Aeronautical Infrastructure Optimization to Enhance the Strategic and Operational Business Performance of Small Airports

Airport business management literature commonly evaluates the performance of these organizations based on the number of passengers and cargo processed, aircraft movements, number of runways, number of employees, and passengers’ terminal dimension, among other factors concerning commercial aviation, commonly applied to large structures, with gaps being identified in the literature of small airports. The identification and analysis of the main factors that interfere with the performance of airport business, and the strategic and operational management of small public airports have been analyzed from 24 small Brazilian airports. The study employed the Data Envelopment Analysis method based on the Charnes, Cooper, and Rhodes model, as well as the Banker, Charnes, and Cooper model, adapted for Visual Basic Analysis. The main results demonstrate that infrastructural characteristics, such as runway width, pavement classification number, runway length, buldings' age, maximum take-off weight of the critical aircraft, passenger terminal size, and air cargo and passengers processed, show significant relevance to the operational performance of small airports. The main theoretical implications of the study are the definition of strategic and operational parameters that impact the performance of small airports, which can be used as a reference by air transport decision-makers.

Nurturing as a Masculinity-Femininity Dimension and Performance of Multinational Corporations in Uganda

This paper examined the influence of nurturing as a masculinity-femininity dimension on performance of multinational corporations (MNCs) in Uganda. Specifically, it focused on aspects of nurturing that included relationship building and negotiations as key attributes to strategic business performance. The justification for this study was that MNCs in Uganda were under-performing given that they were finding it difficult to continue running their businesses profitably to the extent that some decided to close down. A cross-sectional research design that relied on quantitative approach was employed involving 50 participants who filled in a questionnaire. Two methods of analysis involved simple regression analysis and a multiple regression analysis. Results revealed that both relationship building and negotiations had significant positive influence on performance of MNCs in Uganda. In particular, poor work relationship building and work negotiations among MNCs’ employees contributed to poor performance of MNCs in Uganda. The study recommends MNCs to align their strategic vision and mission towards nurturing to instilling employee work relationship building and negotiations toward achieving the objectives of the MNCs.

Innovation-oriented supply chain integration for structural flexibility and strategic business performance

PurposeInnovation has become extremely important, especially concerning manufacturing firms, as it is known to foster robust and healthy competition. The study aims to examine the effect of innovation orientation and supply chain integration on structural flexibility and strategic business performance.Design/methodology/approachUsing the quantitative approach, 315 questionnaires were distributed to manufacturing firms in three cities (Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi) in Ghana out of which 305 usable responses were retrieved. The partial least square structural equation modeling technique and the statistical package for social sciences software version 27 were used for the data analysis.FindingsThe findings showed that supply chain integration and innovation orientation have a strong beneficial association. A substantial favorable association between structural flexibility and supply chain integration was found in the study once more. What is more, the research revealed a strong positive relationship between supply chain integration and strategic business performance. Furthermore, the study found a strong relation between innovation orientation and strategic business performance.Originality/valueThe research paper adds to the body of knowledge by examining how supply chain integration affects the relationship between innovation orientation, structural flexibility and strategic business performance.

Promoting Strategic Flexibility and Business Performance through Organizational Ambidexterity

The purpose of this paper is to develop a comprehensive structural model to understand the outcomes of organizational ambidexterity (OA) within the manufacturing and service sector. It focuses on evaluating the effects of OA on business performance and strategic flexibility while also exploring the under-researched relationship between strategic flexibility and business performance. To accomplish this objective, an empirical survey was carried out among a sample of 370 Greek manufacturing and service firms. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were utilized to extract and validate the latent constructs examined. Finally, the structural relationships among these latent constructs were determined using structural equation modeling (SEM). The study’s findings reveal the significant contributions of OA to both firm performance and strategic flexibility. Additionally, the results demonstrate the positive influence of strategic flexibility on business performance. This research sheds light on the multifaceted impacts of ambidexterity, offering valuable implications for managers, decision-makers, and practitioners. The outcomes underscore the importance of ambidexterity in various dimensions of business performance and highlight its role in fostering strategic flexibility. This study stands out by offering a holistic model that explicates the outcomes of OA within the manufacturing and service sector. It places particular emphasis on the interplay between business performance and strategic flexibility, an area that has received limited attention in prior research. By empirically examining these relationships and providing practical guidelines, the proposed model enriches our understanding of ambidexterity’s significance and supports further research in this domain within organizations.

