Constraining the LyC escape fraction from LEGUS star clusters with SIGNALS H ii region observations: a pilot study of NGC 628

ABSTRACT The ionizing radiation of young and massive stars is a crucial form of stellar feedback. Most ionizing (Lyman-continuum; LyC, λ < 912Å) photons are absorbed close to the stars that produce them, forming compact H ii regions, but some escape into the wider galaxy. Quantifying the fraction of LyC photons that escape is an open problem. In this work, we present a seminovel method to estimate the escape fraction by combining broadband photometry of star clusters from the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) with H ii regions observed by the Star formation, Ionized gas, and Nebular Abundances Legacy Survey (SIGNALS) in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 628. We first assess the completeness of the combined catalogue, and find that 49 per cent of H ii regions lack corresponding star clusters as a result of a difference in the sensitivities of the LEGUS and SIGNALS surveys. For H ii regions that do have matching clusters, we infer the escape fraction from the difference between the ionizing power required to produce the observed H ii luminosity and the predicted ionizing photon output of their host star clusters; the latter is computed using a combination of LEGUS photometric observations and a stochastic stellar population synthesis code slug (Stochastically Lighting Up Galaxies). Overall, we find an escape fraction of ${f}_{\textrm {esc}}= 0.09^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$ across our sample of 42 H ii regions; in particular, we find H ii regions with high fesc are predominantly regions with low $\operatorname{H\alpha }$-luminosity. We also report possible correlation between fesc and the emission lines $\rm [O\, \rm {\small II}]/[N\, \rm {\small II}]$ and $\rm [O\, \rm {\small II}]/H\beta$.

Exploring the impact of IMF and binary parameter stochasticity with a binary population synthesis code

ABSTRACT Low-mass star formation regions are unlikely to fully populate their initial mass functions (IMFs), leading to a deficit of massive stars. In binary stellar populations, the full range of binary separations and mass ratios will also be underpopulated. To explore the effects of stochastic sampling in the integrated light of stellar clusters, we calculate models at a broad range of cluster masses, from 102 to 107 M⊙, using a binary stellar population synthesis code. For clusters with stellar masses less than 105 M⊙, observable quantities show substantial scatter and their mean properties reflect the expected deficit of massive stars. In common with previous work, we find that purely stochastic sampling of the IMF appears to underestimate the mass of the most massive star in known clusters. However, even with this constraint, the majority of clusters likely inject sufficient kinetic energy to clear their birth clusters of gas. For quantities that directly measure the impact of the most massive stars, such as Nion, ξion, and βUV, uncertainties due to stochastic sampling dominate over those from the IMF shape or distribution of binary parameters, while stochastic sampling has a negligible effect on the stellar continuum luminosity density.

Population study of astrophysical false positive detections in the southern plato field

ABSTRACT For the upcoming PLAnetary Transits and Oscillation of stars (PLATO) satellite mission, a large number of target stars are required to yield a statistically significant number of planet transits. Locating the centres of the long duration observational phase (LOP) fields closer to the Galactic plane will increase the target star numbers but also the astrophysical false positives (FPs) from blended eclipsing binary systems. We utilize the Binary Stellar Evolution and Population Synthesis code, to create a complete synthetic stellar and planetary population for the proposed southern LOP field (LOPS0), as well as for a representative portion of the northern LOP field (LOPN-sub). For LOPS0, we find an overall low FP rate for planets smaller than Neptunes. The FP rate generally shows little variation with Galactic longitude (l), and a modest increase with decreasing Galactic latitude (|b|). The location of the LOPS field centre within the current allowed region is not strongly constrained by FPs. Analysis of LOPN-sub suggests a markedly increased number of FPs across the full range of planet radii at low |b| resulting in approximately twice the percentage of FP detection rate in the LOPN-sub compared to the corresponding southern field segment in the planet radius range −0.2 < log (R/R⊕) ≤ 0.4. However, only a few per cent of fully eclipsing FPs in LOPS0 in this radius range have periods between 180 and 1000 d so the vast majority of FPs are expected to be outside the period range of interest for PLATO.

