Anti-resonant acoustic waveguides enabled tailorable Brillouin scattering on chip

Empowering independent control of optical and acoustic modes and enhancing the photon-phonon interaction, integrated photonics boosts the advancements of on-chip stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). However, achieving acoustic waveguides with low loss, tailorability, and easy fabrication remains a challenge. Here, inspired by the optical anti-resonance in hollow-core fibers and acoustic anti-resonance in cylindrical waveguides, we propose suspended anti-resonant acoustic waveguides (SARAWs) with superior confinement and high selectivity of acoustic modes, supporting both forward and backward SBS on chip. Furthermore, this structure streamlines the design and fabrication processes. Leveraging the advantages of SARAWs, we showcase a series of breakthroughs for SBS within a compact footprint on the silicon-on-insulator platform. For forward SBS, a centimeter-scale SARAW supports a large net gain exceeding 6.4 dB. For backward SBS, we observe an unprecedented Brillouin frequency shift of 27.6 GHz and a mechanical quality factor of up to 1960 in silicon waveguides. This paradigm of acoustic waveguide propels SBS into a new era, unlocking new opportunities in the fields of optomechanics, phononic circuits, and hybrid quantum systems.

Reduction of relative intensity noise in a diamond Raman laser

The relative intensity noise (RIN) characteristics of a continuous-wave diamond Raman laser are investigated for the first time. The results reveal the parasitic stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) that usually occurred with higher-order spatial modes in the diamond Raman resonator is a pivotal factor impacting the Raman longitudinal modes and deteriorating the RIN level. The diamond Raman laser automatically switches to single-longitudinal-mode operation and the RIN level is significantly decreased in the frequency range of 200 Hz to 1 MHz after the parasitic SBS is effectively suppressed through inserting a spatial aperture or a χ(2) nonlinear crystal into the cavity. Due to the introduction of additional nonlinear loss to the high intensity Raman fluctuations and the non-lasing spontaneous Raman modes, the χ(2) nonlinear crystal enables better performance in the RIN-level reduction compared to the spatial aperture which can only achieve SBS inhibition. The RIN reduction routes are well suited for various crystalline Raman media to achieve high power and low intensity noise laser at different wavelengths.

Brillouin light storage for 100 pulse widths

Signal processing based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is limited by the narrow linewidth of the optoacoustic response, which confines many Brillouin applications to continuous wave signals or optical pulses longer than several nanoseconds. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate Brillouin interactions at the 150 ps time scale and a delay for a record 15 ns which corresponds to a delay of 100 pulse widths. This breakthrough experimental result was enabled by the high local gain of the chalcogenide waveguides as the optoacoustic interaction length reduces with pulse width. We successfully transfer 150 ps-long pulses to traveling acoustic waves within a Brillouin-based memory setup. The information encoded in the optical pulses is stored for 15 ns in the acoustic field. We show the retrieval of eight amplitude levels, multiple consecutive pulses, and low distortion in pulse shape. The extension of Brillouin-based storage to the ultra-short pulse regime is an important step for the realization of practical Brillouin-based delay lines and other optical processing applications.

Integrated photonic waveguides for on-chip SBS with OAM modes

Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) is a nonlinear optical process that can provide significant on-chip gain in various materials and platforms. The utilization of chalcogenide and silicon (Si) waveguides has facilitated the advancement of Brillouin lasers and diverse microwave photonic functionalities. The predominant approach has been centered on interactions between conventional guided modes, specifically TE/TM. This study introduces a novel approach that explores diverse guided-wave configurations capable of sustaining SBS with orbital angular momentum modes (OAM). These configurations include a cross-Si waveguide and a silica/chalcogenide waveguide. The simulations examine the forward and backward SBS utilizing OAM modes up to the 4th order in planar on-chip waveguides. A maximum on-chip SBS gain of up to ∼540W−1m−1 has been observed for pump and Stokes OAM mode numbers satisfying the topological charge conservation law. This OAM multiplexing approach can open new avenues for on-chip integrated nonlinear photonics for various applications, especially where pump and signal beam filtering or separation are critical.

