The Relationship between Maternal Factors and the Timely Initiation of Complementary Feeding for Infants, in West Sumatera Province, Indonesia

Objective − This study looked into the relationship between maternal factors and the timely initiation of complementary feeding for infants. Material and Methods − A cross-sectional study was conducted from September to December 2022 on 196 mothers and their children aged 6-23 months. This study collected data through a questionnaire that included sociodemographic informa- tion, the Infant and Young Child Feeding Questionnaire for Child Care Providers (IYCF-CCPQ), the Iowa Infant Feeding At- titude Scale (IIFAS), and the time of initiation of complementary feeding.Results − This study included 196 mothers, with 128 (55.1%) having adequate knowledge of complementary feeding and 112 mothers (59.7%) had a negative view of infant feeding. The rate of timely initiation of complementary feeding was 71.4%. The mothers’ knowledge of infant feeding did not predict the timely initiation of complementary feeding (OR=1.18; 95% CI=0.62-2.26). However, maternal attitudes toward infant feeding were linked to the timely initiation of complementary feeding (OR=2.14; 95% CI=1.14-4.02). Conclusions − Mothers with positive attitudes toward infant feeding were twice as likely to start complementary feeding on time as those with negative at- titudes. Counseling mothers on the importance of timely initiation of complementary feeding is therefore required to improve mothers’ attitudes toward providing complementary foods to their infants in accordance with health recommendations.

Parent-reported offering of allergen foods to infants during complementary feeding: an observational study

The prevalence of food allergies in New Zealand infants is unknown; however, it is thought to be similar to Australia, where the prevalence is over 10% of 1-year-olds(1). Current New Zealand recommendations for reducing the risk of food allergies are to: offer all infants major food allergens (age appropriate texture) at the start of complementary feeding (around 6 months); ensure major allergens are given to all infants before 1 year; once a major allergen is tolerated, maintain tolerance by regularly (approximately twice a week) offering the allergen food; and continue breastfeeding while introducing complementary foods(2). To our knowledge, there is no research investigating whether parents follow these recommendations. Therefore, this study aimed to explore parental offering of major food allergens to infants during complementary feeding and parental-reported food allergies. The cross-sectional study included 625 parent-infant dyads from the multi-centred (Auckland and Dunedin) First Foods New Zealand study. Infants were 7-10 months of age and participants were recruited in 2020-2022. This secondary analysis included the use of a study questionnaire and 24-hour diet recall data. The questionnaire included determining whether the infant was currently breastfed, whether major food allergens were offered to the infant, whether parents intended to avoid any foods during the first year of life, whether the infant had any known food allergies, and if so, how they were diagnosed. For assessing consumers of major food allergens, 24-hour diet recall data was used (2 days per infant). The questionnaire was used to determine that all major food allergens were offered to 17% of infants aged 9-10 months. On the diet recall days, dairy (94.4%) and wheat (91.2%) were the most common major food allergens consumed. Breastfed infants (n = 414) were more likely to consume sesame than non-breastfed infants (n = 211) (48.8% vs 33.7%, p≤0.001). Overall, 12.6% of infants had a parental-reported food allergy, with egg allergy being the most common (45.6% of the parents who reported a food allergy). A symptomatic response after exposure was the most common diagnostic tool. In conclusion, only 17% of infants were offered all major food allergens by 9-10 months of age. More guidance may be required to ensure current recommendations are followed and that all major food allergens are introduced by 1 year of age. These results provide critical insight into parents’ current practices, which is essential in determining whether more targeted advice regarding allergy prevention and diagnosis is required.

Associations between breastfeeding duration and adherence to complementary feeding recommendations in Scotland.

