Technical Efficiency of Artisanal Fishing Households in Malawi

This study assesses the technical efficiency of artisanal fishing households in Malawi using the stochastic production frontier model, particularly, the Cobb-Douglas model. The specific objectives of the study were two-fold: to measure the productivity of the artisanal fishers in Malawi and to find the determinants of their technical efficiency. The study used data obtained from the Malawi’s Fifth Integrated Household Survey (IHS-5), and results indicate that artisanal fishers are highly productive as the Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier production function exhibited increasing returns to scale. The study also found that the artisanal fishers are technically efficient as their mean technical efficiency score is about 99 percent, implying that on average, a typical artisanal fisher operates only 1 percent below the maximum potential output. Furthermore, the study findings indicate that amount of money a household pays as rent for a fishing gear, the number of fishers hired, and the number of fishing gears operated by a household are positive determinants of technical efficiency among artisanal fishers; whereas the payment to hired fishers on credit is a negative determinant of technical efficiency among the artisanal fishing households in Malawi. Hence, two-fold policy implications emanate from the study as follows: Firstly, in order to promote technical efficiency of the artisanal fishing households in Malawi, policymakers need to intensify efforts aimed at encouraging spawning of fish by, strictly, prohibiting fishing in the fish spawning months. Secondly, policymakers need to encourage the artisanal fishers to subsidize the productive inputs in the artisanal fisheries sub-sector such as fishing gears and boats, and improve fishers access to credit.

Analysis of Technical Efficiency of Fertilizer Subsidy Program in Coffee Farming, A Case study of Kenya

Fertilizer subsidy program is used to boost productivity by availing fertilizer to farmers at a cheaper price than the market price. This research sought to determine the technical efficiency of fertilizer subsidy program on coffee farming in Kenya. Coffee is a major cash crop of small-scale farmers, which has been experiencing declining productivity. The study adopted non-experimental cross-section research design. The study was carried out in Mukurwe-ini Sub-County, in Nyeri country, Kenya. Structured questionnaire were used to collect primary data from coffee farmers. Stochastic frontier production function (SFA) was used to evaluate the technical efficiency of coffee farming by analysing the relationship between coffee inputs and outputs. The SFA results revealed that fertilizer subsidy has a significant effect on technical efficiency. The technical efficiency for the individual farmers was found to range between 10.44% and 95.15% with a mean of 77.87%. The results revealed that about 76% of the coffee farmers were operating above 70 percent or more technical efficiency levels. Additionally, about 94% of the coffee farmers were operating at a technical efficiency level of above 50%. The coffee cooperative societies had variance in their technical efficiency - Rumukia at 80.65%, Ruthaka at 76.12%, Rugi at 79.97% and Gikaru at 79.24%. Technical inefficiency was found to be significantly influenced by age of the farmers and cooperative societies’ management. The study recommends development of inclusive policies that address income disparities among coffee farmers, improvement of cooperative societies’ management, and enhancing farmers’ trainings

Solar empowerment in agriculture: investigating photovoltaic energy’s impact on efficiency among wheat farmers

Persistent electricity shortages in Pakistan, causing prolonged grid power load shedding, have adversely impacted various sectors, notably agriculture and the livelihoods of rural farmers. Literature suggests that adopting photovoltaic solar energy can mitigate these issues. This research aims to measure the impact of photovoltaic solar energy on the technical efficiency of food productivity in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, applying data from 580 respondents. Addressing self-selective bias through ESR and stochastic frontier production function model is utilized to assess technical efficiency. The findings of this study reveal that farmers using solar energy experience a significant improvement in technical efficiency, with 15.8 percent of them achieving a 7.643 percent increase, after accounting for self-selection bias. Furthermore, the positive effects are more pronounced among larger farms and those with greater farming experience. This study underscores the importance of evidence-based approaches in implementing solar energy solutions, highlighting their potential to foster sustainability and equitable development at the grassroots level. The research culminates with policy recommendations that underscore the importance of promoting the photovoltaic solar energy use among farmers to improve food security and increase agricultural productivity.