Revisiting stellar properties of star-forming galaxies with stellar and nebular spectral modelling

Context. Spectral synthesis is a powerful tool for interpreting the physical properties of galaxies by decomposing their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) into the main luminosity contributors (e.g. stellar populations of distinct age and metallicity or ionised gas). However, the impact nebular emission has on the inferred properties of star-forming (SF) galaxies has been largely overlooked over the years, with unknown ramifications to the current understanding of galaxy evolution. Aims. The objective of this work is to estimate the relations between stellar properties (e.g. total mass, mean age, and mean metallicity) of SF galaxies by simultaneously fitting the stellar and nebular continua and comparing them to the results derived through the more common purely stellar spectral synthesis approach. Methods. The main galaxy sample from SDSS DR7 was analysed with two distinct population synthesis codes: FADO, which estimates self-consistently both the stellar and nebular contributions to the SED, and the original version of STARLIGHT, as representative of purely stellar population synthesis codes. Results. Differences between codes regarding average mass, mean age and mean metallicity values can go as high as ∼0.06 dex for the overall population of galaxies and ∼0.12 dex for SF galaxies (galaxies with EW(Hα) > 3 Å), with the most prominent difference between both codes in the two populations being in the light-weighted mean stellar age. FADO presents a broader range of mean stellar ages and metallicities for SF galaxies than STARLIGHT, with the latter code preferring metallicity solutions around the solar value (Z⊙ = 0.02). A closer look into the average light- and mass-weighted star formation histories of intensively SF galaxies (EW(Hα) > 75 Å) reveals that the light contributions of simple stellar populations (SSPs) younger than ≤107 (109) years in STARLIGHT are higher by ∼5.41% (9.11%) compared to FADO. Moreover, FADO presents higher light contributions from SSPs with metallicity ≤Z⊙/200 (Z⊙/50) of around 8.05% (13.51%) when compared with STARLIGHT. This suggests that STARLIGHT is underestimating the average light-weighted age of intensively SF galaxies by up to ∼0.17 dex and overestimating the light-weighted metallicity by up to ∼0.13 dex compared to FADO (or vice versa). The comparison between the average stellar properties of passive, SF and intensively SF galaxy samples also reveals that differences between codes increase with increasing EW(Hα) and decreasing total stellar mass. Moreover, comparing SF results from FADO in a purely stellar mode with the previous results qualitatively suggests that differences between codes are primarily due to mathematical and statistical differences and secondarily due to the impact of the nebular continuum modelling approach (or lack thereof). However, it is challenging to adequately quantify the relative role of each factor since they are likely interconnected. Conclusions. This work finds indirect evidence that a purely stellar population synthesis approach negatively impacts the inferred stellar properties (e.g. mean age and mean metallicity) of galaxies with relatively high star formation rates (e.g. dwarf spirals, ‘green peas’, and starburst galaxies). In turn, this can bias interpretations of fundamental relations such as the mass-age or mass-metallicity, which are factors worth bearing in mind in light of future high-resolution spectroscopic surveys at higher redshifts (e.g. MOONS and 4MOST-4HS).

