Environmental influence on the functional ecological structure of benthic macrofaunal communities of the northwest Iberian coast

Evaluating the functional structure of benthic macrofaunal communities provides insights into how environmental drivers shape the ecosystem and establishes a baseline knowledge of the communities’ dynamics and functioning. This understanding allows the prediction of responses to environmental changes and the implementation of efficient conservation and management strategies. Here we examine the structures and functions of benthic macrofaunal communities on the Northwest Iberian coast concerning environmental factors such as depth, hydrodynamic energy, and bottom type. The results suggest that the community assemblages and their function are structured by factors which influence food availability and habitat heterogeneity. The different sites exhibited different trait compositions and functional structures, indicating that distinct functions are performed according to environmental conditions. The communities found in sandy bottom areas with low hydrodynamic conditions presented frail functionality and demonstrated high vulnerability to alterations in their environment. Conversely, the communities found in rocky bottoms with high hydrodynamic conditions exhibited a fulfilled functional niche space, rendering them more resilient to such changes and less prone to loss of function. Although the analyses did not reveal significant differences in the factor depth, its influence on several factors seems relevant in shaping the functional structure of the communities. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the impact of local environmental conditions on ecosystem functioning, to effectively implement monitoring, management, and conservation strategies.

What has Changed in 20 Years? Structure and Function of Soft-sediment Macrofauna in a Subarctic Embayment, Newfoundland (Canada)

Understanding how natural and anthropogenic disturbances affect the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems is central to predicting future dynamics. Placentia Bay is an Ecologically and Biologically Significant Area (EBSA) in the North Atlantic exposed to multiple stressors (e.g., rising sea surface temperatures, tanker traffic, and aquaculture). To investigate changes in the community and functional structure of soft-sediment macrofauna as well as environmental drivers of observed variation, we compared contemporary (2019–2020) and historical (1998) samples at eight stations (n = 77) collected 21 years apart. Although community and functional structure differed between these time points, functional traits were maintained (i.e., no loss of 36 trait modalities). Overall, 37% of species/taxa were only observed in either the historical or contemporary community, and the contemporary community exhibited lower macrofaunal density but had similar richness, resulting in higher evenness and diversity. Highly tolerant subsurface deposit feeders having small body sizes (< 10 mm) and direct development dominated the historical community. The contemporary community had nearly equal proportions of surface and subsurface deposit feeders with small to medium body sizes (< 10–50 mm) with pelagic larvae, and the proportion of highly tolerant species/taxa was reduced. These changes likely reflect the reduction in polychaetes (91 vs. 58%) and increased bivalves (4 vs. 25%) relative to the historical time point. Community variation was driven by changes in the sedimentary habitat. Contemporary versus historical sediments were ~ 4.5x coarser (possibly due to storms) with higher levels of sedimentary organic matter. This work contributes to advancing the understanding of relationships between benthic macrofauna, functional traits, and the sedimentary habitat in coastal environments.

Quantifying direct and indirect linkages between seagrasses, environment and associated macrofauna in a temperate lagoon

AbstractSeagrass ecosystems play a vital role in marine environments, providing essential services, including physical habitat that supports a species diversity critical to robust trophic structures. However, seagrass loss due to various influences raises concerns about the persistence of these ecosystems. Seagrass‐associated macrofauna serve as indicators of environmental health, noting change or stability. This study investigated the structural and environmental drivers influencing macrofaunal communities associated with seagrass (Zostera capensis) in a temperate lagoon. Variation in macrofaunal community structure across phenotypically distinct seagrass populations found large‐leaved morphotypes in deeper intertidal stands to support higher species diversity and richness. Conversely, small‐leaved populations in higher shore positions had a greater abundance of desiccation‐resistant gastropods. Seasonal differences were significant, with higher abundances generally observed during spring and summer, while diversity and richness peaked in autumn and winter. Structural equation modelling revealed shoot densities and leaf width to have positive direct effects on macrofaunal abundance, while temperature and tidal exposure produced significant indirect effects. Temperature had a direct effect on seagrass structure and significantly influenced five out of six seagrass metrics measured. Observations of seagrass distribution in the lagoon indicate significant declines in large‐leaved populations with likely adverse consequences for associated macrofauna and related trophic levels.

