Frailty, Brain Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease Brain Signatures: Longitudinal Associations from Middle to Old Age

AbstractBackgroundFrailty—feelings of weakness, fatigue, and lack of physiological resiliency—places older adults at increased risk for Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and related dementias. A possible mechanism underlying these associations may be the effects of frailty on brain aging prior to old age.MethodA prospective observational study of approximately 502 community‐based men of predominantly European ancestry without dementia at baseline, from the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging (VETSA). Frailty index and MRI imaging were collected at three waves at average ages 56, 62, and 68. We created frailty index (FI) scores using 37 items from previously validated cumulative deficit model indices. Imaging measures included brain‐age (BA; Cole et al. 2018), as well as a validated thickness/hippocampal volume AD‐signature (CTS), and a novel gray matter mean diffusivity AD‐signature (MDS), both weighted averages of MRI‐based morphometry or diffusivity in eight AD‐related brain regions. Different longitudinal models were tested using structural equation modeling in Mplus. Models were adjusted for age, race/ethnicity, education, and smoking.ResultFI was highly correlated over time (range rs = 0.69 to 0.77), as were the brain signatures (range rs = 0.52 to 0.85). The best fitting model was the simplex/auto‐regressive model with correlated random intercepts. Figures 1‐3 show significant associations in the covariate‐adjusted models. FI is significantly associated with brain‐age and the cortical thickness/hippocampal volume AD‐signature random intercepts but not the mean diffusivity signature. Associations attenuate when smoking is added to the model. Moreover, when the cortical thickness/hippocampal volume and mean diffusivity AD‐signatures are adjusted for brain‐age then the associations further attenuate and are no longer significant. No cross‐lag associations were significant.ConclusionThe results are striking given the relatively young age of the sample. Across middle age, frailty was associated with worse brain age and a smaller cortical thickness/hippocampal volume AD‐signature. These associations do not appear to be causal, rather biological aging processes running in parallel. Combined with recent evidence showing associations between frailty and AD‐related biomarkers, the results suggest frailty is not just a geriatric disease and support the need for early intervention in biological aging.

The well-being correlates of religious commitment amongst South African and Kenyan students

Religious commitment is a prominent feature in the lives of many students in Africa. The present study investigated the well-being correlates (emotional well-being, social contribution, and depression) of religious commitment, and compared them across sex. A cross-sectional sample of 471 students from South Africa and Kenya (men = 244; women = 227; with an average age of 22.8 years) completed the Religious Commitment Inventory, Patient Health Questionnaire, Social Well-being Scale, and Mental Health Continuum Short-Form. Structural equation modelling in Mplus was used to estimate direct effects of religious commitment on emotional well-being, social contribution and depression, and comparison across sex. The results showed significant direct effects, attesting to the association of religious commitment with higher emotional well-being and social contribution, and lower depression, with no significant sex differences. In addition to insight into positive and negative intra- and interpersonal well-being correlates of religious commitment, the absence of sex differences shows uniformity in how religious commitment is related to well-being for male and female students.

Stairway to heaven or a placebo: the impact of lean leadership, through job demands, on hospital workers’ engagement and performance

PurposeThis study aims to examine to what extent the relationships between hospital workers’ perceptions of lean leadership behaviour, their engagement and the hospital unit’s perceived performance are mediated by job demands.Design/methodology/approachThe data (n = 1,624) come from a lean implementation study in a Dutch hospital and are analysed using structural equation modelling in Mplus (v8.4).FindingsThe results confirm that lean leadership behaviour is related to employee engagement and hospital unit performance as perceived by employees, and these relationships are partially mediated through job demands. More specifically, the authors found that the type of job demand explains the direction of mediation effects. On the one hand, so-called challenging demands positively mediate the relationships between lean leadership behaviour and its outcomes. Conversely, hindering demands negatively mediates the relationship between lean leadership behaviour and perceived unit performance.Practical implicationsThe authors recommend hospital organisations and human resources managers start by helping hospital leaders understand the underlying mechanisms that explain the effects of leadership on employees’ perceptions and, second, support their frontline leaders by providing training, coaching and feedback on how to influence job demands in a way that creates an optimal work environment for hospital employees.Originality/valueThe authors contribute to the literature by building upon insights from the job demands-resources model to explain the effects of lean leadership behaviour and by investigating the relevance of lean leadership in a hospital context, given the phenomenon’s strong roots in manufacturing.

