Chiral Memory in Dynamic Transformation from Porous Organic Cages to Covalent Organic Frameworks for Enantiorecognition Analysis.

The preservation of chirality during a transformation process, known as the "chiral memory" effect, has garnered significant attention across multiple research disciplines. Here, we first report the retention of the original chiral structure during dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC)-induced structural transformation from porous organic cages into covalent organic frameworks (COFs). A total of six two-dimensional chiral COFs constructed by entirely achiral building blocks were obtained through the DCC-induced substitution of chiral linkers in a homochiral cage (CC3-R or -S) using achiral amine monomers. Homochirality of these COFs resulted from the construction of 3-fold-symmetric benzene-1,3,5-methanimine cores with a propeller-like configuration of one single-handedness throughout the cage-to-COF transformation. The obtained chiral COFs can be further utilized as fluorescence sensors or chiral stationary phases for gas chromatography with high enantioselectivity. The present study thus highlighted the great potential to expand the scope of functional chiral materials via DCC-induced crystal-to-crystal transformation with the chiral memory effect.

High-resolution performance of pillar[6]arene functionalized with imidazolium ionic liquids for gas chromatography

Pillar[n]arenes (P[n]A, n = 5–10) have attracted much attention because of their highly symmetric pillar-shaped architecture with π-electron rich cavity. Nevertheless, the use of ionic liquid functionalized P[n]A in chromatography has not been reported up to data. This work reports the investigation of the imidazolium ionic liquids functionalized pillar[6]arene (P6A-C10-IM-C8[NTf2]) as the stationary phase for gas chromatography (GC). The statically coated P6A-C10-IM-C8[NTf2] column (0.25 mm i.d.) showed moderate polarity and high column efficiency of 4733 plates/m determined by n-dodecane at 120 °C (k = 2.29). Owing to its unique amphiphilic conformation, the P6A-C10-IM-C8[NTf2] showed good column inertness and resolving capability for a wide range of analytes and isomers. Particularly, the P6A-C10-IM-C8[NTf2] column exhibited distinctly advantageous performance for the challenging isomers of halogenated benzenes, benzaldehydes, phenols and anilines over the common commercial columns, namely 5% phenyl methyl polysiloxane (HP-5) and 35% phenyl methyl polysiloxane (HP-35). In addition, it exhibited good column repeatability and reproducibility with RSD values on the retention times less than 0.05% for run-to-run, 0.38% for day-to-day and 2.94% for column-to-column, respectively. This work demonstrates the promising future of ionic liquid P[n]A stationary phases for chromatographic separations.

High Selectivity of A Novel Pillar[5]arene with Ester Units as a Gas Chromatographic Stationary Phase toward Aromatic Isomers.

This work reports the first example of employing ester-functionalized pillar[5]arene (P5A-C10-OAc) stationary phase for gas chromatography (GC) separations. The as-fabricated P5A-C10-OAc column achieved improved column efficiency of 4270 plates/m and separation performance in contrast to the P5-C10-Br column. The P5A-C10-OAc column showed good separation performance for a wide range of analytes such as alkanes, bromoalkanes, ketones, fatty acid methyl esters, aldehydes, alcohols, halobenzenes, anilines, phenols, naphthalenes, and showed sharp and symmetrical peak shapes for analytes that are liable to peak-tailing in GC analysis. As testified by the challenging isomer mixtures (bromonitrobenzene, chloronitrobenzene, bromobenzaldehyde, chlorobenzaldehyde, nitrobenzaldehyde), the P5A-C10-OAc column exhibited comprehensively higher separation capability than the P5A-C10-Br, P5A-C10 and commercial HP-35 columns. This work demonstrates the great potential of pillararene-based stationary phases as a new type of stationary phases for GC separations.

Ester-functionalized pillar[6]arene as the gas chromatographic stationary phase with high-resolution performance towards the challenging isomers of xylenes, diethylbenzenes, and ethyltoluenes.

This work presents the first example of theutilization of polar ester group functionalized pillar[6]arene (P6A-C10-OAc) as a stationary phase for capillary gas chromatographic (GC) separations. The statically coated P6A-C10-OAc column showed a high column efficiency of 5393 plates/m and moderate polar nature. Its resolving capability and retention behaviors were investigated for a mixture of 20 analytes and more than a dozen isomers from apolar to polar innature. As evidenced, the P6A-C10-OAc column achieved high-resolution separations of all the analytes and good inertness. Importantly, it exhibited distinctly advantageous performance for high resolution of thechallenging isomers of xylenes, diethylbenzenes, ethyltoluenes, and halobenzenes over the commercial HP-5 (5% phenyl dimethyl polysiloxane), HP-35 (25% phenyl dimethyl polysiloxane), and PEG-20M (polyethylene glycol) columns.

