Examining the Impact of Assimilating Surface, PBL, and Free Atmosphere Observations from TORUS on Analyses and Forecasts of Two Supercells on 8 June 2019

Abstract This study describes data-denial experiments conducted to examine the impact of assimilating subsets of data from the TORUS project on storm-scale ensemble forecasts of two supercells on 8 June 2019. Assimilated data from TORUS includes mobile mesonet, UAS, and radiosonde observations. The TORUS data are divided into three spatial subsets to evaluate the importance of observing different parts of the atmosphere on forecasts of this case: the SFC subset consisting of just the near-surface mobile mesonet observations, the PBL subset consisting of UAS observations and radiosonde profiles below 762 m, and the FREE subset consisting of radiosonde profiles above 762 m. Data denial experiments are then conducted by comparing analyses and free forecasts generated using a cycled EnKF data assimilation system assimilating conventional observations, radar observations, and all of the TORUS observations at once with experiments where one of the three subsets is removed in turn as well as a control experiment assimilating only conventional and radar observations. Our results show that assimilating all of the TORUS observations at once in the ALL experiment improves the storm-scale ensemble forecasts much more often than it degrades them, and that no one subset of the TORUS data was consistently most important for improving the analyses or forecasts.

The NOAA Weather Prediction Center’s Use and Evaluation of Experimental Warn-on-Forecast System Guidance

This study examines use of experimental Warn-on-Forecast System (WoFS) guidance for short-term flash flood prediction at the NOAA Weather Prediction Center’s Meteorological Watch (Metwatch) desk. The WoFS guidance provides storm-scale ensemble forecasts for individual thunderstorms out to six hours and has previously shown great promise in its predictive skill for heavy rainfall events. Its operational utility was examined during 2019 and 2020 in a formal collaboration between Warn-on-Forecast scientists and Metwatch meteorologists. During that time, Metwatch meteorologists integrated real-time WoFS guidance into their Mesoscale Precipitation Discussion forecast processes and provided evaluations via a post-event survey. The survey queried impacts of WoFS guidance on their situational awareness, workload, and confidence, and Metwatch meteorologists also reported subjective assessments of model performance. Survey results highlighted the importance of viewing consistency in WoFS guidance across runs and agreement between WoFS guidance with conceptual models, other numerical weather prediction guidance, and observations. The use of WoFS tended to either maintain or slightly increase Metwatch meteorologists’ workload, while also increasing their confidence (notably for events perceived as better predicted). Of the different forecast attributes evaluated, Metwatch meteorologists reported convective mode as the attribute best predicted by WoFS. Use of WoFS guidance supported Mesoscale Precipitation Discussion decision making, including the placement and spatial extent of the product and the level of specificity provided about the related flash flood threat(s).

The Impact of Assimilating ZDR Observations on Storm-Scale Ensemble Forecasts of the 31 May 2013 Oklahoma Storm Event

AbstractAssimilation of dual-polarization (dual-pol) observations provides more accurate storm-scale analyses to initialize forecasts of severe convective thunderstorms. This study investigates the impact assimilating experimental sector-scan dual-pol observations has on storm-scale ensemble forecasts and how this impact changes over different data assimilation (DA) windows using the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF). Ensemble forecasts are initialized after 30, 45, and 60 minutes of DA for two sets of experiments that assimilate either reflectivity and radial velocity only (EXPZ) or reflectivity and radial velocity plus differential reflectivity (EXPZZDR). This study uses the 31 May 2013 Oklahoma event which included multiple storms that produced tornadoes and severe hail, with focus placed on two storms that impacted El Reno and Stillwater during the event.The earliest initialized forecast of EXPZZDR better predicts the evolution of the El Reno storm than EXPZ, but the two sets of experiments become similar at subsequent forecast times. However, the later EXPZZDR forecasts of the Stillwater storm, which organized towards the end of the DA window, produce improved results compared to EXPZ, in which the storm is less intense and weakens. Evaluation of forecast products for supercell mesocyclones (updraft helicity [UH]) and hail show similar results with earlier EXPZZDR forecasts better predicting the UH swaths of the El Reno storm and later forecasts producing improved UH and hail swaths for the Stillwater storm. The results indicate that the assimilation of ZDR over fewer DA cycles can produce improved forecasts when DA windows sufficiently cover storms during their initial development and organization.

