Masked speech recognition by 6–13-year-olds with early-childhood otitis media: effects of acoustic condition and otologic history

Objective To investigate speech recognition in school-age children with early-childhood otitis media (OM) in conditions with noise or speech maskers with or without interaural differences. To also investigate the effects of three otologic history factors. Design Using headphone presentation, speech recognition thresholds (SRTs) were measured with simple sentences. As maskers, stationary speech-shaped noise (SSN) or two-talker running speech (TTS) were used. The stimuli were presented in a monaural and binaural condition (SSN) or a co-located and spatially separated condition (TTS). Based on the available medical records, overall OM duration, OM onset age, and time since the last OM episode were estimated. Study sample 6–13-year-olds with a history of recurrent OM (N = 42) or without any ear diseases (N = 20) with normal tympanograms and audiograms at the time of testing. Results Mixed-model regression analyses that controlled for age showed poorer SRTs for the OM group (Δ-value = 0.84 dB, p = 0.009). These appeared driven by the spatially separated, binaural, and monaural conditions. The OM group showed large inter-individual differences, which were unrelated to the otologic history factors. Conclusions Early-childhood OM can affect speech recognition in different acoustic conditions. The effects of the otologic history warrant further investigation.

Does experience with hearing aid amplification influence electrophysiological measures of speech comprehension?

Objective To explore if experience with hearing aid (HA) amplification affects speech-evoked cortical potentials reflecting comprehension abilities. Design N400 and late positive complex (LPC) responses as well as behavioural response times to congruent and incongruent digit triplets were measured. The digits were presented against stationary speech-shaped noise 10 dB above individually measured speech recognition thresholds. Stimulus presentation was either acoustic (digits 1-3) or first visual (digits 1-2) and then acoustic (digit 3). Study sample Three groups of older participants (N = 3 × 15) with (1) pure-tone average hearing thresholds <25 dB HL from 500-4000 Hz, (2) mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) but no prior HA experience, and (3) mild-to-moderate SNHL and >2 years of HA experience. Groups 2-3 were fitted with test devices in accordance with clinical gain targets. Results No group differences were found in the electrophysiological data. N400 amplitudes were larger and LPC latencies shorter with acoustic presentation. For group 1, behavioural response times were shorter with visual-then-acoustic presentation. Conclusion When speech audibility is ensured, comprehension-related electrophysiological responses appear intact in individuals with mild-to-moderate SNHL, regardless of prior experience with amplified sound. Further research into the effects of audibility versus acclimatisation-related neurophysiological changes is warranted.

Effects of noise presence and noise position on interpersonal distance in a triadic conversation.

People usually move in different ways during conversations but little is known whether movement behavior reflects difficulties that some people experience in communication in terms of listening and speaking. Here, we investigate movement behavior of standing participants in triadic conversations in noise with different spatial properties. In the initial analysis, we test how presence and position of noise affects interpersonal distance. The task of the interlocutors was to hold a free conversation in controlled acoustic conditions with realistic reverberation and visual scene of an underground station that was rendered in real-time in the Simulated Open Field Environment while the participants were monitored with motion tracking equipment and their voices were recorded. Two groups of people took part in the study. Different noise conditions involved presence of stationary speech-shaped noise at 70 dB SPL presented from one of four possible directions (Front, Right, Rear, Left), or from all directions simultaneously (F+R+R+L), or there was no noise (Quiet). The results show that interpersonal distance decreased when the noise was present, which confirmed previous results. Further, the preliminary analysis shows a relatively small effect of noise position on the interpersonal distance.

Comparing Clinically Applicable Behavioral and Electrophysiological Measures of Speech Detection, Discrimination, and Comprehension.

