Stellar metallicity of galaxies: new insight on the formation and evolution of low surface brightness galaxies in the IllustrisTNG simulation

ABSTRACT In this work, we investigate the stellar metallicities of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) and normal high surface brightness galaxies (HSBGs) in the IllustrisTNG100-1 simulation. LSBGs and HSBGs are classified as galaxies with mean central surface brightness $\mu _{\rm r} \gt 22.0 $ and $\mu _{\rm r} \lt 22.0\rm \ mag\ arcsec^{-2}$, respectively. Our findings indicate that both LSBGs and HSBGs exhibit similar number distributions of stellar metallicities at high redshifts (z > 1.5). However, at low redshifts (z < 1.5), a clear bimodal distribution of stellar metallicities in galaxies emerges, with LSBGs tending to be more metal-poor than HSBGs. The lower metallicity of LSBGs compared to HSBGs is mostly attributed to the pronounced gradient in the radial distribution of stellar metallicities. The bimodality of stellar metallicity is not attributed to colour distinctions but rather to the slower metal enrichment in LSBGs compared to HSBGs. This suggests that the mechanisms driving metal enrichment in LSBGs differ from those in HSBGs.

A Massive Hot Jupiter Orbiting a Metal-rich Early M Star Discovered in the TESS Full-frame Images

Observations and statistical studies have shown that giant planets are rare around M dwarfs compared with Sun-like stars. The formation mechanism of these extreme systems has remained under debate for decades. With the help of the TESS mission and ground-based follow-up observations, we report the discovery of TOI-4201b, the most massive and densest hot Jupiter around an M dwarf known so far with a radius of 1.22 ± 0.04 R J and a mass of 2.48 ± 0.09 M J, about 5 times heavier than most other giant planets around M dwarfs. It also has the highest planet-to-star mass ratio (q ∼ 4 × 10−3) among such systems. The host star is an early M dwarf with a mass of 0.61 ± 0.02 M ⊙ and a radius of 0.63 ± 0.02 R ⊙. It has significant supersolar iron abundance ([Fe/H] = 0.52 ± 0.08 dex). However, interior structure modeling suggests that its planet TOI-4201b is metal-poor, which challenges the classical core-accretion correlation of stellar−planet metallicity, unless the planet is inflated by additional energy sources. Building on the detection of this planet, we compare the stellar metallicity distribution of four planetary groups: hot/warm Jupiters around G/M dwarfs. We find that hot/warm Jupiters show a similar metallicity dependence around G-type stars. For M-dwarf host stars, the occurrence of hot Jupiters shows a much stronger correlation with iron abundance, while warm Jupiters display a weaker preference, indicating possible different formation histories.

Uncertainty-aware blob detection with an application to integrated-light stellar population recoveries

Context. Blob detection is a common problem in astronomy. One example is in stellar population modelling, where the distribution of stellar ages and metallicities in a galaxy is inferred from observations. In this context, blobs may correspond to stars born in situ versus those accreted from satellites, and the task of blob detection is to disentangle these components. A difficulty arises when the distributions come with significant uncertainties, as is the case for stellar population recoveries inferred from modelling spectra of unresolved stellar systems. There is currently no satisfactory method for blob detection with uncertainties. Aims. We introduce a method for uncertainty-aware blob detection developed in the context of stellar population modelling of integrated-light spectra of stellar systems. Methods. We developed a theory and computational tools for an uncertainty-aware version of the classic Laplacian-of-Gaussians method for blob detection, which we call ULoG. This identifies significant blobs considering a variety of scales. As a prerequisite to apply ULoG to stellar population modelling, we introduced a method for efficient computation of uncertainties for spectral modelling. This method is based on the truncated Singular Value Decomposition and Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling (SVD-MCMC). Results. We applied the methods to data of the star cluster M 54. We show that the SVD-MCMC inferences match those from standard MCMC, but they are a factor 5–10 faster to compute. We apply ULoG to the inferred M 54 age/metallicity distributions, identifying between two or three significant, distinct populations amongst its stars.