The Health Implications of Perceived Anti-Muslim Discrimination Among South Asian Muslim Americans

Anti-Muslim discrimination in the U.S. has increased exponentially since 2001, but the impact of anti-Muslim discrimination has yet to be fully examined because of limited data available on this topic and population. The objectives of this study were to (1) examine the association between perceived anti-Muslim discrimination and health risk behaviors, with depressive symptoms as a potential mediator, among South Asian Muslim Americans and (2) examine the association between other forms of perceived discrimination and health risk behaviors, with depressive symptoms as a potential mediator, among South Asian Muslim Americans. Data were collected using an online survey, which was disseminated on subscriber e-mail lists for organizations that serve South Asian or Muslim communities. Participants were asked about perceived discrimination, depressive symptoms, diet, physical activity, tobacco use, and alcohol consumption. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling in Mplus 8. Societal anti-Muslim discrimination had a positive association with depressive symptoms (0.19, p<0.05), as did interpersonal anti-Muslim discrimination (0.20, p<0.05) and other forms of discrimination (0.22, p<0.05). None of the discrimination scales were associated with dietary patterns, tobacco use, or alcohol consumption. Study results demonstrated a link between discrimination and depressive symptoms. Further research is needed to examine associations with other adverse health outcomes and potential buffers against discrimination.

Maternal childhood adversity and adolescent marijuana use at age 17 years: The role of parental mental health and parenting behaviors.

Children's risk for marijuana use may be linked to their parents' history of childhood adversity, yet little is known about the mechanisms underlying this link. This study examined whether maternal parenting behavior and mental health serve as mechanisms linking maternal childhood adversity to their children's marijuana use at age 17 years, by gender. Data were from the Young Women and Child Development Study (59% male), a longitudinal panel study, which began in 1988 and followed mother-child dyads for 17 years (n = 240). Participants were recruited from health and social services agencies located in a metropolitan region of Washington State. Hypotheses were tested using Structural Equation Modeling in Mplus. Multiple-group analysis was conducted to evaluate potential gender differences. Results showed that maternal childhood adversity was associated with their mental health outcomes (β = .32, p < .001), which in turn was predictive of mothers' harsh parenting (β = .27, p < .01). Maternal harsh parenting behavior was then associated with their children's marijuana use at age 17 years (β = .34, p < .001). Multiple group analyses revealed that the path from harsh parenting to adolescent marijuana use differed across genders being only significant for boys (β = .42, p < .001). The intergenerational impact of childhood adversity highlights the need for interventions that target both parents and children. This would support teen mothers with a history of childhood adversity to acquire skills and knowledge to help mitigate its impact on their parenting behaviors and offset risks for their children.

Meaningful leadership and sustainable HRM: catalysts for follower calling – a moderated mediational model

PurposeThe aim of the study is to identify the ways of making work a calling for employees. Based on signaling theory, the authors present an integrated model to develop calling in employees by finding an indirect effect of meaningful leadership on calling through sustainable human resource management (SHRM) practices. Furthermore, the authors predict that meaningful work will moderate this mediating effect.Design/methodology/approachIn a three-wave time-lagged study, the authors followed 187 workers from multiple organizations across Pakistan to examine how meaningful leadership influences employee calling through SHRM practices in the form of signals. The authors established that this indirect effect is stronger when employees perceive their work as meaningful. The authors used structural equation modeling in MPlus to test a moderated mediational model.FindingsThe results show that meaningful leadership is positively related to calling through SHRM practices, and meaningful work significantly moderates this mediating relationship. Specifically, the indirect effect of meaningful leadership is stronger when meaningful work is high.Originality/valueThe study substantiates the high importance of meaningful leadership as a signaler and provides insight into the mechanism of meaningful work as a contingency to develop a calling. The uniqueness of the study lies in testing meaningful leadership empirically and identifying external antecedents of calling among employees.