A conceptual framework of total quality management on innovation performance in the banking sector

PurposeThe “United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal” 9 seeks to “… foster innovation” in all sectors of an economy. Thus, this conceptual piece addresses the indirect effect of innovative behaviour (INB) between total quality management (TQM) and innovation performance (INP). It further explores the context-contingent effect of four external factors [government regulation (GOV), market dynamism (MKD), competitive intensity (CMP) and technological turbulence (TUR)] on the TQM–INB linkage.Design/methodology/approachBy incorporating both theoretical and empirical works in the fields of strategic management, innovation and business performance, this conceptual piece constructs a conceptual model, using a systematic literature review, alongside suppositions that can be tested in further studies.FindingsThis conceptual piece puts forward that TQM will be favourably connected to INP, and this favourable association will be mediated by INB. Moreover, GOV, MKD, CMP and TUR will have a favourable context-contingent effect on the favourable direct connection between TQM and INB.Research limitations/implicationsThis conceptual piece affords suggestions for both practitioners and researchers alike in the areas of innovative and strategic decision-making in banking establishments for reinforcing INP by introducing TQM, INB, GOV, MKD, CMP and TUR as innovative-strategic tools. It also delivers suggestions for forthcoming academics to examine this conceptual piece, empirically, in diverse banking sites worldwide.Practical implicationsPractical lessons for managers, employees, customers and consultants within the banking sector for the superior advantage of all key stakeholders are deliberated.Originality/valueThis study provides a new model to demonstrate how TQM leads to INP by passing through INB of employees, and how TQM fosters INB under diverse degrees of GOV, MKD, CMP and TUR. It shows how internal factors (7 TQM dimensions) and external factors (GOV, MKD, CMP and TUR) interact to foster employee INB. It also underscores the theoretical authority of three theories utilised, both individually and in combination, by using them to explain new relationships.

Analyzing the Leading Role of High-Performance Work System towards Strategic Business Performance

HPWS is currently perceived as potential source of the competitive skills, capabilities and knowledge of human resources. This study aim to illustrate how high-performance work systems (HPWS) offer the foundation for strategic business performance (SBP) through the mediating function of organizational flexibility and contextualizing manufacturing firms of developing countries by providing an empirically tested framework for analyzing SBP. The current study is based on a quantitative research design. Data were gathered from manufacturing firms from the top, middle and operational management firms. SEM was used to analyze our 589 samples. Findings revealed that HPWS is the only component aiding manufacturing firms’ growth. The results illustrate that HPWS will take a long time to achieve SBP if organisational flexibility does not mediate the relationship between HPWS and SBP. Utilizing actual data, this study reveals practical strategies for enhancing the mechanism of business development performance among manufacturing organizations. Furthermore, this research helps to understand the relationship between HPWS and organizational flexibility in attaining SBP.

Dynamic market complexity and service value advantage: an empirical investigation of business process management

PurposeHaving complexity theory as the overarching conceptual rationale, this paper presents a research model that defines external drivers, strategic and internal business practices and performance outcomes in service firm contexts.Design/methodology/approachUsing an original survey instrument, the authors empirically examine business process management (1) adopting the mediating roles of shared goal practices and technology imperative practices (2) involving moderating roles of competitive market environments and joint implementation practices.FindingsIn response to dynamic market complexity, firms implement business process management through shared goal practices and technology imperative practices for achieving customer service outcomes. The findings also suggest the moderating roles of competitive pressure and joint implementation practices.Research limitations/implicationsGeneralizations here are limited to service firms. Increasing customer service expectations (e.g. simplicity, convenience, visual images and rapid responses) require firms to involve cross-functional work throughout their organizational processes.Practical implicationsIn digital environments, business process management requires socio-technological synergy through shared goal practices and technology imperative practices.Originality/valueBuilding on a theory-driven research model, a survey instrument provides tools to examine business process management of service firms that sense dynamic market complexity challenges and translate them to achieve desirable customer service outcomes.

