Technical efficiency of factors affecting soybean farming in Tanjab Timur Regency

This research was carried out with the aim of: Knowing the general description of soybean farming in Tanjab Timur Regency, Analyzing the level of technical efficiency of soybean farming in Tanjab Timur Regency, Analyzing the level of technical inefficiency of soybean farming in Tanjab Timur Regency. The analytical tool used is Stochastic Frontier production function analysis with Cobb- Douglas and calculating the level of efficiency and inefficiency. This research was conducted in Tanjab Timur Regency. The sampling technique was the census method with a sample of 120 farmers. The data used is secondary and primary data. The research results showed that: The condition of the land in the research area is tidal land with an average production of 1,039, The use of production inputs in the research area is technically efficient, reaching 0.767. Socio-economic factors such as age and education variables have no real effect and increase inefficiency while experience variables, number of family members and extension have no real effect, but increase technical efficiency or reduce inefficiency, Simultaneously or partially age, education, experience, number of family members and extension has no real effect on production.

Environmental Efficiency of Monsoon Rice (Oryza sativa) Production between Transplanting and Broadcasting Sowing Methods in Myanmar

Introduction Myanmar relies on rice for its food security and economic significance, ranking seventh in the world for rice exports as of 2021. The most significant concern in rice production is exceeding the recommended nitrogen (N) fertilizer usage rate. Nitrogen is a crucial fertilizer for rice production, but it poses negative environmental consequences, such as nitrous oxide emissions. Therefore, this study intended to assess the technical (TE) and environmental efficiency (EE) of monsoon rice production in Myanmar and compare the efficiencies of broadcasting (BC) and transplanting (TP) sowing methods. Methods A translog stochastic frontier production function approach estimated the output-oriented technical efficiency and environmental efficiency of monsoon rice production. The study conducted face-to-face interviews with 317 farmers in Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, Myanmar. Results The overall mean TE and EE were 81% and 23%, respectively. The average TE and EE for N fertilizer were 84% and 35% using the TP method and 80% and 20% using the BC method, respectively. Conclusion Our findings confirmed that the TP method was technically and environmentally superior to the BC method. The adoption of the TP method should be promoted by highlighting its positive impacts on achieving sustainable monsoon rice production in Myanmar.

TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY OF VEGETABLE PRODUCTION AMONG WETLAND VEGETABLE FARMERS IN SOUTHWEST NIGERIA

This study employed Cobb-Douglas Stochastic Frontier Production function to measure technical efficiency and its determinants among dry season vegetable farmers in selected wetland catchments in Southwest Nigeria. A multistage random sampling procedure was adopted to select 450 wetlands vegetable farmers across Oyo, Ogun and Lagos States and data were collected with the aid of structured questionnaire in 2020. Technical efficiency (TE) estimates indicated that wetlands vegetable farmers operated below the production frontier with the mean technical efficiency value of 0.74. Increased farm size, family labour, quantity of seed planted, and quantity of agrochemical significantly (p<0.01) improved the farmers’ technical efficiency level. The study found that extension contact, access to credit, farming experience, and membership of an association negatively and significantly related to technical inefficiency at 1 and 5%. Weighted average price and household size were significantly and positively related to technical inefficiency. It was recommended that attention should be given to improvement in the visitation by extension agent, the provision of improved seeds and affordable financial support. Toward green production practices: empirical evidence from Thai manufacturers' technical efficiency

PurposeThe development of green manufacturing has become essential to achieve sustainable development and modernize the nation’s manufacturing and production capacity without increasing nonrenewable resource consumption and pollution. This study investigates the effect of green industrial practices on technical efficiency for Thai manufacturers.Design/methodology/approachThe study uses stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) to estimate the stochastic frontier production function (SFPF) and inefficiency effects model, as pioneered by Battese and Coelli (1995).FindingsThis study shows that, on average, Thai manufacturing firms have experienced declining returns-to-scale production and relatively low technical efficiency. However, it is estimated that Thai manufacturing firms with a green commitment obtained the highest technical efficiency, followed by those with green activity, green systems and green culture levels, compared to those without any commitment to green manufacturing practices. Finally, internationalization and skill development can significantly improve technical efficiency.Practical implicationsGreen industry policy mixes will be vital for driving structural reforms toward a more environmentally friendly and sustainable economic system. Furthermore, circular economy processes can promote firms' production efficiency and resource use.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to investigate the effect of green industry practices on the technical efficiency of Thai manufacturing enterprises. This study also encompasses analyses of the roles of internationalization, innovation and skill development.

