Context. Interstellar absorption observed toward stellar targets changes slowly over long timescales, mainly due to the proper motion of the background target relative to the intervening clouds, such that over time, different parts of the intervening cloud are probed. On longer timescales, the slowly changing physical and chemical conditions in the cloud can also cause variation. Detecting such time variations thus provides an opportunity to study cloud structure. Aims. We searched for systematic variations in the absorption profiles of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) and interstellar atomic and molecular lines by comparing the high-quality data set from the recent ESO diffuse interstellar bands large exploration survey (EDIBLES) to older archival observations, bridging typical timescales of ~10 yr with a maximum timescale of 22 yr. Methods. For 64 EDIBLES targets, we found adequate archival observations. We selected 31 strong DIBs, seven atomic lines, and five molecular lines to focus our search on. We carefully considered various systematic effects and used a robust Bayesian quantitative test to establish which of these absorption features could display significant variations. Results. While systematic effects greatly complicate our search, we find evidence for variations in the profiles of the λλ4727 and 5780 DIBs in a few sightlines. Toward HD 167264, we find a new Ca I cloud component that appears and becomes stronger after 2008. The same sightline furthermore displays marginal, but systematic changes in the column densities of the atomic lines originating from the main cloud component in the sightline. Similar variations are seen toward HD 147933. Conclusions. Our high-quality spectroscopic observations in combination with archival data show that it is possible to probe interstellar time variations on time scales of typically a decade. Despite the fact that systematic uncertainties as well as the generally somewhat lower quality of older data complicate matters, we can conclude that time variations can be made visible, both in atomic lines and DIB profiles for a few targets, but that generally, these features are stable along many lines of sight. We present this study as an archival baseline for future comparisons, bridging longer periods.

First high-resolution optical spectra of the distant emission-line star VES 723 (IRAS 02110+6212)

ABSTRACT The first high-resolution spectra (resolving powers of R ≥ 60 000) of the emission-line star VES 723, which has an unknown evolutionary status, were taken at the 6-m Big Telescope Alt-Azimuthal and the 3.6-m Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope. The spectrum is dominated with powerful emission lines of neutral hydrogen and helium, and forbidden singly ionized nitrogen. The Hα and He i lines were found to exhibit broad foundations of the emission profiles at least 250 km s−1 wide. The strongest emission lines exhibit no noticeable variations during the observing period (2011–2017) except for the He i lines. The spectra contain multicomponent interstellar absorptions of Na i and K i (mult. 1) and several strongest diffuse interstellar bands, while photospheric absorptions have not been detected. The average radial velocity of the forbidden [N ii] emission line centres was adopted as the systemic velocity (Vsys ≈ −52 km s−1), which indicates a large distance of ≈6 kpc. Our luminosity estimates of log L/L⊙ = 3.7−4.0 for two different Gaia distance measurements, along with an effective temperature of Teff = 25 000 ± 2000 K and a fast decrease of the infrared flux longward of $\lambda \sim 10\, \mu{\rm m}$, allow us to suggest that VES 723 is neither a pre-main-sequence Herbig B[e] star nor a B[e] supergiant but rather a member of the FS CMa group of objects with the B[e] phenomenon.

Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs) on the spectra of GALAH data: Correlation study between DIBs and DIBs with color excess

Diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are a collection of weak interstellar absorptions in the spectra of reddened objects. We have successfully measured three strong DIBs (i.e., λ 5780, 5797, and 6614 Å) on the spectra of 125 Galactic Archaeology with HERMES (GALAH) target stars. The fitting uses a template spectrum in order to extract and measure individual DIB. We applied a correlation study between DIBs and confirmed that DIBs are positively correlated with each other, meaning that their carrier(s) are co-existing in the interstellar medium. Also, DIBs are well-correlated with color excess E(B-V). From this result, which is in a good agreement with earlier studies, conclude that DIBs can be used as a tracer of the interstellar medium.

Are the carriers of diffuse interstellar bands and extended red emission the same?

