Modeling stimulated Brillouin backscatter from outer-cone quads across multiple inertial confinement fusion hohlraum designs

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is a potential risk for laser damage in the experiments carried out at the National Ignition Facility (NIF), and by altering the energy deposition pattern in hohlraums, it affects the symmetry of indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion implosions. We have surveyed backward SBS on outer-cone quads across NIF integrated hohlraums of various platforms numerically, using three-dimensional (3D) simulations with the backscatter code pF3D [Berger et al. Phys. Plasmas 5, 4337 (1998)] and ray-based gain calculations. Simulated reflected powers and energies, as well as the spectrum of reflected light all compare favorably with measurements. Ray-based calculations of exponential SBS amplification (“gain”), which assume a strongly damped plasma wave and steady-state response, are performed using a novel method that includes the 3D speckled field of the laser that drives SBS. This approach is useful for understanding qualitative differences between hohlraum designs and identifying regions susceptible to SBS within hohlraums. Quantitatively, gains are not found to correlate with SBS reflectivities in 3D, necessitating fully wave-based calculations that naturally include diffraction and various temporal dependencies.

Dispersion engineering in a Brillouin fiber laser cavity for Kerr frequency comb formation

We conduct numerical and experimental investigations on Kerr comb generation in a nonlinear and non-reciprocal fiber cavity by leveraging both stimulated Brillouin backscattering and cascaded four-wave mixing. By engineering the net cavity dispersion to be either normal or anomalous, we enable the formation of diverse patterns and localized structures in the cavity field. The comb’s properties depend crucially on the mismatch between the frequency spacing of the bichromatic pump and the free spectral range of the Brillouin laser cavity in both cases. Particularly, in the anomalous regime, adjusting this parameter yields coherent, stable frequency combs in the modulation instability regime. This allows control and expansion of the spectral bandwidth up to 2 THz in normal dispersion and to 6 THz under anomalous net dispersion. This versatile and easily reconfigurable method holds potential for applications in high-speed communications and microwave synthesis.

The effects of incident light wavelength difference on the collective stimulated Brillouin scattering in plasmas

The first laser–plasma interaction experiment using lasers of eight beams grouped into one octad has been conducted on the Shenguang Octopus facility. Although each beam intensity is below its individual threshold for stimulated Brillouin backscattering (SBS), collective behaviors are excited to enhance the octad SBS. In particular, when two-color/cone lasers with wavelength separation 0.3 nm are used, the backward SBS reflectivities show novel behavior in which beams of longer wavelength achieve higher SBS gain. This property of SBS can be attributed to the rotation of the wave vectors of common ion acoustic waves due to the competition of detunings between geometrical angle and wavelength separation. This mechanism is confirmed using massively parallel supercomputer simulations with the three-dimensional laser–plasma interaction code LAP3D.

The effects of multispecies Hohlraum walls on stimulated Brillouin scattering, Hohlraum dynamics, and beam propagation

Experiments and simulations have been conducted to investigate the efficacy of Ta2O5-lined Hohlraum walls at reducing stimulated Brillouin backscattering (SBS) as well as any subsequent effects on the Hohlraum dynamics and capsule implosions in indirect drive experiments at the National Ignition Facility. Using a 1.1 MJ 400 TW, 351 nm, shaped laser pulse, we measure a 5× reduction in SBS power in the peak of the pulse from the wall on the outer 50° cone beams. The SBS spectrum indicates a reduction in the high-Z spectral signature when using multispecies wall materials. Detailed hydrodynamic simulations were performed using different heat conduction models with flux limiters. Additional simulations were performed on the plasma maps using the 3D parallel paraxial code pF3D to compare backscatter powers between the pure Au and Ta2O5-lined Hohlraums. Further analysis, using hydrodynamically equivalent plasmas, shows that the SBS reduction is clearly a result of the added ion Landau damping caused by the oxygen ions and not from differences in plasma conditions. The experimental and simulation results also show an increase in the wall plasma expansion when using the Ta2O5 liner leading to a 70% more oblate implosion.

