Event-Related Potential Markers of Suicidality in Adolescents.

Implicit cognitive markers may assist with the prediction of suicidality beyond clinical risk factors. The aim of this study was to investigate neural correlates associated with the Death/Suicide Implicit Association Test (DS-IAT) via event-related potentials (ERP) in suicidal adolescents. Thirty inpatient adolescents with suicidal ideations and behaviors (SIBS) and 30 healthy controls from the community were recruited. All participants underwent 64-channel electroencephalography, DS-IAT, and clinical assessments. Hierarchical generalized linear models with spatiotemporal clustering were used to identify significant ERPs associated with the behavioral outcome of DS-IAT (D scores) and group differences. Behavioral results (D scores) showed that the adolescents with SIBS had stronger implicit associations between "death" and "self" than the healthy group (P = .02). Within adolescents with SIBS, participants with stronger implicit associations between "death" and "self" reported more difficulty in controllability of suicidal ideation in the past 2 weeks based on the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (P = .03). For the ERP data, the D scores and N100 component over the left parieto-occipital cortex had significant correlations. Significant group differences without behavioral correlation were observed for a second N100 cluster (P = .01), P200 (P = .02), and late positive potential (5 clusters, all P ≤ .02). Exploratory predictive models combining both neurophysiological and clinical measures distinguished adolescents with SIBS from healthy adolescents. Our results suggest that N100 may be a marker of attentional resources involved in the distinction of stimuli that are congruent or incongruent to associations between death and self. Combined clinical and ERP measures may have utility in future refinements of assessment and treatment approaches for adolescents with suicidality.

Implicit self-criminal cognition and its relation to criminal behavior.

Three studies adopted implicit social cognition theory and methodology to understand criminal cognition outside of conscious awareness or control, specifically by testing whether individual differences in implicit associations between the self and the group criminals are related to criminal behavior. A Single Category Implicit Association Test measured self-criminal associations across 3 adult samples-2 from Newark, New Jersey, a high-crime United States city, and an adult national sample from the United States. Then, all participants reported their criminal behavior in 2 cross-sectional design studies and 1 longitudinal design study. Consistent with an additive model of implicit and explicit cognition, studies generally demonstrated that strong implicit self-criminal associations increased the odds of committing a criminal act, even after accounting for explicit self-criminal cognition, past criminal behavior, and/or criminal-related demographics. This research suggests that implicit self-criminal associations serve as a cognitive marker for criminal behavior. Furthermore, the present research calls into question criminal justice policies and practices that assume that criminal behavior is exclusively driven by criminal intent. Implicit Cognitions as a Behavioral Marker of Suicide Attempts in Adolescents

Using self-harm Implicit Association Tests (IATs), we sought to test whether (1) suicidal adolescents show implicit identification with self-harm and whether (2) IATs are reliable and sensitive to psychiatric change and (3) predict future suicide attempts. We administered 6 self-harm IATs to 71 adolescents from a psychiatric inpatient unit and assessed suicidal behaviors at admission, discharge and 3 months after discharge. Results were in the expected direction for each IAT but not statistically significant. After aggregating trials across IATs, suicide attempters showed increased implicit identification with self-harm, compared with non-suicidal controls. IATs showed good reliability and sensitivity to psychiatric change but did not prospectively predict suicide attempts. Adolescent suicide attempters may have stronger implicit associations with self-harm than non-suicidal controls.

Implicit and Explicit Associations with Erotic Stimuli in Women with and Without Sexual Problems

Conceptual models of sexual functioning have suggested a major role for implicit cognitive processing in sexual functioning. The present study aimed to investigate implicit and explicit cognition in sexual functioning in women. Gynecological patients with (N = 38) and without self-reported sexual problems (N = 41) were compared. Participants performed two Single-Target Implicit Association Tests (ST-IAT), measuring the implicit association of visual erotic stimuli with attributes representing, respectively, valence and motivation. Participants also rated the erotic pictures that were shown in the ST-IATs on the dimensions of valence, attractiveness, and sexual excitement, to assess their explicit associations with these erotic stimuli. Participants completed the Female Sexual Functioning Index and the Female Sexual Distress Scale for continuous measures of sexual functioning, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale to assess depressive symptoms. Compared to nonsymptomatic women, women with sexual problems were found to show more negative implicit associations of erotic stimuli with wanting (implicit sexual motivation). Across both groups, stronger implicit associations of erotic stimuli with wanting predicted higher level of sexual functioning. More positive explicit ratings of erotic stimuli predicted lower level of sexual distress across both groups.