Examining the impact of revenue diversity on government productivity using stochastic frontier production function: the U.S. State government

ABSTRACT This study empirically examines the impact of revenue diversity on government productivity across U.S. states via a two-step system generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation during a 41-year period (1980–2020). Government productivity is driven by revenue diversity, economic growth, fiscal health, and population density. In particular, increasing revenue diversity promotes state governments’ productivity, supporting our hypothesis. This result holds even after the mortgage crisis. These new findings suggest that states can enhance their productivity by expanding their revenue sources. Economic growth and rising fiscal health foster government productivity; these results apply after the mortgage crisis as well. An increase in population density also boosts government productivity during the study period. Climbing tax burdens undermine productivity, whereas growth in long-term debt facilitates productivity after the mortgage crisis. This study defines and expands the concept of productivity in U.S. state governments and explores influencing factors. Subsequent research can build on this theoretical model by integrating other variables tied to government productivity.

A Stochastic Frontier Approach to Study the Relationship between the Hygienic Quality of Bulk Tank Sheep Milk and Technical Efficiency of the Coagulation Process.

Sheep milk from local breeds is important for the production of high-quality cheeses throughout the Mediterranean region, such as Manchego cheese in Spain. To maintain sustainable and efficient production, it is necessary to reach a better understanding of how the composition and hygiene of the milk affect the coagulation process, with the aim of optimizing production yield. This study implemented a stochastic production frontier function to estimate the potential production of curd and efficiency using data from the four seasons of a study of 77 Manchega sheep farms. The Cobb-Douglas production frontier model was estimated using the maximum likelihood estimation method. The results showed that the content of protein, lactose, and fat exhibited increasing returns to scale, with protein content being the most significant factor for curd production. Approximately half of the inefficiency was due to factors related to the technological properties and the hygiene of the milk. The pH, curd firmness, and concentration of lactic acid bacteria improved the efficiency of coagulation, while the concentration of spores of lactate-fermenting Clostridium spp., Pseudomonas spp., staphylococci, and catalase-negative gram-positive cocci favored the inefficiency of the coagulation process. To date, this is the first study to evaluate the effect of different factors, such as microbial groups, milk composition, and technological properties, on the efficiency of the coagulation process in dairy sheep.

How Does Land Fragmentation Affect Agricultural Technical Efficiency? Based on Mediation Effects Analysis

The scientific revelation of the mechanism underlying land fragmentation’s influence on agricultural technical efficiency is extremely important. This study utilized survey data from 305 villages across 12 provinces in Southern China in 2020 to assess technical efficiency through the application of the stochastic frontier production function. Moreover, we investigated the direct impact of land fragmentation on technical efficiency and the indirect impact transmitted through crop diversification and part-time farming by employing Tobit and mediating effect models, respectively. The key findings are as follows: (1) The sampled farmers, on average, operated 0.614 hectares of land with 17.395 plots, and the mean of their technical efficiency was 0.630. (2) The overall effect of land fragmentation on technical efficiency demonstrated a “U”-shaped relationship. (3) Crop diversification and part-time farming were mediating factors in the impact of land fragmentation on technical efficiency. Specifically, an “inverted U”-shaped relationship existed between land fragmentation and crop diversification, whereas a negative linear relationship was observed between land fragmentation and part-time farming. Conversely, crop diversification presented a positive linear relationship with technical efficiency, and part-time farming had an “inverted U”-shaped relationship with technical efficiency. (4) The impact of land fragmentation on technical efficiency varied across altitude zones. It is recommended to control land fragmentation based on local conditions, encourage crop diversification, and strengthen employment guidance and skills training for farmers to ensure the orderly transfer of land.