ABSTRACT We report the first spectroscopic observations of a background star seen through the region between the ionization front and the dissociation front of the nebula IC 63. This photodissociation region (PDR) exhibits intense extended red emission (ERE) attributed to fluorescence by large molecules/ions. We detected strong diffuse interstellar bands (DIB) in the stellar spectrum, including an exceptionally strong and broad DIB at λ4428. The detection of strong DIBs in association with ERE could be consistent with the suggestion that the carriers of DIBs and ERE are identical. The likely ERE process is recurrent fluorescence, enabled by inverse internal conversions from highly excited vibrational levels of the ground state to low-lying electronic states with subsequent transitions to ground. This provides a path to rapid radiative cooling for molecules/molecular ions, greatly enhancing their ability to survive in a strongly irradiated environment. The ratio of the equivalent widths (EWs) of DIBs λ5797 and λ5780 in IC 63 is the same as that observed in the low-density interstellar medium with ultraviolet (UV) interstellar radiation fields (ISRF) weaker by at least two orders of magnitude. This falsifies suggestions that the ratio of these two DIBs can serve as a measure of the UV strength of the ISRF. Observations of the nebular spectrum of the PDR of IC 63 at locations immediately adjacent to where DIBs were detected failed to reveal any presence of sharp emission features seen in the spectrum of the Red Rectangle nebula. This casts doubts upon proposals that the carriers of these features are the same as those of DIBs seen at slightly shorter wavelengths.

Electronic Transitions Responsible for C60+ Diffuse Interstellar Bands.

Diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are puzzling absorption features believed to contain critical information about molecular evolution in space. Despite the fact that C60+ recently became the first confirmed carrier of several DIBs, the nature of the corresponding transitions is not understood. Using electronic structure methods, we show that the two strong C60+ DIBs cannot be explained by electronic transitions to the two different excited 2 E1 g states or the two spin-orbit components of the lowest 2 E1 g state, as suggested before. We argue that the strong DIBs at 9632 and 9577 Å correspond to the cold excitations from the non-Franck-Condon region of the ground electronic state to the two components of the lowest 2 E1 g state split by Jahn-Teller distortion. The weak DIBs at 9428 and 9365 Å are assigned to the first vibronic transitions involving the low-energy vibrational modes and components of the lowest 2 E1 g electronic state.

Diffuse interstellar bands in the H II region M17

Context. Diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are broad absorption features measured in sightlines probing the diffuse interstellar medium. Although large carbon-bearing molecules have been proposed as the carriers producing DIBs, their identity remains unknown. DIBs make an important contribution to the extinction curve; the sightline to the young massive star-forming region M17 shows anomalous extinction in the sense that the total-to-selective extinction parameter (RV) differs significantly from the average Galactic value and may reach values RV > 4. Anomalous DIBs have been reported in the sightline towards Herschel 36 (RV = 5.5), in the massive star-forming region M8. Higher values of RV have been associated with a relatively higher fraction of large dust grains in the line of sight. Aims. Given the high RV values, we investigate whether the DIBs in sightlines towards young OB stars in M17 show a peculiar behaviour. Methods. We measure the properties of the most prominent DIBs in M17 and study these as a function of E(B–V) and RV. We also analyse the gaseous and dust components contributing to the interstellar extinction. Results. The DIB strengths in M17 concur with the observed relations between DIB equivalent width and reddening E(B–V) in Galactic sightlines. For several DIBs we discover a linear relation between the normalised DIB strength EW/AV and RV−1. These trends suggest two groups of DIBs: (i) a group of ten moderately strong DIBs that show a sensitivity to changes in RV that is modest and proportional to DIB strength, and (ii) a group of four very strong DIBs that react sensitively and to a similar degree to changes in RV, but in a way that does not appear to depend on DIB strength. Conclusions. DIB behaviour as a function of reddening is not peculiar in sightlines to M17. Also, we do not detect anomalous DIB profiles like those seen in Herschel 36. DIBs are stronger, per unit visual extinction, in sightlines characterised by a lower value of RV, i.e. those sightlines that contain a relatively large fraction of small dust particles. New relations between extinction normalised DIB strengths, EW/AV, and RV support the idea that DIB carriers and interstellar dust are intimately connected. Furthermore, given the distinct behaviour of two groups of DIBs, different types of carriers do not necessarily relate to the dust grains in a similar way.

