Research on a soft saturation nonlinear SSVEP signal feature extraction algorithm

Brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) based on steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) have received widespread attention due to their high information transmission rate, high accuracy, and rich instruction set. However, the performance of its identification methods strongly depends on the amount of calibration data for within-subject classification. Some studies use deep learning (DL) algorithms for inter-subject classification, which can reduce the calculation process, but there is still much room for improvement in performance compared with intra-subject classification. To solve these problems, an efficient SSVEP signal recognition deep learning network model e-SSVEPNet based on the soft saturation nonlinear module is proposed in this paper. The soft saturation nonlinear module uses a similar exponential calculation method for output when it is less than zero, improving robustness to noise. Under the conditions of the SSVEP data set, two sliding time window lengths (1 s and 0.5 s), and three training data sizes, this paper evaluates the proposed network model and compares it with other traditional and deep learning model baseline methods. The experimental results of the nonlinear module were classified and compared. A large number of experimental results show that the proposed network has the highest average accuracy of intra-subject classification on the SSVEP data set, improves the performance of SSVEP signal classification and recognition, and has higher decoding accuracy under short signals, so it has huge potential ability to realize high-speed SSVEP-based for BCI.

Comparison of recognition methods for an asynchronous (un-cued) BCI system: an investigation with 40-class SSVEP dataset.

Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based brain-computer Interface (BCI) has demonstrated the potential to manage multi-command targets to achieve high-speed communication. Recent studies on multi-class SSVEP-based BCI have focused on synchronous systems, which rely on predefined time and task indicators; thus, these systems that use passive approaches may be less suitable for practical applications. Asynchronous systems recognize the user's intention (whether or not the user is willing to use systems) from brain activity; then, after recognizing the user's willingness, they begin to operate by switching swiftly for real-time control. Consequently, various methodologies have been proposed to capture the user's intention. However, in-depth investigation of recognition methods in asynchronous BCI system is lacking. Thus, in this work, three recognition methods (power spectral density analysis, canonical correlation analysis (CCA), and support vector machine (SVM)) used widely in asynchronous SSVEP BCI systems were explored to compare their performance. Further, we categorized asynchronous systems into two approaches (1-stage and 2-stage) based upon the recognition process's design, and compared their performance. To do so, a 40-class SSVEP dataset collected from 40 subjects was introduced. Finally, we found that the CCA-based method in the 2-stage approach demonstrated statistically significantly higher performance with a sensitivity of 97.62±02.06%, specificity of 76.50±23.50%, and accuracy of 75.59±10.09%. Thus, it is expected that the 2-stage approach together with CCA-based recognition and FB-CCA classification have good potential to be implemented in practical asynchronous SSVEP BCI systems.

An open dataset for human SSVEPs in the frequency range of 1-60 Hz

A steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) system relies on the photic driving response to effectively elicit characteristic electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. However, traditional visual stimuli mainly adopt high-contrast black-and-white flickering stimulations, which are easy to cause visual fatigue. This paper presents an SSVEP dataset acquired at a wide frequency range from 1 to 60 Hz with an interval of 1 Hz using flickering stimuli under two different modulation depths. This dataset contains 64-channel EEG data from 30 healthy subjects when they fixated on a single flickering stimulus. The stimulus was rendered on an LCD display with a refresh rate of 240 Hz. Initially, the dataset was rigorously validated through comprehensive data analysis to investigate SSVEP responses and user experiences. Subsequently, BCI performance was evaluated through offline simulations of frequency-coded and phase-coded BCI paradigms. This dataset provides comprehensive and high-quality data for studying and developing SSVEP-based BCI systems.

Temporally Local Weighting-Based Phase-Locked Time-Shift Data Augmentation Method for Fast-Calibration SSVEP-BCI.