Ram pressure stripping in the z ∼ 0.5 galaxy cluster MS 0451.6-0305

Context. The pressure exerted by the ambient hot X-ray gas on cluster galaxies can lead to the presence of ram pressure stripped (RPS) galaxies, characterized by asymmetric shapes, and, in some cases, tails of blue stars and/or X-ray gas, with increased star formation. Aims. With the aim of increasing the known sample of RPS galaxies at redshift z ∼ 0.5, notably higher than most RPS samples presently known, we extended our searches for such galaxies to the cluster MS 0451.6-0305. Methods. Our study is based on Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging in the F814W band (corresponding to a restframe wavelength of 529 nm), covering a region of about 6 × 6 Mpc2, an eight magnitude ground-based catalogue with photometric redshifts, and a spectroscopic redshift catalogue. We defined as cluster members a spectroscopic redshift sample of 359 galaxies within ±4σv of the mean cluster velocity, and a photometric redshift sample covering the [0.48, 0.61] range. We searched for RPS galaxies in the HST images and tested the error on their classification with a Zooniverse collaboration. We also computed the phase space diagram of RPS candidates in the spectroscopic sample. Finally, we ran the LePhare stellar population synthesis code through the GAZPAR interface to analyze and compare the properties of RPS and non-RPS galaxies. Results. We find 56 and 273 RPS candidates in the spectroscopic and photometric redshift samples, respectively. They are distributed throughout the cluster and tend to avoid high density regions. The phase space diagram gives the percentages of virialized, backsplash, and infall galaxies. RPS galaxy candidates typically show rather high star formation rates, young ages, and relatively low masses. We compare all our results to those previously obtained for the massive merging cluster MACS J0717+3745, at a similar redshift. Conclusions. This study increases by at least 56 objects if we only consider galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts, and probably much more if galaxies with photometric redshifts are taken into account. This study increases the number of RPS candidates at redshift z > 0.5, and confirms that they host, on average, younger stellar populations and strongly form stars when compared with non-RPS counterparts. The fact that RPS candidates with spectroscopic and with photometric redshifts have comparable properties shows that large samples of such objects could be gathered based on multi-band photometry only, a promising result in view of the very large imaging surveys planned in the coming years (DES, Euclid, LSST, etc.).

Stellar populations of a sample of far-infrared AGN and non-AGN green valley galaxies

ABSTRACT We present a study on the stellar populations and stellar ages of a subsample of far-infrared (FIR) active galactic nucleus (AGN) and non-AGN green valley galaxies at ${0.6\, \lt \, z\, \lt \, 1.0}$ using the data from the Cosmological Evolution Survey field. We used long-slit spectroscopy and derived stellar populations and stellar ages using the stellar population synthesis code ‘starlight’ and analysed the available Lick/IDS indices, such as Dn4000 and HδA. We find that both FIR AGN and non-AGN green valley galaxies are dominated by intermediate stellar populations (67 per cent and 53 per cent, respectively). The median stellar ages for AGNs and non-AGNs are ${\log t\, =\, 8.5}$ and ${\, 8.4\, \rm yr}$, respectively. We found that majority of our sources (62 per cent of AGNs and 66 per cent of non-AGNs) could have experienced bursts and continuous star formation (SF). In addition, most of our FIR AGNs (38 per cent) compared to FIR non-AGNs (27 per cent) might have experienced a burst of SF more than 0.1 Gyr ago. We also found that our FIR AGN and non-AGN green valley galaxies have similar quenching time-scales of ∼ 70 Myr. Therefore, the results obtained here are in line with our previous results where we do not find that our sample of FIR AGNs in the green valley shows signs of negative AGN feedback, as has been suggested previously in optical studies.

A Systematic Analysis of Stellar Populations in the Host Galaxies of Changing-look AGNs

Abstract “Changing-look” active galactic nuclei (CL-AGNs) are a newly discovered class of AGNs that show the appearance (or disappearance) of broad emission lines within short timescales (months to years), and are often associated with dramatic changes in their continuum emissions. They provide us with an unprecedented chance to directly investigate the host galaxy properties with minimal contamination from the luminous central engine during the turn-off state, which is difficult for normal luminous AGNs. In this work, for the first time, we systematically characterize the stellar populations and star formation histories of host galaxies for 26 turn-off CL-AGNs using the stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT. We find that the stellar populations of CL-AGNs are similar to those of normal AGNs, except that the intermediate stellar populations contribute more fractions. We estimate their stellar velocity dispersions (σ ⋆) and black hole masses (M BH,vir), and find that CL-AGNs also follow the overall M BH–σ ⋆ relationship. We also confirm the previous claims that CL-AGNs tend to be biased toward lower Eddington ratios, and that their extreme variabilities are more likely due to the intrinsic changes of the accretion rates. In addition, CL-AGNs with recent star formations tend to have higher Eddington ratios. Compared with previous studies, our analysis suggests that there may be a correlation between CL-AGN host galaxy properties and their CL phenomena.