A Survey of Near-infrared Diffuse Interstellar Bands

We propose a study of interstellar molecules with near-infrared (NIR) high-resolution spectroscopy as a science case for the 3.6-m Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT). In particular, we present the results obtained on-going survey of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) in NIR with the newly developed NIR high-resolution spectrograph WINERED, which offers a high sensitivity in the wavelength range of 0.91-1.36 µm. Using the WINERED spectrograph attached to the 1.3-m Araki telescope in Japan, we obtained high-quality spectra of a number of early-type stars in various environments, such as diffuse interstellar clouds, dark clouds and star-forming regions, to investigate the properties of NIR DIBs and constrain their carriers. As a result, we successfully identified about 50 new NIR DIBs, where only five fairly strong DIBs had been identified previously. Also, some properties of DIBs in the NIR are discussed to constrain the carriers of DIBs.

Gas-phase Absorptions of near 8300 Å below 10 K: Astronomical Implications

Abstract The gas-phase electronic spectrum of ( ) with an origin band at has been measured below by photofragmentation of helium complexes ( ) in a radiofrequency trap. is a medium-sized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) cation, and using an ion trapping technique it has been possible to record a high-quality gas-phase spectrum to directly compare with astronomical observations. No diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) have been reported at the wavelengths of the strongest absorption bands in the spectrum. Measurement of absolute absorption cross sections in the ion trap allows upper limits to the column density of this ion to be , indicating that even PAH cations of this size, which are believed to be stable in the interstellar medium, should be excluded as candidates for at least the strong DIBs.

Interstellar fullerene compounds and diffuse interstellar bands

Recently, the presence of fullerenes in the interstellar medium (ISM) has been confirmed especially with the first confirmed identification of two strong diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) with C60+. This justifies reassesing the importance of interstellar fullerenes of various sizes with endohedral or exohedral inclusions and heterofullerenes (EEHFs). The phenomenology of fullerenes is complex. In addition to fullerene formation in shock shattering, fully dehydrogenated PAHs in diffuse interstellar (IS) clouds could perhaps efficiently transform into fullerenes including EEHFs. But it is extremely difficult to assess their expected abundance, composition and size distribution, except for C60+. EEHFs share many properties with C60, as regards stability, formation/destruction and chemical processes, and many basic spectral features. We address the interstellar importance of various EEHFs as possible DIB carriers. Specifically, we discuss IS properties and the contributions of fullerenes of various sizes and charge such as C60+, metallofullerenes, heterofullerenes, fulleranes, fullerene-PAH compounds, H2@C60. We conclude that the landscape of interstellar fullerenes is probably much richer than heretofore realized. EEHFs, together with pure fullerenes of various sizes, have properties necessary to be suitably carriers of DIBs: carbonaceous nature; stability and resilience in the ISM; various heteroatoms and ionization states; relatively easy formation; few stable isomers; right spectral range; energy internal conversion; Jahn-Teller fine structure. This is supported by the C60+ DIBs. But, the lack of information about optical spectra other than C60 and IS abundances still precludes definitive assessment of the importance of fullerenes as DIB carriers. Their compounds could significantly contribute to DIBs, but it still seems difficult that they are the only important DIB carriers.

Using Machine Learning to classify the diffuse interstellar bands

Using over a million and a half extragalactic spectra we study the correlations of the Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs) in the Milky Way. We measure the correlation between DIB strength and dust extinction for 142 DIBs using 24 stacked spectra in the reddening range E(B-V) < 0.2, many more lines than ever studied before. Most of the DIBs do not correlate with dust extinction. However, we find 10 weak and barely studied DIBs with correlations that are higher than 0.7 with dust extinction and confirm the high correlation of additional 5 strong DIBs. Furthermore, we find a pair of DIBs, 5925.9A and 5927.5A which exhibits significant negative correlation with dust extinction, indicating that their carrier may be depleted on dust. We use Machine Learning algorithms to divide the DIBs to spectroscopic families based on 250 stacked spectra. By removing the dust dependency we study how DIBs follow their local environment. We thus obtain 6 groups of weak DIBs, 4 of which are tightly associated with C2 or CN absorption lines.

