Librarian-academic collaboration: the role of strategic communication and relationship management

Information literacy and critical thinking skills are essential in the information age towardsachieving academic success and being adequately skilled for lifelong learning. Academiclibraries have an indispensable role to play in this regard. Collaboration between librarians andacademics is important to ensure both effective information-literacy training and service provisionto students and to the academic community. However, a lack of understanding, knowledge, andcommunication regarding academic libraries’ teaching and research role is proving to be anobstacle in obtaining librarian-academic collaboration. Academic libraries do mostly not applystrategic communication management to build and maintain relationships with its stakeholders,which contributes to the challenges surrounding librarian-academic collaboration. This paperreports on how four academic libraries practise communication and relationship managementto enhance librarian-academic collaboration. The study aims to make recommendations for theapplication of more effective, strategy-driven communication and relationship management toenhance librarian-academic collaboration.

Las organizaciones en la actualidad buscan nuevas fuentes de ventajas competitivas que les permitan la supervivencia en el mercado. Una de estas fuentes en la comunicación estratégica, es por ello por lo que la presente investigación ha buscado analizar y revisar el estado actual del arte frente a la comunicación organizacional como factor de la ventaja competitiva de la organización/empresa, para ello se definieron los conceptos que nutren la teoría de la comunicación, la comunicación estratégica y la relevancia de ello para garantizar ventaja competitiva. De igual forma se establecieron como herramientas estratégicas de comunicación en la organización los modelos de comunicación que se adecuan a partir de la necesidad de cada empresa, pero en los que se pueden identificar elementos comunes e infaltables; cuestión por la cual, se estructuró un modelo de comunicación organizacional genérico a partir de los elementos desarrollados por los autores estudiados que puede servir de base para la construcción de uno propio. Los sistemas de comunicación en la organización deben considerar que su base es la interacción humana por lo que no pueden apartar ese componente de su lógica.

The Role of Strategic Communication in Changing the Population’s Perception of the Risks to National Security

"The increase in regional instability, generated by the current Russian-Ukrainian conflict as well as the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic have highlighted the need for effective governance through the application of tools aimed at providing security to the citizens. The development of technology, which has led to unrestricted access to information, has also created the emergence of new types of threats, such as fake-news, propaganda or disinformation, threats that require punctual, flexible and adaptable methods to counter, diminish or eliminate. A very good knowledge of the specifics of the Romanian people and their perception of security risks is required. Starting from the premise that the mentioned threats have already manifested, resulting in a wrong perception of the population on security risks, a tool that has proven its effectiveness since Antiquity and that can be used by the state, through its institutions, could be represented by strategic communication. This article first addresses the issue of the population’s perception of security risks, then issues related to strategic communication, and as a final research direction, the way in which risk perception can be changed through StratCom."

The Effects of Dangerous World Beliefs on COVID-19 Preventive Behaviors in Singapore: The Moderating Role of Public Health Communication

ABSTRACT This research purposes to examine the role of strategic communication, specifically the effectiveness of government's crisis communication messages at the onset of COVID-19 pandemic in Singapore, on disease preventive behaviors. It employed a mixed method research approach by first carrying out a content analysis of 7128 news headlines on COVID-19 to confirm our presupposition that the media may be communicating messages that the world order is being threatened. Informed by our findings that 90% of news reports were framed to suggest a dangerous world, we surveyed 453 respondents in the main study, and tested if people's beliefs in a dangerous world (BDW) were linked to their disease preventive behaviors (DPB), and whether such a link was modulated by how effective they perceived the government's pandemic communication. As predicted, results revealed that the perceived effectiveness of the government's pandemic communication trumped the effects of beliefs in a dangerous world such that the link between BDW and DPB was significant only when the perceived effectiveness was low. Further analysis of the effects of specific communication dimensions on disease preventive behaviors suggests that public health communication needs to be strategically calibrated to offer personally relevant messages that are informative and objective. The Nexus Between Strategic Decision-Making, Strategic Communication and Organizational Performance: A Critical Literature Review

