In situ construction of layered transition metal phosphides/sulfides heterostructures for efficient hydrogen evolution in acidic and alkaline media

Construction of electrocatalysts with exceptional intrinsic activity and rich active sites has proved to be an effective strategy for remarkably enhancing the activity of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, durable and highly efficient layered Re2P/ReS2 (RePS) heterostructures were successfully fabricated by an in-situ phosphating layered ReS2. Taking advantage of the unique layered structure can provide abundant reaction active sites and the strong electronic interaction between ReS2 and Re2P can enhance the intrinsic activity, the optimized RePS electrocatalysts show superior catalytic activities of 69 and 57 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for HER in alkaline and acidic media, respectively. The density functional theory results suggest that the formed heterostructures between ReS2 and Re2P play an important role in optimizing the catalytic kinetics of the electrocatalysts. This work not only demonstrates that modulation of the electronic structure of catalysts is an efficient way to improve the HER activity but also confirms that the layered RePS heterostructure is a promising candidate for robust and high performance HER catalysts.

Hierarchical multiphase heterointerfaces Ni2P–CoP/MoO2 catalyst for efficient and stable hydrogen evolution reaction over the entire pH range

The development of pH-versatile, high-performing, and durable catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial to satisfy the complex environment of water electrolysis industry. Herein, we present the synthesis of a hierarchical multiphase heterointerfaces Ni2P–CoP/MoO2 nanocatalyst with exceptionally high HER activity in the entire pH range through a facile three-step process involved hydrothermal, electrodeposition, and in situ phosphating treatment. Experiments and characterization revealed the strong electronic interactions among the phases of Ni2P, CoP, and MoO2, which endowed the Ni2P–CoP/MoO2 with high hydrogen evolution activity in different pH ranges. Meanwhile, the layered structure of our as-prepared catalyst makes the massive exposure of active sites. As a result, the Ni2P–CoP/MoO2 catalyst shows remarkable performance, requiring mere overpotentials of 33, 41, and 23 mV to drive 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH, 1 M phosphate buffer solution, 0.5 M H2SO4, respectively. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits excellent stability in the chronopotentialmetry test under different pH electrolyte. Impressively, the Ni2P–CoP/MoO2 catalyst coupled with Ni–Fe LDH to form an overall water splitting system only require 1.50 V to drive 10 mA cm−2. Furthermore, this system actuated by wind and solar energy can stably undergo a continuous production of hydrogen and oxygen.

Interface engineering of MoS2–CoS2 heteronanosheets for enhanced electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction

The heterostructured electrocatalysts with tunable electronic interaction and distinct synergetic effects have been confirmed as an efficient strategy for realizing high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a simple synthetic strategy is reported for the growth of MoS2–CoS2 nanosheets on highly conductive reduced graphene oxide (MoS2–CoS2/RGO) to innovatively construct an electron-reconfiguration heterointerface. The strong electronic interactions between MoS2 and CoS2 interfaces lead to the redistribution of charge, which optimizes the adsorption-desorption of intermediates. Thus, the MoS2–CoS2/RGO exhibits superior catalytic activity toward HER with small overpotentials of 67 mV (1.0 M KOH) and 95 mV (0.5 M H2SO4), and remarkable stability. In addition, theoretical calculations reveal the redistribution of charge at the heterointerfaces, which decreases the energy barrier of adsorption for H intermediates and simultaneously enhances the kinetic of water dissociation. This work provides a simple strategy for designing heterostructured bimetallic electrocatalysts with a highly active interface.