Technical Efficiency of Smallholder Oil Palm Farms in Batanghari District Jambi Province, Indonesia

Smallholder oil palm farming is the main livelihood in Batanghari District, although its productivity has not shown maximum results. Maximum productivity achieved, it is necessary for farmers to do their business efficiently. This study aims to analyze technical efficiency and socio-economic factors that affect the technical efficiency of smallholder oil palm farming in Batanghari District. The research sample was determined using the multistage sampling method, which was used to sample farmers using simple random sampling. The number of respondents was 100 farmers. The stochastic frontier production function was used for data analysis. The results showed that the average technical efficiency of oil palm farming was 0,89 and had reached efficiency. However, this level can still be increased by 0,11 to achieve the highest level of technical efficiency. The technical efficiency of farming is affected by socio-economic factors, namely farming experience, distance from home to the farm, and the existence of partnerships. Based on the study's results, the technical efficiency of oil palm cultivation can be improved by utilizing production parameters precisely and accurately and increasing farmers' resources to achieve maximum production. For sustainable agricultural development, further research is needed to analyze the economic efficiency of oil palm farming so that the overall picture of both technical and economic efficiency can be seen.

ANALYSIS OF TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY OF CASSAVA FARMERS IN ABAK LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF AKWA IBOM STATE, NIGERIA

The study analyzed the technical efficiency of cassava farmers in Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to; describe the socio-economic characteristics of cassava farmers; determine the technical efficiency of cassava farmers; estimate the determinants of technical efficiency among cassava farmers and examined the constraints militating against cassava production in the study area. Multistage sampling procedure was used in selecting 120 respondents for the study. Primary data were obtained using structured questionnaire and the data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics and stochastic frontier production function. The result showed that the average age, household size, farming experience, and farm size of the sampled respondents were 39 years, 4 persons, 6 years and 1.9 hectares, respectively. The mean, maximum and minimum technical efficiency were 0.73, 0.95 and 0.38. The findings on the estimated stochastic production function and the determinants of technical inefficiency showed that farm size (p<0.01), cuttings (p<0.01) and labour (p<0.01) were found to be significant inputs in cassava production while household size (p<0.1), education (p<0.01), monthly income (p<0.01), membership of cooperative (p<0.01), access to credit (p<0.01) and access to extension services (p<0.1) were the determinants of technical inefficiency of cassava production in the study area. Also, the major constraints to cassava production were, high cost of fertilizer (13.7%), theft (13.7%), lack of access to credit (13.7%), inadequate access to land (13.7%), and poor road network (13.7%). The study recommends that training and capacity-building programs should be targeted to improve farmers' knowledge and skills in efficient cassava production techniques, with a focus on optimizing inputs such as farm size, cuttings, labour and extension services. Also outreach programs should be strengthened to provide farmers with timely information, technical support, and best practices for cassava production, thereby reducing technical inefficiencies.

Yield Gaps and Factors Affecting Production Inefficiency in Smallholder Oil Palm Plantations in Muaro Jambi District Jambi Province

Abstract Oil palm plantations in Indonesia, including in Jambi Province, are categorized into large private plantation, state-owned plantation, and smallholder plantation. The productivity of smallholders is the lowest compared to the other 2 categories. At the district and sub-district level, the yield of smallholder oil palm is also vary, spreading from 1,675 to 6,680 kg CPO per ha per year. The large yield variation is inseparable from the plantation management among farmers. The objectives of this research are to study the yield gap and technical efficiency of production among smallholders, and to analyze the factors that affect the technical production inefficiency in smallholder oil palm plantation. The research was conducted in Muaro Jambi District as a main palm oil producing district in Jambi Province. Data was collected from a sampel of 120 independent smallholders. One way anova test was used to study the yield gap and double natural log (ln) of Cobb–Douglas stochastic frontier production function was used to analyze the technical efficiency and some factors affects its inefficiency. The results revealed that there were significant differences in yield among smallholders based on area size, level of education, and activeness in the farmer organizations. However, on average, the management of oil palm by independent smallholders is quite technically efficient. The factor that significantly affects the level of technical inefficiency are the size of the area and farmers’ level of education.

