Students’ Perception of the Enforcement Model Approach towards Radicalism Movement in Malaysia Higher Learning Institutions (HLI’s)

Radicalism among undergraduates in a higher learning institution (is an HLI’s) thing that is already synonymous in most countries, especially in developing nations. The radicalism brought about by the student movement is not triggered, but it is often influenced by the issue of statehood, which is a factor in social change and the formation of community values. However, the involvement of students in higher learning institutions (HLI’s) in Malaysia is now not as intense and aggressive as in the foreign context. Based on scientific studies, student participation in Malaysia lack awareness and concern about the current political issues and problems around them. The enforcement of the University College University Act (AUKU) 1971 in Malaysia, which prohibits students from engaging in politics for five decades, has caused some passivity and paralysis in the students’ interest in political activities. Therefore, this study’s main objective is to develop a resilience model in preventing radicalism in a more student-friendly scenario that does not constrain students’ rights in Malaysia, like the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU), by benchmarking the good practices in Indonesia’s Higher Learning Institution (HLI’s) using the Altbach’s theoretical framework. Thus, questionnaires were conducted among students in three HLI’s – UTM, UKM and UM to understand students’ perception of AUKU from the technical and social sciences backgrounds. The study found that students’ perception of the AUKU enforcement model was poorly satisfactory and required a review, as universities function not as controlled factories but as generators of knowledge for producing great and intellectual national leaders regardless of their calibre and performance.

The Need of Online Counselling to Enhance Mental Health among Students in Higher Learning Institutions in Tanzania

This study aimed to explore the need of online counselling to enhance mental health among students in higher learning institutions. The study employed a qualitative research approach in which 40 participants were involved. These were purposefully selected from two higher learning institutions in Tanzania - 30 were students and 10 were counsellors. In-depth interviews and Focus Group Discussion were used to collect data from the respondents. The findings revealed that through online counselling, it is easy to access psychosocial therapy, maintain privacy, conduct time/cost-friendly therapy, access services, allow freedom of expression as well as allow easy feedback and follow-up. Also, network connectivity problems, bundle challenges, fear of online hacking and failure to understand clients’ feelings were revealed to be challenges on the use of online counselling. However, awareness on the importance of online counselling, capacity building on the forms of online counselling, availability of free Wi-Fi in university campuses and halls of residence, reduced cost of bundles and provision of university offers as well as formation of online counselling support groups were earmarked as strategies for enhancing online counselling among undergraduate students as a way of enhancing their mental health.

Management of Gamified Lesson: Understanding Aesthetics and Acceptance among Learners

Joyful learning evokes happy feelings and subsequently induces positive academic achievement. With the rise of mental health issues due to intense study among students, gamification has recently grown in popularity among academic institutions to make learners happier, more engaged and ultimately improve learning outcomes. However, the management of gamified lessons has been a problem for years for all education levels on a varying basis. Nowadays, it is increasingly recognized that not all learners are acceptive of gamified lessons for learning. Drawing on a survey of 283 students of higher learning institutions, this study found that aesthetics, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment have a favorable impact on the intention to accept gamification in learning among learners. This study contributes to under-investigated scholarly works of suitable conditions under which gamified lesson best takes place with regard to aesthetics and learners’ acceptance that would be beneficial for the effective management of gamification.

THE IMPACT OF SERVICE QUALITY ON THE EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING OF STUDENTS: A STUDY AMONGST COLLEGE STUDENTS IN KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA

The emotional well-being and mental health of students in the higher education sector have been greatly researched over the past few years since students are increasingly subjected to various stressors in their daily lives. One element of such stressors would be the impact of service quality within the educational institution itself. However, previous studies had mainly focused on the influence of service quality regarding student satisfaction or motivation and completely overlooked their emotional well-being. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of service quality on the emotional well-being of students in higher learning institutions by employing the HESQUAL model to discern on whether emotional well-being is affected by service quality and if so, the level of its impact. Primary data have been utilised and collected through a questionnaire created according to the model discussed, and were analysed with a sample size of 105 students. The findings of this study showed that Service Quality Factors such as Physical Environment Quality, Administrative Quality and Quality of Support Facilities has an effect on the emotional wellbeing of students, supporting the objective of this study. The data illustrates how each change in the level of service quality influences a change in emotional well-being. However, it is clear that further investigations are required in the future since there are variables that could be improved upon.