We aimed to describe how breastfeeding relates to adherence to complementary feeding (CF) recommendations, diet diversification and feeding skills development and whether sociodemographic factors explain any differences observed. The Scottish Maternal Infant and Nutrition Survey for infants aged 8-12 months collected breastfeeding history, CF practices, diet and sociodemographic data using a self-completion questionnaire. Non-healthful CF practices were starting CF < 6 months, any consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), sweet or salty snacks (treats) or unmodified cow's milk and regular consumption of commercial baby foods. Diet diversification and feeding skills were assessed by amount of self-feeding and number of food groups, meals and snacks eaten daily. Of the 2730 mothers, 20% were solely infant formula fed (IFF) and 48% continued breastfeeding ≥6 months. Compared to IFF babies, mothers who gave any breast milk ≥6 months were more likely to start CF ≥ 6 months compared to those IFF (66% vs. 37%) and less likely to give treats (15% vs. 45%), SSBs (11% vs. 20%) and commercial baby foods (31% vs. 53%). These associations remained highly significant (p < 0.001) even after sociodemographic factor adjustment. Despite starting CF later, infants breastfed ≥6 months ate the same number of food groups and meals as those IFF, were just as likely to self-feed purees and more likely to self-feed finger foods daily (87% vs. 81% p < 0.001). Mothers who breastfeed beyond 6 months adhere more to CF recommendations and start CF later compared to IFF, but their babies eat a similarly diverse diet and have similar feeding skills.

The role of microbiota and flavonoids in maintaining the balance of helper and regulatory T-lymphocytes associated with the intestinal immune barrier

The gastrointestinal tract is a barrier, represented by dynamic and mutually regulating components (microbial, chemical, physical and immune) for the selective penetration of luminal contents into the internal environment. From the point of view of immunologists, even in a physiological condition, the epithelium of the intestinal wall is in a state of mild inflammation, which is explained by the constant invasion of antigens (food, microbial) and, in turn, the constant readiness of the immune system to respond. The purpose of this review was to analyze information about the formation of microbial and immunological barriers, immunological tolerance to microbiota and the possible role of flavonoids in this. Material and methods. The literature search was carried out using PubMed, ResearchGate, Elibrary databases mainly for the last 10 years, using the following keywords: flavonoid, gut microbiome/microbiota, Th17, Treg, RORγt, immunity, segmented filamentous bacteria. Results. During the immune response, a significant role in maintaining the intestinal barrier function is assigned to helper T lymphocytes type 17 (Th17). The intestinal microbiome is a key element in the formation of the immune barrier. Th17 differentiation in the intestine is fully triggered by commensals (apparently, the main role belongs to segmented filamentous bacteria) after weaning and the start of complementary feeding. Pro-inflammatory Th17 effectors in the gut are controlled by anti-inflammatory regulatory T-cells (Treg). In recent years, it has been established that despite the opposing functions of regulatory cells and effector Th17 cells, their differentiation is similar and is characterized by the expression of the common transcription factor RORγt. The main part of the peripheral regulatory lymphocytes of the intestine is a population that stably expresses not only FOXP3, but also RORγt. Flavonoids, which are plant secondary metabolites of the polyphenolic structure, are able to inhibit intracellular kinases and, as a result, influence the activation and implementation of effector functions of immunocompetent cells. Some flavonoids promote RORγt expression and appear to be able to reprogram the effector phenotype of Th17 cells, reducing their pathogenicity. Conclusion. Understanding the interactions between the microbiota, immune cells, and factors involved in their regulation, which are critical for the maintenance of tolerance, may facilitate progress in the prevention and therapeutic approaches to treat immunoinflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the digitization of routine pediatric practice in Spain: A nationwide survey study.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced a change in the working dynamics of all healthcare professionals, leading to the sudden introduction of telemedicine. Although until that moment telemedicine applications had been described in the paediatric age, their use was anecdotal. To analyse the experience of Spanish paediatricians after the forced digitization of consultations due to the pandemic. A cross-sectional survey-type study was designed to obtain information from Spanish paediatricians about the changes that took place in the usual clinical practice. 306 health professionals participated in the study Most of them agreed on the use of the internet and social networks during the pandemic, referring to mail or WhatsApp® as usual channels of communication with their patients' families. There was a great agreement among paediatricians that the evaluation of newborns after hospital discharge and establishing methodologies that allow childhood vaccination and the identification of subsidiary patients for face-to-face evaluation were necessary although the limitations of the lockdown. The idea that telephone and digital consultations have optimized the consultation time and that they will probably continue after the end of the pandemic was generally accepted. No changes in adherence to breastfeeding or the start of complementary feeding were referred to, but an increase in the duration of breastfeeding and the appearance of frequent hoaxes in social networks concerning infant feeding were found. It is necessary to analyse the impact of telemedicine in paediatric consultations during the pandemic to evaluate its effectiveness and quality to maintain it in routine paediatric practice.