Technical efficiency of factors affecting soybean farming in Tanjab Timur Regency

This research was carried out with the aim of: Knowing the general description of soybean farming in Tanjab Timur Regency, Analyzing the level of technical efficiency of soybean farming in Tanjab Timur Regency, Analyzing the level of technical inefficiency of soybean farming in Tanjab Timur Regency. The analytical tool used is Stochastic Frontier production function analysis with Cobb- Douglas and calculating the level of efficiency and inefficiency. This research was conducted in Tanjab Timur Regency. The sampling technique was the census method with a sample of 120 farmers. The data used is secondary and primary data. The research results showed that: The condition of the land in the research area is tidal land with an average production of 1,039, The use of production inputs in the research area is technically efficient, reaching 0.767. Socio-economic factors such as age and education variables have no real effect and increase inefficiency while experience variables, number of family members and extension have no real effect, but increase technical efficiency or reduce inefficiency, Simultaneously or partially age, education, experience, number of family members and extension has no real effect on production.

Environmental Efficiency of Monsoon Rice (Oryza sativa) Production between Transplanting and Broadcasting Sowing Methods in Myanmar

Introduction Myanmar relies on rice for its food security and economic significance, ranking seventh in the world for rice exports as of 2021. The most significant concern in rice production is exceeding the recommended nitrogen (N) fertilizer usage rate. Nitrogen is a crucial fertilizer for rice production, but it poses negative environmental consequences, such as nitrous oxide emissions. Therefore, this study intended to assess the technical (TE) and environmental efficiency (EE) of monsoon rice production in Myanmar and compare the efficiencies of broadcasting (BC) and transplanting (TP) sowing methods. Methods A translog stochastic frontier production function approach estimated the output-oriented technical efficiency and environmental efficiency of monsoon rice production. The study conducted face-to-face interviews with 317 farmers in Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, Myanmar. Results The overall mean TE and EE were 81% and 23%, respectively. The average TE and EE for N fertilizer were 84% and 35% using the TP method and 80% and 20% using the BC method, respectively. Conclusion Our findings confirmed that the TP method was technically and environmentally superior to the BC method. The adoption of the TP method should be promoted by highlighting its positive impacts on achieving sustainable monsoon rice production in Myanmar.

TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY OF VEGETABLE PRODUCTION AMONG WETLAND VEGETABLE FARMERS IN SOUTHWEST NIGERIA

This study employed Cobb-Douglas Stochastic Frontier Production function to measure technical efficiency and its determinants among dry season vegetable farmers in selected wetland catchments in Southwest Nigeria. A multistage random sampling procedure was adopted to select 450 wetlands vegetable farmers across Oyo, Ogun and Lagos States and data were collected with the aid of structured questionnaire in 2020. Technical efficiency (TE) estimates indicated that wetlands vegetable farmers operated below the production frontier with the mean technical efficiency value of 0.74. Increased farm size, family labour, quantity of seed planted, and quantity of agrochemical significantly (p<0.01) improved the farmers’ technical efficiency level. The study found that extension contact, access to credit, farming experience, and membership of an association negatively and significantly related to technical inefficiency at 1 and 5%. Weighted average price and household size were significantly and positively related to technical inefficiency. It was recommended that attention should be given to improvement in the visitation by extension agent, the provision of improved seeds and affordable financial support. Toward green production practices: empirical evidence from Thai manufacturers' technical efficiency

PurposeThe development of green manufacturing has become essential to achieve sustainable development and modernize the nation’s manufacturing and production capacity without increasing nonrenewable resource consumption and pollution. This study investigates the effect of green industrial practices on technical efficiency for Thai manufacturers.Design/methodology/approachThe study uses stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) to estimate the stochastic frontier production function (SFPF) and inefficiency effects model, as pioneered by Battese and Coelli (1995).FindingsThis study shows that, on average, Thai manufacturing firms have experienced declining returns-to-scale production and relatively low technical efficiency. However, it is estimated that Thai manufacturing firms with a green commitment obtained the highest technical efficiency, followed by those with green activity, green systems and green culture levels, compared to those without any commitment to green manufacturing practices. Finally, internationalization and skill development can significantly improve technical efficiency.Practical implicationsGreen industry policy mixes will be vital for driving structural reforms toward a more environmentally friendly and sustainable economic system. Furthermore, circular economy processes can promote firms' production efficiency and resource use.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to investigate the effect of green industry practices on the technical efficiency of Thai manufacturing enterprises. This study also encompasses analyses of the roles of internationalization, innovation and skill development.

