Motivational Factors Contributing to Students’ Participation in The English Learning Programs: A Study at MTs. Putri Nurul Haramain Islamic Boarding School Narmada

This research aims to find out motivational factors contributing the students’ participation in the English learning programs at MTs Putri Nurul Haramain Islamic Boarding School Narmada. This is a case study research using descriptive qualitative design. The participants of this research were 10 students at Cambridge class of MTs Putri Nurul Haramain Narmada. The instruments were observation, and interview. The data analysis was carried out using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The results show that there are five factors motivated the students in learning English at Learning English Programs which are teachers, activities and material, relevance, feedback, and classroom environment. In addition, the contribution of programs to the students’ motivation are have different perception on the students, Madani Super Camp is has a good contribution on the students’ perception, English Day is has good contribution on the students’ motivation and learning English in the classroom is not good has contribution on the students’ motivation in learning English at English Learning Programs.

Motivasi Mahasiswa Keperawatan Tingkat Akhir Dalam Belajar Bahasa Inggris

This study aims to analyze the motivation to learn English among nursing students, especially in facing global competition. This study uses a quantitative-descriptive approach with 95 students selected purposively. Motivation to learn English is measured through two main aspects, namely integrative motivation and instrumental motivation. The results of the study indicate that instrumental motivation such as the desire to support a career and understanding popular culture content, are the main drivers for students in learning English. In addition, integrative motivation such as the desire to understand the culture of English-speaking countries and interact with native speakers, also has a significant role. Educational institutions are expected to develop English learning programs that are more applicable, oriented to the world of work, and based on the global needs of students. Further research is recommended to conduct an in-depth analysis of the factors that influence motivation, as well as a longitudinal approach to track changes in motivation along with the education process.

The power of translanguaging by Papuan non-EFL students during EFL virtual class

The study focuses on addressing a knowledge gap in learning English for non-EFL students in higher education in Papua. Non-EFL students in Papua sometimes find English unattractive, if not frightening. Translanguaging helps non-EFL students to acquire and practice English skills in virtual classrooms. The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of non-EFL students' virtual EFL learning through translanguaging. A qualitative study was conducted through interviews and observations with EFL teachers and non-EFL students attending English classes. There are several non-English departments in one of the higher education institutions in Papua, which are sources of information in this study. The data are then analyzed qualitatively using a discourse analysis framework. The results of the study show that the power of translanguaging for non-EFL students is an option that is always used during virtual English learning. The process of virtual English learning uses different digital learning platforms such as Zoom meetings, WhatsApp groups and Google classroom. The use of this platform has its own privileges as long as it is used in virtual English learning with translanguaging. The process of learning English using different platforms can be described by two activities, such as teacher activities using translanguaging and student activities. Virtual English learning using translanguaging is also illustrated by the use of various language resources owned by students. This is an added value of virtual EFL learning using translanguaging. Therefore, it is highly recommended that EFL teachers use translanguaging during the virtual EFL teaching process to make it easier for non-EFL students to understand EFL subjects.

Improving Students’ English Speaking Skill Through Guided Conversation At SMK Industri Nasional 1 Setu Bekasi

This study aims to determine how far students' ability to speak English has improved, as well as to experiment with guided conversation techniques in English learning. This study applies the classroom action research method. The subjects of the study are 26 students from class X (TKJ) at SMK Industri Nasional 1 Setu Bekasi for the 2023 school year. The results of this study show that using guided conversation to help students in learning English, especially speaking ability has proven to be successful. This is supported by data from this study. First, the results of the interviews showed that students were more motivated and interested in learning English. Second, the meeting included three tests: Pre-test, post-test of the first cycle, and post-test of the second cycle. After using the guided conversation approach, the percentage of students who passed the KKM increased by 50%: 38.64 for post-test I and 88.64 for post-test II. 23 out of 26 students passed the KKM, showing that classroom action research proved successful.

Examining English learning students’ experiences related to home language use in a Physical Science and Language Development classroom

Research suggests that by allowing English Learner (EL) students to use their home languages in science class, they can better express their thinking and build content knowledge through underlying crosslinguistic awareness between languages. However, EL students’ educational backgrounds and home languages are incredibly varied. In this case study, we employ grounded theory to explore students' perceptions of their experiences in the context of a Physical Science and Language Development class [10]. We use a phenomenological approach to describe how the students experience their home language within this model of a science and language development class. Observation data, online video assignments, and small group, semi-structured interviews were used to find themes related to experiences of using home language in science class. The findings indicate varied student perspectives on the use of their home languages in science class. Some students preferred to use class time to practice using English, while others found value in using their home languages to help better understand science concepts. Student ideologies regarding English-only or multilingual practices for EL students varied. The findings also indicated that providing an opportunity for EL students to use their home languages in an asynchronous online communication platform outside of class was an effective strategy to allow time for students to practice English during science class, yet provide an opportunity to translate between home languages and English.

This study investigates the relationship between length of online YouTube English learning videos and learning effectiveness of English learners.