THE STUDENTS COGNITIVE DISCREPANCIES IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCES UTILIZATION: A CASE OF HIGHER LEARNING INSTITUTIONS

The humanistic intellectual algorithmic nodes deployment on Artificial Intelligences (AIs) brought significances in undertaking socio-economics activities. Students in higher learning institutions utilized the AIs for education purposes leading to damages in the cognitive process. The phenomenography action research was purposively conducted to assess 113 higher learning institution students’ cognitive discrepancies due to AI utilization. The objectives undertaken were to: assess the attributes leading students’ differences in AI utilization and determine the students cognitive discrepancies in performance resulted by utilization of AI in the learning process. Data were collected through students’ test-re-tested class activity worksheets observations and semi-structured interview. The major findings showed that students were highly rated in utilization of AI to save time, had cognitively worries and less authentic assurance. Also, the findings on students cognitive discrepancies utilization was proved to be ascertained on indicators for cognitive processes, individual differences, feedback and interaction, motivation and engagement, creativity and imagination. The recommendation were made to students and instructors to appropriate utilize and blend AI utilization in teaching and learning process for cognitive wealth so as to overwhelm shortfalls resulted by over utilization of AIs.

Drivers of gender-based violence amongst the students in higher learning institutions: A case of Kwame Nkrumah university

This study sought to investigate the Drivers of Gender Based Violence amongst students in higher learning institutions in Zambia. The study used a descriptive case study design and data was collected using questionnaires and interviews. Simple random sampling procedure was used to target 62 participants and purposive sampling was used to collect data from 2 university staff and 1 District GBV officer. Data was collected and analyzed using themes that emerged from the literature review and objectives of the study. The main findings of the study were that the prevalent levels of Gender Based Violence amongst students in higher learning institutions were ignorance about Gender Based Violence as most students have little or no understanding on what constitutes GBV and the few who understood could not take action because of not knowing where to go. Furthermore, the findings revealed that Alcohol and Drug abuse amongst students was largely responsible for GBV, peer pressure and the environment created by the institutions. High learning institutions should take a deliberate policy to foster equality and protect every student in the institution. Further, the institutions should engage the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) for sensitization programs and also promote student activism. There is need for university management to review the policies to protect every student from abuse by both students and lectures

The Driving Forces for the Involvement of Higher Learning Institution’s Students in Cybercrime Acts. A Case of Selected Higher Learning Institutions in Tanzania

This study investigates the extent and driving forces of cybercrime acts among students in higher learning institutions. The research digs into common cybercrime involvement and explores potential motives driving students' engagement in such illicit activities. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, involving online surveys and interviews with 308 samples size from a population of 1500 participants from selected higher learning institutions in Tanzania. Institutions involved in this study included Collage of Business Education (CBE), Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT), Institute of Finance Management (IFM) and Tanzania Institute of Accountancy (TIA). The findings revealed that digital piracy, hacking, computer viruses, spam mailing, computer-related forgery, and cyberbullying were prevalent forms of cybercrime among the participants. Significant associations were identified between cybercrime involvement and factors such as social-economic status, technological changes, peer influence, lack of awareness of cybercrime, individual traits, and internet usage contributing to students' involvement in cybercrime. In light of these findings, the study recommends implementing comprehensive educational programs, strengthening institutional cybersecurity, promoting positive peer influence, enhancing collaboration with law enforcement, and integrating ethical training into the curriculum. These efforts will foster a safe and responsible digital environment within higher learning institutions, protecting students from cybercrime risks and promoting ethical digital citizenship.