Low-coordinated Fe–N3 sites in carbon nitride for efficient photo-Fenton wastewater treatment

Single-atom coordinated host catalyst offers a promising strategy for photo-Fenton induced wastewater treatment due to the tunable photophysical/chemical properties. However, designing efficient atomically dispersed single-atom catalysts with highly reactive unsaturated coordination remains a challenge. Herein, we designed the low-coordinated Fe–N3 site in carbon nitride (FeCN), which showed excellent degradation efficiency for 4-CP declined to 90.1 % in Tap water and 88.2 % in Dalian Lake within 1h. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) demonstrated the monoatomic Fe was anchored to CN via the low-coordinated Fe–N3 structure. Density Functional Theory (DFT) and photoelectric characterizations demonstrated that the Fe–N3 site could facilitate the photo-generated charge migration to the Fe–N3 site due to the asymmetric electron distribution of Fe–N3 site and the Fe_d orbitals occupying the conduction band positions. Besides, project density of states (PDOS) illustrated the strong electronic interaction between the Fe–N3 site and OH*, which confirmed the Fe–N3 site facilitated the activation of H2O2 and further accelerated the performance of photo-Fenton wastewater treatment. This study can provide insights into the design of highly active low-coordination single-atom catalysts and the Fenton-like mechanisms.

Iridium Cluster Anchored onto Cubic Molybdenum Carbide with Strong Electronic Interactions for Robust Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction in Alkaline Medium

AbstractConstructing atomic‐scale dispersed noble metal electrocatalysts holds enormous potential toward alkaline hydrogen oxidation reactions (HOR) owing to the high intrinsic activity and atom utilization. Here, this work shows that Ir clusters anchored on different types of molybdenum carbides (Ir/α‐MoC1‐x, Ir/β‐Mo2C) with tunable electronic interactions display distinct performance in alkaline HOR. Notably, the mass activity of Ir/α‐MoC1‐x with stronger electronic interaction is roughly twice that of Ir/β‐Mo2C. Moreover, the Ir/α‐MoC1‐x has reached an impressive mass‐normalized exchange current density (j0, mass) of 320 mA mg−1metal, making the HOR properties are comparable to those recently reported excellent alkaline HOR Ir‐based electrocatalysts. Both experimental and theoretical calculations have confirmed that the strong metal‐substrate interaction of Ir/α‐MoC1‐x via interfacial Ir‐Mo bonding, leading to a significantly modulated electronic structure and optimized binding energy of H* and OH*, thereby promoting the reaction kinetics of alkaline HOR. This work highlights strong metal‐support interactions can be an effective scheme for regulating the local electronic configuration and adsorption behavior of the catalyst along with an improved intrinsic catalytic activity.

Local microenvironment modulation of Pt0/Pt2+ nano-clusters inducing synchronous mass transfer effect to boost catalytic ozonation

Rational catalyst structure design is expected to solve the low O3 utilization and poor molecular mass transfer efficiency in heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO). Herein, Pt/CMK-3 catalyst with confined space to enhance mass transfer was synthesized and employed for CH3SH removal. Unlike fully free diffusion in 0–2.0 wt% Pt/CMK-3 and bulk phase diffusion in 10.0 wt% Pt/CMK-3, removal efficiency of 5.0 wt% Pt/CMK-3 was significantly improved to 97.0%, which was attributed to the effective interfacial diffusion of O3 and CH3SH through local microenvironment modulation of Pt0/Pt2+ nanoclusters (NCs) inducing synchronous mass transfer. Experimental and DFT calculations confirmed the strong electronic interactions between O3 and Pt0 facilitated charge redistribution and preferential O3 activation. AIMD simulation demonstrated that the synchronous difference in mean-square displacements (MSD) and diffusion coefficient (Dc) of CH3SH (Dc=0.022) and O3 (Dc=0.0046) in the confined Pt/CMK-3 system could facilitate CH3SH migrate to Pt2+ through interfacial diffusion. Especially, the d-orbital electrons of Pt NCs interact sequentially with p-orbital electrons of CH3SH and O3 to maintain redox of Pt0/Pt2+. This study provides novel insights on effective mass transfer and kinetic properties of gaseous reaction between oxidant and pollutant by constructing unique interfacial diffusion behaviors.