Examining the impact of revenue diversity on government productivity using stochastic frontier production function: the U.S. State government

ABSTRACT This study empirically examines the impact of revenue diversity on government productivity across U.S. states via a two-step system generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation during a 41-year period (1980–2020). Government productivity is driven by revenue diversity, economic growth, fiscal health, and population density. In particular, increasing revenue diversity promotes state governments’ productivity, supporting our hypothesis. This result holds even after the mortgage crisis. These new findings suggest that states can enhance their productivity by expanding their revenue sources. Economic growth and rising fiscal health foster government productivity; these results apply after the mortgage crisis as well. An increase in population density also boosts government productivity during the study period. Climbing tax burdens undermine productivity, whereas growth in long-term debt facilitates productivity after the mortgage crisis. This study defines and expands the concept of productivity in U.S. state governments and explores influencing factors. Subsequent research can build on this theoretical model by integrating other variables tied to government productivity.

A Stochastic Frontier Approach to Study the Relationship between the Hygienic Quality of Bulk Tank Sheep Milk and Technical Efficiency of the Coagulation Process.

Sheep milk from local breeds is important for the production of high-quality cheeses throughout the Mediterranean region, such as Manchego cheese in Spain. To maintain sustainable and efficient production, it is necessary to reach a better understanding of how the composition and hygiene of the milk affect the coagulation process, with the aim of optimizing production yield. This study implemented a stochastic production frontier function to estimate the potential production of curd and efficiency using data from the four seasons of a study of 77 Manchega sheep farms. The Cobb-Douglas production frontier model was estimated using the maximum likelihood estimation method. The results showed that the content of protein, lactose, and fat exhibited increasing returns to scale, with protein content being the most significant factor for curd production. Approximately half of the inefficiency was due to factors related to the technological properties and the hygiene of the milk. The pH, curd firmness, and concentration of lactic acid bacteria improved the efficiency of coagulation, while the concentration of spores of lactate-fermenting Clostridium spp., Pseudomonas spp., staphylococci, and catalase-negative gram-positive cocci favored the inefficiency of the coagulation process. To date, this is the first study to evaluate the effect of different factors, such as microbial groups, milk composition, and technological properties, on the efficiency of the coagulation process in dairy sheep.

How Does Land Fragmentation Affect Agricultural Technical Efficiency? Based on Mediation Effects Analysis

The scientific revelation of the mechanism underlying land fragmentation’s influence on agricultural technical efficiency is extremely important. This study utilized survey data from 305 villages across 12 provinces in Southern China in 2020 to assess technical efficiency through the application of the stochastic frontier production function. Moreover, we investigated the direct impact of land fragmentation on technical efficiency and the indirect impact transmitted through crop diversification and part-time farming by employing Tobit and mediating effect models, respectively. The key findings are as follows: (1) The sampled farmers, on average, operated 0.614 hectares of land with 17.395 plots, and the mean of their technical efficiency was 0.630. (2) The overall effect of land fragmentation on technical efficiency demonstrated a “U”-shaped relationship. (3) Crop diversification and part-time farming were mediating factors in the impact of land fragmentation on technical efficiency. Specifically, an “inverted U”-shaped relationship existed between land fragmentation and crop diversification, whereas a negative linear relationship was observed between land fragmentation and part-time farming. Conversely, crop diversification presented a positive linear relationship with technical efficiency, and part-time farming had an “inverted U”-shaped relationship with technical efficiency. (4) The impact of land fragmentation on technical efficiency varied across altitude zones. It is recommended to control land fragmentation based on local conditions, encourage crop diversification, and strengthen employment guidance and skills training for farmers to ensure the orderly transfer of land.