Refining and expanding accountability policy for English learners to support Lau implementation: A critical policy analysis

ABSTRACT Title I accountability requirements under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) represent the present-day instantiation of Lau, which requires schools to provide a program for English learners (ELs) that supports their meaningful engagement and to provide transparent information about EL program quality. This study uses critical policy analysis to explore whether ESSA accomplishes what it intends. Employing a parallel mixed methods design, we first analyze longitudinal data from two states to examine whether their approaches to assessing EL students’ academic performance and progress support valid claims about EL achievement. Then, we analyze focus group and interview data from educators, advocates, and families in states to understand how they assess the quality of a school’s EL program. Taken together, our findings highlight the need for the incorporation of multiple perspectives into the design of state accountability systems and for the development of robust data systems that facilitate the sharing of accurate and nuanced information related to EL student outcomes and opportunities.

Teaching Listening Skills to EFL Students Using AI-Driven Technology-Based Media

The aim of this paper is to find how much AI can be useful or as an aid in developing listening skill. A review has been made to past studies as well as the recent developments and innovations made by linguists and teaching community, yielding relevant observations. The present writing is an attempt at exhibiting how much the latest technology is effective which has been tailor-made to suit determined purpose directed at developing the listening skills of EFL learners. It is well established being significant and continues to gain importance in serving needs of education, sparking interest among students and teachers, the latter for innovating delivery of lessons. Teaching EFL college level students uses English as the medium of instruction for language teaching subjects. It is, however, noticed that difficulties crop up at school, where the students use native language for learning syllabi-related subjects, and where it is noticed that there is low comprehension capacity in the learners that needs to be pushed up to learn second language with success. The present research effort has brought to light the difficulties experienced by students in English learning as they struggle to reach a reasonable level of learning with success. This is despite there being other materials to use where old/traditional system is otherwise thought adequate. Modern approaches were brought into use by which AI-powered tools have removed difficulties they used to experience learning the traditional way resorting to written prescribed books; they experienced that books were monotonous and boring. The researchers made quite a few studies in different educational institutions and recognized the ability of AI aided media to make listening skill learning and teaching of English interesting and easy. AI has enabled educators to develop material and make it user-friendly and student-oriented for facilitating language learning easy. Language Listening builds enhanced capacity enabling EFL students to hear sounds of words of English using AI-aided tools. The present paper has discovered the utility of modern virtual tools as significant in facilitating learners’ success in developed listening skill. Tools which are created using AI have proved very help as they extend tremendous help in increasing and developing practical listening skills of not only the teachers but also, and primarily, the EFL students.

The Implementation Of Teams Game Tournament (TGT) To Improve Students’ Writing Ability Of Second Grade Students In SMP Negeri 7 Padang

This study aimed to determine whether the implementation of the Teams Game Tournament (TGT) can improve students’ writing abilities in learning English of second grade students in SMP Negeri 7 Padang. The population was second grade students in SMP Negeri 7 Padang. The sample of this research was 33 students of VIII.5 class. This type of research was quantitative. The method used was a pre-experimental design, with one group pre-test and post-test. The result of the data showed that the average students score on the post-test was (89,45) higher that the average score on the pre-test (60.24). From the t-test, the study showed that the t-test value (11,54) is higher that t-table (1,697) at a significance level of 0,05 with degree freedom (df) = 32. This result meant that there was a significant difference. This indicated that the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted and the nul hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Hence, it can be concluded that the implementation of Teams Game Tournament (TGT) significantly improve students’ writing ability.

Development and Validation of a Comprehensive English Test for Sophomore Students in Liaoning, China

The English proficiency of Chinese college students varies in different regions and majors. For college students, it’s of great importance to know their strengths and weaknesses in the process of language learning and to have targeted practice . For language teachers, it is quite significant to identify the problems and needs of students in English learning, to adjust the teaching methods and contents and to improve the teaching effect. At the same time, the feedback of the test results can also promote the school’s attention to and investment i n English teaching and promote the in depth reform of English teaching. In this procedure, a comprehensive English test is an effective way. This study describes developing and validating a comprehensive English test for sophomore students at Shenyang Univ ersity of Chemistry and Technology in Liaoning, China. The test is designed to assess students' English proficiency upon completing the "New Century College English Reading" course. The research employed a mixed methods approach, combining qualitative meth ods for test development and expert review with quantitative methods for statistical validation. The test development process included content analysis of course materials, creation of test specifications aligned with course objectives, and item writi ng. T he test covers four key language domains: listening, reading, translation, and writing. Validation is conducted through expert r eview using a content, construct, and face validity checklist. Five experienced English language teaching and assessment experts evaluated the test using a 15 item checklist with a 5 point Likert scale. Results showed high overall validity, with mean scores above 4.0 for content validity, construct validity, and face validity, indicating strong agreement among experts on the test' s validation. While the study provides strong evidence for the test's validity, limitations include the sample size and geographic scope. Future research directions include longitudinal studies to assess predictive validity and cross regional validation to evaluate the test's applicability across China's educational contexts. This study contributes to English language assessment in Chines e higher education in Liaoning province. It provides a validated tool that aligns closely with curriculum objectives and a ddresses the need for comprehensive language proficiency evaluation.

Generative AI in student English learning in Thai higher education: More engagement, better outcomes?

