Effect of Structure of Aromatic Compounds on Luminescence of Composite of Zinc-Containing Metal–Organic Framework with Acridine Orange

It was shown that the composite formed by the polymeric metal–organic framework {[Zn(L)(DPDC)]}n (L = cyclam, DPDC2–= 4,4′-diphenyldicarboxylate) with acridine orange exhibits bimodal luminescence as a result of energy transfer from the coordination polymer to the dye. It was established that the ratio of intensities of the emission bands of the composite treated with the organic compound depends on the structure of the substrate, which opens up possibilities for the creation of selective luminescent sensors for determination of substances similar in chemical nature.

Overcharge protection effect and reaction mechanism of cyclohexylbenzene for lithium ion batteries

We studied the relationship between the structure of aromatic compounds and the overcharge protection effect, using cyclohexylbenzene, isopropylbenzene, and toluene as the overcharge protection agents. Cyclohexylbenzene proved to be the most effective overcharge protection agent among these aromatic compounds. The effect is enhanced using a higher concentration of cyclohexylbenzene and elevated temperatures. The reaction product of cyclohexylbenzene was analyzed using field desorption mass spectrometry to elucidate its reaction mechanism. The results suggested that some of the overcharge reaction products of CHB were more reactive than that of IPB, which is consistent with the better suppressing effect on overcharging of the active material in the positive electrode.

Chemotopic representations of aromatic odorants in the rat olfactory bulb

Our laboratory has characterized spatial patterns of evoked neural activity across the entire glomerular layer of the rat olfactory bulb using primarily aliphatic odorants that differ systematically in functional groups and hydrocarbon structures. To represent more fully the true range of odorant chemistry, we investigated aromatic compounds, which have a more rigid molecular structure than most aliphatic compounds and are particularly salient olfactory stimuli for humans. We first investigated glomerular patterns of 2-deoxyglucose uptake in response to aromatic compounds that differ in the nature and position of their functional groups (e.g., xylenes, trimethylbenzenes, tolualdehydes, benzaldehydes, methyl toluates, and anisaldehydes). We also studied the effects of systematic increases in the number and length of alkyl substituents. We found that most aromatic compounds activated glomeruli in the dorsal part of the bulb. Within this general area, aromatic odorants with oxygen-containing substituents favored activation of more rostral regions, and aromatic hydrocarbons activated more posterior regions. The nature of substituents greatly affected the pattern of glomerular activation, whereas isomers differing in substitution position evoked very similar overall patterns. These relationships between the structure of aromatic compounds and their spatial representation in the bulb are contrasted with our previous findings with aliphatic odorants.

Correlation between the structure of aromatic compounds and the rate of their biological degradation

Linear relations have been obtained between the logarithms of the biological degradation rate of phenol and aniline derivatives and the substituent constants σ accounting for their electronic effects. The reaction constant in the Hammett equation is negative; the biological degradation rate is negatively affected by electron-withdrawing substituents. Of the OH, CH3, Cl, NO2, and NH2 substituents tested, only amino group led to deviations from the linear correlations for monosubstituted phenols. The rate of degradation of the aromatic system seems to be controlled by electronic effects, the limiting stage being the electrophilic substitution; correlations using the steric or lipophilic constants failed.
