Andrew Herring wins Storch Award

Andrew Herring, professor of chemical and biological engineering at Colorado School of Mines, will receive the 2018 Henry H. Storch Award in Fuel Science, sponsored by the ACS Energy & Fuels Division, during the ACS national meeting in Boston in August. Herring is an internationally recognized leader in polymer exchange membranes for electrochemical applications and fuel science. His research has led to pioneering advances in new fuel-cell electrocatalysts, photoelectrocatalysts, heteropoly acid-based catalysts, and membranes for electrochemical applications. He is also researching catalysts that will convert biomass into reformable hydrocarbon resources.

Phillip Britt wins Storch Award

Phillip F. Britt, chemical sciences division director at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is the 2016 recipient of the Henry H. Storch Award in Fuel Science, sponsored by the ACS Division of Energy & Fuels and the Elsevier journal Fuel. The award, consisting of $5,000 and a plaque, is given annually to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to research in the field of fuel science. Britt was honored for his elucidation of new fundamental insights into the complex mix of free-radical, ionic, and concerted reaction paths of oxygen functional groups in organic energy resources. This research led to the development of improved methods for converting fossil and biomass resources into fuels and chemicals.

Official Reports Of Committees From June Board Meeting, Washington, D.C.

The major actions taken by the ACS Board of Directors in early June in Washington, D.C, were reported in C&EN, June 12, page 37. Board Committee Reports Grants & Awards The committee approved 135 ACS-PRF grants-in-aid totaling $4,270,371 for fundamental research or scientific education from 455 proposals. PRF grant commitments for 1995, now complete, total $11,510,226. The board accepted the committee's recommendation that, in order to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest, the name of a current board member may not appear as a principal investigator on a proposal for a grant-in-aid from the Petroleum Research Fund. New sponsors are needed for the ACS Award in Petroleum Chemistry, the ACS Award in Separations Science & Technology, and the Henry H. Storch Award in Fuel Chemistry.