Effective communication requires good speech perception abilities. Speech perception can be assessed with behavioral and electrophysiological methods. Relating these two types of measures to each other can provide a basis for new clinical tests. In audiological practice, speech detection and discrimination are routinely assessed, whereas comprehension-related aspects are ignored. The current study compared behavioral and electrophysiological measures of speech detection, discrimination, and comprehension. Thirty young normal-hearing native Danish speakers participated. All measurements were carried out with digits and stationary speech-shaped noise as the stimuli. The behavioral measures included speech detection thresholds (SDTs), speech recognition thresholds (SRTs), and speech comprehension scores (i.e., response times). For the electrophysiological measures, multichannel electroencephalography (EEG) recordings were performed. N100 and P300 responses were evoked using an active auditory oddball paradigm. N400 and Late Positive Complex (LPC) responses were evoked using a paradigm based on congruent and incongruent digit triplets, with the digits presented either all acoustically or first visually (digits 1-2) and then acoustically (digit 3). While no correlations between the SDTs and SRTs and the N100 and P300 responses were found, the response times were correlated with the EEG responses to the congruent and incongruent triplets. Furthermore, significant differences between the response times (but not EEG responses) obtained with auditory and visual-then-auditory stimulus presentation were observed. This pattern of results could reflect a faster recall mechanism when the first two digits are presented visually rather than acoustically. The visual-then-auditory condition may facilitate the assessment of comprehension-related processes in hard-of-hearing individuals.

Assessing and Modeling Spatial Release From Listening Effort in Listeners With Normal Hearing: Reference Ranges and Effects of Noise Direction and Age.

Listening to speech in noisy environments is challenging and effortful. Factors like the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the spatial separation between target speech and noise interferer(s), and possibly also the listener's age might influence perceived listening effort (LE). This study measured and modeled the effect of the spatial separation of target speech and interfering stationary speech-shaped noise on the perceived LE and its relation to the age of the listeners. Reference ranges for the relationship between subjectively perceived LE and SNR for different noise azimuths were established. For this purpose, 70 listeners with normal hearing and from three age groups rated the perceived LE using the Adaptive Categorical Listening Effort Scaling method (ACALES, Krueger et al., 2017a) with speech from the front and noise from 0°, 90°, 135°, or 180° azimuth. Based on these data, the spatial release from listening effort (SRLE) was calculated. The noise azimuth had a strong effect on SRLE, with the highest release for 135°. The binaural speech intelligibility model (BSIM2020, Hauth et al., 2020) predicted SRLE very well at negative SNRs, but overestimated for positive SNRs. No significant effect of age was found on the respective subjective ratings. Therefore, the reference ranges were determined independently of age. These reference ranges can be used for the classification of LE measurements. However, when the increase of the perceived LE with SNR was analyzed, a significant age difference was found between the listeners of the youngest and oldest group when considering the upper range of the LE function.

Masked Speech Recognition by Normal-Hearing 6-13-Year-Olds in Conditions With and Without Interaural Difference Cues.

Using the Danish 'børneDAT' corpus, the current study aimed to (1) collect normative masked speech recognition data for 6-13-year-olds in conditions with and without interaural difference cues, (2) evaluate the test-retest reliability of these measurements, and (3) compare two widely used measures of binaural/spatial benefit in terms of the obtained scores. Seventy-four children and 17 young adults with normal hearing participated. Using headphone presentation, speech recognition thresholds (SRTs) were measured twice at two separate visits in four conditions. In the first two conditions, børneDAT sentences were presented in diotic stationary speech-shaped noise, with the sentences either interaurally in-phase ('N0S0') or interaurally out-of-phase ('N0S180'). In the other two conditions, børneDAT sentences were simulated to come from 0° azimuth and two running speech maskers from either 0° azimuth ('co-located') or ±90° azimuth ('spatially separated'). In relative terms, the children achieved lower SRTs in stationary noise than in competing speech, whereas the adults showed the opposite pattern. 12-13-year-old children achieved adult-like performance in all but the co-located condition. Younger children showed generally immature speech recognition abilities. Test-retest reliability was highest for the SRTs in stationary noise and lowest for the spatial benefit scores. Mean benefit was comparable for the two measures and participant groups, and the two sets of scores were not correlated with each other. Developmental effects were most pronounced in the conditions with interaural difference cues. In conclusion, reference data for the børneDAT corpus obtained under different acoustic conditions are available that can guide future research and potential clinical applications.

Influence of Three Auditory Profiles on Aided Speech Perception in Different Noise Scenarios.