Assessment of WhatsApp as a Collaborative Learning Tool in the post COVID-19 Era in Higher Learning Institutions: A Case of Tanzania

Information Technology has changed our societies in a variety of ways, before COVID-19 and after COVID-19. A mobile phone being one of the devices under technological generation is needed in teaching and learning. In higher learning institutions, a great number of students make mobile phones part of useful tools for learning. This study aimed to assess WhatsApp as a collaborative learning tool in Higher Learning Institutions a case in Tanzania. The study used a multi-case method where students from three different Higher Learning Institutions were used as units of inquiry. These students came from different levels and programmes, the institutions were from one private institution and two public institutions. The tool used to collect data was an online form created by google. Data collected was then analysed and processed through the google form and the responses were shown with charts and graphs from google. The study included students from non-degree (certificate and diploma) and undergraduate students from bachelor’s degree. The results indicated that WhatsApp is one of the most favored mobile based applications, especially in HLIs; students use the WhatsApp application in exchanging learning materials with their fellow students and their instructors. Not only that, but the application is also used for opening new collaboration and links with other students from different colleges and universities. Nevertheless, the results showed that some students in higher learning institutions in Tanzania use WhatsApp as a platform to learn new business ideas hence some open businesses while still students at College or University through this platform. The current study recommends that Higher learning institution should have conducive environment for learners to get free internet services throughout in the University compound at the same time having a policy that show rules and regulations to be followed on ways to use the WhatsApp tool

Prevalence and Burden of Gastrointestinal Parasites among University Students at Dar es Salaam University College of Education, Tanzania

Gastrointestinal parasites cause major health problems in many tropical and sub-tropical countries including Tanzania. However, information on the status of these infections is often scanty, especially among young adults including students in higher learning institutions. During December 2020 to June 2021, a total of 272 faecal samples from university students at Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE) were examined for parasites using the Kato Katz technique and analysed for infection levels based on standard guidelines. Detected parasites were identified as Schistosoma mansoni (8.1%), hookworms (1.5%), Trichuris trichiura (0.4%) and Hymenolepis diminuta (0.4%), with an overall prevalence of 10.4%. S. mansoni had the highest mean intensity of 792 eggs per gram (epg) of faeces, while H. diminuta was the least intense parasite (120 epg). While infection levels of most parasites were generally low, S. mansoni intensity was categorized as heavy based on standard criteria. The findings indicated the public importance of parasitic infections among young adults who are often excluded from most intervention programmes. Thus, further studies to elucidate the magnitude of the infections among young adults in higher learning institutions in Tanzania is warranted alongside regular prescriptions of anthelminthics and sanitation and hygiene education to reduce parasite transmissions.

Assessing motivators for utilizing family planning services among youth students in higher learning institutions in Dodoma, Tanzania: Protocol for analytical cross sectional study.

Contraceptive services utilization is an important intervention in averting the impact of unwanted and unplanned pregnancy among youth which is an obstacle to the higher learning institutions youth students in attaining their educational goals. Therefore, the current protocol aims to assess the motivators for family planning service utilization among youth student in higher learning institutions in Dodoma Tanzania. This study will be a cross-sectional study with quantitative approach. A multistage sampling technique will be employed in studying 421 youth students aged between 18 to 24 years using structured self-administered questionnaire adopted from the previous studies. The study outcome will be family planning service utilization and independent variables will be family planning service utilization environment, knowledge factors, and perception factors. Other factors such as socio-demographic characteristics will be assessed if they are confounding factors. A factor will be considered as a confounder if it associates with both the dependent and the independent variables. Multivariable Binary logistic regression will be employed in determining the motivators for family planning utilization. The results will be presented using percentages, frequencies, and Odds Ratios and the association will be considered statistically significant at p-value <0.05.

Descriptive Analysis of Psychological Well-being among Students in Higher Learning Institutions in Malaysia: Which Gender Contributes More?

The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on our daily lives. Officials from the Department of Public Health are urging people to limit their social gatherings, limiting the amount of time and people they can interact with in person. Due to the closure of educational institutions, students have to changed their learning method from face-to-face to online learning. Stress, anxiety, and depression have been identified as the most common mental health issues among university students. Many people, notably students, have suffered psychological consequences as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. University students experience stress, worry, and despair even when there is no epidemic because of the constant demands of study. Research objectives of this study is to determine factor mostly influenced psychological well-being during online learning and to identify the significant relationship between digital competence, fear of infection COVID-19, social interaction, student attitude and psychological well-being.