THE PROFIT EFFICIENCY OF MORINGA OLEIFERA PRODUCTION IN OSUN STATE, NIGERIA

This study examined the profit efficiency of Moringa oleifera production by farmers in Osun State, Nigeria. Primary data were obtained from 150 respondents. Multistage sampling procedure was used for selecting respondents. The data were analyzed with the aid of descriptive statistics, budgetary analysis and stochastic frontier production function. The findings revealed that male predominate moringa enterprise with about 55.3% male, most producers fall between the age bracket 41-50years with a mean age of 44.92 (± 13.168) years and the average farm size is 0.3 hectares whilst indicating that most producers had less than 0.1 hectares of land. Moringa production had a benefit cost ratio of ₦5.852, profit margin of ₦0.182, expense structure ratio of ₦0.107, net return on investment ₦4.857, rate of return of ₦5.482 and profitability ratio of ₦0.981. The average profit efficiency of moringa producers was 18.73% on the profit frontier. Family labour, hired labour and transport cost were significant and had positive coefficient while the seed cost, pesticide cost, level of education and farm size are also significant but bears negative coefficient. The level of education and farm size are amongst the inefficiency variables considered. This study concludes that Moringa oleifera production is highly profitable but producers have not been able to maximize profit efficiency. It therefore recommends that producers improve on adding value to moringa products and extend their channels of distribution considering the cost incurred on transportation.

Exploring the relationship between regional tourism development and land use efficiency: A case study of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China.

The utilization efficiency of land resources is an essential embodiment of economic development, social development, and ecological development and is a critical core to measure how to maximize the efficiency of land resources under limited conditions. The land is an important content and essential carrier of the research of tourism development level. This paper selects Panel Data from 2010 to 2019 to research the Guangxi regional tourism development. The entropy weight method and stochastic frontier production function (SFA) model were used to evaluate the development level of urban-rural tourism and the utilization efficiency of land resources in Guangxi. This paper uses the Panel Vector Autoregression (PVAR) model to analyze the internal relationship between urban-rural tourism development. The results show that: (1) Guangxi has a good level of tourism development and a high land use efficiency. (2) There is a reciprocal causation relationship between the regional tourism development level and land use efficiency in Guangxi, with significant levels of 0.005 and 0.034 respectively, indicating high credibility. This indicates that there is a mutual promotion and interaction between the two, which rely on and drive each other, promoting the joint sustainability of tourism development and land use efficiency. (3) . The tourism development level is greatly influenced by itself, with impact values all above 0.99. At the same time, land use also has a significant self-impact, with impact values all above 0.87. Their internal optimization system is solid and endogenous impetus is robust, which can drive their development. Establishing an effective strategy for developing and protecting land use is beneficial to promote the long-term effectiveness of sustainable tourism development, enhancing high-quality development of the tourism economy and improving people's living standards and quality.

Multiple roles of agricultural cooperatives in improving farm technical efficiency: A case study of rural Gansu, China

AbstractThe establishment of agricultural cooperatives is widely viewed as an institutional arrangement to remove constraints that prevent smallholders from accessing profitable business opportunities in agriculture. Agricultural cooperatives in China offer a wide range of services within the framework of contract farming and vertical integration. This study empirically examines the multiple roles of China's cooperatives in improving farm production efficiency and conserving the agricultural environment. Considering that agricultural cooperatives' services can be broadly divided into biological and machinery services, we specify a stochastic frontier production function in a special form, called the separated Cobb–Douglas. The empirical results present clear evidence that Chinese agricultural cooperatives play essential roles in increasing biochemical technical efficiency and protecting the agroecological environment. However, the involvement of cooperatives as vertical integrators is demonstrated to have a detrimental effect on biochemical technical efficiency. The pressing challenge for agricultural cooperative development in China is to accommodate the conflicting consequences that their entry into farming has on biochemical and machinery technical efficiencies. Analyzing Technical Efficiency in Cereal Production across Selected European Union Countries