Hearing aid (HA) users differ greatly in their speech-in-noise (SIN) outcomes. This could be because the degree to which current HA fittings can address individual listening needs differs across users and listening situations. In two earlier studies, an auditory test battery and a data-driven method were developed for classifying HA candidates into four distinct auditory profiles differing in audiometric hearing loss and suprathreshold hearing abilities. This study explored aided SIN outcome for three of these profiles in different noise scenarios. Thirty-one older habitual HA users and six young normal-hearing listeners participated. Two SIN tasks were administered: a speech recognition task and a “just follow conversation” task requiring the participants to self-adjust the target-speech level. Three noise conditions were tested: stationary speech-shaped noise, speech-shaped babble noise, and speech-shaped babble noise with competing dialogues. Each HA user was fitted with three HAs from different manufacturers using their recommended procedures. Real-ear measurements were performed to document the final gain settings. The results showed that HA users with mild hearing deficits performed better than HA users with pronounced hearing deficits on the speech recognition task but not the just follow conversation task. Moreover, participants with pronounced hearing deficits obtained different SIN outcomes with the tested HAs, which appeared to be related to differences in HA gain. Overall, these findings imply that current proprietary fitting strategies are limited in their ability to ensure good SIN outcomes, especially for users with pronounced hearing deficits, for whom the choice of device seems most consequential.

Precompensating for spread of excitation in a cochlear implant coding strategy

Cochlear implant users’ limited ability to understand speech in noisy environments has been linked to the poor spatial resolution and the high degree of spectral smearing associated with the spread of neural excitation. A sound coding algorithm that aims to improve the spectro-temporal representation of the sound signal at the implanted ear by precompensating the electrical stimulation for the spread of excitation is presented in this study. The spread precompensation algorithm was integrated into the standard clinical advanced combination encoder (ACE) strategy and the resulting strategy was called SPACE. SPACE was evaluated acutely with a group of six implant users and was compared to their daily used ACE strategy in terms of preference rating and speech recognition in four-talker babble and stationary speech-shaped noise. While no significant differences in preference rating were observed, speech recognition in four-talker babble was improved by SPACE processing. Analysis of the group results revealed a significant improvement in mean speech reception threshold (SRT) over the ACE strategy of 1.4 dB in four-talker babble, whereas the difference of 0.9 dB in stationary noise did not reach statistical significance. Assessment of individual differences showed that four out of six listeners obtained significant SRT improvements with SPACE and that no subject scored significantly worse compared to ACE. The results suggest that the proposed sound coding strategy has the potential to improve speech perception for cochlear implant users in challenging listening situations.

A New Approach for Noise Suppression in Cochlear Implants: A Single-Channel Noise Reduction Algorithm.

The cochlea “translates” the in-air vibrational acoustic “language” into the spikes of neural “language” that are then transmitted to the brain for auditory understanding and/or perception. During this intracochlear “translation” process, high resolution in time–frequency–intensity domains guarantees the high quality of the input neural information for the brain, which is vital for our outstanding hearing abilities. However, cochlear implants (CIs) have coarse artificial coding and interfaces, and CI users experience more challenges in common acoustic environments than their normal-hearing (NH) peers. Noise from sound sources that a listener has no interest in may be neglected by NH listeners, but they may distract a CI user. We discuss the CI noise-suppression techniques and introduce noise management for a new implant system. The monaural signal-to-noise ratio estimation-based noise suppression algorithm “eVoice,” which is incorporated in the processors of Nurotron® EnduroTM, was evaluated in two speech perception experiments. The results show that speech intelligibility in stationary speech-shaped noise can be significantly improved with eVoice. Similar results have been observed in other CI devices with single-channel noise reduction techniques. Specifically, the mean speech reception threshold decrease in the present study was 2.2 dB. The Nurotron society already has more than 10,000 users, and eVoice is a start for noise management in the new system. Future steps on non-stationary-noise suppression, spatial-source separation, bilateral hearing, microphone configuration, and environment specification are warranted. The existing evidence, including our research, suggests that noise-suppression techniques should be applied in CI systems. The artificial hearing of CI listeners requires more advanced signal processing techniques to reduce brain effort and increase intelligibility in noisy settings.

A Danish Sentence Corpus for Assessing Speech Recognition in Noise in School-Age Children.

