorescence spectra of PPO and pTP in different ways. In PPO, the damping of a low frequency vibrational wavepacket and a significant sub-ps narrowing of the band characterize the vibrational relaxation. In pTP, the latter is faster and appears as a red shift with distortion of the band in <200 fs.

Transient absorption studies of vibrational relaxation and photophysics of Prussian blue and ruthenium purple nanoparticles

Transient infrared and visible absorption studies have been used to characterize vibrational and electronic dynamics of Prussian blue (PB) and ruthenium purple (RP) nanoparticles produced and characterized in AOT reverse micelles. Studies include excitation and probing with both infrared (near 2000 cm(-1)) and visible (800 nm) pulses. From IR pump-IR probe measurements of the CN stretching bands, vibrational population lifetimes are determined to be 32 ± 4 ps for PB and 44 ± 14 ps for RP. These times are longer than those for ferrocyanide (4 ps) and ruthenocyanide (4 ps) in normal water and are closer to the times for these species in heavy water (25-30 ps) and for ferrocyanide in formamide (43 ps). The PB and RP lifetimes are also longer than those (<15 ps) previously measured for CN stretching bands following intervalence excitation and back-electron transfer (BET) for dinuclear mixed-valence compounds containing Fe, Ru, and Os in heavy water and formamide [A. V. Tivansky, C. F. Wang, and G. C. Walker, J. Phys. Chem. A 107, 9051 (2003)]. In 800 nm pump-IR probe experiments on RP and PB, transient IR spectra and decay curves are similar to those with IR excitation; a ground state bleach and a red shifted (by ~40 cm(-1)) excited state decay are observed. These results for the visible pumping are consistent with rapid (<1 ps) BET resulting in population in the ground electronic state with vibrational excitation in the CN mode. In addition, transient absorption studies were performed for PB and RP probing with visible light using both visible and IR excitation. The early time response for the 800 nm pump-800 nm probe of PB exhibits an instrument-limited, subpicosecond bleach followed by an absorption, which is consistent with the previously reported results [D. C. Arnett, P. Vohringer, and N. F. Scherer, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 117, 12262 (1995)]. The absorption exhibits a biexponential decay with decay times of 9 and 185 ps, which could have been attributed to the CN band excitation indicated from 800 pump-IR probe results. However, IR pump-800 nm probe studies reveal that excitation of the CN band directly results in a decreased visible absorption that decays in 18 ps rather than an induced absorption at 800 nm. Characteristics of the IR pump-800 nm probe, especially that it induces a bleach instead of an absorption, unambiguously indicate that the transient absorption from the 800 nm pump-800 nm probe is dominated by states other than the CN bands and is attributed to population in other, probably lower frequency, vibrational modes excited following visible excitation and rapid BET.

Vibrational relaxation study in 4-chloroacetophenone

Vibrational relaxation process has been emerged as a useful tool in probing the nature of solute solvent interactions in liquid phase. The Laser Raman techniques have been used to study the vibrational and rotational frequencies of molecules, which provide detailed information about the dynamic processes involved in liquids. Raman spectra of C=O stretching mode of 4-chloroacetophenone dissolved in acetonitrile and chlorobenzene have been recorded as a function of solvent concentration ranging from 10% to 90% concentration at room temperature. The 4-chloroacetophenone is a molecule having wide application in manufacture of drugs, perfumes and cosmetics. This study may provide useful information about the vibrational relaxation mechanisms in liquid solutions at molecular level. The Laser Raman components were determined and the spectra were analyzed at different solvent concentrations. The theoretical models have been tested and compare with the experimental results.

Study of vibrational relaxation and molecular reorientation in liquids: a Raman spectroscopic study

AbstractThe vibrational relaxation and molecular reorientational processes in liquids have been studied in some carbonyl‐containing molecules using the acetonitrile (ACN) solvent. The vibrational and reorientational processes have been studied in correspondence with correlation times. The screening effect due to dielectric has been studied and the Onsager reaction field model has been tested. Raman spectroscopic studies of vibrational relaxation and non‐coincidence effect in substituted benzaldehyde binary mixtures

AbstractThe molecular interaction in the binary mixture of 3‐phenoxybenzaldhyde (3Phbz) and 4‐ethoxybenzaldehyde (4Etob) was analysed in four different solvents. The concentration dependence of vibrational relaxation of the CO stretching band of 3Phbz in different solvents was investigated by varying the concentration of the solute molecule in the solvents by performing Raman spectroscopic measurements. The self‐associated nature and the formation of hydrogen‐bonded complexes in the solute molecule, 4Etob, were considered to analyse the wavenumber separation between the peaks of hydrogen‐bonded and free carbonyl groups. Density-functional theory study of vibrational relaxation of CO stretching excitation on Si(100)