The Exposure of Electrical Engineering Field as a STEM Branch towards Technical School’s Students in Malaysia

The decreasing interest in Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) amongst school students has become an issue that requires stern actions to be enforce. The decreasing interest in STEM will directly impacted the decreasing enrollment of students in Higher Learning Institution (HLI) engineering courses. Related to that, the school of electrical engineering Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Johor branch Pasir Gudang campus is not exempted with the mentioned problem. This decreasing interest in STEM issue may come from the lack of exposure related to the attributes of the STEM field amongst secondary school students. It is crucial to educate and expose these students towards the importance of STEM where they are the potential students for the HLI. Thus, the objective of this paper is to demonstrate the action that have been taken by conducting a webinar in order to expose secondary school students the attributes of electrical engineering as one of the important field in the branch of STEM. A webinar will be conducted that will explain the career, the experience of studying abroad, and the happiness that is related with electrical engineering in STEM. In addition a survey form will be distributed and an online quiz will be conducted at the end of the webinar. From the survey, important results were observed where 85% percent of students is interested to pursue their studies in the electrical field after listening to the webinar related to the career after finishing secondary school. In addition, 97.5% students are interested to further their studies in the electrical engineering field after listening to the webinar the experience of studying abroad after finishing secondary school.

USEFULNESS OF FINTAN INNOVATIVE PEDAGOGY MODEL IN FOSTERING ENTREPRENEURSHIP SKILLS AMONG STUDENTS IN THREE HIGHER LEARNING INSTITUTIONS IN TANZANIA

The study focused on the usefulness of FinTan innovative pedagogy model in enhancing entrepreneurship skills among students in higher learning institutions in Tanzania. Guided by the Teaching Framework for Entrepreneurship Theory by Fayolle and Grailly (2006), The target population was three higher learning institutions, 120 lecturers, 700 students, and 9 team leaders who were beneficiaries of the FinTan innovative pedagogy model. A stratified random and purposive sampling technique were used to draw the sample for the study which consisted of 327 respondents. Questionnaires and interview guide instruments were used to collect data that was validated by researchers and evaluation expertise and Cronbach's Alpha was used to ensure reliability of questionnaires. Trustworthiness and triangulation were used for reliability of interview guide instruments. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented using tables, while qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings of the study revealed that FinTan innovative pedagogy model was effective in helping students to build networking with experienced individuals in society and relate the topic materials to the needs of society which in turn develop entrepreneurship skills. The study concluded that FinTan innovative pedagogy model is useful in enhancing entrepreneurial skills in students. The study recommended that the three institutions should share the knowledge with other higher learning institutions for students to develop entrepreneurship skills, which are identified as essential skills in minimizing the unemployment rate as well as caring for the environment in the process of self-employment. Gender differences and prevalence of sleeping disorder among arts students in higher learning institutions.

Every human being need a sufficient amount of high-quality sleep. However, according to studies, both men and women are becoming more afflicted by sleep disorders, which are particularly prevalent among university students. Nowadays, sleep problems are a frequent occurrence in people's daily lives. Due to the fact that female students have more difficulty falling asleep and continuously wake up earlier than male students, they are more impacted than their male counterparts. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to determine the prevalence of sleeping disorders between males and females among Music and Performing Art students in the institutes of higher learning. The survey was conducted online in June 2020. One hundred students from the faculty participated in this cross-sectional study. Simple random sampling used to select the samples. Students who took part in this survey were predominately female, 52% and male, 48%. The study found that here is a statistically significant difference between male and female Music and Performing Art students in the institutes of higher learning when it comes to sleeping disorder. The findings of the study revealed that there is a statistically significant difference in sleeping disorders between males and females’ students enrolled in a higher education institution. Hence, male and female morphologic differences in the context of sleeping difficulties may be revealed as a result of our study, which may provide information and evidence of such differences.