How much metal did the first stars provide to the ultra-faint dwarfs?

Numerical simulations of dwarf galaxies have so far failed to reproduce the observed metallicity-luminosity relation, down to the regime of ultra-faint dwarfs (UFDs). We address this issue by exploring how the first generations of metal-free stars (Pop III) could help increase the mean metallicity ([Fe/H]) of those small and faint galaxies. We ran zoom-in chemo-dynamical simulations of 19 halos extracted from a Λ Cold Dark Matter (CDM) cosmological box and followed their evolution down to redshift z = 0. Models were validated not only on the basis of galaxy global properties, but also on the detailed investigation of the stellar abundance ratios ([α/Fe]). We identified the necessary conditions for the formation of the first stars in mini-halos and derived constraints on the metal ejection schemes. The impact of Pop III stars on the final metallicity of UFDs was evaluated by considering different stellar mass ranges for their initial mass function (IMF), the influence of pair-instability supernovae (PISNe), and their energetic feedback, as well as the metallicity threshold that marks the transition from the first massive stars to the formation of low-mass long-lived stars. The inclusion of Pop III stars with masses below 140 M⊙, and a standard IMF slope of −1.3 does increase the global metallicity of UFDs, although these are insufficient to resolve the tension with observations. The PISNe with progenitor masses above 140 M⊙ do allow the metal content of UFDs to further increase. However, as PISNe are very rare and sometimes absent in the faintest UFDs, they have a limited impact on the global faint end of the metallicity-luminosity relation. Despite a limited number of spectroscopically confirmed members in UFDs, which make the stellar metallicity distribution of some UFDs uncertain, our analysis reveals that this is essentially the metal-rich tail that is missing in the models. The remaining challenges are thus both observational and numerical: (i) to extend high-resolution spectroscopy data samples and confirm the mean metallicity of the faintest UFDs; and (ii) to explain the presence of chemically enriched stars in galaxies with very short star formation histories.

The Fornax3D project: Discovery of ancient massive merger events in the Fornax cluster galaxies NGC 1380 and NGC 1427

We report the discovery of ancient massive merger events in the early-type galaxies NGC 1380 and NGC 1427, members of the Fornax galaxy cluster. Both galaxies have been observed by the MUSE integral-field-unit instrument on the VLT as part of the Fornax3D project. By fitting recently developed population-orbital superposition models to the observed surface brightness, stellar kinematic, age, and metallicity maps, we obtain the stellar orbits, age, and metallicity distributions of each galaxy. We then decompose each galaxy into multiple orbital-based components, including a dynamically hot inner stellar halo component that is identified as the relic of past massive mergers. By comparing to analogs from cosmological galaxy simulations, chiefly TNG50, we find that the formation of such a hot inner stellar halo requires the merger with a now-destroyed massive satellite galaxy of $ 3.7_{-1.5}^{+2.7} \times 10^{10} $ M⊙ (about one-fifth of its current stellar mass) in the case of NGC 1380 and of $ 1.5_{-0.7}^{+1.6} \times10^{10} $ M⊙ (about one-fourth of its current stellar mass) in the case of NGC 1427. Moreover, we infer that the last massive merger in NGC 1380 happened ∼10 Gyr ago based on the stellar age distribution of the regrown dynamically cold disk, whereas the merger in NGC 1427 ended t ≲ 8 Gyr ago based on the stellar populations in its hot inner stellar halo. The major merger event in NGC 1380 is the first one with both merger mass and merger time quantitatively inferred in a galaxy beyond the local volume. Moreover, it is the oldest and most massive merger uncovered in nearby galaxies so far.

On the Stellar Metallicity Distribution Resulting from a Disrupted Milky Way Globular Cluster System

Consideration is given to the stellar metallicity distribution that would result from a hypothetical dissociation of all Milky Way globular clusters into field stars, and several characteristics are compared to an exponential distribution.