Spectral characteristics of laser plasma instabilities with broadband laser

Abstract Recent experimental progress regarding broadband laser-plasma instabilities (LPIs) showed that a 0.6% laser bandwidth can reduce backscatters of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) at normal incidence [Phys. Rev. Lett., 132, 035102 (2024)]. In this paper, we present further discussion on the spectral distributions of the scatters developed by broadband LPIs, in addition to a brief validation of the effectiveness of bandwidth on LPIs mitigation at oblique incidence. SBS backscatter has a small redshift in the broadband case contrary to the blueshift with narrowband laser, which may be explained by the self-cross beam energy transfer between the various frequency components within the bandwidth. SRS backscatter spectrum presents a peak at a longer wavelength in the broadband case compared to the short one in the narrowband case, which is possibly attributed to the mitigation effect of bandwidth on filaments at underdense plasmas. The three-halves harmonic emission (3ω/2) has a one-peak spectral distribution under the broadband condition, which is different from the two-peak distribution under the narrowband condition, and that may be related to the spectral mixing of different frequency components within the bandwidth if the main sources of the two are both two-plasmon decay.

3.05 kW, 13.7 GHz linewidth fiber amplifier based on PRBS phase modulation for SBS suppression

In this paper, we establish a multi-stage fiber amplifier with pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) phase modulation. The stimulated Brillouin gain spectra of the main amplifier with both the unmodulated and pseudo-random binary sequence phase modulated configuration are measured (with corresponding output power), and the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) threshold is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The pseudo-random binary sequence phase modulation parameters are optimized by theoretical simulation. With a two-stage preamplifier chain and a counter-pumping main amplifier stage, a maximum 3.05 kW output power with a slope efficiency of 85.9% is obtained experimentally. The central wavelength of the fiber amplifier is 1050 nm, associated with a full-width at half-maximum linewidth of 13.7 GHz. The stimulated Brillouin scattering reflectivity is below 0.01% at 3.05 kW at 13.7 GHz, which indicates that stimulated Brillouin scattering can be suppressed efficiently at this power and linewidth level.

Laser-induced damages to charge coupled devices with combined nanosecond/picosecond short-pulse lasers

The research on laser induced breakdown mechanism of charge coupled devices (CCDs) brings new insights into photoelectric countermeasures. So far combined laser irradiation has been proved to be a more effective measure to destroy CCD. Due to the limitation of short-pulse laser combination method, the mechanism of CCD damage caused by combined short-pulse laser remains unexplored. Here, the distribution of temperature and stress field during the interaction between a combined short-pulse laser and a CCD is analyzed. A nanosecond/picosecond combined short-pulse laser system based on Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) pulse compression technique is designed. The damage threshold (DT) and properties of CCD by combined laser irradiation are characterized. The results show that the complete DT of combined laser induced CCD breakdown is only 103 mJ/cm2, which is only 44% of that of picosecond laser. The main cause of combined short-pulse laser induced CCD breakdown is short circuit (SC) between silicon substrate and silicon electrode.

Ultralow noise microwave synthesis via difference frequency division of a Brillouin resonator

Low phase noise microwave oscillators are at the center of a multitude of applications that span the gamut of photonics and electronics. Within this space, optically derived approaches to microwave frequency synthesis are particularly compelling owing to their unique combination of ultrawideband frequency access and the potential for resiliency to temperature and environmental perturbation via common-mode noise rejection. We demonstrate here an optical frequency divider that uses the 30 terahertz frequency gap between two stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) lasers as the basis for frequency division. The resulting microwave signal, centered at 10 GHz frequency, exhibits exceptionally low phase noise levels of −95dBc/Hz and −110dBc/Hz at 10 Hz and 100 Hz frequency offset, respectively. Moreover, the two SBS lasers, generated from a common fiber resonator, exhibit a high degree of correlated noise cancellation in their frequency difference. We measure 16.1 dB of noise rejection against intentionally applied vibrations, thus showcasing a promising pathway towards portable and robust ultralow noise photonic-microwave synthesis.

Modeling stimulated Brillouin backscatter from outer-cone quads across multiple inertial confinement fusion hohlraum designs

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is a potential risk for laser damage in the experiments carried out at the National Ignition Facility (NIF), and by altering the energy deposition pattern in hohlraums, it affects the symmetry of indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion implosions. We have surveyed backward SBS on outer-cone quads across NIF integrated hohlraums of various platforms numerically, using three-dimensional (3D) simulations with the backscatter code pF3D [Berger et al. Phys. Plasmas 5, 4337 (1998)] and ray-based gain calculations. Simulated reflected powers and energies, as well as the spectrum of reflected light all compare favorably with measurements. Ray-based calculations of exponential SBS amplification (“gain”), which assume a strongly damped plasma wave and steady-state response, are performed using a novel method that includes the 3D speckled field of the laser that drives SBS. This approach is useful for understanding qualitative differences between hohlraum designs and identifying regions susceptible to SBS within hohlraums. Quantitatively, gains are not found to correlate with SBS reflectivities in 3D, necessitating fully wave-based calculations that naturally include diffraction and various temporal dependencies.