Salmon farming alters the structure and functioning of Norwegian maerl bed communities

Abstract Effluents resulting from fish farming activities can alter the structure and functioning of benthic ecosystems. In Norway, recent technological advances within the salmon industry have facilitated the expansion of aquaculture into shallower locations, leading to additional pressures upon coastal habitats. Maerl/rhodolith beds are important bioengineers in coastal waters—supporting highly diverse associated macrofaunal communities—and are likely to be particularly at risk. This study aims to investigate the environmental changes induced by fish farms in their vicinity and their impact on the structure and functioning of maerl bed macrofaunal communities. High dissolved nutrients and organic enrichment levels were observed close to the cages, associated with lower live maerl cover. Overall, the most substantial impact of salmon farms on macrofaunal communities was observed within 100 m from the cages. Nevertheless, changes in the structure and functioning of assemblages were evidenced up to 300 m. In the vicinity of the cages, communities were characterized by the dominance of endobenthic subsurface deposit feeders and opportunistic species, notably the polychaetes Chaetozone sp., Capitella sp. and Scoloplos armiger. Conversely, sites situated farther away from the cages exhibited higher abundances of epibenthic taxa, including crawlers, grazers and species sensitive to organic enrichment. Sites unaffected by the presence of fish farms were described by high abundances of the ophiuroid Ophiura robusta, the polychaete Proclea graffi and ostracods, reflecting more favourable environmental conditions. Such changes in macrofaunal communities highlight the vulnerability of maerl beds to the impacts of aquaculture, thus emphasizing the importance of rigorous site selection when establishing new fish farming facilities.

Decadal changes of macrofauna community in a semi-enclosed Bay of Yueqing in East China Sea

To reveal the long-term variation of macrofauna community in Yueqing Bay, an aquacultural bay famous for its shellfish culturing in the East China Sea, macrofauna samples were collected in three period from 2002 to 2003 and 2006–2007 to 2020–2021. The results show that macrofaunal community structure in this area has changed significantly (ANOSIM, p < 0.01) in nearly two decades with significant decreases in species number, biodiversity index and average biomass. Meanwhile, the taxa composition also changed significantly as the dominance of annelid increased while that of mollusks, echinoderms and vertebrates decreased. As a consequence of the variation of taxa composition and total biomass, macrofauna community showed a tendency of miniaturization as individuals with smaller body size and lower biomass dominated the community. According to the results of CCA analysis, temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen content were the main environmental factors that restricted the species composition of macrofauna community. Further studies still needed to reveal the main reasons that cause the variation of macrofauna community. Overall, the results of this study suggest that the present status of Yueqing Bay benthic ecosystem is concerning from a macrobenthos perspective, as the biodiversity index and biomass of macrofauna decreased significantly. Effective measures should be taken in urgently to restrain the safety and function of coastal ecosystems.

The interplay of co-occurring ecosystem engineers shapes the structure of benthic communities – a mesocosm experiment

IntroductionEcosystem engineers play a pivotal role in shaping habitats through their activities and presence. In shallow Baltic waters, seagrasses, patch-forming mussels, and infaunal clams modify soft bottom habitats, impacting benthic community structure. While the individual effects of these ecosystem engineers are well studied, interactions among co-occurring engineers are poorly understood. MethodsWe conducted a mesocosm experiment to assess the independent and combined impacts of seagrass (Zostera marina), epifaunal mussels (Mytilus spp.), and infaunal clams (Macoma balthica) on invertebrate colonization in soft sediments. ResultsOur findings reveal significant engineer-driven alterations in macrofaunal community structure. Combined engineer effects diverged from individual impacts, indicating potential synergies or antagonisms in sediment (re)colonization. Notably, a higher number of engineer species positively affected the diversity of settled macrofauna, with the lowest macrofaunal abundance and biomass but the highest Shannon diversity found in the presence of all three engineers. DiscussionResults suggest that seagrass, mussels, and clams influence benthos through larval settlement and sediment biogeochemistry, providing insights into the distinct roles of habitat-forming organisms in shaping the benthic communities in coastal ecosystems of the Baltic Sea.