The Metallicity Distribution Function in Outer Halo Fields of Simulated Elliptical Galaxies Compared to Observations of NGC 5128

Stellar metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) have been measured for resolved stellar populations in the outer halos of many galaxies in nearby groups. Among them, the MDF of NGC 5128, the central giant elliptical in the Centaurus group, provides essential constraints for theories of massive galaxy formation and hierarchical assembly. To investigate the formation and chemical evolution history of the outer halo of giant elliptical galaxies, we examine the chemical properties of three zoom-in high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of an NGC 5128–like giant elliptical galaxy and compare their outer halo MDFs to the observed one of NGC 5128. Even though the simulated galaxies have different merging histories and age distributions, all predicted MDFs are in good qualitative agreement with the observed one. The median metallicity of the simulated galaxies is, on average, [M/H] = −0.41 ± 0.06 compared to the observed value of [M/H] = −0.38 ± 0.02 for NGC 5128, and the dispersion in metallicity is ∼0.77 dex for both observed and simulated galaxies. We investigate the origin of the stars ending up in the outer halo field of simulated galaxies and show that most have an “accreted” origin, formed in other small galaxies and later accreted in mergers. Only ∼15% of the stars are formed in situ within the main progenitor of the galaxy and radially migrate outward. We show that the contribution of metal-rich in situ stars is subdominant in the outer halos of our simulated galaxies but can be prominent in the inner regions.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: drivers of stellar metallicity in nearby galaxies

ABSTRACT The distribution of stellar metallicities within and across galaxies is an excellent relic of the chemical evolution across cosmic time. We present a detailed analysis of spatially resolved stellar populations based on >2.6 million spatial bins from 7439 nearby galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-IV (SDSS-IV) Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey. To account for accurate inclination corrections, we derive an equation for morphology-dependent determination of galaxy inclinations. Our study goes beyond the well-known global mass–metallicity relation and radial metallicity gradients by providing a statistically sound exploration of local relations between stellar metallicity [Z/H], stellar surface mass density Σ⋆, and galactocentric distance in the global mass–morphology plane. We find a significant resolved mass density–metallicity relation $r\Sigma _\star ZR$ for galaxies of all types and masses above $10^{9.8}\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$. Different radial distances make an important contribution to the spread of the relation. Particularly, in low- and intermediate-mass galaxies, we find that at fixed Σ⋆ metallicity increases with radius independently of morphology. For high masses, this radial dependence is only observed in high Σ⋆ regions of spiral galaxies. This result calls for a driver of metallicity, in addition to Σ⋆ that promotes chemical enrichment in the outer parts of galaxies more strongly than in the inner parts. We discuss gas accretion, outflows, recycling, and radial migration as possible scenarios.

The stellar metallicity distribution function of galaxies in the CALIFA survey

ABSTRACT We present a novel method to retrieve the chemical structure of galaxies using integral field spectroscopy data through the stellar Metallicity Distribution Function (MDF). This is the probability distribution of observing stellar populations having a metallicity Z. We apply this method to a set of 550 galaxies from the CALIFA survey. We present the behaviour of the MDF as a function of the morphology, the stellar mass, and the radial distance. We use the stellar metallicity radial profiles retrieved as the first moment of the MDF, as an internal test for our method. The gradients in these radial profiles are consistent with the known trends: they are negative in massive early-type galaxies and tend to positive values in less massive late-type ones. We find that these radial profiles may not convey the complex chemical structure of some galaxy types. Overall, low mass galaxies (log M⋆/M⊙ ≤ 10) have broad MDFs ($\sigma _Z\sim 1.0\,$ dex), with unclear dependence on their morphology. However this result is likely affected by under-represented bins in our sample. On the other hand, massive galaxies (log M⋆/M⊙ ≥ 11) have systematically narrower MDFs ($\sigma _Z\le 0.2\,$ dex). We find a clear trend whereby the MDFs at rk/Re > 1.5 have large variance. This result is consistent with sparse SFHs in medium/low stellar density regions. We further find there are multimodal MDFs in the outskirts ($\sim 18\,$ per cent) and the central regions ($\sim 40\,$ per cent) of galaxies. This behaviour is linked to a fast chemical enrichment during early stages of the SFH, along with the posterior formation of a metal-poor stellar population.