Low mode implosion symmetry sensitivity in low gas-fill NIF cylindrical hohlraums

Achieving an efficient capsule implosion in National Ignition Facility indirect-drive target experiments requires symmetric hohlraum x-ray drive for the duration of the laser pulse. This is commonly achieved using two-sided two-cone laser irradiation of cylindrical hohlraums that, in principle, can zero the time average of all spherical harmonic asymmetry modes <6 as well as the time dependence of the usually dominant mode 2. In practice, experimental evidence indicates that maintaining symmetric drive becomes limited late in the pulse due to the inward expansion of the hohlraum wall and outward expansion of the capsule ablator plasmas impairing the propagation of the inner-cone laser beams. This effect is enhanced in hohlraums employing low gas-fill, now used almost exclusively as these provide the highest performing implosions and reduce Stimulated Brillouin and Raman backscatter losses, since the gas plasma provides less back pressure to limit blow-in of the hohlraum wall and capsule ablator plasmas. In order to understand this dynamic behavior, we combined multi-keV X-ray imaging of the wall and imploded fuel plasmas as we changed a single parameter at a time: hohlraum gas-fill, laser outer cone picket energy, radius of high density carbon capsules used, and laser beam polar and azimuthal pointing geometry. We developed a physics-based multi-parameter experimental scaling to explain the results that extend prior scalings and compare those to radiation hydrodynamic simulations to develop a more complete picture of how hohlraum, capsule, and laser parameters affect pole vs equator drive symmetry.

Suppression of auto-resonant stimulated Brillouin scattering in supersonic flowing plasmas by different forms of incident lasers**Project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant Nos.11875091 and 11975059) and the Science Challenge Project, China (Grant No. TZ2016005).

In supersonic flowing plasmas, the auto-resonant behavior of ion acoustic waves driven by stimulated Brillouin backscattering is self-consistently investigated. A nature of absolute instability appears in the evolution of the stimulated Brillouin backscattering. By adopting certain form of incident lights combined by two perpendicular linear polarization lasers or polarization rotation lasers, the absolute instability is suppressed significantly. The suppression of auto-resonant stimulated Brillouin scattering is verified with the fully kinetic Vlasov code.

One-dimensional steady-state model for stimulated Raman and Brillouin backscatter processes in laser-irradiated plasmas

AbstractA one-dimensional steady-state model for stimulated Raman backscatter (SRS) and stimulated Brillouin backscatter (SBS) processes in laser-irradiated plasmas is presented. Based on a novel “predictor-corrector” method, the model is capable to deal with broadband scattered light and inhomogeneous plasmas, exhibiting robustness and high efficiency. Influences of the electron density and temperature on the linear gains of both SRS and SBS are investigated, which indicates that the SRS gain is more sensitive to the electron density and temperature than that of the SBS. For the low-density case, the SBS dominates the scattering process, while the SRS exhibits much higher reflectivity in the high-density case. The nonlinear saturation mechanisms and competition between SRS and SBS are included in our model by a phenomenological method. The typical anti-correlation between SRS and SBS versus electron density is reproduced in the model. Calculations of the reflectivities are qualitatively in agreement with the typical results of experiments and simulations.

Simulation studies of strongly turbulent stimulated Brillouin backscattering during ionospheric heating

ABSTRACTRecent experimental observations of stimulated electromagnetic emissions (SEE) during ionospheric heating have shown that the SEE spectrum produced as a result of the stimulated Brillouin backscatter (SBS) instability is structurally very different for low and high pump power regimes. Initial results from electromagnetic Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulation studies conducted to investigate the difference in the SBS SEE spectrum for the two pump power regimes are presented. Simulation results presented here are used to gain insight into ionospheric heating experiments at the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) facility in which the pump power either linearly increased from a low power to the maximum available power, or was maintained at the maximum available power during the heating cycle. The observations show (1) a distinct, narrow SEE spectral line downshifted from the pump frequency, due to SBS, for the low power case and (2) a broad, aggregate SBS SEE structure downshifted from the pump frequency for the high power heating. In general, the spectra of the backscattered EM field obtained from PIC simulations for the two pump power regimes show correspondence with the HAARP observational data. Simulations predict that the broad spectral structure for the high power case results from strong ion acoustic (IA) turbulence. Further characteristics of the strong turbulence include cavity development in the ion density in which (I) strong long lifespan EM waves are trapped (II) short-lived ES waves are trapped, and (III) high temperature electrons exist.