Measuring the bias against low-income country research: an Implicit Association Test

BackgroundWith an increasing array of innovations and research emerging from low-income countries there is a growing recognition that even high-income countries could learn from these contexts. It is well known that the source of a product influences perception of that product, but little research has examined whether this applies also in evidence-based medicine and decision-making. In order to examine likely barriers to learning from low-income countries, this study uses established methods in cognitive psychology to explore whether healthcare professionals and researchers implicitly associate good research with rich countries more so than with poor countries.MethodsComputer-based Implicit Association Test (IAT) distributed to healthcare professionals and researchers. Stimuli representing Rich Countries were chosen from OECD members in the top ten (>$36,000 per capita) World Bank rankings and Poor Countries were chosen from the bottom thirty (<$1000 per capita) countries by GDP per capita, in both cases giving attention to regional representation. Stimuli representing Research were descriptors of the motivation (objective/biased), value (useful/worthless), clarity (precise/vague), process (transparent/dishonest), and trustworthiness (credible/unreliable) of research. IAT results are presented as a Cohen’s d statistic. Quantile regression was used to assess the contribution of covariates (e.g. age, sex, country of origin) to different values of IAT responses that correspond to different levels of implicit bias. Poisson regression was used to model dichotomized responses to the explicit bias item.ResultsThree hundred twenty one tests were completed in a four-week period between March and April 2015. The mean Implicit Association Test result (a standardized mean relative latency between congruent and non-congruent categories) for the sample was 0.57 (95% CI 0.52 to 0.61) indicating that on average our sample exhibited moderately strong implicit associations between Rich Countries and Good Research. People over 40 years of age were less likely to exhibit pro-poor implicit associations, and being a peer reviewer contributes to a more pro-poor association.ConclusionsThe majority of our participants associate Good Research with Rich Countries, compared to Poor Countries. Implicit associations such as these might disfavor research from poor countries in research evaluation, evidence-based medicine and diffusion of innovations.

Implicit Associations with Death: First Validation of the German Version of the Suicide Implicit Association Test (Suicide IAT)

Nock, Park, Finn, et al. 1 developed an implicit association test for suicide (suicide IAT) measuring the implicit association between 'death' and 'self'. They demonstrated that psychiatric patients, who already attempted suicide, showed stronger implicit associations with 'death' than with 'life' compared to patients without suicide attempt history. The present study had 2 aims: (1) to present a new German version of the suicide IAT and provide its first validation and (2) to investigate how implicit associations (suicide IAT) relate to suicidal ideation and behaviour, well-known risk factors such as depressiveness and hopelessness, and central concepts of the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide 2, Thwarted Belongingness and Perceived Burdensomeness. The sample consisted of 16 patients with a current Major Depression and suicidal ideation as well as 16 non-depressive, non-suicidal controls. Patients showed stronger associations between 'death' and 'self' than controls. We further found positive correlations between implicit associations with death and explicitly self-reported suicidal behaviour - controlled for depressiveness, hopelessness, and suicidal ideation. Our results confirm the validity of the German version of the suicide IAT and are discussed in the light of the Interpersonal Theory of Suicidal Behaviour 2 and recent suicide research.

Semantic processes leading to true and false memory formation in schizophrenia

Encoding semantic relationships between items on word lists (semantic processing) enhances true memories, but also increases memory distortions. Episodic memory impairments in schizophrenia (SZ) are strongly driven by failures to process semantic relations, but the exact nature of these relational semantic processing deficits is not well understood. Here, we used a false memory paradigm to investigate the impact of implicit and explicit semantic processing manipulations on episodic memory in SZ. Thirty SZ and 30 demographically matched healthy controls (HC) studied Deese/Roediger–McDermott (DRM) lists of semantically associated words. Half of the lists had strong implicit semantic associations and the remainder had low strength associations. Similarly, half of the lists were presented under “standard” instructions and the other half under explicit “relational processing” instructions. After study, participants performed recall and old/new recognition tests composed of targets, critical lures, and unrelated lures. HC exhibited higher true memories and better discriminability between true and false memory compared to SZ. High, versus low, associative strength increased false memory rates in both groups. However, explicit “relational processing” instructions positively improved true memory rates only in HC. Finally, true and false memory rates were associated with severity of disorganized and negative symptoms in SZ. These results suggest that reduced processing of semantic relationships during encoding in SZ may stem from an inability to implement explicit relational processing strategies rather than a fundamental deficit in the implicit activation and retrieval of word meanings from patients' semantic lexicon.

Cross-cultural evidence that the nonverbal expression of pride is an automatic status signal.

