Improving QoS in mobile multimedia streaming with SCTP-PQ

The Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) is often the preferred transport layer protocol in streaming applications. This protocol combines the best aspects of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP), but also offers additional features. SCTP supports multihoming and multi-streaming applications and has a congestion mechanism like TCP. Media streaming consists of different types of frames with different levels of importance. For example, I-frames carry more information than B-frames in Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). Usually, MPEG frames are processed using the First-In-First-Out (FIFO) algorithm. In this paper, a four-level priority queue integrated protocol named SCTP Priority Queue (SCTP-PQ) has been developed to reduce jitter and delay in real-time multimedia streaming for mobile devices. As part of the development, priority and retransmitted packets are determined on the sending side and these packets are processed faster by using the priority queue on the receiving side. In this way, the average queue delay of priority packets on the receiving side is reduced by 90 % and the throughput values are increased by an average of 10 times. The developed protocol has been extensively tested and compared with SCTP. The results show that the SCTP-PQ outperforms the standard SCTP in terms of jitter and delay.

QOS aware vertical handover process in heterogeneous wireless network

VHOs (Vertical Handovers) have become popular research problems in real-world environments, with frequencies of access to the network increasing to millions of users. It is required to select and provide the most suitable access network for the users who enter into the network environment. This work introduces a combination of techniques namely M-ANPs (Multiple Analytic Network Processes) combined with TOPSISs (Method for Order Preference by a resemblance to ideal solutions) for choosing access networks that satisfy QoS's (Quality of Services). Generally, networks fail to ensure the successful routing between different access networks which is handled by this research work with its proposed QoS-VHP (QoS-aware vertical Handover Process). In this work initially, handover initiation is performed. After initiation, system discovery is performed to identify the nearest access network which can be reachable with minimum distance and bandwidth consumption. After picking the nearest access network services, a handover decision is achieved to select the most suitable access network which can satisfy the constraints CB's (Costs for Bytes), ABs (Available Bandwidths), Security, D (Packet Delays), J (Packet Jitters) and L (Packet Losses). This optimal selection of access networks is used to Modified TOPSIS Method to ensure a more accurate selection of suitable access networks for reliable data transmission. After the handover decision process, handover execution is performed with the concern of the transport layer which is done by using a modified Stream Control Transmission Protocol. The overall proposal was simulated on an NS2-simulator where the expected parameters like handover delay, probability of handover failure, and throughput are evaluated with the results of 0.69–0.77 s, 0.45, and 80Kbps respectively which, proved its ability to optimize protocols.

Comparative Analysis of TCP, TCP-Vegas, and SCTP in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks

Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANET) are a collection of mobiles and smart devices that communicate using wireless links. These types of networks are growing at the best speed and being used at a large scale than before ever because of their high availability and mobility. As the usage scale of MANET devices has been increasing, the challenges have also increased for example the proper delivery of data or information to every mobile node. Traditionally, transmission control protocol(TCP) is used for delivery but it does not fit in all scenarios due to some of its limitations such as network congestion and quick recovery in case of link failure. In this, a comparative analysis of TCP is performed with the stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) and a TCP variant called TCP VEGAS. A number of ad hoc Scenarios are proposed with varying numbers of mobile nodes,i.e 11,21, and 31. The results obtained indicate that SCTP outperforms TCP and VEGAS in throughput. The packet lifetime while using SCTP is also small i.e 0.19 seconds. The link utilization of SCTP is better than TCP and VEGAS. However, TCP increases its link utilization than VEGAS for the nodes in MANET of large delay.

A Secure Convergence of Data Transmission and Intelligent Authentication Using a Sensing Approach for the Internet of Thing

The IoT’s millions of sensor-equipped gadgets upload data to computers for management and use in smart grids, intelligent transportation networks, healthcare networks, and smart cities. Sensor data needs a safe server-sensor connection. Studying altered data could have catastrophic consequences. Internet-of-Things sensors must authenticate with the reader and base station before sending data. IoT sensors can securely and effectively communicate data. Correction evidence in the suggested technique reveals that the required data is created at the receiver using the normal Euclidean parameters of IoT sensors. The proposed approach is compatible with most assaults, making it a good security option. A framework for edge IoT devices can optimize latency, security, and other performance characteristics. Constraints Application Protocol (COAP) and The Stream Control Transmission Protocol (AESCQTTP) combine cooperative resource management, machine learning, context-aware computing, and flexible infrastructure to handle communication and computing difficulties. To reduce end-to-end latency by (7.13–7.35)%, raise security by 98.99%, and increase efficient pocket distribution to 98%. This study examined existing research issues and edge-computing technologies and proposed a novel strategy for optimizing edge-IoT system performance metrics. This arrangement could let future networks communicate securely.

