The Impact of a Brief Interprofessional Intervention on Attitudes toward Wellness Promotion among College Students in Helping Professions

Research demonstrates that interprofessional education (IPE) is effective in changing attitudes and behaviors among college students and health professionals. This study utilized a longitudinal, mixed-methods design to assess impacts of a brief IPE intervention focusing on multidimensional wellness promotion. The intervention incorporated principles of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), and integrated a multidimensional conceptualization of wellness with Solution-Focused Coaching (SFC), an evidence-based approach to behavior change. One hundred and seventy-six (N = 176) students from health science programs (e.g. social work, nursing) at a large Western university were recruited for the study. Quantitative results demonstrated significant (p <.01) differences between pre, postintervention, and six-week follow-up, as well as between intervention and control groups (p <.01). To augment quantitative data, brief, semi-structured interviews were completed with thirteen (n = 13) participants. Results of an Applied Thematic Analysis (ATA) included five emergent themes: increased multidimensional wellness understanding, holistic conceptualization of patients, more training needed related to wellness, encouraging small behavior changes, and the importance of self-care. Findings demonstrate the effectiveness of a brief, solution-focused wellness promotion intervention in changing attitudes, understanding, and intention related to utilizing a multidimensional model of wellness with college students in helping professions.

Proactive Coping Behavior in Sample of University Students in Helping Professions

The purpose of the present study is twofold. First is to carry out item and scale analysis of the Czech version of the Proactive Coping Inventory (PCI) on a selected sample of university students in helping professions (n = 176). Second is to identify the use of proactive coping strategies by gender, age, specialization and year of study. The PCI scales reached satisfactory item-total correlations, besides the items presented (8, 39 and 48). Internal consistency of the PCI scales ranged from .71 to .8, except low α for Strategic Planning. Students reached the highest use of emotional and instrumental support seeking with no overall socio-demographic differences. Further, interrelationships among the PCI scales and correlations within a subjective well-being, depression and social support are presented.

A Comparison of Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men Among Students of Helping Professions in Crete, Greece: The Cases of Social Work, Psychology, Medicine, and Nursing

This study investigated the attitudes toward lesbians and gay men among social work, psychology, medical, and nursing students in Crete, Greece, using Herek’s ATLG scale. No respondents held completely heterosexist attitudes; only 1.6% held completely non-heterosexist attitudes. The 44.96 total ATLG score indicates a slightly positive attitude toward lesbians and gay men. Psychology students scored higher than all others on positive attitudes, followed by social work students, medical students, and nursing students. Gender, having lesbian or gay acquaintances or friends, and religiosity were significant factors influencing students’ attitudes, while no impact on attitudes due to the effects of higher education could be discerned. Implications for curriculum design and teaching methods are discussed.

Výskyt D-typu osobnosti u študentov pomáhajúcich povolaní

Specifický charakter zamerania pomahajucich povolani kladie vysoke naroky nielen na ich odbornosť, ale tiež na ich osobnosť. Koncept D-typu osobnosti, zahŕňajuci vysoku negativnu afektivitu a zaroveň vysoku socialnu inhibiciu, zohrava významnu ulohu ako rizikový faktor v etiologii a prognoze niektorých ochoreni, a najma ischemickej choroby srdca.Cieľom nasho prieskumu bolo zmapovať výskyt D-typu osobnosti vo vybranej vzorke studentov pomahajucich povolani. Takisto sme sa sustredili na porovnanie výskytu tejto crty u roznych studijných odborov. Vo vzorke 221 studentov s priemerným vekom 20,39 bol na posudenie negativnej afektivity, socialnej inhibicie a D-typu osobnosti použitý dotaznik DS 14 od J. Denolleta (2005).V subskale Negativna afektivita, ktora charakterizuje tendenciu preživať negativne emocie v case a situaciach, dosiahli respondenti priemerne skore 9,8, zatiaľ co v subskale Socialnej inhibicie týkajucej sa tendencie potlacať vyjadrovanie emocii a spravania v socialnych interakciach bol priemer 10,6. Ako distressed alebo D-typ osobnosti bolo oznacených celkovo 54 studentov, co predstavuje takmer jednu stvrtinu (24,43 %) z celkoveho poctu respondentov (n = 221). Pri porovnavani jednotlivých skupin (resp. odborov) sme nezaznamenali výraznejsie rozdiely medzi skupinami studentov Osetrovateľstva, Socialnej prace a Psychologie. V subskale Negativnej afektivity bolo v skupine Osetrovateľstva dosiahnute priemerne skore 11,54 a v subskale Socialnej inhibicie 9,98 bodu. Obe hodnoty su teda veľmi blizko hranicnej hodnoty 10 bodov (SI), resp. ho prekracuju (NA). Tieto výsledky sa odrazili aj vo vyssom pocte studentov identifikovaných ako D-typ osobnosti (17, t.j. 28,33 %). Respondenti v skupine Socialnej prace dosiahli priemerne skore v subskale Negativnej afektivity 9,14 a v subskale Socialnej inhibicie 11,7, pricom 16 studentov sme oznacili ako D-typ osobnosti (29,09 %). Podobne výsledky boli dosiahnute aj v skupine studentov Psychologie, kde priemer pre Negativnu afektivitu a Socialnu inhibiciu bol 9,7, respektive 11,7 a ako D-typ sme oznacili 13 respondentov (26 %). Najlepsi výsledok podľa nasho hodnotenia dosiahli studenti Verejneho zdravotnictva, ktorých priemerne hodnoty v oboch subskalach nedosiahli hranicnu hodnotu 10 bodov (NA = 8,86; SI = 9,25), co sa ukazalo aj v najnižsom pocte studentov identifikovaných ako D-typ osobnosti. V tejto skupine ich bolo 8 (14,29 %).Pri nasom prieskume sme zistili relativne vysoký výskyt rizikových osobnostných faktorov obsiahnutých v koncepte D-typu osobnosti. Fakt, že islo o populaciu studentov, ktora je bežne považovana za zdravu, jasne dokazuje potrebu prevencie zameranej na znižovanie výskytu a možných nasledkov týchto rizikových faktorov v sirsej populacii.