The influence of leadership on strategic flexibility and business performance: the mediating role of talent management

PurposeThe aim of this paper is to determine whether leadership affects strategic flexibility and business performance taking into consideration the mediating role of talent management in these relationships.Design/methodology/approachThe proposed framework is tested by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and finally structural equation modeling (SEM), using the survey data from 462 Greek firms. The mediation effect of talent management was tested by the Sobel test.FindingsThe results show that leadership drives firms to strategic flexibility and business performance, but the introduction of talent management fully mediates these relationships. Strategic flexibility also affects business performance positively.Research limitations/implicationsThis study explores a formal style of leadership; many leadership styles remain unexplored. The field of talent management is in urgent need of more empirical research to explain its importance and how talent management is handled in the 21st-century.Practical implicationsThis study proves that managers should invest more in talent management; outstanding talent can be leveraged to implement the best operational practices while managers' motivation for talent management contributes to a deeper anchoring of strategic flexibility and performance efforts in firms.Originality/valueThe current state of knowledge of both theory and practice for critical organizational factors such as strategic flexibility and talent management will be extended.

Development of Entrepreneurial Competencies and Business Performance in SMEs: Between Government Support and Empowerment of Malaysian Women Entrepreneurs

The important aspect of business performance among women-owned SMEs in Malaysia is scarce and still underperformed. Hence, Malaysian SMEs needs to empower the entrepreneurial competencies among women-owned entrepreneurs and the support of Malaysian government. In this study, the questionnaire survey has been selected as the data collection method for this research. A total of 116 responses from the women-owned entrepreneur in Malaysia were obtained and analysis was carried out using Smart PLS software to generate findings. The results reveal that strategic competencies, opportunity competencies and conceptual competencies have significantly impacted the business performance of women-owned entrepreneurs among SMEs in Malaysia. The moderating effect of government support on the relationship between strategic competencies, opportunity competencies and business performance proved to be significant. Surprisingly, the interaction of government support between conceptual competencies and business performance is not supported in the findings. Hence, the current paper will further provide a women-owned SME with substantial information to focus on fostering entrepreneurial competencies within their respective companies to ensure peak business performance. Findings from this study anticipated being extremely useful to the Malaysian government, in specific Policy Makers. With these results, authorities will be better informed when implementing new strategies and programmes to enhance the skills of entrepreneurs, which will result in better business performance.

Managing Eco-Friendly Strategy Implementation and Its Impacts on Business Performance: The Role of Organizational Strategic Capabilities

The increasing movements on the implementation of environmental sustainability and its impact on business performance become one of the important discussions on the strategic management field. Organizations are forced to major environmental initiatives to answer the green business inquiries. Constructed from the organizational capabilities literature of strategic management, this study explains how organizations strengthen their performances toward the implementation of environmentaly friendly or also called as ecofriendly business strategy and proposes hypotheses to answer the questions on how the organizational capabilities that represents internal organizational factors affect business performance through the mediating effect of eco-friendly strategy implementation Using a model integrating resource-based theory, institutional theory, and strategic business unit perspectives, this study tests the causalities upon the hotel industry in Indonesia which currently facing the force to adopt environmental friendly business practices due to the expansive development within the industry. This study used SPSS software followed by mediation test to analyze the mediating effect of eco-friendly strategy implementation on the relationship between organizational strategic capabilities and business performance. Research data were collected through the questionnaires, resulting 109 data from two-starred and above hotels across major cities in Indonesia. The findings of this study indicate that organizational strategic capabilities have a positive and significant effect on eco-friendly strategy implementation and business performances respectively while the mediating effect of Eco-friendly strategy implementation were partially found.Drawing from these results, the implications of the findings upon industrial, policies, and further research avenues are discussed.

