Using progress logs to research the information behaviour of higher education students in prison

Introduction. This short paper introduces 'progress logs', an adaptation of the solicited diary method, and details their planned use in a forthcoming study on the information behaviour of students in transition from prison to higher education. Development of the method. Progress logs are designed to capture individual-level qualitative data over a period of time, using prompts which build on previous prompts to generate rich data, allow opportunities for participant reflection and provide a narrative of progress. The study context. The suitability of this method for studying the behaviour of individuals in transition is evaluated. Details of the proposed study are provided, including consideration of sampling, recruitment and ethics. Application of the method. The application of the progress logs method to the study context is described, covering the duration, frequency of prompts and choice of topics. Strengths and limitations. The strengths and weaknesses of this method are evaluated. Despite sharing some of the drawbacks of the solicited diary method, progress logs also build on their advantages to build a narrative of change over time. Conclusions. It is concluded that progress logs offer a suitable means to gather in-depth data about individuals’ information behaviour, especially during transitions.

The study identifies significant challenges posed by the influx of notifications, such as information overload, distraction, and stress. It also examines the skills and strategies students employ to manage and prioritize notifications, emphasizing the need for improved mobile information literacy (MoIL). Interviews and observations reveal varied user engagement with notifications, highlighting the dual role of notifications as both end-point information containers and triggers for deeper information-seeking behavior. The findings suggest that while notifications enhance efficiency and immediacy in accessing information, they also necessitate new coping mechanisms to mitigate negative impacts. This research contributes to the field of information behavior by offering insights into the effective use of mobile notifications and proposing better notification system designs to foster enhanced information literacy in an increasingly connected world.

Information behaviour of students inspired by lecturers' feedback

ABSTRACT Feedback is identified in the works of researchers as an essential element for improving the learning process of students. Research shows that lecturer's feedback creates value when it provides not only appraisal information but also links to further learning. This type of feedback affects the learner’s information behaviour, i.e., encourages searching for additional information and using it in the learning process. The paper aims to analyze the peculiarities of students’ information behaviour during feedback. The research object is investigated from an information science perspective, using theories of information behaviour. An exploratory quantitative survey of 111 Communication BA students from Vilnius University, Lithuania, was conducted. The results of the study revealed the characteristics of feedback inspired by information behaviour: the feedback provided by the lecture is the primary source of information; feedback promotes individual information search; timely feedback encourages proactive information behaviour.

The impact of COVID-19 on reading behaviors among high school students through the adoption of mobile learning

In this study, the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on Jordanian high school students’ reading habits and attitudes was examined. COVID-19 has indeed affected education systems all over the world; education institutions all over the world were compelled to implement innovative technological approaches so that education could still be delivered to students, fulfilling the academic expectations, while the Sustainable Learning and Education (SLE) ideals are consistently embraced. One of these approaches has been the use of mobile learning applications (MLA). These applications (MLAs) employ some prominent features of mobile apps, to allow students to collaborate and participate in purposeful online learning. Still, the success of any technology is dictated by the acceptance of the user, in this context, the acceptance of students. In other words, student acceptance of MLA will determine the success of MLA. Accordingly, the effect of COVID-19 lockdown on the information behavior of high school students was examined in this study, with MLA being used by these students. Data were gathered from 394 high school students in Jordan. These students were chosen randomly, and they were all mobile phone users. The data covered the 2022–2023 fall term and were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Based on the analyses results: Self-Efficacy and Perceived Compatibility had significant impact on Perceived Performance Expectancy and Perceived Effort Expectancy; Perceived Convenience and Perceived Effort Expectancy had significant impact on Perceived Performance Expectancy; Perceived Enjoyment had significant impact on the Behavioral Intention to use MLA; COVID-19 had significant impact on the Behavioral Intention to use MLA; Perceived Compatibility showed no significant impact on Perceived Enjoyment; and Perceived Effort Expectancy, Perceived Performance Expectancy and Perceived Compatibility showed no significant impact on the Behavioral Intention to use MLA. The outcomes of this study demonstrate a practical indication in support of digital information behavior among high school students in this era.

Information behavior of cum laude graduates at Universitas Riau in 2020

Every student has different information behavior, especially cum laude students at Riau University in 2020. Based on graduation percentage, students who hold cum laude predicate amounted to 6,22% of the total graduates in 2020. This research aimed to describe the information behavior of cum laude students at Riau University in 2020 through analysis initiation stage, selection stage, exploration stage, formulation stage, collection stage, and presentation stage. This research was qualitative through the selection of informants was based on the criteria of cum laude students with the highest scores from each faculty. The results showed that the initiation stage was based on motivation, interest, learning strategies, syllabus study, and discussion. In the selection stage, general topics were identified through mind mapping and preliminary information search. The exploration stage was carried out by searching for information in the libraries and others. In the formulation stage, the focus was on finding information with specific content, and there was a sense of optimism about collecting and using that information. The collection stage was carried out by gathering information, paying attention to information retrieval, and evaluating information. The presentation stage showed a sense of satisfaction and the process of sharing information. Every cum laude student experiences unique stages in the information-seeking process. The students at each stage the information behavior have taken advantage of all available sources of information and supported by the motivation within them.

