Why Study the Seasons? Reflections on the Question of Urban Temporalities

This article will conclude the collection of essays for this special issue on urban seasonality, but rather than offering a summary, it will point toward future directions in the study of urban seasonality. Why should we more closely consider the impact of seasonal variation in the study of urban history? How do the seasons help us understand the concept of temporality in the analysis of urban environments, sociocultural landscapes, as well as institutional and infrastructural layouts? This contribution will also suggest how the seasons might help us bridge local specificities, transnational, global, and planetary concerns.

Re-territorializing Mengla: From “backwater” to “bridgehead” of China's socio-economic development

This profile of Mengla contributes to our understanding of the city itself and the drastic transformations underway in China's vast inner Asian borderlands. Applying the conceptual lens of territorialization, it offers a critical review of the physical and discursive transition of Mengla from “backwater” to “bridgehead” within the specific context of China's anti-poverty campaign. It first contextualizes the city's recent transformation within three waves of socialist modernity imposed on Xishuangbanna since 1949. Second, it outlines the evolution of poverty reduction in China, focusing particularly on how the Development-oriented Poverty Reduction program has transformed Mengla and the broader Dianxi Area. Third, the development of the Mengla Experimental Zone illustrates how a hybridized BRI-poverty reduction program has further accelerated Mengla's urbanization. Fourth, a detailed case study of Nanla New District reveals a novel form of frontier urbanism characterized by a tourism-related real estate development model. This profile concludes with three lessons, namely the importance of integrating environmental and social histories into urban history studies, interpreting the impacts and effects of the BRI in relation to other development initiatives, and investigating the discursive spaces of development projects to reveal the socio-ecological values that undergird the physical transformations observed on the ground.

A “Far North Dixie Land”: Black Settlement, Discrimination, and Community in Urban Alaska

Abstract Though it never ranked among the top destinations of the Great Migration, Alaska nevertheless enticed thousands of African Americans during the postwar decades. On the one hand, Black Alaskans experienced the lamentable patterns that defined American race relations in the twentieth century: housing and job discrimination alongside marginalization and racial violence. On the other hand, Black men and women also found in Alaska a place to make their own. This article presents a case study of urban history in the American West and demonstrates that despite its distance from other metropolitan centers, Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage, was not excluded from major postwar trends. Rather, many of the defining through-lines of midcentury U.S. history—mass migration, racial discrimination, community formation, urban planning, and civic activism, to name a few—were present and comprise a dynamic story that until now has never been told.

Historical Atlas of Polish Towns - between source edition and the cartographic presentation of research on the history of towns

The article presents the organizational frameworks and methodological problems connected with undertaking the editorial project titled „Historical Atlas of Polish Towns”, which is a part of the international initiative „European Historical Town Atlas” under the auspices of International Commission for the History of Towns. The author underlines a diversified source foundations for the base maps' edition, which, in case of „Historical Atlas of Polish Towns”, was a measurement map; for the towns located in the area of the former Austrian Partition the maps elaborated within the cadastre in 1819-1859 served as a basis of the edition. However, in the former Prussian Partition (Silesia and Pomerania), the cadastre maps elaborated on the grounds of the bill from 1961 proved to be more problematic – the defects of particular map sheets and their incomplete condition forced the editors to use the maps elaborated in different times and according to different measurements. In the article, a great scientific value of the maps' reproductions is presented, an attempt to characterize the maps on the spatial development of the cities is undertaken, and urban history studies on particular topics are mentioned. In the conclusions, the determinants and scientific objectives resulting in the changes in the editorial principles and the content of the published European Atlases are addressed. The primary trends identified are the postulate to include in the atlases the cartographic sources and historical and iconographic materials from the 19th and 20th c., as well as the use of Geographic Information Systems in publishing the editorial achievement in the form of geoportals or other electronic resources.

What happened to modern Irish urban history?

ABSTRACT:A remarkable cluster of Irish town histories appeared in the early nineteenth century, coming after several generations of unprecedented urban growth. But that growth stalled and most Irish towns entered a long period of stagnation. Meanwhile, academic interest in the urban past became dormant. Urbanization in Ireland resumed in the twentieth century, but the study of urban history was late to develop and slow to move beyond the documentation of built heritage. However, public interest in medieval origins, official interest in urban heritage and the vision of a handful of medieval historians and historical geographers have helped transform the prospects for Irish urban history.

Introduction to Historical GIS and the Study of Urban History

Over the past decade or so geographic information systems (GIS) methodology has become an accepted tool in historical research (Gregory and Ell 2007; Knowles 2008). Although often regarded as a mapping tool, GIS is perhaps better thought of as a type of database. What makes a GIS database unique is that a location is stored for each item of data, with this location taking any of a variety of forms: a point, a line, a polygon representing an area or zone, or, in the case of a raster system, a pixel. GIS can then present instantly on the screen a map showing the distribution of any variable or combination of variables in any of the chosen locational formats. This electronic display of information becomes an analytic tool, allowing the refinement of research questions, with answers displayed instantly: GIS creates a display of information once visible only in paper form, drawn slowly and expensively first by cartographers and then by vector plotters. GIS and its associated tools transform mapping into a dynamic exploratory process.

Research in urban history: recent theses on international and comparative urban history

The editorial board of urban history has decided to change the format of the ‘review of theses’ section. While wishing to retain a survey of the most recent doctoral studies in urban history, we have decided to focus each review on a specific theme or topic, written by a current student or postdoctoral researcher. The first of these reviews, by Nancy Haekyung Kwak, surveys theses in international and/or comparative urban history.