Various training-based spatial filtering methods have been proposed to decode steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) efficiently. However, these methods require extensive calibration data to obtain valid spatial filters and temporal templates. The time-consuming data collection and calibration process would reduce the practicality of SSVEP-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). Therefore, we propose a temporally local weighting-based phase-locked time-shift (TLW-PLTS) data augmentation method to augment training data for calculating valid spatial filters and temporal templates. In this method, the sliding window strategy using the SSVEP response period as a time-shift step is to generate the augmented data, and the time filter which maximises the temporally local covariance between the original template signal and the sine-cosine reference signal is used to suppress the temporal noise in the augmented data. For the performance evaluation, the TLW-PLTS method was incorporated with state-of-the-art training-based spatial filtering methods to calculate classification accuracies and information transfer rates (ITRs) using three SSVEP datasets. Compared with state-of-the-art training-based spatial filtering methods and other data augmentation methods, the proposed TLW-PLTS method demonstrates superior decoding performance with fewer calibration data, which is promising for the development of fast-calibration BCIs.

Enhancing multi-class SSVEP classification performance using regularized covariance estimators, spatiotemporal beamforming, and short-time EEG trials

One of the main challenges in BCI technologies is the problem of poor information transfer rate (ITR) of BCI systems and its effect on reducing the commands users can give. At the state of the art, the Linearly Constrained Minimum Variance (LCMV) beamformer is one of the most effective strategies that can provide satisfactory performance in the analysis of steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP). When only a short-period SSVEP signal is available, a poor estimate of the covariance matrix used in the original LCMV method is obtained. Therefore, the main drawback of the conventional LCMV beamformer and its spatiotemporal form (LCMVst) is that they require a long-period SSVEP signal to achieve a reliable estimate for the beamformer weights. To cope with the mentioned problems, this paper presents two types of regularized estimators to achieve a robust estimate for the covariance matrix when only a short-period SSVEP signal is available. These two types, which are user-independent, include the convex combination (CC) and general linear combination (GLC) methods. In the next step, in order to provide suitable beamformer weights, the CC and GLC covariance estimators are combined with the original LCMVst beamformer. Furthermore, two new subject-based electrode selection algorithms, i.e., sequential forward electrode selection (SFES) algorithm and common spatial pattern (CSP) based technique, are applied to pick out the best collection of electrodes and to maximize the classification accuracy. The introduced methods were assessed using a four-class SSVEP dataset recorded on 20 subjects. Experimental results indicate that the proposed estimators optimally classify SSVEPs by estimating proper beamformer weights. The proposed LCMVst-CC and LCMVst-GLC beamformers improved the average classification accuracy by about 27.75% in comparison to the original LCMV-based beamformer at the 0.25-second segment length. Using SSVEP stimulations, we show that our proposed beamformers offer a better classification performance than the conventional LCMV-based spatiotemporal beamformer for all stimulation times.

Spectrum-Enhanced TRCA (SE-TRCA): A novel approach for direction detection in SSVEP-based BCI

The Steady State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP) is a widely used component in BCIs due to its high noise resistance and low equipment requirements. Recently, a novel SSVEP-based paradigm has been introduced for direction detection, in which, unlike the common SSVEP paradigms that use several frequency stimuli, only one flickering stimulus is used and it makes direction detection very challenging. So far, only the CCA method has been used for direction detection using SSVEP component analysis. Since Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) has some limitations, a Task-Related Component Analysis (TRCA) based method has been introduced for feature extraction to improve the direction detection performance.Although these methods have been proven efficient, they do not utilize the latent frequency information in the EEG signal. Therefore, the performance of direction detection using SSVEP component analysis is still suboptimal. For further improvement, the TRCA-based algorithm is enhanced by incorporating frequency information and introducing Spectrum-Enhanced TRCA (SE-TRCA). SE-TRCA method can utilize frequency information in conjunction with spatial information by concatenating the EEG signal and its shifted version. Accordingly, the obtained spatio-spectral filters perform as a Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter.To evaluate the proposed SE-TRCA method, two different sorts of datasets (1) a hybrid BCI dataset (including SSVEP component for direction detection) and (2) a pure benchmark SSVEP dataset (including SSVEP component for frequency detection) have been used. Our experiments showed that the accuracy of direction detection using the proposed SE-TRCA and TRCA approaches compared to CCA-based approach have been increased by 23.35% and 28.24%, respectively. Furthermore, the accuracy of character recognition obtained from integrating P300 and SSVEP components in CCA, TRCA, and SETRCA approaches are 54.01%, 56.02%, and 58.56%, on the hybrid dataset, respectively. The evaluation of the SE-TRCA method on the benchmark SSVEP dataset demonstrates that the SE-TRCA method outperforms both CCA and TRCA, particularly regarding frequency detection accuracy. In this specific dataset, the SE-TRCA method achieved an impressive frequency detection accuracy of 98.19% for a 3-s signal, surpassing the accuracies of TRCA and CCA, which were 97.91% and 90.47%, respectively.These results demonstrated that the TRCA-based approach is more efficient than the CCA approach to extracting spatial filters. Moreover, SE-TRCA, extracting both Spectral and spatial information from the EEG signal, can capture more discriminative features from the SSVEP component and increase the accuracy of classification. The results of this study emphasize the effectiveness of the proposed SE-TRCA approach across different SSVEP paradigms and tasks. These findings provide strong evidence for the method’s ability to generalize well in SSVEP analysis.