Thinking style and strategies of informational behaviour of internet users

ABSTRACT Background The development of digital reality sets the task of studying the thinking styles and strategies of working with information of higher school students. The style of thinking is understood by the authors as a kind of combination of thinking functions aimed at the perception, analysis and processing of information. The aim of the research is to study the features of students’ thinking styles and strategies of their informational behaviour in the context of Internet interaction. Methods The study was carried out using the author’s questionnaire ‘Style of thinking’, the methodology ‘Strategies of informational behaviour’ (Abakumova, Grishina, and Zvezdina 2022). The sample included 115 students of both genders aged 18–21 years. The study was conducted on the basis of Kalmyk State University (Elista, Kalmykia, Russia). Results Groups of students with dominant styles of thinking were identified. It was shown that the severity and ratio of informational behaviour strategies differs among students with different dominant thinking styles. Significant relationships between the styles of thinking and strategies of informational behaviour of students were revealed. Conclusions Thinking styles and strategies of information behaviour of students have significant relationships.

Zachowania informacyjne czeskich i słowackich studentów w czasie pandemii COVID-19 z naciskiem na Hoaxes i Misinformation

The Institute of Czech Language and Library Science of the Faculty of Philosophy and Science of the Silesian University in Opava (Czechia), in cooperation with the Department of Library and Information Science of the Faculty of Philosophy of Comenius University in Bratislava (Slovakia), conducted comparative research on information behavior of university students during the COVID-19 pandemic and related lockdowns. The Czech data collection was made possible within the framework of an internal student grant competition at Silesian University (SGS/2/2021 and SGS/2/2022). In the first phase, data was gathered through online question-naires with open-ended questions emphasizing self-reflective thinking of the respondents. In the second phase, the data was collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with selected participants from the first phase. The data collection in Slovakia was supported by the Agency for Research and Development Support under contract APVV-19-0074 and was also part of the project VEGA 1/0360/21 - Social Representations of Ethical Challenges of the Digital Information Revolution. With a particular focus on the area of hoaxes and misinfor-mation, a comparison of the results showed that the experiences of students from different countries are very similar despite the adjusted method, time gap, and different sample size of the respondents.

Health Misinformation Across Multiple Digital Ecologies: Qualitative Study of Data From Interviews With International Students.

BackgroundTransient migrants such as international students have received limited support from host country governments throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. An increase in misinformation, resulting in poor health outcomes for individuals, may impact an already vulnerable group.ObjectiveExisting research examines the spread of misinformation. Similarly, there is extensive literature on the health information behavior of international students. However, there is a gap in the literature focusing on international students’ interaction with health misinformation. This exploratory research aims to address this gap by examining international students’ interaction with health misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsA total of 11 participants took part in semistructured interviews and a health misinformation-identification exercise via Zoom. The data collected were subjected to qualitative thematic analysis. Multiple rounds of coding, checked by other coders, revealed 2 themes and 6 subthemes.ResultsThe 2 main themes that emerged were (1) approaches to dealing with health misinformation and (2) how international students navigate across multiple digital ecologies. Results show that international students who draw on multiple digital ecologies for information reliably identify misinformation, suggesting that the use of multiple digital ecologies may have a protective effect against health misinformation.ConclusionsFindings show that international students encounter health misinformation across multiple digital ecologies, and they also compare information across multiple ecologies. This comparison may support them in identifying health misinformation. Thus, the findings of this study combat narratives of international students’ susceptibility to misinformation.

Perilaku Informasi Mahasiswa dalam Perspektif Pengalaman Informasi

Experience which is something that involves developing students' awareness of an event. Information experience as student awareness in interacting with information and types of information both from access, sources and information media. Students who are referred to as the net generation have the characteristics of freedom, customization, scruncity, integrity, collaboration, entertainment, speed and innovation. The student's information experience will be studied intensely and in depth, as a natural process that will refer to the real life of the object or subject to be studied through observation and interviews. Observation of student activities on information behavior in meeting information needs through various media, both conventional media and digital media. The intensity of student interaction with devices or information channels has a significant influence on student information behavior. The information channels used by students also vary from conventional to digital based on the habits of students.