Evaluation of Convection-Permitting Precipitation Forecast Products Using WRF, NMMB, and FV3 for the 2016–17 NOAA Hydrometeorology Testbed Flash Flood and Intense Rainfall Experiments

Abstract During the summers of 2016 and 2017, the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms (CAPS) ran real-time storm-scale ensemble forecasts (SSEFs) in support of the Hydrometeorology Testbed (HMT) Flash Flood and Intense Rainfall (FFaIR) experiment. These forecasts, using WRF-ARW and Nonhydrostatic Mesoscale Model on the B-grid (NMMB) in 2016, and WRF-ARW and GFDL Finite Volume Cubed-Sphere Dynamical Core (FV3) in 2017, covered the contiguous United States at 3-km horizontal grid spacing, and supported the generation and evaluation of precipitation forecast products, including ensemble probabilistic products. Forecasts of 3-h precipitation accumulation are evaluated. Overall, the SSEF produces skillful 3-h accumulated precipitation forecasts, with ARW members generally outperforming NMMB members and the single FV3 member run in 2017 outperforming ARW members; these differences are significant at some forecast hours. Statistically significant differences exist in the performance, in terms of bias and ETS, among subensembles of members sharing common microphysics and PBL schemes. Year-to-year consistency is higher for PBL subensembles than for microphysical subensembles. Probability-matched (PM) ensemble mean forecasts outperform individual members, while the simple ensemble mean exhibits substantial bias. A newly developed localized probability-matched (LPM) ensemble mean product was produced in 2017; compared to the simple ensemble mean and the conventional PM mean, the LPM mean exhibits improved retention of small-scale structures, evident in both 2D forecast fields and variance spectra. Probabilistic forecasts of precipitation exceeding flash flood guidance (FFG) or thresholds associated with recurrence intervals (RI) ranging from 10 to 100 years show utility in predicting regions of flooding threat, but generally overpredict the occurrence of such events; however, they may still be useful in subjective flash flood risk assessment.

Ensemble Sensitivity Analysis-Based Ensemble Transform with 3D Rescaling Initialization Method for Storm-Scale Ensemble Forecast

In order to further investigate the influence of ensemble generation methods on the storm-scale ensemble forecast (SSEF) system, a new ensemble sensitivity analysis-based ensemble transform with 3D rescaling (ET_3DR_ESA) method was developed. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model was used to numerically simulate a squall line that occurred in the Jianghuai region in China on 12 July 2014. In this study, initial perturbations were generated via ET_3DR_ESA, and the ensemble forecast performance was compared to that of the dynamical downscaling (Down) method and the ensemble transform with 3D rescaling (ET_3DR) method. Results from a set of experiments indicate that ET_3DR_ESA linked to multi-scale environmental fields generates initial perturbations that can not only capture analysis uncertainties, but also match the actual synoptic conditions. Such perturbations produce faster ensemble spread growth, lower root-mean-square error, and a lower percentage of outliers, especially during the peak period of the squall line. In addition, ET_3DR_ESA can effectively reduce the energy dissipation on different scales through the analysis of the power spectrum. Moreover, the intensity and distribution forecasts of heavy rainfall from the ET_3DR_ESA ensemble forecast system were demonstrated to better match the observation. Furthermore, according to results of the relative operating characteristic (ROC) test, Brier score (BS), and equitable threat score (ETS), ET_3DR_ESA significantly improved the forecast skills for heavy rain (15–30 mm/12 h) and extreme rain (>30 mm/12 h), which are critical to the realization of accurate storm-scale system precipitation forecasts. In general, these results suggest that ET_3DR_ESA can be effectively applied to SSEF systems.

Ensemble Hail Prediction for the Storms of 10 May 2010 in South-Central Oklahoma Using Single- and Double-Moment Microphysical Schemes