Clues on the history of early-type galaxies from SDSS spectra and GALEX photometry

ABSTRACT Stellar population studies of early-type galaxies (ETGs) based on their optical stellar continuum suggest that these are quiescent systems. However, emission lines and ultraviolet photometry reveal a diverse population. We use a new version of the starlight spectral synthesis code and state-of-the-art stellar population models to simultaneously fit Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra and Galaxy Evolution Explorer photometry for a sample of 3453 galaxies at z < 0.1 with near ultraviolet (NUV) − r > 5 that are classified as elliptical by Galaxy Zoo. We reproduce far ultraviolet (FUV) magnitudes for 80 per cent of UV upturn galaxies selected using criteria from the literature, suggesting that additional stellar population ingredients such as binaries and extreme horizontal branch stars may have a limited contribution to the UV upturn. The addition of ultraviolet data leads to a broadening of the distributions of mean stellar ages, metallicities, and attenuation. Stellar populations younger than $1\,$ Gyr are required to reproduce the ultraviolet emission in 17 per cent of our sample. These systems represent 43 per cent of the sample at 5 < NUV − r < 5.5 and span the same stellar mass range as other ETGs in our sample. ETGs with young stellar components have larger H α equivalent widths (WH α) and larger dust attenuation. Emission line ratios and WH α indicate that the ionizing source in these systems is a mixture of young and old stellar populations. Their young stellar populations are metal-poor, especially for high-mass galaxies, indicating recent star formation associated with rejuvenation events triggered by external processes, such as minor mergers.

Asymmetric spatial distribution of subsolar metallicity stars in the Milky Way nuclear star cluster

ABSTRACT We present stellar metallicity measurements of more than 600 late-type stars in the central 10 pc of the Galactic Centre. Together with our previously published KMOS data, this data set allows us to investigate, for the first time, spatial variations of the nuclear star cluster’s metallicity distribution. Using the integral-field spectrograph KMOS (VLT), we observed almost half of the area enclosed by the nuclear star cluster’s effective radius. We extract spectra at medium spectral resolution and apply full spectral fitting utilizing the PHOENIX library of synthetic stellar spectra. The stellar metallicities range from [M/H] = −1.25 dex to [M/H] > +0.3 dex, with most of the stars having supersolar metallicity. We are able to measure an anisotropy of the stellar metallicity distribution. In the Galactic north, the portion of subsolar metallicity stars with [M/H] < 0.0 dex is more than twice as high as in the Galactic south. One possible explanation for different fractions of subsolar metallicity stars in different parts of the cluster is a recent merger event. We propose to test this hypothesis with high-resolution spectroscopy and by combining the metallicity information with kinematic data.

Chemical evolution of ultrafaint dwarf galaxies: testing the IGIMF

ABSTRACT We test the integrated galactic initial mass function (IGIMF) on the chemical evolution of 16 ultrafaint dwarf (UFD) galaxies discussing in detail the results obtained for three of them: Boötes I, Boötes II, and Canes Venatici I, taken as prototypes of the smallest and the largest UFDs. These objects have very small stellar masses (∼103–104 M⊙) and quite low metallicities ([Fe/H] < −1.0 dex). We consider four observational constraints: the present-day stellar mass, the [α/Fe] versus [Fe/H] relation, the stellar metallicity distribution function and the cumulative star formation history. Our model follows in detail the evolution of several chemical species (H, He, α-elements, and Fe). We take into account detailed nucleosynthesis and gas flows (in and out). Our results show that the IGIMF, coupled with the very low star formation rate predicted by the model for these galaxies (∼10−4–10−6 M⊙yr−1), cannot reproduce the main chemical properties, because it implies a negligible number of core-collapse SNe and even Type Ia SNe, the most important polluters of galaxies. On the other hand, a constant classical Salpeter IMF gives the best agreement with data, but we cannot exclude that other formulations of the IGIMF could reproduce the properties of these galaxies. Comparing with Galaxy data, we suggest that UFDs could not be the building blocks of the entire Galactic halo, although more data are necessary to draw firmer conclusions.

