Lean Blowout Proximity Sensing in a Low Emission Liquid-Fueled Combustor

ABSTRACT Advanced aircraft engine combustor designs, intended for achieving low NOx emissions, necessitate lean combustion with small operating margins above the LBO boundary, posing a high risk of exhibiting lean blowout (LBO) problems. Employing active LBO controllers receiving input from LBO proximity sensors can allow for narrower margins, thereby yielding multiple performance gains. Although several previous studies investigated LBO proximity sensing, they predominantly focused on premixed gas-fueled combustors. The application of proximity sensing approaches to liquid-fueled combustor designs, relevant to aircraft engines have not received adequate attention. Therefore, this study investigates LBO proximity sensing in a low emission lean direct injection (LDI) liquid-fueled combustor design developed by NASA. The combustor operates at atmospheric pressure with preheated air. The proximity sensing is examined by analyzing both OH* and CH* chemiluminescence signals, with a focus on assessing their relative performances. The signal analysis approaches include spectral, partial extinction event (LBO precursor) detection, signal RMS, and the CH*/OH* ratio, with an emphasis on the first two methods. Both steady-state and transient operating conditions have been examined. The combustor did not exhibit large-scale flame partial extinction and re-ignition events near LBO, as commonly observed in gas-fueled combustors. However, an increase in flame unsteadiness and partial extinction events with very subtle signatures in optical signals, have been observed. Low-pass filtering has been observed to considerably enhance the precursor signatures enabling their improved detection. With a reduction in LBO margin, an increase in signal low-frequency power, RMS, and precursor event occurrence rate have been observed, which were utilized for providing LBO proximity measures. A key finding from this study is that CH* signals provide significantly superior performance compared to OH* for the proximity sensing in all the approaches, and the potential reasons are discussed.

Model Predictive Control of a Modular Multilevel Converter with Reduced Computational Burden

Recent advances in high-power applications employing voltage source converters have been primarily fuelled by the emergence of the modular multilevel converter (MMC) and its derivatives. Model predictive control (MPC) has emerged as an effective way of controlling these converters because of its high response. However, the practical implementation of MPC encounters hurdles, particularly in MMCs featuring many sub-modules per arm. This research introduces an approach termed folding model predictive control (FMPC), coupled with a pre-processing sorting algorithm, tailored for modular multilevel converters. The objective is to alleviate a significant part of the computational burden associated with the control of these converters. The FMPC framework combines multiple control objectives, encompassing AC current, DC current, circulating current, arm energy, and leg energy, within a unified cost function. Both simulation studies and real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing are conducted to verify the efficacy of the proposed FMPC. The findings underscore the FMPC’s ability to deliver fast response and robust performance under both steady-state and dynamic operating conditions. Moreover, the FMPC adeptly mitigates circulating currents, reduces total harmonic distortion (THD%), and upholds capacitor voltage stability within acceptable thresholds, even in the presence of harmonic distortions in the AC grid. The practical applicability of MMCs, notwithstanding the presence of a large number of sub-modules (SMs) per arm, is facilitated by the significant reduction in switching states and computational overhead achieved through the FMPC approach.

Flexible Energy Storage for Sustainable Load Leveling in Low-Voltage Electricity Distribution Grids with Prosumers

The sustainability of the energy sector is linked today with the diminishing of the reliance on fossil fuels and on the large-scale adoption of renewable generation. Medium- and low-voltage electricity distribution grids see the proliferation of microgrids that supply consumers able to generate electricity with local installations of PV panels. These consuming and generating entities, called prosumers, use the local generation for their own consumption needs and are exporting the surplus in the grid, modifying the typical steady state operation conditions. For mitigating this inconvenience, local storage equipment can be used, which also helps the prosumers to reduce their costs and preserve the sustainable operation of the distribution infrastructure. The literature shows that by optimally using storage in microgrids, the deterioration in quality and security of supply can be minimized in the presence of prosumers. This paper presents a study regarding local storage management in prosumer-enabled microgrids, seeking to find the optimal configuration of community (shared) storage systems that charge batteries overnight, during low consumption hours, providing load leveling opportunities and energy loss minimization. A study case performed on a real low-voltage electricity distribution network (LVEDN) shows the performance of the proposed optimization.