The Significance of Religious Tolerance for University Students: Its Influence on Religious Beliefs and Happiness

This study investigates the relationship between religious belief, religious tolerance, and students’ happiness. It aims to explore the moderating effect of religious tolerance on the relationship between religious belief and students’ happiness. The study adopts a quantitative methodology, surveying 734 university students. The data is analyzed using Structural Equation Modelling in Mplus. The results indicate that religious belief influences students’ happiness. Additionally, religious belief influences religious tolerance and happiness positively. Religious tolerance also has a direct effect on happiness. The study highlights the moderating influence of religious tolerance on the association between religious belief and happiness. It also suggests that the level of religious tolerance can influence the effect of religious belief on happiness. In order to increase students' happiness while pursuing a bachelor's degree, the implications of these findings highlight the significance of universities considering and promoting religious tolerance among students.

Depression Mediates the Relationships between Hallucinations, Delusions, and Social Isolation in First-Episode Psychosis.

Social isolation is common among individuals with schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders. Research indicates that social isolation relates to poorer mental health outcomes, depression, and negative symptoms, with less known about its relationship with positive symptoms. This study examined depression as a mediator in the relationships between positive symptoms (i.e., hallucinations and delusions) and social isolation among an early treatment phase sample in the United States. Data were obtained from the Recovery After an Initial Schizophrenia Episode project of the National Institute of Mental Health's Early Treatment Program. Participants (N = 404) included adults between ages 15 and 40 in a first episode of psychosis. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling in Mplus (Version 8). The study showed that delusions (b = .095, SE = 0.04, p < .05) and hallucinations (b = .076, SE = 0.03, p < .01) were directly related to depression, and that both delusions (b = .129, SE = 0.06, p < .05) and depression (b = .254, SE = 0.09, p < .05) were directly related to social isolation. Findings of this study determined that depression functioned as a mediator in the relationships between positive symptoms and social isolation. Targeting psychosis symptomatology and depression in treatment, improving social skills and social support networks, and considering the role of stigma in social isolation are of great importance in the prevention of poorer mental health outcomes.

Brand love and brand addiction and their effects on consumers' negative behaviors

Purpose This study aims to investigate the relationship between brand love and brand addiction and their effects on consumers' negative behaviors with respect to excessive spending, trash-talking and the feeling of anxiety. Design/methodology/approach A sample of 352 young fashion brand consumers responded to a structured questionnaire. The resulting data were analyzed with structural equation modeling in MPlus. Findings While brand love and brand addiction are related concepts, their effects on negative consumer behaviors differ. In the presence of brand addiction as a mediator of brand love, brand addiction has a significant effect on the three negative behaviors, and the authors observe a suppression effect of brand love on the outcome variables, with total effects (direct and indirect) being insignificant. Research limitations/implications The main limitation of this study was its single-country cross-sectional convenience sample. Practical implications While brand addiction could aid brands by leading consumers to spend excessively on them and trash-talk rival brands, it may also lead to increased consumer anxiety. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to empirically assess the relationship between brand love and brand addiction and their effects on three distinctive negative consumer behaviors. This shows that brand love is an important antecedent of brand addiction.

Testing the Mindfulness-to-Meaning Theory in Daily Life

ObjectivesThe mindfulness-to-meaning theory (MMT) describes the processes through which mindfulness leads to enhanced eudaimonic wellbeing (indirectly via mediating processes such as increased decentering, reappraisal, positive affect, and savoring), but little is currently known about how these processes impact one another over short time periods (e.g., across several hours). The current study tested the MMT by measuring these variables repeatedly as they occur naturalistically in daily life.MethodsThree hundred and forty-five community members aged 18–65 completed surveys on smartphones six times per day over 7 days, assessing their current levels of decentering, reappraisal, positive affect, savoring, and wellbeing, as part of a larger study. Multilevel structural equation modeling in Mplus was used to analyze the nested data with mediation models.ResultsThere was a significant indirect effect through the proposed MMT pathway at the within-person level, with all variables measured concurrently. Lagged mediation examining prospective effects indicated that the full indirect MMT pathway was not significant in predicting later wellbeing, though some individual indirect pathways were significant prospectively. Follow-up analyses testing alternative temporal ordering suggested bidirectional effects of savoring and positive affect in explaining the mutual association between decentering and wellbeing.ConclusionsOverall, this study found support for hypothesized MMT processes in daily life and measured over short time periods, with evidence for bidirectional effects for some processes. However, reappraisal showed inconsistent effects, requiring further study and replication using ecological momentary assessment designs.