Explicit prediction of hail using numerical weather prediction models remains a significant challenge; microphysical uncertainties and errors are a significant contributor to this challenge. This study assesses the ability of storm-scale ensemble forecasts using single-moment Lin or double-moment Milbrandt and Yau microphysical schemes in predicting hail during a severe weather event over south-central Oklahoma on 10 May 2010. Radar and surface observations are assimilated using an ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) at 5-min intervals. Three sets of ensemble forecasts, launched at 15-min intervals, are then produced from EnKF analyses at times ranging from 30 min prior to the first observed hail to the time of the first observed hail. Forty ensemble members are run at 500-m horizontal grid spacing in both EnKF assimilation cycles and subsequent forecasts. Hail forecasts are verified using radar-derived products including information from single- and dual-polarization radar data: maximum estimated size of hail (MESH), hydrometeor classification algorithm (HCA) output, and hail size discrimination algorithm (HSDA) output. Resulting hail forecasts show at most marginal skill, with the level of skill dependent on the forecast initialization time and microphysical scheme used. Forecasts using the double-moment scheme predict many small hailstones aloft, while the single-moment members predict larger hailstones. Near the surface, double-moment members predict larger hailstone sizes than their single-member counterparts. Hail in the forecasts is found to melt too quickly near the surface for members using either of the microphysics schemes examined. Analysis of microphysical budgets in both schemes indicates that both schemes suboptimally represent hail processes, adversely impacting the skill of surface hail forecasts.

More on the Scale Dependence of the Predictability of Precipitation Patterns: Extension to the 2009–13 CAPS Spring Experiment Ensemble Forecasts

This paper analyzes the scale and case dependence of the predictability of precipitation in the Storm-Scale Ensemble Forecast (SSEF) system run by the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms (CAPS) during the NOAA Hazardous Weather Testbed Spring Experiments of 2008–13. The effect of different types of ensemble perturbation methodologies is quantified as a function of spatial scale. It is found that uncertainties in the large-scale initial and boundary conditions and in the model microphysical parameterization scheme can result in the loss of predictability at scales smaller than 200 km after 24 h. Also, these uncertainties account for most of the forecast error. Other types of ensemble perturbation methodologies were not found to be as important for the quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPFs). The case dependences of predictability and of the sensitivity to the ensemble perturbation methodology were also analyzed. Events were characterized in terms of the extent of the precipitation coverage and of the convective-adjustment time scale [Formula: see text], an indicator of whether convection is in equilibrium with the large-scale forcing. It was found that events characterized by widespread precipitation and small [Formula: see text] values (representative of quasi-equilibrium convection) were usually more predictable than nonequilibrium cases. No significant statistical relationship was found between the relative role of different perturbation methodologies and precipitation coverage or [Formula: see text].

Simulation of Polarimetric Radar Variables from 2013 CAPS Spring Experiment Storm-Scale Ensemble Forecasts and Evaluation of Microphysics Schemes

Abstract Polarimetric radar variables are simulated from members of the 2013 Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms (CAPS) Storm-Scale Ensemble Forecasts (SSEF) with varying microphysics (MP) schemes and compared with observations. The polarimetric variables provide information on hydrometeor types and particle size distributions (PSDs), neither of which can be obtained through reflectivity (Z) alone. The polarimetric radar simulator pays close attention to how each MP scheme [including single- (SM) and double-moment (DM) schemes] treats hydrometeor types and PSDs. The recent dual-polarization upgrade to the entire WSR-88D network provides nationwide polarimetric observations, allowing for direct evaluation of the simulated polarimetric variables. Simulations for a mesoscale convective system (MCS) and supercell cases are examined. Five different MP schemes—Thompson, DM Milbrandt and Yau (MY), DM Morrison, WRF DM 6-category (WDM6), and WRF SM 6-category (WSM6)—are used in the ensemble forecasts. Forecasts using the partially DM Thompson and fully DM MY and Morrison schemes better replicate the MCS structure and stratiform precipitation coverage, as well as supercell structure compared to WDM6 and WSM6. Forecasts using the MY and Morrison schemes better replicate observed polarimetric signatures associated with size sorting than those using the Thompson, WDM6, and WSM6 schemes, in which such signatures are either absent or occur at abnormal locations. Several biases are suggested in these schemes, including too much wet graupel in MY, Morrison, and WDM6; a small raindrop bias in WDM6 and WSM6; and the underforecast of liquid water content in regions of pure rain for all schemes.