A channelized broadband and high-resolution microwave instantaneous multi-frequency measurement system based on Fabry-Perot Filter and Stimulated Brillouin Scattering

A broadband high-resolution microwave instantaneous multi-frequency measurement (IMFM) system based on a Fabry-Perot filter (FPF) and Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) is proposed. In the system, the 14-line flat optical frequency comb (OFC) in the first branch is input to dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) for carrier suppressed single sideband modulation (CS-SSB), so that the microwave signal to be measured is loaded onto the sideband of the 14-line OFC. The FPF is employed for periodic filtering to roughly determine the frequency band of the captured microwave signal. Subsequently, the demultiplexer (De-mux) is utilized to channelize the captured frequency band, which serves as a pump light input to the high nonlinear fiber (HNLF). By setting the center frequency spacing between the OFCs in the second and third branches with the channelized pump light in the first branch is equal to the Brillouin frequency shift, the frequencies of the microwave signal under measurement are determined based on the fine frequency selection characteristic of the SBS effect. This achieves an enhancement in measurement resolution while ensuring measurement bandwidth. Simulation experiments indicate that by adjusting the frequency shifter and center frequency of the FPF, the proposed IFM system can realize measurement ranges of 0.6–13.5 GHz, 13.6–26.5 GHz, and 26.6–39.5 GHz, the measurement resolution is 0.1 GHz, and the measurement error is ±0.05 GHz.

Microwave photonics frequency measurement with improved accuracy based on an artificial neural network.

Photonics-assisted techniques for microwave frequency measurement (MFM) show great potential for overcoming electronic bottlenecks, with wild applications in radar and communication. The MFM system based on the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect can measure the frequency of multiple high-frequency and wide-band signals. However, the accuracy of the MFM system in multi-tone frequency measurement is constrained by the SBS bandwidth and the nonlinearity of the system. To resolve this problem, a method based on an artificial neural network (ANN) is suggested, which can establish a nonlinear mapping between the measured two-tone signal spectra and the theoretical frequencies. Through simulation verification, the ANN optimized frequencies within the range of (0.5, 27) GHz of the MFM system show 79%, 76%, 70%, 44% reduction in errors separately under four spectral signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) conditions, 20dB, 15dB, 10dB, 0dB, and the frequency resolution is improved from 30MHz to 10MHz.

Determining the Out-of-Plane Longitudinal Sound Speed in GeS by Broadband Time-Domain Brillouin Scattering.

Over the past decade, two-dimensional (2D) layered semiconducting materials, with their distinctive structures and unique physicochemical properties, have attracted attention for potential applications in photonics and optoelectronics. In this study, we utilized time-domain broadband Brillouin scattering on a single germanium monosulfide (GeS) crystal to determine the out-of-plane longitudinal sound speed, evaluated at vL = (4035 ± 200) m/s. The reported results demonstrate the effectiveness of this nondestructive, all-optical technique for measuring the elastic properties in fragile 2D layered materials and provide the value of the out-of-plane compressive elastic constant, C = (69 ± 7) GPa.

Loading-effect-based three-dimensional microfabrication empowers on-chip Brillouin optomechanics.

The acousto-optic interaction known as stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) has emerged as a fundamental principle for realizing crucial components and functionalities in integrated photonics. However, the main challenge of integrating Brillouin devices is how to effectively confine both optical and acoustic waves. Apart from that, the manufacturing processes for these devices need to be compatible with standard fabrication platforms and streamlined to facilitate their large-scale integration. Here, we demonstrate a novel, to the best of our knowledge, suspended nanowire structure that can tightly confine photons and phonons. Furthermore, tailored for this structure, we introduce a loading-effect-based three-dimensional microfabrication technique, compatible with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. This innovative technique allows for the fabrication of the entire structure using a single-step lithography exposure, significantly streamlining the fabrication process. Leveraging this structure and fabrication scheme, we have achieved a Brillouin gain coefficient of 1100 W-1m-1 on the silicon-on-insulator platform within a compact footprint. It can support a Brillouin net gain over 4.1 dB with modest pump powers. We believe that this structure can significantly advance the development of SBS on chip, unlocking new opportunities for a large-scale integration of Brillouin-based photonic devices.