Radial stellar populations of AGN-host dwarf galaxies in SDSS-IV MaNGA survey

Based on MaNGA integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy we search 60 AGN candidates, which have stellar masses M * ⩽ 5 × 109 M ⊙ and show AGN ionization signatures in the BPT diagram. For these AGN candidates, we derive the spatially resolved stellar population with the stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT and measure the gradients of the mean stellar age and metallicity. We find that the gradients of mean stellar age (metallicity) of individual AGN-host dwarfs are diverse in 0–0.5 Re, 0.5–1 Re and 0–1 Re. However, the overall behavior of the mean stellar age (metallicity) profiles tend to be flat, as the median values of the gradients are close to zero. We further study the overall behavior of the mean stellar age (metallicity) by plotting the co-added radial profiles for the AGN sample and compare with a control sample with similar stellar mass. We find that the median values of light-weighted mean stellar ages of the AGN sample are as old as 2–3 Gyr within 2 Re,which are about 4–7 times older than those of the control sample. Meanwhile, most of the AGN candidates are low-level AGNs, as only eight sources have L [O iii] > 1039.5 erg s−1. Hence, the AGNs in dwarf galaxies might accelerate the evolution of galaxies by accelerating the consumption of the gas, resulting in an overall quenching of the dwarf galaxies, and the AGNs also become weak due to the lack of gas. The median values of mass-weighted mean stellar age of both samples within 2 Re are similar and as old as about 10 Gyr, indicating that the stellar mass is mainly contributed by old stellar populations. The gradients of co-added mean stellar metallicity for both samples tend to be negative but close to zero, and the similar mean stellar metallicity profiles for both samples indicate that the chemical evolution of the host galaxy is not strongly influenced by the AGN.

Surface brightness fluctuations to constrain secondary stellar populations: revealing very low-metallicity stars in massive galaxies

ABSTRACT The aim of this work is to explore the potential of surface brightness fluctuations (SBF) for studying composite stellar populations (CSP). To do so, we have computed the standard (mean) and SBF spectra with E-MILES stellar population synthesis code. We have created a set of models composed by different mass fractions of two single stellar populations, as a first approximation of a CSP scenario. With these models we present an ensemble of SBF colour–colour diagnostic diagrams that reveal different secondary populations depending on the bands used. For this work we focus on those colours capable of unveiling small fractions of metal-poor components in elliptical galaxies, which are dominated by old metal-rich stellar populations. We fit a set of synthetic models and a selection of nearby elliptical galaxies to our CSP models using both mean and SBF colours. We find that the results are highly improved and return small secondary components when mean and SBF values are applied simultaneously, instead of employing them separately or as a constraint. Finally, we explore the possibility of tracking chemical enrichment histories by including in the analysis a variety of SBF colours. For this purpose we present an example where, with two different SBF colour–colour diagrams, we untangle a small contribution of a young solar population and an old metal-poor component from an old solar principal population. The results we have found are promising, but limited by the available data. We highlight the urgent need for new, better, and more consistent SBF observations.