A first-principles theory is presented for calculating the lifetime of adsorbate vibrations on semiconductor or insulator surfaces, where dissipation of the vibrational energy to substrate phonons is the dominant relaxation mechanism. As an example, we study the stretching vibration of CO/Si(100), where a lifetime of 2.3 ns has been measured recently [K. Lass, X. Han, and E. Hasselbrink, J. Chem. Phys. 123, 051102 (2005)]. Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations for the local modes of the adsorbate, including their anharmonic coupling, are combined with force field calculations for the substrate phonons. Using the DFT-Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof functional, we have determined the most stable adsorption site for CO on top of the lower Si atom of the Si surface dimer, the local normal modes of CO, and the multidimensional potential energy surface for the CO vibrations. The anharmonic stretching frequency of adsorbed CO obtained in DFT-PBE is 5% lower than the experimental value, while the B3LYP functional reproduces the CO stretching frequency with only 1.4% error. The coupling between the anharmonic vibrational modes and the phonon continuum is evaluated within first-order perturbation theory, and transition rates for the CO vibrational relaxation are calculated using Fermi's golden rule. The lifetime of 0.5 ns obtained with DFT-PBE is in qualitative agreement with experiment, while using vibrational frequencies from the B3LYP functional gives a much too long lifetime as compared to experiment. We find that the numerical value of the lifetime is very sensitive to the harmonic frequencies used as input to the calculation of the transition rate. An empirical adjustment of these frequencies yields excellent agreement between our theory and experiment. From these calculations we conclude that the most probable microscopic decay channel of the CO stretching mode is into four lateral shift/bending quanta and one phonon.

Semiclassical initial value series representation in the continuum limit: Application to vibrational relaxation

A recently formulated continuum limit semiclassical initial value series representation (SCIVR) of the quantum dynamics of dissipative systems is applied to the study of vibrational relaxation of model harmonic and anharmonic oscillator systems. As is well known, the classical dynamics of dissipative systems may be described in terms of a generalized Langevin equation. The continuum limit SCIVR uses the Langevin trajectories as input, albeit with a quantum noise rather than a classical noise. Combining this development with the forward-backward form of the prefactor-free propagator leads to a tractable scheme for computing quantum thermal correlation functions. Here we present the first implementation of this continuum limit SCIVR series method to study two model problems of vibrational relaxation. Simulations of the dissipative harmonic oscillator system over a wide range of parameters demonstrate that at most only the first two terms in the SCIVR series are needed for convergence of the correlation function. The methodology is then applied to the vibrational relaxation of a dissipative Morse oscillator. Here, too, the SCIVR series converges rapidly as the first two terms are sufficient to provide the quantum mechanical relaxation with an estimated accuracy on the order of a few percent. The results in this case are compared with computations obtained using the classical Wigner approximation for the relaxation dynamics.

Vibrational energy transfer in ultracold molecule-molecule collisions

We present a rigorous study of vibrational relaxation in $\text{para}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{H}}_{2}+\text{para}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{H}}_{2}$ collisions at cold and ultracold temperatures and identify an efficient mechanism of rovibrational energy transfer. If the colliding molecules are in different rotational and vibrational levels, the internal energy may be transferred between the molecules through an extremely state-selective process involving simultaneous conservation of internal energy and total rotational angular momentum. The same transition in collisions of distinguishable molecules corresponds to the rotational energy transfer from one vibrational state of the colliding molecules to another.

Vibrational relaxation study in carbonyl containing molecule: role of hydrodynamic and dispersion forces

AbstractThe isotropic Raman component of the C = O stretching mode of ethyl acetate (EA) was analyzed using various polar and nonpolar solvents. It was found that the bandshape approaches towards Lorentzian at high dilution using the curve‐fitting method. The isotropic Raman band was also analyzed by estimating the correlation coefficient with reference to the Lorentzian lineshape using a simple method of linear‐curve fitting. The effects of dispersion and hydrodynamic forces on bandwidth were studied in details. The vibrational relaxation rate was studied using certain parameters and it was found that the microscopic based parameter can explain the complexities occurring in solute–solvent interactions. Numerical Study of Vibrational Energy Relaxation of OH Bending in Liquid H2O

The relaxation of O-H bending of water molecule H2O in the liquid phase was studied with the molecular dynamics simulation approach. Both rigid and flexible solvents were used to identify the different channels for the vibrational energy relaxation. It was observed that the relaxation time for the O-H bend overtone is 174 fs in the rigid solvent while it is 115 fs in the flexible solvent. The main pathway of the O-H bend overtone is transition to the bend fundamental. The relaxation time of the O-H bend fundamental was calculated as 204 fs which is comparable to the experimental value 170 fs.

Free vibrational relaxation of H adsorbed on a Si(1 0 0) surface investigated with the multi-configurational time-dependent Hartree method

The results of a quantum-mechanical study of vibrational relaxation of hydrogen adsorbed on a Si(1 0 0) surface with the multi-configurational time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method are presented. A two-dimensional subsystem is coupled non-linearly to a bath of harmonic oscillators (phonons of the Si bulk), and the relaxation of subsystem vibrations proceeds primarily via a two-phonon process. Characteristic times of the system evolution agree well with our previous perturbation theory study. The vibrational population decay is non-exponential, exhibiting pronounced recurrences due to finite bath size. The dependence of the lifetimes of the vibrational levels on the bath size and on the coupling details is investigated.

Theoretical study of vibrational relaxation and internal conversion dynamics of chlorophyll-a in ethyl acetate solvent in femtosecond laser fields

The density matrix and the transient linear susceptibility theories are used to calculate the fluorescence depletion spectrum and the internal conversion (IC) time of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) in ethyl acetate solvent. The IC time and the vibrational relaxation time of Chl-a in the ethyl acetate solvent are 133 fs and 1.5 ps at room temperature, respectively. The calculated fluorescence depletion spectrum of Chl-a in the ethyl acetate solvent agrees well with the experimental result of Shi et al. [Shi et al.,Chem. Phys. Lett. 410 (2005) 260]. The effects of solvation and the IC time on the fluorescence depletion spectrum are also discussed.