Prediction of the 14 June 2010 Oklahoma City Extreme Precipitation and Flooding Event in a Multiphysics Multi-Initial-Conditions Storm-Scale Ensemble Forecasting System

AbstractProlonged heavy rainfall produced widespread flooding in the Oklahoma City area early on 14 June 2010. This event was poorly predicted by operational models; however, it was skillfully predicted by the Storm-Scale Ensemble Forecast produced by the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms as part of the Hazardous Weather Testbed 2010 Spring Experiment. In this study, the quantitative precipitation forecast skill of ensemble members is assessed and ranked using a neighborhood-based threat score calculated against the stage IV precipitation data, and Oklahoma Mesonet observations are used to evaluate the forecast skill for surface conditions. Statistical correlations between skill metrics and qualitative comparisons of relevant features for higher- and lower-ranked members are used to identify important processes. The results demonstrate that the development of a cold pool from previous convection and the movement and orientation of the associated outflow boundary played dominant roles in the event. Without assimilated radar data from this earlier convection, the modeled cold pool was too weak and too slow to develop. Furthermore, forecast skill was sensitive to the choice of microphysics parameterization; members that used the Thompson scheme produced initial cold pools that propagated too slowly, substantially increasing errors in the timing and placement of later precipitation. The results also suggest important roles played by finescale, transient features in the period of outflow boundary stalling and reorientation associated with the heaviest rainfall. The unlikelihood of a deterministic forecast reliably predicting these features highlights the benefit of using convection-allowing/convection-resolving ensemble forecast methods for events of this kind.

A Study of Multiscale Initial Condition Perturbation Methods for Convection-Permitting Ensemble Forecasts

Abstract The impacts of multiscale flow-dependent initial condition (IC) perturbations for storm-scale ensemble forecasts of midlatitude convection are investigated using perfect-model observing system simulation experiments. Several diverse cases are used to quantitatively and qualitatively understand the impacts of different IC perturbations on ensemble forecast skill. Scale dependence of the results is assessed by evaluating 2-h storm-scale reflectivity forecasts separately from hourly accumulated mesoscale precipitation forecasts. Forecasts are initialized with different IC ensembles, including an ensemble of multiscale perturbations produced by a multiscale data assimilation system, mesoscale perturbations produced at a coarser resolution, and filtered multiscale perturbations. Mesoscale precipitation forecasts initialized with the multiscale perturbations are more skillful than the forecasts initialized with the mesoscale perturbations at several lead times. This multiscale advantage is due to greater consistency between the IC perturbations and IC uncertainty. This advantage also affects the short-term, smaller-scale forecasts. Reflectivity forecasts on very small scales and very short lead times are more skillful with the multiscale perturbations as a direct result of the smaller-scale IC perturbation energy. The small-scale IC perturbations also contribute to some improvements to the mesoscale precipitation forecasts after the ~5-h lead time. Altogether, these results suggest that the multiscale IC perturbations provided by ensemble data assimilation on the convection-permitting grid can improve storm-scale ensemble forecasts by improving the sampling of IC uncertainty, compared to downscaling of IC perturbations from a coarser-resolution ensemble.

A Comparison of 36–60-h Precipitation Forecasts from Convection-Allowing and Convection-Parameterizing Ensembles

Abstract Previous studies examining convection-allowing models (CAMs), as well as NOAA/Hazardous Weather Testbed Spring Forecasting Experiments (SFEs) have typically emphasized “day 1” (12–36 h) forecast guidance. These studies find a distinct advantage in CAMs relative to models that parameterize convection, especially for fields strongly tied to convection like precipitation. During the 2014 SFE, “day 2” (36–60 h) forecast products from a CAM ensemble provided by the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms (CAPS) at the University of Oklahoma were examined. Quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPFs) from the CAPS ensemble, known as the Storm Scale Ensemble Forecast (SSEF) system, are compared to NCEP’s operational Short Range Ensemble Forecast (SREF) system, which provides lateral boundary conditions for the SSEF, to see if the CAM ensemble outperforms the SREF through forecast hours 36–60. Equitable threat scores (ETSs) were computed for precipitation thresholds ranging from 0.10 to 0.75 in. for each SSEF and SREF member, as well as ensemble means, for 3-h accumulation periods. The ETS difference between the SSEF and SREF peaked during hours 36–42. Probabilistic forecasts were evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC area). The SSEF had higher values of ROC area, especially at thresholds ≥ 0.50 in. Additionally, time–longitude diagrams of diurnally averaged rainfall were constructed for each SSEF/SREF ensemble member. Spatial correlation coefficients between forecasts and observations in time–longitude space indicated that the SSEF depicted the diurnal cycle much better than the SREF, which underforecasted precipitation with a peak that had a 3-h phase lag. A minority of SREF members performed well.