MAPPING THE INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM WITH NEAR-INFRARED DIFFUSE INTERSTELLAR BANDS

We map the distribution and properties of the Milky Way's interstellar medium as traced by diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) detected in near-infrared stellar spectra from the SDSS-III/APOGEE survey. Focusing exclusively on the strongest DIB in the H-band, at ~1.527 microns, we present a projected map of the DIB absorption field in the Galactic plane, using a set of about 60,000 sightlines that reach up to 15 kpc from the Sun and probe up to 30 magnitudes of visual extinction. The strength of this DIB is linearly correlated with dust reddening over three orders of magnitude in both DIB equivalent width (W_DIB) and extinction, with a power law index of 1.01 +/- 0.01, a mean relationship of W_DIB/A_V = 0.1 Angstrom mag^-1, and a dispersion of ~0.05 Angstrom mag^-1 at extinctions characteristic of the Galactic midplane. These properties establish this DIB as a powerful, independent probe of dust extinction over a wide range of A_V values. The subset of about 14,000 robustly detected DIB features have an exponential W_DIB distribution. We empirically determine the intrinsic rest wavelength of this transition to be lambda_0 = 15,272.42 Angstrom, and then calculate absolute radial velocities of the carrier, which display the kinematical signature of the rotating Galactic disk. We probe the DIB carrier distribution in three dimensions and show that it can be characterized by an exponential disk model with a scaleheight of about 100 pc and a scalelength of about 5 kpc. Finally, we show that the DIB distribution also traces large-scale Galactic structures, including the central long bar and the warp of the outer disk.

DIFFUSE INTERSTELLAR BANDS VERSUS KNOWN ATOMIC AND MOLECULAR SPECIES IN THE INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM OF M82 TOWARD SN 2014J

We discuss the absorption due to various constituents of the interstellar medium of M82 seen in moderately high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio optical spectra of SN 2014J. Complex absorption from M82 is seen, at velocities 45 $\le$ $v_{\rm LSR}$ $\le$ 260 km s$^{-1}$, for Na I, K I, Ca I, Ca II, CH, CH$^+$, and CN; many of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are also detected. Comparisons of the column densities of the atomic and molecular species and the equivalent widths of the DIBs reveal both similarities and differences in relative abundances, compared to trends seen in the ISM of our Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. Of the ten relatively strong DIBs considered here, six (including $\lambda$5780.5) have strengths within $\pm$20% of the mean values seen in the local Galactic ISM, for comparable N(K I); two are weaker by 20--45% and two (including $\lambda$5797.1) are stronger by 25--40%. Weaker than "expected" DIBs [relative to N(K I), N(Na I), and E(B-V)] in some Galactic sight lines and toward several other extragalactic supernovae appear to be associated with strong CN absorption and/or significant molecular fractions. While the N(CH)/N(K I) and N(CN)/N(CH) ratios seen toward SN 2014J are similar to those found in the local Galactic ISM, the combination of high N(CH$^+$)/N(CH) and high W(5797.1)/W(5780.5) ratios has not been seen elsewhere. The centroids of many of the M82 DIBs are shifted, relative to the envelope of the K I profile -- likely due to component-to-component variations in W(DIB)/N(K I) that may reflect the molecular content of the individual components. We compare estimates for the host galaxy reddening E(B-V) and visual extinction A$_{\rm V}$ derived from the various interstellar species with the values estimated from optical and near-IR photometry of SN 2014J.

INTERACTION BETWEEN THE BROAD-LINED TYPE Ic SUPERNOVA 2012ap AND CARRIERS OF DIFFUSE INTERSTELLAR BANDS

The diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are absorption features observed in optical and near-infrared spectra that are thought to be associated with carbon-rich polyatomic molecules in interstellar gas. However, because the central wavelengths of these bands do not correspond with electronic transitions of any known atomic or molecular species, their nature has remained uncertain since their discovery almost a century ago. Here we report on unusually strong DIBs in optical spectra of the broad-lined Type Ic supernova SN 2012ap that exhibit changes in equivalent width over short (~30 days) timescales. The 4428 and 6283 Angstrom DIB features get weaker with time, whereas the 5780 Angstrom feature shows a marginal increase. These nonuniform changes suggest that the supernova is interacting with a nearby source of the DIBs and that the DIB carriers possess high ionization potentials, such as small cations or charged fullerenes. We conclude that moderate-resolution spectra of supernovae with DIB absorptions obtained within weeks of outburst could reveal unique information about the mass-loss environment of their progenitor systems and provide new constraints on the properties of DIB carriers.