Soft Sensor Technology for the Determination of Mechanical Seal Friction Power Performance

Mechanical seals ensure the internal sealing of centrifugal pumps from the surrounding environment. They are one of the most critical components in a centrifugal pump. For this reason, the condition of mechanical seals should be monitored during operation. Mechanical seal friction power is an important component of mechanical losses in centrifugal pumps and is used as an indicator of wear and therefore seal condition. The soft sensor described in this paper is based on temperature measurements at the seal and can be used for determining the frictional power performance. A major factor in determining frictional power performance is the heat transfer between the mechanical seal and the medium inside the pump. For calculating the heat transfer, the stationary temperature fields in the rings of the mechanical seal are described by transmission efficiencies. The root mean squared error was determined for steady-state operating conditions to assess the quality of the soft sensor calculation. The frictional power performance can be determined by recording the temperature at the mechanical seal mating ring and the medium. The algorithm detects when the steady-state operating conditions change but does not map the dynamic changes between the stationary operating conditions.

Comparative analysis of different FeCrAl alloys in pressurized water reactors

Discussing and researching issues related to their safety is essential to guarantee the continuity of fission systems in generating energy for existing and new electrical matrices. Commercial fission reactors currently in operation have undergone a series of redesigns. One aspect much discussed in recent years is related to research about new fuels and cladding materials. Therefore, in this work, the feasibility of replacing Zircaloy-4 with FeCrAl-based alloys (C06M, C35M, C36M, Kanthal APMT) was evaluated considering these materials' physical–chemical, thermal, and neutronic properties. Moreover, thermal–hydraulic and neutronic simulations have been presented to compare the cladding behavior in a PWR core in steady state and transient operation conditions. The results showed, in a general way, that the analyzed alloys have equivalent properties from a physical–chemical and thermal point of view. Despite the similarity, the Kanthal APMT alloy presented the worst performance, and the C35M alloy showed more advantageous characteristics. Considering the similarities in the composition of the C06M, C35M, and C36M alloys, which have the same elements in their constitution, the alloy with the best thermal performance has the lowest aluminum content. Considering the neutronic behavior, the Kanthal APMT alloy, with more Cr percentile, presents the lowest neutron effective multiplication factor, keff. Axial and radial power distribution did not change significantly after the cladding replacement. Nevertheless, modifications must be made to keep the criticality during the fuel cycle burnup for all FeCrAl alloys.

Simulation of the Performance of an Electrically Turbocharged Engine Over an Urban Driving Cycle

The study aimed to estimate the energy recovery potential of a decoupled electric turbocharger and its boosting ability in a spark-ignition engine using simulation-based work. Passenger vehicle engines operate at low loads and speeds, requiring characterization and estimation of energy available for recovery under normal driving conditions. A 1-D numerical model of the engine and boosting system was developed to predict energy recovery over steady-state full-load operating conditions, part-load conditions, and actual, transient Klang Valley and Kuala Lumpur drive cycle conditions. The electric turbocharged engine consists of two motors and a battery pack, which were modeled and utilized using GT-Power engine simulation software. The study found that the electrical turbocharger system could recover 0.57 kW and 0.50 kW at 2500 rpm and 3000 rpm, respectively. Part-load studies showed that the maximum amount of electrical energy recovered at 6500 rpm was 5.25 kW. Drive cycle analysis revealed that fuel consumption was the same for both engine models due to the similar turbocharger output performance and lower back pressure caused by the recalibrated wastegate controller. This was partially mitigated by the inclusion of two electric motors. Drive cycle analysis revealed that the electric turbocharger can perform better than a conventional turbocharger when optimized.

Experimental investigation of hydrogen enriched natural gas combustion with a focus on nitrogen oxide formation on a semi-industrial scale

Combustion of hydrogen-enriched natural gas is a valuable short-term strategy for reducing CO2 emissions from high temperature industrial heating. This paper presents several experiments on combustion characteristics and the formation of nitrogen oxides. The experiments included hydrogen contents up to 100% and fuel heat inputs up to 75 kW. Water-cooled lances were used to influence the furnace temperature. The analysis includes the distribution of furnace temperatures, the composition of flue gas, the cooling capacity of the lances under steady-state operating conditions, and OH*-chemiluminescence imaging of the near burner region. The presented results demonstrate the dependence of furnace conditions and NOX formation on various factors, such as different air inlet fluxes, furnace temperature, and fuel composition, for constant heat inputs. Efficiency increased by up to 5.5% and significant changes in flame shaped along with a maximum increase in NOX emissions when comparing natural gas to hydrogen was measured at 167%.