This paper investigates the technical efficiency of cereal production in European Union (EU) countries from 2008 to 2018. The primary purpose is to estimate technical efficiency scores by country and crop and explain their variation using macroeconomic and agricultural policy variables using the stochastic frontier production function. The results indicate that the United Kingdom has the highest efficiency in barley production, while Finland has the lowest. France exhibits the highest efficiency in common wheat, and Romania has the lowest efficiency in grain maize production. This study also explores the impact of various factors on technical efficiency, finding, for example, the positive effects of female wages and foreign direct investment on barley production efficiency and the negative effects of forest area and subsidies. Similar analyses were conducted for wheat and maize production. The results indicate a variation in technical efficiency scores across crops and countries. This diversity in performance not only reflects the inherent complexities within each crop but also emphasizes the crucial role played by macroeconomic variables and agricultural policies in shaping efficiency outcomes on a country-wide scale.

Stochastic Frontier Analysis of Hot Pepper Production among Small-Scale Farmers in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State, Nigeria

This study used the Stochastic Frontier model to analyze hot pepper production among small-scale farmers in Dutsin-ma Local Government Area, Katsina State. Purposive and proportionate random sampling techniques were used to select 121 hot pepper farmers from whom the data was collected using a structured questionnaire. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, gross margin analysis, and stochastic frontier production function model. The result of the study shows that hot pepper production activity is dominated by male (99.2%) and married (95.0%) farmers whom are middle aged (Mean = 39 year) and most of them (about 53%) have household size of 1-10 persons, and an average farming experience of 13 years with a farm size average of 1.5 hectares. Majority of the hot pepper producers are engaged in its production for income generation while only few among them have access to credits. The result of the gross margin analysis (GM) shows that hot pepper farmers incurred total variable cost (TVC) of NGN138,703.6, and a return of NGN164,513.4 that yielded the profit of NGN25,809.8 per hectare of production and a return on investment of 1.28. The average technical efficiency (TE) of the farmers was found to be 80% among hot pepper farmers in the study area. Moreover the result of the frontier analysis shows that seed, labor and fertilizer are significant inputs determining hot pepper output. In addition to that inefficiency components of the frontier analysis revealed education, access to extension service, cooperative membership, Years of farming experience, farm size, and household size to be the significant determinants of efficiency of hot pepper production in the study area. The result also revealed that farmers in the study area are faced with major challenges of high costs of production inputs and problems of pests and diseases.

This research work examined the economics of yam production among smallholder farmers in Gwagwalada and Kwali Area Council of Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria. The specific objectives include to: estimate the profitability of yam production and examine technical efficiency in yam production. Multistage sampling was used for this study. Data was analyzed with descriptive Statistics, Stochastic Frontier Production Function, Gross Margin Analysis and Principal Components Analysis. The results showed that, (86.2%) of the respondents were males with average age of 40 years and 17 years farming experience. Also 43.27% of the sampled yam farmers had no formal education with average household size of 6 persons, and also (64.1%) were not members of any farmers association. Also 47.44% of the sampled farmers sourced their capital through personal savings. Whereas, 90.06% of the farmers had access to extension services with average farm size of 2ha. The result of costs and returns reveals that the cost of labour was N 98, 865.74/ha which carried the highest proportion of the total variable cost (TVC). The TVC incurred by the yam farmers was N 202, 544.82/ha and the total revenue obtained was N 410, 879.80/ha with the gross margin of N 208, 334.98 which indicates that yam production was a profitable enterprise in the study area. The factors that influence the total output were farm size (P<0.05), Agro chemical (P<0.01). The factors influencing technical efficiency were educational level of farmers (P<0.05), access to credit facilities (P<0.05), extension contact (P<0.05), farming experience (P<0.05), household size (P<0.05) and cooperative membership of (P<0.05). The mean technical efficiency was 51.1%. Yam farmers encountered the following constraints; high cost of transportation, inputs, seed material, inadequate finances and lack of storage facilities. The following recommendations were made: since yam production is a profitable enterprise it should be encouraged to increase their scale of production to earn more profit that could improve their welfare and livelihood. Farm input such as agro-chemical, improved seed varieties should be provided to yam farmers at subsidized rate and timely by government or non-governmental agencies. Determining the Technical Efficiency of Potato Farms and Influencing Factors in Bamyan Province