To test whether the pride expression is an implicit, reliably developing signal of high social status in humans, the authors conducted a series of experiments that measured implicit and explicit cognitive associations between pride displays and high-status concepts in two culturally disparate populations--North American undergraduates and Fijian villagers living in a traditional, small-scale society. In both groups, pride displays produced strong implicit associations with high status, despite Fijian social norms discouraging overt displays of pride. Also in both groups, implicit and explicit associations between emotion expressions and status were dissociated; despite the cross-cultural implicit association between pride displays and high status, happy displays were, cross-culturally, the more powerful status indicator at an explicit level, and among Fijians, happy and pride displays were equally strongly implicitly associated with status. Finally, a cultural difference emerged: Fijians viewed happy displays as more deserving of high status than did North Americans, both implicitly and explicitly. Together, these findings suggest that the display and recognition of pride may be part of a suite of adaptations for negotiating status relationships, but that the high-status message of pride is largely communicated through implicit cognitive processes.

Implicit cognition as a moderator of brief motivational interventions for alcohol

Hazardous alcohol use is a function of implicit cognition, i.e., nonconscious influences on appetitive behavior stemming from memory associations that are automatically activated upon exposure to alcohol cues. Implicit cognition is typically not addressed by alcohol brief intervention (BI), which targets explicit or conscious processes underlying alcohol restraint (e.g., readiness-to-change). The potential role of implicit cognition in BI outcomes has not been well-studied. Eighty-nine hazardous drinking college students (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test [AUDIT] score > 8) participated in a general health study for course credit. Students were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: assessment only or a 10-15 minute motivational intervention. Students completed measures of alcohol use and readiness-to-change at baseline and at 6-week follow-up. In addition, they completed an alcohol-specific implicit association test (a response-time measure of alcohol approach). The motivational intervention resulted in a significant increase in readiness-to-change immediately following the intervention. However, the effect of the intervention on change in quantity of alcohol use per drinking occasion at follow-up was significantly moderated by implicit cognition. Simple slopes analyses showed that those with low implicit appetitive responses showed significantly less drinking when exposed to the intervention condition, while those with high implicit cognition did not. Similarly, readiness-to-change scores predicted declines in drinking for those low in implicit cognition but not for those who showed high levels of implicit cognition. These results suggest that the effect of brief motivational intervention may be less effective among those with strong implicit alcohol-approach associations, and that implicit cognition may be important to address in subsequent BI development.

Cognitive Vulnerability in Moderate, Mild, and Low Seasonality

This study examined the association between cognitive vulnerability factors and seasonality. Students (N = 88), classified based on the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire as experiencing moderate (n = 26) or mild (n = 32) seasonality, and nondepressed, low-seasonality controls (n = 30) completed explicit (i.e., dysfunctional attitudes, automatic negative thoughts, seasonal attitudes, and rumination) and implicit (i.e., implicit associations test) measures of cognitive vulnerability at one winter and one nonwinter assessment. Relative to low- and mild-seasonality participants, moderate-seasonality participants endorsed more automatic thoughts and rumination in winter and more dysfunctional attitudes across both seasons. Moderate- and mild-seasonality participants endorsed more maladaptive seasonal attitudes than did low-seasonality participants. All groups demonstrated increased dysfunctional attitudes, automatic thoughts, and rumination and stronger implicit associations about light and dark during the winter. The findings support a possible cognitive mechanism of winter depression onset and/or maintenance unique to individuals with moderate, as opposed to mild, seasonality.

Exploring the relationship between implicit self-representation and drug use

Sociological theory stresses the link between drug use and identity and the need to reconstitute this identity as separate from drug use for successful recovery. Research in implicit social cognition suggests that people's attitudes need not be available to conscious awareness to have an influence on behaviour. Combining these two ideas, this exploratory study aimed to assess the association between an individual's implicit self-representation and their drug of choice on the assumption that this relationship may be pivotal in understanding drug use, drug dependency and ultimately recovery from drug use. This study assessed the implicit associations between self and heroin among 30 heroin users in residential rehabilitation and compared these to implicit associations of self with heroin of 41 people attending the same residential rehabilitation facility, but for their alcohol use. Participants were also administered the Severity of Dependence Scale to assess whether implicit associations between self and heroin use are stronger among people who are more heavily dependent on drugs. Results show that people in treatment for heroin use had stronger implicit associations between the self and heroin than people who were in treatment for alcohol use. Greater severity of heroin use was also associated with stronger implicit associations between the self and heroin. These findings demonstrate a link between heroin and implicit self-representations and may aid our understanding of drug dependency, severity of use and recovery from drug use while also helping to predict differential treatment success.