Multipurpose new gas chromatography column based on pillararenes functionalized with imidazolium ionic liquids

BackgroundGas chromatography is worldwide recognized as one of the most important analytical techniques, due to its high versatility and reliability. The heart of a gas chromatograph is the column, that allows analyte peak separations and, consequently, accurate qualitative and qualitative analyses. New and more efficient columns are always requested to satisfy new and challenging analytical needs. ResultsIn this work, imidazolium ionic liquids functionalized pillar [5] arenes have been used for the first time as gas chromatographic stationary phases, considering their highly symmetric pillar-shaped architecture with cavities rich in π-electrons. Four imidazolium ionic liquids functionalized pillar [5] arenes have been tested as stationary phases with numerous analytes and isomers. In particular, one of these showed superior performances if compared to commercial columns, enabling challenging isomeric separations of halogenated benzenes, aromatic aldehydes, and aromatic anilines. Significance and noveltyTo our knowledge, this is the first report on the use of the ionic liquid P[n]A as a stationary phase in chromatography, either in GC or liquid chromatography (LC) separations. This work demonstrates the promising potential of ionic liquid P[n]A stationary phases for chromatographic separations.

Elucidating the role of temperature and water on the π-complexation strength of copper(I) ion-containing ionic liquids using inverse gas chromatography

BackgroundThe π-complexation capability of copper(I) ion has been exploited in olefin/paraffin separations, but its propensity of undergoing disproportionation to copper(II) ion and copper metal has limited its use. Imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) can serve as solvents for copper(I) ions as they facilitate copper(I) ion-olefin complexation and can enhance its stability. To precisely monitor how copper(I) ions complex with olefins in ILs and evaluate the effects of environmental factors, it is necessary to construct an experimental platform capable of quantitatively measuring their molecular-level interactions. ResultsThis study employs an innovative inverse chromatography platform to measure changes in molecular-level interactions between copper(I) ions and olefins when the temperature and water content in the system are carefully controlled. Gas chromatographic stationary phases comprised of the 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ([C10MIM+][NTf2-]) IL containing 0.5 M [Cu+][NTf2-] were pre-heated to 140 °C maximizing copper(I) ion's π-complexation capability. The chromatographic retention of alkenes, dienes, and alkynes on the copper(I) ion/IL stationary phase was observed to be predominantly influenced by their partitioning between the carrier gas and copper(I) ion as well as between the IL and copper(I) ion. Upon introducing water to the system, the Gibbs free energy of solvation for olefins showed less favorable solvation into the stationary phase. In contrast, their solvation was significantly enhanced when the [Cu+][NTf2-]/[C10MIM+][NTf2-] stationary phase was heated to an elevated temperature, indicating that the π-complexation capability of copper(I) ion can be regenerated as needed. SignificanceThis study demonstrates that the stability of copper(I) ions can be improved by dissolving them into appropriate IL solvents. Moreover, the olefin separation performance of the copper(I) ion/IL stationary phase was found to be adjustable by the application of different column treatment conditions (i.e., heating and water introduction), opening the possibility of devising more stable, reliable, and efficient olefin separation systems based on copper(I) ion and IL solvents.

Rational design of high performance metal organic framework stationary phase for gas chromatography