PERILAKU PENCARIAN INFORMASI SISWA DALAM MODEL PEMBELAJARAN JARAK JAUH DI MASA PANDEMI COVID-19

The pandemic Covid-19 has impact most of human activities, one of them is education. The implementation of distance learning has influence for the parents, teachers, and students who are the main subjects in education, as though increased stress, less of competency development, or technical learning problems related to fulfill information needs. In case the problems abandoned, it will hinder the students-development, the development of sustainable education, and the progress of the nation. This research aims to determine the information behavior of students of SMAN 1 Cicalengka in overcome learning constraints during the pandemic Covid-19. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. Data collection techniques is using triangulation data, through observation/surveys, interviews, and literature study. The population were all students of SMAN 1 Cicalengka with 5 informants. It uses the Ohotshi-Gottschalg-Duque information-behavior model as conceptual framework. The results showed that: First, students information needs were at the concious, visceral, and adapted levels; Second, information needs are mostly related with learning materials, motivation, health, hobbies, college even job vacancies; Third, students information behavior based on habits and intuitions, most of students do not understand the process of extracting because they do not recognize the domain of the information need. The implication that learning based on library is necessity at the level of educational unit that collaborates between teachers and school librarians.

Analisis Perilaku Informasi Mahasiswa Universitas Lampung: Suatu Kajian pada Proses Penelusuran Koleksi Karya Ilmiah dan Koleksi Sirkulasi

Information and communication technology in its development has an effect on human life covering social, economic, cultural aspects, including libraries.Libraries are required to provide up to date information and in diverse forms. There are differences in information behavior of University Students of Lampung on searching collections of scientific paper and circulation collections. The aims of this research are to find out the information behavior of students of Lampung University in the process of tracing collections of scientific works and circulation collections, and mention the similarities and regulations of information behavior in the search of collections of scientific works and searches of circulation collections. This research methode uses qualitative descriptive with data collection techniques through observation, documentation data and literature study. The results obtained are : information behavior University Student of Lampung on searching collections of scientific papers are: most students of Lampung University on searching collection of scientific papers using a laptop to access on the link: digilib.unila.ac.id., log in, search the faculty, study programs, published years and titles of scientific paper, do the citation, and save cited to file work. Information behavior University Students of Lampung on searching circulation collections are: most University Student of Lampung on searching circulation collections using the computer library provided, access on the link: opac.unila.ac.id (online catalog), write down the name of the author or the title of book, record the call number of the circulation collections of interest, to the circulation collection shelves, take circulation collections to read or borrow to take home. Finding the Answers: Community College Students’ Non-Academic Information Behaviors

ABSTRACT While limited research on the information behaviors of community college students exists, the theories of Elfreda Chatman have not been used to develop understanding of this population. Community college students are more likely to be people of color and/or lower income than their peers in four-year colleges, making them potentially more likely to experience information poverty. This study explored if and how Chatman’s theories explain the information behaviors of students at a highly diverse, urban community college. Thirteen students were interviewed using open-ended, qualitative prompts to describe their information seeking and use as it pertains to their college experiences, specifically advisement, financial aid, and understanding course requirements. Students indicated that they used interpersonal and online resources in some combination for all of their information needs for school and in everyday life. The students did not describe the information poverty theorized in many of Chatman’s studies. However, it became clear from their responses that the students’ information seeking and use, as well as their understanding of their own information behaviors, support a view of the community college as a small world that privileges information seeking as a normative behavior.

INFORMATION SEEKING BEHAVIOUR OF PROFESSORS AND STUDENTS OF ALLAHABAD UNIVERSITY AND ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY: A COMPARATIVE STUDY

Information seeking behaviour is defined as a human habit that involves searching for information in a deliberate manner in order to fill a gap. This conduct might be difficult to define at times. As a user, professors and students, university libraries are the first place they look for information. The primary goal of this research is to look at the information requirements and behaviour of students and professors at Allahabad University and Aligarh Muslim University. The data for this study was gathered using a well-structured questionnaire from 50 Professors and 150 pupils. The study focuses on a variety of characteristics of their techniques and behaviour while looking for information, as well as barriers for collecting their requirements, the purpose and frequency of library visits, user satisfaction, and library services.

To build upon solid rock or to build upon sand:

Starting with a rereading of the information literacy theories, we characterized the development of this concept, distinguish it and relate it with associated terms. After this theoretical framing, we focused on the role of the information literacy in the school context. We present our study based in the analyses of information behaviour, reading habits and information practices of students in Vila do Conde municipal area, using the school library collections and technological resources, considering also the location, access and use of information.
 We do a brief general view over this group of school libraries in this municipal area, but we focused our analysis of the research universe in three schools of 1st level, one E.B. 2,3 and another secondary school, using an inquiry by a questionnaire. To better contextualise our study we also make the characterization and framing of each school library in its surroundings (city, rural and piscatorial) in order to allow a comparative analysis of the results.