For the audiological assessment of the speech-in-noise abilities of children with normal or impaired hearing, appropriate test materials are required. However, in Denmark, no standardized materials exist. The purpose of this study was to develop a Danish sentence corpus suitable for testing school-age children. Based on the 600 validated test sentences from the Danish DAT (Dagmar, Asta, or Tine) corpus, 11 test lists comprising 20 sentences each were carefully constructed. These lists were evaluated in terms of their perceptual similarity and reliability with a group of 20 typically developing, normal-hearing children aged 6 to 12 years. Using stationary speech-shaped noise and diotic stimulus presentation, speech recognition thresholds (SRTs) were measured twice per list and participant at two separate visits. The analyses showed that six test lists were perceptually equivalent. These lists are characterized by a grand average SRT of −2.6 dB signal-to-noise ratio, a test–retest improvement of 0.6 dB, and a within-subject standard deviation of 1.1 dB signal-to-noise ratio. The other lists were characterized by slightly higher SRTs, slightly larger training effects, and slightly larger measurement uncertainty, but were otherwise also usable. Overall, it is therefore concluded that the developed corpus is suited for assessing speech recognition in noise in Danish 6- to 12-year olds. The corpus is publicly available.

Relationship Between Working Memory and Speech-in-Noise Recognition in Young and Older Adult Listeners With Age-Appropriate Hearing.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between working memory (WM) capacity and speech recognition in noise in both a group of young adults and a group of older adults. Method Thirty-three older adults with a mean age of 71.0 (range: 60.4-82.7) years and 27 young adults with a mean age of 21.7 (range: 19.1-25.0) years participated in the study. All participants had age-appropriate hearing and no history of central nervous system dysfunction. WM capacity was measured using the van den Noort version of the Reading Span Test, and recognition of sentences in the presence of a stationary speech-shaped noise was measured as the speech reception threshold for 50% correct identification by using the Leuven Intelligibility Sentence Test. Results The older adults had significantly worse WM capacity scores, t(58) = 8.266, p < .001, and significantly more difficulty understanding sentences in noise than the younger adults, t(58) = -6.068, p < .001. In the group of older adults, a correlation was found (r = -.488, n = 33, p = .004) between the results of the WM capacity test (Reading Span Test) and the results of the speech-recognition-in-noise test (Leuven Intelligibility Sentence Test), meaning that the higher the WM performance was, the better was the speech recognition in noise. This correlation cannot be found in young normal-hearing listeners. Conclusions This study shows deleterious effects of age on both WM capacity and speech recognition in noise. Interestingly, only in the group of older adults was a significant relation found between WM capacity and speech recognition in noise. The current results caution against the assumption that WM necessarily supports speech-in-noise identification independently of the age and hearing status of the listener.

Effect of Audibility and Suprathreshold Deficits on Speech Recognition for Listeners With Unilateral Hearing Loss.

Objectives:We examined the influence of impaired processing (audibility and suprathreshold processes) on speech recognition in cases of sensorineural hearing loss. The influence of differences in central, or top-down, processing was reduced by comparing the performance of both ears in participants with a unilateral hearing loss (UHL). We examined the influence of reduced audibility and suprathreshold deficits on speech recognition in quiet and in noise.Design:We measured speech recognition in quiet and stationary speech-shaped noise with consonant–vowel–consonant words and digital triplets in groups of adults with UHL (n = 19), normal hearing (n = 15), and bilateral hearing loss (n = 9). By comparing the scores of the unaffected ear (UHL+) and the affected ear (UHL−) in the UHL group, we were able to isolate the influence of peripheral hearing loss from individual top-down factors such as cognition, linguistic skills, age, and sex.Results:Audibility is a very strong predictor for speech recognition in quiet. Audibility has a less pronounced influence on speech recognition in noise. We found that, for the current sample of listeners, more speech information is required for UHL− than for UHL+ to achieve the same performance. For digit triplets at 80 dBA, the speech recognition threshold in noise (SRT) for UHL− is on average 5.2 dB signal to noise ratio (SNR) poorer than UHL+. Analysis using the speech intelligibility index (SII) indicates that on average 2.1 dB SNR of this decrease can be attributed to suprathreshold deficits and 3.1 dB SNR to audibility. Furthermore, scores for speech recognition in quiet and in noise for UHL+ are comparable to those of normal-hearing listeners.Conclusions:Our data showed that suprathreshold deficits in addition to audibility play a considerable role in speech recognition in noise even at intensities well above hearing threshold.

Benefit of binaural listening as revealed by speech intelligibility and listening effort.