The effect of emission lines on the performance of photometric redshift estimation algorithms

ABSTRACT We investigate the effect of strong emission line galaxies on the performance of empirical photometric redshift estimation methods. In order to artificially control the contribution of photometric error and emission lines to total flux, we develop a PCA-based stochastic mock catalogue generation technique that allows for generating infinite signal-to-noise ratio model spectra with realistic emission lines on top of theoretical stellar continua. Instead of running the computationally expensive stellar population synthesis and nebular emission codes, our algorithm generates realistic spectra with a statistical approach, and – as an alternative to attempting to constrain the priors on input model parameters – works by matching output observational parameters. Hence, it can be used to match the luminosity, colour, emission line and photometric error distribution of any photometric sample with sufficient flux-calibrated spectroscopic follow-up. We test three simple empirical photometric estimation methods and compare the results with and without photometric noise and strong emission lines. While photometric noise clearly dominates the uncertainty of photometric redshift estimates, the key findings are that emission lines play a significant role in resolving colour space degeneracies and good spectroscopic coverage of the entire colour space is necessary to achieve good results with empirical photo-z methods. Template-fitting methods, on the other hand, must use a template set with sufficient variation in emission line strengths and ratios, or even better, first estimate the redshift empirically and fit the colours with templates at the best-fit redshift to calculate the K-correction and various physical parameters.

The physical properties and evolution of the interacting system AM 1204−292

ABSTRACT We investigate interaction effects in the stellar and gas kinematics, stellar population, and ionized gas properties of the interacting galaxy pair AM 1204−292,composed of NGC 4105 and NGC 4106. The data consist of long-slit spectra in the range 3000–7050 Å. The massive E3 galaxy NGC 4105 presents a flat stellar velocity profile, while the ionized gas is in strong rotation, suggesting an external origin. Its companion, NGC 4106, shows asymmetries in the radial velocity field, likely due to the interaction. The dynamics of the interacting pair were modelled using the P-Gadget3 treepm/sph code, from which we show that the system has just passed the first perigalacticum, which triggered an outbreak of star formation, currently at full maximum. We characterized the stellar population properties using the stellar population synthesis code starlight and, on average, both galaxies are predominantly composed of old stellar populations. NGC 4105 has a slightly negative age gradient, comparable with that of the most massive elliptical galaxies, but a steeper metallicity gradient. The SB0 galaxy NGC 4106 presents smaller radial variations in both age and metallicity in comparison with intermediate-mass early-type galaxies. These gradients have not been disturbed by interaction, since the star formation happened very recently and was not extensive in mass. Electron density estimates for the pair are systematically higher than those obtained in isolated galaxies. The central O/H abundances were obtained from photoionization models in combination with emission-line ratios, which resulted in 12 + log(O/H) = 9.03 ± 0.02 and 12 + log(O/H) = 8.69 ± 0.05 for NGC 4105 and NGC 4106, respectively.

Sengi: A small, fast, interactive viewer for spectral outputs from stellar population synthesis models

We present Sengi, https://christopherlovell.github.io/sengi , an online tool for viewing the spectral outputs of stellar population synthesis (SPS) codes. Typical SPS codes require significant disk space or computing resources to produce spectra for simple stellar populations with arbitrary parameters. This makes it difficult to present their results in an interactive, web-friendly format. Sengi uses Non-negative Matrix Factorisation (NMF) and bilinear interpolation to estimate output spectra for arbitrary values of stellar age and metallicity. The reduced disk requirements and computational expense allows the result to be served as a client-based Javascript application. In this paper we present the method for generating grids of spectra, fitting those grids with NMF, bilinear interpolation across the fitted coefficients, and finally provide estimates of the prediction and interpolation errors.