Strategic decisions are long term, highly unstructured, complex, inherently risky, and have a great impact on the future of the organization. Strategic decisions are those important decisions that typically require a vast number of organizational resources, and consideration of the firm’s environment consideration. Decision-making is so important that none of the managerial functions can be performed without it. Decisions influence organizational direction, administration, and structure. Decisions can be costly or beneficial depending on the approach of the decision-making process, the quality of the decisions made. In this regard, strategic decision- making should be well communicated. In an organic company with a stated focus on the people who make it up, its flexibility allows important information to arrive in necessary doses, impacting daily decisions and in the organization itself, with no conflicting messages to the market and simplifying the process of an implementation strategy. Communication holds several fences to implementing a strategy in a company. The strategies of communication are created when there is a crisis or a major event clearly requiring communication issues to be resolved. Most companies understand and appreciate the importance of creating strategic plans to drive decision making over the long term. Strategic and proper communication gives a channeling on how to deal with upheavals such as major changes in the company or organization, layoffs and downsizing, and technological change. The idea is that the companies cannot organize organizational resources without knowing where the organization wants to be and how it will get there, hence effective communication is a key factor to consider. This paper sought to establish the relationship between strategic decision making, the organizational performance and the role of strategic communication on the relationship. The paper adopted a qualitative research design and used secondary data. A critique on previous studies done by scholars. A significant relationship between strategic decision-makings and organization performance was established. The paper revealed that strategic decision-makings and organization performance will be incorporated as such decision support system these factors will be the catalyst between strategic decision-makings and organization performance. The paper recommended that responsible managers should be geared towards facing and tackling the challenges of strategic communication like poor authority structure, lack of coordination and support from other management levels and resistance from lower levels and poor planning activities in order to realize better performance. The Role of Internal Communication in Start-ups: State of Research and Practical Approaches

ABSTRACT Start-ups differ from established organizations in having limited routines and undergoing constant change that shapes their communicative structures. Although they are dependent on successful internal communication, its importance as a strategic discipline seems underestimated in practice. In addition, research on internal communication in start-ups has so far only focused on several sub-areas. In this article, internal communication is, in a first step, defined as a subdiscipline of strategic communication and elaborated on from the perspective of the Four Flows Model in order to allow a holistic view on internal communication. Secondly, we ask what role is attributed to strategic internal communication in start-ups across different stages of development in academic research and practice. Answers are provided through a multi-method design consisting of a systematic literature review in the fields of strategic communication, business management, and entrepreneurship, and 12 guided interviews with representatives of start-ups. Although both literature and interviewees identify internal communication as crucial to the success of start-ups, it mainly results from routine and is rarely strategically derived or evaluated. This study provides a more detailed insight into the role of strategic communication in start-ups, to which further studies can refer in order to fill the research gaps discussed.

Communication measurement and evaluation 
 – Goal-orientation, agility or fumbling in the dark?
 The interest of organizations in assessing stakeholder relationships and expectations, intangible assets, and social impact has grown strongly in the 21st century. This change is linked to new views on the strategic role of communication and strategic management. We examine the development and current state of the measurement and evaluation (M&E) of communication through research literature and empirical material. We suggest that the models of M&E used in organizations can also tell us about their views of strategic communication and the connection to organizational strategy. Present practices of M&E are dominated by logical models as well as summative evaluation, which are connected with a functionalist view of strategic communication. The data also provide indications of agile evaluation. Many organizations also engage in practices that we call blind measurement: metrics are not directly linked to the goals of communication.

The wisdom of reviewing corporations, which execute strategic programs of corporate sustainability, as an important actor of political communications in postindustrial society is justified in the article. The basic features of corporate sustainability, corporate social responsibility, and corporate citizenship concepts, the role of strategic communications under international ESG-discourse are outlined. The comparative analyses of Russian companies, participating Global Compact Network, social investments during COVID-19 pandemic is based on case studies, transparent nonfinancial reporting, and expert interviews. Social projects and programs of X5 Retail Group, Severstal’, Norilsk Nikel, United Metallurgic Company were studied. These companies’ basic business activities were established in industrial society. As the result of the research, based on process sociology (N. Elias), mediatization (A. Hepp), and communicative rationality (Ju. Habermas) approaches, the role of corporate citizens in communicative figurations of the network society formation and their subjectivity in political communications acquiring. The focus is made on COVID-19 pandemic influence on communication infrastructures with the studied companies’ stakeholders transformation.