In contrast to the well-known benefits for speech intelligibility, the advantage afforded by binaural stimulus presentation for reducing listening effort has not been thoroughly examined. This study investigated spatial release of listening effort and its relation to binaural speech intelligibility in listeners with normal hearing. Psychometric functions for speech intelligibility of a frontal target talker masked by a stationary speech-shaped noise were estimated for several different noise azimuths, different degrees of reverberation, and by maintaining only interaural level or time differences. For each of these conditions, listening effort was measured using a categorical scaling procedure. The results revealed that listening effort was significantly reduced when target and masker were spatially separated in anechoic conditions. This effect extended well into the range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) in which speech intelligibility was at ceiling, and disappeared only at the highest SNRs. In reverberant conditions, spatial release from listening effort was observed for high, but not low, direct-to-reverberant ratios. The findings suggest that listening effort assessment can be a useful method for revealing the benefits of spatial separation of sources under realistic listening conditions comprising favorable SNRs and low reverberation, which typically are not apparent by other means.

Speech Understanding With Various Maskers in Cochlear-Implant and Simulated Cochlear-Implant Hearing: Effects of Spectral Resolution and Implications for Masking Release.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between psychophysical spectral resolution and sentence reception in various types of interfering backgrounds for listeners with cochlear implants and normal-hearing subjects listening to vocoded speech. Spectral resolution was measured with a spectral modulation detection (SMD) task. For speech testing, maskers included stationary speech-shaped noise (SSN), four-talker babble, multitone noise, and a competing talker. To explore the possible trade-offs between spectral resolution and susceptibility to different types of maskers, the degree of simulated current spread was varied within the vocoder group, achieving a range of performance for SMD and speech tasks. Greater simulated current spread was detrimental to both spectral resolution and speech recognition, suggesting that interventions that decrease current spread may improve performance for both tasks. Better SMD sensitivity was significantly correlated with improved sentence reception. In addition, differences in sentence reception across the four maskers were significantly associated with SMD across the combined group of cochlear-implant and vocoder subjects. Masking release (MR) was quantified as the signal-to-noise ratio difference in speech reception threshold between the SSN and competing talker. Several individual cochlear-implant subjects demonstrated substantial MR, in contrast to previous studies, and the degree of MR increased with better SMD thresholds across subjects. The results of this study suggest that alternative masker types, particularly competing talkers, are more sensitive than stationary SSN to differences in spectral resolution in the cochlear-implant population.

Modeling Sluggishness in Binaural Unmasking of Speech for Maskers With Time-Varying Interaural Phase Differences.

In studies investigating binaural processing in human listeners, relatively long and task-dependent time constants of a binaural window ranging from 10 ms to 250 ms have been observed. Such time constants are often thought to reflect “binaural sluggishness.” In this study, the effect of binaural sluggishness on binaural unmasking of speech in stationary speech-shaped noise is investigated in 10 listeners with normal hearing. In order to design a masking signal with temporally varying binaural cues, the interaural phase difference of the noise was modulated sinusoidally with frequencies ranging from 0.25 Hz to 64 Hz. The lowest, that is the best, speech reception thresholds (SRTs) were observed for the lowest modulation frequency. SRTs increased with increasing modulation frequency up to 4 Hz. For higher modulation frequencies, SRTs remained constant in the range of 1 dB to 1.5 dB below the SRT determined in the diotic situation. The outcome of the experiment was simulated using a short-term binaural speech intelligibility model, which combines an equalization–cancellation (EC) model with the speech intelligibility index. This model segments the incoming signal into 23.2-ms time frames in order to predict release from masking in modulated noises. In order to predict the results from this study, the model required a further time constant applied to the EC mechanism representing binaural sluggishness. The best agreement with perceptual data was achieved using a temporal window of 200 ms in the EC mechanism.

Relation between acoustic-phonetic properties and speech intelligibility in noise obtained with bilingual talkers

An objective, language-independent way of predicting observed differences in speech intelligibility in noise across talkers based on their acoustic-phonetic properties was pursued by exploiting speech intelligibility data in stationary speech-shaped noise uttered by bilingual talkers and comparing inter-individual as well as intra-individual speech feature variations across languages. Matrix sentence materials were used that were uttered by bilingual talkers of German/Spanish and of German/Russian and by the respective original matrix test talkers. Various acoustic-phonetic parameters discussed in the literature as being related to speech intelligibility were determined for each talker. Vowel space area, between-vowel category dispersion, and energy in the mid-frequency region represented by the speech intelligibility index were found to be language-independent acoustic-phonetic properties most strongly related to speech intelligibility at least for German, Russian and Spanish. Generally larger inter-individual variation within languages than intra-individual variation across languages was found. Hence, objective phonetic criteria like vowel space area may be used in the future to objectively assess the potential of a talker to be easily understood in a noisy background. One reason of the generally poorer intelligibility performance of Spanish compared to German or Russian may lie in the usage of considerably smaller vowel space areas.