Patterns of diversity in subtidal marine macrofaunal communities: Insights from a semi-enclosed bay system in the Northeast Atlantic

The complexity of describing patterns and scales of variation in the distribution of species has created a delay in our understanding of the natural world. Understanding ecological functioning is essential to develop ecosystem management projects and to uphold conservation measures. The objective of the present study was to describe the variation in the structure of subtidal marine macrofaunal communities in a semi-enclosed bay system in the Northeast Atlantic to determine the relative importance of environmental conditions (e.g., water depth and position in the Ría) and processes (e.g., colonisation). Four different sites were selected along the Ría de Vigo, two sampling sites were allocated to the outermost part of the Ría and the other two sampling sites in the middle part of the Ría, both with different depths each (4–5 m and 11–12 m), and sampled at 1-, 3-, and 6- months of colonisation. Our results suggest a distinction between the community 1 month of colonisation and the remaining, with the Mollusca and Arthropoda species responsible for creating the most dissimilarities. At a local diversity level, the communities did not reveal significant differences in the factor’s ‘depth’ or ‘position in the Ría’. Through the application of beta diversity, significant patterns of variation emerged, revealing the significant importance of the deeper sites in maintaining unique and diverse communities in that region.

Biodiversity patterns of the benthic macrofaunal communities across the intertidal sedimentary shores of two Antarctic islands

Antarctic benthic ecosystems support a unique fauna characterized by high levels of diversity and endemism. However, our knowledge of the macrofauna communities across the Antarctic intertidal sedimentary shore is limited, and their fundamental ecological features, including spatial variability, remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the abundance, community structure (i.e. taxa-specific abundance), and biodiversity patterns (α-, β-, and λ-diversity) of benthic macrofauna communities on intertidal sedimentary shores of two Antarctic islands (South Shetland archipelago, N of Antarctic Peninsula): Livingston and Deception. We conducted a quantitative sampling during two Austral summer campaigns (2004 and 2005), studying eleven intertidal sites, with five sites located on Livingston and six on Deception. Our results demonstrated a significantly higher abundance of intertidal benthic macrofauna communities on Livingston than on Deception. Furthermore, significant differences in community structure were observed between the two islands. In terms of biodiversity patterns, there were no significant differences in the number of taxa within communities (α-diversity) between the two islands. However, significant differences in the variation of community composition (determined by the number and identity of taxa) between intertidal sites (β-diversity) were observed, shedding light on the higher total taxa count (λ-diversity) on Livingston compared to Deception. We suggest that the island-specific characteristics (e.g., granulometric characteristics, ice disturbance, sedimentation rates, and geothermal activity) determine the differences observed in macrofauna communities. However, other ecological processes and factors are operating on different spatial and temporal scales (e.g., population dynamics, biotic interactions, oceanographic conditions, and climate change) that influence the occurrence and abundance of macrofaunal taxa. Our findings contribute to the fundamental understanding of the spatial variability of these communities and provide essential information for better management decisions and conservation practices in Antarctic coastal ecosystems.

Deep-sea macrofauna community recovery in Kaikōura canyon following an earthquake-triggered turbidity flow