Depressive implicit associations and adults' reports of childhood abuse

Theory and research suggest that negative events in childhood (e.g., childhood abuse) may contribute to the development of a cognitive vulnerability to depression. A limitation of past research, however, is that the majority has focused on explicit cognitions (e.g., attributional style) and it remains unclear whether similar relations would be observed for more implicit measures of depressive cognitions. This study investigated the relation between young adults' reports of childhood abuse and their implicit depressive cognitions, as measured by the Implicit Association Test. As hypothesised, young adults reporting a history of childhood abuse exhibited stronger implicit associations for depression-relevant stimuli than did individuals with no abuse history. These results were maintained even after statistically controlling for the influence of current depressive symptom levels.

Implicit and explicit affective associations towards cannabis use in patients with recent-onset schizophrenia and healthy controls

Cannabis use is common in patients with recent-onset schizophrenia and this is associated with poor disease outcome. More insight in the cognitive-motivational processes related to cannabis use in schizophrenia may inform treatment strategies. The present study is the first known to compare implicit and explicit cannabis associations in individuals with and without psychotic disorder. Participants consisted of 70 patients with recent-onset psychotic disorder and 61 healthy controls with various levels of cannabis use. Three Single-Category Implicit Association Tests (SC-IAT) were used to assess 'relaxed', 'active' and 'negative' implicit associations towards cannabis use. Explicit expectancies of cannabis use were assessed with a questionnaire using the same words as the SC-IAT. There were no differences in implicit associations between patients and controls; however, patients scored significantly higher on explicit negative affect expectancies than controls. Both groups demonstrated strong negative implicit associations towards cannabis use. Explicit relaxed expectancies were the strongest predictors of cannabis use and craving. There was a trend for implicit active associations to predict craving. The findings indicate that patients suffering from schizophrenia have associations towards cannabis similar to controls, but they have stronger negative explicit cannabis associations. The strong negative implicit associations towards cannabis could imply that users of cannabis engage in a behaviour they do not implicitly like. Explicit relaxing expectancies of cannabis might be an important mediator in the continuation of cannabis use in patients and controls.

Response Inhibition Moderates the Relationship Between Implicit Associations and Drinking Behavior

Contemporary dual-process models of alcohol abuse propose that alcohol abuse develops because of dysfunctions in the impulsive system, which generates automatic impulses to drink alcohol, and disruptions in the reflective system, which becomes unable to inhibit the influence of these automatic impulses. Based on these insights, this study investigated whether individual differences in the ability of the reflective system to exert response inhibition moderate the relationship between automatic cognitive processes and drinking behavior. Specifically, it was examined whether the interaction between implicit alcohol-related associations and response inhibition predicted drinking behavior. Seventy-one university students completed the study online via the Internet. Implicit alcohol associations with positive affect and with arousal were assessed with variants of the Implicit Association Test. Response inhibition was measured using the original Stroop task. Participants also reported their weekly alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. As predicted, implicit associations were unrelated to drinking behavior when response inhibition was high. In contrast, when response inhibition was low, stronger implicit associations between alcohol and positive affect predicted increased alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. These findings indicate that the relationship between automatic cognitive processes, originating in the impulsive system, and drinking behavior depends on individual differences in response inhibition exerted by the reflective system. As prolonged alcohol abuse is known to impair response inhibition, alcohol abusers may benefit from interventions that increase response inhibition, thereby restoring inhibitory control over automatic impulses.

Cognitive-motivational determinants of fat food consumption in overweight and obese youngsters: The implicit association between fat food and arousal

Cognitive-motivational accounts of fat food intake propose an association between fat food and action dispositions, which are according to the biphasic emotion theory of Lang [(1995). Hillsdale, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc.] characterized by high levels of arousal. In two experiments, this association was investigated in lean and overweight youngsters. In the first experiment, 29 overweight and 29 lean youngsters conducted two Implicit Association Tasks (IAT; Greenwald, A.G., McGhee, D.E., & Schwartz, J.L. (1998). Measuring individual differences in implicit cognition: The implicit association test. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 74, 1464–1480.). In a positive arousal IAT, implicit associations between fat vs. lean food, and high and low arousal words with a positive valence were assessed. In a negative arousal IAT, high and low arousal words with a negative valence were used. A second experiment was conducted to replicate Experiment 1 in 29 youngsters with severe obesity and 29 lean peers. The results revealed strong implicit associations between fat food and arousal in both the overweight and the control group. No differences were found between the groups, nor between the positive and the negative arousal task. These results are related to cognitive-motivational theories of fat food intake.