Dataset Evaluation Method and Application for Performance Testing of SSVEP-BCI Decoding Algorithm.

Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) systems have been extensively researched over the past two decades, and multiple sets of standard datasets have been published and widely used. However, there are differences in sample distribution and collection equipment across different datasets, and there is a lack of a unified evaluation method. Most new SSVEP decoding algorithms are tested based on self-collected data or offline performance verification using one or two previous datasets, which can lead to performance differences when used in actual application scenarios. To address these issues, this paper proposed a SSVEP dataset evaluation method and analyzed six datasets with frequency and phase modulation paradigms to form an SSVEP algorithm evaluation dataset system. Finally, based on the above datasets, performance tests were carried out on the four existing SSVEP decoding algorithms. The findings reveal that the performance of the same algorithm varies significantly when tested on diverse datasets. Substantial performance variations were observed among subjects, ranging from the best-performing to the worst-performing. The above results demonstrate that the SSVEP dataset evaluation method can integrate six datasets to form a SSVEP algorithm performance testing dataset system. This system can test and verify the SSVEP decoding algorithm from different perspectives such as different subjects, different environments, and different equipment, which is helpful for the research of new SSVEP decoding algorithms and has significant reference value for other BCI application fields.

Analysis of SSVEP component acquisition from EEG signals for efficient target identification

The application of the brain-computer interface (BCI) is massively helpful and advantageous for disabled people. Moreover, BCI is an arrangement of software and hardware interface that provides a direct interaction between the human brain and computer devices. Therefore, in this article, A steady state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCI system is presented to identify SSVEP components from multi-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) data by minimizing background noise using an adaptive spatial filtering method. Here, the proposed adaptive spatial filtering-based SSVEP component extraction (ASFSCE) model improves reproducibility among multiple trails and identifies targets efficiently by optimizing the Eigenvalue problem. Along with that, the proposed ASFSCE model minimizes computational complexity from O(G<sup>2</sup>) to to get high target identification accuracy with faster execution. Performance results are measured using the SSVEP dataset. In this dataset, 11 subjects are used to perform experiments and 256-channel EEG data is taken. The efficiency of the proposed ASFSCE model is measured in terms of mean target detection accuracy and mean information transfer rate (ITR) in bits per minute. The average detection accuracy and ITR are evaluated by considering 23 trials for each subject. The obtained detection accuracy is 93.47% and ITR is 308.23 bpm.

A Methodology for Enhancing SSVEP Features Using Adaptive Filtering Based on the Spatial Distribution of EEG Signals.

In this paper, we propose a classification algorithm of EEG signal based on canonical correlation analysis (CCA) and integrated with adaptive filtering. It can enhance the detection of steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) in a brain-computer interface (BCI) speller. An adaptive filter is employed in front of the CCA algorithm to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of SSVEP signals by removing background electroencephalographic (EEG) activities. The ensemble method is developed to integrate recursive least squares (RLS) adaptive filter corresponding to multiple stimulation frequencies. The method is tested by the SSVEP signal recorded from six targets by actual experiment and the EEG in a public SSVEP dataset of 40 targets from Tsinghua University. The accuracy rates of the CCA method and the CCA-based integrated RLS filter algorithm (RLS-CCA method) are compared. Experiment results show that the proposed RLS-CCA-based method significantly improves the classification accuracy compared with the pure CCA method. Especially when the number of EEG leads is low (three occipital electrodes and five non occipital electrodes), its advantage is more significant, and accuracy reaches 91.23%, which is more suitable for wearable environments where high-density EEG is not easy to collect.

