Quantifying the Effects of Known Unknowns on Inferred High-redshift Galaxy Properties: Burstiness, IMF, and Nebular Physics

The era of the James Webb Space Telescope ushers stellar population models into uncharted territories, particularly at the high-redshift frontier. In a companion paper, we apply the Prospector Bayesian framework to jointly infer galaxy redshifts and stellar population properties from broadband photometry as part of the UNCOVER survey. Here we present a comprehensive error budget in spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling. Using a sample selected to have photometric redshifts higher than 9, we quantify the systematic shifts stemming from various model choices in inferred stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), and age. These choices encompass different timescales for changes in the star formation history (SFH), nonuniversal stellar initial mass functions (IMF), and the inclusion of variable nebular abundances, gas density, and ionizing photon budget. We find that the IMF exerts the strongest influence on the inferred properties: the systematic uncertainties can be as much as 1 dex, 2–5 times larger than the formal reported uncertainties in mass and SFR, and importantly, exceed the scatter seen when using different SED fitting codes. Although the assumptions on the lower end of the IMF induce degeneracy, our findings suggest that a common practice in the literature of assessing uncertainties in SED-fitting processes by comparing multiple codes is substantively underestimating the true systematic uncertainty. Highly stochastic SFHs change the inferred SFH by much larger than the formal uncertainties, and introduce ∼0.8 dex systematics in SFR averaged over a short timescale and ∼0.3 dex systematics in average age. Finally, employing a flexible nebular emission model causes ∼0.2 dex systematic increase in mass and SFR, comparable to the formal uncertainty. This paper constitutes an initial step toward a complete uncertainty estimate in SED modeling.

Deep learning prediction of galaxy stellar populations in the low-redshift Universe

ABSTRACT The increasing size and complexity of data provided by both ongoing and planned galaxy surveys greatly contribute to our understanding of galaxy evolution. Deep learning methods are particularly well suited for handling the complex and massive data. We train a convolutional neural network (CNN) to simultaneously predict the stellar populations in galaxies: age, metallicity, colour excess E(B − V), and central velocity dispersion (VD) using spectra with redshift ≤ 0.3 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. This is the first time to use spectra based on deep learning to derive the four galaxy properties. The testing results show that our CNN predictions of galaxy properties are in good consistent with values by the traditional stellar population synthesis method with little scatters (0.11 dex for age and metallicity, 0.018 mag for E(B − V), and 31 km s−1 for VD). In terms of the computational time, our method reduces by more than 10 times compared to traditional method. We further evaluate the performance of our CNN prediction model using spectra with different signal-to-noise ratios (S/Ns), redshifts, and spectral classes. We find that our model generally exhibits good performance, although the errors at different S/Ns, redshifts, and spectral classes vary slightly. The impact of bar origin and morphology on stellar migration

ABSTRACT Different mechanisms driving bar structure formation indicate that bar origins should be distinguishable in the stellar populations of galaxies. To study how these origins affect different bar morphologies and impact stellar orbits and migration, we analyse three simulated discs which are representative of bar formation under isolated evolution motivated by disc instability, and interaction-driven tidal development. The first isolated disc and the tidally driven disc produce similar bar structure, while the second isolated disc, generated by the tidal initial condition without the companion, is visibly dissimilar. Changes to radial and vertical positions, angular momentum in the disc-plane, orbital eccentricity, and the subsequent disc metallicities are assessed, as is the dependence on stellar age and formation radii. Bar origin is distinguishable, with the tidal disc displaying larger migration overall, higher metallicity difference between the inner and outer disc, and a population of inner disc stars displaced to large radii and below the disc-plane. The effect of closest approach on populations of stars formed before, after, and during this period is evident. However, bar morphology is also found to be a significant factor in the evolution of disc stellar properties, with similar bars producing similar traits in migration tendency with radius, particularly in vertical stellar motion and in the evolution of central metallicity features.