Self-focusing of cosh-Gaussian laser beam and its effect on the excitation of ion-acoustic wave and stimulated Brillouin backscattering in collisionless plasma

An analytical and numerical study has been carried out for self-focusing of an intense cosh-Gaussian laser beam in collisionless plasma and its impact on the excitation of ion-acoustic wave and stimulated Brillouin backscattering process. The analytical model has been developed under Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin and paraxial ray approximations. The nonlinearities of ponderomotive force on electron and the relativistic oscillation of the electron mass have been used in this study. The nonlinear differential equations have been set up for the beam width parameters of the main beam, ion-acoustic wave, backscattered wave and back reflectivity of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). These equations have been solved numerically for different values of decentred parameter (b), relative plasma density (ωp0/ω0) and incident laser intensity (a). The results have been compared with only relativistic nonlinearity and Gaussian profile of laser beam. The focusing of laser beam, ion-acoustic wave and scattered wave are found to be strong under relativistic-ponderomotive regime compared to only relativistic regime. Further, it is observed that focusing/intensity of main laser beam, ion acoustic wave and SBS back reflectivity increases with increasing the values of b and ωp0/ω0. Itis also found that back reflectivity of SBS process gets suppressed with the increase in the value of a. This study may be useful in laser induced fusion scheme where back scattering of SBS plays very important role.

Investigation on laser plasma instability of the outer ring beams on SGIII laser facility

In order to study the laser plasma instabilities (LPIs) in the context of some novel six-side laser-driven indirect designs like the six-cylinder-port hohlraum and the three-axis cylindrical hohlraum, where the laser beams inject in hohlraum with a large angle. LPI experiments in cylindrical hohlraum with only outer beams were designed and performed based on the current laser arrangement condition of SGIII laser facility for the first time. Stimulated Brillouin backscatter (SBS) was found to be the dominant instability with high instantaneous reflectivity in experiments. A typical feature was obtained in the time-resolved spectra of SBS, which maintained similar for different laser intensities of the interaction beam. The experimental data are analyzed by the hydrodynamic simulations combined with HLIP code, which is based on the ray-tracing model. By analysis of experimental data, it is argued that the mixture of gas and Au in the region of their interface is important to SBS, which indicates the need for the mixture model between the filled gas and the high Z plasma from hohlraum wall in the hydrodynamic simulations. Nonlinear saturation of SBS as well as the smoothed beam are also discussed here. Our effective considerations of the ions pervasion effect and the smoothed beam provide utilitarian ways for improvement of the current ray-tracing method.

Auto-resonant stimulated Brillouin backscattering in supersonic flowing plasmas by fully kinetic Vlasov simulations

The auto-resonant behavior of ion acoustic waves (IAWs) driven by stimulated Brillouin backscattering in supersonic flowing plasmas is self-consistently investigated by Vlasov simulations. Vlasov simulations show that the peak amplitude of the auto-resonant growing IAWs in the positive flow gradient is much larger than that in the negative flow gradient, which is contrary to the previous analysis (Wang et al 2018 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 60 025016). It is found that the IAW phase velocity remains unchanged in supersonic flowing plasmas, which significantly influences wave-particle interaction by changing the Landau damping and the coefficient of the kinetic nonlinear frequency shift in different position. As a result, the Landau damping of IAWs in the peak region in the negative case is stronger than that in the positive case, which has never been considered before. After considering its effects on particle trapping and, particularly, Landau damping of IAWs, theoretical predictions from three-wave mode equations are consistent with results by Vlasov simulations.