Impacts of spatial symmetries on stimulated Brillouin scatterings in nanoscale silicon waveguides: a theoretical and numerical study considering material anisotropies.

Fully considering the mechanical and photoelastic anisotropies of monocrystalline silicon, the impacts of spatial symmetries on the stimulated Brillouin scatterings (SBSs) in nanoscale suspended silicon waveguides are studied theoretically and numerically based on group theory. First, starting from an assumption that the principal material coordinate system can be arbitrarily orientated in a waveguide with fixed geometry, the silicon waveguides are systematically classified into a number of point groups according to their spatial symmetry features. Thereafter, the symmetry characteristics of physical fields and SBS opto-mechanical coupling characteristics in the silicon waveguides belonging to different point groups are further examined, and the major new findings can be summarized as follows: The SBS opto-mechanical couplings in several kinds of silicon waveguides with certain nontrivial symmetry features exhibit relatively predictable behaviors in that the opto-mechanical coupling coefficients can be deterministically vanishing or nonvanishing under very few constraints, which can thus serve as general symmetry selection rules for SBSs in suspended silicon waveguides. The results obtained in the present study could be a useful theoretical reference for the design of novel SBS-active silicon photonic devices.

Enhancing Mechanical Stimulated Brillouin Scattering Imaging with Physics‐Driven Model Selection

AbstractBrillouin microscopy (BM) is an emerging technique for all‐optical mechanical imaging without the need for physical contact with the sample or for an external mechanical stimulus. However, BM often retrieves a single Brillouin frequency shift for multiple mechanically different materials of structures and/or in regions—sufficiently larger than the phonon wavelength—inside the volume and its surroundings, resulting in significantly limited mechanical specificity in the Brillouin shift images produced. Here, a new physics‐driven model selection framework is developed based on information theory and a physical‐statistical overfit Brillouin water peak threshold that enables the robust identification of single‐ and multi‐peak Brillouin signatures in the sample pixels. The model selection framework is applied to Brillouin data of material interfaces and living NIH/3T3 cells measured by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) microscopy, facilitating the quantification of the Brillouin frequency shift of materials in different regions of the sample and significantly improving mechanical specificity compared with the standard single peak fitting analysis.

SBS mitigation by sinusoidal phase modulation of a 1572 nm all-fiber amplifier for lidar CO2 sensing.

Lidar C O 2 sensing can be performed by 1572nm pulsed laser sources. This work presents the development of a fiber amplifier at this wavelength emitting 1µs FWHM Gaussian pulses at a repetition rate of 7.5kHz. We obtain the mitigation of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) by shaping the seed laser spectrum into a frequency comb with sinusoidal phase modulation. This frequency comb is compatible with a coherent dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) method for a targeted lidar C O 2 sensing application. The effect of the harmonics spacing and relative intensity on the SBS threshold is studied. Laser pulses are amplified up to 182µJ (182W peak power) from a single-mode erbium (Er) and ytterbium (Yb) co-doped fiber. Those results hold promise for seeding large mode area Er-Yb co-doped fiber power amplifiers.

Upconversion Photonic Doppler Velocimetry Based on Stimulated Brillouin Scattering

Optical up-conversion photonic Doppler velocimetry (PDV) based on stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) with an all-fiber link structure is proposed in this article. Because SBS limits the laser power transmitted by a fiber over long distances, the probe does not have enough outgoing light to reach the measured surface and cannot receive the signal light. Traditionally, SBS is avoided, but it is a phase-conjugated light and shifts down relative to the source light, so it can be used as a reference light in the laser interference structure to achieve up-conversion heterodyne velocimetry. Compared with general homodyne velocimetry (DPS), SBS-PDV naturally upconverts and has more interference fringes and higher resolution at low-speed measurement. In the gas multiple reflection impact compression experiment, the velocity measurement results of SBS-PDV and dual-laser heterodyne Velocimetry (DLHV) are basically consistent, and the accuracy is better than 0.8%. Due to its coaxial heterodyne optical path, this kind of photonic Doppler velocimetry is suitable for low-velocity and long-distance practical applications in the field of shock wave physics.