The Way to Quench: Galaxy Evolution in A2142

We show how the star formation activity of galaxies is progressively inhibited from the outer region to the center of the massive cluster A2142. From an extended spectroscopic redshift survey of 2239 galaxies covering a circular area of radius ∼11 Mpc from the cluster center, we extract a sample of 333 galaxies with known stellar mass, star formation rate, and spectral index D n 4000. We use the Blooming Tree algorithm to identify the substructures of the cluster and separate the galaxy sample into substructure galaxies, halo galaxies, and outskirt galaxies. The substructure and halo galaxies are cluster members, whereas the outskirt galaxies are only weakly gravitationally bound to the cluster. For the cluster members, the star formation rate per stellar mass decreases with decreasing distance R from the cluster center. Similarly, the spectral index D n 4000 increases with R, indicating an increasing average age of the stellar population in galaxies closer to the cluster center. In addition, star formation in substructure galaxies is generally more active than in halo galaxies and less active than in outskirt galaxies, proving that substructures tend to slow down the transition between field galaxies and cluster galaxies. We finally show that most actively star-forming galaxies are within the cluster infall region, whereas most galaxies in the central region are quiescent.

On the likelihoods of finding very metal-poor (and old) stars in the Milky Way’s disc, bulge, and halo

ABSTRACT Recent observational studies have uncovered a small number of very metal-poor (VMP) stars with cold kinematics in the Galactic disc and bulge. However, their origins remain enigmatic. We select a total of 138 Milky Way (MW) analogues from the TNG50 cosmological simulation based on their z = 0 properties: discy morphology, stellar mass, and local environment. In order to make more predictive statements for the MW, we further limit the spatial volume coverage of stellar populations in galaxies to that targeted by the upcoming 4MOST high-resolution survey of the Galactic disc and bulge. We find that across all galaxies, ∼20 per cent of VMP ([Fe/H] < −2) stars belong to the disc, with some analogues reaching 30 per cent. About 50 ± 10 per cent of the VMP disc stars are, on average, older than 12.5 Gyr and ∼70 ± 10 per cent come from accreted satellites. A large fraction of the VMP stars belong to the halo (∼70) and have a median age of 12 Gyr. Our results with the TNG50 cosmological simulation confirm earlier findings with simulations of fewer individual galaxies, and suggest that the stellar disc of the MW is very likely to host significant amounts of very- and extremely-metal-poor stars that, although mostly of ex situ origin, can also form in situ, reinforcing the idea of the existence of a primordial Galactic disc.

Deep Synoptic Array Science: A Massive Elliptical Host Among Two Galaxy-cluster Fast Radio Bursts

The stellar population environments that are associated with fast radio burst (FRB) sources provide important insights for developing their progenitor theories. We expand the diversity of known FRB host environments by reporting two FRBs in massive galaxy clusters that were discovered by the Deep Synoptic Array (DSA-110) during its commissioning observations. FRB 20220914A has been localized to a star-forming, late-type galaxy at a redshift of 0.1139 with multiple starbursts at lookback times less than ∼3.5 Gyr in the A2310 galaxy cluster. Although the host galaxy of FRB 20220914A is similar to typical FRB hosts, the FRB 20220509G host stands out as a quiescent, early-type galaxy at a redshift of 0.0894 in the A2311 galaxy cluster. The discovery of FRBs in both late- and early-type galaxies adds to the body of evidence that the FRB sources have multiple formation channels. Therefore, even though FRB hosts are typically star-forming, there must exist formation channels that are consistent with old stellar population in galaxies. The varied star formation histories of the two FRB hosts that we report here indicate a wide delay-time distribution of FRB progenitors. Future work in constraining the FRB delay-time distribution, using the methods that we develop herein, will prove crucial in determining the evolutionary histories of FRB sources.

CEERS Key Paper. V. Galaxies at 4 < z < 9 Are Bluer than They Appear–Characterizing Galaxy Stellar Populations from Rest-frame ∼1 μm Imaging

