Synthesis, Corrosion Inhibition, In Silico ADME, DFT, and Antibacterial Activity of Pyridine‐Based Schiff Base and Its Cu (II) Complex

ABSTRACTHerein, we report the synthesis of an (E)‐N‐(pyridine‐3‐ylmethylene)pyridine‐2‐amine Schiff base (ENppa) and its Cu (II) complex (Cu‐ENppa) using 2‐aminopyridine (2APy) and pyridine‐3‐carbaldehyde (P3C). This study aimed to investigate the ADMET profiles, electronic features, antibacterial and anticorrosion activities of the synthesized ligand, and its Cu (II) complex. The compounds were characterized using various techniques, including CHN analysis, FT‐IR, 1H and 13C NMR, MALDI‐TOF MS, ICP‐MS, SEM, TGA/DTA, UV–visible spectroscopy, and powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD). The Cu (II) ion exhibited tetrahedral geometry in the complex by coordinating with two nitrogen atoms, one from an imine group and the other from a pyridine ring. UV–visible spectroscopy and magnetic moment data also supported this geometry. TGA/DTA revealed three stages of decomposition at 141°C°C–255°C, 255°C°C–367°C, and 549°C°C–659°C, with CuO as the final residue. PXRD analysis identified ENppa and Cu‐ENppa as nanocrystallites, with crystallinities of 82% and 49%, respectively. Both compounds were highly effective in inhibiting mild steel corrosion in acidic media, with inhibition efficiencies of 97% and 98%, respective for Cu‐ENppa and ENppa. They also exhibited favorable ADME profiles, indicating potential as drug candidates for in silico ADME studies. The antibacterial activity results demonstrated promising efficacy, with Cu‐ENppa showing higher activity than ENppa.

Assessment of ethanolic extract of Dittrichia viscosa from Kardoussa Douar region of Taza in Morocco as antioxidant and green inhibitor for carbon steel corrosion in acidic medium

This study targeted evaluating the anticorrosive and antioxidative characteristics of Dittrichia viscosa (ZS-OH) extract. ZS-OH was first extracted by deploying a soxhlet and characterized by chromatographic analysis (GC/MS). In addition, a quantitative assessment of the total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoids (FC) content of the ZS-OH extract, as well as phytochemical analyses, were carried out. Antioxidant testing was conducted using the bioassay: 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The ability of ZS-OH extract to stymie the corrosion of carbon steel in 1.0 M HCl was considered through potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). ZS-OH extract yield was 4.73 %, and GC-MS revealed 32 distinct chemicals. Neryl isovalerate (29.8 %), 1,10-di-epi-Cubenol (25.4 %), and 2,5-dimethoxy-p-cymene (11.6 %) made up the majority of the ZS-OH extract. The electrochemical results reveal that the ZS-OH extract acts as a mixed-type with an inhibition efficiency of up to 96.8 % at 500 ppm under 303 K. Surface analyses using SEM/EDS confirmed the formation of the protective layer of ZS-OH extract molecules on the C-S surface. The three major components are fully optimized in the DFT through the B3LYP functional and 6–311++G(d,p) basis sets. Molecular dynamics simulation data show the molecules of ZS-OH extract oriented beneficially on metal surfaces, providing a high surface coverage, and thus, a high inhibition performance.

Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Inhibitors for Steel Corrosion in Acidic Media

The inhibitory action of eco-friendly food waste extracts, Red Beta Vulgaris leaves (R.B.V.L) and Prunus cerasus seeds (P.C.S), on the B7 grade steel corrosion in 1.0 M HCl were investigated utilizing chemical and electrochemical measurements. The functional groups of both extracts have been predicted utilizing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The potentiodynamic polarization technique reveals that the two extracts act as a mixed-type inhibitor. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique shows that the corrosion process is controlled via charge transfer. Both extracts exhibit a maximum inhibitory efficiency of 75%. Langmuir and Flory–Huggins isotherms, as well as the Kinetic-thermodynamic model, were used to study the inhibition mode of both extracts. The values of the change in free energy of adsorption, ΔGads, demonstrate that the adsorption occurs via the physisorption (electrostatic) mechanism. The activation parameters were determined and discussed. The quantum chemical calculations have proceeded to show the main active ingredients.