Laboratory Studies on the Role of PAHs as DIB Carriers

AbstractThe electronic spectroscopy of various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules has been studied in the laboratory at low temperatures using both molecular beam and matrix isolation spectroscopy techniques. While molecular beam spectra can be readily compared to astronomical observations, the band positions measured in Ne and Ar matrices are extrapolated to obtain rather good estimates for the same transitions in the gas phase. Absolute absorption cross sections are determined for gas-phase and matrix spectra by comparing them with calibrated solution spectra. All laboratory results are analyzed and discussed in view of the role that PAHs can play as carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). Our studies suggest that regular neutral PAHs are not responsible for any of the known strong DIBs.

STUDIES OF DIFFUSE INTERSTELLAR BANDS V. PAIRWISE CORRELATIONS OF EIGHT STRONG DIBs AND NEUTRAL HYDROGEN, MOLECULAR HYDROGEN, AND COLOR EXCESS

We establish correlations between equivalent widths of eight diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs), and examine their correlations with atomic hydrogen, molecular hydrogen, and EB-V . The DIBs are centered at \lambda\lambda 5780.5, 6204.5, 6283.8, 6196.0, 6613.6, 5705.1, 5797.1, and 5487.7, in decreasing order of Pearson\^as correlation coefficient with N(H) (here defined as the column density of neutral hydrogen), ranging from 0.96 to 0.82. We find the equivalent width of \lambda 5780.5 is better correlated with column densities of H than with E(B-V) or H2, confirming earlier results based on smaller datasets. We show the same is true for six of the seven other DIBs presented here. Despite this similarity, the eight strong DIBs chosen are not well enough correlated with each other to suggest they come from the same carrier. We further conclude that these eight DIBs are more likely to be associated with H than with H2, and hence are not preferentially located in the densest, most UV shielded parts of interstellar clouds. We suggest they arise from different molecules found in diffuse H regions with very little H (molecular fraction f<0.01). Of the 133 stars with available data in our study, there are three with significantly weaker \lambda 5780.5 than our mean H-5780.5 relationship, all of which are in regions of high radiation fields, as previously noted by Herbig. The correlations will be useful in deriving interstellar parameters when direct methods are not available. For instance, with care, the value of N(H) can be derived from W{\lambda}(5780.5).

A SURVEY OF DIFFUSE INTERSTELLAR BANDS IN THE ANDROMEDA GALAXY: OPTICAL SPECTROSCOPY OF M31 OB STARS

We present the largest sample to-date of intermediate-resolution blue-to-red optical spectra of B-type supergiants in M31 and undertake the first survey of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) in this galaxy. Spectral classifications, radial velocities and interstellar reddenings are presented for 34 stars in three regions of M31. Radial velocities and equivalent widths are given for the 5780 and 6283 DIBs towards 11 stars. Equivalent widths are also presented for the following DIBs detected in three sightlines in M31: 4428, 5705, 5780, 5797, 6203, 6269, 6283, 6379, 6613, 6660, and 6993. All of these M31 DIB carriers reside in clouds at radial velocities matching those of interstellar Na I and/or H I. The relationships between DIB equivalent widths and reddening (E(B-V)) are consistent with those observed in the local ISM of the Milky Way. Many of the observed sightlines show DIB strengths (per unit reddening) which lie at the upper end of the range of Galactic values. DIB strengths per unit reddening are found (with 68% confidence), to correlate with the interstellar UV radiation field strength. The strongest DIBs are observed where the interstellar UV flux is lowest. The mean Spitzer 8/24 micron emission ratio in our three fields is slightly lower than that measured in the Milky Way, but we identify no correlation between this ratio and the DIB strengths in M31. Interstellar oxygen abundances derived from the spectra of three M31 H II regions in one of the fields indicate that the average metallicity of the ISM in that region is 12 + log[O/H] = 8.54 +- 0.18, which is approximately equal to the value in the solar neighbourhood.