Overview of Fourth Generation Reactors Studied at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil)

This paper presents the results of the studies about the Fourth Generation Reactors developed at DENU-UFMG, such as the Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR), Molten Salt Breeder Reactor (MSBR), Sodium Fast Reactor (SFR) and Gas-cooled Fast Reactor (GFR). These studies evaluate neutronic parameters of the nuclear system at steady state and during the burnup using computer models developed at DENU-UFMG using SCALE 6.0 (KENO-VI/ORIGENS), MCNPX 2.6.0 and MCNP5. The results show that the adopted methodologies confirm the capabilities of the codes to simulate specific situations in steady state or transient operating conditions.

Augmented Finite Control Set MPC Design Technique for Wide Speed Range Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Drives

The effective motion control task is highly influencing the final drive performance in wide-range motor drives applications such as electric vehicles (EVs), washing machines, compressors, elevators and lathe machines. Recently, permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive has been widely employed in these applications to achieve desired performances such as high efficiency, high torque requirements with minimum size “occupancy”. The PMSM drive features combining with these modern drive applications are highly nonlinear and the desired operation requirements demand high-performance control schemes with fast system response and robustness features. Linear control schemes are usually implemented to drive the PMSM that entail trade-offs between drive performance and simplicity in control implementation. Therefore, this paper presents the nonlinear control technique based on augmented finite control set (AFCS) model predictive control (MPC) scheme (AFCS-MPC). The proposed AFCS-MPC scheme enhances the standard MPC design by augmenting the nonlinear characteristics of the PMSM drive to achieve wide speed range drive performance under both steady-state and dynamic operating conditions. Comparative performance studies have been conducted and presented to confirm the efficacy of the proposed scheme.

Thermal Simulation of Burned Nuclear Fuel Elements

An adjustable description of the temperature distribution in the nuclear fuel elements is evaluated to the prediction of the lifetime behavior of these components. The impact of the fuel and coolant temperature on the neutron reaction rates provides an incentive for accurate modelling of the temperature behavior under transient as well as steady-state operating conditions. This paper is to focus on the steady-state temperature field in the fuel elements. Many of the principles applied are also useful for describing the temperature field in the structure component.

Resilience of aerobic sludge biomass under chlorpyrifos stress and its recovery potential

Non-agricultural sources of pesticides in urban areas are responsible for their presence in domestic wastewater. Therefore, pesticides are typically found in sewage treatment plants in developed and developing countries as micro-pollutant. The presence of pesticides in the wastewater can impart stress on the aerobic sludge biomass and disrupt the functioning of the plant. However, there exists a knowledge gap regarding the resilience of aerobic sludge biomass towards stress due to the presence of pesticides in the wastewater. This study investigated the impact of chlorpyrifos (CPS) – a widely used pesticide, on sludge biomass and explored its recovery capability when CPS is discontinued in the influent. Four duplicate reactors were operated with different CPS concentrations ranging from 50 to 200 mg/L. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal for reactors has ranged within 18–73 % at the steady state of the stressed phase, whereas COD removal for the control reactor was 91 %. CPS stress slightly inhibited filamentous biomass growth. Biomass activity and cell viability have decreased significantly, whereas biochemical contents have varied slightly under CPS stress. The activities of the enzymes dehydrogenase and urease were significantly inhibited when compared to catalase and protease. Amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis reflected changes in the microbial community. The discontinuation of CPS has allowed aerobic sludge biomass to recover in its organic degradation capability (COD removal of more than 88 % at steady-state conditions of recovery phase operation), biomass growth, and cell viability. In addition, enzyme activities have retrieved to their original levels, and 78–93 % similarity of microbial community structure has been displayed between CPS-exposed and control reactor biomasses. Overall, the present study has indicated the orderly changes in the quality of aerobic sludge biomass under CPS stress through physico-chemical and biological characteristics. The study also has highlighted the self-recovery of sludge biomass characteristics stressed with different concentrations of CPS.