Experimental and computational studies of novel cyclic ammonium based ionic liquids as corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in acid medium

The challenge of corrosion posed as a result of acidic sittings is considered as a major industrial concern, wherein ionic liquids serve as crucial in addressing the corrosive impacts on metals. In this study, five selected cyclic ammonium based ionic liquids were synthesized; IL-1MPyrBr, IL-1MPipBr, IL-2PyBr, IL-3MPyBr and IL-4MPyBr and their chemical structures were characterized using a variety of spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR, IH-NMR, 13C-NMR, Elemental analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Their corrosion inhibition efficiency was studied on carbon steel in 1 M HCl via different concentrations at 298 K using chemical and electrochemical parameters (PDP and EIS). DFT quantum parameters were computed, and the noted results were in complete compatible with the experimental. The synthesized ILs recorded excellent inhibition on the carbon steel corrosion in acidic media with increasing efficiency by increasing the inhibitor concentrations from 20 to 100 ppm. Different cations in the synthesized ILs affect the anti-corrosion effect and IL-3MPyBr showed the highest inhibition (ηR); 96.12% using the lowest concentration. Kinetic and thermodynamic considerations were studied and illustrated.

An environmentally sustainable approach for the utilization of Erigeron bonariensis as a green inhibitor against weathering steel corrosion in acidic media.

In the realm of corrosion mitigation, the search for sustainable and ecologically accountable inhibitors attracts significant interest from the environmental point of view. This study investigates the intriguing possibilities presented by Erigeron bonariensis (EB) as a green and innovative corrosion inhibitor for weathering steel in 1 M H2SO4. EB, a naturally abundant plant species, holds promise as a green and sustainable inhibitor due to its inherent chemical composition in the environment. The intricate interplay between the phytochemical constituents of the extract and the corrosive environment is meticulously deciphered. Furthermore, the environmentally benign nature of the inhibitor adds an extra layer of significance to its application, aligning with contemporary green chemistry principles. The inhibition effect of Erigeron bonariensis (EB) extract on the corrosion of mild steel in acidic media (H2SO4) was studied using weight loss, absorption studies, phytochemical analysis, electrochemical methods, and scanning electron microscopy. The experimental findings revealed that an increase in inhibitor concentration is correlated with higher inhibition efficiency. The adsorption of inhibitor molecules on the mild steel surface was found to agree with the UV-Vis adsorption spectrum. Additionally, a surface study conducted using scanning electron microscopy indicated notable differences in the presence and absence of inhibitors for weathering steel. At 2000 mg L-1, EB extract has the best inhibitory efficiency for weathering steel in 1 M H2SO4 of 99.50% by the leaf part, followed by 94.35% by the flower part, and 85.22% by the stem part. Overall, this study suggests that EB extract serves as a promising alternative for corrosion prevention, demonstrating significant inhibition efficiency.

Efficient inhibition of mild steel corrosion in acidic medium by novel pyrimidine derivatives: Inhibitive effect evaluation and interface adsorption mechanism

In the pickling, oil well acidification, and other industrial processes, mild steel would suffer from severe corrosion in the acidic environment. In this work, two novel pyrimidine derivatives, 2-Benzylthio-6-methylpyrimidin-4(3H)-one (BMPO) and 4-Benzyloxy-2-benzylthio-6-methylpyrimidine (BBMP), were synthesized through nucleophilic substitution reaction, and used as eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in HCl medium. The corrosion inhibition properties of BMPO and BBMP were investigated using electrochemical tests, surface analyses, and theoretical calculations. The experimental results indicate that BMPO and BBMP have superior inhibition effect, with high inhibition efficiency (99.28% and 99.69% at 0.6 mM) and good corrosion inhibition stability. Theoretical calculations reveal that the interface adsorption of BMPO and BBMP is achieved by the bonding of N, S, O atoms and the benzene ring to steel surface. The protonation of BMPO and BBMP molecules could further promote their adsorption. Compared to BMPO, the modification with more benzyl groups lowers the polarity and increases the hydrophobicity of BBMP. Then BBMP molecules could adsorb on steel surface to create a hydrophobic film with a large coverage, which accounts for the better corrosion inhibition effect of BBMP.