Sediment density flows can transport massive amounts of sediment across large distances and can have dramatic, long-lasting impacts on deep-sea benthic communities. A canyon-flushing event in Kaikōura Canyon, New Zealand, triggered by the 2016 Mw 7.8 Kaikōura Earthquake, which included significant submarine mass wasting, debris and turbidity flows, provides an excellent opportunity to investigate the effects of this type of large-scale natural disturbance on benthic communities. The macrofauna community in the canyon was well characterised before the disturbance and the canyon described as a deep-sea benthic biomass hotspot. Macrofauna community structure before and after the event was analysed in a time series of sediment cores from 8 sites (∼400–1300 m water depth) collected 10 years and 6 years before, and 10 weeks, 10 months, and 4 years after the disturbance. The benthic community structure showed significant variability at all time points, but immediately after the 2016 disturbance abundances of all macrofauna dramatically decreased. Four years after the disturbance the benthic community was similar to, but not yet comparable to the pre-event community. The average abundances of most macrofauna increased over the 4 years post-earthquake, with polychaetes and bivalves being key taxa in the recovery process, especially 10 months and 4 years after the disturbance. Infauna abundances >5 cm below the seabed, remained low even 4 years after the event but the overall pattern of vertical faunal distribution was trending towards a pre-disturbance state. Community recovery was investigated in relation to changes in the physical characteristics of the habitat caused by the disturbance, using variables derived from sediment cores (e.g., sediment texture, organic matter, and pigment content). While the environmental variables explained relatively little of the overall variability in macrofauna community structure, key variables identified were related to particle size structure and food availability and quality. The minimum threshold time for the macrofauna community to fully recover, based on within-community similarity, was estimated to be between 5.6 and 6.7 years, although recovery was predicted to take up to 9 years if higher recovery thresholds were used. The management implications of this study are considered in comparison to the few studies of large-scale disturbances in the deep sea, in terms of their relevance to the efficacy of the marine reserve that encompasses Kaikōura Canyon, and potential implications for our understanding of the impacts of anthropogenic disturbances such as seabed mining.

Moving beyond traditional macrofaunal community structure studies in the Indian Ocean continental shelf: a research synthesis based on research weaving

The Indian Ocean (IO) continental shelf characterized by unique oceanographic and meteorological features and extreme habitat is a biodiversity hotspot region. Marine biodiversity provides valuable resources and services, in terms of economy, cultural, science, and education. Unsustainable exploitation and habitat degradation represent the greatest threat to biodiversity. Understanding how these services will change in the future requires knowledge of marine biodiversity. Although macrofaunal biodiversity is critical for the functioning of shelf systems, it has received much less attention, particularly in the IO, mainly due to logistics reasons precluding our ability to predict future changes. Here, we discuss the state of knowledge of macrofaunal ecology, to identify the knowledge gaps, which will allow for setting research priorities. The new framework in research synthesis, research weaving, that combines systematic mapping with bibliometric analysis was applied. The research weaving approach helps illustrate the evolution of research over time and identifies areas of current research interests and the performance of institutions and collaboration patterns. Data retrieved from the Web of Science were analyzed in the R and VOS Viewer software. The results highlight how macrofaunal research in IO is constrained by spatial and temporal scales, with the majority of studies focused on structural patterns. Moreover, most studies were conducted in a few countries (India, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and South Africa) using different sampling techniques hindering comparison within the IO habitats. Future studies investigating the macrofaunal community using a multidisciplinary approach and scientific collaboration (regional and international) can advance our efforts to close the marine biodiversity knowledge gaps.

The role of soil and plant cover as drivers of soil macrofauna of the Dnipro River floodplain ecosystems

Abstract Floodplain ecosystems are hotspots of biological diversity and perform important ecosystem functions in the landscape. The key to understanding the sustainability of ecosystem function is knowledge of the relationships between ecosystem components. The article reveals the role of morphological and physical properties of soil, as well as phytoindication of environmental factors as drivers of biological diversity of soil macrofauna of protected ecosystems of the Dnipro River floodplain. The studies were conducted in the forest floodplain ecosystems of the “Dnipro-Orilskiy” Nature Reserve. The studies of morphological properties of soils allowed us to identify the representatives of two reference groups: Fluvisol and Gleysol. The soil physical property data were subjected to principal component analysis, which extracted four principal components whose eigenvalues exceeded unity and described 79.9% of the variation in traits. The principal components of variation in soil physical properties and phytoindication assessments of environmental factors were used as predictors of the community structure of soil macrofauna. These predictors were able to explain 29.6% of the community variation. Physical soil properties are most important as a driver of soil macrofauna. The morphological properties of the soil and phytoindicator assessments are able to explain a much smaller part of the community variation. The pure influence of the predictors is small, indicating that they interact significantly in influencing soil animals. The results obtained have implications for the development of optimal strategies for floodplain ecosystem management and biodiversity conservation.