DB-CMT: A New Concurrent Multi-path Stream Control Transport Protocol

Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) exploits multiple network interfaces to provide multi-streaming and data chunk ordering in a stream. An extended feature of SCTP, i.e., Concurrent Multi-path Transfer (CMT), bids concurrent data transmission in a multi-path data transfer environment and guarantees bandwidth aggregation, load sharing, robustness, and reliability. In such an environment, the paths usually have distinct characteristics (i.e., delay, Packet Loss Rate (PLR), and bandwidth). Thus, data chunks are received out-of-ordered at the destination. As a result, CMT causes excessive receiver buffer blocking and unnecessary congestion window (cwnd) reductions. Also, during the selection of the retransmission destination path (to resend a lost data chunk), CMT does not take into account vital Quality of Service (QoS) parameters such as the PLR of a path under consideration. This paper introduces a new Delay-Based Concurrent Multi-path Transfer (DB-CMT) approach that transmits data on multiple paths according to their delay. In this scheme, we present a Delay-Based Data chunk Scheduling Policy (DB-DSP), a Retransmission Path Selection Policy (RTX-CL), and a new Delay-Based Fast Retransmission Policy (DB-FRP). The simulation results show that the DB-CMT’s RTX-CL policy performs better than the well-known RTX-CWND and RTX-LOSSRATE retransmission schemes. Also, the overall performance of DB-CMT witnesses improved throughput, fewer timeouts, and reduced File Transfer Time (FTT) performances.

Secure Real-time Data Transmission for Drone Delivery Services using Forward Prediction Scheduling SCTP

Drone technology is considered the most effective solution for the improvement of various industrial fields. As a delivery service, drones need a secure communication system that is also able to manage all of the information data in real-time. However, because the data transmission process occurs in a wireless network, data will be sent over a channel that is more unstable and vulnerable to attack. Thus, this research, purposes a Forward Prediction Scheduling-based Stream Control Transmission Protocol (FPS-SCTP) scheme that is implemented on drone data transmission system. This scheme supports piggybacking, multi-streaming, and Late Messages Filter (LMF) which will improve the real-time transmission process in IEEE 802.11 wireless network. Meanwhile, on the cybersecurity aspect, this scheme provides the embedded option feature to enable the encryption mechanism using AES and the digital signatures mechanism using ECDSA. The results show that the FPS-SCTP scheme has better network performance than the default SCTP, and provides full security services with low computation time. This research contributes to providing a communication protocol scheme that is suitable for use on the internet of drones’ environment, both in real-time and reliable security levels.

Real-Life Implementation and Evaluation of Coupled Congestion Control for WebRTC Media and Data Flows

WebRTC enables users to simultaneously transfer media (over the Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP)) and data (over the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP)) between web browsers, multiplexed onto a single UDP port pair. This design choice of using two different transport protocols, each with their own congestion control mechanism, can lead to competition between the flows, resulting in undesirable spikes in queuing delay and packet loss. In this paper, we investigate solutions to the harmful effects WebRTC flows cause on each other by having the different congestion controllers of the flows collaborate. Using implementations in the Chromium browser, we show that our mechanism can combine a set of heterogeneous congestion control mechanisms, fairly allocate the available bandwidth between the flows, and reduce overall delay and losses.

An Adaptive CMT-SCTP Scheme: A Reinforcement Learning Approach

With the continuous increase of end users and types of services, the scale of the network has shown explosive growth, which has brought tremendous pressure and challenges to network data transmission. How to achieve high-quality data transmission has become a core issue. Single-path transmission has been difficult to meet the above requirements. The concurrent multipath transfer extension for stream control transmission protocol (CMT-SCTP), which supports multipath and independent data streams, can solve this problem. However, the current transmission path assessment scheme has too large granularity to make full use of the resources of the transition zone. Most studies ignore the different requirements of different services, a single transmission strategy, and the lack of an intelligent dynamic adjustment mechanism. Therefore, we designed a QCMT(Q-learning based CMT-SCTP) scheduling method. This method considers the multi-dimensional characteristics of the path and the characteristic preferences of different services, periodically evaluates and trains the reinforcement learning model for service adaptation, and makes scheduling decisions dynamically. Experimental results show that dynamic scheduling based on path parameters and service preferences can reduce message delay and improve network throughput.