80 km Fading Free Phase-Sensitive Reflectometry Based on Multi-Carrier NLFM Pulse Without Distributed Amplification

Long range phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (ϕ-OTDR) sensing mainly employs distributed amplification in the sensing fiber. It requires the light to be injected into both ends of the sensing fiber, which reduces the degree of freedom in embedding the fiber into structures. To overcome this problem, the key factors that affects the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in ϕ-OTDR system based on matched filter is analyzed thoroughly, and a single-ended long-range ϕ-OTDR that does not require distributed amplification is proposed. In this system, two key techniques are adopted for SNR improvement. To boost the pulse energy and suppress the self-phase modulation, the distortion of the amplified pulse is rectified by using iterative predistortion method; to mitigate the influence of the interference fading and the stimulated Brillouin backscattering, a three-carrier pulse is employed. In combination with the non-linear frequency modulation technique which yields a 42.7 dB side lobe suppression ratio, these approaches guarantee an achievable ϕ-OTDR of 80 km sensing range, 2.7 m spatial resolution, 49.6 dB dynamic range in the experiment. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is the first time that a ϕ-OTDR without optical amplification in the sensing fiber is realized over such a long sensing range.

Comparison of longitudinal and transverse smoothing by spectral dispersion on stimulated Brillouin backscattering in inertial confinement fusion plasmas

In the context of inertial confinement fusion, optical smoothing is a technique used to provide laser irradiation as homogeneous as possible. It is required for limiting the development of laser-plasma instabilities, in particular, stimulated Brillouin backscattering (SBS). Here, we carefully compare longitudinal and transverse smoothing by spectral dispersion in an ideal smoothing configuration for each case. With 3D codes, we have simulated SBS in a gold plasma. We show that, as opposed to common belief, the time evolution of the SBS reflectivity exhibits some differences between both smoothing schemes. First, the asymptotic values of the saturation levels are not quite the same. With a simple ray description and computing the SBS gain for each ray, we were able to explain this difference. Moreover, the dynamics of SBS are also somewhat different. We have shown that SBS dynamics are driven by the time evolution of speckle properties and in particular by the effective interaction length between the Brillouin backscattered light and the hot-spots. This effective interaction length depends both on the longitudinal velocity and on the length of the hot-spots. As a matter of fact, synchronizing the effective interaction lengths of both smoothing schemes also synchronizes the backscattering curves before reaching the saturation level.

Investigation on the Influence of Humidity on Stimulated Brillouin Backscattering in Perfluorinated Polymer Optical Fibers.

In this paper perfluorinated graded-index polymer optical fibers are characterized with respect to the influence of relative humidity changes on spectral transmission absorption and Rayleigh backscattering. The hygroscopic and thermal expansion coefficient of the fiber are determined to be = (7.4 ± 0.1) %r.h.−1 and = (22.7 ± 0.3) K−1, respectively. The influence of humidity on the Brillouin backscattering power and linewidth are presented for the first time to our knowledge. The Brillouin backscattering power at a pump wavelength of 1319 nm is affected by temperature and humidity. The Brillouin linewidth is observed to be a function of temperature but not of humidity. The strain coefficient of the BFS is determined to be (−146.5 ± 0.9) MHz/% for a wavelength of 1319 nm within a strain range from 0.1% to 1.5%. The obtained results demonstrate that the humidity-induced Brillouin frequency shift is predominantly caused by the swelling of the fiber over-cladding that leads to fiber straining.

Generation of high-power few-cycle lasers via Brillouin-based plasma amplification

Strong coupling stimulated Brillouin backscattering (sc-SBS) in plasma is potentially an efficient method of amplifying laser pulses to reach exawatt powers. Here, we report on a new regime of brillouin-based plasma amplification, producing an amplified pulse with a duration of 5 fs and unfocused intensity of 6 × 1017 W/cm2. The results are obtained from 2D particle-in-cell simulations, using two circularly polarized pump and seed pulse with Gaussian transverse profile, both at an intensity of 2.74 × 1016 W/cm2, counter-propagating in a 0.3nc plasma. The significant compression of amplified seed is achieved as a result of sc-SBS amplification as well as additional compression by the interplay between self-phase modulation and negative group delay dispersion. We show that the amplified seed retains high beam qualities since the filamentation can be prevented due to the fast compression. This scheme may pave the way for few-cycle laser pulses to reach exawatt or even zetawatt regime.