Despite the growing body of research exploring artificial intelligence (AI) in educational contexts, there remains a critical gap in understanding the specific effects of generative AI (GAI) on English language learning, particularly within higher education in Thailand. This study addresses this gap by employing an explanatory sequential mixed-method design to explore both student and teacher perspectives. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U tests, Spearman correlation analysis, and Kendall–Theil regression to examine students' acceptance, usage, and the relationship between GAI engagement and academic performance. Qualitative data, collected through structured written interviews, were analyzed using thematic analysis to uncover key themes from both student and teacher narratives. Quantitative findings reveal high student acceptance of GAI tools in terms of performance expectancy (M = 3.66, SD = .58), effort expectancy (M = 3.61, SD = .59), facilitating conditions (M = 3.51, SD = .59), and use behavior (M = 3.52, SD = .48), while social influence remained relatively lower (M = 3.31, SD = .54). Mann-Whitney U tests showed no statistically significant differences in GAI usage across high- and low-performing students (p > .05). Correlation analyses indicated strong associations between performance expectancy and other factors (ρ = .87, p < .001), yet no significant correlation with GPA (ρ = −.06, p = .76). Qualitative results from student reflections revealed improved efficiency, enhanced engagement, and increased linguistic confidence. Yet, concerns about overreliance on AI and the necessity for critical use were noted. Teacher narratives accentuated ethical concerns and the potential for GAI misuse, highlighting the need for balanced, responsible integration of AI into pedagogical practices. These findings underscore the potential of GAI to enhance learning experiences while emphasizing the importance of maintaining academic integrity and fostering critical thinking.

Authentic Assessment of English Language Learners Used in An Indonesia High School

The purpose of this study is to describe (1) the type of assessment used by teachers in assessing student in learning english and (2) the authentic assessment used by teachers in assessing students in learning english. The research method used is qualitative with a descriptive type. The sample technique used is purposive sampling. Two English language teachers in grades ten and eleven at SMA Muhammadiyah Special Program Kottabarat Surakarta are the subjects of this study. Interviews, documentation, and observation are the research methods used. The data analysis techniques used are data collection, data reduction, data presentation and then conclusion drawn. The researcher found that there are 4 types of assessments used by the two teachers, namely 1) formative assessment, namely in the form of assignments and try in tests, 2) summative assessment, namely in the form of midterm exams and final semester exams, 3) formal assessments, 4) informal assessments. The authentic assessment used by both teachers in English learning is an essay or portfolio.

Computer science for English learners: supporting teacher learning and improved practice to engage multilinguals in AP computer science principles

Multilingual learners, also known as English learners (ELs), are underrepresented in K-12 computer science (CS) courses, where they often struggle. This paper demonstrates how a Computer Science for English Learners (CSforEL) professional development (PD) program supported Advanced Placement CS Principles (APCSP) teachers in attending to both content and language demands while teaching ELs. We highlight qualitative findings showcasing how CSforEL PD yielded (micro)shifts in teacher practice and EL Student-Content interactions. Specifically, we discuss how unique instructional scaffolds offered within the PD shifted teachers’ awareness regarding EL students’ needs, and helped them support their EL students more effectively.

Exploring the application of ChatGPT in learning English of students – A study on perception of sophomores at Nguyen Tat Thanh University

This research focuses on analysing the application of ChatGPT, which is a natural language processing model, in learning English at the university level. A survey was conducted in 244 sophomore at Nguyen Tat Thanh University, to investigate their opinions on the use of ChatGPT in education. Results indicate that the majority of students hold a positive view towards using ChatGPT in learning English and believe that it can help improve their English skills. The research also proposes several ways to enhance the effectiveness of using ChatGPT in learning. Latina English Learners’ persistence in STEM undergraduate programs: framed within the Community Cultural Wealth Model

This study seeks to understand the challenges Latina English Learner (EL) students encounter in STEM and investigate how Latina ELs persist in these academic domains. Using an interpretive phenomenological design, we interviewed 15 Latina ELs to explore the strategies Latina ELs employ to persist through undergraduate STEM programs. We also seek to understand the cultural wealth that Latina EL students draw upon to persist in STEM programs. Major themes highlight Latina EL students using strong generational links that facilitate resiliency, taking advantage of bilingualism, having a clear career vision, prioritizing their mental and emotional health, forming strong social connections, and combatting discrimination and microaggressions. The study makes important recommendations to guide higher education institutions and STEM departments to promote diversity and inclusivity within their domains.

Utilizing AI (Artificial Intelligence) to Have Positive Impacts on Students in Learning English

This research explored the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to positively impact on students in learning English. However, the study also recognized the potential negative impacts of AI, such as over-reliance on technology, reduced language expression and grammar proficiency. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative research was to investigate how AI can be utilized to positively influence students in the context of English language learning. The research method involved collecting and analyzing first-hand experiences from students to understand the nuances of AI integration in English education. In this study, the researchers took second semester students of the English Education Study Program, University of Nias as participants. The research was conducted at the University of Nias. How to use AI to have a positive impact on students in learning English is by filtering the answers generated from AI.