Debating Glyphosate: A Macro Perspective on the Role of Strategic Communication in Forming and Monitoring A Global Issue Arena Using Inductive Topic Modelling

ABSTRACT Stakeholders debate issues of public interest in global online issue arenas, but political decision makers decide on these macro issues at national and supranational levels. A better understanding of the role of organizations in forming and monitoring such issue debates is necessary, given the influence of public affairs activities and media debates on politicians’ and public opinion. However, such a macro perspective is largely missing. This study analyzes the debate around the use of the pesticide glyphosate when the European Union decided on a license renewal in 2017. To uncover emerging salient topics and their relations with organizations, the online global coverage of the issue from the GDELT database (N = 1677) was analyzed using inductive automated content analysis (LDA topic modeling). Only three topics were salient in the arena, most prominently the carcinogenicity of glyphosate, thereby sidelining other relevant aspects. Furthermore, online issue arenas reach globally and are converged communicative spaces where a variety of media participate. Thus, the article develops and tests a typology of online news media for issue arena research. Advancing theory on organizations’ roles and strategies in these online issue arenas, a new classification of actors based on their visibility and communication strategy is proposed.

Promoting the creation of R&D intentions in primary healthcare measured by a validated instrument

BackgroundPrimary healthcare has a long and successful patient care history in Sweden. Nevertheless, a research-oriented attitude has been more or less absent in this context. In society today, access to information has significantly influenced the nature of patients’ demand for up-to-date healthcare. A prerequisite for this new demand is health professionals who are interested in novel ways of thinking and view a change of work practices as necessary. One way to achieve this goal is by means of strategic communication, which is a relatively new interdisciplinary field. The aim of this study was to analyse the role of strategic communication in the creation of intentions in Research and Development (R&D) among primary healthcare staff as measured by a validated instrument.MethodsAn intervention study on staff was performed. A 15-item questionnaire was validated and implemented. All primary healthcare staff from the southwestern Swedish province of Halland were included. In total, 846 employees (70%) agreed to participate in the measurements. After 12 years, 352 individuals who had participated in the intervention and remained in the organisation were identified and followed up. The intervention comprised established communication channels. The measurements were performed after 7 and 12 years. A questionnaire was designed for this purpose. The questions were validated by a factor analysis, and the degree of reliability was measured with Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. χ2 and Fisher’s exact tests were used as statistical tests in comparisons.ResultsFactor analysis identified five pure factors (most Cronbach’s alpha > 0.70). Strategic communication contributed to a significant improvement in the staff members’ interest in R&D and willingness to change in both the short (P < 0.05) and long (P < 0.05) term. The positive attitude was stable over time.ConclusionsStrategic communication seems to be a significant tool for creating a stable positive attitude towards R&D in the primary healthcare context. The creation of a positive attitude towards a scientific approach is a relevant finding that deserves special attention in a context as complex as healthcare. Using a validated instrument seems to contribute to pure results in this case.

Public Relations in the public sector. The role of strategic communication in the italian public administration

Purpose of the paper : The aim of this study is to examine the level of strategic management of public administrations and information and communication programs by public communication officers in Italy. Methodology : The study is quantitative in nature. It was constructed according to the findings of the Excellence Project in Public Relations and thus applies a research instrument similar to that used in other international scholarly investigations in public relations. The population comprises civil servants working in information and communication activities for Italian public administrations. Findings : The majority of public communication officers in the Italian public administration are not involved in the strategic management of public administrations but rather contribute to operational activities. They report directly to the senior manager of their department/unit and they use a mixed model of public relations. Research limitations : Due to a lack of information on the exact number of public communication officers working in the Italian public administration and a too small number of respondents in one of the respondent groups, it is not possible to draw inferences or general conclusions from the findings. The study also suffers from the limits of a quantitative research approach, which provides less elaborate accounts of public communication officers’ perceptions of the strategic role of communication in the public sector. Originality/value of paper : This study contributes to the existing knowledge on strategic public relations and public communication by offering a specific analysis of the strategic management of information and communication programs in the Italian public administration.