AC/DC Hybrid Power System Damping Control Based on Estimated Model Predictive Control Considering the Real-Time LCC-HVDC Stability

High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) can quickly vary its power to stabilize an AC power system when the latter is subject to a disturbance. Typically, linear control is used to design that control strategy. However, due to the uncertainties of the faults and the system model, it is necessary to estimate the linear model of the post-fault power system using real-time measurements. This leads to two main problems: Firstly, after the fault, the HVDC will quickly evolve to steady-state operating conditions and, therefore, result in an unobservable control matrix. Secondly, the HVDC power should not exceed its stable range, which is limited by the post-fault system. To address the above issues, the main novelties are as follows: First, this paper proposes a novel system identification method to handle that case when there is no control input excitation. Second, this paper presents an AC/DC hybrid power system control strategy that fully considers the real-time stability constraints of the HVDC. More specifically, this paper proposes to estimate the system matrix and the control matrix separately. Based on the linearized model of the AC/DC hybrid system, the control matrix is calculated using the sensitivities of the active powers of the generators with respect to those of the HVDC. Then, the system matrix is estimated in real-time using measures of the power angle and frequency. Finally, by processing the local voltage and current measurements, the associated Thevenin equivalent parameters on the system side of the HVDC connecting point are estimated in real-time and the upper bound of the DC power is determined. According to the linearized model and the HVDC power constraints, a control strategy is proposed using the model predictive control method. Simulation results reveal the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

Thermal-hydraulic and load following performance analysis of a heat pipe cooled reactor

Heat pipe cooled reactors have gained attention as a potential solution for nuclear power generation in space and deep sea applications because of their simple design, scalability, safety and reliability. However, under complex operating conditions, a control strategy for variable load operation is necessary. This paper presents a two-dimensional transient characteristics analysis program for a heat pipe cooled reactor and proposes a variable load control strategy using the recuperator bypass (CSURB). The program was verified against previous studies, and steady-state and step-load operating conditions were calculated. For normal operating condition, the predicted temperature distribution with constant heat pipe temperature boundary conditions agrees well with the literature, with a maximum temperature difference of 0.4 K. With the implementation of the control strategy using the recuperator bypass (CSURB) proposed in this paper, it becomes feasible to achieve variable load operation and return the system to a steady state solely through the self-regulation of the reactor, without the need to operate the control drum. The average temperature difference of the fuel does not exceed 1 % at the four power levels of 70 %,80 %, 90 % and 100 % Full power. The output power of the turbine can match the load change process, and the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet of the turbine increases as the power decreases.

Analysis of calculation of fuel rods for strength under transient and steady-state operating conditions

The operating conditions are analyzed, mechanical characteristics are calculated pertaining to the 4-year cycle fuel rods of VVER-1000. The fuel rod strength characteristics are considered as applied to steady-state and transient conditions of reactor operation.The analysis of the per – fuel rod calculations covering a part of fuel assemblies in the VVER-1000 core under steady-state and several transient operating conditions allows one to assess the mechanical state of fuel claddings, the fulfillment of the design criteria of acceptance and to gain the understanding of the effect produced by the reactor control methods on the strength characteristics.Given are the results of computer modelling the stress-strained condition of present-day fuel rod claddings upon the four-year operation within the VVER-1000 core both under steady-state and transient conditions.The calculations involved transients with the application of different control systems, namely, only the boric system and its combination with mechanical organs of control. The calculations evidence that in terms of the strength criteria these algorithms ensure the tolerable local distortions of power rating fields.

CFD-based bioreactor model with proportional-integral-derivative controller functionality for dissolved oxygen and pH.

A physics-based model for predicting cell culture fluid properties inside a stirred tank bioreactor with embedded PID controller logic is presented. The model evokes a time-accurate solution to the fluid velocity field and overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient, as well as the ongoing effects of interfacial mass transfer, species mixing, and aqueous chemical reactions. The modeled system also includes a direct coupling between process variables and system control variables via embedded controller logic. Satisfactory agreement is realized between the model prediction and measured bioreactor data in terms of the steady-state operating conditions and the response to setpoint changes. Simulation runtimes are suitable for industrial research and design timescales.