Storm-Scale Data Assimilation and Ensemble Forecasts for the 27 April 2011 Severe Weather Outbreak in Alabama

Abstract As part of NOAA’s Warn-on-Forecast (WoF) initiative, a multiscale ensemble-based assimilation and prediction system is developed using the WRF-ARW model and DART assimilation software. To evaluate the capabilities of the system, retrospective short-range probabilistic storm-scale (convection allowing) ensemble analyses and forecasts are produced for the 27 April 2011 Alabama severe weather outbreak. Results indicate that the storm-scale ensembles are able to analyze the observed storms with strong low-level rotation at approximately the correct locations and to retain the supercell structures during the 0–1-h forecasts with reasonable accuracy. The system predicts the low-level mesocyclones of significant isolated tornadic supercells that align well with the locations of radar-derived rotation. For cases with multiple interacting storms in close proximity, the system tends to produce more variability in mesocyclone forecasts from one initialization time to the next until the observations show the dominance of one of the cells. The short-range ensemble probabilistic forecasts obtained from this continuous 5-min storm-scale 6-h-long update system demonstrate the potential of a frequently updated, high-resolution NWP system that could be used to extend severe weather warning lead times. This study also demonstrates the challenges associated with developing a WoF-type system. The results motivate future work to reduce model errors associated with storm motion and spurious cells, and to design storm-scale ensembles that better represent typical 1-h forecast errors.

Sensitivity of 24-h Forecast Dryline Position and Structure to Boundary Layer Parameterizations in Convection-Allowing WRF Model Simulations

Abstract Recent NOAA Hazardous Weather Testbed Spring Forecasting Experiments have emphasized the sensitivity of forecast sensible weather fields to how boundary layer processes are represented in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model. Thus, since 2010, the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms has configured at least three members of their WRF-based Storm-Scale Ensemble Forecast (SSEF) system specifically for examination of sensitivities to parameterizations of turbulent mixing, including the Mellor–Yamada–Janjić (MYJ); quasi-normal scale elimination (QNSE); Asymmetrical Convective Model, version 2 (ACM2); Yonsei University (YSU); and Mellor–Yamada–Nakanishi–Niino (MYNN) schemes (hereafter PBL members). In postexperiment analyses, significant differences in forecast boundary layer structure and evolution have been observed, and for preconvective environments MYNN was found to have a superior depiction of temperature and moisture profiles. This study evaluates the 24-h forecast dryline positions in the SSEF system PBL members during the period April–June 2010–12 and documents sensitivities of the vertical distribution of thermodynamic and kinematic variables in near-dryline environments. Main results include the following. Despite having superior temperature and moisture profiles, as indicated by a previous study, MYNN was one of the worst-performing PBL members, exhibiting large eastward errors in forecast dryline position. During April–June 2010–11, a dry bias in the North American Mesoscale Forecast System (NAM) initial conditions largely contributed to eastward dryline errors in all PBL members. An upgrade to the NAM and assimilation system in October 2011 apparently fixed the dry bias, reducing eastward errors. Large sensitivities of CAPE and low-level shear to the PBL schemes were found, which were largest between 1.0° and 3.0° to the east of drylines. Finally, modifications to YSU to decrease vertical mixing and mitigate its warm and dry bias greatly reduced eastward dryline errors.

Machine Learning Enhancement of Storm-Scale Ensemble Probabilistic Quantitative Precipitation Forecasts

Abstract Probabilistic quantitative precipitation forecasts challenge meteorologists due to the wide variability of precipitation amounts over small areas and their dependence on conditions at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Ensembles of convection-allowing numerical weather prediction models offer a way to produce improved precipitation forecasts and estimates of the forecast uncertainty. These models allow for the prediction of individual convective storms on the model grid, but they often displace the storms in space, time, and intensity, which results in added uncertainty. Machine learning methods can produce calibrated probabilistic forecasts from the raw ensemble data that correct for systemic biases in the ensemble precipitation forecast and incorporate additional uncertainty information from aggregations of the ensemble members and additional model variables. This study utilizes the 2010 Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms Storm-Scale Ensemble Forecast system and the National Severe Storms Laboratory National Mosaic & Multi-Sensor Quantitative Precipitation Estimate as input data for training logistic regressions and random forests to produce a calibrated probabilistic quantitative precipitation forecast. The reliability and discrimination of the forecasts are compared through verification statistics and a case study.

