The role of inter-organisational communication in the performance of strategic alliances: a relational perspective

PurposeThis study aims to determine whether inter-organisational communication, based on four communicational dimensions (willingness, behaviour, commitment and quality), influences the performance of strategic alliances.Design/methodology/approachTo achieve this objective, from a relational perspective, a qualitative approach was adopted, resorting to five small and medium-sized enterprises (SME)/cases in Portugal. Interviews with the key informants of these SMEs and documentary analysis were used to collect data.FindingsBased on the cases analysed, the results show that communication is fundamental, valued and implemented in the SMEs studied. However, this is informal communication, reflecting the cooperation established and not based on contracts. In these SMEs, communication is the basis for understanding the alliance’s objectives and their fulfilment, which creates satisfaction in the partners and the alliance’s success. Communication also allows an alliance to be maintained and develop continuously, creating bonds between the partners.Practical implicationsWithout that communication, alliance performance will not be possible. The study is relevant as it indicates management practices in strategic alliances based on inter-organisational communication, aiming for good performance. Therefore, it contributes to advancing knowledge about strategic alliances through the innovative link with inter-organisational communication and its applicability.Originality/valueThis study is new and innovative because it contributes to the literature in the area of strategic management, as it presents phenomena to do with inter-organisational communication and its relation with strategic alliances in SMEs, as well as advancing knowledge about the relational perspective. In addition, the application and development of inter-organisational communication, in all its communicational dimensions, are the basis for maintaining alliances over time and their performance.

This research seeks to evaluate the efficacy and efficiency of clinical-trial strategic partnerships by examining their connections to the country's regulatory agencies. The country's formal institutions, i.e. its defined norms, are what ultimately govern the behaviour of social actors. A strategic alliance is a voluntary, long-term cooperation arrangement between two or more independent businesses with complementary strengths and objectives in order to gain a market advantage. Organizational effectiveness and efficiency are reflected in the performance of clinical-trial strategic alliances, which are structured according to the contractual relationship and the relational capabilities of the parties to overcome challenges in the partnership's activities and ensure intercompany cooperation. This research built on a previous critical literature assessment by proposing new hypotheses on the connections between national regulatory bodies and international partnerships for testing experimental pharmaceuticals in humans.

The impacts of conditions and person-organization fit on alliances performance: And the moderating role of intermediary.

This study expects to provide a reference for the catering industry. The travel industry expands sales channels and turnover tends to choose a strategic alliance with the alliance objects mutually beneficial cooperation to improve their competitiveness. This study examines the effects of alliance conditions and person-organization fit (P-O-fit) on the performance of strategic alliances between travel industries. Furthermore, this study contained the intermediary performance as a moderator to examine the influences of alliance conditions and P-O-fit on the performance of strategic alliances. There were 406 usable questionnaires collected. We verified the hypotheses by the structural equation modeling method. The results suggest that the alliance conditions have positive and significant direct effects on the performance of strategic alliances. Moreover, the P-O-fit also has positive and significant effects on the performance of strategic alliances. Furthermore, the intermediary performance has substantial moderating effects on the influences of P-O-fit on the performance of strategic alliances. The conclusion provides a theoretical and practical basis between performance and the travel industry.

Analyzing external environmental, strategic alliance, and strategic alliance of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia firms – an empirical research

PurposeThis study investigates the effect of strategic internal critical factors on strategic alliance performance in an emerging market, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.Design/methodology/approachMultivariate statistical analysis technique Partial Least Square-Squared Equation Model is used for data analysis considering a survey of 260 alliance managers.FindingsEnvironmental complexity moderates the relationship between strategic internal critical factors and strategic performance. A significant positive effect of strategic internal critical factors on corporation strategic performance was found. It suggests that environment and strategic alliance enable alliance managers and decision-makers to translate alliance strategies and improve the overall organization’s performance outcome, productivity, efficiency, availability of a product and profitability.Practical implicationsThe findings disseminate beneficial implications for alliance managers regarding how they can best use their capability to maximize alliance performance. Realizing the antecedents of strategic alliance performance allows a manager to be sensitive about the influent factors and try to improve the alliance performance.Originality/valueThis paper shows how to create associations between interfirm coordination as a framework of new ventures for implementing radical technological change, firm performance in the post-innovation period, industry and firm innovative output.