Self-supported Ru-Fe-Ox nanospheres as efficient electrocatalyst to boost overall water-splitting in acid and alkaline media

Developing electrocatalysts with high activity and durability for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes remains challenging. In this study, we synthesize a self-supported ruthenium-iron oxide on carbon cloth (Ru-Fe-Ox/CC) using solvothermal methods followed by air calcination. The morphology of the nanoparticle exposes numerous active sites vital for electrocatalysis. Additionally, the strong electronic interaction between Ru and Fe enhances electrocatalytic kinetics optimization. The porous structure of the carbon cloth matrix facilitates mass transport, improving electrolyte penetration and bubble release. Consequently, Ru-Fe-Ox/CC demonstrates excellent catalytic performance, achieving low overpotentials of 32 mV and 28 mV for HER and 216 mV and 228 mV for OER in acidic and alkaline electrolytes, respectively. Notably, only 1.48 V and 1.46 V are required to reach 10 mA cm−2 for efficient water-splitting in both mediums, exhibiting remarkable stability. This research offers insights into designing versatile, highly efficient catalysts suitable for varied pH conditions.

Alleviating Ni electron depletion of Ni phthalocyanine by doping electron-deficient boron in CNTs support for enhanced CO2 electroreduction

Dispersed nickel phthalocyanine (NiPc) on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is the promising electrocatalyst for carbon dioxide reduction (CO2RR), but the strong interfacial electron interaction causes Ni electron depletion, limiting CO2RR performance. Herein, engineering the heteroatom doping in CNTs is proposed to alleviate electron depletion of Ni sites toward effective CO2RR. Boron heteroatoms induce electron-enriched Ni sites in NiPc/B-CNTs compared to phosphorus, nitrogen, and fluorine doped catalysts, resulting in superior CO2RR performance. Impressively, the NiPc/B-CNTs presents high CO Faraday efficiency (FECO) of >98 % from −20 to −80 mA cm−2 and excellent stability up to 37 h with sustained FECO of > 90 % in neutral electrolyte. Theoretical and experimental investigation reveals that implanting B heteroatoms alleviates Ni electron depletion via weakening electron transfer from NiPc to CNTs and thus reduces reaction barrier of *COOH formation, facilitating CO2RR. This study highlights importance of modifying carbon substrate in development of supported molecular catalysts for practical applications.

Stabilization of active ultrathin amorphous ruthenium oxide via constructing electronically interacted heterostructure for acidic water oxidation

Amorphous RuOx (a-RuOx) with disordered atomic arrangement and abundant coordinatively unsaturated Ru sites possesses high intrinsic electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the a-RuOx is prone to fast corrosion during OER in strong acid. Here, we realized the stabilization of an ultrathin a-RuOx layer via constructing heterointerface with crystalline α-MnO2 nanorods array (MnO2@a-RuOx). Benefiting from the strong electronic interfacial interaction, the as-formed MnO2@a-RuOx electrocatalyst display an ultralow overpotential of 128 mV to reach 10 mA cm−2 and stable operation for over 100 h in 0.1 M HClO4. The assembled proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzer reach 1 A cm−2 at applied cell voltage of 1.71 V. Extensive characterizations indicate the MnO2 substrate work as an electron donor pool to prevent the overoxidation of Ru sites and the OER proceeds in adsorbent evolution mechanism process without involving lattice oxygen. Our work provides a promising route to construct robust amorphous phase electrocatalysts.