Considering the limitation of resources in agriculture, the need to shift the method of higher productivity through increasing inputs into improving the technical efficiency is becoming more important. Since potato production is one of major agricultural activities in Bamyan province which supports the livelihood of the majority of the peasant community and more thane50% of the country’s total potato production is produced here, the province has the most prominent position compared to other provinces in this regard. The current study aimed to determine the technical efficiency of potato farms and the influencing factors in Yakawlang district and Bamyan center. The required were collected using stratified sampling method by filling questionnaires with 286 potato farmers in 2019. To determine the technical efficiency of potato production, Cobb- Douglas stochastic frontier production function along with inefficiency function were applied. The results showed that the inputs such as area under cultivation, labor force, amount of seed, amount of DAP fertilizer and animal manure had positive and significant effects on potato production. The mean of technical efficiency was 71.5% varying from the lowest of 26.9% to the highest of 92.7% was calculated. the inefficiency model also revealed that the variables marital status, living area, meeting with the extension workers year-round and satisfaction from the sale method of potato had positive effect on the level of technical efficiency of potato farmers. Based on the results, the qualitative and quantitative betterment in extension training programs coupled with DAP fertilizer and animal manure can be the managerial measures.

Analysis of the Impact of Land Use Change on Grain Production in Jiangsu Province, China

Located in the Yangtze River Delta region, Jiangsu Province has become the major grain production area of China and plays an important role in ensuring national food security. With rapid economic development and urbanization, the amount of cultivated land has decreased, which greatly affects food security. Based on the statistical data of grain production in Jiangsu Province since 2000 and the remote sensing data of 2000, 2010, and 2020, this paper used the stochastic frontier production function to calculate the output elasticity of various factors and the technical efficiency of grain production. The agglomeration effect of food production was investigated by using spatial correlation analysis. Finally, regression analysis was applied to examine the impact of land use change on grain yield and the technical efficiency of production. The results show that the grain-sown area is the decisive factor for the increase in grain output in Jiangsu Province. The technical efficiency of grain production in the province has been maintained at a relatively high level since 2000, showing a fluctuating upward trend, and the efficiency value in southern Jiangsu Province is greater than that in central and northern Jiangsu. The analysis of the spatial distribution characteristics of grain production technical efficiency shows that grain production has an agglomeration effect. The regression results showed that the complexity of land use and the density of the cultivated land patch were negatively correlated with grain yield and grain production technical efficiency, while the location of cultivated land was positively correlated with grain yield and grain production technical efficiency. The conclusion of this paper has important policy significance for promoting food production and ensuring food security.

Pig farming profitability and constraints in smallholder households in Rwanda: a case study of Musanze district.

The increasing human population risks food insecurity especially food of animal origin. Pig plays an important role in household income in all production. The main aim of this study was to analyze the pig farming profitability and constraints in smallholder households in Rwanda. A multistage sampling technique was employed for the success of the research. The study was carried out in five sectors of Musnze district. A purposive sampling technique was used to select Musanze district and five sectors. However, a random sampling method was used to have a sample size of 120 pig farmers’ respondents. The cost and returns associated with pig farming production were carried out to determine the profitability of pig production while a stochastic frontier production function was used to determine factors influencing pig farming in small householders using STATA. The findings indicated that men are the majority of the respondents in pig farming production in the study area. The findings of the regression analysis indicated that five factors namely education level, market availability, off-farm generation, feed availability, and access to veterinary services were positive, and statistically significant at P ≤ 0.01 level of probability and influenced pig farming in the study area. The findings also indicated that the Total Revenue (TR), Total Cost (TC), Gross Margin (GM), and Net Farm Income (NFI) were statistically significant at (p < 0.01). The research findings indicated that pig farming is a profitable business in the study area. The result of regression analysis also indicated that the three factors namely income generation, employment opportunities, and new job creation had positive and statistically significant impacts on pig farming in the study area at P ≤ 0.01 level of probability. The findings of this study revealed that the most common constraints for pig farming in smallholder households were the high cost of feeds, inadequate initial capital, feeds sacristy and quality, lack of conservation facilities, pests, and diseases outbreaks, high cost of piglets, lack of farming information, and poor housing. Despite the constraints indicated by different respondents in the study area. Pig farming is an economically profitable business in the study area and it is capable of creating new jobs, enhancing employment opportunities, generating income, and clearly improving the standard livelihood of farmers. Based on the findings of the study, it has been recommended to promote interventions that can help provide initial start-up capital for farmers or marketing groups to help kick-start their farming operations; and to train and equip pig farmers and veterinaries in new technologies and innovations. Promote the analysis of profitability, opportunities, and constraints along the pig value chain as well as to support and improve the underlying business progress or stunting well as to make a good decision.