Impact of Strategic Management Practices on the Business Performance of SMEs in Pakistan

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Pakistan are playing a significant role in the economic development, and performance of these SMEs is very crucial to the country. Therefore, the aim of current research is to check the significance of strategic management practices in the SMEs operating in the South Punjab of Pakistan. Three variables were created from the existing literature (strategy development,strategy implementation, and strategy evaluation). Convenient sampling has been used to collect primary data through self-administrative questionnaires. By exercising different Inferential Statistical Techniques, this paper has found a significant link between all the strategic management functions and business performance of selected SMEs in the South Punjab of Pakistan.For this purpose, IBM SPSS Statistics software has been applied.This research has recommended that owners as well as management of SMEs should regularly evaluate and take corrective measures on schedule and the progress of various strategies.

The Impact of E-Marketing on Business Performance in Northern Malaysia

This research is to investigate the impact of e-marketing on business performance in Northern Malaysia. This research will investigate the impact of e-marketing on business performance towards e-marketing orientation, perceived relative advantage, customer pressure and level of competition. The target respondent for this research are SMEs companies and entrepreneur with companies. Furthermore, the questionnaires were distributed through online by using simple random sampling technique. In result, 30 set of questionnaires were collected to see whether all the impact of e-marketing on business performance. This research will be analysed by using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 25. SPSS will be using to conduct descriptive analysis, frequency analysis, correlation analysis, reliability test and multiple regression analysis. Additionally, this research shows the result which independent variable that consists e-marketing orientation, perceived relative advantage, customer pressure and level of competition has no positive relationship between strategic business performance. Meanwhile, independent variable for convenience shows that there is a positive relationship towards dependent variable. Moreover, this research shows the clearer overview regarding the impact of e-marketing towards strategic business performance. Lastly, the limitation on doing this research were identified and implication for further research were recommended.

Analisis Penerapan Manajemen Strategik dan Pengaruhnya terhadap Kinerja Usaha

This research was conducted to determine the degree of implementation of Strategic Management and the level of MSME (Miicro. Small, and Medium Enterprise) business performance in the Batik, Craft and Furniture sector in Probolinggo District, East Java and to examine the relationship between Strategic Management Application and Business Performance. The population of this research is the MSMEs of the Batik, Craft and Furniture sectors in Probolinggo District with a purposive sampling method, and those who meet the requirements of 30 samples. The method used is a survey through a questionnaire to find out primary data of degrees in the Implementation of Strategic Management and secondary data on business performance. To test the relationship between variables, a statistical test was carried out using the linear regression method with the SPSS tool. The results showed that the degree of implementation of Strategic Management and Business Performance of respondents was included in the medium category. Statistical test results show that there is a positive and significant effect of the Implementation of Strategic Management on Business Performance. The results of this study should be input for stakeholders in an effort to improve the competence of MSMEs in dealing with business competition.

The significance of strategic management accounting on the performance of transport businesses in Nigeria

The study provided that strategic management accounting is related to the provisions and use of accounting information by people in the organization such as the management and the managers, to make business decisions that would enhance competitive advantage and effective control of the firm's activity. The major purpose of this study is to investigate the significance of the strategic role of strategic management accounting in realizing the better performance of transport businesses in Nigeria. The study generated data from 230 transport businesses in Nigeria through a cross-sectional questionnaire survey approach using drop and pick means of data distribution. The findings revealed that factors such as information, people, and government policy are significant factors impacting the performance of the transport business. Hence, it was suggested that the factors are essential in realizing the performance of transport businesses. Also, the findings reveal that technology has a significant effect on the performance of transport businesses, and revealed the relationship between strategic management accounting and business performance. It is pertinent to note that this study would be of advantage to all transport business owners and researchers as it would give a plausible guideline for taking vibrant decisions concerning business performance, and will be a basis for future research. Based on the findings, it is therefore concluded that information, people, government policy, and technology are the significant factors necessary to induce the efficient performance of the transport business in Nigeria.