Improving the performance of SSVEP-BCI contaminated by physiological noise via adversarial training

Brain-computer interface (BCI) based on Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) provides an effective method for human-computer communication. In practical application scenarios, SSVEP-BCI systems are easily interfered by physiological noises such as electromyography (EMG) and electrooculography (EOG). The performance of traditional SSVEP recognition methods will degrade in such a noisy environment, which limits their real-world applications. To alleviate the interference of noise, existing works either require additional reference electrodes or are designed for removing background noise such as trend terms rather than physiological noises. In this study, we utilize adversarial training (AT) and neural networks (NNs) to construct a robust recognition method for SSVEP contaminated by physiological noise. During model training, we generate adversarial noises which are most harmful to the current model according to gradients and enforce the model to overcome them. In this way, we strengthen the robustness of the model to potential noises, such as physiological noises. In this study, we recorded a real-world speaking SSVEP dataset and simulated various noisy datasets to conducted comparison experiments on two benchmark models named EEGNet and DeepConvNet. The experimental results demonstrated that AT strategies can help the neural networks get better performance on SSVEP data contaminated by EMG and EOG. We also verified that introducing AT can slightly improve the performance of models under a cross-subject scenario. Our method can be integrated into existing deep learning methods efficiently and will contribute to the real-world applications of SSVEP.

Fixed template network and dynamic template network: novel network designs for decoding steady-state visual evoked potentials

Objective. Decomposition methods are efficient to decode steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs). In recent years, the brain–computer interface community has also been developing deep learning networks for decoding SSVEPs. However, there is no clear evidence that current deep learning models outperform decomposition methods on the SSVEP decoding tasks. Many studies lacked the comparison with state-of-the-art decomposition methods in a fair environment. Approach. This study proposed a novel network design motivated by the works of decomposition methods. Fixed template network (FTN) and dynamic template network (DTN) are two novel networks combining the advantages of fixed templates and subject-specific templates. This study also proposed a data augmentation method for SSVEPs. This study compared the intra-subject classification performance of DTN and FTN with that of state-of-the-art decomposition methods on three public SSVEP datasets. Main results. The results show that both FTN and DTN achieved the suboptimal classification performance compared with state-of-the-art decomposition methods. Significance. Both network designs could enhance the decoding performance of SSVEPs, making them promising networks for improving the practicality of SSVEP-based applications.

An efficient CNN-LSTM network with spectral normalization and label smoothing technologies for SSVEP frequency recognition

Objective. Steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) based brain–computer interface (BCI) has received great interests owing to the high information transfer rate and available large number of targets. However, the performance of frequency recognition methods heavily depends on the amount of the calibration data for intra-subject classification. Some research adopted the deep learning (DL) algorithm to conduct the inter-subject classification, which could reduce the calculation procedure, but the performance still has large room to improve compared with the intra-subject classification. Approach. To address these issues, we proposed an efficient SSVEP DL NETwork (termed SSVEPNET) based on one-dimensional convolution and long short-term memory (LSTM) module. To enhance the performance of SSVEPNET, we adopted the spectral normalization and label smoothing technologies during implementing the network architecture. We evaluated the SSVEPNET and compared it with other methods for the intra- and inter-subject classification under different conditions, i.e. two datasets, two time-window lengths (1 s and 0.5 s), three sizes of training data. Main results. Under all the experimental settings, the proposed SSVEPNET achieved the highest average accuracy for the intra- and inter-subject classification on the two SSVEP datasets, when compared with other traditional and DL baseline methods. Significance. The extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DL model holds promise to enhance frequency recognition performance in SSVEP-based BCIs. Besides, the mixed network structures with convolutional neural network and LSTM, and the spectral normalization and label smoothing could be useful optimization strategies to design efficient models for electroencephalography data.