We present results from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Survey on the stellar population parameters for 28 galaxies with redshifts 4 < z < 9 using imaging data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) combined with data from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope. The JWST/MIRI 5.6 and 7.7 μm data extend the coverage of the rest-frame spectral energy distribution to nearly 1 μm for galaxies in this redshift range. By modeling the galaxies’ SEDs the MIRI data show that the galaxies have, on average, rest-frame UV (1600 Å)—I-band colors 0.4 mag bluer than derived when using photometry that lacks MIRI. Therefore, the galaxies have lower ratios of stellar mass to light. The MIRI data reduce the stellar masses by dex at 4 < z < 6 and 0.37 dex at 6 < z < 9. This also reduces the star formation rates (SFRs) by 〈ΔlogSFR〉 = 0.14 dex at 4 < z < 6 and 0.27 dex at 6 < z < 9. The MIRI data also improve constraints on the allowable stellar mass formed in early star formation. We model this using a star formation history that includes both a “burst” at z f = 100 and a slowly varying (“delayed-τ”) model. The MIRI data reduce the allowable stellar mass by 0.6 dex at 4 < z < 6 and by ≈1 dex at 6 < z < 9. Applying these results globally, this reduces the cosmic stellar-mass density by an order of magnitude in the early Universe (z ≈ 9). Therefore, observations of rest-frame ≳1 μm are paramount for constraining the stellar-mass buildup in galaxies at very high redshifts.

IMaNGA: mock MaNGA galaxies based on IllustrisTNG and MaStar SSPs – II. The catalogue

ABSTRACT Strengthening the synergy between simulations and observations is essential to test galaxy formation and evolution theories. To achieve this goal, in the first paper of this series, we presented a method to generate mock SDSS-IV/Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) integral-field spectroscopic galaxy observations from cosmological simulations. In this second paper, we build the iMaNGA catalogue consisting of ∼1000 unique galaxies from the TNG50 cosmological simulations, selected to mimic the SDSS-IV/MaNGA-Primary sample selection. Here, we present and discuss the iMaNGA sample and its comparison to the MaNGA Primary catalogue. The iMaNGA sample well recovers the MaNGA-Primary sample in terms of stellar mass versus angular size relation and spatial resolution. The Sérsic index versus angular size relation, instead, is not reproduced well by the simulations, mostly because of a paucity of high-mass elliptical galaxies in TNG50. We also investigate our ability to recover the galaxy kinematics and stellar population properties with full-spectral fitting. We demonstrate that ‘intrinsic’ and ‘recovered’ stellar kinematics, stellar ages, and metallicities are consistent, with residuals compatible with zero within 1σ. Also ‘intrinsic’ and ‘recovered’ star formation histories display a great resemblance. We conclude that our mock generation and spectral fitting processes do not distort the ‘intrinsic’ galaxy properties. Therefore, in the third paper of this series, we can meaningfully test the cosmological simulations, comparing the stellar population properties and kinematics of the iMaNGA mock galaxies and the MaNGA observational results.

On the impact of spectral template uncertainties in synthetic stellar populations

ABSTRACTUncertainties in stellar population models, both in terms of stellar evolution and stellar spectra, translate into uncertainties in our interpretation of stellar populations in galaxies, since stars are the source of most of the light we receive from them. Observations by JWST are revealing high-redshift galaxies in great detail, which must then be compared to models. One significant source of uncertainty is in the stellar spectra used to generate composite spectra of stellar populations, which are then compared to data. Confidence in theoretical models is important to enable reliable determination of the properties of these galaxies such as their ages and star formation history. Here, we present a comparison of spectral synthesis carried out with six different stellar spectral libraries using the Binary Population and Spectral Synthesis framework. In photometric colours, the differences between theoretical libraries are relatively small (&amp;lt;0.10 mag), similar to typical observational uncertainties on individual galaxy observations. Differences become more pronounced when detailed spectroscopic properties are examined. Predictions for spectral line indices can vary significantly, with equivalent widths differing by a factor of 2 in some cases. With these index strengths, some of the libraries yield predictions of ages and metallicities which are unphysical. Many spectral libraries lack wavelength coverage in the ultraviolet, which is of growing importance in the era of JWST observations of distant galaxies, whose flux is dominated by hot, young stars.