THE PROFIT EFFICIENCY OF MORINGA OLEIFERA PRODUCTION IN OSUN STATE, NIGERIA

This study examined the profit efficiency of Moringa oleifera production by farmers in Osun State, Nigeria. Primary data were obtained from 150 respondents. Multistage sampling procedure was used for selecting respondents. The data were analyzed with the aid of descriptive statistics, budgetary analysis and stochastic frontier production function. The findings revealed that male predominate moringa enterprise with about 55.3% male, most producers fall between the age bracket 41-50years with a mean age of 44.92 (± 13.168) years and the average farm size is 0.3 hectares whilst indicating that most producers had less than 0.1 hectares of land. Moringa production had a benefit cost ratio of ₦5.852, profit margin of ₦0.182, expense structure ratio of ₦0.107, net return on investment ₦4.857, rate of return of ₦5.482 and profitability ratio of ₦0.981. The average profit efficiency of moringa producers was 18.73% on the profit frontier. Family labour, hired labour and transport cost were significant and had positive coefficient while the seed cost, pesticide cost, level of education and farm size are also significant but bears negative coefficient. The level of education and farm size are amongst the inefficiency variables considered. This study concludes that Moringa oleifera production is highly profitable but producers have not been able to maximize profit efficiency. It therefore recommends that producers improve on adding value to moringa products and extend their channels of distribution considering the cost incurred on transportation.

Exploring the relationship between regional tourism development and land use efficiency: A case study of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China.

The utilization efficiency of land resources is an essential embodiment of economic development, social development, and ecological development and is a critical core to measure how to maximize the efficiency of land resources under limited conditions. The land is an important content and essential carrier of the research of tourism development level. This paper selects Panel Data from 2010 to 2019 to research the Guangxi regional tourism development. The entropy weight method and stochastic frontier production function (SFA) model were used to evaluate the development level of urban-rural tourism and the utilization efficiency of land resources in Guangxi. This paper uses the Panel Vector Autoregression (PVAR) model to analyze the internal relationship between urban-rural tourism development. The results show that: (1) Guangxi has a good level of tourism development and a high land use efficiency. (2) There is a reciprocal causation relationship between the regional tourism development level and land use efficiency in Guangxi, with significant levels of 0.005 and 0.034 respectively, indicating high credibility. This indicates that there is a mutual promotion and interaction between the two, which rely on and drive each other, promoting the joint sustainability of tourism development and land use efficiency. (3) . The tourism development level is greatly influenced by itself, with impact values all above 0.99. At the same time, land use also has a significant self-impact, with impact values all above 0.87. Their internal optimization system is solid and endogenous impetus is robust, which can drive their development. Establishing an effective strategy for developing and protecting land use is beneficial to promote the long-term effectiveness of sustainable tourism development, enhancing high-quality development of the tourism economy and improving people's living standards and quality.

Multiple roles of agricultural cooperatives in improving farm technical efficiency: A case study of rural Gansu, China

AbstractThe establishment of agricultural cooperatives is widely viewed as an institutional arrangement to remove constraints that prevent smallholders from accessing profitable business opportunities in agriculture. Agricultural cooperatives in China offer a wide range of services within the framework of contract farming and vertical integration. This study empirically examines the multiple roles of China's cooperatives in improving farm production efficiency and conserving the agricultural environment. Considering that agricultural cooperatives' services can be broadly divided into biological and machinery services, we specify a stochastic frontier production function in a special form, called the separated Cobb–Douglas. The empirical results present clear evidence that Chinese agricultural cooperatives play essential roles in increasing biochemical technical efficiency and protecting the agroecological environment. However, the involvement of cooperatives as vertical integrators is demonstrated to have a detrimental effect on biochemical technical efficiency. The pressing challenge for agricultural cooperative development in China is to accommodate the conflicting consequences that their entry into farming has on biochemical and machinery technical efficiencies. Analyzing Technical Efficiency in Cereal Production across Selected European Union Countries