How and when Workplace Spirituality leads toward Employees’ Voice Behavior: A Gender Perspective

This research enhances our current understanding of the effects of workplace spirituality on voice behaviors of male and female employees i) by examining the multiple underlying mechanisms of psychological safety and psychological empowerment and ii) by comparing the diverse use of these mechanisms across gender. Particularly, we posit that the strength of the two mechanisms varies across male and female in such a way that the impact of spirituality on females’ voice behavior primarily flow via psychological safety and for male employees, this effect mainly flows via psychological empowerment. The analysis of our theoretical model relies on two independent studies. Study-1 (n=331 employees) tested our model in the manufacturing sector whereas study-2 (n=255 employees) replicated the results in the service (banking) sector. The aggregate results obtained from both studies by using structural equation modeling in MPlus revealed (with some variations) that spirituality, directly and indirectly, influences the voice behaviors of both male and female employees. However, the direct effect of spirituality on female voice behavior was stronger than the male employees. Moreover, the specific indirect effects obtained from moderated mediation analysis in Mplus demonstrate that the indirect effect of spirituality on female voice behavior mainly flows via psychological safety whereas on male voice behavior via psychological empowerment. The results are discussed in terms of their implication for theory and practice.

How social media's cause-related marketing activity enhances consumer citizenship behavior: the mediating role of community identification

PurposeLimited research has explored why and how cause-related marketing on social media influences consumers' responses. Drawing upon balance theory and consistency theory, this study aims to identify the mechanism of cause-related marketing on social media.Design/methodology/approachData were collected from a sample of 360 users of cause-related marketing campaigns on social media and analyzed using structural equation modeling in Mplus 8.0.FindingsThe three types of congruence – self-image congruence, brand-image congruence and value congruence – can serve as sub-dimensions of perceived fit between a consumer, brand and cause of a cause-related marketing campaign on social media. Importantly, these perceived fit sub-dimensions positively influence community identification and, therefore, influence consumer citizenship behaviors.Practical implicationsThe findings provide theoretical and practical contributions for a brand to undertake cause-related marketing on social media.Originality/valueThis study clarifies the myth of the perceived fit of cause-related marketing on social media and examines the perceived fit sub-dimensions’ mechanism of consumers' responses through community identification.

Examining how and when Facebook intensive use shapes users’ online pro-social behaviors

Despite growing research on the favorable outcomes of Facebook intensive use, there is little evidence about the role of Facebook intensive use in shaping users’ online pro-social behaviors. Building on the Uses and Gratification Theory, we propose a positive relationship between Facebook intensive use and users’ online pro-social behaviors. We also propose self-transcendence as a relevant mediator and online relationship commitment as an important boundary condition. Results based on time-lagged data from 467 (three waves, two months apart) students at a large public sector university and analyzed using structural equation modeling in Mplus (8.5) reveal a positive relationship between Facebook intensive use and online pro-social behaviors, both directly and indirectly, via self-transcendence. Moreover, online relationship commitment moderates the direct link between Facebook intensive use and self-transcendence and the indirect relationship between Facebook intensive use and online pro-social behavior. Practical implications can help promote the meaningful use of Facebook.

Preventing and Neutralizing the Escalation of Workplace Bullying: the Role of Conflict Management Climate

Workplace bullying is, by definition, a gradually escalating process, theorized to occur from psychosocial stressors when there is a lack of management intervention in escalating conflicts, and a lack of fair and robust conflict management procedures in the organization. Based on national probability survey data gathered in 2015–2016 from the official Norwegian employee-register, we investigated how a strong perceived climate for conflict management may buffer the escalation of workplace bullying over time. A total of 1197 respondents participated in the study at two measuring points. The average age at baseline was 45.20 years (SD = 9.98), and the sample consisted of 52.1% women and 47.9% men. Structural equation modelling in Mplus 7.4 was used to test the construct validity and the study’s hypothesis. As expected, the analyses showed that a strong conflict management climate buffered the escalation of workplace bullying. Exposure to bullying behaviour at T1 largely explained (47%) new and increased instances of bullying behaviour at T2, but only for those employees working in what they perceived as a weak conflict management climate. We conclude that a strong conflict management climate neutralizes the escalation and development of workplace bullying.