GASP. XLV. Stellar Bars in Jellyfish Galaxies: Analysis of Ionized Gas and Stellar Populations

Stellar bars have been found to substantially influence the properties of stellar populations in galaxies, affecting their ability to form stars. While this can be easily seen when studying galaxies in relatively isolated environments, such type of analysis requires a higher degree of complexity when cluster galaxies are considered, due to the variety of interactions that can potentially occur in these denser environments. We use IFU MUSE data from the GASP survey to study the combined effect of the presence of a stellar bar and ram pressure, on spatially resolved properties of stellar populations. We have analyzed spatially resolved indicators of both recent star formation rates (SFRs) and average stellar population ages to check for signatures of anomalous central star formation activity, also taking into account the possible presence of nuclear activity. We found an increase in central SFR in ram-pressure-affected galaxies when compared with unperturbed ones. The most extreme cases of increased SFR and central rejuvenation occur in barred galaxies that are at advanced stages of ram pressure stripping. For low-mass barred galaxies affected by ram pressure, the combined effect is the systematic enhancement of the star formation activity as opposed to the case of high-mass galaxies, which present both enhancement and suppression. Barred galaxies that present suppression of their star formation activity also present signatures of nuclear activity. Our results indicate that the combined effect of the presence of a bar and strong perturbation by ram pressure is able to trigger the central star formation activity and probably ignite nuclear activity.

The Kormendy relation of early-type galaxies as a function of wavelength in Abell S1063, MACS J0416.1-2403, and MACS J1149.5+2223

Context. The wavelength dependence of the projection of the fundamental plane along the velocity dispersion axis, namely the Kormendy relation, is well characterised at low redshift but poorly studied at intermediate redshifts. The Kormendy relation provides information on the evolution of the population of early-type galaxies (ETGs). Therefore, by studying it, we may shed light on the assembly processes of these objects and their size evolution. As studies at different redshifts are generally conducted in different rest-frame wavebands, it is important to investigate whether the Kormendy relation is dependent on wavelength. Knowledge of such a dependence is fundamental to correctly interpreting the conclusions we might draw from these studies. Aims. We analyse the Kormendy relations of the three Hubble Frontier Fields clusters, Abell S1063 at z = 0.348, MACS J0416.1-2403 at z = 0.396, and MACS J1149.5+2223 at z = 0.542, as a function of wavelength. This is the first time the Kormendy relation of ETGs has been explored consistently over such a large range of wavelengths at intermediate redshifts. Methods. We exploit very deep Hubble Space Telescope photometry, ranging from the observed B-band to the H-band, and VLT/MUSE integral field spectroscopy. We improve the structural parameter estimation we performed in a previous work by means of a newly developed PYTHON package called MORPHOFIT. Results. With its use on cluster ETGs, we find that the Kormendy relation slopes increase smoothly with wavelength from the optical to the near-infrared (NIR) bands in all three clusters, with the intercepts becoming fainter at lower redshifts due to the passive ageing of the ETG stellar populations. The slope trend is consistent with previous findings at lower redshifts. Conclusions. The slope increase with wavelength implies that smaller ETGs are more centrally concentrated than larger ETGs in the NIR with respect to the optical regime. As different bands probe different stellar populations in galaxies, the slope increase also implies that smaller ETGs have stronger internal gradients with respect to larger ETGs.

Non-LTE radiative transfer with Turbospectrum

Physically realistic models of stellar spectra are needed in a variety of astronomical studies, from the analysis of fundamental stellar parameters, to studies of exoplanets and stellar populations in galaxies. Here we present a new version of the widely used radiative transfer code Turbospectrum, which we update so that it is able to perform spectrum synthesis for lines of multiple chemical elements in non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE). We use the code in the analysis of metallicites and abundances of the Gaia FGK benchmark stars, using 1D MARCS atmospheric models and the averages of 3D radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of stellar surface convection. We show that the new more physically realistic models offer a better description of the observed data, and we make the program and the associated microphysics data publicly available, including grids of NLTE departure coefficients for H, O, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Sr, and Ba.

The dark side of galaxy stellar populations – II. The dependence of star-formation histories on halo mass and on the scatter of the main sequence

ABSTRACT Nearby galaxies are the end result of their cosmological evolution, which is predicted to be influenced by the growth of their host dark matter haloes. This co-evolution potentially leaves signatures in present-day observed galaxy properties, which might be essential to further understand how the growth and properties of galaxies are connected to those of their host haloes. In this work, we study the evolutionary histories of nearby galaxies both in terms of their host haloes and the scatter of the star-forming main sequence by investigating their time-resolved stellar populations using absorption optical spectra drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find that galaxy star-formation histories depend on the masses of their host haloes, and hence they shape the evolution of the star-forming main sequence over cosmic time. Additionally, we also find that the scatter around the z = 0 star-forming main sequence is not (entirely) stochastic, as galaxies with currently different star-formation rates have experienced, on average, different star-formation histories. Our findings suggest that dark matter haloes might play a key role in modulating the evolution of star formation in galaxies, and thus of the main sequence, and further demonstrate that galaxies at different evolutionary stages contribute to the observed scatter of this relation.