A Zero-Padding Frequency Domain Convolutional Neural Network for SSVEP Classification

The brain-computer interface (BCI) of steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) is one of the fundamental ways of human-computer communication. The main challenge is that there may be a nonlinear relationship between different SSVEP in other states. For improving the performance of SSVEP BCI, a novel CNN algorithm model is proposed in this study. Based on the discrete Fourier transform to calculate the signal's power spectral density (PSD), we perform zero-padding in the signal's time domain to improve its performance on the PSD and make it more refined. In this way, the frequency point interval in the PSD of the SSVEP is consistent with the minimum gap between the stimulation frequency. Combining the nonlinear transformation capabilities of CNN in deep learning, a zero-padding frequency domain convolutional neural network (ZPFDCNN) model is proposed. Extensive experiments based on the SSVEP dataset validate the effectiveness of our method. The study verifies that the proposed ZPFDCNN method can improve the effectiveness of the SSVEP-based high-speed BCI ITR. It has massive potential in the application of BCI.

Brain Computer Interface (BCI) is a system that enables people to communicate with the outside world and control various electronic devices by interpreting only brain activity (motor movement imagination, emotional state, any focused visual or auditory stimulus, etc.). The visual stimulation based recording is one of the most popular methods among various electroencephalography (EEG) recording methods. Steady-state visual-evoked potentials (SSVEPs) where visual objects are blinking at a fixed frequency play an important role due to their high signal-to-noise ratio and higher information transfer rate in BCI applications. However, the design of multiple (more than 3) commands systems in SSVEPs based BCI systems is limited. The different approaches are recommended to overcome these problems. In this study, an approach based on machine learning is proposed to determine stimulating frequency in SSVEP signals. The data set (AVI SSVEP Dataset) is obtained through open access from the internet for simulations. The dataset includes EEG signals that was recorded when subjects looked at a flickering frequency at seven different frequencies (6-6.5-7-7.5-8.2-9.3-10Hz). In the machine learning-based approach Wigner-Ville Distribution (WVD) is used and features are extracted using Time-Frequency (TF) representations of EEG signals. These features are classified by Decision Tree, Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Naive Bayes, Ensemble Learning classifiers. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieved promising accuracy rates for 7 command SSVEP systems. As a consequence, the maximum accuracy is achieved in the Ensemble Learning classifier with 47.60%.

Group ensemble learning enhances the accuracy and convenience of SSVEP-based BCIs via exploiting inter-subject information

Over the past years, Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) is widely used in brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) due to its high efficiency, robustness and convenience. Although the ensemble task-related component analysis (eTRCA) is a state-of-the-art signal processing algorithm for SSVEP signals, the tedious training process restricts its extensive application. In this study, a novel hybrid framework is proposed to conquer this problem by reusing the validation data recorded previously. Additionally, a new group ensemble learning method is also proposed to combine a filter bank canonical correlation analysis (FBCCA) detector and several eTRCA detectors to achieve a high-performance SSVEP detector. The offline analysis, which used a four-class SSVEP dataset recorded from 9 subjects in four days, demonstrates that the proposed method outperforms the FBCCA method and almost achieves the performance of the eTRCA method. The proposed method provides a good trade-off between performance and training cost, which is more suitable for application in real life.

Statistically Optimized Spatial Filtering in Decoding Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials Based on Task-Related Component Analysis.

Task-related component analysis (TRCA) has been the most effective spatial filtering method in implementing high-speed brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) based on steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs). TRCA is a data-driven method, in which spatial filters are optimized to maximize inter-trial covariance of time-locked electroencephalographic (EEG) data, formulated as a generalized eigenvalue problem. Although multiple eigenvectors can be obtained by TRCA, the traditional TRCA-based SSVEP detection considered only one that corresponds to the largest eigenvalue to reduce its computational cost. This study proposes using multiple eigen-vectors to classify SSVEPs. Specifically, this study integrates a task consistency test, which statistically identifies whether the component reconstructed by each eigenvector is task-related or not, with the TRCA-based SSVEP detection method. The proposed method was evaluated by using a 12-class SSVEP dataset recorded from 10 subjects. The study results indicated that the task consistency test usually identified and suggested more than one eigenvectors (i.e., spatial filters). Further, the use of additional spatial filters significantly improved the classification accuracy of the TRCA-based SSVEP detection.