Adjusting Ag0 on oxygen-deficient Ag/MnO2 through electronic metal-support interaction to enhance mineralization of toluene in post-plasma catalytic system

While nonthermal plasma (NTP) technology exhibits notable efficacy in removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), its practical application is impeded by a restricted carbon dioxide (CO2) selectivity. In this work, Ag-loaded α-MnO2 nanorods with strong electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) were synthesized to enhance the mineralization of toluene in post-plasma system (PPC). EMSI was constructed between Ag species and MnO2 by anchoring Ag on hydroxyl groups. Increasing Ag loading facilitated the generation of oxygen vacancies, which promoted electron transfer from MnO2 to Ag sites, reinforcing EMSI and favoring the formation of Ag0. The results showed that the 3% Ag-loaded α-MnO2 nanorods exhibited better activity than bare MnO2, with a remarkable boost in CO2 selectivity to 77.5%, far exceeding the 33% CO2 selectivity of MnO2. It was concluded that both oxygen vacancies and Ag0 affected the toluene conversion by enhancing the conversion of ozone (O3) to reactive oxygen species (ROS). Through in-situ DRIFTS, it was found that Ag0 transformed O3 to a higher concentration of atomic oxygen (O*), capable of degrading organic intermediates to CO2. Additionally, Ag0 facilitated the direct ring-opening of adsorbed toluene. This research introduces a novel method for designing catalysts with EMSI to improve the mineralization of VOCs.

Superhydrophilic NiFe-LDH@Co9S8-Ni3S2/NF heterostructures for high-current-density freshwater/seawater oxidation electrocatalysts

Designing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts with high efficiency and stability at large current densities is paramount for achieving hydrogen production through water splitting. In this study, a heterostructured NiFe-LDH coating Co9S8-Ni3S2 grown on nickel foam (NiFe-LDH@Co9S8-Ni3S2/NF) was successfully synthesized. The distinctive hierarchical structures featuring abundant heterointerfaces can effectively expose abundant active sites. The synergistic effect and strong electronic interaction between Co9S8-Ni3S2 and NiFe-LDH can enhance the intrinsic OER activity. Furthermore, the superhydrophilic characteristic of NiFe-LDH@Co9S8-Ni3S2/NF favors close contact between the electrode and electrolyte. Due to these advantages, NiFe-LDH@Co9S8-Ni3S2/NF can provide distinguished OER activity with low overpotentials of 274 mV in alkaline freshwater and 298 mV in alkaline seawater at 1000 mA cm−2, along with outstanding stability at high current density of 500 mA cm−2 over 200 h in both solutions. This study offers a valuable insight into fabricating high-performance OER electrocatalysts for seawater electrolysis in industrial applications.

Revealing Hydrogen Spillover on 1T/2H MoS2 Heterostructures for an Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction by Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy.

The in situ characterization of the heterostructure active sites during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) process and the direct elucidation of the corresponding catalytic structure-activity relationships are essential for understanding the catalytic mechanism and designing catalysts with optimized activity. Hence, exploring the underlying reasons behind the exceptional catalytic performance necessitates a detailed analysis. Herein, we employed scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) to in situ image the topography and local electrocatalytic activity of 1T/2H MoS2 heterostructures on mixed-phase molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with 20 nm spatial resolution. Our measurements provide direct data about HER activity, enabling us to differentiate the superior catalytic performance of 1T/2H MoS2 heterostructures compared to other active sites on the MoS2 surface. Combining this spatially resolved electrochemical information with density functional theory calculations and numerical simulations enables us to reveal the existence of hydrogen spillover from the 1T MoS2 surface to 1T/2H MoS2 heterostructures. Furthermore, it has been verified that hydrogen spillover can significantly enhance the electrocatalytic activity of the heterostructures, in addition to its strong electronic interaction. This study not only contributes to the future investigation of electrochemical processes at nanoscale active sites on structurally complex electrocatalysts but also provides new design strategies for improving the catalytic activity of 2D electrocatalysts.