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are assembled from metal ions or clusters and organic ligands. The high tunability of these components offers a solid structural foundation for achieving efficient gas chromatography (GC) separation. This review demonstrates that the design of high performance MOFs with suitable stationarity should consider both the thermodynamic interactions provided by these MOFs and the kinetic diffusion of analytes. Thermodynamic parameters are basic indicators for describing the interactions between various analytes and the stationary phase. Thermodynamic parameters such as retention factors, McReynolds constants, enthalpy changes, and entropy changes can reflect the relative intensity of thermodynamic interactions. For example, a larger enthalpy change indicates a stronger thermodynamic interaction between the analytes and stationary phase, whereas a smaller enthalpy change indicates a weaker interaction. In addition, the degree of entropy change reflects the relative degrees of freedom of analytes in the stationary phase. A larger entropy change indicates that the analytes have fewer degrees of freedom in the stationary phase. The higher the degree of restriction, the closer the adsorption of the analytes and, thus, the longer the retention time. Thermodynamic interactions, such as metal affinity, π-π interactions, polarity, and chiral sites, can be rationally introduced into MOF structures by pre- or post-modifications depending on the target analytes. These tailored thermodynamic interactions create a favorable environment with subtle differences for efficient analyte separation. For example, MOF stationarity may require large conjugation centers to provide specific π-π interactions to separate benzenes. Chiral groups may be required in the MOF structure to provide sufficient interactions to separate chiral isomers. The kinetic diffusion rate of the analytes is another critical factor that affects the separation performance of MOFs. The diffusion coefficients of analytes in the stationary phase (Ds) can be used to evaluate their diffusion rates. The chromatographic dynamics equation illustrates that the chromatographic peak of analytes tends to be sharper and more symmetrical when the Ds is large, whereas a wider trailing peak may appear when the Ds is small. The Van Deemter equation also proves that a low Ds may lead to a high theoretical plate height and low column efficiency, whereas a high Ds may lead to a low theoretical plate height and increased column efficiency. Analyte diffusion can be significantly influenced by the pore size, shape, particle size, and packing mode of MOFs. For instance, an excessively small pore size results in increased mass transfer resistance, which affects the diffusion of analytes in the stationary phase, probably leading to serious peak trailing. Thus, a suitable pore size is required to enhance the kinetic diffusion of analytes and improve the separation performance of MOFs. Theoretically, the design of a high performance MOF stationary phase requires the creation of routes for the rapid diffusion of analytes. However, the separation ability of an MOF is determined by not only the kinetic diffusion rate of the analytes but also the thermodynamic interactions it provides. An excessively fast diffusion rate may lead to insufficient interactions between the analytes and MOFs, compromising their ability to effectively separate different analytes. The thermodynamic interactions and kinetic diffusion of analytes are synergistic and mutually essential. Therefore, this review concludes with research on the influence of both the thermodynamic interactions and kinetic diffusion of analytes on the performance of MOF stationary phases. Based on the findings of this review, we propose that high performance MOF stationary phases can be achieved by balancing the thermodynamic interactions and kinetic diffusion of analytes in these phases through the rational design of the MOF structure. We believe that this review provides useful guidelines for the design of high performance MOF stationary phases.

Effect of position of deuterium atoms on gas chromatographic isotope effects

Deuterium substitution provides various benefits in drug molecules, including improvement in pharmacokinetic properties, reduction of toxicity, reduction of epimerization, etc. Also, it has been shown that the position of deuterium substitution affects the properties of drug molecules. Therefore, it is important to study low molecular weight deuterated isotopologues which constitute the deuterated pool and are building blocks of larger deuterated molecules. The effect of the position and number of deuterium atoms on the retention of 23 deuterated isotopologues on two gas chromatography stationary phases of different polarities was evaluated. It was observed that the ratio of calculated chromatographic isotope effects resulting from a deuterium atom connected to an sp2 vs. an sp3 hybridized carbon was more on the polar IL-111i stationary phase compared to the nonpolar PDMS-5, for each group of isotopologues. Also, a compound with a deuterium atom connected to an sp2 hybridized carbon always had greater retention than the analogous compound where deuterium was connected to an sp3 hybridized carbon. The van't Hoff plots for all analytes showed that the effect of entropy was almost negligible in the separation of deuterated vs. protiated isotopologues, thus these separations were mainly enthalpy driven.

GC-MS analysis of eight aminoindanes using three derivatization reagents.

Aminoindanes are a class of novel psychoactive substances (NPSs) that have become more prevalent over the past decade. GC-MS is often utilized for identifying seized drugs and is well regarded for its ability to separate mixtures. However, certain aminoindanes have similar mass spectral data and require specific gas chromatographic stationary phases for separation. Derivatization is an alternative method that can be applied to GC-MS to enhance chromatographic results, providing more selective analysis in seized-drug identification. This study investigates derivatization techniques to provide options for forensic science laboratories in accurately identifying aminoindanes. Three derivatization reagents, N-methyl-bis(trifluoroacetamide) (MBTFA), heptafluorobutyric anhydride (HFBA), and ethyl chloroformate (ECF) were evaluated for the analysis of eight aminoindanes by GC-MS using two common gas chromatographic stationary phases, Rxi®-5Sil MS and Rxi®-1Sil MS. All three derivatization methods successfully isolated eight aminoindanes, including the isomers 4,5-methylenedioxy-2-aminoindane (4,5-MDAI), and 5,6-methylenedioxy-2-aminoindane (5,6-MDAI) that could not be differentiated prior to derivatization. Reduced peak tailing and increased abundance were observed after derivatization for all the compounds, and mass spectra of the derivatives contained individualizing fragment ions that allowed for further characterization of the aminoindanes. This excluded 4,5-MDAI and 5,6-MDAI as they shared the same characteristic ions and were only distinguishable by their retention times. All three derivatization techniques used in this study allow for successful characterization of the aminoindanes and give forensic science laboratories flexibility in their analysis approach when they encounter these compounds.