Nonlinear dynamics of ascorbic acid‐KI interaction on carbon steel corrosion in acid medium

AbstractAscorbic acid (AA) has been reported as a corrosion inhibitor of carbon steel. The combined effect of AA and potassium iodide (KI) in the dynamics of the corrosion process of 1018 carbon steel is studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and electrochemical noise (EN) in an acid medium. EN data were used for nonlinear analysis by means of recurrence plots and their corresponding parameters, as well as by delay maps. Important information about the corrosion process of carbon steel corrosion in the presence of these two substances was obtained. AA does not behave as an inhibitor in this system, but the influence of KI is significant in inhibitor efficiency. The dynamics is established mainly by the adsorption of the I− ions on the steel surface and confirmed by the information entropy. The action of AA is to increase the degree of chaos when concentration increases. A relevant aspect determined is the relationship between the nonlinear dynamics of a corrosion process and its intensity.

N-doped and Cu,N-doped carbon dots as corrosion inhibitor for mild steel corrosion in acid medium

In the present study, N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) and Cu,N-doped carbon dots (Cu,N-CDs) with various Cu doping amounts were explored as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel substrate. Material characterizations of synthesized materials were performed using UV-Vis, FTIR and XRD, TEM and XPS techniques. Electrochemical corrosion testing showed enhanced corrosion inhibition performance for Cu,N-CDs relative to N-CDs. The inhibition efficiencies were directly proportional to concentrations of N-CDs and Cu,N-CDs, with more than 97% achieved at 100 ppm of Cu,N-CDs. Gravimetric measurements at temperatures ranging from 40 to 70 ℃ revealed a slight increase in inhibition efficiencies from 99.5 % to 99.7 % for higher Cu doped Cu,N-CDs. Protective nature of N-CDs and Cu,N-CDs was accredited to physicochemical adsorption and inhibitor film formation. In addition, the growth of an electroless like Cu deposit on the mild steel surface contributed to better inhibition performances of Cu,N-CDs. The inhibition mechanism was supported by surface characterization of inhibited steel substrate.

Effect of selected 3-chloromethylcoumarin derivatives on mild steel corrosion in acidic medium: experimental and computational studies

Two 3-chloromethylcoumarins synthesized via the Baylis-Hillman reaction have been investigated for their ability to inhibit corrosion of mild steel in 2.0 M HCl. The inhibition efficiency was evaluated by gravimetric and electrochemical methods. Inhibition efficiency was found to increase with increase in concentration of the 3-chloromethylcoumarins. Kinetics, thermodynamics and adsorption equilibrium of the corrosion of steel in the acid and acid-containing 3-chloromethylcoumarins media were investigated. The results showed that the inhibitive actions of the compounds occurred as a result of adsorption of 3-chloromethylcoumarins molecules on mild steel surface. 3-Chloromethyl-8-ethoxycoumarin 4a showed higher inhibition efficiencies than 6-chloro-3-chloromethylcoumarin 4b, especially at low concentrations and temperatures. Physical adsorption was predicted based on decreasing surface coverage of the inhibitor molecules with increase in temperature. The studied 3-chloromethylcoumarins behaved as mixed-type corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in 2 M HCl. The higher electron-donating ability and lower energy gap of 4a compared to 4b, as derived from computational studies suggest that 4a has higher potentials to inhibit steel corrosion in HCl than 4b. Similar trend was reflected in the Monte Carlo simulations adsorption energies.