Failure in the breastfeeding process is often caused by the emergence of several problems, both problems for the mother and the baby. Problems from mothers that arise during breastfeeding can start before delivery (antenatal period), in the early postpartum period, and after late labor. Problems with breastfeeding can also be caused by special circumstances, such as delayed onset of lactation on early postpartum period, the mother complaining that her baby often cries or refuses to breastfeed, which then means that the milk is not enough or not good enough to make the decision to stop breastfeeding. Anxiety caused by fear of not being able to produce milk and not having enough milk is the most common reason women fail to start breastfeeding, stop breastfeeding too soon, or start complementary feeding before it is needed. One alternative to help facilitate breast milk is to do oxytocin massage. In this case study, after full breast oxytocin massage before breastfeeding, the milk output was good, the baby showed a good sucking and swallowing response, after the oxytocin massage technique was carried out independently and assisted by the husband, the milk came out smoothly. Mother says that the baby is calm and sleeps soundly not fussy.

The sweet tooth of infancy: Is sweetness exposure related to sweetness liking in infants up to 12 months of age?

Infants become increasingly exposed to sweet-tasting foods in their first year of life. However, it is still unclear whether repeated exposure to sweet taste is linked to infants' sweetness liking during this period. Making use of data from the OPALINE cohort, this study aimed to examine the link between sweetness exposure and sweetness liking during two important periods in early infant feeding: at the start of complementary feeding (3-6 months) and the transition to the family table (10-12 months). Infants' sweetness exposure was assessed using 7-d food records which were completed by mothers every month (n 312), reporting daily consumption rates of formula/breast milk or complementary food and the type of formula milk and/or complementary foods for each feeding occasion. Infants' sweetness liking was studied in the laboratory at 3, 6 and 12 months of age by assessing their response to a lactose-water solution and the amount drunk of this solution compared with plain water. Linear regressions and structural equation model assessed associations between exposure to and liking for sweetness at 6 and 12 months. Neither at 6 (n 182) nor at 12 months (n 197) was sweetness exposure associated with sweetness liking. While sweetness liking at 3 months was unrelated to liking at 6 months, the latter predicted sweetness liking at 12 months. These findings demonstrate no association between sweetness exposure at 3 to 12 months and liking at 6 and 12 months despite a sharp increase in sweetness exposure in that period. However, sweetness liking at 6 and 12 months was positively associated.

Investigation of feeding characteristics of babies for 0-12 months: Aydın province sampling

Purpose: Mothers' practices of complementary feeding and exclusive breastfeeding may differ relative to various factors. The objectives of this research were to investigate the mothers' practices of their babies' nutrition and the factors affecting them in the sample of Aydın province. Materials and methods: The analytical and cross-sectional designed research was carried out in a total of 23 Family Health Centers in the Efeler district of Aydın province. The research sample consisted of 350 mothers with 12-24 months old babies. The research data was collected using data collection forms, which were filled out by face-to-face interviews with mothers after their verbal approval was obtained. Results: The exclusive breastfeeding duration was 6 (0-9) months, and the time to start complementary feeding was 6 (4-10) months. The exclusive breastfeeding duration of babies of high school graduate mothers was shorter. Babies in extended families had longer exclusive breastfeeding duration, and there was a weak positive correlation between the numbers of family members and exclusive breastfeeding duration. Mothers with lower income levels started complementary feeding earlier, and mothers who started complementary feeding earliest were high school graduates among the education groups. Conclusion: The research showed that the rate of starting complementary feeding early (30.6%) was not low, and mothers had insufficient knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding and appropriate complementary feeding practices. Therefore, training courses on baby nutrition should be given to mothers.

Knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding infant feeding among mothers of children with severe acute malnutrition in the rural areas of Northern India

Introduction: Malnutrition has been identified as one of the principal causes limiting India’s globaleconomic potential. The infant and young child-feeding practices determine the nutritional status,growth and ultimately the survival of infants and young children. The study aimed to assess theknowledge, attitude and practices of rural mothers with children diagnosed with severe acutemalnutrition (SAM) regarding infant feeding. Methodology: A hospital-based cross-sectionaldescriptive study on 116 mothers from the rural area of Northern India with children diagnosed withSAM. Assessment of knowledge, attitude and practice of mothers regarding infant feeding was donethrough face to face interviews using a structured questionnaire containing 32 questions. Results:The mean age of admitted children was 14.48 ± 4.71 months. The majority of mothers (81.9%)studied till only primary school or were illiterate. The appropriate knowledge about early initiation ofbreastfeeding and the ideal time to start complementary feeding was found in 42.4% and 45.6% ofmothers respectively which was suboptimal. The attitude towards ideal breastfeeding practices waspositive in most mothers. However in practice only 59.4% of mothers exclusively breastfed theirbabies till 6 months and 54.3% delayed initiation of complementary feed beyond 9 months of age.The frequency of complementary feeding was inadequate in the 6-8 months age group as stated by88.6% of mothers and minimum dietary diversity was not followed by 68.1% of mothers.Conclusion: The knowledge and positive attitude towards infant feeding are not applied in practiceby mothers. Efforts should be made to improve knowledge, attitude and practice with an emphasison complementary feeding indicators to reduce the burden of malnutrition in the rural population.67

Comparison of Feeding Behaviors in Term and Preterm Infants at Six Months Corrected Age

Background and Objectives: This study compares feeding behaviors and problems of in term Infants and preterm infants at 6 months corrected age. Subjects and Methods The study was of observational-sectional type (descriptive and analytic) and sampling was one-step cluster probability of the available population in the form of the whole number. Feeding behaviors of 90 infants, including 60 term infants and 30 preterm infants, were assessed by speech and language pathologists through interviews with parents and recorded in a questionnaire. The information in this questionnaire includes feeding behaviors, feeding problems, feeding period, infant weight at 2, 4, 6 months and the age of the child to start complementary feeding, SPSS software version 24 was used to analyze the data. In all the present study, P-value less than 5% was considered as a significant level. Results The results showed that the two groups were significantly different in the mean score of feeding behavior (P= 0.001), feeding problems (P= 0.047) and weight gain (P&lt;0.001). While in feeding duration (P= 0.53) and Frequency of feeding (P= 0.1) there was no significant difference. Of the 90 infants studied, more than 80% of them started feeding in the form of puree in the age group of 4-6 months. Conclusion Premature infants have more feeding problems and less weight gain than normal infants. It is recommended that the speech and language pathologist evaluate and intervene appropriately for oral skills and nutrition of premature infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit.

Are the recommendations of paediatricians about complementary feeding aligned with current guidelines in Uruguay?

To explore Uruguayan paediatricians' personal recommendations about complementary feeding and to assess if they are aligned with current guidelines and scientific evidence. A questionnaire composed of open-ended questions was used to explore foods recommended to start complementary feeding, foods regarded as the most important during the first meals, recommendations for delayed introduction of foods and foods that should be avoided. Reasons underlying the recommendations were also explored. Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay (Latin America). A total of 212 paediatricians were recruited during a National Pediatrics Conference, organised by the Uruguayan Society of Pediatrics. The recommendations about complementary feeding provided by paediatricians to parents and caregivers in Uruguay seemed not to be fully aligned with the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Health. Paediatricians recommend a rigid food introduction sequence, characterised by the early introduction of soft pureed vegetables and fruits, followed by meat and the delayed introduction of allergenic foods. Food diversity and the concept of ultra-processed were not frequently identified in the responses. Results stress the importance of developing educational and communication approaches targeted at paediatricians to contribute to the uptake of updated recommendations regarding complementary feeding.

A cross sectional study of nutritional dermatoses among malnourished children in a tertiary care centre