Resolving the Metallicity Distribution of the Stellar Halo with the H3 Survey

Abstract The Galactic stellar halo is predicted to have formed at least partially from the tidal disruption of accreted dwarf galaxies. This assembly history should be detectable in the orbital and chemical properties of stars. The H3 Survey is obtaining spectra for 200,000 stars and, when combined with Gaia data, is providing detailed orbital and chemical properties of Galactic halo stars. Unlike previous surveys of the halo, the H3 target selection is based solely on magnitude and Gaia parallax; the survey therefore provides a nearly unbiased view of the entire stellar halo at high latitudes. In this paper we present the distribution of stellar metallicities as a function of Galactocentric distance and orbital properties for a sample of 4232 kinematically selected halo giants to 100 kpc. The stellar halo is relatively metal-rich, , and there is no discernible metallicity gradient over the range 6 < R gal < 100 kpc. However, the halo metallicity distribution is highly structured, including distinct metal-rich and metal-poor components at R gal < 10 kpc and R gal > 30 kpc, respectively. The Sagittarius stream dominates the metallicity distribution at 20–40 kpc for stars on prograde orbits. The Gaia–Enceladus merger remnant dominates the metallicity distribution for radial orbits to ≈30 kpc. Metal-poor stars with [Fe/H] < −2 are a small population of the halo at all distances and orbital categories. We associate the “in situ” stellar halo with stars displaying thick disk chemistry on halo-like orbits; such stars are confined to . The majority of the stellar halo is resolved into discrete features in chemical–orbital space, suggesting that the bulk of the stellar halo formed from the accretion and tidal disruption of dwarf galaxies. The relatively high metallicity of the halo derived in this work is a consequence of the unbiased selection function of halo stars and, in combination with the recent upward revision of the total stellar halo mass, implies a Galactic halo metallicity that is typical for its mass.

Star formation and gas flow history of a dwarf irregular galaxy traced by gas-phase and stellar metallicities

ABSTRACT Studying the evolution of dwarf galaxies can provide insights into the characteristics of systems that can act as building blocks of massive galaxies. This paper discusses the history of star formation and gas flows (inflow and outflow) of a dwarf irregular galaxy in the Local Group, NGC 6822, from the viewpoint of gas-phase and stellar chemical abundance. Gas-phase oxygen abundance, stellar metallicity distribution, and gas fraction data are compared to chemical evolution models in which continuous star formation and gas flows are assumed. If the galaxy is assumed to be a closed or an accretion-dominated system where steeper stellar initial mass functions are allowed, the observed gas-phase oxygen abundance and gas fraction can be explained simultaneously; however, metallicity distributions predicted by the models seem to be inconsistent with the observed distribution, which suggests that the star formation, gas flows, and/or chemical enrichment are more complex than assumed by the models. When NGC 6822 is assumed to be a system dominated by outflow, the observed values of gas-phase oxygen abundance and gas fraction can be explained, and the metallicity distributions predicted by some of the models are also roughly consistent with the observed distribution in the metallicity range of −2.0 ≲ [Fe/H] ≲ −0.5. It should be noted that this result does not necessarily mean that the accretion of gas is completely ruled out. More observables, such as chemical abundance ratios, and detailed modelling may provide deeper insight into the evolution of the system.