Elektrokimyasal İnceleme ve DFT Yaklaşımı: 2-izopropil-4-metil-1,3-tiyazol-5-karboksilik asidin Yumuşak Çeliğin Korozyonuna Karşı İnhibisyon Etkisi

In this study, the inhibitory properties of 2-isopropyl-4-methyl-1,3-thiazole-5-carboxylic acid (2I4MTA5C) against mild steel corrosion in acidic medium were investigated by electrochemical and quantum theoretical methods. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements and polarization curves were obtained in the presence and absence of 5 mM 2I4MTA5C in 0.5 M HCl during 168 hours of immersion, and the adsorption isotherm is presented. Experimental results were compared with quantum theoretical parameters in order to establish a relationship between molecular structure and electrochemical behavior and to investigate it in depth. According to the results obtained for the 168 hour immersion time, the resistance values for MS were 9.8 in the absence of 5 mM 2I4MTA5C and 200 ohm.cm-2 in the presence. The calculated corrosion current density values were 2.65 and 0.13 mA.cm-2 for MS in HCl and 5 mM 2I4MTA5C + HCl solution, respectively. The theoretically calculated HOMO and LUMO values were -6.88 eV and -1.80 eV. According to the results obtained, we can say that 2I4MTA5C is a suitable inhibitor candidate with 95.1% protection against mild steel corrosion.

Experimental, DFT and MD evaluation of Nandina domestica Thunb. extract as green inhibitor for carbon steel corrosion in acidic medium

Plant extracts with the advantages of environment–friendly, renewable and rich resources, can be used as promising corrosion inhibitors in pickling or descaling processes. In this study, the inhibition performance and inhibition mechanism of Nandina domestica Thunb. extract (NDTE) for carbon steel in HCl solution was evaluated by electrochemical experiments, component analysis, surface characterization and theoretical calculations. The results show that NDTE can significantly inhibit the corrosion of carbon steel in HCl solution, and its maximum corrosion inhibition efficiency can reach 96.0% at 298 K. In addition, NDTE still exhibited excellent corrosion inhibition performance at 328 K, with a 93.5% corrosion inhibition efficiency. The Tafel results indicate that NDTE is a mixed–type inhibitor, and its adsorption on the surface of carbon steel conforms to the Langmuir isotherm model. Surface characterization shows that NDTE has attractive inhibition performance for carbon steel over a wide temperature range. In addition, the inhibition mechanism of NDTE were studied by quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics simulation. This work provides a useful insight into the anti–corrosion of carbon steel during industrial pickling or descaling processes.

Inhibition of Mild Steel Corrosion in Acidic Media Using Palmyra Palm Peduncle Extract: Experimental and Theoretical Investigation

Utilizing gravimetric and electrochemical measurement techniques, the effective performance of inhibitive and adsorption properties of aqueous extract obtained from destructive distillation of palmyra palm (Borassus flabellifer Linn.) peduncle (BFP) for the corrosion of mild steel (MS) in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1 M HCl were investigated. From the experimental results, an aqueous extract of BFP was found to be a good adsorption inhibitor for the corrosion of MS in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1 M HCl solutions. The inhibition potentials of the aqueous extract of the palmyra palm peduncle are enhanced by its phytochemical constituents. The density functional theory was utilized to examine the BFP extract/mild steel surface mechanism's properties and to describe the inhibitor's structural nature on the corrosion process. The surface morphological alterations of metal specimens in both inhibited and uninhibited solutions were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was used to validate the presence of phenolic components in the BFP extract.

Naturally Occurring Exudates Gums as Ecofriendly Inhibitors for Mild Steel Corrosion in Acidic Medium

The corrosion inhibition potentials of gum exudates from Daniella oliveri (DO) and Commiphora Africana (CA) for the corrosion of mild steel in H2 SO4 have been studied using weight loss and thermometric methods at 303 and 333K. Results show that the exudates gum actually reduced the rates of corrosion of mild steel. Increase in the concentrations of the exudate’s gums increased their percentage inhibition efficiencies. Corrosion rate was found to increase with increase in temperature in the presence and absence of the gum exudates, though the corrosion rate was slower in the presence of the exudates gums. Both DO and CA exudates gums were found to obey Temkin and Langmuir adsorption models at all concentrations and temperatures studied. Physical adsorption mechanism was proposed from the adsorption parameters. Kinetic and thermodynamic parameters revealed that the adsorption process is spontaneous, exothermic and no significant difference was found between the inhibition efficiencies of DO and CA.