Synthesis of Co0·52Cu0·48/Cu@S–C arrays for the enhanced performance of hydrazine-assisted hydrogen production

The development of efficient bifunctional catalysts is the key technology to replace oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) with lower theoretical potential to achieve high efficiency and energy-saving hydrogen production. In this work, the Co0·52Cu0·48/Cu@S–C (−1.3 V) composite with flower-like array was prepared by two-step electrodeposition coupled pyrolysis method. The electrochemical measurements showed that the driving voltages of the optimal composite for HzOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are respectively −118 mV and 47 mV at a current density (j) of 10 mA cm−2. The excellent performance of Co0·52Cu0·48/Cu@S–C (−1.3 V) composite is attributed to the fact that the flower-like structure exposes more active areas and facilitates the diffusion of electrolyte, the strong electron interaction between Co0·52Cu0·48/Cu and S–C substrate, which can be verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), enhances the electrical conductivity, the Co0·52Cu0·48/Cu heterogeneous interface reduces the water dissociation barrier and facilitates the dehydrogenation kinetics of N2H4 determined by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Due to the excellent performance of Co0·52Cu0·48/Cu@S–C (−1.3 V), the overall hydrazine splitting (OHzS) electrolytic cell was constructed with Co0·52Cu0·48/Cu@S–C (−1.3 V) as electrodes. The results showed the voltages required by the cell are 36, 210 and 282 mV at the current density values of 10, 100 and 200 mA cm−2 respectively, showing that Co0·52Cu0·48/Cu@S–C (−1.3 V) can be used for energy-saving hydrogen production by hydrazine assisted water electrolysis.

Strong Interactions between Au Nanoparticles and BiVO4 Photoanode Boosts Hole Extraction for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting.

Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is widely proposed as a key factor in tuning catalytic performances. This work provides a pioneering view for extending SMSI effect to bimetal oxide supports for PEC water splitting, and guides the interfacial electronic and geometric structure modulation of photoanodes consisting of metal NPs and reducible oxides for improved solar energy conversion efficiency.

In situ growth of highly wrinkled 3D volcano-like Fe3S4/Ni3S2/WO3/NiFe LDH/NF electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

The rational design of efficient, cost-effective, and durable electrocatalysts is crucial for the realization of hydrogen production through water splitting. The present study describes the synthesis of a novel three-dimensional (3D) volcano-like Fe3S4/Ni3S2/WO3/NiFe LDH/NF (Layered Double Hydroxides/Nickel Foam) electrocatalyst with a highly wrinkled structure through a two-step hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized electrocatalyst exhibits an exceptionally low overpotential of 77 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 131 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, owing to the unique morphology and strong electronic interactions between Fe3S4, Ni3S2 and WO3 heterostructures. The Fe3S4/Ni3S2/WO3/NiFe LDH/NF electrocatalyst demonstrates exceptional performance in overall water splitting when employed as both anode and cathode, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at an impressively low cell voltage of 1.5 V as well as exhibiting remarkable durability with little degradation over a period of 12 hours. This study presents a straightforward approach for the synthesis of highly efficient and durable non-noble metal catalysts for overall water splitting under hydrothermal conditions.

A Triply Linked Copper(III) Dicarbacorrole Dimer.

A triply linked dicarbacorrole dimer (7) was synthesized from a new meso-meso singly linked dicarbacorrole dimer precursor (6) via an oxidative fusion reaction by 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone (DDQ) in the presence of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH). Single crystal X-ray structure of 7 adopts a flat conformation with a length as ca. 15.946 Å and a width as 6.903 Å, which can be regarded as a short carbaporphyrinoid tape. Two coordinated Cu ions keeps the +3 oxidation state in 7, as confirmed by NMR spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This is in sharp contrast to the Osuka's triply linked tetrapyrrolic corrole dimers, where the inner 3NH form is not stable and thus can only act as a divalent ligand. Due to the non-aromatic nature of dicarbacorrole macrocycle, the largely decreased HOMO-LUMO gap and red-shifted absorption of 7 are best ascribed to the strong electronic interaction between two dipyrromethene-type chromophores. To our knowledge, this is the first fully fused carbaporphyrinoid dimer with β-β, meso-meso, β-β triply linkages prepared to date.