MANAGING KNOWLEDGE EMBEDDEDNESS FOR SYNERGETIC INNOVATION PERFORMANCE IN STRATEGIC ALLIANCES: IMPLICATIONS FROM KNOWLEDGE FLOW AND STRATEGIC REACTIVENESS

Knowledge embeddedness may exert a crucial role in improving synergetic innovation performance in the knowledge economy era. However, theoretical deduction and empirical investigation on the effects of knowledge embeddedness have not yet reached a consensus. One primary reason caused this result is that the different levels of knowledge embeddedness for synergies have been neglected to examine. To provide evidence to develop strategies for improving synergetic innovation performance based on related knowledge by embedding knowledge, this paper used the 496-questionnaire data to investigate the impacts of knowledge embeddedness on synergetic innovation performance, the mediating effects of knowledge acquisition and knowledge leakage, and the moderating effect of strategic reactiveness. We found that knowledge embeddedness played an inverted U-shaped role in synergetic innovation performance in strategic alliances, whereas it had positive effects on knowledge acquisition and knowledge leakage. Two specific knowledge flow behaviours, knowledge acquisition and knowledge leakage exerted inverted U-shaped impacts on synergetic innovation performance. In addition, they had partial mediating effects between knowledge embeddedness and synergetic innovation performance. Moreover, strategic reactiveness positively moderated the relationship between knowledge embeddedness and synergetic innovation performance. Our results supplemented reliable empirical evidence to promote the development of embeddedness and knowledge management literature.

Organizational behavior in international strategic alliances and the relation to performance – a literature review and avenues for future research

This paper presents a systematic literature review of the research on behavioral factors influencing the performance of international strategic alliances. After capturing the relevance of the research field, we observe the distribution of publications and derive quantitative metrics. Further, we focus on the terms related to alliance performance used in this research domain. Then, the results regarding the behavioral factors of influence on the individual, group-related and organizational level and their relation to alliance performance are stated. Our analysis ascertains that some factors are present on at least two behavioral levels and are understood differently on each level, leading to a certain multidimensionality. Therefore, we develop a categorization that cross all behavioral levels based on four broad categories: relational factors, learning and knowledge, conflict, and other (unrelated) factors. Based on this analysis, we identify avenues for future research. Beside methodological needs for research, gaps concerning the multidimensionality we recognized and various influencing factors are identified, as ambiguous results are apparent or other factors have been scarcely analyzed so far.

Investigating the Role of Alliance Knowledge Learning and Institutional Isomorphism in Strategic Alliance Performance of Green Supply Chain

As the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic disordered the majority of all global supply chains, alliance knowledge learning played a fundamental function during the crisis. This paper aims to identify the relationships of both alliance green knowledge learning and institutional processes with the alliance performance of the green supply chain. It also specifies the mechanism by which Institutional isomorphism affects green innovation performance, through alliance institutional processes and further to increase their competitive advantage in the global market. Data were collected with questionnaires distributed to Taiwanese companies that are listed on the stock market which produced 242 usable responses for the analysis, both multiple regression analyses and SEM were used to test the hypotheses. Our results showed that the majority of our hypotheses were supported, which is similar to the existing literature. The outcomes imply that institutionalization processes and alliance green knowledge sharing play salient functions in firm alliance performance while implemented in the context of green supply chain management. Furthermore, the results indicate that the concept of institutionalization and isomorphism are relevant and Mimetic pressures were found to be the most significant in both internal and external green SCM practices, while also providing instructive managerial implications through empirical evidence.

Determinants of alliance productivity and performance: evidence from the automobile industry