This paper investigates the technical efficiency of cereal production in European Union (EU) countries from 2008 to 2018. The primary purpose is to estimate technical efficiency scores by country and crop and explain their variation using macroeconomic and agricultural policy variables using the stochastic frontier production function. The results indicate that the United Kingdom has the highest efficiency in barley production, while Finland has the lowest. France exhibits the highest efficiency in common wheat, and Romania has the lowest efficiency in grain maize production. This study also explores the impact of various factors on technical efficiency, finding, for example, the positive effects of female wages and foreign direct investment on barley production efficiency and the negative effects of forest area and subsidies. Similar analyses were conducted for wheat and maize production. The results indicate a variation in technical efficiency scores across crops and countries. This diversity in performance not only reflects the inherent complexities within each crop but also emphasizes the crucial role played by macroeconomic variables and agricultural policies in shaping efficiency outcomes on a country-wide scale.

Stochastic Frontier Analysis of Hot Pepper Production among Small-Scale Farmers in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State, Nigeria

This study used the Stochastic Frontier model to analyze hot pepper production among small-scale farmers in Dutsin-ma Local Government Area, Katsina State. Purposive and proportionate random sampling techniques were used to select 121 hot pepper farmers from whom the data was collected using a structured questionnaire. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, gross margin analysis, and stochastic frontier production function model. The result of the study shows that hot pepper production activity is dominated by male (99.2%) and married (95.0%) farmers whom are middle aged (Mean = 39 year) and most of them (about 53%) have household size of 1-10 persons, and an average farming experience of 13 years with a farm size average of 1.5 hectares. Majority of the hot pepper producers are engaged in its production for income generation while only few among them have access to credits. The result of the gross margin analysis (GM) shows that hot pepper farmers incurred total variable cost (TVC) of NGN138,703.6, and a return of NGN164,513.4 that yielded the profit of NGN25,809.8 per hectare of production and a return on investment of 1.28. The average technical efficiency (TE) of the farmers was found to be 80% among hot pepper farmers in the study area. Moreover the result of the frontier analysis shows that seed, labor and fertilizer are significant inputs determining hot pepper output. In addition to that inefficiency components of the frontier analysis revealed education, access to extension service, cooperative membership, Years of farming experience, farm size, and household size to be the significant determinants of efficiency of hot pepper production in the study area. The result also revealed that farmers in the study area are faced with major challenges of high costs of production inputs and problems of pests and diseases.

This research work examined the economics of yam production among smallholder farmers in Gwagwalada and Kwali Area Council of Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria. The specific objectives include to: estimate the profitability of yam production and examine technical efficiency in yam production. Multistage sampling was used for this study. Data was analyzed with descriptive Statistics, Stochastic Frontier Production Function, Gross Margin Analysis and Principal Components Analysis. The results showed that, (86.2%) of the respondents were males with average age of 40 years and 17 years farming experience. Also 43.27% of the sampled yam farmers had no formal education with average household size of 6 persons, and also (64.1%) were not members of any farmers association. Also 47.44% of the sampled farmers sourced their capital through personal savings. Whereas, 90.06% of the farmers had access to extension services with average farm size of 2ha. The result of costs and returns reveals that the cost of labour was N 98, 865.74/ha which carried the highest proportion of the total variable cost (TVC). The TVC incurred by the yam farmers was N 202, 544.82/ha and the total revenue obtained was N 410, 879.80/ha with the gross margin of N 208, 334.98 which indicates that yam production was a profitable enterprise in the study area. The factors that influence the total output were farm size (P<0.05), Agro chemical (P<0.01). The factors influencing technical efficiency were educational level of farmers (P<0.05), access to credit facilities (P<0.05), extension contact (P<0.05), farming experience (P<0.05), household size (P<0.05) and cooperative membership of (P<0.05). The mean technical efficiency was 51.1%. Yam farmers encountered the following constraints; high cost of transportation, inputs, seed material, inadequate finances and lack of storage facilities. The following recommendations were made: since yam production is a profitable enterprise it should be encouraged to increase their scale of production to earn more profit that could improve their welfare and livelihood. Farm input such as agro-chemical, improved seed varieties should be provided to yam farmers at subsidized rate and timely by government or non-governmental agencies.