Application of Object-Based Time-Domain Diagnostics for Tracking Precipitation Systems in Convection-Allowing Models

Abstract Meaningful verification and evaluation of convection-allowing models requires approaches that do not rely on point-to-point matches of forecast and observed fields. In this study, one such approach—a beta version of the Method for Object-Based Diagnostic Evaluation (MODE) that incorporates the time dimension [known as MODE time-domain (MODE-TD)]—was applied to 30-h precipitation forecasts from four 4-km grid-spacing members of the 2010 Storm-Scale Ensemble Forecast system with different microphysics parameterizations. Including time in MODE-TD provides information on rainfall system evolution like lifetime, timing of initiation and dissipation, and translation. The simulations depicted the spatial distribution of time-domain precipitation objects across the United States quite well. However, all simulations overpredicted the number of objects, with the Thompson microphysics scheme overpredicting the most and the Morrison method the least. For the smallest smoothing radius and rainfall threshold used to define objects [8 km and 0.10 in. (1 in. = 2.54 cm), respectively], the most common object duration was 3 h in both models and observations. With an increased smoothing radius and rainfall threshold, the most common duration became shorter. The simulations depicted the diurnal cycle of object frequencies well, but overpredicted object frequencies uniformly across all forecast hours. The simulations had spurious maxima in initiating objects at the beginning of the forecast and a corresponding spurious maximum in dissipating objects slightly later. Examining average object velocities, a slow bias was found in the simulations, which was most pronounced in the Thompson member. These findings should aid users and developers of convection-allowing models and motivate future work utilizing time-domain methods for verifying high-resolution forecasts.

Using Varied Microphysics to Account for Uncertainty in Warm-Season QPF in a Convection-Allowing Ensemble

Abstract Two approaches for accounting for errors in quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPFs) due to uncertainty in the microphysics (MP) parameterization in a convection-allowing ensemble are examined. They include mixed MP (MMP) composed mostly of double-moment schemes and perturbing parameters within the Weather Research and Forecasting single-moment 6-class microphysics scheme (WSM6) MP scheme (PPMP). Thirty-five cases of real-time storm-scale ensemble forecasts produced by the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms during the NOAA Hazardous Weather Testbed 2011 Spring Experiment were examined. The MMP ensemble had better fractions Brier scores (FBSs) for most lead times and thresholds, but the PPMP ensemble had better relative operating characteristic (ROC) scores for higher precipitation thresholds. The pooled ensemble formed by randomly drawing five members from the MMP and PPMP ensembles was no more skillful than the more accurate of the MMP and PPMP ensembles. Significant positive impact was found when the two were combined to form a larger ensemble. The QPF and the systematic behaviors of derived microphysical variables were also examined. The skill of the QPF among different members depended on the thresholds, verification metrics, and forecast lead times. The profiles of microphysics variables from the double-moment schemes contained more variation in the vertical than those from the single-moment members. Among the double-moment schemes, WDM6 produced the smallest raindrops and very large number concentrations. Among the PPMP members, the behaviors were found to be consistent with the prescribed intercept parameters. The perturbed intercept parameters used in the PPMP ensemble fell within the range of values retrieved from the double-moment schemes.

Factors Influencing the Development and Maintenance of Nocturnal Heavy-Rain-Producing Convective Systems in a Storm-Scale Ensemble

Abstract From 9 to 11 June 2010, a mesoscale convective vortex (MCV) was associated with several periods of heavy rainfall that led to flash flooding. During the overnight hours, mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) developed that moved slowly and produced heavy rainfall over small areas in south-central Texas on 9 June, north Texas on 10 June, and western Arkansas on 11 June. In this study, forecasts of this event from the Center for the Analysis and Prediction of Storms' Storm-Scale Ensemble Forecast system are examined. This ensemble, with 26 members at 4-km horizontal grid spacing, included a few members that very accurately predicted the development, maintenance, and evolution of the heavy-rain-producing MCSs, along with a majority of members that had substantial errors in their precipitation forecasts. The processes favorable for the initiation, organization, and maintenance of these heavy-rain-producing MCSs are diagnosed by comparing ensemble members with accurate and inaccurate forecasts. Even within a synoptic environment known to be conducive to extreme local rainfall, there was considerable spread in the ensemble's rainfall predictions. Because all ensemble members included an anomalously moist environment, the precipitation predictions were insensitive to the atmospheric moisture. However, the development of heavy precipitation overnight was very sensitive to the intensity and evolution of convection the previous day. Convective influences on the strength of the MCV and its associated dome of cold air at low levels determined whether subsequent deep convection was initiated and maintained. In all, this ensemble provides quantitative and qualitative information about the mesoscale processes that are most favorable (or unfavorable) for localized extreme rainfall.