The Effects of Father’s Warm Parenting Behavior on Children’s Academic Achievement and School Adjustment During The Transition to Elementary School: The Mediating Role of Children’s Peer Play Behavior

Objectives: Children’s "Play" plays a central role in their development, and a father’s participation in raising children is as important as a mother's. This study examined the extent to which fathers’ parenting behavior with their preschool children influenced their academic achievement and school adjustment through children’s’ peer play behavior during the period of transition to elementary school.Methods: Using the Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC), the present study included data on a total of 1,526 children and their father from 2013 (Time 6) to 2015 (Time 8). The hypothesized model was analyzed using structural equation modeling in Mplus 7.31.Results: Findings indicated that warmth of father’s parenting behavior at age five positively influenced children’s peer play behavior at age six, increasing interaction and reducing disconnection. It also influenced children’s school adjustment at age seven. Results indicated that the effects of the role of father’s warm parenting behavior on children’s academic achievement and school adjustment were mediated through peer play behavior. These results suggest the importance of father’s warm parenting behavior and children’s peer play behavior for their academic achievement and school adjustment during the transition to elementary school.Conclusion: These findings support the proposition that fostering a father’s parental warmth and encouraging children’s peer play would be a fruitful avenue to promote academic achievement and school adjustment during the transition to elementary school. In other words, this study explains the continuity of development from infancy to early school age and verifies that fathers’ parental warmth and children’s peer play in infancy are not limited to infancy through a series of long-term developmental pathways. Therefore, to improve school adaptation that affects social and cognitive development after entering elementary school, measures should be presented to support children’s play, and to support fathers’ warm parenting behavior in the future.

Acculturation Stress, Satisfaction, and Frustration of Basic Psychological Needs and Mental Health of Chinese Migrant Children: Perspective from Basic Psychological Needs Theory.

Acculturation stress is prevalent among migrant populations. The current study examines whether acculturation stress influences migrant children’s mental health through the mediators of the satisfaction and frustration of basic psychological needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence. A sample of 484 migrant children is obtained in Kunming, China using a multi-stage cluster random sampling. Data are analyzed through structural equation modeling in Mplus 8.0. Results indicate that acculturation stress has a direct impact on children’s depression but no significant direct effect on children’s happiness. Acculturation stress also has indirect effects on depression and happiness via the mediators of need satisfaction and frustration. Acculturation stress is negatively associated with need satisfaction and positively associated with need frustration, which is further significantly predictive of children’s happiness and depression. Overall, this study validates the basic psychological needs theory in the context of China’s internal migration. Findings contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms that underlie the relationship between acculturation stress and psychological outcomes and provide practical implications for future interventions.

The Complex Interplay of Peer Victimisation, Self-Esteem and Internalising Symptoms in Adolescents: A Meta-Analysis and Longitudinal Study

Background: Seventeen percent of adolescents experience peer victimisation, and peer victimisation predicts increased internalising symptoms. Low self-esteem, which is associated with both greater peer victimisation and higher internalising problems, may help explain why victimised adolescents experience greater internalising symptoms.The first objective of the present research was to establish the relationships between peer victimisation, internalising problems, and self-esteem. The second objective was to test whether self-esteem explains (mediates) the effect of victimisation on internalising symptoms, as well as the complex interplay between victimisation, self-esteem, and internalising symptoms, in a large, longitudinal sample of adolescents from the Millenium Cohort Study. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search following PRISMA guidelines. Sixteen papers with a total of N = 34,745 (53% female) participants met the criteria for inclusion in the meta-analysis. To calculate overall effect sizes, we used a random effects model in Comprehensive Meta Analysis. We analysed the data from the Millenium Cohort Study (N = 10,866, 50.29% female) using structural equation modelling in MPlus. Findings: The meta-analysis demonstrated an association between peer victimisation and both high internalising problems and low self-esteem, and between low self-esteem and high internalising problems. The Millenium Cohort data largely confirmed these results within a developmental cascade model. Additonally, self-esteem mediated the effect of peer victimisation on internalising problems. Moreover, young people with emotional problems, low self-esteem, special educational needs (SEN) or female sex were at a higher risk to experience peer victimisation. Interpretation: The results suggest that anti-bullying interventions should be implemented early. A possible route would be for primary schools to better prepare pupils for the transition into secondary schools. Interventions may be particularly important for females and pupils with SEN status, particularly given the interplay between peer victimisation, self-esteem and emotional problems. Distinguishing Perceived Hope and Dispositional Optimism: Theoretical Foundations and Empirical Findings beyond Future Expectancies and Cognition