An animal welfare syllabus for wildlife tourism

An important sector of animal-based tourism is wildlife tourism, which includes a diverse base of attractions in captive, semi-captive and wild settings. We argue that actors (tourists, tourism operators, and academics) must have the prerequisite knowledge of animal welfare to assess animals’ conditions in tourism settings. To this end, this paper has two aims. The first is to develop an animal welfare syllabus that should be used to teach students in higher learning institutions (who may ultimately work at animal attractions upon their graduation) as well as operators. The second aim is to mesh the papers in this special edition as case studies within the syllabus in making a case for an enhanced animal welfare educational tool for wildlife tourism. While the animal welfare syllabus is constructed for all animals used in tourism, we apply it specifically to the wildlife tourism sector.

Technology Adoption for STEM Education in Higher Education: Students’ Experience from Selected Sub-Saharan African Countries

Challenges of a lack of formal technology-embeded teacher training, collaborative learning models, adequate technology know-how, and internet access are barriers to adopting technological-enabled teaching and learning STEM subjects in the African context. This study examined technology adoption for STEM in higher education while evaluating students’ experiences with evidence and implications for less developed countries. The survey research design was adopted for the study. The study population was students in higher learning institutions in selected countries in the sub-Saharan African region using a multi-stage sampling procedure consisting of convenience and purposive sampling techniques. A self-developed questionnaire titled Technology Adoption for Teaching and Learning Questionnaire “TATLQ” premised on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model was used for data collection. The instrument had an overall reliability coefficient of 0.96. The collated data were analysed using descriptive of the median and a network chart to answer the research questions. In contrast, the inferential statistics of t-test and Analysis of Variance statistics were used to test the hypothesis generated for the study and implemented in the psych package of R programming language version 4.0.2 software. Findings revealed that students had a positive experience with online teaching and learning and concluded that technology adoption for STEM education online teaching and learning is feasible in sub-Sahara Africa, with the need for improvements in internet access and technical support on the basis for which recommendations were made.

Assessing the challenges of e-learning in Malaysia during the pandemic of Covid-19 using the geo-spatial approach

The outbreak of the pandemic Covid-19 has transformed the education system in most countries worldwide. Following the lockdown measures in Malaysia, the Malaysian education system has fully transformed from conventional learning to online learning or known as e-learning as an alternative to minimize social contacts and physical communication to curb the transmission of Covid-19. In this regard, this study aims to identify the challenges faced by students in higher learning institutions throughout Malaysia during the implementation of the e-learning program. This study is based on a large sampling consisting of 2394 students from both public and private universities. The result from this study is analyzed through inferential methods such as the Spatial Analysis, the Principal Component Analysis, and the Mann–Whitney U test and through descriptive methods using the frequency analysis and the percentage analysis. Findings from this study suggest that location significantly influenced the challenges faced by students throughout the implementation of e-learning in higher learning institutions. For example, students in rural areas which can be identified as “vulnerable groups” are more likely to face both technical and connection with the internet access, tend to have a declining focus on learning and are prone to physical health problems, facing social isolation and low digital literacy compared to students in urban areas. Based on geographical analysis, students in Sabah, Perlis, and Melaka are most at risk of facing e-learning challenges. An anomaly case of students in Kuala Lumpur, however, posed another different result compared to other cities as they confront similar challenges with students in rural areas. This study provides the nuances of location and its implications for vulnerable groups that may put them at disadvantage in the e-learning program. Findings from this study will help to inform the relevant authorities and policymakers in improving the implementation of e-learning in Malaysia, especially towards the vulnerable groups so that it can be delivered more systematically and efficiently.

COVID-19 and The Impact of Online Learning on the Higher Institution Students’ Health

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on higher education institutions. Online teaching and learning have become a new norm, which may lead to lifestyle changes and impacting the university students' health. This study is conducted to investigate the impact of online learning on higher learning institution students’ health. A total of 384 students were recruited from a local university. All respondents were requested to complete an online survey for three months. The results indicated that majority of the respondents feel less satisfied with online learning. They reported to experienced several health issues as a result from online learning. Besides, online learning satisfaction level and health issue were found to be moderately positively correlated. This study can be a good rationale for the relevant parties to work cooperatively in improving the online learning satisfaction level as well as the students’ health condition.