Urban construction land allocation efficiency of urban agglomerations in China based on a stochastic frontier production function approach

This study employs stochastic frontier production function approach to measure the spatial differences and temporal variations of urban construction land allocation efficiency (UCLAE) and its decomposed indicators in the eastern, central, and western urban agglomerations of China. The collection of construction land price data and the application of the Kumbhakar total factor productivity decomposition method in this study address the research gap in the field of urban land efficiency, specifically the inadequacy of studying the efficiency of construction land allocation. The findings reveal that the UCLAE in the central urban agglomerations demonstrates a stable or upward trend, while the UCLAE in the western and eastern urban agglomerations shows a significant decline, albeit with a decreasing trend that has been curbed. The evolution of urban construction land allocation and its efficiency in different urban agglomerations in China supports the theories of unbalanced growth and inverted U-shaped development. To enhance the UCLAE in Chinese urban agglomerations, it is necessary to address the issue of imbalanced land allocation. This requires not only focusing on the construction land allocation in each urban agglomeration but also considering workforce allocation in the western region and capital allocation in the eastern region. Furthermore, it is crucial to synergistically improve the resource allocative efficiency and technical efficiency of Chinese urban agglomerations.

An Empirical Study of Middle-income Farmers on Millet Production in Kano South Nigeria: A Stochastic Frontier Analysis Approach

This paper aimed at assessing the technical efficiency of millet farmers in Kano south Nigeria using the stochastic frontier production function from the parametric perspective. The determinants of technical efficiency, such as, education, extension access, access to loans, farm size, labour etc, which played a great role in technical efficiency level, are assessed to measure the level of efficiency of the middle-income farmers. 227 middle income farmers were selected for the study and provide an empirical analysis of the efficiency determinants which aim to find a way of improving the millet production and productivity. The results show that middle income farmers’ productivity is very weak ranging from 0.023t/ha to 5.62t/ha, averaging 1.07t/ha. While the technical efficiencies of middle-income farmers range from 0.013 to 0.930 with mean of 0.621. However, the results also indicate that most of the above determinants have negative effect on technical efficiency for the farmers. So, there is need by the government at all levels to review the existing agricultural policy that will favour the reality on the ground which will result in improving the output level of the middle-income farmers with their minimum available input. Efisiensi Alokatif Usahatani Sorgum Di Desa Ondorea Barat Kabupaten Ende

Sorghum plants have the potential to be developed in Ende Regency, this commodity has been passed down from generation to generation and has become an alternative food to replace rice, but its productivity is still relatively low. Research objectives (1) to find out whether sorghum farming has achieved efficiency both technically and allocatively (2) to find out the factors that influence the technical efficiency of sorghum farming. The sample method uses simple random sampling, the sample size is 92 farmers. Data analysis, stochastic frontier production function. Sorghum farming is said to be allocatively efficient if the marginal product value (NPM) of production factors is the same as the price. Factors that influence production, seeds, land area and labor. Maximum technical efficiency value 0.92, minimum 0.70. Average technical efficiency 0.83. NPMx/Px for seeds, land area and labor < 1, the conclusion is that these three variables are not allocatively efficient. Factors that influence technical efficiency are age, farming experience, formal education dummy, farmer group membership and family size.