Adaptive Congestion Window Algorithm for the Internet of Things Enabled Networks

Heterogeneous constrained computing resources in the Internet of Things (IoT) are communicated, collected, and share information from the environment using sensors and other high-speed technologies which generate tremendous traffic and lead to congestion in the Internet of Things (IoT) networks. This paper proposes an Adaptive Congestion Window (ACW) algorithm for the Internet of Things. This algorithm is adapted to the traffic changes in the network. The main objective of this paper is to increase the packet delivery ratio and reduce delay while enhancing the throughput which can be attained by avoiding congestion. Therefore, in the proposed algorithm, the congestion window size is depending on the transmission rate of the source node, the available bandwidth of the path, and the receiving rate of the destination node. The congestion window size is altered when the link on the path needs to be shared/released with/by other paths of different transmission in the network. The proposed algorithm, ACW is simulated, evaluated in terms of packet delivery ratio, throughput, and delay. The performance of the proposed algorithm, ACW is compared with IoT Congestion Congrol Algorithm (IoT-CCA) and Improved Stream Control Transmission Protocol (IMP-SCTP) and proved to be better by 27.4%, 11.8%, and 33.7% than IoT-CCA and 44.1%, 22.6%, and 50% than IMP-SCTP concerning packet delivery ratio, throughput, and delay respectively. The variation in congestion window size with time is also projected.

Simulated Performance of SCTP and TFRC Over MANETs

Mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) are composed of mobile nodes communicating through wireless medium, without any fixed centralized infrastructure. Providing quality of service (QoS) support to multimedia streaming applications over MANETs is vital. This paper focuses on QoS support, provided by the stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) and the TCP-friendly rate control (TFRC) protocol to multimedia streaming applications over MANETs. In this study, three QoS parameters were considered jointly: (1) packet delivery ratio (PDR), (2) end-to-end delay, (3) and throughput. Specifically, the authors analyzed and compared the simulated performance of the SCTP and TFRC transport protocols for delivering multimedia streaming over MANETs. Two simulation scenarios were conducted to study the impact of traffic load and node speed (mobility) to their performance. Based on the simulation results, the authors found that the PDR and the end-to-end delay of TFRC are slightly better than those of SCTP in both scenarios. Additionally, the performance of SCTP is significantly better than TFRC in terms of throughput.

Deploying a Fast Detection and Eviction Mechanism of Invalid Connection-Oriented Flow-Entries in SDNs: A Scalability Approach

As a new paradigm of network architecture, Software Defined Networking (SDN) has been used in a large number of scenarios because it realizes flexible and efficient fine-grained flow control of the network, and promotes the evolution of the network to a programmable and scalable direction. However, the transition of the traditional networking model to SDN architectures poses scalability issues due to the limitation of the flow-table in size. Facing the traffic explosion on future networks with resource-constrained architectures, the storage space of the flow-table is not enough to bear so many flow-entries so that it not only causes performance degradation in data delivery but also results in scalability and cost-efficiency issues. To address this issue, in this article, we propose a solution to expedited evict the invalid flow-entries by detecting the disconnect messages of connection-oriented protocols such as Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) based on SDN controller and OpenFlow or programming protocol-independent packet processors (P4) switches. The behavior of detection is achieved by adding a specific SDN ruleset within the transport-layer in between the controller and switches. Different from the original timeout solutions, our scheme can delete invalid flow-entries in time according to the transmission layer disconnection instead of relying on the original timeout mechanism. Through a series of simulation results. we also demonstrate the superiority of our proposed solution in reducing the flow-entries occupancy and control overhead on controller, and improving the table-miss rate.

Enhanced Multistream Fast TCP: Rapid Bandwidth Utilization after Fast-Recovery Phase

The purpose of this study is to enhance the performance of Multistream Fast Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) keeping in view the recent web-based applications that are being deployed on long-range, high-speed, and high-bandwidth networks. To achieve the objective of the research study, a congestion control after fast-recovery module for congestion control scheme of Multistream Fast TCP is proposed. The module optimized the performance of the protocol by reducing the time that is required to consume the available bandwidth after a fast-recovery phase. The module is designed after studying additive-increase, multiplicative-decrease and rate-based congestion window management schemes of related transport protocols. The module adjusts the congestion window on receipt of each individual acknowledgment instead of each round trip time after the fast-recovery phase until it consumes vacant bandwidth of the network link. The module is implemented by using Network Simulator 2. Convergence time, throughput, fairness index, and goodput are the parameters used to assess the performance of proposed module. The results indicate that Enhanced Multistream Fast TCP with congestion control after fast recovery recovers its congestion window in a shorter time period as compared to multistream Fast TCP, Fast TCP, TCP New Reno, and Stream Control Transmission Protocol. Consequently, Enhanced Multistream Fast TCP consumes the available network bandwidth in lesser time and increases the throughput and goodput. The proposed module enhanced the performance of the transport layer protocol. Our findings demonstrate the performance impact in the form of a decrease in the convergence time to consume the available network bandwidth and the increase in the throughput and the goodput.