Improved Measurements of Galaxy Star Formation Stochasticity from the Intrinsic Scatter of Burst Indicators

Measurements of short-timescale star formation variations (i.e., “burstiness” or star formation stochasticity) are integral to our understanding of star formation feedback mechanisms and the assembly of stellar populations in galaxies. We expand upon the work of Broussard et al. by introducing a new analysis of galaxy star formation burstiness that accounts for variations in the distribution, a major confounding factor. We use Balmer decrements from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey to measure Q sg , which we use to construct mock catalogs from the Santa Cruz Semi-Analytic Models and Mufasa cosmological hydrodynamical simulation based on 3D-HST, Fiber Multi-Object Spectrograph (FMOS)-COSMOS, and MOSDEF galaxies with Hα detections. The results of the mock catalogs are compared against observations using the burst indicator , with the standard deviation of the η distribution indicating burstiness. We find decent agreement between mock and observed η distribution shapes; however, the FMOS-COSMOS and MOSDEF mocks show a systematically low median and scatter in η in comparison to the observations. This work also presents the novel approach of analytically deriving the relationship between the intrinsic scatter in η, scatter added by measurement uncertainties, and observed scatter, resulting in an intrinsic burstiness measurement of 0.06–0.16 dex.

Spectroscopic study of five SB1 stars with CP components

ABSTRACT In this paper, we present the results of a spectroscopic campaign devoted to ascertaining the actual nature of a sample of five objects reported as chemically peculiar stars in the Catalogue of Ap, HgMn and Am stars (2009, A&amp;A, 498, 961). Spectroscopic observations were obtained with Catania Astrophysical Observatory Spectropolarimeter. For each of the objects, we derive the effective temperature, gravity, rotational and radial velocities, and chemical abundances using the spectral synthesis method. All the targets were found to be SB1 systems. Our abundance analysis led us to classify HD 40788 and HD 187959 as marginal Am stars and HD 202431 as an Am star, and to confirm HD 134793 as an SrEuCr Ap star and, finally, HD 189652 as a normal star. Finally, we confirm that Am stars can possibly be used as an accurate tool to date stellar populations in galaxies.

Dust Emission as a Function of Stellar Population Age in the Nearby Galaxy M33

Dust emission at 8 μm has been extensively calibrated as an indicator of current star formation rate for galaxies and ∼kpc-size regions within galaxies. Yet, the exact link between the 8 μm emission and the young stellar populations in galaxies is still under question, as dust grains can be stochastically heated also by older field stars. In order to investigate this link, we have combined midinfrared images from the Spitzer Space Telescope with a published star cluster candidates catalog for the Local Group galaxy M33. M33 is sufficiently close that the Spitzer's 8 μm images resolve individual regions of star formation. Star clusters represent almost-single-age stellar populations, which are significantly easier to model than more complex mixtures of stars. We find a decrease in the 8 μm luminosity per unit stellar mass as a function of age of the star clusters, with a large scatter that is consistent with varying fractions of stellar light absorbed by dust. The decrease and scatter both confirm findings based on more distant galaxies and are well described by simple models for the dust emission of a young stellar population. We conclude that the dust emission at 8 μm depends sensitively on the age of the stellar population, out to at least the oldest age analyzed here: ∼400 Myr. This dependence complicates the use of the 8 μm emission as a star formation rate indicator, at least for small galactic regions and individual star-forming regions. By leveraging the Spitzer legacy, this investigation paves the way for future explorations with the James Webb Space Telescope.