Speech onset enhancement improves intelligibility in adverse listening conditions for cochlear implant users

Speech perception by cochlear implant (CI) users can be very good in quiet but their speech intelligibility (SI) performance decreases in noisy environments. Because recent studies have shown that transient parts of the speech envelope are most important for SI in normal-hearing (NH) listeners, the enhanced envelope (EE) strategy was developed to emphasize onset cues of the speech envelope in the CI signal processing chain. The influence of enhancement of the onsets of the speech envelope on SI was investigated with CI users for speech in stationary speech-shaped noise (SSN) and with an interfering talker. All CI users showed an immediate benefit when a priori knowledge was used for the onset enhancement. A SI improvement was obtained at signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) below 6 dB, corresponding to a speech reception threshold (SRT) improvement of 2.1 dB. Furthermore, stop consonant reception was improved with the EE strategy in quiet and in SSN at 6 dB SNR. For speech in speech, the SRT improvements were 2.1 dB and 1 dB when the onsets of the target speaker with a priori knowledge of the signal components or of the mixture of the target and the interfering speaker were enhanced, respectively. The latter demonstrates that a small benefit can be obtained without a priori knowledge.

Binaural Glimpses at the Cocktail Party?

Humans often have to focus on a single target sound while ignoring competing maskers in everyday situations. In such conditions, speech intelligibility (SI) is improved when a target speaker is spatially separated from a masker (spatial release from making, SRM) compared to situations where both are co-located. Such asymmetric spatial configurations lead to a 'better-ear effect' with improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at one ear. However, maskers often surround the listener leading to more symmetric configurations where better-ear effects are absent in a long-term, wideband sense. Nevertheless, better-ear glimpses distributed across time and frequency persist and were suggested to account for SRM (Brungart and Iyer 2012). Here, speech reception was assessed using symmetric masker configurations while varying the spatio-temporal distribution of potential better-ear glimpses. Listeners were presented with a frontal target and eight single-talker maskers in four different symmetrical spatial configurations. Compared to the reference condition with co-located target and maskers, an SRM of up to 6dB was observed. The SRM persisted when the frequency range of the maskers above or below 1500Hz was replaced with stationary speech-shaped noise. Comparison to a recent short-time binaural SI model showed that better-ear glimpses can account for half the observed SRM, while binaural interaction utilizing phase differences is required to explain the other half.

Correlations Between Pitch and Phoneme Perception in Cochlear Implant Users and Their Normal Hearing Peers.

This study examined correlations between pitch and phoneme perception for nine cochlear implant users and nine normal hearing listeners. Pure tone frequency discrimination thresholds were measured for frequencies of 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz. Complex tone fundamental frequency (F0) discrimination thresholds were measured for F0s of 110, 220, and 440 Hz. The effects of amplitude and frequency roving were measured under the rationale that individuals who are robust to such perturbations would perform better on phoneme perception measures. Phoneme identification was measured using consonant and vowel materials in quiet, in stationary speech-shaped noise (SSN), in spectrally notched SSN, and in temporally gated SSN. Cochlear implant pure tone frequency discrimination thresholds ranged between 1.5 and 9.9 %, while cochlear implant complex tone F0 discrimination thresholds ranged between 2.6 and 28.5 %. On average, cochlear implant users had 5.3 dB of masking release for consonants and 8.4 dB of masking release for vowels when measured in temporally gated SSN compared to stationary SSN. Correlations with phoneme identification measures were generally higher for complex tone discrimination measures than for pure tone discrimination measures. Correlations with phoneme identification measures were also generally higher for pitch perception measures that included amplitude and frequency roving. The strongest correlations were observed for measures of complex tone F0 discrimination with phoneme identification in temporally gated SSN. The results of this study suggest that musical training or signal processing strategies that improve F0 discrimination should improve consonant identification in fluctuating noise.