Background: Nutritional deficiencies are most prevalent in underdeveloped and developing countries of the world. An impaired nutritional status alters the structural integrity and biological function of the skin, resulting in an abnormal skin barrier. The objective was to study the various cutaneous spectrums of nutritional deficiency (ND) in children. Methods: A total of 100 malnourished children were included over a period of 6 months. Preliminary data of children regarding age, start of complementary feeding, maternal education, and parity were recorded. All children were examined thoroughly for the presence of cutaneous, mucosal, hair, and nail changes. Results: Majority were in the age group of 6–24 months, followed by 25–36 months. M:F ratio was 1:1.1. Majority of mothers were illiterate (43%). Only 8% babies were bottle-fed and complementary feeding was started in 56% of children between the months of 6 and 12. Seventy percent children were born to multiparous mothers. Approximately 50% children were of low-birth weight. Ninety-four percent of families resided in the rural areas. The cutaneous features seen include xerodermia (58%), lusterless hair (53%), pigmentary changes (36%), loss of subcutaneous fat (31%), flag sign (29%), angular cheilities (20%), etc. Other features seen were monkey-like facies (4%), long eyelashes (16%), ichthyotic and lichenoid skin changes (16%), and flaky paint dermatosis (2%). Conclusions: The most common cutaneous feature seen was xerodermia and least frequent one was flaky paint dermatosis. Many cases of ND are diagnosed only after evident skin changes. There is significant morbidity and sometimes mortality associated with certain nutritional deficiencies. Their prompt recognition, diagnosis, and treatment by clinicians are of great importance.

Complementary feeding practices and their association with adiposity indicators at 12 months of age.

Nutrition during the first 1000 days of life represents a window of opportunity to reduce the risk of metabolic dysfunctions later in life. Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and adequate introduction of solid foods are essential to promote metabolic and nutritional benefits. We evaluated the association of infant feeding practices from birth to 6 months (M) with adiposity indicators at 12 M. We performed a secondary analysis of 106 healthy term infants born from a cohort of healthy pregnant women. Type of breastfeeding (exclusive or nonexclusive), the start of complementary feeding (CF) (before (<4 M) or after (≥4 M)), and adiposity (body mass index - BMI, body mass index-for-age - BMI/A, waist circumference - WC, and waist circumference-length ratio - WLR) were evaluated at 12 M using descriptive statistics, mean differences, X2, and linear regression models. During the first 6 M, 28.3% (n = 30) of the infants received EBF. Early CF (<4 M) was present in 26.4% (n = 28) of the infants. Children who started CF < 4 M were less breastfed, received added sugars as the most frequently introduced food category, and showed higher BMI, BMI/A, WC, and WLR; those who consumed added sugars early (<4 M) had a higher WC. Starting CF < 4 M was the main factor associated with a higher WC at 12 M. Unhealthy infant feeding practices, such as lack of EBF, early CF, and early introduction of sugars, may be associated with higher adiposity at 12 M.

Acceptability to parents of a baby-led approach to introducing solids

AbstractIn Baby-Led Weaning (BLW), infants are offered foods they can pick up and feed themselves from the start of complementary feeding. Infants who are fully BLW are not spoonfed at all by their parents, feeding themselves all their foods instead. The Baby-Led Introduction to SolidS (BLISS) study was a randomised controlled trial of the effect of a modified version of BLW5 on infant growth, iron status, and risk of choking, and provides an opportunity to investigate parents’ experiences of using a baby-led approach to infant feeding. Complementary feeding methods are usually chosen by parents, so it is important to ascertain whether parents find a baby-led method of introducing solids acceptable if they are assigned to follow it. This is both to determine whether it would be feasible to randomise them to follow BLW in future randomised controlled trials and because, if beneficial effects of BLW are shown, policy makers need to know whether parents would find it acceptable to follow BLW. The aim of this analysis was to determine the acceptability to parents of a baby-led approach to complementary feeding when their infant was 7 to 12 months of age. In total, 206 participants were randomised to Control (n = 101) or BLISS (n = 105) groups in the third trimester of pregnancy. When the infants were 7, 8, 9, and 12 months of age, questionnaires were administered to determine parents’ happiness and frustration with their feeding method, and attitudes regarding its convenience, mess, and expense. Food cost was estimated using supermarket prices linked to a 3-day weighed diet record collected at 7 months of age. Both groups reported high levels of happiness and convenience, but also reported finding complementary feeding very frustrating. There were two significant differences between the groups – the BLISS group reported less messiness, and were more likely to perceive their method as expensive. The actual food cost per day was not statistically significantly different between the two groups (NZ$1.70 for BLISS, NZ$1.90 for Controls). In conclusion, parents did not find a baby-led approach to introducing solids any less acceptable than control parents found standard infant feeding. It is, therefore, feasible to run studies where parents are randomised to follow a baby-led approach to complementary feeding and, should health advantages to BLW be identified, parents are likely to find BLW acceptable to follow.

BABY-LED WEANING, AN OVERVIEW OF THE NEW APPROACH TO FOOD INTRODUCTION: INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW.