The total stellar halo mass of the Milky Way

ABSTRACT We measure the total stellar halo luminosity using red giant branch (RGB) stars selected from Gaia data release 2. Using slices in magnitude, colour, and location on the sky, we decompose RGB stars belonging to the disc and halo by fitting two-dimensional Gaussians to the Galactic proper motion distributions. The number counts of RGB stars are converted to total stellar halo luminosity using a suite of isochrones weighted by age and metallicity, and by applying a volume correction based on the stellar halo density profile. Our method is tested and calibrated using Galaxia and N-body models. We find a total luminosity (out to 100 kpc) of $L_{\rm halo} = 7.9 \pm 2.0 \times 10^8\, \mathrm{L}_\odot$ excluding Sgr, and $L_{\rm halo} = 9.4 \pm 2.4 \times 10^8\, \mathrm{L}_\odot$ including Sgr. These values are appropriate for our adopted stellar halo density profile and metallicity distribution, but additional systematics related to these assumptions are quantified and discussed. Assuming a stellar mass-to-light ratio appropriate for a Kroupa initial mass function (M⋆/L = 1.5), we estimate a stellar halo mass of $M^\star _{\rm halo} = 1.4 \pm 0.4\times 10^9 \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$. This mass is larger than previous estimates in the literature, but is in good agreement with the emerging picture that the (inner) stellar halo is dominated by one massive dwarf progenitor. Finally, we argue that the combination of a ${\sim}10^9\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ mass and an average metallicity of 〈[Fe/H]〉 ∼ −1.5 for the Galactic halo points to an ancient (∼10 Gyr) merger event.

Galactic Stellar Populations from Photometric Metallicity Distribution Functions

Abstract Based on Sloan Digital Sky Survey photometric data, Gu developed a new Monte-Carlo-based method for estimating the stellar metallicity distribution functions (MDFs). This method enables a more reliable determination of MDFs compared with the conventional polynomial-based methods. In this work, MDF determined from the method are well fit by a three-Gaussian model, with peaks at [Fe/H] = −0.68, −1.38, and −1.90, associated with the thick disk, the inner halo, and the outer halo, respectively. The vertical metallicity gradient within 1 < Z < 5 kpc is around R = 8.25 kpc. But the mean radial gradient is almost negligible. The density profile of the thick disk is fitted with a modified double exponential law decaying to a constant at far distance. The scale height and scale length thus estimated are H ≈ 1.13 kpc and L ≈ 3.63 kpc, which are consistent with the results determined from star-count methods in previous studies. The halos are described with a two-axial power-law ellipsoid, and the axis ratios of both the inner halo and the outer halo, inferred from stellar number density in the R–Z plane, are q ih ≈ 0.49 and q oh ≈ 0.61, respectively. It also manifests that the outer halo is more spherical than the inner halo. Moreover, the halo power-law indices estimated are n ih ≈ 3.4 and n oh ≈ 3.1, indicating that the stellar number density of the inner halo changes more steeply than that of outer halo.

The Fall of a Giant. Chemical evolution of Enceladus, alias the Gaia Sausage

ABSTRACT We present the first chemical evolution model for Enceladus, alias the Gaia Sausage, to investigate the star formation history of one of the most massive satellites accreted by the Milky Way during a major merger event. Our best chemical evolution model for Enceladus nicely fits the observed stellar [α/Fe]–[Fe/H] chemical abundance trends, and reproduces the observed stellar metallicity distribution function, by assuming low star formation efficiency, fast infall time-scale, and mild outflow intensity. We predict a median age for Enceladus stars $12.33^{+0.92}_{-1.36}$ Gyr, and – at the time of the merger with our Galaxy (≈10 Gyr ago from Helmi et al.) – we predict for Enceladus a total stellar mass M⋆ ≈ 5 × 109 M$\odot$. By looking at the predictions of our best model, we discuss that merger events between the Galaxy and systems like Enceladus may have inhibited the gas accretion on to the Galaxy disc at high redshifts, heating up the gas in the halo. This scenario could explain the extended period of quenching in the star formation activity of our Galaxy about 10 Gyr ago, which is predicted by Milky Way chemical evolution models, in order to reproduce the observed bimodality in [α/Fe]–[Fe/H] between thick- and thin-disc stars.