Trait-based assessment of polychaete assemblages distinguishes macrofaunal community structure among four distinct benthic eco-regions on a shallow arctic shelf

In a rapidly changing Arctic, effects of taxonomic and functional composition of infaunal benthic communities on ecosystem function are poorly characterized for many areas of the continental shelf environment. Infaunal macrobenthos perform essential ecosystem services in soft-sediment habitats, including sediment oxygenation, organic-matter burial, and nutrient regeneration. Changes in the distribution and composition of infauna are likely to impact these important processes. We investigated spatial patterns in macrofauna on the northern Bering and southern Chukchi Sea continental shelves in conjunction with a suite of environmental variables as part of the Arctic Shelf Growth, Advection, Respiration, and Deposition (ASGARD) project. Depth-stratified macrofauna samples (>500 μm) were collected from multi-cores in June 2017 and 2018. Abundance and biomass were recorded for broad taxonomic categories (phylum or class). Polychaetes were identified to family to capture well-described functional-trait information. Functional guilds were assigned to polychaete families, reflecting feeding mode, motility, and feeding structures. Macrofauna exhibited no significant spatial patterns when examined at higher taxonomic levels; however, analysis of polychaete families yielded three distinct station groups, and polychaete functional guilds yielded four distinct groups. These groups were aligned with variations in key habitat characteristics and suggest variation in ecosystem function across the study area. At sandy stations, tube-dwelling, particle-selective suspension and surface deposit feeders were relatively abundant, reflecting an advective system with moderate current speeds and low deposition. Sites with gravelly substrate and moderate levels of organic matter in deeper sediment layers likely experience sporadic organic-matter deposition and disturbance from scouring and were inhabited by larger-bodied species, including bivalves and subsurface deposit-feeding or carnivorous polychaetes. Muddy, offshore stations in the southern Chukchi Sea also contained large bivalves and large carnivorous polychaetes, with evidence of high bioturbation. At more coastal Chukchi Sea stations, macrofauna were dominated by small, motile polychaetes concentrated in the 1-cm surface layer, with indications of anaerobic conditions below. Overall, polychaete functional traits and vertical distribution reflected the quality and quantity of organic matter input and the depositional environment inferred from grain size and current speed, with implications for biogeochemical cycling in sediments.

Effect of Temporarily Opening and Closing the Marine Connection of a River Estuary

The lower Rio Grande is a river-dominated estuary that serves as the border between Texas, USA, and Tamaulipas, Mexico. River estuaries encompass the section of the river influenced by tidal exchange with the Gulf of Mexico, but the connection with the Rio Grande is intermittent and can be temporarily open or closed. During the 4.8-year study period, the river mouth was closed 30% of the time, mostly during average or dry climatic conditions, with the temporary closing of the river mouth being linked to hydrology. When the Rio Grande estuary is closed, salinity is low (1.5 psu compared to 4.8 psu when open), nitrate plus nitrite are low (4.4 μM compared to 31.5 μM when open), and ammonium is high (9.6 μM compared to 4.3 μM when open), but chlorophyll is similar (20 μg/L compared to 21 μg/L when open). Benthic macrofaunal abundance and biomass are higher when the river mouth is closed: 16,700 individuals m−2 and 3.3 g m−2 compared to 8800 individuals m−2 and 2.4 g m−2 when the Rio Grande river mouth is open. Benthic macrofaunal community structure is divided into two groups: chironomid larvae and Oligochaeta dominated when the river mouth was closed, whereas polychaetes Mediomastus ambiseta and Streblospio benedicti dominated when the river mouth was open. The implications of these results for managing freshwater flows are that the open and closed conditions each have a characteristic benthic macrofaunal community that is strongly influenced by system hydrology.