Vulnerability associations and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in soldiers deployed to Iraq

The purpose of this prospective study was to examine whether explicit and implicit vulnerability associations before and after trauma exposure predict the onset and persistence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. The implicit association test (IAT) was modified to assess associations of self with vulnerability related cues. Dutch soldiers completed the IAT 6 weeks before being deployed to Iraq, and again 5 months upon return home. They also rated an explicit vulnerability scale. PTSD symptoms were assessed 5 and 15 months after deployment with a clinical interview and questionnaire. The results showed that (1) the pre-deployment vulnerability measures did not predict PTSD symptoms at 5 months, (2) both explicit and implicit post-deployment vulnerability measures explained unique variance in concurrent PTSD symptoms, over and above pre-existing neuroticism, and (3) only the explicit post-deployment vulnerability measure predicted unique variance in later PTSD symptoms (at 15 months), after controlling for earlier symptoms. This was no longer the case after controlling for neuroticism. The results suggest that strong implicit associations between the self and vulnerability are a consequence rather than a cause of PTSD symptoms.

Implicit associations between anxiety-related symptoms and catastrophic consequences in high anxiety sensitive individuals

Anxiety sensitivity refers to the fear of anxiety-related physical sensations arising from beliefs that these sensations have harmful consequences (Reiss & McNally, 1985). The present study examined whether individuals with high (vs. low) anxiety sensitivity show stronger implicit associations in memory between anxiety-related symptoms, as opposed to neutral body parts, and harmful, as compared to harmless, consequences. A total of 22 undergraduate students (14 F, 8 M) completed the Extrinsic Affective Simon Task (EAST; De Houwer, 2003). Results indicated that high anxiety sensitive individuals (n = 10) tended to implicitly associate harmful consequences with anxiety-related symptoms. Their performance was significantly faster on trials where target words related to anxiety symptoms were mapped on to the same response key as harmful consequences. No significant difference in performance was found for low anxiety sensitive individuals (n = 12) or when target words were body parts unlikely related to diseases. Between-group differences persisted after controlling for trait anxiety and history of panic attacks, but not when illness-related beliefs were introduced as a covariate. Identifying this implicit association bias provides additional empirical support for the concept of anxiety sensitivity.

Implicit alcohol-related cognitions in a clinical sample of heavy drinkers

Patients undergoing treatment in an alcohol-rehabilitation clinic performed an Extrinsic Affective Simon Task (EAST) and two Implicit Association Tests (IATs) that were designed to measure implicit attitudes toward alcohol or implicit alcohol-arousal associations. The EAST and IAT data indicated that patients had a more negative implicit attitude toward alcohol than toward softdrinks and possessed strong implicit alcohol-arousal associations. Our results replicate and extend those of Wiers et al. (J. Abnormal Psychol 111 (2002) 648).

Evaluating explicit and implicit death attitudes in funeral and university students

The present paper describes two studies assessing the relation of implicit death attitudes as measured by the Implicit Association Test (IAT) to explicit death attitudes as measured by questionnaires. In Study 1, 45 university students and 51 funeral service students completed the revised Death Anxiety Scale (DAS-R) and completed paper and pencil versions of the IAT measuring how much they implicitly associated death with bad vs. good (death valence), with anxious vs. calm (death anxiety), and with others vs. self (death denial). Both groups showed stronger implicit associations of death with anxious rather than calm and bad rather than good. Higher explicit death anxiety was associated with more implicit denial of death. Compared to university students, funeral students scored lower on the DAS-R and the IAT measure of implicit denial of death. In Study 2, 103 university students completed the DAS-R, completed Palm Pilot versions of the IAT measuring death valence, death anxiety, and death denial, and responded to questions about mortality-related decisions. Greater self-reported death anxiety was associated with less approval of physician-assisted suicide, whereas greater implicit denial of death was associated with less interest in having a living will and pre-arranging one's funeral.

Implicit and explicit alcohol-related cognitions in heavy and light drinkers.

Implicit and explicit alcohol-related cognitions were measured in 2 dimensions: positive-negative (valence) and arousal-sedation, with 2 versions of the Implicit Association Test (IAT; A. G. Greenwald, D. E. McGhee, & J. L. Schwartz) and related explicit measures. Heavy drinkers (n = 24) strongly associated alcohol with arousal on the arousal IAT (especially men) and scored higher on explicit arousal expectancies than light drinkers (n = 24). On the valence IAT, both light and heavy drinkers showed strong negative implicit associations with alcohol that contrasted with their positive explicit judgments (heavy drinkers were more positive). Implicit and explicit cognitions uniquely contributed to the prediction of 1-month prospective drinking. Heavy drinkers' implicit arousal associations could reflect the sensitized psychomotor-activating response to drug cues, a motivational mechanism hypothesized to underlie the etiology of addictive behaviors.