SN1991bg-like supernovae are associated with old stellar populations

Abstract SN1991bg-like supernovae are a distinct subclass of thermonuclear Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). Their spectral and photometric peculiarities indicate that their progenitors and explosion mechanisms differ from ‘normal’ SNe Ia. One method of determining information about supernova progenitors we cannot directly observe is to observe the stellar population adjacent to the apparent supernova explosion site to infer the distribution of stellar population ages and metallicities. We obtain integral field observations and analyse the spectra extracted from regions of projected radius $\sim\,\text{kpc}$ about the apparent SN explosion site for 11 91bg-like SNe in both early- and late-type galaxies. We utilise full-spectrum spectral fitting to determine the ages and metallicities of the stellar population within the aperture. We find that the majority of the stellar populations that hosted 91bg-like supernovae have little recent star formation. The ages of the stellar populations suggest that that 91bg-like SN progenitors explode after delay times of >6 Gyr, much longer than the typical delay time of normal SNe Ia, which peaks at $\sim$ 1 Gyr.

Barlenses in the CALIFA survey: Combining photometric and stellar population analyses

Aims: It is theoretically predicted that, at low galaxy inclinations, boxy/peanut bar components have a barlens appearance of a round central component embedded in the narrow bar. We investigate barlenses in the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey galaxies, studying their morphologies, stellar populations, and metallicities. We show that, when present, barlenses account for a significant portion of light of photometric bulges, i.e., the excess light on top of the disks, which highlights the importance of bars in accumulating central galaxy mass concentrations in the cosmic timescale. Methods: We made multi-component decompositions for a sample of 46 barlens galaxies drawn from the CALIFA survey, where M⋆/M⊙ = 109.7 − 1011.4 and z = 0.005 − 0.03. Unsharp masks of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) r′-band mosaics were used to identify the boxy/peanut or X-shaped features. Barlenses are identified in the images using our simulation snapshots as an additional guide. Our decompositions with GALFIT include bulges, disks, and bars as well as barlenses as a separate component. For 26 of the decomposed galaxies the CALIFA DR2 V500 grating data cubes were used to explore stellar ages and metallicities at the regions of various structure components. Results: We find that 25 ± 2% of the 1064 galaxies in the whole CALIFA sample show either X-shaped or barlens features. In the decomposed galaxies with barlenses, on average 13% ± 2% of the total galaxy light belongs to this component, leaving less than 10% for possible separate bulge components. Most importantly, bars and barlenses are found to have similar cumulative stellar age and metallicity distributions. The metallicities in barlenses are on average near solar, but exhibit a large range. In some of the galaxies barlenses and X-shaped features appear simultaneously, in which case the bar origin of the barlens is unambiguous. Conclusion: This is the first time that a combined morphological and stellar population analysis is used to study barlenses. We show that their stars are accumulated in a prolonged time period concurrently with the evolution of the narrow bar.

Pushing back the limits: detailed properties of dwarf galaxies in a ΛCDM universe

We present the results of a set of high-resolution chemo-dynamical simulations of dwarf galaxies in a ΛCDM cosmology. Out of an original (3.4 Mpc/h)3 cosmological box, a sample of 27 systems are re-simulated from z = 70 to z = 0 using a zoom-in technique. Gas and stellar properties are confronted to the observations in the greatest details: in addition to the galaxy global properties, we investigated the model galaxy velocity dispersion profiles, half-light radii, star formation histories, stellar metallicity distributions, and [Mg/Fe] abundance ratios. The formation and sustainability of the metallicity gradients and kinematically distinct stellar populations are also tackled. We show how the properties of six Local Group dwarf galaxies, NGC 6622, Andromeda II, Sculptor, Sextans, Ursa Minor and Draco are reproduced, and how they pertain to three main galaxy build-up modes. Our results indicate that the interaction with a massive central galaxy could be needed for a handful of Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies only, the vast majority of the systems and their variety of star formation histories arising naturally from a ΛCDM framework. We find that models fitting well the local Group dwarf galaxies are embedded in dark haloes of mass between 5 × 108 to a few 109 M⊙, without any missing satellite problem. We confirm the failure of the abundance matching approach at the mass scale of dwarf galaxies. Some of the observed faint however gas-rich galaxies with residual star formation, such as Leo T and Leo P, remain challenging. They point out the need of a better understanding of the UV-background heating.