The role of mass media in the formation of the ethnic identity of students in the context of the infodemia

The relevance of the study is due to the need for a deeper understanding of the factors that influence the formation of ethnic identity of modern youth. Most scientists agree that ethnic identity is formed mainly spontaneously, in the process of primary socialization of the individual, but this process is subject to the same spontaneous influences throughout the entire period of growing up. The mass media and the Internet space are the most powerful factors influencing modern people, including in the sphere of forming ideas about their ethnic group, its traditions and culture. The article presents the results of an empirical study conducted at the Don State Technical University, Rostov-on-Don, Russia, with a total sample of 100 people. Authors revealed significant differences in the psychological characteristics of students with different types of ethnic identity: hypo-identity, normal identity and hyper-identity. It was also revealed that the media is one of the factors in the formation of negative types of ethnic identity: students with hypoidenticity and hyperidenticity mainly receive information about other ethnic groups from media sources; students with normal identity receive such information in the family or from the close environment. Further research will be aimed at studying the information behavior of students with different types of ethnic identity, which will allow us to develop recommendations for preventing the spread of destructive forms of behavior on the Internet.

Information Literacies of PhD Students: A Hermeneutic Dialectic Study within the Health Sciences

Doctoral studies offer a unique phase in the development and legitimisation of researchers, in which PhD students shift from consumption to production of knowledge. While literature exists concerning the information behaviour of graduate students and researchers, there is little work which focuses specifically on the information literacies of PhD students within the health sciences. To better understand this user group, we undertook a qualitative study at the Research School of Health and Welfare in Jönköping, Sweden. Twelve open-ended interviews with both PhD students and their supervisors were conducted and analysed according to a hermeneutic dialectic process. Findings revealed that the supervisors commonly assumed that PhD students already have necessary information literacy skills. Yet some of the students self-reported feeling uncertain when searching and getting ‘stuck’ with one strategy. Responses also indicated that the PhD students and their supervisors were often unaware of what services and support the library could provide.

Re-examining the Socialization of Black Doctoral Students through the Lens of Information Theory

The socialization of Black doctoral students has been studied from many theoretical and conceptual standpoints, with the exception of information theory. In this paper, the conceptual and theoretical frameworks of small worlds and the Theory of Normative Behavior developed by information behavior scholar Elfreda Chatman are used to illuminate the information behaviors that are implicit in the socialization of Black doctoral students. Doctoral student socialization is enacted through faculty and peer relationships that communicate the norms, values, and expectations for performance that facilitate academic and social integration in graduate school in preparation for faculty roles in the academy. Despite the importance of socialization for student success, research indicates that Black doctoral students experience racism, isolation, and hostile climates in predominantly white institutions, which jeopardizes their chances for a successful outcome. Through a review of literature about the socialization of Black doctoral students in the United States, viewed through the lens of Elfreda Chatman’s theoretical frameworks, this paper examines doctoral education as a small world characterized by social and cultural norms that facilitate or hinder the socialization of Black doctoral students. Given the absence of an explicit focus on race in Chatman’s research, the salience of race as a context for the experiences and information behaviors of Black doctoral students is discussed. Areas for future research about the socialization of Black doctoral students in library and information studies are also identified.

The role of digital information use on student performance and collaboration in marginal universities

Using technology to facilitate learning in universities and other higher education institutions (HEIs) has become common practice due to its ability to reduce barriers related to time and space in traditional learning environments. However, current literature mostly focuses on the use of the technology and not on the use of the information it conveys. Also, very few studies focus on technology adoption in universities and HEIs in developing countries, especially those in Africa. Thus, we propose a model that explains the changing information behaviors of students in this digital age and the effect this has on their learning outcomes. We collected questionnaire data from 303 students and analyzed the data using structural equation modelling partial least squares (SEM-PLS). We found that our proposed model explains 60.2 % of student satisfaction, 24.2 % of academic performance, 24.1 % of information sharing, and 19.8 % of their information exchange behavior. This study confirms that the use of digital information and its antecedent factors have significant effects on the college experience of students. This has several implications for information systems research and practice, especially in the design and assessment of technology use in learning environments.

Voices and Choices: Critical Information/Media Literacy and Behrman’s Practices

ABSTRACT Studies on information and media literacy focus on describing activities and frameworks individually, and most of the time, connect within the field of library science. However, other frameworks and practices can be used. This case study presents the application of Behrman’s Critical Literacy Practices to information and media literacy to engage students to think critically about information within their field of study. The purpose of this research is to model the information behavior of education students through the perspective of constructivist learning. The study used a qualitative method with six upper-level undergraduate education majors. Activities that comprise practices and theories in both education and library sciences are presented to form a continuous exposure to critical thinking. Factors that influenced how students perceived the validity of information came from personal, educational, and societal factors. This research contributes to the ongoing discussion about critical thinking skills in undergraduate students, presenting a model that describes how practices from other fields can be used and incorporated with information and media literacy.