Purpose This paper aims to highlight the growing role of strategic communication in cross-border M&amp;A in helping companies meet market expectations and investor confidence. Design/methodology/approach Viewpoint. Findings When all of the elements about a corporation that can possibly be compiled and projected and understood by the financial community, then that company can expect to compete successfully in the capital markets. Originality/value Communicating the value of R&amp;D programs and their short/term goals has not been extensively covered for the biotechnology sector.

The Role of Strategic Communication in Hospitality Industry “The Case of Antalya”

The success of organizations depends on various factors such as effective organizational structure, well-defined roles and responsibilities and the structure and process of communication within the organization. As one of the determinants of success in tourism establishments as well as all types of other organizations, communication is the fundamental condition which enables coordination of organizational functioning. In tourism management literature, however, this topic is observed not to be adequately dealt with. Therefore, this article aims to contribute to tourism management literature. Another purpose of the article, on the other hand, is to analyze the communication process between managers and employees of tourism establishments on a strategic dimension. Data was gathered through questionnaires implemented at the 5-star hotels located in Antalya, since Antalya is one of the most important destinations in Turkey, attracting the highest numbers of tourists. Data was subjected to explanatory factor analysis in order to identify the dimensional structure of communication. Then, regression analysis was conducted in order to identify relationships between the variables. Results of the study suggested that there was a positive link between strategic communication dimension and operational effectiveness, as well as increased overall effectiveness of the organization and better internal operational qualities of separate departments.

CCOs’ Strategic Role in Large Italian Companies = El papel del Dircom en las grandes organizaciones italianas

This study explores the extant state of art of Public Relations and Corporate Communication as profession in Italy. More specifically it aims to evaluate to what extent large organizations in Italy attribute strategic value to the function of communication, with a particular focus on the degree of its institutionalization and the strategic contribution provided by Italian CCOs to organizational competitiveness and success. To this end, an inquiry was conducted via a quantitative survey that addressed and outlined Communication department features and CCOs’ profile in 300 largest organizations operating in Italy. According to our findings, PR function has established itself within organizational structure, and Italian CCOs have become increasingly involved in strategic organizational decision processes. In their role CCOs serve as strategic advisors to CEOs and other Chief Officers. Additionally, within the most innovative organizations, communication seems to play an extremely pivotal role and is exemplified by CCOs’ high level of involvement in decision-making process. Our study allows us to outline a precise description of current trends within large organizations in Italy in terms of communication function and its role. Thereby the study underlines weaknesses and strengths of Italian CCOs’ role as well as it pinpoints areas that need improvement. Furthermore this study enriches the stream of research concerning institutionalization of PR and strategic communication as well as it provides practitioners and scholars with precise insights into the strategic role of communication and its link with innovation.

Communication: a strategic lever for innovative organizations

Purpose of the study . This paper investigates the current state of public relations profession in Italy. More precisely we aimed at evaluating both the degree of institutionalization of PR in Italian organizations and the strategic role played by Italian CCOs within the organizational hierarchy. Methodology . Based on an extensive survey of 185 Chief Communication Officers (CCO) of Italian top organizations, we conducted an inquiry into Italian CCOs’ profile and we analyzed the state of development of PR function. Findings . Our findings reveal that PR has established itself as a key corporate function and Italian CCOs are getting more and more involved in strategic organizational processes. The highest degree of involvement is found in the most innovative organizations. Practical implications . Our study has provided a glance into the current state of strategic communication in Italy. In particular it has uncovered strengths, weaknesses and pitfalls in Italian communication practice, highlighting both areas of excellence and rooms for potential improvement. In that, our paper contributes to the development of the debate on institutionalization of public relations and strategic communication. Originality of the study . This study provides practitioners and scholars with insights into the strategic role of communication and its link with innovation.