ABSTRACTObjective:To analyze the scientific literature on Baby-Led Weaning with an integrative literature review to identify risks and benefits.Data source:The databases used were: National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS – Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde), US National Library of Medicine (PubMed), and Virtual Health Library (BVS – Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde) in December 2017. The inclusion criteria established were publications in English with the descriptor “baby-led weaning” in the heading, abstract, or keywords, classified as original articles, of primary nature, and available online and in full. We excluded review articles, editorials, letters to the editor, critical commentaries, and books on the subject, as well as articles not available in full and duplicates.Data summary:We identified 106 articles, of which 17 met the selection criteria. The Baby-Led Weaning method was significantly associated with the baby’s satiety, the start of complementary feeding, and adequacy of weight gain. On the other hand, choking and the intake of micronutrients were negatively associated, however with no statistical differences.Conclusions:Despite the benefits found, the risks still deserve attention and should be investigated with longitudinal randomized controlled studies to ensure the safety of the method when practiced exclusively.

Factors Associated with Maternal Worry about Her Young Child Exhibiting Choosy Feeding Behaviour.

Choosiness in young children is a normal behaviour that sometimes worries parents. The study aimed to investigate factors that are associated with a mother being worried about her child’s choosy feeding behaviour. Parents of singleton children from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (n = 5710) completed a questionnaire assessing perception of their child’s choosy feeding behaviour at 15 months of age and whether this choosiness worried them. Feeding behaviours and practices throughout the first 15 months were captured. Multinomial logistic regression models with three levels of worry (not at all, a bit and greatly) as the dependent variables tested associations with variables from pregnancy and infancy. Half of the children (56%) were described as choosy at 15 months; of these 27% had mothers who were a bit worried and 5% greatly worried. Mothers showed greater odds of being worried if the child was first born, difficult to feed or refused solids by 6 months of age. Worried mothers had shown greater odds of introducing lumpy foods late (after 9 months). Feeding vegetables regularly by 6 months was associated with lower odds of worry at 15 months. Support and advice to parents at the start of complementary feeding could help to alleviate worry. Parents should be reassured that choosiness is a normal part of child development.

Modified Version of Baby-Led Weaning Does Not Result in Lower Zinc Intake or Status in Infants: A Randomized Controlled Trial

BackgroundLittle is known about zinc intakes and status during complementary feeding. This is particularly true for baby-led approaches, which encourage infants to feed themselves from the start of complementary feeding, although self-feeding may restrict the intake of zinc-rich foods. ObjectiveTo determine the zinc intakes, sources, and biochemical zinc status of infants following Baby-Led Introduction to SolidS (BLISS), a modified version of Baby-Led Weaning (BLW), compared with traditional spoon-feeding. DesignSecondary analysis of the BLISS randomized controlled trial. Participants/settingBetween 2012 and 2014, 206 community-based participants from Dunedin, New Zealand were randomized to a Control or BLISS group. InterventionBLISS participants received eight study visits (antenatal to 9 months) providing education and support regarding BLISS (ie, infant self-feeding from 6 months with modifications to address concerns about iron, choking, and growth). Main outcome measuresDietary zinc intakes at 7 and 12 months (weighed 3-day diet records) and zinc status at 12 months (plasma zinc concentration). Statistical analyses performedRegression analyses were used to investigate differences in dietary intakes and zinc status by group, adjusted for maternal education and parity and infant age and sex. ResultsThere were no significant differences in zinc intakes between BLISS and Control infants at 7 (median: 3.5 vs 3.5 mg/day; P=0.42) or 12 (4.4 vs 4.4 mg/day; P=0.86) months. Complementary food groups contributing the most zinc at 7 months were “vegetables” for Control infants, and “breads and cereals” for BLISS infants, then “dairy” for both groups at 12 months. There was no significant difference in mean±standard deviation plasma zinc concentration between the Control (62.8±9.8 μg/dL [9.6±1.5 μmol/L]) and BLISS (62.8±10.5 μg/dL [9.6±1.6 μmol/L]) groups (P=0.75). ConclusionsBLISS infants achieved similar zinc intake and status to Control infants. However, the BLISS intervention was modified to increase iron intake, which may have improved zinc intake, so these results should not be generalized to infants following unmodified BLW.