E-ANDSF-Based Base Station Selection Scheme by Using MLP in Untrusted Environments

In this paper, we design an enhanced access network discovery and selection function (ANDSF), named E-ANDSF, which provides previous mobile access gateway (PMAG) with information for base station selection, and propose an improved IP-based handover/offload scheme, called I P-based H andover/offload system assisted by E - A N D SF (IHEAD), which invokes multilayer perceptron, a machine learning technique, to select a base station for user equipment to handover or offload network traffic to wireless local area network (WLAN). The purpose is improving network service quality with the assistance of stream control transmission protocol and E-ANDSF. Experimental results show that the IHEAD outperforms those tested schemes.

Machine Learning Prediction Approach to Enhance Congestion Control in 5G IoT Environment

The 5G network is a next-generation wireless form of communication and the latest mobile technology. In practice, 5G utilizes the Internet of Things (IoT) to work in high-traffic networks with multiple nodes/sensors in an attempt to transmit their packets to a destination simultaneously, which is a characteristic of IoT applications. Due to this, 5G offers vast bandwidth, low delay, and extremely high data transfer speed. Thus, 5G presents opportunities and motivations for utilizing next-generation protocols, especially the stream control transmission protocol (SCTP). However, the congestion control mechanisms of the conventional SCTP negatively influence overall performance. Moreover, existing mechanisms contribute to reduce 5G and IoT performance. Thus, a new machine learning model based on a decision tree (DT) algorithm is proposed in this study to predict optimal enhancement of congestion control in the wireless sensors of 5G IoT networks. The model was implemented on a training dataset to determine the optimal parametric setting in a 5G environment. The dataset was used to train the machine learning model and enable the prediction of optimal alternatives that can enhance the performance of the congestion control approach. The DT approach can be used for other functions, especially prediction and classification. DT algorithms provide graphs that can be used by any user to understand the prediction approach. The DT C4.5 provided promising results, with more than 92% precision and recall.

Parallel Transmission of Distributed Sensor Based on SCTP and TCP for Heterogeneous Wireless Networks in IoT.

Sensors in the Internet of Things (IoT) generate large amounts of data, which requires high-speed data transmission. In order to achieve the parallel transmissions of the wireless sensor network on the transmission layer, the performance of stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) and transmission control protocol (TCP) in the wireless sensor network under different packet error rates was simulated and compared. A dynamic multipath handover method for SCTP (MS-SCTP) was proposed to improve the transmission performance, which selects the transmission path according to the packet error rate and the retransmission ratio in the sender’s buffer. The TCP and SCTP protocol switching method (TCP-SCTP) was proposed to detect the current network traffic and adjust the MS-SCTP or TCP method. Analysis and simulation results show that MS-SCTP and TCP-SCTP could improve network throughput and reduce packet loss rate. MS-SCTP and TCP-SCTP can be combined with other technologies and channel allocation algorithms to improve network traffic.

Loss-Aware CMT-Based Multipathing Scheme for Efficient Data Delivery to Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

With the rapid development of wireless networks, multiple network interfaces are gradually being designed into more and more mobile devices. When it comes to data delivery, Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP)-based Concurrent Multipath Transfer (CMT) has proven to be quite useful solution for multiple home networks, and it could become the key transport protocol for the next generation of wireless communications. The CMT delay caused by data rearrangement has been noticed by researchers, but they have seldom considered the frequent occurrence of packet loss that occurs in the high-loss networks. In this paper, we proposed an original loss-aware solution for multipath concurrent transmission (CMT-LA) that achieves the following goals: (1) identifying packet loss on all paths, (2) distributing packets adaptively across multiple available paths according to their packet loss and loss variation, and (3) maintaining the features of bandwidth aggregation and parallel transmission of CMT while improving the throughput performance. The results of our simulations showed that the proposed CMT-LA reduces reordering delay and unnecessary fast retransmissions, thereby demonstrating that CMT-LA is a more efficient data delivery scheme than classic CMT.