Optimizing the adsorption of intermediates through modulating Mn d-band centers by the Mn-Ce heterojunction for high-performance lithium-oxygen batteries

Admitting that rare-earth (RE)-based transition metal oxides (TMO) are emerging as a promising catalyst for lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries, the understanding of their electrocatalytic mechanism and active sites remains ambiguous. In this study, CeO2 nanoparticles modified MnOOH nanowires (CeO2@MnOOH NWs) is prepared by a simple solvothermal method as highly effective cathode catalysts for Li-O2 batteries. The incorporation of CeO2 nanoparticles into MnOOH facilitates a robust interaction between the 3d electronic state of MnOOH and the 4f electronic state of CeO2 at the Fermi level (Ef). The strong electron interaction at the heterogeneous interface between MnOOH and CeO2 promotes internal electron transfer. Compared to pristine MnOOH, the prepared CeO2@MnOOH NWs exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic activity and improved electrocatalytic stability. According to experimental analysis and density functional theory (DFT) results, it is demonstrated that there is a slight negative shift in the d-band center of the Mn site, resulting in faster electron transfer rates and higher conductivity. This acceleration of charge transfer optimizes the adsorption strength of the oxygen-containing intermediate (LiO2), thereby promoting the kinetics of the oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) and reducting the reaction over-potential. As a result, the electrochemical performances of Li-O2 batteries are greatly enhanced.

Ultrafine Ni-MoOx Nanoparticles Anchored on Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanosheets: A Highly Efficient Noble-Metal-Free Catalyst for Ammonia Borane Hydrolysis.

The development of low-cost and high-efficiency catalysts for the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane (AB, NH3BH3) is still a challenging technology. Herein, ultrafine MoOx-doped Ni nanoparticles (~3.0 nm) were anchored on g-C3N4@glucose-derived nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets via a phosphate-mediated method. The strong adsorption of phosphate-mediated nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (PNCS) for metal ions is a key factor for the preparation of ultrasmall Ni nanoparticles (NPs). Notably, the alkaline environment formed by the reduction of metal ions removes the phosphate from the PNCS surface to generate P-free (P)NCS so that the phosphate does not participate in the subsequent catalytic reaction. The synthesized Ni-MoOx/(P)NCS catalysts exhibited outstanding catalytic properties for the hydrolysis of AB, with a high turnover frequency (TOF) value of up to 85.7 min-1, comparable to the most efficient noble-metal-free catalysts and commercial Pt/C catalyst ever reported for catalytic hydrogen production from AB hydrolysis. The superior performance of Ni-MoOx/(P)NCS can be ascribed to its well-dispersed ultrafine metal NPs, abundant surface basic sites, and electron-rich nickel species induced by strong electronic interactions between Ni-MoOx and (P)NCS. The strategy of combining multiple modification measures adopted in this study provides new insights into the development of economical and high-efficiency noble-metal-free catalysts for energy catalysis applications.

Solvent-free selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics to azoxy compounds over Co single atoms decorated on Nb2O5 nanomeshes

The solvent-free selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics to azoxy compounds is highly important, yet challenging. Herein, we report an efficient strategy to construct individually dispersed Co atoms decorated on niobium pentaoxide nanomeshes with unique geometric and electronic properties. The use of this supported Co single atom catalysts in the selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to azoxybenzene results in high catalytic activity and selectivity, with 99% selectivity and 99% conversion within 0.5 h. Remarkably, it delivers an exceptionally high turnover frequency of 40377 h–1, which is amongst similar state-of-the-art catalysts. In addition, it demonstrates remarkable recyclability, reaction scalability, and wide substrate scope. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the catalytic activity and selectivity are significantly promoted by the unique electronic properties and strong electronic metal-support interaction in Co1/Nb2O5. The absence of precious metals, toxic solvents, and reagents makes this catalyst more appealing for synthesizing azoxy compounds from nitroaromatics. Our findings suggest the great potential of this strategy to access single atom catalysts with boosted activity and selectivity, thus offering blueprints for the design of nanomaterials for organocatalysis.