Strategic business performance through network capability and structural flexibility

PurposeThe present study aims to develop a strategic business performance (SBP) model for larger firms by examining the mediating role of structural flexibility in the network capability–SBP link, as well as testing the moderating role of entrepreneurial orientation in the relationship between structural flexibility and SBP.Design/methodology/approachData were collected from 929 senior managers/owners of large textile sector firms operating in Pakistan. Regression and bootstrapping techniques were used to test the proposed relationships.FindingsThe results revealed that network capability positively shapes firms' structural flexibility, which, in turn, helps firms achieve SBP. The present work also showed that entrepreneurial orientation strengthens the positive relationship between structural flexibility and SBP.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is based on the cross-sectional data, and data were collected from the textile sector firms operating in Pakistan.Practical implicationsThe findings suggest that managers should focus on developing firms' network capability, which positively shapes structural flexibility and helps firms achieve SBP. Entrepreneurial orientation can also play an imperative role for strengthening the link between structural flexibility and SBP.Originality/valueThe value of the present work rests on the deeper understanding of the network capability–SBP link that it offered by examining the relationships of the network capability dimensions with SBP through structural flexibility. Moreover, by bringing to the fore firms' entrepreneurial orientation as a moderator of the structural flexibility–SBP relationship, the study provided a new vantage point to uncover the complexities involved in the links between network capability, structural flexibility, and SBP.

Towards Strategic Business Performance of the Hospitality Sector: Nexus of ICT, E-Marketing and Organizational Readiness

Purpose: This study aims to present a strategic business performance (SBP) model for firms operating in the hospitality industry by providing them guidance on how to use information and communication technologies (ICTs) and e-marketing to attain strategic performance. This paper also explores the moderating role of organizational readiness in the relationship between ICT and e-marketing. Methodology: Data were collected from the top, middle, and operational managers in 4-star and 5-star hotels. To test the mediating role of e-marketing in the relationship between ICT and SBP, Preacher and Hayes’s (2008) approach was used along with the bootstrap method. Regression analysis was carried out to examine the moderating role of organizational readiness. Findings: ICTs provide opportunities to execute e-marketing activities for achieving competitiveness. The empirical findings proved that the use of ICTs provides a basis for establishing a successful e-marketing mechanism that helps hotels to achieve SBP. Furthermore, ICTs’ influence on e-marketing is strengthened by organizational readiness. Originality/value: This paper adds to previous literature on ICTs, SBP, and e-marketing by examining the role of e-marketing and ICTs in positively contributing to the hotels’ SBP, which is a broader measure of firms’ business performance, as compared to the traditional financial or operational measures of a firm’s performance. Since previous studies on the links between ICTs, e-marketing, and firm performance are based on conventional measures of firm performance, this study offers new insights into the nexus of ICTs, e-marketing, and firm performance.

The impact of strategic networking on business performance of manufacturing SMEs operating in a predominantly service based economy

Strategic networking represents a strategic intent of the firm to develop meaningful and sustainable long-term coopetitional business relationships with various market players. Through such market relationships, the focal firm can focus on the further development of its own core competences and simultaneously garner the network benefits. The purpose of this article is to examine the role and the level of influence strategic networking has on the performance of Croatian manufacturing SMEs. The relationship between strategic networking and business performance has been further tested by looking into a set of financial and non-financial performance indicators, where moderating role of the external environment has been used to even further explore the observed relationship. Although unidimensional analysis reveals positive influence of strategic networking on business performance, that is not the case when multidimensional analysis is applied, where only the reputation among other strategic networking antecedents has a significantly positive influence. Therefore, it can be concluded that these research results are inconclusive, whether looking at the existence, strength or direction of the observed relationships, and require further research.