A congestion avoidance mechanism in multimedia transmission over MANET using SCTP multi-streaming

Congestion is a challenging problem in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) because of resource constraints, and dynamic routing. Congestion control is a big concern in achieving fairness between optimal network resource utilization and end-to-end flow control. In MANETs, with shared resources, when multiple senders contend for the same link bandwidth, data rate by each sender must be adjusted to avoid network overload which causes Quality of Service compromises. Strict ordering of data transmission in Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) causes poorer performance during data transmission in MANETs. Unlike TCP, Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) has a built-in multi-streaming feature to alleviate this issue caused by strict data ordering when using a single data stream within a transport connection. In this paper, we propose a Congestion Avoidance Mechanism over MANET routing based on Data Priority and Streaming Delay Weights (SDWs) which also utilizes SCTP multi-streaming (namely CAM-SCTP). Our proposal implements a Priority Manager (PM) to effectively select a stream to transmit data based on the data priority and by dynamically computing an SDW value per node. Experimental evaluation of the CAM-SCTP is performed for three different data types. The results show improvement in throughput for all data types while maintaining lower jitter, loss, and overhead.

Enhancing Fast TCP’s Performance Using Single TCP Connection for Parallel Traffic Flows to Prevent Head-of-Line Blocking

Hypertext Transfer Protocol-2 (HTTP/2) partially resolved the problem of Head-of-Line Blocking (HoLB) by multiplexing independent messages at the application layer. This enables simultaneous transmission of multiple requests over the same connection independently. However, this technique becomes ineffective when packet loss occurs in the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) flow in which case all the independent streams are blocked until the retransmission of the lost packet; this problem is known as HoLB at TCP-level. The problem arises because the underlying TCP does not differentiate between independent messages/streams from application layer protocol. This study proposes a multistream framework for Fast TCP to support multiple independent messages/streams of the application. The proposed framework uses separate flows, buffers, and segments for each independent stream, and interleaves these segments over a single TCP connection. It makes TCP compatible with HTTP/2, reduces data delivery latency between transport and application layer, and alleviates head-of-line blocking. We implemented this framework in Fast TCP and carried out a simulation-based comparison between Multistream Fast TCP (MFast TCP) and Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP). Our results show that MFast TCP significantly improved performance over SCTP in the event of HoLB.

A Cross-Layer SCTP Scheme With Redundant Detection for Real-Time Transmissions in IEEE 802.11 Wireless Networks

In this paper, we propose a Cross-Layer Stream Control Transmission Protocol (CL-SCTP), which supports multi-streaming and partial reliability for real-time transmissions in IEEE 802.11 wireless networks. In the application layer, we design a Screening Overdue MEssages (SOME) algorithm to leave out transmissions of probable overdue messages. An overdue message refers to a message exceeding its delay budget before the message can be transmitted in the transport layer. Then in the MAC layer, we propose the MOnitoring REdundant frames (MORE) algorithm to detect and remove probable redundant frames. A retransmitted frame from the upper layer makes the same frame entering the MAC layer earlier a redundant frame. We discuss our scheme in detail and perform simulations for both random losses and burst losses. Simulation results show our scheme performs better than Cross-Layer Forwarding Prediction Scheduling (CL-FPS), partially reliable SCTP (PR-SCTP), and SCTP in terms of efficient delivery ratio, average goodput, average end-to-end delay, and representative video metrics including Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity (SSIM), and Video Quality Metric (VQM).

Efficient Streaming of Video Frames over Heterogeneous Wireless Network

Transferring high quality video stream through a heterogeneous wireless network has many challenges due to the varying data rate and round trip time(RTT) involved in the network and the more stringent quality of service(QoS) requirements of the multimedia application such as on time delivery , minimum delay etc. User datagram protocol (UDP), a connectionless, unreliable transport protocol has been widely used for transferring video frames.UDP cannot guarantee reliable information delivery and may lead to packet loss. The packet loss, increases with time varying bandwidth availability in the heterogeneous wireless networks. Transmission control protocol(TCP) can be an alternate transport layer protocol to provide reliable delivery of video information. But, using TCP for wireless networks has limitations due to misinterpretation of packet loss, frequent link failure, asymmetric link behaviour etc.,. which minimizes the throughput and in turn degrades the quality of the video frames transmitted. This paper analyses an efficient scheme to use Heterogeneous Environment Retransmission algorithm with SCTP (HERTS) to transfer video data in the heterogeneous environment. By using multi-homing and multi-streaming feature of Stream control transmission protocol (SCTP), the packet delivery rate, through put and delay requirements can be optimized. The transport layer model suggested in this paper aims at reducing the occupancy of the retransmitted packets in the link, by using a separate end to end path allotted for retransmission.