At first glance, hope and optimism appear to be two almost identical concepts. The predominant cognitive theories maintain that both are based on positive future expectancies regarding goal attainment. However, other approaches recommend distinguishing between hope and future expectancies and sustain that the differences between hope and optimism are of a more substantial nature. The present study investigates the distinction between a new short instrument to measure hope as perceived by the general public, and dispositional optimism as measured by the revised Life Orientation Test (LOT-R) in a South African sample. After comparing both instruments using confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory structural equation modelling in Mplus, a number of encouraging results emanated from the data. First, the Perceived Hope Scale (PHS) is a unitary and coherent measure of perceived hope. Second, perceived hope, as measured by the PHS, and optimism and pessimism as measured by the LOT-R, are psychometrically distinguished latent dimensions, optimally specified by their indicator variables. Furthermore, perceived hope represents a fundamental construct in the prediction of health outcomes and well-being and is an important antecedent to optimism and dispositional hope. Perceived hope is thus an important additional facet to consider in investigating well-being.

0551 Longitudinal Measurement Invariance of the Insomnia Severity Index in Veterans with Sleep Apnea

Abstract Introduction The Insomnia Severity Index is a commonly used instrument to assess the presence of insomnia symptoms as well as an outcome measure following an intervention. Longitudinal measurement invariance is a necessary property of an assessment instrument when it is repeated over time. The validity of conclusions regarding change in the construct ‘insomnia severity’ depend on scale equivalence at each measurement timepoint. Assessment of measurement invariance of the ISI in sleep apnea patients has never been performed. Methods Veterans with sleep apnea (n=654; AHI=36±28; 93% male; age=52±12; BMI=33±6) completed the ISI on the night of their overnight PSG and again when they picked up their PAP device. Invariance was determined by imposing a series of more restrictive equivalence constraints on a 2-factor model of the ISI. The series of constraints tested for configural, weak, strong and strict invariance. Invariance testing was modeled with exploratory structural equation modeling in Mplus (v. 7.0). Results The 2-factor model that emerged from the analysis showed items relating to nighttime symptoms loading on factor 1 and daytime symptoms loading on factor 2. The sleep ‘satisfaction’ item, however, had weak but similar loadings on both factors. The increasingly restrictive constraints imposed on the model revealed no decrement in model fit (RMSEA=.039 to.043; CFI=.987 to .980; TLI=.981-.977; SRMR=.027-.041). Conclusion The ISI met strict criteria for longitudinal measurement invariance demonstrating that it is a valid instrument to be used in repeated measures study designs of insomnia in sleep apnea patients. Change over time on the ISI is not due to the changing measurement characteristics of the ISI but to true changes in the ‘insomnia severity’ construct. Support None

How control and commitment HR practices influence employee job crafting

PurposeBased on the socioemotional selectivity theory, this study aims to explore the differential influences of control and commitment human resource (HR) practices on employee job crafting as well as the mediating role of occupational future time perspective (OFTP).Design/methodology/approachThis study used a two-wave design to survey 53 HR managers and 339 employees of 53 Chinese firms. The hypotheses were tested by conducting multilevel structural equation modeling in Mplus 7.4.FindingsThe results show that control HR practices are negatively related to job crafting, while commitment HR practices are positively related to job crafting. Further, control HR practices are negatively associated with the remaining opportunities dimension of OFTP, whereas commitment HR practices are positively associated with remaining opportunities. However, both types of HR practices have no significant relationship with the remaining time dimension of OFTP.