Stellar Populations of a Sample of Optically Selected AGN-host Dwarf Galaxies

Abstract In this paper we present our studies on the stellar populations and star formation histories (SFHs) for the Reines et al. sample of 136 dwarf galaxies that host active galactic nuclei (AGNs), selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 8. We derive stellar populations and reconstruct SFHs for these AGN-host dwarfs using the stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT. Our results suggest that these AGN-host dwarfs have assembled their stellar masses within a narrow period of time with the stellar mass-weighted ages in the range of 109–1010 yr, but show a wide diversity of SFHs with the luminosity-weighted stellar ages in the range of 107–1010 yr. The old population (t > 109 yr) contributes most to the galaxy light for the majority of the sample; the young population (t < 108 yr) also appears in significant but widely varying fractions, while the intermediate-age population (108 < t < 109 yr) in general contributes less to the optical continuum at 4020 Å. We also find that these dwarfs follow a similar mass–metallicity relation to normal star-forming galaxies, indicating that AGNs have little effect on the chemical evolution of the host galaxy. We further investigate the relation between the derived SFHs and morphology of the host galaxy, and find no correlation. Comparing the SFHs with the luminosity of the [O iii] λ5007 line ( ), we find a mild correlation exists when erg s−1, indicating a physical connection between star formation and AGN activities in these dwarf galaxies.

Stellar populations and physical properties of starbursts in the antennae galaxy from self-consistent modelling of MUSE spectra

ABSTRACT We have modelled the stellar and nebular continua and emission-line intensity ratios of massive stellar populations in the Antennae galaxy using high resolution and self-consistent libraries of model H ii regions around central clusters of ageing stars. The model libraries are constructed using the stellar population synthesis code, starburst99, and photoionization model, and cloudy. The Geneva and PARSEC stellar evolutionary models are plugged into starburst99 to allow comparison between the two models. Using a spectrum-fitting methodology that allows the spectral features in the stellar and nebular continua [e.g. Wolf–Rayet (WR) features, Paschen jump], and emission-line diagnostics to constrain the models, we apply the libraries to the high-resolution Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer spectra of the starbursting regions in the Antennae galaxy. Through this approach, we were able to model the continuum emission from WR stars and extract stellar and gas metallicities, ages, electron temperatures, and densities of starbursts by exploiting the full spectrum. From the application to the Antennae galaxy, we find that (1) the starbursts in the Antennae galaxy are characterized by stellar and gas metallicities of around solar, (2) the star-forming gas in starbursts in the Western loop of NGC 4038 appears to be more enriched, albeit slightly, than the rest of galaxy, (3) the youngest starbursts are found across the overlap region and over parts of the western-loop, though in comparison, the regions in the western-loop appear to be at a slightly later stage in star formation than the overlap region, and (4) the results obtained from fitting the Geneva and Parsec models are largely consistent.

Predicting star formation properties of galaxies using deep learning

ABSTRACT Understanding the star formation properties of galaxies as a function of cosmic epoch is a critical exercise in studies of galaxy evolution. Traditionally, stellar population synthesis (SPS) models have been used to obtain best-fitting parameters that characterize star formation in galaxies. As multiband flux measurements become available for thousands of galaxies, an alternative approach to characterizing star formation using machine learning becomes feasible. In this work, we present the use of deep learning techniques to predict three important star formation properties – stellar mass, star formation rate, and dust luminosity. We characterize the performance of our deep learning models through comparisons with outputs from a standard SPS code.

First galaxy SED: Contribution from pre-main-sequence stars

AbstractWe calculate the spectral energy distribution of the first galaxies which contain pre-main-sequence stars by using the stellar evolution code Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics, the spectra model BT-Settl, and the stellar population synthesis code PEGASE. We calculate the galaxy spectral energy distribution for Salpeter Initial Mass Function. We find that very young first galaxies are bright also in mid-infrared, and the contribution of pre-main-sequence stars can be significant over 0.1 Myr after a star-formation episode.