THE CARBON MIRA UV AURIGAE AND ITS COMPANION

The carbon Mira UV Aur (photometric period 394 days) and its companion present several interesting spectroscopic issues. The late B-type companion, at a separation of 336, is seen through at least two shells expanding from the C9-type primary, as evidenced by a series of narrow, displaced absorption features at the D1,2 lines of Na I. The (projected) expansion velocity of the fastest shell is about 116 km s–1, much larger than the typical outflow velocity of about 15 km s–1 seen in C-type giants, but reminiscent of the velocities observed in the envelope of another C-type Mira, V Hya. Emission lines of H, Ca II, and Na I are present in UV Aur A; its Balmer emission lines are heavily mutilated by overlying C-type absorptions (much as is seen in Me-type Miras), so they must be formed at a lower level. UV Aur B offers the opportunity to test a speculation that the carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs), believed to be a family of carbon-containing polyatomic molecules, may be formed in cool, carbon-rich stars. Moderately strong DIBs are indeed present in the spectrum of UV Aur B at about the same strength and velocity seen in nearby (in the sky) B-type stars. But the essential question is, are DIBs present in the outflow from UV Aur A, at the velocities of the Na I shell components? The answer is no, at least at the level permitted by the signal-to-noise ratio of these Keck/HIRES spectrograms.

Fine structure in the profiles of strong diffuse interstellar bands

High-resolution echelle spectra of five reddened OB stars are used to analyse details of the profiles of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) at 4726, 4735, 5418, 5850, 6196, 6376, 6379 A together with the well studied 5797, 5780 and 6614 ones. All targets do not show Doppler splitting in the interstellar CH 4300 band with the applied resolving power R = 115 000. The profiles of DIBs differ from object to object except 5418 which looks invariant in our sample: the DIB is a good candidate for further study of possible isotopic effect. We also found that the width of bands at 5797 and 6614 A probably is more sensitive to the temperature (and density) effects than that of other DIBs in the sample, though almost all diffuse bands are narrowest in most ζ -type object (HD 179406) of the sample. On the other hand, it can be just peculiar effect as in a case of unusual line of sight HD 147889 which demonstrates very broad 5780 and 6614 A diffuse bands what hardly can be explained by temperature effects.

Profiles of Very Weak Diffuse Interstellar Bands around 6440 A

Profiles of very weak diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) between 6400 and 6470 A observed with high resolution and very high S/N are demonstrated. We show that with the increasing quality of reddened stellar spectra, the whole spectral range is covered with weak or very weak DIBs—at least one every 2-3 A. We also present the details of the profiles of a few stronger features; the presence of substructures resembles the profiles of strong DIBs observed in high resolution during the last decade and supports the hypothesis of a molecular origin of at least a majority of DIBs.

Diffuse Interstellar Bands Toward HD 62542

Diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) have been detected for the first time along the peculiar translucent line of sight toward HD 62542, which passes through a diffuse cloud core. Although only a small fraction (18 out of more than 300) of generally weak DIB features have been shown to correlate with and C_3 (the C_2 DIBs), it is predominantly these DIBs that are observed toward HD 62542. The typically strong DIBs λλ5780 and 5797 are detected but are significantly weaker than toward other lines of sight with similar reddening. Other commonly observed DIBs (such as λλ4430, 6270, and 6284) remain noticeably absent. These observations further support the suggestion that the line of sight toward HD 62542 crosses only the core of a diffuse cloud and show that the correlation between the DIBs and small carbon chains is maintained in environments with very large fractions of molecular hydrogen, f_(H_2) > 0.8. A comparison of CH, CN, C_2, and C_3 column densities and DIB strengths toward HD 62542, HD 204827, and HD 172028 suggests that the line of sight toward HD 204827 passes through a diffuse cloud core similar to that seen toward HD 62542, as well as what might be referred to as a diffuse cloud envelope. This indicates that the bare core toward HD 62542 may not have significantly different relative chemical abundances from other diffuse cloud cores and that the DIBs may serve as a diagnostic of such cores.