Research on the Hydraulic Characteristics of 1000 MW Francis Runner: Influence of Radial Installation Deviations

This paper focuses on a 1000 MW Francis turbine and conducts a numerical analysis of the entire flow passage using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) under steady-state conditions. Building upon prior research, we further investigate the impact of an uneven gap distribution caused by radial co-directional installation deviations of 0.1 mm, 0.3 mm, 0.5 mm, 1.5 mm, and 2.5 mm on the pressures and radial forces at various locations of the turbine, including the upper crown chamber, the vaneless zone, and the bottom ring chamber, all under steady-state rated operating conditions. By examining the maximum and minimum pressure values under different conditions, we determined that different pressure reading methods should be applied to distinct surfaces. Additionally, we derived the patterns illustrating how different components are affected by radial installation deviations. The significance of this study lies in its comprehensive exploration of the influence of radial installation deviations on the performance of a Francis turbine, particularly under steady-state rated conditions. Through numerical analysis, we elucidated the specific effects of various deviation magnitudes on the pressures and radial forces at different turbine locations. These findings provide valuable insights for the optimization of turbine design and operation. The novelty of this work stems from its in-depth investigation of radial co-directional installation deviations and the extensive results obtained through numerical simulations. These results hold significant implications for improving turbine performance and reliability, surpassing previous efforts in the literature.

Uncertainty analysis of heat transfer of TMSR-SF0 simulator

The TMSR-SF0 simulator is an integral effect thermal-hydraulic experimental system for the development of thorium molten salt reactor (TMSR) program in China. The simulator has two heat transport loops with liquid FLiNaK. In literature, the 95% level confidence uncertainties of the thermophysical properties of FLiNaK are recommended, and the uncertainties of density, heat capacity, thermal conductivity and viscosity are ±2%, ±10, ±10% and ±10% respectively. In order to investigate the effects of thermophysical properties uncertainties on the molten salt heat transport system, the uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of the heat transfer characteristics of the simulator system are carried out on a RELAP5 model. The uncertainties of thermophysical properties are incorporated in simulation model and the Monte Carlo sampling method is used to propagate the input uncertainties through the model. The simulation results indicate that the uncertainty propagated to core outlet temperature is about ±10°C with a confidence level of 95% in a steady-state operation condition. The result should be noted in the design, operation and code validation of molten salt reactor. In addition, more experimental data is necessary for quantifying the uncertainty of thermophysical properties of molten salts.

Steady-state modelling of PEM fuel cell for evaluation of performance.

The influence of operating variables like temperature, pressure, humidity etc. needs to be reduced to optimize the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). A model that can accurately simulate the real operating conditions of a fuel cell can be used to optimize its performance. This paper develops and simulates a mathematical model for PEMFC in steady-state operating conditions. A steady state model is built in MATLAB-Simulink environment. The effects of different operating variables on the performance of the PEMFC have been studied. The parameters include operating temperature and reactant flow pressure. The results in the form of polarization curve, efficiency, power and current density have been analysed to compare the fuel cell behaviours. The results show good conformity with other existing models.

Morphology and nanostructure of soot particles from diesel engine under transient and steady-state operating conditions with a microalgae fuel component, dioctyl phthalate biofuel

In order to adhere to strict emissions standards, it is necessary to reduce diesel particulate emissions under real driving conditions. This can be achieved by reducing the production of soot particles and optimising the combustion process within the combustion chamber. This investigation examines the impact of engine operating conditions (transient and steady-state) on the characterisation of the soot particles. Soot samples from a common rail direct injection (CRDI), turbocharged six-cylinder diesel engine without any aftertreatment devices were collected on TEM grids. This investigation utilised both pure diesel and diesel-dioctyl phthalate (DOP) blends (D90DOP10 and D80DOP20). To correlate the soot characterisation results, diesel particulate emissions were also measured using a fast particle analyser (DMS500). The results indicate that emissions from transient cycles are higher in comparison to steady-state engine operation. Smaller primary particle diameter with a compact structure were observed for transient cycles when compared to steady-state operating conditions. Parameters such as number of primary particles within a single aggregate, radius of gyration, and soot aggregate area were also studied. Nanostructure analysis reveals that the soot particles from transient cycles could have lower oxidation reactivity and longer fringes with less curvature and interplanar spacing.