Clocking the formation of today’s largest galaxies: wide field integral spectroscopy of brightest cluster galaxies and their surroundings

ABSTRACT The formation and evolution of local brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) is investigated by determining the stellar populations and dynamics from the galaxy core, through the outskirts and into the intracluster light (ICL). Integral spectroscopy of 23 BCGs observed out to $4\, r_{e}$ is collected and high signal-to-noise regions are identified. Stellar population synthesis codes are used to determine the age, metallicity, velocity, and velocity dispersion of stars within each region. The ICL spectra are best modelled with populations that are younger and less metal-rich than those of the BCG cores. The average BCG core age of the sample is $\rm 13.3\pm 2.8\, Gyr$ and the average metallicity is $\rm [Fe/H] = 0.30\pm 0.09$, whereas for the ICL the average age is $\rm 9.2\pm 3.5\, Gyr$ and the average metallicity is $\rm [Fe/H] = 0.18\pm 0.16$. The velocity dispersion profile is seen to be rising or flat in most of the sample (17/23), and those with rising values reach the value of the host cluster’s velocity dispersion in several cases. The most extended BCGs are closest to the peak of the cluster’s X-ray luminosity. The results are consistent with the idea that the BCG cores and inner regions formed quickly and long ago, with the outer regions and ICL forming more recently, and continuing to assemble through minor merging. Any recent star formation in the BCGs is a minor component, and is associated with the cluster cool core status.

Comparison of Theoretical Starburst Photoionization Models for Optical Diagnostics

We study and compare different examples of stellar evolutionary synthesis input parameters used to produce photoionization model grids using the MAPPINGS V modeling code. The aim of this study is to (a) explore the systematic effects of various stellar evolutionary synthesis model parameters on the interpretation of emission lines in optical strong-line diagnostic diagrams, (b) characterize the combination of parameters able to reproduce the spread of local galaxies located in the star-forming region in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and (c) investigate the emission from extremely metal-poor galaxies using photoionization models. We explore and compare the stellar input ionizing spectrum (stellar population synthesis code [Starburst99, SLUG, BPASS], stellar evolutionary tracks, stellar atmospheres, star formation history, sampling of the initial mass function), as well as parameters intrinsic to the H ii region (metallicity, ionization parameter, pressure, H ii region boundedness). We also perform a comparison of the photoionization codes MAPPINGS and CLOUDY. On the variations in the ionizing spectrum model parameters, we find that the differences in strong emission-line ratios between varying models for a given input model parameter are small, on average ∼0.1 dex. An average difference of ∼0.1 dex in emission-line ratio is also found between models produced with MAPPINGS and CLOUDY. Large differences between the emission-line ratios are found when comparing intrinsic H ii region parameters. We find that low-metallicity galaxies are better explained by a density-bounded H ii region and higher pressures better encompass the spread of galaxies at high redshift.

MOCCA survey database I: Preliminary mock Extra Galactic Globular Cluster observations

AbstractThe photometric properties that we could observe for Extra-Galactic Globular Clusters (EGGCs) are the integrated light of the system and for nearby EGGCs it also is possible to measure both half-light radii and the color spatial distribution, e.g. for areas smaller and larger than the half-light radius. No information about the internal dynamical state of the system could be directly obtained from observations. On the other hand, simulations of Globular Clusters (GCs) can provide detailed information about the dynamical evolution of the system.We present a preliminary study of EGGCs’ photometric properties for different dynamical evolutionary stages. We apply this study to 12Gyr old GCs simulated as part of the MOCCA Survey Database. We determine the magnitudes in different bands from their projected snapshots using the Flexible Stellar Population Synthesis (FSPS) code and we measure the half-light radii from the surface brightness.

A Systematic Analysis of Stellar Populations in the Host Galaxies of SDSS Type I QSOs

Abstract We investigate the relationship between host galaxies’ stellar content and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) for optically selected QSOs with z < 0.5. There is a total of 82 QSOs that we select from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These 82 QSOs have both Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer data and measurable stellar content. With the help of the stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT, we determine the luminosity fractions of AGNs, stellar population ages, and star formation histories (SFHs) of host galaxies. We find that there is a correlation between the SFH and AGN properties, which suggests a possible delay from star formation to AGN. This probably indicates that the AGN activity correlates with the star formation activity, which consistent with a coevolution scheme for black hole and host galaxies.