Macrobenthic diversity response to the atlantification of the Arctic Ocean (Fram Strait, 79°N) – A taxonomic and functional trait approach

This is the first study presenting temporal changes of the macrofauna biodiversity along the bathymetric gradient from the shelf to abyssal depths in the eastern Fram Striat. In this region, between 2004 and 2008, a significant increase in surface water temperature was observed due to the transport of Atlantic water from lower latitudes and was defined as a Warm Water Anomaly (WWA). Effects of the WWA in the eastern Fram Strait were observed across the entire food web, from the pelagic to the deep seafloor. The material for our study was collected before (in 2000) and after the WWA (in 2010 and 2017) at station depths ranging from 203 m to 5561 m. Samples of macrofauna and surface sediments were collected with use of a box corer to analyze species composition and functional traits, and environmental characteristics in sediments. We explore the influence of environmental changes on the structure (species composition and diversity) and functioning (functional trait composition and diversity) of macrofauna communities. An increase of primary production in surface waters during and after the WWA was reflected in a higher food availability at the seafloor from shelf to abyssal depths. Warming induced environmental changes led to an increase of macrofauna density and taxonomic diversity at all water depths. Macrofauna species composition significantly changed after the WWA. At all study sites, macrofauna functional diversity increased after the warm period. Functional trait composition changed significantly along the bathymetric transect. Despite changes in the taxonomic composition, macrofauna communities at the shallowest stations showed high functional redundancy, i.e., trait composition remained unchanged after the WWA. At water depths below 1500 m, where functional redundancy was significantly lower, functional trait composition changed significantly after the WWA. Our results suggest that macrofauna communities on the shelves are more resistant to environmental changes compared to deep-sea assemblages in the eastern Fram Strait.

Altered nitrogen transformation pathways and a legacy of sediment organic matter enrichment

Estuaries are ecologically valuable ecosystems that process nutrients through complex biogeochemical processes. Here we identify drivers and inhibitors of nitrogen removal in unvegetated intertidal sandflats at six sites in Manukau Harbour (37° 2.00′S 174° 42.00′E) to quantify the exchange of solutes across the sediment-water interface, with nitrogen removal rates (NRR) measured at two contrasting sites (PI and CB) near and far, respectively, from an historical wastewater treatment plant. Solute fluxes were paired with sediment and macrofauna community data to identify drivers of ecosystem function. Fluxes of oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorous were found to vary among sites, with differences attributed to variation in sediment characteristics (grain size, chlorophyll a, organic content) and macrofauna community structure. Mean NRR was found to vary between sites (PI = 32.2 vs CB = 217.9 μmol N2/m2/h), with bioturbating macrofauna (bivalves Austrovenus stutchburyi and Macomona liliana), microphytobenthic biomass, and exposure to nutrients likely key contributing drivers.

SOIL MACROFAUNA AND MESOFAUNA COMMUNITY ON AGRICULTURAL LAND IN PLIKEN VILLAGE, KEMBARAN DISTRICT, BANYUMAS REGENCY

Soil is a habitat for various types of fauna, especially macrofauna and soil mesofauna. In general, fertile soil can be found on land used for agricultural activities. The purpose of this study was to determine and reveal the community structure of soil macrofauna and mesofauna which includes individual count, diversity, and dominance as well as environmental quality on agricultural land in Pliken Village, Kembaran District, Banyumas Regency in 2021. The study was carried out in January-June 2021. by using survey method and purposive random sampling technique. Sampling of soil macrofauna and mesofauna was carried out in three locations, namely agricultural land in the west, north, and south of the village. Data sampling was carried out in the morning (07.00-09.00 am) and at night (19.00-21.00 am) 6 times with an interval of once a month. Soil macrofauna and meofuana that had been obtained were identified using the Taxonomy and Identification Key book. An Introduction to the Study of Insects and other references related to the identification of soil macrofauna During the study, 2717 soil macrofauna were found which belong to 15 Orders, 31 Families and 40 Species, while for soil mesofauna, 500 individuals were obtained which belong to 14 Orders, 18 Families. and 21 species.The highest individual count for soil macrofauna came from the Formicideae family (86.86%), while the highest individual count for soil mesofauna came from the Isotomideae family (27%). The index of soil macrofauna diversity on agricultural land in Pliken Village ranged from 0.997- 1,789 with an average of 1,287 which means the level of diversity is moderate, while the index Soil mesofauna diversity ranges from 1.13 to 2.15 with an average of 1.65 which means the level of diversity is moderate. Soil macrofauna dominance index is moderate with a range of 0.264 - 0.546 which indicates that there is still dominance by certain soil macrofauna, namely the Formicideae (ant) family, while the soil mesofauna dominance index ranges from 0.13 to 0.38 with an average of 0.23 which indicates the absence of a predominant species. The environmental quality of agricultural land in Pliken Village is categorized as good to support the life of macrofauna and soil mesofauna. Land-use intensification and climate change are main threats to the abundance and diversity of soil macrofauna. However, little is known about their biomass in response to these concurrent drivers. Here, we investigated the biomass responses of soil macrofauna along a land-use intensity gradient of five land-use regimes (i.e., from extensively-used grassland to conventional cropland) under two climate scenarios (ambient vs. future). We found that land-use intensification (but not climate change) significantly reduced soil macrofauna biomass at the community rather than individual level. Further, the community structure of soil macrofauna based on total biomass data varied with land-use type (i.e., grasslands vs. croplands). Collectively, our findings suggest that land-use intensification can negatively shift the community biomass patterns of soil macrofauna consistently under both ambient and future climates in agroecosystems.