End-modification of poly(ether-carbonate) copolymer by adamantane cages: An effective approach for improving the selectivity of gas chromatographic stationary phases

This work reports the investigation of a new poly(propylene-carbonate) copolymer terminated by the adamantane cages (APPC) as the stationary phase for gas chromatographic (GC) analyses. In GC, the selectivity of a stationary phase is the key factor that governs the column separation performance for analytes, particularly those of high similarity in structures and properties. As such, we employed more than a dozen of isomer mixtures of separation difficulty for investigating the separation performance of the APPC column, involving the isomers of alkanes, alkylbenzenes, halobenzenes phenols and anilines. Meanwhile, the column coated with poly(propylene carbonate) diol (PPCD) differing from APPC only in their terminal groups and two commercial columns coated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polysiloxane, respectively, were used as the reference columns. The separation results evidenced the distinctly advantageous performance of the APPC column over the reference columns. Moreover, the APPC column showed excellent repeatability and reproducibility with the relative standard deviation (RSD) values over the range of 0.01%–0.04% for run-to-run, 0.15%–0.28% for day-to-day and 3.4%–3.9% for column-to-column (n = 4). Its application to GC–MS analysis of the verbena essential oil demonstrated its separation advantages for a wide range of components in practical samples. Up to date, the adamantyl-terminated poly(ether-carbonate) copolymers have not been reported in any fields. Its high-resolution performance demonstrates the feasibility of adamantyl-terminated block copolymers as highly selective stationary phases for GC analyses, which offers a vast room for fundamental researches and applications.

An Amphiphilic Star-Shaped Polymer (Star-PEG-PCL2) used as a Stationary Phase for GC.

A star-shaped polymer (Star-PEG-PCL2) was synthesized with PCL and PEG and used as a stationary phase for gas chromatography. The statically coated Star-PEG-PCL2 column exhibited an efficiency of 2260 plates/m determined by naphthalene at 120 °C and moderate polarity. The Star-PEG-PCL2 column showed high resolution performance for isomers of a wide ranging polarity, including methylnaphthalenes, halogenated benzenes, nitrobenzene, phenols, and anilines, and displayed dual-nature selectivity for a mixture of 17 analytes. Also, the Star-PEG-PCL2 column exhibited good separation performance and column inertness for Grob test mixture and a series of cis-/trans-isomers. In addition, it exhibited advantageous separation performance over the commercial HP-35 and PEG-20M columns for chloroaniline and bromoaniline isomers through its unique three-dimensional framework. In conclusion, it has good potential as a new stationary phase for separating a variety of analytes because of its special structure and excellent separation performance.

Separation performance of the calix[8]arene functionalized with polyethylene glycol units for capillary gas chromatography.

In this paper, an amphiphilic calix[8]arene with polyethylene glycol unit branches (C8A-PEG) was synthesized and applied for capillary gas chromatography (GC). The C8A-PEG was coated on the inner wall of a capillary column by a static method with the column efficiency of 3165 plates/m and polar nature. As demonstrated, the C8A-PEG column has excellent physicochemical properties and separation performance since it has π-electron-rich 3D cavity which combines with polar PEG units. Compared with two columns corresponding to the construction units C8A and PEG, the C8A-PEG column shows distinctly advantageous performance for the mixture of 22 components with diverse types. Impressively, it shows satisfactory resolution for positional isomers and cis-/trans- isomers, especially the challenging isomers of toluidine and dimethylaniline. The outstanding distinguishing capability of the C8A-PEG stationary phase is mainly attributed to the abundant molecular recognition interactions, including van der Waals, dipole-dipole, H-bonding and π-π stacking interactions. This work has proved that the new GC stationary phases constructed by different units can complement each other's advantages, improve their physicochemical properties and separation performance, and have broad application prospects in chromatographic analysis.