PurposeThis study aims to identify critical factors and examine their impact on alliance performance from an organizational learning point of view.Design/methodology/approachA modified total interpretive structural modeling (M-TISM) methodology was used in this study. The different paths/links in the developed M-TISM model were further validated by using the Mahindra-Ford alliance case study.FindingsIn this study, a total of seven critical factors were identified using an extensive literature review, and a hierarchical model was developed. Results show that prior alliance experience, inter-partner learning, knowledge transfer, absorptive capacity and knowledge internalization have a positive on the alliance productivity and performance. Furthermore, the findings indicate that prior alliance experience remains essential for alliance productivity and performance, while knowledge transfer and absorptive capacity can contribute to inter-partner learning and knowledge internalization in strategic alliances.Research limitations/implicationsThis study can help managers and policymakers to understand the identified critical factors from an organizational learning perspective and understand their impact on the alliance performance in a competitive environment. The managers should know that previous alliance experience, learning from partner firms, building an absorptive capacity, etc., are necessary to achieve superior alliance productivity and performance. For academicians, the M-TISM methodology used in this study can provide a mechanism to perform exploratory research and build a hierarchical model in different management research fields.Originality/valueThe study fills research gaps by identifying key factors, developing a hierarchical model, and examining their impact on the performance of strategic alliances in the Indian automotive industry.

ANALYSIS OF THE PERFORMANCE DETERMINANTS OF THE ALLIANCE STRATEGY EMPIRICAL STUDY ON LEARNING GUIDANCE IN DKI JAKARTA

The alliance strategy is one solution to the speed of competition in the business or business world. Strategic alliances are cooperative strategies in the form of partnerships that help unify each party's strengths to mutually benefit in the form of benefits and long-term competitiveness in the market. The alliance's strategy can be assessed as successful or not by measuring the strategic alliance's performance because the most commonly used alliance measure is performance. Whether or not an alliance strategy adopted by a company is healthy is to evaluate its alliance strategy's implementation.
 This research was conducted using non-sampling or census methods as many as 132 (one hundred and thirty-two) branches in DKI Jakarta in one of the companies in the education sector originating from Japan and developing an alliance strategy in Indonesia. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire and met with the owners or direct branch leaders.
 From this study, it is concluded that Goodwill trust, Competence Trust, and Tangible & Intangible Resources Sharing positively influence the performance of the alliance strategy. Also, Tangible & Intangible Resources Sharing as an intervening variable can mediate the relationship between Goodwill trust and Competence Trust on the alliance's strategy's performance.

A Moderated Mediation Model Linking Entrepreneurial Orientation to Strategic Alliance Performance

AbstractThis study examines how and when entrepreneurial orientation (EO) enhances alliance performance by considering knowledge integration as a critical mediator and bonding as an important contingency of the mediation effect. We test this moderated mediation framework using a sample of 410 alliance firms (based on a total of 820 respondents). Our results show that knowledge integration fully mediates the relationship between EO and alliance performance and that this indirect effect is stronger at a high level of bonding. Overall, we contribute to the entrepreneurship literature by revealing how firms translate their EO‐based strategies into positive alliance outcomes through knowledge integration and when this indirect effect is most effective.

Analysis of scientific production on strategic alliances in the period 1980-2018

This study takes an integrated approach of quantitative and qualitative studies to understand and analyze the scientific research published on strategic alliances between 1980 and 2018 in the Web of Science database and to reveal the evolution of themes in this area. The quantitative study adopts bibliometric techniques based on citation and co-occurrence analyses of keywords. The qualitative study includes a content analysis of the articles carried out to discover the content of the most cited articles on strategic alliances. The results show that research on strategic alliances has evolved over the period 1980 and 2018, moving from a stream of research focused on the motivations for forming and structuring strategic alliances in the period 1980-1995, from another stream focused on the learning, performance and failure of strategic alliances in the period 1995 and 2001 to a new stream characterized by the emergence of new terms such as absorptive capacity with a strong emphasis on the management and transfer of knowledge within strategic alliances.

Interplay between Cognition and Design: How Performance of Strategic Alliance with Different Design Affected by Cognitive Capabilities

While extant literature has shown that formal contracts and relational governance are at play in strategic alliances design, surprisingly little is known about the prerequisites of administration within these organisational structures to reach to their potential benefits. Alliances' administration needs not only functional but also cognitive capabilities. To deeper understand of relationship between managerial cognition and alliance design, current study was employed the concept of cognitive capability and relationships between psychological underpinnings of cognitive capability and performance of alliances with contractual or relational design were studied. Using OLS regression analysis, the empirical models comprised of perception, attention, problem-solving, communication and social cognition are designed to explain the role of cognitive capability in performance of strategic alliances with contractual and relational designs. Results provide a clear understanding of the importance of cognitive capability in alliances' design and show how these psychological underpinnings fuel alliances' performance in contractual and relational governance's.