Stimulated Brillouin backscattering of hollow Gaussian laser beam in collisionless plasma under relativistic–ponderomotive regime

AbstractStimulated Brillouin backscattering of an intense hollow Gaussian laser beam (HGLB) from collisionless plasma has been investigated under relativistic–ponderomotive regime. The main feature of considered hollow Gaussian laser beam is having the same power at different beam orders with null intensity at the center. Backscattered radiation is generated due to nonlinear interaction between main beam (pump beam) with pre-excited ion acoustic wave (IAW). Modified coupled equations has been set up for the beam width parameters of the main beam, ion-acoustic wave, back-scattered wave, and back reflectivity of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) with the help of the Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin approximation, fluid equations and paraxial theory approach. These coupled equations are solved analytically and numerically to study the laser intensity in the plasma, the variation of amplitude of the excited IAW and back reflectivity of SBS. The back reflectivity of SBS is found to be highly sensitive to the order of the HGLB, intensity of main laser beam, and plasma density for typical laser and plasma parameters. The focusing of main laser beam (hollow Gaussian) and IAW significantly affected the back reflectivity of SBS. The results show that the self-focusing and back reflectivity is enhanced for higher order modes of HGLB.

Experimental study on the incident-angle-dependent laser coupling features of polystyrene targets

Laser-produced plasmas have attracted great interest due to their potential utility in wide-ranging applications, especially in the field of inertial confinement fusion (ICF). For direct-driven ICF, laser coupling with polystyrene targets is a crucial and fundamental problem. In addition, oblique incidence is also a common phenomenon for laser facilities with multiple beams. It is necessary to evaluate the effects of oblique incidence on the laser coupling features relevant to the direct-driven ICF. Experiments using an intense nanosecond flat-top laser at around W cm–2 to irradiate polystyrene planar targets from three different incidence angles have been performed on the Shenguang-III prototype laser facility. The time-integrated absolute values of the full aperture backscatter (FABS), near backscatter scattering (NBS), and the x-ray conversion efficiency (CE) have been measured quantitatively. According to the experimental results, with the increase of the incidence angle, the percentage of the stimulated Brillouin backscatter and the overall x-ray CE decreased while the stimulated Raman backscatter fraction rose. Theoretical analyses based on hydrodynamic simulations and linear theory were qualitatively consistent with the experimental results. In addition, the specularly reflected light was also observed at 30° laser oblique incidence.

Dynamical transition between weak and strong coupling in Brillouin laser pulse amplification

Short laser pulse amplification via stimulated Brillouin backscattering in plasma is considered. Previous work distinguishes between the weakly and strongly coupled regime and treats them separately. It is shown here that such a separation is not generally applicable because strong and weak coupling interaction regimes are entwined with each other. An initially weakly coupled amplification scenario may dynamically transform into strong coupling. This happens when the local seed amplitude grows and thus triggers the strongly driven plasma response. On the other hand, when in a strong coupling scenario, the pump pulse gets depleted, and its amplitude might drop below the strong coupling threshold. This may cause significant changes in the final seed pulse shape. Furthermore, experimentally used pump pulses are typically Gaussian-shaped. The intensity threshold for strong coupling may only be exceeded around the maximum and not in the wings of the pulse. Also here, a description valid in both strong and weak coupling regimes is required. We propose such a unified treatment which allows us, in particular, to study the dynamic transition between weak and strong coupling. Consequences for the pulse forms of the amplified seed are discussed.

Optimization of interaction conditions for efficient short laser pulse amplification by stimulated Brillouin scattering in the strongly coupled regime

Plasma amplification of low energy, a short (∼100–500 fs) laser pulse by an energetic long (∼10 ps) pulse via strong coupling Stimulated Brillouin Backscattering is investigated with an extensive analysis of one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Parameters relevant to nowadays experimental conditions are investigated. The obtained seed pulse spectra are analyzed as a function of the interaction conditions such as plasma profile, pulses delay, and seed or pulse duration. The factors affecting the amount of energy transferred are determined, and the competition between Brillouin-based amplification and parasitic Raman backscattering is analyzed, leading to the optimization of the interaction conditions.