Community Structure of Benthic Macrofauna and the Ecological Quality of Mangrove Wetlands in Hainan, China

Few studies have systematically assessed the ecological status of mangrove wetlands following the stress of anthropogenic activities in China. This study investigated the spatial and seasonal distribution of benthic macroinvertebrate communities and assessed the ecological quality of mangrove habitats on an island scale in Hainan, China (containing the third largest mangrove area of China and the highest mangrove species richness). For the benthic macrofauna community structure, a total of 102 macrobenthic taxa belonging to 50 families were identified, with Crustaceans, Molluscs, Polychaetes, and Oligochaeta having relative abundances of 52.3%, 36.1%, 10.8%, and 0.8%, respectively. Decapoda and Gastropoda dominated the benthic community abundance. Non-metric multidimensional scaling and an analysis of similarities revealed significantly different macroinvertebrate assemblages among the regions during the two seasons. The South mangroves had the lowest macrofauna species numbers, biodiversity, richness, and abundance. The macrofaunal species richness, Shannon index, Margalef index, abundance, and biomass markedly affected by region and season. As indicated by the biotic indices AMBI (AZTI’s Marine Biotic Index) and M-AMBI, more than half of the mangrove habitats on Hainan Island were slightly to heavily disturbed and had poor to moderate ecological quality. Our results recommend long-term monitoring for evaluating the quality status of mangrove wetlands and avoiding extensive land-use conversion of mangroves. Holistic approaches considering ecological characteristics and combining information on both floral and faunal functionality would contribute to the effective management and conservation of mangroves in disturbed areas.

Effects of topsoil transposition on the taxonomic and functional diversity of macrofauna of highly degraded soil

AbstractTopsoil transposition has been identified as an environmental restoration technique capable of accelerating regeneration in degraded areas. In addition to the seed bank, topsoil contains invertebrates and microorganisms essential in ecological succession. This study evaluated the temporal variation in the macrofauna community structure in an experiment with topsoil transposition. We hypothesized that the morphospecies richness, functional groups and macrofauna biomass would be higher in the plots with topsoil and native vegetation compared with plots with no topsoil. We further hypothesized that the composition of macrofauna community and the proportion of functional groups in the topsoil and the reference plots would become more similar over time. The community was compared between plots that received topsoil, plots that did not receive topsoil and plots in a natural vegetation, over 14 months. The macrofauna biomass and the diversity of functional groups were equivalent in the degraded area and the topsoil. The effect of treatment on richness depended on time, and it was possible to observe higher values of macrofauna richness in the topsoil compared with the degraded area in some months. The compositions of the macrofauna communities in the degraded area and the topsoil showed greater similarity to each other. In contrast, the reference area showed the greatest dissimilarity with the other treatments. In general, the macrofauna community in the topsoil remained more similar to the degraded area. However, in the topsoil plots, we found higher macrofauna richness during rainy months and an increase in predator biomass. In conclusion, the macrofauna community in the topsoil, which has changed over time, presented higher values of morphospecies richness in some months and the increase in predator biomass, indicating an increase in the complexity of the community. Besides, the topsoil can improve biodiversity, but this does not produce the natural communities found at reference sites, in a small‐time scale experiment.