On the Stellar Populations of Galaxies at z = 9–11: The Growth of Metals and Stellar Mass at Early Times

Abstract We present a detailed stellar population analysis of 11 bright (H &lt; 26.6) galaxies at z = 9–11 (three spectroscopically confirmed) to constrain the chemical enrichment and growth of stellar mass of early galaxies. We use the flexible Bayesian spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting code Prospector with a range of star formation histories (SFHs), a flexible dust attenuation law, and a self-consistent model of emission lines. This approach allows us to assess how different priors affect our results and how well we can break degeneracies between dust attenuation, stellar ages, metallicity, and emission lines using data that probe only the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) to optical wavelengths. We measure a median observed UV spectral slope β = − 1.87 − 0.43 + 0.35 for relatively massive star-forming galaxies ( 9 &lt; log ( M ⋆ / M ⊙ ) &lt; 10 ), consistent with no change from z = 4 to z = 9–10 at these stellar masses, implying rapid enrichment. Our SED-fitting results are consistent with a star-forming main sequence with sublinear slope (0.7 ± 0.2) and specific star formation rates of 3–10 Gyr−1. However, the stellar ages and SFHs are less well constrained. Using different SFH priors, we cannot distinguish between median mass-weighted ages of ∼ 50–150 Myr, which corresponds to 50% formation redshifts of z 50 ∼ 10–12 at z ∼ 9 and is of the order of the dynamical timescales of these systems. Importantly, models with different SFH priors are able to fit the data equally well. We conclude that the current observational data cannot tightly constrain the mass-buildup timescales of these z = 9–11 galaxies, with our results consistent with SFHs implying both a shallow and steep increase in the cosmic SFR density with time at z &gt; 10.

The dark side of galaxy stellar populations – I. The stellar-to-halo mass relation and the velocity dispersion–halo mass relation

ABSTRACT The growth and properties of galaxies are thought to be closely connected to the ones of their host dark matter haloes. Despite the importance of this so-called galaxy–halo connection, the potential role of dark matter haloes in regulating observed galaxy properties remains yet to be fully understood. In this work, we derive the ages, metallicites, and [Mg/Fe] abundances from optical spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey of nearby central galaxies, and study them in terms of their host haloes. We investigate how the scatter in the stellar-to-halo mass relation and the velocity dispersion–halo mass relation correlates with these stellar population parameters. In addition, we also study the differences when distinguishing between different galaxy morphologies and environments. We find that the ages and chemical enrichment of galaxies are not fully determined by their stellar masses or velocity dispersion, but also depend on the mass of the host haloes. Our findings suggest that the velocity dispersion is the best proxy of the stellar population parameters with halo mass playing a secondary yet noticeable role. We interpret that the origin of the correlation between the scatter of these relations and the ages and metallicities might be related to different halo formation times.

The LEGA-C of Nature and Nurture in Stellar Populations at z ∼ 0.6–1.0: D n 4000 and Hδ Reveal Different Assembly Histories for Quiescent Galaxies in Different Environments

Abstract Galaxy evolution is driven by a variety of physical processes that are predicted to proceed at different rates for different dark matter haloes and environments across cosmic times. A record of this evolution is preserved in galaxy stellar populations, which we can access using absorption-line spectroscopy. Here we explore the large LEGA-C survey (DR3) to investigate the role of the environment and stellar mass on stellar populations at z ∼ 0.6–1 in the COSMOS field. Leveraging the statistical power and depth of LEGA-C, we reveal significant gradients in D n 4000 and Hδ equivalent widths (EWs) distributions over the stellar mass versus environment 2D spaces for the massive galaxy population (M &gt; 1010 M ⊙) at z ∼ 0.6–1.0. D n 4000 and Hδ EWs primarily depend on stellar mass, but they also depend on environment at fixed stellar mass. By splitting the sample into centrals and satellites, and in terms of star-forming galaxies and quiescent galaxies, we reveal that the significant environmental trends of D n 4000 and Hδ EW, when controlling for stellar mass, are driven by quiescent galaxies. Regardless of being centrals or satellites, star-forming galaxies reveal D n 4000 and Hδ EWs, which depend strongly on their stellar mass and are completely independent of the environment at 0.6 &lt; z &lt; 1.0. The environmental trends seen for satellite galaxies are fully driven by the trends that hold only for quiescent galaxies, combined with the strong environmental dependency of the quiescent fraction at fixed stellar mass. Our results are consistent with recent predictions from simulations that point toward massive galaxies forming first in overdensities or the most compact dark matter haloes.