A CNN-based comparing network for the detection of steady-state visual evoked potential responses

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) based on Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEPs) has been attracting much attention because of its high information transfer rate and little user training. However, most methods applied to decode SSVEPs are limited to CCA and some extended CCA-based methods. This study proposed a comparing network based on Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), which was used to learn the relationship between EEG signals and the templates corresponding to each stimulus frequency of SSVEPs. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by comparing it with the standard CCA and other state-of-the art methods for decoding SSVEPs (i.e., CNN and TRCA) on the actual SSVEP datasets collected from 23 subjects. The comparison results indicate that the CNN-based comparing network can significantly improve the classification accuracy. Furthermore, the comparing network with TRCA achieved the best performance among three methods based on comparing network with the averaged accuracy of 91.24% (data length: 2s) and 86.15% (data length: 1s). The study validated the efficiency of the proposed CNN-based comparing network in decoding SSVEPs. It suggests that the comparing network with TRCA is a promising methodology for target identification of SSVEPs and could further improve the performance of SSVEP-based BCI system.

Questionable Classification Accuracy Reported in "Designing a Sum of Squared Correlations Framework for Enhancing SSVEP-Based BCIs".

This commentary presents a replication study to verify the effectiveness of a sum of squared correlations (SSCOR)-based steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) decoding method proposed by Kumar et al.. We implemented the SSCOR-based method in accordance with their descriptions and estimated its classification accuracy using a benchmark SSVEP dataset with cross validation. Our results showed significantly lower classification accuracy compared with the ones reported in Kumar et al.'s study. We further investigated the sources of performance discrepancy by simulating data leakage between training and test datasets. The classification performance of the simulation was remarkably similar to those reported by Kumar et al.. We, therefore, question the validity of evaluation and conclusions drawn in Kumar et al.'s study.

On the Relative Contribution of Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for SSVEP-Based Bio-Signal Decoding in BCI Speller Applications.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) harnessing steady state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) manipulate the frequency and phase of visual stimuli to generate predictable oscillations in neural activity. For BCI spellers, oscillations are matched with alphanumeric characters allowing users to select target numbers and letters. Advances in BCI spellers can, in part, be accredited to subject-specific optimization, including; 1) custom electrode arrangements; 2) filter sub-band assessments; and 3) stimulus parameter tuning. Here, we apply deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) demonstrating cross-subject functionality for the classification of frequency and phase encoded SSVEP. Electroencephalogram (EEG) data are collected and classified using the same parameters across subjects. Subjects fixate forty randomly cued flickering characters ( 5 ×8 keyboard array) during concurrent wet-EEG acquisition. These data are provided by an open source SSVEP dataset. Our proposed DCNN, PodNet, achieves 86% and 77% offline accuracy of classification across-subjects for two data capture periods, respectively, 6-seconds (information transfer rate = 40 bpm) and 2-seconds (information transfer rate = 101 bpm). Subjects demonstrating sub-optimal (<70%) performance are classified to similar levels after a short subject-specific training period. PodNet outperforms filter-bank canonical correlation analysis for a low volume (3-channel) clinically feasible occipital electrode configuration. The networks defined in this study achieve functional performance for the largest number of SSVEP classes decoded via DCNN to date. Our results demonstrate PodNet achieves cross-subject, calibrationless classification and adaptability to sub-optimal subject data, and low-volume EEG electrode arrangements.

Power spectra constrained IVA for SSVEP detection

The detection of steady state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs), an evoked response to visual stimuli, has been identified as an effective solution for brain computer interface systems and as a probe for neurocognitive investigations of visually related tasks. However, since they recorded as part of the scalp-based electroencephalogram (EEG) signals their detection is challenging as they are buried amongst the normal brain signals. Blind source separation methods, such as independent vector analysis (IVA), have been shown to be capable of enhancing and improving signal detection by exploiting the diversity within individual datasets while simultaneously exploiting the complimentary information across datasets. In general, IVA is highly flexible with a general solution space; however, it is not guaranteed to converge to a meaningful minimum, by incorporating a problem specific constraint we can shrink the solution space insuring a relevant solution. In this work, we present a novel multiset data framework for EEG recordings and apply our constrained power spectra IVA (CP-IVA) to a publicly available SSVEP dataset. We compare the prediction accuracy of CP-IVA with that of an optimized processing stream developed for that dataset, as well as a canonical correlation analysis (CCA) based approach, showing that CP-IVA achieves better average performance and is more robust across the population of subjects with a higher minimum detection rate. More importantly, CP-IVA achieves this performance with minimal pre-processing and without the need to train complex classifiers.