H2/D2 Separation Using UTSA-16@CAU-10-H@γ-AlOOH Composites as the Stationary Phase in Gas Chromatography via the Additive Effects of Kinetic Sieving and Chemical Affinity Quantum Sieving.

In this work, CAU-10-H@γ-AlOOH is prepared, and then UTSA-16 is loaded on CAU-10-H@γ-AlOOH to obtain UTSA-16@CAU-10-H@γ-AlOOH. Using the as-prepared composites as stationary materials by cryogenic gas chromatography at 77 K, while CAU-10-H@γ-AlOOH achieves the complete separation of ortho-H2 (o-H2) and D2 with a resolution R of 1.66 and a separation time t of 9.52 min, UTSA-16@CAU-10-H@γ-AlOOH achieves higher efficiency separation of hydrogen isotopes in a shorter separation time (4.56 min) with R = 1.7. Molecular simulation results show that CAU-10-H has both chemical affinity quantum sieving and kinetic sieving effects for H2/D2 at 77 K, and UTSA-16 can only exert the kinetic sieving effect. UTSA-16's load on CAU-10-H@γ-AlOOH weakens the adsorption of hydrogen isotopes, and the presence of Co2+ in UTSA-16 promotes the conversion of para-H2 to ortho-H2. In gas chromatography, H2 was preferentially desorbed from the system due to strong D2 adsorption caused by the chemical affinity quantum sieving effect and faster H2 diffusion caused by the kinetic sieving effect. These additive effects achieved efficient hydrogen isotope separation at 77 K.

Does High Polarity Mean High Retention on Stationary Phases in Gas Chromatography?

Stationary phase chemistry, polarity, and selectivity have been of ongoing interest since the inception of gas chromatography (GC) in the 1950s. In the early days when most analyses were performed on packed columns, there were hundreds of stationary phase materials available. Today, with modern capillary columns, most GC analyses are performed with a few stationary phases, with a wide array of choices for specialty applications. Stationary phases are often classified using the broad term polarity, with polar stationary phases recommended for separating polar analytes and nonpolar stationary phases recommended for nonpolar analytes. In this installment, we examine the idea of stationary phase polarity. We examine the assumptions inherent in the most popular stationary phase polarity evaluating systems—McReynolds constants and the polarity scale. We see that high polarity does not always mean greater retention or higher selectivity.

Effect of silver(I) ion reduction on the selectivity of olefins, paraffins, and aromatic compounds by gas chromatographic stationary phases consisting of silver(I) salts in ionic liquids

The olefin/paraffin selectivity offered by ionic liquid (IL) stationary phases can be enhanced through the addition of silver(I) ion, which is well-known to undergo selective complexation with unsaturated compounds. However, such stationary phases often suffer from the loss of chromatographic selectivity as silver(I) ion can be reduced to elemental silver. To maintain the separation performance of silver(I) ion/IL stationary phases, an understanding of factors and conditions that promote the reduction of silver(I) ion is needed. In this study, capillary gas chromatography columns featuring a stationary phase consisting of the 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ([C10MIM+][NTf2−]) IL impregnated with [Ag+][NTf2−] were examined to investigate the effects of temperature, hydrogen content in exposure gas stream, and time of heating/exposure events on olefin selectivity. Retention factors of representative analytes, such as C6 olefins and paraffins as well as aromatic compounds, were measured after subjecting the columns to the aforementioned conditions, followed by an evaluation of selectivity factors over time. Selectivity factors of olefins and aromatic compounds were observed to decrease significantly when the stationary phases were heated to temperatures higher than 110°C as well as being subjected to mixed gas streams containing greater than 50 mol% of hydrogen. As constant column heating temperatures were applied under exposure gas mixtures containing hydrogen and nitrogen, a gradual decrease in analyte selectivity factors was observed under prolonged periods of time. However, application of a ternary gas mixture comprised of 25/50/25 mol% hydrogen/nitrogen/methane resulted in an increase in the 3-hexyne/cis-2-hexene selectivity when measured at 120°C for 60 h, due to a smaller decrease in the retention factor of 3-hexyne compared to cis-2-hexene.