Tornado Pathlength Forecasts from 2010 to 2011 Using Ensemble Updraft Helicity

Abstract Examining forecasts from the Storm Scale Ensemble Forecast (SSEF) system run by the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms for the 2010 NOAA/Hazardous Weather Testbed Spring Forecasting Experiment, recent research diagnosed a strong relationship between the cumulative pathlengths of simulated rotating storms (measured using a three-dimensional object identification algorithm applied to forecast updraft helicity) and the cumulative pathlengths of tornadoes. This paper updates those results by including data from the 2011 SSEF system, and illustrates forecast examples from three major 2011 tornado outbreaks—16 and 27 April, and 24 May—as well as two forecast failure cases from June 2010. Finally, analysis updraft helicity (UH) from 27 April 2011 is computed using a three-dimensional variational data assimilation system to obtain 1.25-km grid-spacing analyses at 5-min intervals and compared to forecast UH from individual SSEF members.

The Diurnal Cycle of Precipitation from Continental Radar Mosaics and Numerical Weather Prediction Models. Part II: Intercomparison among Numerical Models and with Nowcasting

Abstract This second part of a two-paper series compares deterministic precipitation forecasts from the Storm-Scale Ensemble Forecast System (4-km grid) run during the 2008 NOAA Hazardous Weather Testbed (HWT) Spring Experiment, and from the Canadian Global Environmental Multiscale (GEM) model (15 km), in terms of their ability to reproduce the average diurnal cycle of precipitation during spring 2008. Moreover, radar-based nowcasts generated with the McGill Algorithm for Precipitation Nowcasting Using Semi-Lagrangian Extrapolation (MAPLE) are analyzed to quantify the portion of the diurnal cycle explained by the motion of precipitation systems, and to evaluate the potential of the NWP models for very short-term forecasting. The observed diurnal cycle of precipitation during spring 2008 is characterized by the dominance of the 24-h harmonic, which shifts with longitude, consistent with precipitation traveling across the continent. Time–longitude diagrams show that the analyzed NWP models partially reproduce this signal, but show more variability in the timing of initiation in the zonal motion of the precipitation systems than observed from radar. Traditional skill scores show that the radar data assimilation is the main reason for differences in model performance, while the analyzed models that do not assimilate radar observations have very similar skill. The analysis of MAPLE forecasts confirms that the motion of precipitation systems is responsible for the dominance of the 24-h harmonic in the longitudinal range 103°–85°W, where 8-h MAPLE forecasts initialized at 0100, 0900, and 1700 UTC successfully reproduce the eastward motion of rainfall systems. Also, on average, MAPLE outperforms radar data assimilating models for the 3–4 h after initialization, and nonradar data assimilating models for up to 5 h after initialization.

Forecasting Tornado Pathlengths Using a Three-Dimensional Object Identification Algorithm Applied to Convection-Allowing Forecasts

Abstract A three-dimensional (in space and time) object identification algorithm is applied to high-resolution forecasts of hourly maximum updraft helicity (UH)—a diagnostic that identifies simulated rotating storms—with the goal of diagnosing the relationship between forecast UH objects and observed tornado pathlengths. UH objects are contiguous swaths of UH exceeding a specified threshold. Including time allows tracks to span multiple hours and entire life cycles of simulated rotating storms. The object algorithm is applied to 3 yr of 36-h forecasts initialized daily from a 4-km grid-spacing version of the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) run in real time at the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL), and forecasts from the Storm Scale Ensemble Forecast (SSEF) system run by the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms for the 2010 NOAA Hazardous Weather Testbed Spring Forecasting Experiment. Methods for visualizing UH object attributes are presented, and the relationship between pathlengths of UH objects and tornadoes for corresponding 18- or 24-h periods is examined. For deterministic NSSL-WRF UH forecasts, the relationship of UH pathlengths to tornadoes was much stronger during spring (March–May) than in summer (June–August). Filtering UH track segments produced by high-based and/or elevated storms improved the UH–tornado pathlength correlations. The best ensemble results were obtained after filtering high-based and/or elevated UH track segments for the 20 cases in April–May 2010, during which correlation coefficients were as high as 0.91. The results indicate that forecast UH pathlengths during spring could be a very skillful predictor for the severity of tornado outbreaks as measured by total pathlength.