Impact of the Polymer Backbone Structure on the Separation Properties of New Stationary Phases Based on Tricyclononenes

The main purpose of this paper is to compare the chromatographic properties of capillary columns prepared with polymers with different backbone structures and to demonstrate the possibility of polymer differentiation via inverse gas chromatography. With the use of addition and metathesis types of polymerization of tricyclononenes, two new stationary phases were prepared. The metathesis polymer contained double bonds in the polymeric backbone while the backbone of the addition polymer was fully saturated and relatively mobile. A comparison of the separation and adsorption properties of new phases with conventional gas chromatography (GC) stationary phases clearly indicated their non-polar characteristics. However, the difference in the polymer structure appeared to have very little effect on the stationary phase separation properties, so other parameters were used for polymer characterization. The thermodynamic parameters of the sorption of alkanes and aromatic compounds in both polymeric stationary phases were also very similar; however, the entropy of sorption for hydrocarbons with seven or more carbon atoms was different for the two polymers. An evaluation of the specific surface energy of the stationary phases also allowed us to discriminate the two stationary phases.

Benzimidazolium Ionic‐Liquid‐Functionalized Star‐shaped Copolymer Stationary Phase for Capillary Gas Chromatography

AbstractIn this work, a novel star‐shaped copolymer functionalized by benzimidazolium ionic liquid (Star‐PEG‐PCL2‐2Bim) was synthesized and applied as stationary phase in capillary gas chromatography (GC). After static coating, the Star‐PEG‐PCL2‐2Bim column exhibited a column efficiency of 2655 plates/m and moderate polarity. The Star‐PEG‐PCL2‐2Bim column showed preferential retention and high resolving capability for hydrogen‐bonded and aromatic analytes, showing advantages over the ordinary polysiloxane phase. Impressively, it attained high resolution for the isomer mixtures of halogenated benzene, nitrobenzene, phenol and benzaldehydes with good peak shapes. The advantageous separation performance shows the good potential of the Star‐PEG‐PCL2‐2Bim stationary phase for GC analysis.

A new stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography based on amphiphilic triblock copolymer – Benzimidazolium ionic liquid

In this work, a novel amphiphilic triblock copolymer bonded with benzimidazolium ionic liquid (TCP-Bim) was designed, synthesized, and employed as stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography (GC) column. This innovative column exhibited moderate polarity and an efficiency of 3280 plates/m, showing high resolutions for a wide range of analytes, with marked capabilities towards isomer separations, and different retention behaviors and separation performances respect to TCP or commercial HP-35 and PEG-20 M columns. The TCP-Bim stationary phase has exhibited in some cases unmatched separation capabilities, like, for example, in the case of separation of chloroaniline and bromoaniline. Its column performances have been compared with TCP and other commercial columns analyzing from apolar to polar compounds, showing in every case outstanding capability which clearly indicate that TCP-Bim can be considered a very interesting candidate as a new type of stationary phase in GC.

Bioconcentration of imidazolium ionic liquids: In vivo evaluation in marine mussels Mytilus trossulus

Although imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) are beginning to be used more widely in many industrial fields e.g., as reaction media, electrolytes, stationary phases in gas chromatography), there is still little information about their potential environmental fate. Among the uncertainties regarding the risks associated with these compounds, bioconcentration is one of the key issues, about which many doubts have been raised in recent years. While in vitro data suggest that permanently charged compounds can also bioconcentrate, conclusive evidence in the form of studies on organisms, at least for selected compounds, is needed. Therefore, the main objective of this work was to determine whether imidazolium cations of ILs, namely 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium ([IM18]+) and 1-methyl-3-dodecylimidazolium ([IM1–12]+), can bioconcentrate in marine invertebrates tissues. During 21-day experiments, Mytilus trossulus mussels were exposed to these cations individually, at a concentration of 10 μg/L. In our study, it has been demonstrated for the first time during in vivo study, that long-chain imidazolium ionic liquids can bioconcentrate. The determined BCF value for [IM1–12]+ of 21,901 ± 3400 L/kg makes this compound to be considered highly bioaccumulative according to commonly accepted criteria. However, the obtained BCF for [IM18]+ (with the value below 100) suggests that this cation has little potential for bioconcentration. On the other hand, no salinity or anion influence on the bioconcentration of the tested cations was observed. Our tests also confirm that imidazolium ILs exhibit acute toxicity only at relatively high concentration levels, as LC50 reached 0.68 mg/L for [IM1–12][Br], and 11.66 mg/L for [IM18][C(CN)3]. This further confirms that the risks associated with the potential presence of these compounds in the environment should be attributed to their high persistence and potential bioconcentration, rather than acute toxicity.
